Repaint the MDF door. What paint to paint mdf doors

Repairs in your house or apartment are quite commonplace, although many are afraid of it, but they still agree to do it, however, a reasonable question may arise - how to paint a door from MDF? At first glance, it would seem that there is nothing difficult in this - take a brush and paint, but not everything is so simple - the result may be different.

Below we will talk about the most practical and effective methods, and in addition, you can watch the thematic video in this article as additional material.

What do we need

Explanation. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard, MDF) is a medium density fiberboard.
This material is made by dry pressing of finely dispersed wood chips.
The melamine-modified urea resins serve as a binder there.

Tools and materials

Note. Manufacturing plants produce their products already primed, that is, ready to use, so it should not be primed.

  • First of all, you should figure out how to paint MDF doors, that is, we mean paints and varnishes. The best, one might even say, the only option for such work is water-based acrylic paints for wood products. Despite such a seemingly “flimsy” base like water, they have an excellent saturated color, do not fade, they can be washed without problems with a wet cloth (sponge) and, moreover, they are practically odorless.
  • Some people try to use a substance like Zinga conductive paint for this, but this is more like a cold galvanizing method and is more suitable for metal products than for lumber. But fire-retardant paints for metal Polistil, although it can be used for wood, they are afraid of active exposure to moisture and are additionally covered with enamels. (See also the article.)

  • To apply paint to the door surface, it is most convenient and qualitatively more efficient to use flat, narrow and wide paint brushes. Panels, of course, are more convenient to paint with wide brushes, but if there is glass in the door, then, of course, a narrow brush will be much better. When buying them, you should pay attention to the working part and check if the bristles are sticking, otherwise you will have to constantly remove the hairs from the surface or you may not even notice it, and after drying it (the hair) will leave a mark. (See also the article.)

  • If you have a regular door with two panels, then for the speed of painting and to save paint, you can use a terry or woolen roller, and paint the grooves with a brush. Just do not use a foam roller, as it slips and the coating is obtained with bald patches.

Let's get down to the paint brushes

So, apply the first layer of paint with your own hands with a brush or paint roller, or using both tools and at the same time do not be afraid to paint the ends. The fact is that poorly painted door ends are quite common, because if there is an extra thin layer there, problems begin to arise after a while - the door stops closing normally - it rubs against the box.

After that, it is often necessary to sink the awnings or break the box with spacers.

When using a water-based acrylic coating, this does not happen, since the liquid is absorbed into the wood and the film is absolutely insignificant. After you have applied the first layer, you can rest for 15 or 20 minutes - during this time the door will be dry, but what you see may upset you - the surface will change little (especially for light colors) and, moreover, there will be stains and streaks!

But do not be confused by this - after all, you have to apply the next layer - and you will do it, and in addition, such actions are provided for by the instructions printed on the packaging (can, canister).

After the second layer has dried, carefully inspect the surface so that there are no imperfections in the form of spots or uneven tone on it. If you do not notice anything like this, and everything suits you, then you can use it, but if necessary, it is better to apply a third layer, which will certainly be the last.

But even now, the canvas is subject to inspection after drying, because you could simply have missed any of the sections, and this is no wonder, because at this stage the shades will merge strongly and it will be possible to distinguish fresh from old only by shine.

When everything is ready and the door is completely dry, you can start the operation process and forget about the roller and brushes for several years, and this is quite normal, but there are people who have a creative gyrus hidden somewhere deep in their brain, which always haunts. even when everything is good.

Well, then you can add a little variety that won't be overpowering, as this is pure classic - look at the photo above - it uses regular bronze and a fine brush.

Conclusion

Now you know how to paint an MDF door and understand that it is quite simple and, one might say, even pleasant, since during the work you will not even feel the smell. Just do not neglect the indication and do not use other paints, then your door will turn out beautiful and will serve you for a long time!

Moreover, the possibilities of the construction market allow this. To do this, you need to buy a primed (that is, ready for painting). Such a door is well painted with acrylic paint (which means, water-based - almost odorless). Acrylic paint is well applied to a primed MDF door even with a brush and does not leave streaks on the surface, which is very important for the aesthetic appearance of the door.

How to paint mdf doors? How to paint the door?

It is good to apply paint (this is faster, and in addition, paint is saved) and with a brush (a brush is good for convex areas of the door panel).

