Do-it-yourself wood ceiling installation. Wooden ceiling

Types of wooden ceilings and materials for their installation. Advantages and disadvantages of finishing. Step-by-step instructions for installing timber lath structures.

The content of the article:

A wood ceiling is a classic that has been proven for centuries and has been approved by thousands of satisfied homeowners. This type of finish has no competitors for the most part. The material used during installation always remains available to different segments of the population. A variety of design options can surprise even the most sophisticated skeptics with grace and showiness. We will tell you more about the types and methods of installing wooden ceilings further.

Advantages and disadvantages of a wooden ceiling

Traditional wooden ceilings remain relevant even in modern interiors. Due to the long list of positive qualities, many owners prefer this type of coverage to everyone else.

Among the benefits, the following play a significant role:

  • Simple and quick installation without specialist assistance.
  • Natural healing scent, noble rich color.
  • An extensive design that allows for different styles, the application of any formulations, the use of decorative elements.
  • Possibility of mounting modern lighting fixtures in suspended wooden structures.
  • High thermal insulation and sound insulation to ensure comfort in the home.
  • Neat natural look even in untreated state.
In fairness, it should be noted that wooden ceilings also have negative qualities. The following factors are considered to be disadvantages:
  1. The wood covering must be regularly treated with a flame retardant.
  2. Some of the materials used cannot be called heavy-duty and durable.
  3. Wood cladding requires constant air circulation.
The disadvantages of natural wood can also be attributed to its impressive cost. But such a disadvantage is easy to smooth out, saving on the services of professional installers.

Varieties of wooden ceilings

A long time ago, the time has passed when the ceiling surface was simply covered with a typical board. Today there are many samples of material and the possibilities of its installation.

Based on the method of execution, the following options for wooden ceilings can be distinguished:

  • Hemmed... Ceilings, which are finishes "hemmed" to a timber frame or ceiling beams. If installation is carried out in an apartment of a panel house, the lathing is attached to the concrete floor using dowels and a screwdriver. In this case, the structure will consist of beams (main and supporting sheathing) and filing in the form of lining, boards, panels or plywood.
  • Suspended... Popular designs that are often used in rooms with fairly high walls. False ceilings are also relevant in rooms where it is necessary to hide beams, wiring, communications, ventilation pipes, etc. The structure of this type of ceiling includes lathing, suspended from the ceiling, and wooden components, subsequently mounted on the frame.
  • Caisson... This type of ceiling is a repetitive polygonal depression between crossed beams. Such cladding, made of natural wood, is more like a work of art than a ceiling.
As an additional decorative element, choose one of the types of joints between the slats, among them there are such ceilings:
  1. Rack without slots - the panels are mounted joint to joint.
  2. Closed - decorative inserts are mounted in the holes between the slats.
  3. Open - the gaps between the slats remain empty.

Materials for wooden ceilings

For stylish false ceilings, suspended or coffered ceilings, natural high quality wood is often used in the form of panels, cassettes or lining. Natural environmentally friendly material for a wooden ceiling becomes even more effective after a thorough varnishing. Such a finish is worthy of any interior, but, unfortunately, not everyone is available.

A more budgetary option for a wooden ceiling is also the place to be. For the arrangement of such, materials are used that have a lower cost, but the same high characteristics. These include:

  • Plywood... For cladding ceilings, sheets are often used, consisting of thin wooden layers glued together. Primitive plywood with proper processing (varnishing, toning, etc.) can give a room a delightful look. In addition, such a material is easy to process, durable in operation, inexpensive and sufficiently moisture resistant.
  • Veneered panels... The use of this material is also considered budgetary, but at the same time more aesthetic as a result. Sheets of MDF or chipboard, lined with veneer, are able to create a neat, even coating with high soundproof and moisture resistant performance.
  • Wooden beams on the ceiling... Painted wood beams are a fresh contemporary design achievement that enhances every aspect of the interior. False beams made of polyurethane as a decorative element are a worthy and affordable alternative to natural wood. Depending on the preferences of the owner, the beams can be matched both to the tone of the ceiling cladding and in a contrasting color.
  • Lining... Simple universal raw material from boards of various species (linden, pine, oak, acacia, cedar, larch) with the same parameters, shape, size. Wooden ceilings lined with clapboard are always smooth and even, they can withstand cold and heat, and have high sound insulation performance. In addition, the lining is environmentally friendly and durable.
  • Wooden panels for the ceiling... Solid wood panels are expensive, but at the same time the most aesthetic cladding option. With this material, it is easy to maintain even the most complex picture of a classic interior.
  • Timber imitation... It is somewhat similar to clapboard, but it has more massive and wider parameters. Beams imitating timber can be solid or hollow, more suitable for ceiling decoration.
  • Chipped timber... A material used to create a stylish embossed surface. For its manufacture, a solid bar is split lengthwise into separate parts, which are then glued to the base with the smooth side.

On a note! Any of the above options for ceiling cladding assumes wall decoration with natural material or a high-quality imitation of natural texture. For example, wall decoration with natural stone, imitation tiles, wood panels, etc. is perfectly combined with the exquisite design of a wooden ceiling.

