Clock with a jigsaw. Plywood clocks: materials and tools, manufacturing, preparation for work, cutting out blanks, assembly and finishing

Try to cut out such a craft. Your loved ones will surely like it by placing it in a conspicuous place, for example, on a shelf. To make such a craft, you will need the following:

Sawing tools.

Preparing your desktop

First of all, you need to prepare your table on which you will work. There should be no unnecessary things on it and every tool should be at hand. Not everyone has their own desktop and probably already thought about creating one. Making a table is not difficult - it is difficult to choose a place for it in the house. The ideal option is an insulated balcony, on which you can complete your craft at any time. I already wrote about preparing the table in a separate article and tried to describe the whole process of creating it in as much detail as possible. If you do not know how to prepare your workplace, then read the next Article. After you have completed the process of creating a table, try to start choosing your future craft.

Choosing quality material

The main material is plywood. Her choice is always difficult. Each of us has probably faced such a problem as peeling plywood from the end part and asked the question, what is the delamination from? Well, of course, this is mainly due to low-quality plywood. If you have not picked up the jigsaw for the first time, then you can pick up plywood from the remains of the previous craft. If you are new to sawing and do not have plywood, then buy it at a hardware store. It is always difficult to choose material for cutting. You should always choose plywood carefully, more often look at the defects of the tree (knots, cracks) and draw conclusions. The difficulty in choosing plywood lies in the fact that no matter how wrong its flaws and shelf life. For example, you bought plywood, cleaned it, translated the drawing and suddenly it began to delaminate. Of course, this happened to almost everyone and it's oh, how unpleasant. So it is better to pay attention when choosing and choose good plywood. I wrote a special Article in which all the principles of choosing plywood are described step by step.

Plywood stripping

We clean our plywood with sandpaper. As you already know, "Medium-grained" and "Fine-grained" skin is used to clean plywood in cutting. In hardware stores, you probably saw skins (in another way, sandpaper), it is they that we need. In the work you will need "Coarse-grained", "Medium-grained" and "Fine-grained" skin. Each of them has its own property, but completely different spraying, in which it is classified. The "coarse" skin is used for processing rough plywood, i.e. which has a lot of defects, chips, as well as cracks.
"Medium-grain" skin is used for processing plywood after "Coarse" skin and has a small dusting. "Fine-grained" or otherwise "Nulevka". This sandpaper serves as the final peeling process for plywood. It gives the plywood a smoothness, and therefore the plywood will be pleasant to the touch. Sand the harvested plywood step by step, starting with medium-grained and ending with fine emery. Sand along the layers, not across. A well-sanded surface should be even, perfectly smooth, glossy in the light and silky to the touch. How best to prepare plywood for cutting and which sandpaper is better to choose Read here. After stripping, check the plywood for burrs and slight irregularities. If there are no visible defects, then you can proceed to the process of translating the drawing.

Drawing translation

For me, drawing translation has always been the main process in my work. I will tell you a couple of rules, as well as tips for a high-quality translation of a drawing. Many people translate the drawing onto plywood not only with a pencil and copying, but also with the help of "Black Ribbon", glue the drawing with plywood, then wash off the drawing with water and the drawing markings remain on the plywood. In general, there are many ways, but I will tell you about the most common way. To transfer a drawing to prepared plywood, you must use a copy, a ruler, a sharp pencil and a non-writing pen. Fix the drawing in plywood using buttons or just hold it with your left hand. Check if the drawing fits the dimensions. Arrange the clock drawing so that you can use a sheet of plywood as economically as possible. Translate the drawing with a non-writing pen and ruler. You shouldn't rush, because your future craft depends on the drawing.

We drill holes in the details

As you have already noticed, there are parts of the grooves in the details that need to be cut from the inside. To cut out such parts, you need to drill holes in them using a hand drill or, as in the old fashioned way, make holes with an awl. By the way, the hole diameter must be at least 1 mm, otherwise you can damage the elements of the drawing, which, alas, sometimes are difficult to restore. In order not to damage your work table when drilling holes, place a plank under the workpiece so as not to damage the work table. Drilling holes alone is always difficult, and therefore ask a friend to help you in your business.

Sawing out parts

There are many rules for cutting, but you need to base on the most common ones. The first step is to cut out the inner parts, only then along the outer pattern. There is no need to rush when cutting. The main thing is to keep the jigsaw at a 90 degree angle when cutting. Saw parts along the lines you marked exactly. The jigsaw must always move evenly up and down. Also, do not forget to monitor your posture. Try to avoid bevels and irregularities. If you get off the line while cutting, don't worry. Such bevels, irregularities can be removed with flat files or "Coarse" sandpaper.