Brush the first coat onto the door surface. should dry in 15-20 minutes. In this case, a pleasant surprise will be found - the paint is almost odorless. This is because the paint is based on water. At the same time, the quality of painting does not deteriorate in any way. Over time, the coating does not fade or fade. Doors can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

After first applying a coat of paint to the door surface, it will be found that the paint has absorbed into the surface and the door looks unevenly painted. A second coat of paint is required. Perhaps, after the second time, paint application will be required for the third, final, time. And now - that's it, the door is ready.

How much acrylic paint is required for one set of doors
(a set is: a door leaf, a box of 5 running meters, a casing of 10 running meters). Based on personal experience: one set of doors requires one kilogram of acrylic paint.

Where to buy acrylic paint

Acrylic paint is sold wherever residential paint is sold.

Attention: for painting primed MDF doors, the following paint is required - WATER-BASED ACRYLIC PAINT FOR WOOD PRODUCTS (WINDOWS, DOORS).

Acrylic paint, intended, for example, for walls, will in no case be suitable for MDF doors.

Oil paint is also not suitable, since it is poorly applied to the door. Leaves an unusual shine and oil paint marks on the door.

Painting technology of MDF and wood

Preparation for painting MDF and wood

The technology of painting MDF doors and furniture (facades) involves preparation, painting and intermediate operations at a temperature of 18-28 ° C, a relative humidity of 50-80% and a moisture content of wood 8-14%. The surfaces to be painted, the paints and varnishes used and the painting equipment should have the same temperature.

Primer, paint and varnish for MDF and wood are supplied ready for painting and do not require preliminary preparation. If the tinting of paints and varnishes (paintwork materials) is carried out independently, you should be guided by the general recommendations for tinting paint.

Before painting MDF and wood, the primer, paint and varnish must be filtered through a 50-100 micron filter. The filtering process is mandatory for the finishing material, especially for glossy finishes. If the filtered paints and varnishes have been stored for more than two weeks, the paintwork should be re-filtered before painting.

Wood priming, intermediate sanding
When painting porous woods, a wood and MDF primer should be used before applying the topcoat. Recommended parameters of primer spraying: working pressure 2-4 atm., Nozzle size 1.6-2.4 mm, wet layer thickness 80-120 µm. Drying of the primer can be carried out in the range from 16 to 60 ° C, while the drying time until ready for sanding is from 6 hours to 30 minutes. When varnishing doors, the first coat of wood varnish can act as a primer.

When working out the technology of painting wood and MDF, the optimal test for readiness for sanding is whether the sanding paper is clogged or not. The primer for wood and MDF is designed for both manual and machine sanding, and is ideal for infrared drying. When grinding, do not allow grinding to the base; if such areas occur, the product should be primed again.

Painting of interior doors

Painting with finishing paintwork is carried out by air spraying: working pressure 2.5-4 atm., Nozzle size 1.6-2.4 mm. MDF paint and varnish are ideal for HVLP (spray gun) painting. On request, acrylic paint and wood varnish are available in roller application, in combination with infrared drying.

Painting (painting) of MDF and wood is carried out in one layer, the recommended thickness of the wet layer is 120-150 microns. For more convenient painting, the door leaf is located at an angle of 15-20 °, painting in a vertical position also does not cause any particular difficulties.

Drying painted wood and MDF

Drying of wood and MDF painted with acrylic paint, for maximum productivity and stability of production, is carried out at a temperature of 35 to 60 ° C with a relative humidity of 50-80%, the drying time is from 1.5 to 2 hours. It is preferable to use a convective drying method. It is recommended to carry out the control of the relative humidity in the dryer, the drying time of water-based paints and varnishes is very dependent on this parameter.

It should be noted that familiarization with the technology of painting interior doors with industrial paints and varnishes for MDF and wood is not recommended for drying at room temperature. Seeming ease of use requires professional skills and experience in painting.

Warehousing and transportation

Before storage, the painted sheets of interior doors must be laid with soft paper or packed in individual cardboard packaging to avoid friction on the painted surface. It is not recommended to expose painted products to long-term exposure to water and negative temperatures for the first seven days. Warehousing and storage: 5-25 ° C at 50-80% relative humidity. Transportation of doors at temperatures down to -25 ° C is allowed.

Carrying out repairs on your own, and not having enough construction experience, you have to deal with many tasks that you need to solve yourself and make the right decision.

