The question of how to make an original ottoman with your own hands is of interest not only to experienced needlewomen, but also to novice craftsmen. And for good reason, because this is an affordable way to update the furniture in the living room or hallway, while spending mere pennies. The task is greatly simplified by the fact that on the Internet you can find a lot of step-by-step instructions on how to sew a soft pouffe with your own hands from unnecessary things and improvised materials. Such home workshops are especially relevant for students and young families whose budget does not allow them to get hold of brand new furniture.

How to make an ottoman at home?

In fact, making an original pouffe yourself is not so difficult - a little effort, a bunch of unnecessary old things and a bit of inspiration will be enough. Making a drawing of a future creation yourself is quite problematic - it requires basic drawing skills and knowledge of the basics of geometry. Of course, we all once learned this at school, but we have already forgotten a little. In this case, drawings, assembly diagrams and calculations for materials will serve as a lifesaver.

Based on them, we make templates on paper, which are necessary for subsequent work on the pouffe. But since we are working on the manufacture of designer furniture, you can easily adjust the dimensions for yourself.

The next step will be the preparation of patterns. When transferring each detail to the fabric, do not forget to make allowances for the seams, otherwise the product will turn out to be much smaller than desired.

By the way, it is not at all necessary to cut out each part of the future product from the fabric - you can crochet it. There are also ways to make a homemade pouffe without a preliminary drawing and paper templates.

How to choose a ottoman model?

There are many different techniques, thanks to which you can make a beautiful and functional pouffe with your own hands. It is not surprising that it will be quite difficult for an inexperienced needlewoman to decide on the model of such a product and the method of its manufacture.

First you need to decide where you plan to place your future masterpiece. If in the hallway, then you should take a closer look at the frame models with legs in a classic style - they will not only decorate the interior, but also cope with the "direct" duties assigned to them.

Pouffes with a rigid frame will also be appropriate in the corridor, but soft models are quite suitable for the bedroom.

An ideal option for a children's room is a voluminous bag with which it will be quite convenient for children to mess around.

As for the technique of execution, then focus on your strengths. If you are good with a sewing machine, then pay attention to round soft models.

Are you good at knitting? Look for crochet patterns for poufs.

Well, if you are a fairly experienced needlewoman, then you can also aim at a model with a carriage tie and a drawer that will perfectly fit into your interior.

If you wish, you can also make a miniature copy of the chair by making a classic square ottoman with a back and removable cushions.

With all the variety of models and shapes, this piece of furniture will not be difficult to make even for those people who do not have experience in furniture design. Of course, a pear-shaped bag is much easier to make than a leather bedside pouffe with a storage box for small items, however, both options can be made by a novice master.

First, try to make a simple frameless ottoman for a sofa, which requires a minimum of details, knowledge and experience, and only then proceed to more complex models.

DIY wooden ottomans

Unlike simple frameless forms, you will have to get confused with a wooden product, both with the selection of materials and with the choice of model. Frame products have two main shapes - angular and rectangular. The first will be preferable for small spaces, as it will help to use the corner and make your interior more functional. This is especially true in a small hallway or a narrow corridor - here large shapes such as a ball will simply take all the free space.

In the living room, wooden models stylized as chests or animals look very organic (a white leather hippopotamus will become a real decoration of your home).

When choosing a model, make sure that it fully matches the original style of the room. This means that in a loft interior, an exquisite ottoman with a capitonné carriage screed will look a little ridiculous. The same can be said if an ultra-modern 5 in 1 transformer on wheels is placed in a classic living room. The color scheme should also be compatible - in the “sky” interior (in blue and blue tones), light green furniture “cuts” the eye a little.

The wooden frame for the ottoman has another advantage - spaciousness. If you have a small hallway, then you can make a folding pouf-bench, which in combination will serve as a large and roomy shoe rack.

Do-it-yourself bottle ottoman

The product from plastic bottles has several advantages at once:

  • light weight - the average weight of one piece of furniture does not exceed 2 kg;
  • profitability - the main part of such furniture is household waste and unnecessary old things that cost practically nothing, so you only have to pay extra for upholstery fabric;
  • environmental friendliness - such needlework is considered waste disposal and contributes to the conservation of nature.

