Therefore, a master class on upgrading an old chest of drawers will come in handy for those who want to save money, as well as for people with an artistic mindset who gravitate towards everything original. So how to decorate a dresser with your own hands?

Whether it is the restoration of the chest of drawers or the decor of the bedside table with your own hands - everything is done in stages. The first thing you need before starting work is the tools. Here is a list of what you need:
- small sander;
- sandpaper or sanding sponge;
- stencils;
- putty knife;
- unnecessary toothbrush;
- screwdriver;
- a knife for wood;
- several brushes, different in width and composition of the pile (hard and soft), sponges;
- masking tape;
- acetone;
- industrial film;
- toothpicks.
Materials needed:
- voluminous paste or acrylic-based putty;
- glue for wooden surfaces;
- wood varnish, stain or primer with paint of a certain color (for decoupage - three-layer napkins).
You will also need gloves and a respirator.
If it's an artistic idea, acrylic paint in the right color will do. For those wishing to modernize the old chest of drawers, replacing furniture fittings would be a good option: you can add new handles or mirror panels.

The decoration will be done using acrylic paint, red and blue pigments, with which we achieve the desired color when mixing these components. In addition, we need a putty in order to make the surface textured. Then you will need oil paint and top-glaze. Toplazure is a decorative coating with natural wax that will preserve the unique color of the wood.
For work you will need:
- White acrylic water-based paint.
- Finished finishing putty.
- Red and blue pigments.
- Walnut colored top-glaze.
- Brown oil paint.

Getting Started
Before decorating, it is necessary to remove all handles from the chest of drawers and wipe it from dust with a damp cloth.
Next, we take a spatula and spread a thin layer of white putty on the facades of all our drawers, that is, on the visible part of the chest of drawers. When staining, we see some spotting - it should be so. We need an unevenly colored surface.
We paint again, otherwise the color will be too pale. This is how it should turn out.
Then we take sandpaper, sand the top of the chest of drawers, side edges, and corners.
Then we take a sponge, and begin to rub on the entire surface of the chest of drawers, with the exception of the drawers, walnut-colored toplazer. Especially intensively we process the side parts, the corners of the facade, and the top of the chest of drawers. Next, we begin to stuff furniture nails along the facade of our chest of drawers. We make sure that the distance between the nails is the same.
Then we fasten the handles that we removed at the beginning of work, or others that match the style. We paint with a brush and oil paint around the nails and pens - we make a dark shade. We are finishing the work.

- 250 grams of water-based latex or acrylic paint.
- 2 tablespoons of ordinary plaster (can be taken from the children's kit). Plaster can be replaced with chalk.
- 1 tbsp. a spoonful of hot water.
Preparation:
- We take a glass jar, pour 1 spoonful of hot water into it, then pour gypsum there, and mix well.
- Immediately pour paint into this mass (do not wait for the gypsum to harden).

- self-tapping screws;
- polyurethane foam decorative moldings;

Preparation
Unscrew the handles from the dresser. Examine it carefully from all sides. Pay particular attention to the lid and legs: these are the places where the wood is usually the most damaged. If the deficiencies are minor, it is not necessary to eliminate them. But if more serious damage is found, sometimes it is necessary to replace some parts completely.
Free the chest of drawers from old varnish or paint. The upper layers can be removed with a chisel; they usually come off easily. Thoroughly rub the remains with emery so that clean wood is visible.

On places where noticeable irregularities and dents are found, apply mastic with a spatula and level the layer. After drying, sand these areas with fine-grained emery paper. Do this carefully, do not press too hard, otherwise you will damage the fresh layer of mastic. As a result, the surface should become perfectly flat.
New dresser handles you purchase may be smaller or larger than your old ones. In this case, you need to seal up the holes left over from the old handles that you removed with mastic and make new ones in the right places with a drill.
Note! There are handles that are attached to special screws. There is no need to drill holes for them. If you have the opportunity, purchase such accessories to make your job easier.
Dilute PVA glue with water. Use a brush to brush over the entire surface of the dresser. You can replace the glue with any primer. When the surface is completely dry, you can start decorating.
Decorative elements
First of all, prepare the main decorative elements - frames for the sidewalls and drawers. They can be made from conventional polyurethane moldings. In this work, the main thing is correct measurements. The frame for the drawer must be positioned strictly along the edge. It is better to make a small indent on the sidewalls.

It is also very important to properly trim the corner pieces of the molding.
When you have prepared all the parts for the frames, start attaching them. For greater reliability, fasten the frames with screws, then seal the places where they enter the moldings with mastic so that the caps do not stand out.

Now paint the installed frames with acrylic paint. Choose whichever color you like or suits the interior of the room. For example, for a French-style chest of drawers, light coffee or beige is well suited. Apply the paint in several layers, each time until it dries completely.
Stick wallpaper inside the frames. It's good if they have a thick texture and a quirky pattern. The ornament should be darker than the general background. After you finish pasting the wallpaper, carefully screw the knobs into place.
For the originality of the decor, use wallpaper.
The final touch is the covering of the chest of drawers with transparent varnish. It should be applied in several layers.