When the question arose about the choice of interior doors, the renovation was already coming to an end, and as sometimes happens, the money allocated for this event was slowly coming to an end. In order to save money, I decided to buy and. The doors are not bad, the only color did not suit, it is white hospital color,

We make ourselves out of a cheap door, beautiful and expensive.

but at the price very much, even satisfied. The question was how to paint the door in order to preserve the structure and give the door a normal look. Friends advised Polish Lakobeyts,
We make ourselves out of a cheap door, beautiful and expensive.

Lakobeyts has a liquid consistency, due to which the varnish penetrates deeply into the pores of the wood, filling them and forming a thin, uniform, water-repellent layer of the varnish coating. It is also very convenient that the varnish and tone are mixed in one, thanks to this you do not need to first tint and then open with varnish, saving time and effort.

The varnish application technology is very simple. The varnish is applied with a brush, roller or spray.

The best results are achieved when the varnish is applied with a brush for several reasons. Doors have a certain panel pattern, and in these places, applying varnish with a spray gun or roller, it is very difficult to achieve a uniform coating. This can only be done by a highly qualified specialist. It is very easy to work with a brush even without certain skills. Before using Lakobeyts, stir well, this will ensure an even tone. You need to use a special brush (for varnish). In such a brush, the pile holds very well and does not fall out.

It is necessary to apply varnish along the grain of the tree, or structure, in a thin uniform layer. When going through the drawing of the panel, you need to be especially careful, smudges may form in these places, which must be removed immediately with a brush.

What is the best way to lay the doors before installation, or after? I patched the first door before installation. Putting the door on a horizontal surface, being afraid of smudges. I will say that the process is very inconvenient. You need to open one side, wait a day, turn over and open the other side, and then repeat the process again, because the door must be covered with two layers of varnish.

I decided to open all other doors with varnish, when the doors were already installed in the openings with embedded locks and mounted cashing, the process exceeded all expectations in speed.

We make ourselves out of a cheap door, beautiful and expensive.

Doors prepared in this way can be installed in all rooms. Two layers of varnish provide doors with protection against high humidity and frequent temperature changes. The coating is very durable and practical.

Thanks to Lakobeyts, the doors have acquired a beautiful and very durable, nutty tone. Practically indistinguishable from natural wood.

How to paint a white wood door? The loss of an old wooden door of its original appearance is not a reason to part with it.

It can not only be restored without resorting to significant costs, but also to improve the appearance of the door by applying a pattern to its surface imitating a wood structure. But before painting the door with your own hands under a tree, you need to familiarize yourself with the nuances of doing the work that this article offers.

When painting interior doors in an apartment, the following are taken into account:

  • Specific wishes of household members.
  • Availability of materials.
  • The general style of the interior in the apartment.

Interior doors can be painted using several options:

  • In the same color as the floor.
  • To match the wall decoration.
  • For existing furniture:
  1. kitchen set made of MDF;
  2. wardrobe in the bedroom;
  3. wall or upholstered furniture in the living room.
  • Decorate semi-antique.
  • Use the contrast of individual details, which is especially important for the design of paneled models.
  • Apply a pattern to the painted surface.
  • Pay attention to the structure of the tree.

Wherein:

  • Bright and monochromatic options fit perfectly into the modern design, as in the photo.
  • By highlighting the wood structure or painting the door with an antique effect, you can decorate a classic interior or country style.

Tip: If you have doubts about doing complex work on your own, you should stop at the universal option - paint the door white, which fits perfectly into any room.

What paint to choose for the door

The type and color of paint is selected depending on the type of work being carried out.

It can be:

  • Highlighting the natural beauty of wood on the door leaf. In this case, you need to use:
  1. colorless varnishes;
  2. wood stain;
  3. oil impregnation;
  4. varnishes for toning.
  • Hiding the existing pattern by applying a new one that looks like wood fiber. To do this, select wood-like paints such as:
  1. Acrylic.
  2. Oil.
  3. Polyurethane.
  4. Perchlorovinyl.

Tip: When choosing paint for doors, preference should be given to water-based acrylics. They are great for brushing, they have the most suitable consistency for this.

When painting sauna doors or installed in damp rooms, it is better to purchase alkyd paints that perfectly repel moisture.

Affects the choice of paint and type of coating, for example:

  • Wooden (see Painting wooden doors: how and what to do) and laminated doors can be painted with any composition.
  • Do not use aggressive components for MDF and veneer surfaces.