Do-it-yourself wooden rack ceiling installation

The technology of mounting a wooden slatted ceiling implies systemic fastening of slats to a frame assembled from a bar. A suspended structure of this type is able to provide a perfectly flat and tidy surface, hide any imperfections in the floor, hide ventilation shafts and communications.

Materials and tools for a wooden ceiling

The lining, which is optimally suited for the installation of a slatted ceiling, is a uniformly finished board with spike and groove edges. A similar type of rail is needed for cladding the ceiling in a closed type, without gaps between the panels. The average dimensions of the factory lining have the following parameters: thickness - 1.2-2.5 mm, length - 2-3 m, width - 7-15 cm.

Among the assortment, it is easy to find the Extra class lining - the highest quality and most expensive. It is made of mahogany, cedar or oak and is free from any knots or cracks. Reiki class A and B are characterized by a wide range of colors. Their defects are completely insignificant, therefore such material is considered strong and durable. Ceiling slats of class C are the most budgetary option, which is characterized by the presence of tangible defects in the form of irregularities, knots, small holes.

After choosing the right material, it is worth taking the necessary measures to prepare the tool. If not all the devices from the list are available in the household, it is better to borrow them from friends or rent them.

So, in order to install a wooden ceiling, you will need: a laser or hydraulic level, a painting thread, a jigsaw with an electric drive, a drill for concrete and an electric drill, a hammer, a screwdriver, cardboard for making holes in wood, a building corner, a tape measure, a pencil, usually from 1.5 m, plane, chisel.

For finishing paintwork, a separate list of materials and tools will be required, including suitable varnishes, rollers of the right sizes, high quality brushes and special solutions. Some owners still prefer to leave the wood flooring in its natural form without additional processing.

How to make a lathing for a wooden ceiling

To equip a wooden ceiling with your own hands, you need accurate horizontal markings. For its implementation, a hydraulic or laser level is used. Using the device, markings are made on the walls, which are then connected with a paint thread. In most cases, wooden slatted ceilings are lowered to the level of the intended lighting fixtures.

Further, the timber is screwed to the walls at the intended level using dowels and self-tapping screws. Thus, the contour of the frame is created along the perimeter of the room. All screw caps are recommended to be hidden in the material by 1-2 mm. After the installation of the contour, the transverse slats are attached, pre-stretching the fishing line from one wall to the opposite.

At the final stage of arranging the lathing, the timber is attached taking into account the pitch of the joints. It is also worth considering the size of the construction details. Docking of elements should not be carried out by weight, but on a bar.

Do not forget that all wooden components of the slatted ceiling must be treated with an antiseptic before installation.

Wiring for fixtures on a wooden ceiling

If 12 W devices are planned as lighting devices, it is worthwhile to take care of the convenient placement of the transformer and easy access to it in time.

All work is carried out in the following several stages:

  1. To install the lamps, specific points are determined and marked.
  2. At the connection point, a junction box is equipped, into which the wires are fed.
  3. Create channels for conducting the wire.
  4. A corrugation is put on the cable, which increases the level of safety.
  5. Secure the cable using fixed terminal blocks instead of the usual dangerous twists.
  6. At the end of the fixing, a lamp is connected in order to check the accuracy of the previously performed actions.
  7. If the circuit works fully, the power is turned off and the installation of the ceiling structure continues.

Thermal insulation and sound insulation of wooden ceilings

If a wooden slatted ceiling is installed in an apartment (except for the upper floor), there is no need for insulation. But if the work is done in a private house, you should think about high-quality insulation. In cases where the question is appropriate, the space between the ceiling and the frame is tightly filled with mineral wool.

Unlike insulation, sound insulation takes place in any room where the owners suffer from the lack of silence. The soundproofing system is similar to the previous one. Mineral wool is placed in the space between the frame and the ceiling, on which the vapor barrier is attached, carefully gluing all the joints.

Fixing wooden slats to the ceiling

When the frame is fixed, and the wiring is fixed, you can proceed with the installation of the elements. Panels can be of any type: lining, veneered MDF, etc. This factor is not of particular importance.

The installation principle is almost always the same, and the actions are performed in the following order:

  • Installation starts from the corner of the room. Without finishing filling the first row, you cannot proceed to the second.
  • The elements are first applied to the plane, then adjusted, if necessary, and only after that they are fixed.
  • A panel is initially applied to the places of the lighting fixtures and a place is marked for making a hole. After that, the prepared panel with a hole is attached to the rest.
  • Thus, the ceiling space is completely filled.
  • At the last stage of laying the slats, the surface is checked for defects that can still be corrected, and the finished ceiling is covered with an antiseptic.
If, when installing the lining, the full number of rails does not fit, there is no need to saw the last rail along. It is better to divide the remaining gap into two and release the resulting number of centimeters from two opposite sides of the ceiling. As a result, the gaps are easy to close with a ceiling plinth.

Features of finishing a wooden ceiling

After installing the slatted ceiling, it is recommended to treat the surface with special materials that give it a complete look. It is better to refuse the stain. The layer applied by this material is rarely uniform. Treatment should be done with a spray gun, using first a primer, and only then a dye.

Before starting to cover the ceiling with a primer, a ceiling plinth is nailed along the entire perimeter of the room. The spray paint is directed perpendicular to the surface and applied slowly in thin layers. After the coating has completely dried, the power supply and lighting devices are connected.