Recreation

We often get tired when sawing. Often, fingers and eyes, which are always tense, get tired. When working, of course, everyone gets tired. In order to reduce the load, you need to do a couple of exercises. Exercises you can see here. Do the exercises several times in the process.

Cleaning Parts

You should always carefully clean the details of the future craft. At the very beginning of the work, you already cleaned the plywood with sandpaper. Now you have a small part of plywood stripping. Use a “medium-grained” sandpaper to clean the edges of the parts and the back of the plywood. "Fine-grained" skin is considered the final stage of cleaning parts. It is better to clean the front of the parts with a fine sandpaper. Take your time when processing plywood. You can also use a rounded file, with which it is convenient to clean the inside of the holes. Try to get the details without burrs and unevenness.

Assembling parts

Assembling the parts of our craft here is not so difficult. In order to carry out the correct assembly of parts, you need to read the following Article, which describes in detail all the details of the assembly. After the parts are assembled into one common craft without any problems, then proceed to gluing them.

We glue the details

It is necessary to glue the shelf parts using PVA or titan glue. You don't need to pour a lot of glue. It is better to tie the assembled craft with glue with a strong thread, tighten and put to dry. The craft is glued for about 10-15 minutes.

Burning crafts

To decorate our craft with a pattern (for example, along the edges of the craft), you will need an electric burner. It can be very difficult to burn a pattern beautifully. To burn out the patterns, you must first draw the pattern with a pencil. You can read how to work with the electric burner and add patterns to the shelf here.

Varnishing crafts

If you wish, you can transform our craft by covering it with varnish "Woodwork" is better colorless. Read how best to varnish the craft. Try to choose a quality varnish. Perform varnishing with a special glue brush. Do not hurry. Try not to leave visible streaks or scratches on the craft.

The idea to create a clock from wood hung in my head for a very long time, it was ripening so to speak.
At the time I worked in a woodworking factory, it was a sin not to take the opportunity to do something for myself.
So, having rummaged through the network, I found several sites where they offered to buy ready-made drawings / models. One of the sites had drawings available in PDF format. It was possible to buy, but it was interesting to rebuild it yourself, if necessary, make changes to the drawings.
Site itself: http://www.woodenclocks.co.uk/index.htm

Assembly:

Of course, I wrote all the processing myself. The processing was written in PowerMILL.
Processing of the dial and small things.

Writing gear handling.

The clock was made of walnut and oak. Walnut frame, dial, hands, some small details. The walnut was used with a thickness of 16mm.
All gears are made of oak. The so-called "deck" blank is a 3mm thick veneer that is glued together under a press and calibrated to a size of 8mm. Made from re-glued material, tk. believed that the plywood would be more durable and less prone to warping.
I bought the axles in a store, 6, 8 and 10 mm thick from beech. There is no equipment at the plant to make such a trifle)

All processing was done on a FlexiCAM machine. This is not such a small machine, in the photo a sheet of plywood 2.5 * 1.5 meters is processed. In the photo there are completely different details, about them it is possible like another time. He also did the machining on the machine himself, did not entrust the operator. But, somehow the hands were busy and the camera was not at hand, so there is no photo of the processing itself on the machine ((.

Blanks after the machine:

Sanded gears

First build

And this is a minor assistant. Grabbed the halves of the frame and let's run with them. Shouts - I'm a tractor!
After it I had to glue one of the halves. Fortunately, wood is a good material, you can't even find where it glued after gluing.

Dry build

Side view.
This version does not have a single metal part yet. When I just read the author's site, he mentioned that axes should not be made of wood, there will be problems with them, but then I somehow missed it.

Tiny seconds hand

He covered all details with teak oil. Oil does not change the texture of the material, but highlights, makes the color more saturated. Well, the details get a little matte too. I like oil more than varnish.

Blocks for hanging loads.
If the load is attached directly to the clock, then the factory will be enough for 12 hours. But, this is not enough, and such a design interfered with the table under the clock. I put the rope up to the ceiling and into a corner where the load doesn't bother anyone. I applied a pulley block). As a result, the plant lasts for a couple of days. When the load is at the floor - the small one likes to kick it, pull it))). I swear.

The material is striped - I took scraps from blanks at the factory. Such material - plywood of walnut and maple is called laminate. Butts are made of it, very beautiful are obtained. But, it's kind of exclusive. Usually it is a nut for oil or beech for painting.

After coating with oil, it turned out that the watch did not want to walk. The skinned ones just walked without problems, and then they started to stop. I had to grind all the axles to the holes, lubricate with graphite. In general, on the next hours I'll put bearings everywhere, well, it's in ... such problems.

Anchor closer.
While I was regulating, I got carried away and cut off the excess. I had to stick some meat on one of the teeth of the anchor.