You can make ottomans both from ordinary bottles and from plastic eggplants, the main thing in such work is to fix the plastic filler well with tape, otherwise the product will be loose. For the stability of your pouf, it is also worth cutting out the bottom and lid from thick cardboard and also fixing them with adhesive tape. Next, it is worth making a fabric cover and the new furniture is ready.

Do-it-yourself chipboard ottoman

As mentioned earlier, wooden models are quite practical and durable. If you do not have natural wood on hand, then you can use wood chip boards. This material is perfect for making furniture. It makes roomy pouffes with a lid and soft upholstery. However, when choosing such a material, one should not forget about safety - use only ecological chipboard for furniture, which does not contain formaldehydes hazardous to health.

Do-it-yourself ottoman from improvised materials

Experienced needlewomen know that you can make exquisite creations from any unnecessary material. If you are an avid motorist, then you probably have a whole collection of unnecessary tires in your garage. From tires and tubes that you absolutely do not need, you can make several ottomans and a coffee table. To create such an ensemble, you will also need two round pieces of wood and a cover made of foam rubber and fabric. You can notice wooden details with plywood elements.

Are you a fan or admirer of classic furniture? A beautiful ottoman in this style can be made from an old stool, foam rubber and leather upholstery. From these simple components, an interesting classic model with short legs and a soft seat is obtained.

If you want a beautiful round ottoman, then it can be made not only from a wheel, but also from an ordinary plastic bucket. For it, you will also need foam rubber, any upholstery fabric (you can use old jeans), a cardboard or rattan cover.

Interesting interior items are also obtained from pompoms. They can either be soft or have a rigid frame made of slats. Such furniture is covered with a dense fabric, and on top it is sheathed with pre-prepared pompoms and thick threads for knitting.

You can make furniture for the country from pallets. To do this, you must fasten several wooden pallets with self-tapping screws and cover them with a soft seat made of fabric and several layers of foam rubber.

Country furniture is generally quite unpretentious in execution, so it can be made from plastic pipes, from an old suitcase, from a rope, and even from a wooden coil that remained after laying the cable.

Do-it-yourself children's ottoman

Making furniture for a child is a real pleasure, because there are practically no restrictions on shape, style or color. Pear, apple, ball - you can use these shapes when sewing children's puff bags.

Don't forget about your pets too - they will also appreciate hand-made upholstered furniture. You can make an ottoman for a cat with your own hands quite quickly from fabric shreds and filler. However, the step-by-step instructions for making such a product for a cat are slightly different from the usual version. Cats are very fond of hiding, so make sure that the pouffe resembles a cozy mini-house. To do this, simply make a horizontal hole in the base. But the furniture for the dog does not need to be adapted - the "human" version will also suit it.

Have you ever wondered how to make an ottoman with your own hands? Actually, it's easy. The main thing is to select the necessary materials and tools, and then proceed according to the instructions. The ottoman is a very comfortable thing in the interior. It doesn't take up much space. You can choose from many design options depending on the style of the room. In addition, making it yourself is a pleasant thing that allows you to embody the most interesting ideas.

How to make a frame puff

The frame pouffe is very easy to make yourself. Such a piece of furniture will decorate the room and will serve as a chair (and very comfortable and soft). In addition, you can also store any small items in it.

It is necessary to prepare in advance a ruler, glue (carpentry type), a pencil, a stapler (construction), a hacksaw, wood screws, a screwdriver and a hammer. Of the materials you will need a special fabric with which we sheathe the frame. It is necessary to choose exactly the one that is intended just for decorative upholstery of upholstered furniture. In addition, we need 1 more timber with dimensions of 15 * 4 * 4 cm, a pair of piano hinges, 4 rollers for furniture, chipboard with dimensions of 175 * 240 * 0.16 cm. All this is taken based on a standard ottoman with dimensions of approximately 40 *40*50 cm.