Features of painting a wooden door

A wooden door is the easiest to paint.

For this:

  • The surface is pre-cleaned from a layer of old paint. This is done:
  1. grinder;
  2. sandpaper;
  3. construction hairdryer;
  4. with a spatula.
  • Coverage is selected. You can take paint or stain, which includes a special impregnation and varnish.

When painting a panel or paneled wooden door, work must be done in a horizontal plane.

Wherein:

  • Shield canvases are painted from top to bottom, and then from left to right in small squares.
  • On paneled canvases, painting begins with recesses, and then protruding parts are painted in the direction from the center to the edges.

Wooden doors are painted with a roller (see), and projections and small details are worked out with a brush.

When decorating a semi-antique surface, you need to prepare:

  • Two different paint colors.
  • Plain sandpaper.
  • Furniture wax.
  • Matching antique fittings.

How to paint a veneer door

Painting veneered MDF doors is a little more difficult than painting simple wooden doors.

However, this may be required if:

  • The specified service life of the coating has expired.
  • The need to repaint a new product.
  • The coating was damaged during the repair.
  • Not quite satisfied with the previous color of the coating.

For painting veneer doors, water-based compounds are used:

  • Polyurethane.
  • Glyphthalic.

Tip: When painting a veneer door, you cannot use nitro paint. Due to the presence of toxic components in it, the veneer becomes covered with matte spots that are difficult to hide even with a glossy varnish.

To preserve the veneer structure, it is better to use a tint varnish.

The instruction for painting an interior veneer door offers:

  • Remove the top coat of varnish. If necessary, the surface is corrected, with a floor compound directly on the previous coating.
  • All irregularities are removed with a special primer.
  • Apply a layer of paint evenly.
  • The veneer is varnished.

How to paint a laminate door

In order for the coating to hold for a long time, the surface must be properly prepared. You can paint a laminated door with any compound.

How to paint a laminated door:

  • The canvas is placed in a horizontal position.
  • The varnish layer is removed with a sander or fine-grit sandpaper. Most often, it is enough to remove only the top layer using wax, dirt-repellent impregnations.
  • A layer of paint is applied to the surface with a velor roller or spray gun (see Types of spray guns: how to choose the right one).
  • After the coating has dried, another layer of paint is applied.
  • The surface is left to dry for at least 24 hours.
  • The door is covered with transparent protective varnish.

Tip: Avoid sanding too deep, as this may damage the coating and expose the chip layer.

How to paint a MDF door

MDF surfaces require careful paint selection.

This could be:

  • Water based acrylic composition.
  • Paint containing tone and varnish.

You can paint MDF doors with a roller, but better with a spray gun, so that the composition is distributed more evenly over the surface.

So that there are no irregularities on the MDF, you need a surface in advance:

  • Remove old coating.
  • Remove dust.
  • Eliminate existing roughness.
  • Filter the paint.

Advice: When painting an old door with antique or wood grain, one must not forget that some compounds are toxic when evaporated. You need to take care of the ventilation of the room and use personal protective equipment.

How to create wood grain imitation on the surface

You can make a drawing under a tree on any surfaces. At the same time, the technologies will differ only at the preparatory stage, and the drawing is performed in the following sequence:

  • The canvas is painted with light paint, it can be white.
  • A layer of liquid soap is applied to the entire surface. Before painting a white door under a tree, the time is given for the drying of the base paint applied to it, which is indicated on the package.
  • A darker layer of paint is applied, creating curls that will simulate wood fibers, and the liquid soap is rinsed off.
  • After this procedure, the dissolved paint dries, creating a pattern that imitates the natural look of wood.

The high price of natural wood doors does not always allow you to purchase them. To do this, you can consider the stages of creating a wood pattern on a relatively cheap plywood.

Wherein:

  • A special brush is purchased.

  • The tool moves along the surface with movements similar to the process of brushing.
  • The door is painted after this procedure in different colors. In doing so, the dye spreads and creates a pattern that resembles wood fibers due to changes in the structure.
  • For staining, several dyes should be used at once, which will form the required pattern due to the presence of different penetrating ability in the compositions.
  • After the dyes have dried, the entire plywood surface is sanded.

When creating a door, a woody drawing can:

  • Emphasize.
  • To be created.

Despite the difference in technologies, and materials for their implementation, the common points are the choice of materials that should fit each other.