Escape wheel
In general, a watch is a piece that requires precision and accuracy in its manufacture. If you have not cleaned a tooth somewhere, left a burr, they will stop.

Final assembly
The author had to make changes in the design of the mechanism of the plant. Brian suggested making the plant a key. Initially, I did so, but after a month of operation I realized that if you did not redo it, then the clock would end up standing. Imagine, in order to start for a day, you need to make 24 revolutions of the wheel on which the thread is wound. 24 turns are 48 hand movements in half a turn.
Taking into account the fact that the watch is hung high - the hand is simply trite. I changed it so that you pull on the black cord - the clock starts. Fast and easy.

Preparing the wall mount site

Wall mounting. The wall turned out to be uneven, the upper attachment point had to be moved a few millimeters from the wall, otherwise the pendulum touches the bottom of the wall.

Installation of blocks, pass the cord through the blocks

Preparation for cargo. So far, the dirty pipe has not had enough lead inside to finish it. In general, a load of one and a half kilograms is enough for the work of the clock. I plan to hang the load on a triple chain hoist so that the plant lasts for three days, respectively, the load will need to be somewhere in 4 kg. The pipe will need to be shortened a little, but not much. As a result, the length will be somewhere around 330 mm.

Well, and what happened in the end, a few pictures.

Many people think that wooden clocks are not accurate clocks. No, it is not. This is a mechanism, everything is tied to the movement of the pendulum, and therefore to the force of gravity. I stopped adjusting them when the accuracy became about 30 seconds per day. I did not embed a threaded metal bar into the pendulum, but the load simply walks on the tree with an interference fit. If a threaded bar is embedded, it can be adjusted to an accuracy in seconds.
The goal in the manufacture was to make a beautiful and useful thing, and not to make a chronometer))).

What was unexpected - the clock is quite loud. Those. they hang in the kitchen and at night you can hear them in the room)). This is the reason why they hang in the kitchen. Jona swore. She didn't like them at all
But I like. And I like the way they tick.
They create comfort with their measured stroke.

The video can be watched on a page in my world.

Ordinary wall clocks can be purchased at any store, the choice is wide enough. But a thing made by someone with their own hands will look much more spectacular. In addition, it will serve as a reminder of the pleasant moments associated with the author of the work. Therefore, I bring to your attention a small master class on making watches from a regular sheet of plywood.

To work, you will need tools:
- saw;
- drill;
- sandpaper;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- various brushes;
- hairdryer;
- iron;
- scissors;
- foam sponge.

And from the materials you need:
- plywood sheet;
- acrylic paints;
- acrylic primer;
- PVA glue;
- Polish for hair;
- acrylic lacquer;
- water;
- clockwork.

First of all, you should decide on the shape of the future hours and their sizes. Then we draw a contour and cut it out. We clean the edges with sandpaper to form a small chamfer.

On the workpiece, you need to mark the center through which the clockwork will be mounted. We draw marks on the plywood with a pencil.

Draw two intersecting center lines.

Now you should make a hole at the intersection of the lines with a drill.

We clean the edges of the hole, if necessary, we bore it so that the fastening for the hands of the clockwork passes freely.
We cover the workpiece with acrylic primer in two layers with intermediate drying in 1 hour.

The sides of the workpiece should also be covered with soil.

Choosing your favorite napkin. It must be three-layer.

Now we dilute PVA glue with water in equal parts in a small container, mix.

We cover the workpiece with the resulting mixture and dry completely with a hairdryer.

We put the napkin on top of the blank. We tear off the part that goes beyond the contour of the watch, taking into account the fact that a small part should be bent onto the reverse side of the workpiece.

We put a sheet of paper on top and carefully iron the napkin through it. First the front side, then the sides.

We fold the rest of the napkin to the back side and glue it with a brush with glue diluted in water. Let it dry thoroughly.

If you wish, you can make some elements a little brighter with acrylic paint.

Since the hands of the required color were not available when buying a movement, I just bought the cheapest ones, they turned out to be green.

I just paint them with acrylic paint.

After the paint has dried, I cover it with three coats of acrylic varnish.

In the photo, the varnish is just applied and therefore it seems white, after drying it will become transparent.

We return to the watch case. The napkin must be covered with acrylic varnish. If you do this right away, the napkin will wrinkle. Therefore, first apply a layer of hairspray, a little and evenly

Now you can start coating the workpiece with acrylic varnish.

Leave to dry for 2 hours
Before applying the dial, apply at least 5 coats of acrylic varnish, remembering to dry each one thoroughly.

The selection of plywood depends on the size of the parts, in this case you will need a lot of plywood. Before transferring the drawing to plywood, sand it with a coarse grain, and finish with a fine one. DOWNLOAD DRAWING. Pendulum clock.