Before starting work, it is necessary to study the step-by-step instructions. It is as follows:

  1. First you need to make markings on the material, and then the blanks. To make the walls of the structure, you will need 2 cuts with dimensions of 37 * 40 cm. To arrange the side parts, you need 2 blanks that have dimensions of 37 * 37 cm. In addition, you need to cut 1 more square with a length and width of 40 cm.
  2. Now you can start cutting out these parts. To do this, you can use a hacksaw.
  3. The beam is supposed to be divided into 4 parts so that each is 37 cm long.
  4. Now it is necessary to assemble a box from the cut out parts. The height should be 37 cm.
  5. The finished structure is fixed with carpentry glue. It is supposed to be applied from the inside of the product. Due to this, the part will be more rigid.
  6. Now it is additionally required to fix the corners with self-tapping screws - this must be done from the outside of the corners. If there is a desire, then the structure can also be strengthened with metal corners, which should be purchased before that at any hardware store.
  7. Now it is supposed to apply an adhesive substance to the underside of the box. The same applies to the end side of the bars.
  8. Glue the bottom and wait until the assembled frame dries.
  9. Additionally, insert self-tapping screws into the ends to strengthen the product.
  10. Now you can start making the cover. It is necessary to fix 4 stop bars in the inner surface of the perimeter of the box.
  11. It is necessary to check that the stiffeners are correctly fixed. They should not interfere with the lifting of the pouffe lid.
  12. Now it remains to do the upholstery. How to sheathe an ottoman - everyone chooses independently, depending on their own preferences and the interior of the room. It is recommended to use batting, synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, holofiber. Top can be covered with additional upholstery.

Now the ottoman is completely ready. And this is not just a beautiful item - it can replace a chair and a small bedside table for small things.

Poufs from bottles and reels

At home, you can make an ottoman from the most unusual items. For example, you can use plastic bottles. There are already many crafts from this available material. A pouffe made of it will not only be distinguished by its decorative properties, but will also become very practical.

It is necessary to prepare 40 plastic bottles in advance. And don't throw away the lids. In addition, you also need adhesive tape - choose only a wide tape. For filling, a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber is needed - the material will be used for lining. Additionally, you need scissors, knitting threads, a stapler, a hook or knitting needles that are used for knitting. And of course, you need to choose a decorative fabric for upholstery.

Do-it-yourself ottoman step by step looks like this:

  1. First, make a design out of bottles. All containers must be tightly closed with lids. Use adhesive tape to connect parts. It is necessary to make several layers of plastic bottles. You can fix all the bottles at once, but experts advise fixing them only a few at a time - this will increase the strength of the structure. When the sections are received, they are also supposed to be fixed to each other.
  2. Now it will be necessary to do a pattern of cardboard. To do this, you just need to attach the workpiece to a circle, the diameter of which is about 40 cm. Then draw lines with a pencil. Then cut out 2 circles. Both blanks must be attached on both sides of the impromptu pouffe and secured with adhesive tape.
  3. Next up is the lining. It is necessary to cut 2 circles of the same diameter as the previous blanks. In addition, you also need to cut out a rectangle, which is supposed to wrap the structure on the sides. Using a stapler, you should fix the foam rubber or other material that is used for linings on the structure. The linings will still need to be additionally sewn together along the connection lines.
  4. You need to make a cover. For this, any dense fabric is used. You can choose a special material that is used for upholstery of upholstered furniture, but if this is not possible, then any other will do - the main thing is that it is dense enough.
  5. At the end, it remains to sew the side and upper parts of the pouffe to the bottom.

Now the pouffe from ordinary plastic bottles is ready. By the way, it can be done with a back. In this case, it is still necessary to make a blank of such a shape that the pouffe should have. The back of the product must also be sheathed with foam rubber and decorative fabric.

Do-it-yourself round ottoman can be made from a coil. If the interior of the room is made in a rustic or classic style, then you can decorate it with a pouffe, which is made from a coil. The result is a durable and reliable product that can be decorated at will. The pouf will turn out original and interesting.

You need to find a wooden coil. It can be made not from wood, but from chipboard - this option is also suitable. Cardboard, upholstery, batting or foam rubber, polystyrene and adhesive mass are also needed. From the tools you need to prepare in advance a drill, a stapler and a sewing machine.

Instructions for creating a pouffe are as follows:

  1. From the foam, cut out the details with the planned shape. They should be the same size as the tops of the coil. Fix the parts with glue.
  2. Now you need to make a template to work with a soft layer and decorative fabric. To do this, it is supposed to cut a circle on paper or film with the same dimensions as the tops of the coil, but you still need to make a small allowance in order to stitch these parts.
  3. It is supposed to smear wooden circles with glue and fix circles that are cut out of foam rubber on them.
  4. It is necessary to wrap the entire structure with cardboard and fix it with glue and a stapler.
  5. After that, you need to wrap the pouffe in batting and also secure with a stapler. It is preliminarily supposed to measure everything, and then remove everything superfluous.
  6. It remains only to complete the upholstery. The material should be stretched, but not too tight.

