Do you have a couple of unnecessary chairs that are idle? Today we will tell you how to make a cool French-style bench out of them, which is ideal for decorating an interior.

On our balcony we found old, wooden chairs, which are about 50-60 years old. They had a soft seat and were made of fine wood. At the moment when we took up this business, they were already falling apart.

We called the bench French because we saw a similar bench from Ballard Designs. We also want to emphasize that this is not one of those benches that are made according to the principle of lining up chairs in a row, where plywood is later applied to them. After all, it looks a little strange, we will make a bench in a classic style.

If you still make such a bench, you will surely have your own thoughts and ideas on how to make it better. We will be glad to accept your advice and work. Send them to us by mail, we will be happy to share them on our website.

After looking at our chairs, we found out that they are fake, although they looked quite expensive. After that, they were safely taken to the farthest corner of the workshop, to await their fate. At that moment, we simply could not get rid of them. One fine day in May, one of our craftsmen suddenly started making our bench without us. This is not like him, because usually we have to persuade him for a long time, to do something, of course, except for custom-made furniture, this is his direct responsibility. So, let's begin!

Step one: Find chairs.

“We need to find two chairs that look good from the outside. If your chairs have a slight backrest angle, that will be fine. This backrest will create a comfortable and not very angular look. It is desirable that the seat of the chair be screwed with nuts and bolts to the main body. This will make it easier for us to attach the base under the bench to our chairs.

- Remove the front legs and seat. On our fake chairs, everything was kept on glue, we easily tore off the two front legs, and removed the seat. Thus, we are left with two chair backs.

If you can unscrew the front legs on your chairs, it is better to take this opportunity. If the legs are broken off, parts of the tree may remain sticking out.

Step two: We make an inseparable seat.

- Make a rectangular frame. Any length of the bench can be made. It depends on how many people you plan to fit on it. We took the materials for our frame in an old ikea worktop. After the frame is ready, it must be fixed with screws as shown in the picture above. Use strong screws to fix the frame.

- We fix the frame. We drilled holes for the chairs' seats, if they weren't fake, and attached our frame. On each side, we made three holes and screwed in three screws to distribute the weight evenly. A little lower, we drilled a couple more holes, and screwed in a future shelf for various things. Our goal is to make the bench safe to sit on, so don't spare the bolts, we ended up with 7 screws on each side.

Step three. Create the bottom shelf.

“Even after we attached the main frame to our bench, the structure was still pretty shaky. To avoid falls and breaks of the bench, we decided to fasten the two sides with another wooden rectangle. We will use it as a shelf. Carefully measure the distance between the legs, and do not forget about the main principle "Measure seven times - cut one." Do not repeat our mistakes, measure correctly.

- We nail the partitions. We didn't want our bench to look awkward or bulky. Instead of a plywood sheet, which was originally supposed to be located on the bottom frame, we nailed 5 crossbars. Used for this ordinary, small carnations.

Step four. We skin and paint.

Remove all irregularities with sandpaper. After that, if there are empty gaps between the frames and the frame, we fill them with construction foam or plaster. After that, once again we go through with sandpaper. If you leave the gaps unfilled, over time, moisture will accumulate there and gradually destroy our bench from the inside. If you don't have any plaster or foam on hand, just paint all these holes.

Bench painting. We used spray paint, a delicate cream color. Three uniform layers were applied and allowed to dry.

The cost of a spray paint in Tashkent starts from 10 thousand soums. Not at all more cost for an entire bench.

Step five. Making the seat.

To make the seat , we need a piece of plywood, chipboard, MDF or fiberboard. From this we will build the upper part of the bench.

- Upholstery the seat. For soft filling, we used a synthetic winterizer. If you don't have one at hand, you can pull out the cotton wool from the old mattresses. There she is in abundance, she is quite suitable. Or the quickest and cheapest way is to buy a small piece of foam. It is sold in stores with furniture fittings or household items. goods. It is necessary to spread the filler on plywood so that there is about 1 centimeter of void around the perimeter. The material for covering the bench is also of your choice. We used a piece of unnecessary sheet. Covering our soft filler with a cloth, we wrapped the edges under the bottom of the bench and stapled it there.

- We attach the seat to the body. For mounting, we used an L-shaped bracket. Although everything would have held perfectly with ordinary bolts, we decided to protect ourselves and use them.

Our bench is ready! All we have left is to decide whether the pillow will be located there or not. In an unfamiliar environment, with needles in hand, we decided to try. Taking the remnants of the sheet that we had left from the cover of the bench and the synthetic winterizer, we began to sew and fill our pillow. It turned out quite well for people who have been making custom-made furniture for many years. Making such a bench will take you half a day, or maybe all day. If you want to suddenly do something with your own hands, this bench is a great option to start with. In the courtyard of your own house or in the country, this piece of furniture will be not only useful, but also beautiful. And having decorated it with decorative pillows, the bench will be an excellent tool for decorating a room or site.

I hope your bench is as strong as ours. It does not stagger or even sway under a load of about 200kg. And if something went wrong, or you just don't have enough time, patience or strength, but you want to get such a bench. You can order it in the custom-made furniture section. And we will not tell anyone that it was not you who did it.