At this stage, the installation is considered complete. Detailed instructions will help even an inexperienced master to do all the necessary work on their own. And knowing how to make a wooden ceiling with your own hands, you can not only create a spectacular interior in your home, but also save a lot on it.

There are certain things that speak of high status or create comfort. One of the building materials that can boast of such qualities is wood. A wooden ceiling with your own hands is not only an opportunity to create a unique interior, but also a chance to improve skills in decoration. There are some nuances in the installation, as well as positive and negative sides that should be weighed before proceeding with the installation work.

Basic nuances

The ceiling should create a sense of lightness, and not clutter up the space. This effect can be achieved by the correct selection of color, texture, and shape. Wood is a very flexible material in processing, it can be given any shape that the master wishes. These solutions have many advantages:

  1. The natural base is always highly ecological. You don't have to worry about allergic reactions or bad odors. With the right approach, you can use water-based dyes.
  2. The durability of wood is difficult to overestimate. If you provide good care and stick to hard rocks, ceilings will last so long that they can get bored.
  3. Compatible with any interior. This type of material is suitable for both antique and modern style.
  4. Excellent insulating properties. This applies to both sound and heat loss. It was wood that was the main material for construction in ancient times, because people were well aware of such positive qualities.
  5. Creation of a unique solution. A ceiling project can be ordered from an experienced carpenter.

There are some dangers to consider:

  • Favorite pests. If this is a solution made from pure wood, and not from slabs, then it is imperative to ensure good treatment with antiseptic compounds.
  • The need for proper storage. If the wood was stored incorrectly, this can lead to the fact that the finished structure will begin to crack and lose its appearance.
  • Flammable. It is important to think carefully about this point in order to avoid accidents later.
  • Relatively high cost.

Types of wood ceilings

It will be difficult to list all possible solutions that exist within one article. There are several basic ones, but this does not mean that fantasy should be limited to any framework.

In this case, the usual inexpensive building material is used. It is given the appearance at the request of the customer. In some cases, the surface is fired with a gas burner, sanded and varnished.

From a chopped log. It is more correct to say from the cut. The rounded parts are taken as the basis, which are fixed to the base with the flat side. In this case, only the removal of the bark and grinding is carried out from the processing, after which the elements are covered with a stain or varnish.

From the lining. At its core, this is the same edged board, but well sanded. It also has grooves that provide simplicity and ease of connection with each other.

From euro lining. Equivalent to the previous solution, but the finishing is much better. In addition, the wood has already been given a certain shade. Also on the seamy side, a special recess is made, which helps to ventilate the entire structure. The dimensions are exactly as stated. There is no need to apply additional impregnations.

Caisson. The word comes from French. Translated, it means "box". This solution was often used in ancient times. It was rather a forced constructive than decorative. Such a finish was obtained due to the crossing of the beams. Nowadays, this type of ceiling has received a new birth.

From the block house. If you combine chopped logs and lining technology, then you just get a block house. On the front side, it has a convex semicircular structure that resembles a rounded log. The slats are provided with grooves and spikes that facilitate installation. After the completion of all the work, a surface is obtained that resembles an old kind hut from a log house.

From plywood. In this case, the ceilings are quite even, but further painting and varnishing will be mandatory, because without such a finish, the appearance will not turn out to be attractive enough.

Made of MDF panels. The material is very similar to a wooden lining, but the structure is applied to the front panel, as well as a special film that eliminates the possibility of mechanical damage.

From decorative panels. In this case, an individual project is drawn up. Next, panels of the required shape are made. This type of finish is one of the most expensive. In some cases, an array is used in which patterns are cut.

These are wooden cornices of small width. Unique patterns are made on them. They can be arranged in regular geometric shapes to create a solid appearance.

In fact, veneer is applied to a special base. After gluing such material, the impression of a monolithic ceiling is created, which is trimmed with expensive material. In addition, this view will be relevant if the ceiling surface is made in the form of an arch. The thin layer bends easily and takes the shape of the structure.

In other implementation methods, the plane itself can be made of any material, for example, from drywall, but with wooden beams. In this case, it turns out to reduce costs and get the desired result.

Natural wood requires that the applied varnish or other coating be replaced at least every 3-5 years. Thanks to this, inside it will not rot and dry out.

Where a wooden ceiling is especially appropriate

There are certain interior or exterior solutions where wood ceilings are not just desirable, but necessary.

  • Chalet. This concept is borrowed from the Swiss. In the original sense, it is a small rural house or hunter's hut. This style is characterized by the presence of a large number of beams.
  • Country. When we hear this word, then, most likely, music with a characteristic fiddle sound starts playing in our head. In the interior design, it is expressed in rounded ceiling beams, wooden walls. For such a solution, a block house or a rounded log is usually used.
  • House or sauna from a log house. In this case, you don't need to say much. The building itself requires just such a finish.

To combine a wooden ceiling with other modern materials for wall and floor decoration, it is worth choosing solutions to match or provide some island wood inserts on these surfaces.