At the end, it remains only to attach the legs to the structure.

How to make fabric puffs

From the fabric you can make a multi-colored pouffe. The original product comes out. For it, you will need various pieces of fabric, but they must all be combined with each other in shades. In addition, fillers and lining material are needed. Still need big buttons.

The algorithm of actions is quite simple:

  1. Think about the pattern first. It is necessary to draw a circle whose diameter will be the same as that of the planned product. Then divide the circle into 4 parts, and then each part obtained into another 3. Now it is supposed to cut pieces in the form of petals from the fabric. Be sure to leave a couple more centimeters to connect the joints. The same is supposed to be done with the lining material.
  2. Connect all the details.
  3. Now make the bottom part of the product. It is best to use a thick fabric. From the inside, the top and bottom of the pouffe must be sewn. At the same time, do not sew at the end of 1 piece in the shape of a petal.
  4. Now you need to turn out the material and use the filler.
  5. At the end, it remains only to sew the remaining places and mask the seams with large buttons, attaching them on top and bottom of the structure.

You can also make an interesting and simple pouffe from an ordinary sweater. Such an item will fit into any interior, and everyone will cope with its creation. You need to find a suitable sweater - you can even take a worn one, but it is recommended to choose a product made of wool.

Another interesting option is a pouffe that looks like a ball. To create it, only polyethylene, fillers, graph paper (to make a pattern) and various fabrics in two shades are needed. This ottoman is very simple, but at the same time comfortable and will definitely fit into any room.

Conclusion

Among all the options listed, everyone will be able to find the one that is most suitable for him. All the instructions described are very simple, so that even a beginner can cope with such a task and make a pouffe with his own hands. This piece of furniture is very convenient and practical. In addition, it will also decorate the room.

An ottoman on wheels is a pretty handy thing, especially if it has a lid, under which something else can be put away. After going shopping and even studying Avito, I realized that there was no suitable pouf anywhere. In stores, either there are no wheels, or the colors are not the same, but on Avito the price tags are almost higher than the store ones, and there are a lot of second-hand frank ones. Therefore, it naturally emerged that you need to do the pouf yourself. A rather easy and quick creation process loomed in my head, but in reality it turned out not quite so, mainly due to inexperience. The creation process is described below.

First you need to decide on the size. In terms of height, taking into account the volumetric cover and wheels, the ottoman should not be higher than a standard chair, or it may be lower (depending on what purpose). To understand what sizes are needed, the easiest way is to take a regular chair on which you are comfortable and measure it. Our pouffe turned out to be 42x42 cm and 55 cm in height. Such a height is inconvenient and should be 45-50 cm, but it just so happened, because I invented the production technology right during the process of creating the pouffe. To make your pouf lower, then parts 2 and 3 (see drawing) will not be 380, but 330 mm high.

We will make a pouffe from chipboard and upholster it with dermantine with foam rubber filler. Below is a drawing. On it, the numbers 6 and 7 indicate the holes for confirmation 7x50 at the end of the part and on the plane, respectively. Such designations are accepted in the chipboard sawing office in order to indicate them schematically on the drawings. True, they require a distance of a multiple of 32 mm between the holes, but you can put up with this. How to make holes yourself.

Blueprints

Assembly

Finally, the parts are made, we begin the assembly. Do not forget to set the correct moment on the screwdriver, otherwise it will drive the confirmation too deep (

Stuffing

We agreed that the pouffe would be filled with foam rubber (polyurethane foam). To do this, we need a sheet of foam rubber (usually sheets are 2x1 meter) with a density of EL3040 and a thickness of 20 mm. The walls of the pouffe will be stuffed in one layer, and the lid will be voluminous and filled with three layers glued together. It is advisable, of course, to use a solid one with a thickness of 40-60 mm, but in order to save ...

You can mark the foam rubber or cut it directly on the workpiece, placing something under the foam rubber so as not to cut the floor.