We think this is a great way to save old chairs and give them a second life. Send your work to us by mail. We will be glad to show the world what you have done.

Show a little imagination, you will succeed.

Home bench

The set of kitchen chairs has fallen into disrepair. But just one little idea, and they became the basis for a charming bench. Comfortable spacious furniture made of chairs with your own hands will take its place in the hallway so that everyone who enters can sit down and change their shoes.

What you need to work

Before you start creating a bench, prepare everything you need:

  • Three old chairs. If you have a choice, take the best preserved ones.
  • 3 or 2 boards. The amount depends on the width of the lumber. Put together, they become a seat.
  • 2 handrails from an old chair. If not, select the appropriate planks.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Drill with drill.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Clamps.
  • Jigsaw.
  • Wood putty.
  • Dark paint on wood in a spray can.
  • Blue paint and roller.
  • Adhesive protective tape.

Operating procedure

  1. Consider the chairs you choose. 2 at its best, place it on the sides of the future shop. Check connections. If they loosen during use, fasten them additionally with screws or self-tapping screws.
  2. Remove the old soft seats from the chairs.
  3. With a drill on self-tapping screws, install the railing from the old chairs to the outer chairs. If there are no such ready-made parts, make yourself a shape convenient for you.
  4. Look carefully - it is necessary that the chairs standing next to each other are in close contact with the side surfaces of the front legs. If this does not happen, you can trim these places a little, then sand them with sandpaper.
  5. Now that the adjacent legs are snug against one another, apply wood glue to one of each pair. Then secure them in pairs with clamps until the connection is solid.

Attention! So that there are no dents on the legs from the clamps, use small, even pieces of boards, plywood, and thick cardboard as spacers.

  1. In the backs of the chairs there are metal rods of a metallic color. To paint them, first cover the wooden parts with protective adhesive tape. Then we spray dark paint on metal parts from a can.
  2. You can start assembling the seat. Three planks cut to the length of the seat should be adjusted to fit. Then, small grooves for the armrests should be cut on the sides.
  3. Using self-tapping screws, attach the two outer boards to the sides of the chair base.
  4. To reinforce the structure, place small wooden inserts between the non-touching parts of the adjacent chairs, as shown in the photo below. Attach them with glue and on the self-tapping screws by screwing them in from the back.
  5. Fill the bumps and holes on the face of the boards with putty.
  6. After drying, sand the surface of the boards and the sides, slightly round their edges.
  7. Using a roller, apply paint to the bench seat. Do not forget to pre-stick the protective tape on the parts of the backrest, railings and legs that are nearby.
  8. After the paint has dried, we take sandpaper and slightly three legs and wooden parts of the back, so that the bench is evenly aged, acquires a somewhat rustic look.

The work has been completed. Once you've put a bench in your hallway, take care of the decor. Several original bright pillows will decorate the shop and make it more comfortable.

Original bench around the tree

Our bench will be a wonderful decoration for any garden. On a hot sunny day, she will allow everyone to relax in the shade under a tree at once. Everyone will get an equally comfortable place, because the shop itself is located in a circle.

Of course, such garden furniture can be purchased in a store, but it will cost many times more. To make a do-it-yourself bench from a chair no worse than one made by a master, you do not need to have professional work skills. It will be enough for you to get acquainted with the master class and prepare everything you need.

Preparation for work

To create a garden bench, you need to use:

  • 6 completely identical old (or new) kitchen chairs.
  • Wooden planks 2.5 cm wide.
  • Sandpaper or sanding machine.
  • Drill with self-tapping screws.
  • Saw.
  • White paint, brush.
  • Roulette, pencil.

detailed instructions

  1. Dismantle the seats on the prepared 6 chairs - they will not be needed in this project.
  2. If necessary, sand the surfaces with sandpaper or a sander.
  3. Paint the chairs white.
  4. After the paint has dried, place the chairs in a circle with their backs facing inward. As you guessed, the bench will be outside. Given that the circle has 360 degrees, there are 60 degrees for each chair corner. Thus, we can try to calculate the size of the slats cut out for the seat. If it turns out a little inaccurate, you can correct the size.
  5. Cut 6 strips of the same length in turn. We fasten them to the chairs with self-tapping screws so that the center of each plank coincides with the center of the chair. As a result, each seat should have 6 slats, each one longer than the previous one.
  6. After the final adjustment of the length with sandpaper, sand the seats a little, remove any burrs and roughness.
  7. Use a tape measure to measure the distance between edges 1 and 6 of the plank. Cut the part to this size.
  8. Attaching it to the seat, outline the bevel with a pencil. Cut off the excess.
  9. Using glue and self-tapping screws, install the planks as shown in the photo below.
  10. Do the same with the rest of the future shop.
  11. Sand the installed parts so that you cannot get hurt if you touch them.
  12. Disassemble the structure again to paint the seat slats.

Congratulations! Your garden or yard bench is ready. It remains only to find a tree, the ground under which will be as flat as possible, otherwise your work may not collect. Take advantage of the advice - level the soil around the tree with mulch.