For example:

  • When creating a clearer image on the finished wood structure, it is necessary to use different impregnations.
  • When used for finishing varnish, the impregnation should be stain, not drying oil.
  • Many materials have good absorbency, which requires the surface to be treated with paints and impregnations several times.

What wood-like paint for doors is best suited, how to apply it on the surface, you can see the video in this article.

An MDF interior door is one of the most common and affordable options. We will discuss what it is, what operational properties a web of this material has. How and what to paint a door from MDF. The article contains reviews of the owners and recommendations for do-it-yourself installation. For convenience, the material is provided with video instructions.

What are MDF doors

The material consists of dried wood fibers and binders, the main of which is lignin. These are natural raw materials, at a price significantly lower than solid wood. This is largely due to the popularity of MDF doors. The construction of the leaf consists of a wooden frame, a honeycomb filler enclosed in it and sheets of chip material on both sides. In addition to the democratic cost, the doors demonstrate the following positive characteristics:

How is the MDF door leaf

  • Resistance to mechanical damage;
  • Durability;
  • Immunity to fungi and mold;
  • Possibility of installation in a room with a humid environment;
  • No deformation due to temperature changes;
  • Ease of installation;
  • Light weight;
  • Fire safety;
  • Contains no toxic substances.

Door leaves made of MDF can be decorated like a stone, imitate a wood texture, etc. They are often painted in a wide variety of colors. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the sheet used in the structure. This indicator should be at least 3-5 mm. The thickness of MDF is important for strength and sound insulation. In addition, the internal filling of the structure also affects the ability to protect against extraneous noise.

Important: Corrugated cardboard inside the door leaf does not provide good sound insulation, while polyurethane foam does an excellent job with this function.

How and what to paint a door from MDF

The staining result directly depends on the chosen paint. The following options are suitable for MDF:

  • Nitro paint;
  • Acrylic;
  • Alkyd;
  • Water-dispersive;
  • Oil enamel.

When working with most dyes, it is necessary to provide good ventilation, ventilation, it is advisable to use a respirator.

One of the significant disadvantages of MDF doors is the complexity of restoration. It is extremely difficult to restore a damaged canvas made of this material. Therefore, most often a new door is purchased instead of a broken one. You can save a lot by buying not a laminated version, but a cheaper one, for painting. In this case, with the minimum cost of finance and labor, you can get a door that fully meets the entire color scheme of the room.

If it is decided to renovate an old door by painting, it must be prepared. The canvas is removed from the hinges, the old coating is completely removed from its surface. This can be done using special washes, a grinder or heating with a construction hairdryer. Next, the canvas is sanded and, if necessary, putty.

Before work, all surfaces that cannot be stained are carefully sealed with molar tape. It is recommended to paint directly from top to bottom. The ends are tinted last. Most colorants are applied in two layers. This achieves brightness and color saturation.

DIY installation

Installation of MDF doors differs little from similar structures made of other materials. You need to prepare the doorway by cleaning and adjusting it to size. The box must be firmly inserted into the opening and securely fastened. MDF is able to bend under the pressure of expanding polyurethane foam. You can avoid this trouble by using special brackets during installation. Or, you can place strong plates between the canvas and the box to protect it from deformation. Sometimes a fully assembled door unit is installed.

Council. When installing a MDF door, it is advisable to use foam with low expansion strength. This will reduce the risk of deformation of the box.

Although the material itself is moisture resistant, manufacturers rarely laminate or paint the back of the box. This becomes a weak point as moisture penetrates from there. To protect the box from deformation, you need to independently coat its inner side with silicone or impregnation.

The next stage is fixed, the canvas is hung. Be sure to use the level. All distortions are eliminated. Then the fittings are installed, cut in. Getting started, watch a video that clearly shows the process.

Owner reviews

Interior doors made of MDF have received conflicting reviews. Most of the negative characteristics are associated with unscrupulous manufacturers or sellers. After all, under a beautiful facade it is impossible to see the inner content. So, after the purchase, it turned out that the thickness of the slab was only 2 mm. That is not enough for a door leaf under constant load.

Sometimes thick cardboard is used instead of MDF. The service life of such structures is minimal, and the quality is low. A manufacturer who has saved money at all stages of production can offer a very attractive price. However, it is precisely because of non-compliance with manufacturing technology that MDF doors have a bad reputation. The owners write that they swell, scratch heavily, flake off, etc.