Having cut out the foam rubber for two opposite walls (calculated size 38x39.6), we glue them to the box using PVA or glue for ceiling plinths. Here it is best to apply glue and then poke around with foam rubber on the chipboard so that the glue spreads over the surface as best as possible and does not freeze with sausages.

Having glued two sides, cut out the other two (estimated size 42x39.6), so that the foam rubber covers not only the box, but also the ends of the foam rubber on perpendicular walls. It will be clearer if you look at the photo.

Cut out the foam for the lid. Everything is simple here - cut out 3 pieces exactly 38x38 or use the blank as a template and glue them one on top of the other to the lid. Then you need to cut out the sidewalls, which, taking into account the thickness of the chipboard (16 mm) and three layers of foam rubber 20 mm each, will turn out to be 38x7.6 cm. The other two sidewalls will turn out to be 42x7.6 cm.

cover upholstery

The upholstery will consist of three pieces: 1 for the cover 67x67 cm, and two 86x52 cm for the base.

Let's start with the lid. It is the opening of the lid that is shown on the left. I'll try to explain:
42 is the width of the pouffe, taking into account 2 cm of foam rubber on both sides;
7.5 cm are small flaps 1 cm wide for stitching and forming the volume of the lid

To simplify the bending of the corners, we cut off one of the sides at an angle and bend the second obliquely.

In general, for this case, I specifically bought a stapler I had long wanted and cheap staples for it No. 53 12 mm high. Either because of the cheapness (it seems 20-30 rubles), or because of the excessive height, but they had to be beaten with a hammer. They did not want to fit in completely, like those that were included in the kit by 8 mm. It was possible to pull it correctly with carnations, but it’s still more convenient with a stapler, even taking into account finishing with a hammer))

Well, the lid is ready. You should probably pull as hard as you can. In my case, after sitting, creases remain on this cover. But it is quite difficult to calculate the tension, it seems that you are pulling too hard all the time. This seems to come with experience.

base upholstery

Let's take care of the upholstery of the base. Dimensions 86x52 consist of: 86 \u003d 2 sides of 42 cm each, plus 1 centimeter for two seams and 52 \u003d 39.5 (box height, taking into account the bottom thickness) + 2 (foam rubber on top) + 1.5 (chipboard thickness) + 3.5 (for hem) + 2 (foam rubber thickness from below) + 3.5 (for hem). Probably, I didn’t explain it clearly, but that’s how these dimensions were set))

We sew two pieces along the short side on both sides and put the resulting cylinder through the top onto the base, bending it inward from above and below. Please note that on top the upholstery is bent directly onto the ends of the chipboard on three sides, except for one, where the hinges are attached. That's exactly (like where the loops are) I wanted to do initially, but then I decided to simplify the process, because. staples enter the end of the chipboard much easier. Thus, the hem turned out to be quite large that it had to be bent inward. I advise you to calculate in advance how you will do this so that you do not waste extra material.

loops

I took the usual loops, although you can use special lifts. It is easier to fasten first to the lid, then to the base, but it is more difficult to attach them in the right place on the lid, so that later the holes on the hinges fall into the plane of the base. I first fixed it on the base, but I had to suffer so that after attaching the hinges to the lid, it would stand evenly in the closed position.

wheels

I bought the simplest wheels for 13 rubles with a mounting platform. I attached the first wheel by placing the platform parallel to the sides of the pouffe, but I decided to place the rest at 45 degrees. I found it more reliable

Well, this is how he turned out. It was also possible to make a limiter for opening and a handle from a piece of upholstery, but this threatened with additional tangible costs for a seamstress and I decided that we would do it ourselves over time))

Price

One of the reasons for the appearance of a do-it-yourself pouffe was the price. I must say that the savings turned out to be scanty. But I just like doing things myself, it's my hobby, if you like. So:
820 - chipboard with an additive;
315 - foam rubber 2x1;
660 - leatherette 138x120 cm;
300 - seamstress services;
45 - loops;
52 - wheels;
38 - euro screws;
2230 - Total.
However, here it was possible to save money firstly on chipboard, because. I used laminated, but it was possible to cut out from any. Secondly, if you have a typewriter, then another 300 rubles of savings. I also took good quality dermantin at 550 per line, there was an option to take 450 and even 350

P.S. I got a lot of useful information from