Preparatory work

  1. The first step is to calculate how much material will be needed for the surface. To do this, you need to multiply the width of the ceiling by its length and add another 10% to the result. This stock will be necessary when performing trimming or damage to one of the blanks.
  2. When buying, ask the seller to show the conditions under which the storage was carried out, this will avoid problems that may appear after installation.
  3. Installation work should take place at a temperature not lower than + 15 °. Also, the board must lie down for several days indoors in order to acquire the internal humidity of the room.
  4. If required, it is necessary to carry out additional processing with an antiseptic, as well as a fire retardant coating.
  5. All layers of the old finish are completely removed to exclude possible harmful interactions.
  6. If the surface is concrete, then it is covered with a primer to further strengthen it and prevent spilling. It will be useful to apply a layer of antiseptic composition.
  7. Wood is very sensitive to moisture, therefore it is necessary to stretch the waterproofing. It can be a special membrane used in construction. It is fixed to the beams with a stapler, and to the concrete base with dowels and screws or umbrellas. Between the individual layers, an overlap of 10 cm must be provided and the seams must be glued with tape.
  8. It is also important to check the plane of the ceiling at this stage. This can be done using, for example, a water level. A mark is applied to one of the walls at an arbitrary height. Further, it must be transferred to the other planes. To do this, one part of the level is attached to the mark, and the second to the required place, after which it is necessary to wait a little for the liquid inside to level out. From each line you need to measure the distance to the ceiling. Thanks to this, it will be possible to find out the ramps and take them into account when fastening the sheathing bars.
  9. For greater convenience, you can apply markings under the crate in advance.

Manufacturing of lathing

The base for the cladding is best made of wood. The use of the metal version will be relevant if you have the material left after previous work. You will need a board 25 и30 mm thick and 50 mm wide (it will not be a problem if the width is larger, on the contrary, this will provide a better fit and fixation).

  • Installation must be started from the corner where the deviation from the level is smallest. Thus, it will be easier to expose the battens in the horizontal plane.
  • You need to position the lines perpendicular to the joints of the material, which will be attached later.
  • The step between individual elements can be within 30‒50 cm.
  • You can simply fix the boards to a wooden surface with self-tapping screws, to a concrete one - with dowels and self-tapping screws. In this case, in the places where the abutment will be made, it is better to pre-drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the fastening material. This will prevent the bar from splitting and also make it easier to twist.
  • During installation, it is important to use a building level in order to keep the plane.
  • To make the work go faster, you can fix two strips in opposite parts of the ceiling, pull the fishing line between them and it will serve as the required level at which the remaining strips will be set.
  • At this stage, all necessary electrical wiring is also laid. It is better if it is hidden in a metal corrugation, then even if a short circuit or other unpleasant situation occurs, the insulation will not cause a fire.

It is necessary to ensure that the sheathing boards are not infected with a pest. In any case, they should also be treated with an antiseptic, so they will not cause damage to the entire structure.

Installation work

The installation of materials such as wall paneling, block house and MDF panels will be very similar in principle.

The plywood ceiling is laid on the same crate. Before that, it is necessary to cut the sheets into identical squares and then install them. All joints and places where self-tapping screws will enter are closed with wood putty. The next step is to cover the entire surface with stain and varnish. This solution will be very useful when you need to align the plane.

The following video shows how to trim the ceiling with clapboard:

Warming and soundproofing

If there is a desire to provide additional sound and thermal insulation, then for the lathing it will be necessary to select boards of greater thickness, for example, 5 cm. Expanded polystyrene is cut to the size of the space between the lathing slats. The width should be adjusted so that it fits tightly. It is necessary to insert it during the installation of the strips in order to immediately carry out its fixation. Alternatively, you can use mineral wool, but in this case, you will need to close it again with an oilcloth on top so that over time its fibers do not begin to fall out through the cracks.

Coffered ceiling

A project of this type will require a lot of mental effort from you, as well as patience during installation. With regard to the conditions for its installation, there are restrictions on the height of the ceilings - they must be at least 2.5 m. Otherwise, their level will drop so much that it will be uncomfortable inside.

  1. On a sheet of paper, you need to draw a rectangle in proportions that will correspond to the parameters of the ceiling.
  2. Inside the sketch, a drawing of the desired design is made. All patterns, abutment nodes are thought out, and dimensions are also applied.
  3. Surface preparation is carried out in the same way as described above, but the crate is not mounted. If the level difference is too large, then it is additionally necessary to level it with a putty. After complete drying, it must be primed.
  4. The entire plane is pasted over with wallpaper. It is better if they are without a pattern, in one tone, a small structure is allowed. To make them fit well, you need to smooth them with a plastic spatula from the middle to the edges. You can provide a crumple effect if desired. To do this, you do not need to level the canvas too much.
  5. Using a chokline and guided by the drawing, markup the future structure.
  6. False beams are being made. They are a wooden gutter. Typically, wood species such as oak, larch, aspen, etc. are used for this. Blanks for them are selected in accordance with the height of the elements you have chosen. Additionally, they can be aged with a special wood brush, as well as covered with wood stain and varnish.
  7. Further, they are mounted to the ceiling. They can be held, for example, on brackets for metal profiles. They fold over and are attached to the wall. The folded ends are placed inside the false beam. Further fixation is made with self-tapping screws. In this case, the head must be drowned flush and then closed with a wood putty, which will match the color.
  8. First, you can fix all the longitudinal elements and then the lintels.