However, doors produced in accordance with the rules and standards have earned flattering reviews. They were purchased from conscientious sellers. The owners describe them as easy to care for, durable and really resistant to high humidity. But their price is no longer as low as most consumers hope.

Approaching the choice of MDF doors wisely and carefully, you can purchase a durable and beautiful thing. Caring for a quality product is reduced to removing dirt from the surface. Installation of such a block will not be difficult. The weight of MDF is small, it is easy to work with it.

How to paint an MDF door with your own hands: video

Painting MDF: painting technology for MDF products

The door leaf you have made or a semi-finished door leaf without external finishing, purchased in the store, can be painted with your own hands or its surface finished in various non-standard ways (photo on the right, click to download a larger file).

As a rule, finishing or updating the appearance of a door consists in painting it with ordinary ready-made varnish-and-paint materials of various colors. This method of painting the door is practiced everywhere, regardless of the popularity of the company or the qualifications of specialists. That's just how everyone does it.

short and important explanations,

which may be useful to you not only on the topic of this article.

But, if you use non-standard methods of painting a door with your own hands, then you can turn a new or old door leaf into an exclusive one that not only pleases the eye, but also attracts attention with its unusualness. At the same time, the cost of painting a door can be ridiculously small, and the result will exceed all your expectations.

Do-it-yourself high-quality door painting technology.

For convenient work with any type of door painting, first of all, you need to prepare a workplace that can be located in the yard, in the garage or any utility room of your site or just in an empty room in a city apartment.

To equip the workplace, you just need to put 2 stools on a flat surface, on which you should put a piece of board with a length of no more than the width of the door leaf. A lint-free, dense cloth should be placed on the boards so that after turning the door over, there are no scratches, dents or other unwanted marks on the varnished surface. On the stand prepared in this way, put the door leaf, prepared for painting.

With this position of the door leaf, it is very convenient to paint the door. You will appreciate it in the process of work - the door leaf is located at a distance of at least 40 centimeters from the floor, which allows you to paint with a spray gun without raising dust from the floor with a spray gun air stream. In addition, it creates the convenience of painting the door while standing upright without straining the spine.

Painting the doors with varnish or paint should be done in the following order: using a spray gun, first blow out all the ends, bypassing the door around, then cover the door surface, starting from yourself and not stopping until the entire surface is completely painted.

Each painting pass should start and end outside the door leaf. In no case should you paint the door sections towards each other (although this is more convenient). That is, first paint the door halfway, and then, moving to the other side, continue painting the second half of the door. Want to screw up? Try it.

This means that no matter how wide the door is and no matter how short the arms are, painting should be done from any (convenient), but only from one side from start to finish.

Painting the other side of the door can be started only after the first side (layer) has completely dried, but not earlier than 2 hours when using nitrocellulose paints and not earlier than the complete drying time indicated on the package for other types of paints and varnishes.

Important! The painted surfaces of the door seams and ends never flake off, as they are not glued, but painted. Flaking trim is a disease of brand doors.

Consider several ways to paint a door with your own hands.

The first way to paint the door.

The method that is most often used in everyday life when updating the appearance of the door leaf. How is this usually done? A ready-to-use paint of the required color is purchased. The door is lightly sanded and the door leaf is painted with a brush or roller. Not the most difficult, but not the most original way of painting a door, but it is very often applicable.

But if you approach painting the door creatively, you can make it look almost indistinguishable from the new one. What needs to be done to ensure that the painting of a new or old door is of high quality? First of all, before painting the door with any kind of paints and varnishes, its surface must be well prepared and the surface must be primed.

The primer is a 30% solution of the paint

which will subsequently be applied as a decorative layer.

That is, the ready-to-use paint from the manufacturer's plant must be diluted with a solvent (thinner) in a ratio of one to three.

The primed surface of the door leaf will not only increase the adhesion of the paint layer, but also allow you to see all the flaws of the prepared surface. It is not forbidden to make additional leveling of the surface after applying the primer by partially or completely re-filling the surface.

If the surface quality suits you, then we paint the door with paint of the selected color in two layers using a spray gun. Painting the door with a spray gun allows you to get the highest quality surface, not only in appearance, but also in strength.

For transparent door finishing, I advise you to use colored NC paints for painting. The required varnish color can be obtained by adding art oil paints to the varnish on any basis (NC, PF).

