Nevertheless, since this topic almost never loses its relevance, today I want to continue it by describing the manufacture of a very simple opener for screw caps.

This idea came to me almost by accident, when I came across such a long M12 bolt with a nut and wide washers.

From it, I decided to make a simple opener, and it took just a couple of minutes.

Materials and tools

So, to make this opener, I needed:

Materials and fasteners

• Bolt M12 160 mm long, with nut and two wide washers.
• A small piece of thick, thick rubber.
• Electrical tape or suitable heat shrink tubing.

Tools:

• Powerful scissors (metal scissors can be used).
• A utility knife or scissors (optional).

In fact, we already have almost everything we need to make a bottle opener. The only thing we are missing is two rubber washers so as not to damage the lid when opening, and also so that the grip of the lid with the opener is better and more reliable.

Therefore, we will make two rubber washers.
To begin with, I cut two squares out of the rubber that fit the size of the washers.

Then, in the center of each square, cut out the bolt holes with scissors.

Moreover, these holes do not have to be made even. The main thing is that the bolt passes freely into the holes of the rubber washers, and the holes themselves can be uneven and crooked.

Now it only remains to cut the rubber washers to the diameter of the steel washers, making them more or less round.

Well, now, you can finally assemble our opener by placing the washers on the bolt and then screwing the nut onto it.

In order that when opening the covers, the tip of the bolt, which will serve as a handle for us, does not cut our hands, you can wrap it with electrical tape.

And now our opener is ready!

Now let's check our opener in action.

First, open a can with a small diameter screw cap. To do this, put our opener on top of the lid and squeeze it with washers, tightening the nut tightly.

After that, applying some effort to the handle of our opener, we turn the lid and remove it.

In this case, the cover is easily removed and remains sandwiched between the washers of the opener.

By the way, it should be noted here that when the lid is clamped before opening it, the washers on the bolt are slightly skewed, but this does not affect the result at all.

Similarly, I opened the larger diameter caps on the other two cans. The lids also opened without too many problems.

Disadvantages of bottle openers and how to fix them

In general, this opener turned out to be quite efficient, but during the tests, two small flaws were revealed, which, however, can be easily fixed.

Firstly, the handle of this opener turned out to be too short, which is especially true when opening large diameter covers.

But this flaw can be easily correctedb, if you take a longer bolt or even use a piece of threaded rod, about 200 mm long.

Using the correct nut

Secondly, when clamping the cover before opening it, it is rather inconvenient to use a hex nut, since the clamping force created by fingers is clearly insufficient.

This disadvantage is also very easy to correct if a wing nut is used instead of the hex nut. I simply did not have one at hand, although you can easily buy it at a hardware store (or you can try to make a homemade one).

Well, in general, such an opener is quite possible to use. Its great advantage lies in the fact that it can be done very easily and quickly. In addition, if this opener becomes unnecessary, it can be quickly disassembled, and the bolt with nut and washers can be used for another purpose (in other homemade products or in construction work in an apartment or in the country).