The whole matter will be simplified if the ceiling already has beams that are part of the structure. Then it is necessary to make jumpers from the same material or using false beams to form squares or rectangles. Next, finishing painting is performed.

Polyurethane skirting boards or fillets can be glued into the inner corners, which will give a special zest to the whole project.

Wooden ceiling in the bath

Usually the ceiling in the bath is made by filing. For it, you can use a wooden lining or block house. The main difference from the conventional design will be the presence of a barrier not in the form of a membrane, but in the form of a dense construction foil. It must also be overlapped. Such a substrate is made so that the resulting condensation can drain off calmly without accumulating and not causing wood to rot. Also, in steam rooms, it is advisable to use stone mineral wool for insulation, it perfectly tolerates high temperatures and does not burn.

This is a very interesting design novelty. Such wallpapers can be either profiled or even. There are several main types:

  • Plates. Solid wood planks are connected to each other in square or rectangular elements, which are then mounted on the surface. Their thickness, as a rule, does not exceed 2 cm. In appearance, such a product resembles a lining, but the slats are much smaller.
  • Heat treated. The manufacturing principle is reminiscent of chipboard production. In this case, the wallpaper acquires greater rigidity and resistance to various influences, including moisture.
  • Cork based. They can be produced both in rolls and in separate tiles. They are a layer of cork that is glued to the paper base. From above, it is covered with a special varnish that protects them from moisture, absorption of odors and other influences. Their thickness can be up to 3 mm.
  • Based on veneer. In this case, the wallpaper can also be up to 3 mm thick. Thin sheets of wood are applied to a paper base and covered with protective varnishes on top. Additionally, engraving can be applied.

The use of such a solution allows you to hide most of the flaws and irregularities that the ceiling may have. If you plan to use tiled material, then it will be attached in the same way as the lining.

For cork strips, as well as products in rolls, it is necessary to prepare the ceiling without installing the battens. Further, the sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Marking and cutting into strips of the required size is performed.
  2. After that, they must be left indoors for at least one day to acclimatize.
  3. When performing work, it is advisable to close all doors so that there are no drafts, as well as prevent direct sunlight.
  4. The surface of the ceiling is covered with an adhesive. It also covers the wallpaper. It is better to do this with a roller.
  5. Further, the segments are applied to the ceiling and pressed well. This will be easier to accomplish with a second rubber roller to remove any remaining air.
  6. If the glue has come out through the seam, then it must be removed as soon as possible with a damp cloth.

Cork boards are also glued to the ceiling. In this case, work must be started from the middle and move to the edges, then the main area will be filled with whole parts, and all the trimming will go to the edges.

Now you know how to make a wooden ceiling or its imitation with your own hands. Each of the methods can be combined with each other. For example, inside the niches of the coffered ceiling, you can glue cork tiles, which will look very attractive. Good luck in your endeavors!

Making a high-quality wooden ceiling in the house or in the country is quite simple. At the same time, labor costs are relatively small, and the final result (if you did everything correctly) is beyond praise.

In this article, we will tell you about the main types of wood ceilings, and also describe the technology of self-lining the ceiling with wood.

A few words about wooden ceilings

Types of wood ceilings

Today, the most popular wooden ceiling design is the so-called wooden planked ceiling. This type of ceiling is called hemmed, because the wooden panels are, as it were, "hemmed", attached from below to the ceiling.

Most often, wooden ceilings are installed in houses with wooden floors, but sometimes a ceiling can be found in a house with concrete floors.

The ceiling is made of wood using several technologies:

  • False ceiling made of lining or euro lining... The most common type of timber ceilings, which, due to the ease of installation, fell in love with many craftsmen.
    For the construction of such a ceiling, a lining board made of various types of natural wood is used: pine, linden, oak, etc.
    The planks are attached to the frame on the ceiling, and are joined according to the "tenon in the groove" principle.
  • Panel suspended ceiling... According to the design principle, the ceiling of the panels is similar, however, not individual boards are attached to the frame, but entire ceiling panels.
    Decorative wooden ceilings, built according to the panel principle, are assembled from wooden panels, externally pasted over with veneer of expensive wood.
  • Embossed hemmed ceiling is made of chopped timber... To do this, a rectangular wooden blank is split lengthwise, after which it is attached to the frame with the smooth side.
    Chipped wood, facing inwardly, creates a unique pattern.

  • - this is a separate type of ceilings assembled from special box-shaped modules - caissons. Coffered ceilings are the most difficult to manufacture, but at the same time, the most effective.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden ceilings

Wood ceilings made using one technology or another have a number of common advantages:

  • With proper care, a wooden ceiling is durable enough. It is non-branded, resistant to external influences, and having mounted the ceiling structure once, you do not have to regularly put it in order.
  • Thanks to the use of natural materials, it is environmentally friendly. As a rule, impregnations for natural wood also do not contain toxic substances.
  • Wooden ceilings have good heat and sound insulation performance.
  • Well, and finally - the wooden ceilings are simply beautiful, with a special, natural beauty. Therefore, before painting the ceiling, think about it - maybe you should just varnish the wood?