When using NC paints, after the second layer has dried (after 20-30 minutes), the entire surface of the door leaf is lightly sanded with fine or worn emery cloth to remove roughness, dust is swept away with a thick brush and covered in one layer with matte furniture or parquet varnish. When using slow drying paints, recoat only after the first coat is completely dry.

You can focus on the drying time of the paint according to the instructions attached to each paint package. But it should be borne in mind that the drying time is indicated with the obligatory maintenance of the appropriate temperatures and humidity. When the temperature drops below 20 degrees and the humidity of the ambient air rises, the drying time must necessarily be increased.

By running the palm of your hand over the painted surface, you can feel the quality of the finished surface. We cover any surface with varnish in order not to spoil the color of the painting with light sanding. If we try to lightly sand a simple painted surface to remove small lint, we get clearly visible stripes that spoil the entire decorative look.

That is, the paint cannot be sanded, but the varnished surface can.

While one side of the door is drying, let's talk about nitrocellulose enamel. What does the use of NC paints give when painting a door? First of all, it is the speed of finishing the door and any painting work. In addition, NC paint allows you to work in unsuitable rooms (in the garage, in the yard in the open air) - the quick drying of the paint layer excludes the adhesion of specks, dust or small insects.

To use any other types of paints, the drying of which to touch takes more than half an hour, a special sterile room is required, which naturally complicates the work.

Try to paint in shade rather than in direct sunlight. If we paint the door in the sun, we can get a disgusting result. This will happen because the surface of the door leaf may have too high a temperature and the NC paint will dry out instantly, without having time to adhere to the surface.

But if we cover the door leaf heated by the sun with parquet varnish, we will get an exceptionally hard and durable surface. Notice the difference and use these features as appropriate.

So, one side of the door is dry, we turn it over and paint on the other side of the door leaf using the same technology. And not necessarily in the same color, because in another room there may be a different finish. You cannot buy doors painted to match the decoration of your apartment, and even in different colors on each side in the store, but it is ridiculously easy to make such a miracle with your own hands.

And if you insert a stained glass window into a monochromatic door. made with your own hands, then from an ordinary door you will get such a charm, which you can see by clicking on the template of photo 1.

So, a single-color door painting is not the worst, but quite a normal option. The final design and the selection of the color of the door painting, corresponding to the overall design of the room, are important.

Dry the painted door leaf for 24 hours. We fix the hinges and install the door. In some cases, to achieve a better finish on the door, the door hinges are attached prior to painting.

Do-it-yourself door painting

If the door has lost its spectacular appearance, is dilapidated and outdated, then surely it's time to paint it. It should be noted that such a process as painting a door is absolutely uncomplicated and can be carried out with ease and, most importantly, very quickly by almost any person, even those far from the construction theme.

Tools and materials

Painting a door with your own hands is a very simple process, but you still have to prepare some tools and materials. In particular, from the materials you will need the actual paint itself (the best for such purposes is oil), a primer for paint (round and flat), as well as a little mastic (in the event that you have to close up ugly irregularities in the door leaf).

Of the tools for carrying out such a process as painting a door with your own hands, you will need a table or construction trestles, a grinder, a spatula, paint brushes, sandpaper, as well as a standard "gentleman's set" - a screwdriver, hammer and nails.

Door painting process

All work on painting a door begins with removing it from its hinges. It is worth noting that the process is quite simple, but if the door is heavy, then it is better to enlist the help of assistants. After dismantling the door itself, all the fittings (handles, lock pads, locks) are removed from it and it either leans against the wall at an angle (which is not very convenient for painting), or is placed horizontally on a previously prepared trestle (in some cases, you will have to use two of these support). It should be noted that it is much easier to carry out all painting work on a flat horizontal surface than if the door leaf is tilted.

3. After cleaning the door, fresh wood must be coated with a special primer. This must be done so that the paint is not absorbed too quickly and its costs are not too high.

4. Directly painting the door itself begins with the largest surfaces of the canvas. It should be noted that after the completion of the painting work on the largest surfaces, the ribs and various fastening parts are painted (if, of course, this is necessary).

After applying the paint coat, carefully inspect the door. In the event that one layer of paint is not enough, then you can apply another second. But, the next layer of paint can be applied only when the first one is polished.

In addition to the above painting technology with the use of oil dyes, there is another way to paint a door, but only a tint composition (special impregnation for wood) is used as the main material in it. As a rule, such paint is sold in any specialty store and it will not be difficult to purchase it.
