Probably, each of us collected something in childhood - coins, matchboxes, mugs, badges... There are many people who carried their hobby into adulthood, becoming philatelists, numismatists or even philocartists (postcard collectors). Alco-minimalists—collectors of miniature bottles of alcohol—occupy a worthy place among collectors. As usual, we will begin the story about this original hobby with history.
The roots of alcoholism
The appearance of the first minions - this is what miniature bottles of alcohol, the volume of which is 50 ml or less, are called - dates back to the 18th century. True, at that time they were ceramic containers, because glass was still an expensive and labor-intensive material.
Merchants poured their drinks from barrels into small containers for advertising purposes so that customers could taste and make their choice. Minions received further development in the 20th century, during Prohibition in the USA. The ban did not affect alcoholic beverages in such a volume, so all manufacturers in the world sent their products to the USA in miniature bottles, ostensibly for advertising purposes, but in reality, of course, for direct consumption.
Miniatures are widely used today in hotel minibars, on airplanes, and in other places where a large bottle of alcohol would not be justified. There are also drinks that are bottled exclusively in this volume and consumed entirely as a medicine - this applies to some herbal liqueurs from Germany, which are drunk as an aperitif. But for a certain category of people, minions have become collectibles, a passion and an outlet.
It must be said that this area of collecting is very young. The international club Midwest Miniature Bottle Collectors was founded by a group of Chicago enthusiasts in 1979, and today includes collectors from 15 countries. In the Soviet Union, the first glass mini-bottles appeared in the late 1950s. The Russian club of alcoholic minimalists was created in 2005, at the same time the name was chosen for this type of collecting - alcoholism. Moreover, I had to choose from such options as minibottlephilia, alcoholism and even buticulomicrophilia.
How to become an alcoholic
Almost no one becomes an alcoholic “by vocation,” on purpose. Most often, the first miniature bottle of alcohol appears by chance, usually as a gift, followed by another, and only then the idea comes - why not make them a collectible?
Then begins the ordinary life of a passionate collector: searching for rare items, communicating with fellow fans of his craft, exchanging and buying minions. Many of the collectors have their own websites with a photo gallery of specimens and a story about the collection.
You can be immersed in the life of a collector very closely - there are people who devote all their free time to cataloging, replenishing the collection, correspondence, participation in meetings and gatherings, including international ones. Finding like-minded people is not difficult: even on the RuNet there are several specialized sites and forums, not to mention the international spaces of the Internet.
Replenishing a collection today is no longer as difficult as in former times, but no less exciting. There are entire minion stores; you can also find interesting specimens in specialized alcohol boutiques. Relatives and friends, having learned about the unusual hobby, from all their trips bring not magnets, but minions. But still, truly valuable, rare bottles, as a rule, do not appear on the open market. They can only be acquired through communication with equally enthusiastic people.
What are the collections?
Every beginning collector has to decide what kind of items he will collect. In the case of alcominiatures, the first thing you need to determine is:
Volume of collected bottles- since there are no strict rules and criteria for this direction, some people collect all bottles with a volume of 100 ml and less. But still, the classic collections consist of 50 ml bottles; they are the ones that belong to alcoholic minimalism.
Type of drinks— you can concentrate only on cognacs, whiskey or liqueurs, or you can collect all types of drinks. It is clear that in the second case the collection grows much faster, and in the first it becomes more valuable. By the way, according to collectors, it is bottles of liqueurs that are most often found on sale. But beer in miniature is considered a very rare and valuable trophy. At the same time, non-alcoholic drinks (syrups, juices, etc.) are not allowed to be collected. That is, of course, no one forbids collecting them, but this no longer has anything to do with alcoholic minimalism.
Package can also serve as a sign for separating collections. The vast majority of alcoholic drinks are bottled in classic glass bottles. The color of the glass can be different - transparent, brown, as in the case of Jägermeister, blue (Bombay Sapphire gin), green, etc. Recently, plastic bottles have become widespread - a huge number of types of whiskey are bottled in such bottles (Ballantines, Black Velvet, Canadian Club, etc.).
It’s hard to call other containers simply bottles - at least the sublime “vessel” is suitable for them, because they can be made of rock crystal, porcelain, ceramics, and they can take on a variety of forms.
Of particular value to collectors are non-standard, shaped bottles made of ceramics (in the shape of jugs, barrels, etc.), crystal or handmade glass. Such souvenir products are often produced by small family enterprises, in limited quantities, each element of which is numbered. Precious miniatures
All reputable manufacturers pay attention to the production of souvenir minions - some of them can be used for tasting and advertising purposes, and some are produced specifically with an eye on collectors. Often the minion and the “big brother”, a bottle of regular size, come in pairs. And if a minion of Baileys, Johnnie Walker whiskey or Absolut vodka does not surprise anyone, then a real hunt is on for Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac in a bottle made of the most expensive French baccarat crystal.
And the cognac House of Camus released a limited edition of bottles of cognac in the form of a book, made of Limoges porcelain and decorated with gold. Each “book” is decorated with a reproduction of great artists - Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet, etc. Inside the ceramic flask book contains the luxurious Camus Special Reserve, a blend of hundreds of aged cognac spirits.
There is also a miniature version of the rare Chabass Bowen cognac, the bottle of which is shaped like a woman’s dress from the 19th century. The head of the House of Chabass named this cognac in honor of his wife, Elizabeth Bowen.
Every collector would like to own Grant's whiskey in a tiny 5 ml bottle, exactly the same shape as a large bottle, with a similar label, but only a few hundred of these examples were produced. It is for the sake of such unique objects that the entire collection is created, because the highlight of collecting is the joy of owning something rare.
Secrets of mastery
If you think that collecting a collection of mini-bottles is as easy as shelling pears – what’s so complicated about it, just buy it and put it on the shelf – then you are very mistaken. We will not touch upon the topic of searching for copies; it is truly immense. But even after receiving the coveted bottle, the alcoholic minimalist has to work a lot so that it can settle in the collection for a long time.
First of all, the new purchase must be cleared of excise stamps, price tags and other paper debris, but so that the label is not damaged. Among alco-minimalists, there are entire instructions on steaming, scrubbing, and removing labels and traces of glue.
Based on the fact that the collection can only contain full and not empty bottles, collectors have to work to ensure that the drink does not evaporate over time through the cork. To do this, bottles are dipped into melted colorless wax, and recently special wax tapes or even ordinary silicone sealant are more often used. The purpose of these manipulations is to make the container airtight so as not to lose the precious contents over the years.
And finally, after a worthy place in the house has been found for the collection, you need to constantly take care of the lighting conditions - open sunlight can ruin some drinks by changing their color.

- The main forum of Russian mini-bottlers today has 1,160 users.
- The Guinness Book of Records holds the largest collection of miniatures, numbering 33,000 bottles.