Despite such an impressive list of advantages, such ceilings still have a number of disadvantages:

  • A wooden ceiling is subject to destruction under the influence of wood-boring beetles and fungi, and must be treated with special protective compounds.
  • Dry, matured wood on the ceiling burns well, and therefore a wood ceiling is very fire hazardous. Therefore, the wood of such a ceiling must be additionally treated with a fire retardant mixture.

However, knowing about these shortcomings, you can take measures to prevent negative consequences.

Also, the disadvantages of wooden ceilings include their not the lowest cost. But here you have the opportunity to significantly save money by doing the ceiling installation yourself.

Installation of a wooden ceiling

Preparation and frame

If you decide to mount the ceiling from wooden panels or planks, then you need to start by preparing the ceiling itself:

When the ceiling is cleaned and prepared, we proceed to the installation of the frame under the wooden sheathing:

  • We apply markings on the overlap, along which we will further attach the frame. The marking step is determined by the size of the material we will be or veneered panels.

  • The frame is made of beams 30x30 mm. It is advisable to soak the bars of the frame with linseed oil or another compound that protects against waterlogging and swelling before installation.

Note!

The bars of the frame must be fixed in the same plane. If necessary, wood or plastic mounting wedges can be knocked out under the beams to level the frame.

  • We attach the bars to the ceiling with turboprop or dowels with a metal sleeve.
  • After fastening, we again check the plane of the frame, adjusting the fastening screws if necessary.

Wood paneling

The final stage is covering the frame with wooden clapboard or veneered panels.

  • We cut the material for cladding to size.
  • We apply the panel or board to the frame, and with the help of nails for hidden fasteners we fix it on the uneven bars. To keep the panel or lining securely, we hammer the nail into the groove not vertically, but at an angle.
  • In places experiencing special stress, we additionally fix the lining with self-tapping screws. We partially recessed the caps of the screws into the wood, and then mask them.

Note!

The joints between panels or lining must be done with a small degree of freedom - this makes it possible for the ceiling to tolerate thermal deformations without the appearance of blisters and cracks.

The final stage of work on installing a wooden ceiling is its impregnation with a protective compound (again!) And then varnishing.

It is also possible to paint wooden ceilings, but for this the ceiling itself should be made from the cheapest raw materials (anyway, the paint will hide the texture), and the joints between the boards must be carefully putty.

Using the technology given in this article, it will not be difficult for you to make a wooden ceiling in the kitchen, bedroom, living room or hallway. And even if you have not worked with wood before, follow our advice and you will succeed!

Who would not say what, but wood has always been and will be the best type of finishing material for a wooden house. The material is completely environmentally friendly and absolutely harmless to humans, and it is difficult to argue with this, because Mother Nature herself gave it to us. Decorating ceilings with natural wood is deservedly a hallmark of any home, this is the first thing that catches your eye when you go inside. In this article, we will consider in detail all the options for the execution of finishes that exist today, as well as the color design of the ceiling.

The big advantage of wood is its low thermal conductivity. Thanks to this, wooden ceilings always keep warm and give comfort to your home. Being in such a room you will always feel comfortable, and the natural smell of wood will have a beneficial effect on your body.

The modern building materials market can satisfy even the most capricious buyer.

The presented assortment is so wide that sometimes it is impossible to make a choice right away. It takes even more time to think.

In a house made of timber, it is difficult to imagine something other than wood as a material for the ceiling

The style for each room is selected depending on its main functional purpose. For example, in the living room he is alone, but in the bedroom and study he is completely different.

In the past ten years, the white painted ceiling has been very popular in interior design, especially among the younger generation. This is due to the fact that the white color will never go out of fashion, and its unobtrusive appearance allows you to give the room lightness and airiness, which is sometimes so lacking.

In this design, you can perform not only ceilings, but also walls, the space will look visually more voluminous and wider, and you can easily dilute it with decorative elements.

Despite the fact that wooden lining is a relatively inexpensive material, this does not interfere in the least with creating a unique interior design, which is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent to it. To do this, you just need to show a little imagination and the result will not be long in coming.

Having decorated the ceilings in the house with wooden clapboard, you can change their color to any other at any time, if you are slightly fed up with the old one and you want some kind of variety.

The stereotypes that wood should not be used in rooms with high humidity have long been erased. Modern technologies for processing the material and the correct installation of wooden ceilings allow it to be used even in the bathroom.

You don't have to worry about the fact that something might happen to him, scientists and technologists have already done this for you. You just have to choose the right type of wood and the toner you like.

There are plenty of options for finishing the bathroom ceiling and you can always choose the design that suits you.

Wooden ceilings in a private house usually involve the use of two main types of material for this. The most popular finishing panels are:

  • Lining "calm" : a fairly popular material that is used to decorate ceilings. Its long sides are made with a special groove and recess in such a way that when they are connected, a so-called "deepened shelf" is not formed, that is, the surface is completely flat. It looks especially beautiful when the ceiling is decorated with wide clapboard "calm".
  • Lining "Euro" : whiter, more expensive option, but much better. It is made mainly of high quality wood. The main focus is on the absence of knots, tar stains and cracks. It undergoes better processing on four sides on expensive machines. On the back there is a recess for moisture removal and ventilation. The front side has a perfectly flat and smooth surface that does not require additional processing.

What styles is natural wood used in

Wood as a finishing material has been used all over the world for a long time. Reliability, aesthetics and elegant design allows it to be used in various styles of interior decoration.

The main styles are the following:

  • High tech;
  • Country;
  • Modern;
  • Chalet;
  • Eco style;
  • Japanese style.

Hi-tech style

The high-tech style is characterized by a clearly defined geometry of objects, however, despite this, they should not have strict boundaries.

Country style

It is difficult to imagine a country-style room without using it as wood trim, and ceilings are no exception. The material for finishing can be both lining and wooden panels, boards or wooden wallpaper.

A well-chosen color combination of the ceiling and walls, in combination with a fireplace, will give the room a truly homely feel

Modern style

The main task of this style is to combine together various types of material, natural and artificial. The use of wood is a fundamental component of interior design, it can be used on the floor, as well as on the ceiling and walls. The main thing is that it does not violate the overall harmony of the interior.

The modern kitchen will always have its relevance

It will also always be appropriate to use various wooden structures on the ceiling, which will harmoniously complement the interior.

Chalet style

This style migrated to Russia from distant Switzerland and France. It would seem that the usual simplicity of the design of wooden houses should have gone unnoticed, but as it turned out this was not at all the case. The grandeur and beauty of the "chalet" style can charm any connoisseur of beauty.

The predominant tones for this style are brown, burgundy, dark green and red. It is necessary to use brighter colors with special care so as not to disturb the general atmosphere of the interior, as the chalet style loves natural tones.

Eco style

Eco is a derivative of the word ecology. From here it is not difficult to understand that the eco style provides only environmentally friendly material, created by nature itself, as a finish.

However, the use of natural materials is not one of the most important conditions for this style, it is very important to preserve their original appearance and appearance. The texture of the wood should be clearly visible, and its color palette should be as close to natural as possible.

Eco-style country house interior design

Unfortunately, it is impossible to ensure that harmful substances do not participate in wood processing and at the same time their cost does not increase. Wood treated with environmentally friendly impregnations will cost a lot, but believe me it's worth it, in return you will get crystal clear air and a feeling of complete privacy with nature in your house.

The use of other natural materials in decoration is also encouraged, such as.

Floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, a wall lined with decorative bricks, a beautiful sofa with a coffee table are the perfect combination to create a truly cozy atmosphere in the house.

Eco design loves space and good lighting. It is problematic to make the most of all the possibilities of this style in an apartment; a large country house with high ceilings and spacious rooms is perfect for these purposes. Only here you can truly give free rein to your imagination.

Wooden ceilings will look good not only in the house, but also in other outbuildings. One style will avoid sharp boundaries between different zones.

An open terrace of a country house decorated in the same style together with the house will be an excellent complement to the modern eco-style design.

Japanese style

Quite exotic and new style for the Russian latitudes. Recently, however, it is gaining more and more popularity. The main materials used for finishing are stone and wood. Particular attention is paid to the design of ceilings, mainly they are made of boards or wooden panels, painted in dark colors.

Remember that the Japanese style does not quite like experimentation, it is characterized by minimalism and restraint.

It is allowed to dilute the interior only with decor elements related to the style.

Japanese style loves restraint. It has straight lines and simple shapes.

Regardless of which style you choose for your interior, it is important to remember one thing that the ceilings in the house play a special, if not the main role in it.

We invite you to consider different options for the execution of wooden ceilings.

Let this information serve as food for your thought. And from our side, we wish you to make the right choice.

Modern building materials and technologies allow for various types of ceilings. Design approaches and individual preferences help to choose a coating from plasterboard, wallpaper, tension or suspended structures. Recently, wood ceilings have become very popular. This material allows you to make the room more comfortable.

Advantages and disadvantages

The return to the old way of finishing ceilings can be explained by the following advantages:

  • the structure of the tree is able to retain heat for a long time;
  • naturalness;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • under the ceiling made of wood, you do not need to prepare the surface for finishing;
  • under it you can lay cables and hide the wiring;
  • such a ceiling is not afraid of shrinkage of a wooden house;
  • wet cleaning is more accessible;
  • improves sound insulation;
  • wood brings coziness and comfort to any interior;
  • the ability to solve any interesting ideas.

And the main disadvantage of a wooden ceiling is the danger of damage by insects and fungi. But this disadvantage can be avoided by choosing the right wood and formulations for its processing. Another negative point is the fire hazard.

Wood is a very flammable material, so you cannot do without proper processing.

High-quality material for finishing the ceiling will not be cheap. Installation services will also be expensive, because it is better to hire real professionals so that the structure will last a long time and reliably.

Kinds

The ceiling made of wood is divided into hemmed and suspended. The latter option is more often used, since it is easier to install (due to the fact that it is not necessary to pre-level the surface). For hemming, it should be perfectly flat.

You can make a wooden ceiling from any type of material; there are also panels that imitate the pattern of natural wood. They are made from MDF.

Sewn wooden ceilings

There is a certain way of laying the panels, which involves their installation from the bottom of the wooden structure, that is, they are "hemmed" to it. Designs may vary depending on material.

This could be:

  1. Chipped timber. Covering with such a decor element will create a relief on the ceiling. Its unique pattern is determined by chips on the uneven bars. They are blanks, split in half lengthwise, which are attached with the smooth side to the frame.
  2. Panels. In terms of design, such a ceiling made of wood resembles clapboarding, with the difference that small pieces of expensive and rare species are attached to a large shield, which is fixed to the surface.
  3. Caisson option. This type of decorative ceiling decoration stands apart from everyone else, because it is assembled from special box-shaped modules. Such a decorative wooden ceiling looks spectacular, but it is very difficult to perform and requires a lot of labor and material costs. Not everyone can afford this solution, so it is worth considering the options for imitating a tree, which are presented in a wide range.
  4. Euro or just lining. These are the most popular ceilings. All thanks to the ease of installation. Such a structure can be made of any kind of wood: pine, oak, linden, etc.

Design solutions

The interior looks very impressive, in which the ceiling is made of "antique" wood.

Its combination with walls and floors evokes a medieval feel. Such premises are often used for restaurants and hotels. All because of wood, which gives unlimited possibilities for execution, as it is a very pliable and flexible material. An artificial one can give a unique effect. It can be made in several ways - using parquet or edged boards.

A decorative wooden ceiling is not only beautiful, but also very expensive. Not everyone can afford this luxury. But this does not mean that a simple living room in an apartment cannot be finished with such material. It is not necessary to use unique wood in the interior. You can get by with a simple clapboard, which, with proper installation, will look very impressive.

Ceiling and walls

Wood can be harmoniously combined with walls, using natural materials for finishing the latter (ideally also wood).

The color of the walls will give contrast to the interior. You can use a combined option, when one part is made to match the ceiling, and the other is in contrast. Sometimes plasterboarding or plastering works well.

Natural wood goes well with stone. It can be accentuated in a small part of the wall. Natural stone can be successfully replaced with artificial one.

Wooden houses with ceilings in the same material are becoming classics. In this case, the combination of walls with it will not be superfluous. It is worth thinking about the purpose of the room in which the wooden ceiling structure will be installed. If this is a bathroom, then you can pick up decorative tiles on the walls. Its color scheme should match the ceiling.

If the high-tech style is applied in the interior, then wood can be combined with metal.

If natural material cannot be used for any reason, then you should pay attention to the wood-like ceiling. It is finished with other materials, but has an original drawing.

Installation of a wooden frame

Before installing wood coverings, you need to prepare the surface:

  • the remains of the finish must be carefully removed;
  • over the floor, an additional layer of waterproofing is needed, because wood is a material that is highly exposed to moisture.
  • with a wood base, treatment with anti-fire compounds is needed;
  • the overlap is marked for smooth installation of the structure. The marking step will depend on the upholstery material;
  • the frame is best made from beams 30X30mm. They should be treated with special compounds that will give the material resistance to moisture and swelling;
  • you need to fasten the bars with special fasteners in the form of turboprop or dowels;
  • after installing the frame, its flatness should be checked.

Next comes the wood sheathing, the material of which is cut to size. The panels are fixed on the bars with nails for concealed installation, while for reliability, the nail should be driven in at a slight angle.

The panels should not fit very tightly to each other, as they need space for deformation during operation and exposure to temperature changes. Where additional load is possible, it is better to secure the structure with additional self-tapping screws.

The last step will be impregnation with a protective compound and varnishing. With the subsequent coloring, there is no need to carry out additional procedures, since the coloring composition will hide all the shortcomings.

Stretch ceiling

You can create a fashionable interior and at the same time spend less on materials and work by arranging a stretch ceiling under a tree. Such a solution is relevant for many styles, from Provence to Art Nouveau. It will successfully fit into any design project and will look great in wooden houses.

Thanks to modern technology, any pattern can be applied. The base for it can be glossy, satin or fabric. This is the easiest way to arrange wood on the ceiling. Many designers recommend duplicating the floor and moving the same pattern up. It looks very impressive.

A ceiling made of wood is considered a classic; any room will benefit from this solution.

The advantage of this material is that for all its naturalness and originality, the tree looks noble.

Rack ceiling

Many people confuse two concepts: a ceiling made of wood and a slatted ceiling under a tree. The second option is just an imitation, it is obtained by applying a pattern on a different basis, resembling a cut of a bar or board.

The first consists of natural material and is more acceptable in an aesthetic sense. A person perceives a wooden drawing positively, knowing in advance about its authenticity.

But do not immediately sweep aside the imitation option. After all, modern technologies make it possible to achieve such an effect that one glance will not be enough to realize a fake. This can save you a significant amount of money.

Installing a slatted ceiling

To install such a ceiling, you need to prepare the necessary tools:

  • puncher (designed for stone walls);
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw, hand saw or jigsaw;
  • mounting level;
  • and measurements.

The installation of the slats is not very different from the installation of other wooden surfaces.

The slats also need to be fixed to the bars with nails or screws. In damp rooms, the surface should be additionally waterproofed to prevent mold and high humidity inside the house.

A very important point in the choice of rails will be the percentage of their moisture. It should not exceed 12%. Otherwise, the slats may warp during operation.

So we found out what a wooden ceiling is. Then the choice is yours!
