Kitchen worktop with transition to the window sill. Kitchen worktop passing into the window sill

Most people don't use window sills at all. At most, indoor plants, figurines, souvenirs, stacks of newspapers or magazines can be placed on them. However, the area of the windowsills can be used more efficiently. Using a window sill correctly in the kitchen can save you some precious floor space. This solution is especially important for a kitchen with a small area.

There are several ideas to help you turn a regular kitchen window sill into a multi-functional, usable space.

Additional work surface on the windowsill

The most common way to use a window sill in the kitchen is to organize an additional workplace. To do this, you just need to install an additional tabletop over the entire length of the window sill. If you try a little, then on the windowsill, in addition to the countertop, you can even install a sink. Granite or marble are the best materials for making countertops. These materials are able to perfectly withstand high humidity and significant temperature changes. A tabletop made of natural stone will not change its shape over time, will not dry out or swell. The stone countertop is resistant to mechanical damage. In addition, such a worktop has a beautiful appearance, which will make the interior of the kitchen more sophisticated.

Bar counter on the windowsill

For those who have long dreamed of their own bar counter in the kitchen, but due to the size of the room, it was not possible to install this element of the interior, a window sill may be the best solution. It is necessary to place a tabletop on the window sill and place several bar stools near the window sill counter. Thus, an additional resting place will appear in the house, where in the morning you can enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee, or spend a romantic evening with a glass of wine.

Window sill as a dining table

The window sill area can be used not only as a bar counter, but also as a small dining table. Of course, a noisy company of relatives, friends and relatives will not be able to gather at such a table, but there will be enough space for one or two people. For a table, you need a tabletop that will protrude slightly beyond the wall. This is necessary so that while sitting at the table, your legs do not rest against the wall.

Another original option for organizing a table from a window sill is a dining table top, which smoothly goes into the table top on the windowsill. This window sill design option will increase the number of seats at the table.

Garden-vegetable garden on the windowsill

Recently, more and more often on the windowsills of apartments you can see not ornamental plants, but flower pots in which various spices and edible plants grow. Why spend money and free time buying greens, if you can grow greens on your own? Indeed, in order to grow edible plants, you only need a few flower pots with soil, plant seeds, regular watering, and after a short period of time you can enjoy the results of the work done.

Windowsill-like storage system

In a small kitchen, the same problem always arises, a lack of space to store all the necessary things. Indeed, in the kitchen you need to place not only a large number of dishes, various household appliances, but also all the necessary food products. Additional storage space can be equipped under the windowsill. If, of course, there is no heating battery, then an additional cabinet can be installed under the windowsill, the height of which is determined by the height of the window sill. It is better if a similar cabinet is made in the same color scheme and the same stylistic direction with the kitchen set. You can also place a washing machine or dishwasher under the windowsill.

Window bench

For spacious kitchens, the best option for decorating a window sill is in the form of a bench. In order to make a bench, it is necessary to take into account the height of the window sill. The suitable height for the bench is approximately 45cm. To keep the bench stable enough, use a wooden seat. To make your stay on the bench safe, grates should be installed on the windows, which will emphasize the stylistic design of the kitchen.

There are a huge number of options for decorating a window sill in the kitchen, and by implementing any of the above ideas, you can make the room interesting and original.

Ideas for using a windowsill in the kitchen

The kitchen window sill can be used in different ways: arrange a small winter garden or vegetable garden on it, a small cozy corner with a soft cover where you can sit, leave an empty space so that you can use it as needed (put a vase with a bouquet, install a Christmas tree, etc. so on), decorate as a decorative detail of the interior (place textile dolls, ceramics, etc.). But you can install a countertop and turn the window sill into a work surface or dining table.

Tabletop on the windowsill, design

There is an opinion that this option is forced, as a rule, due to the small size of the kitchen. It's not like that at all. A window sill tabletop can be mounted for several reasons:

  • if the hostess needs the kitchen work surface to be well lit and always with natural light;
  • in a spacious kitchen, when the window sill is combined with the island or for a purpose;
  • to visually balance the kitchen space and prevent the arrangement of all furniture in one side;
  • when certain goals are achieved in the design of the kitchen, when all the furniture is located in a circle;
  • in a small kitchen, where there is no room for a full dining table and work surface.

Usually the countertop is mounted if the window opening is deep enough, at least 40 cm.

Then, by adding a small protruding part, you can get a full-fledged table, which will have the following design:

  • can stand on legs;
  • fold;
  • fit on a pedestal;
  • mounted on brackets;
  • represent one surface with all kitchen furniture;
  • it can be mounted;
  • have one surface with a bar;
  • be perpendicular to the window or go parallel to it;
  • be any, even the most bizarre shape.

Advantages and disadvantages of installing such a table continuation

The main plus of the countertop built into the window sill is that in this case the kitchen will not seem like a closed space. There are more possibilities for design solutions: the window sill, smoothly turning into the tabletop, fits perfectly into the interiors of many styles, from classic to ultra-modern. And the hostess gets the opportunity, while cooking, not to rest her gaze on the wall, but to look at the landscape outside the window. This arrangement of the working surface makes it possible not to turn on the electric lighting in the daytime.

The disadvantages are that it is not so easy to dismantle the stone surface of the countertop if necessary, such a table cannot be moved to another place. It is better to choose curtains for windows from water-repellent material.

How to install: embed correctly and secured with your own hands

Worktops made from different materials are installed in different ways.

Large tiles visually reduce the size of the countertop-window sill.

Installing a countertop decorated with ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware:

  • first you need to think about what dimensions of the countertop are needed: the countertop must be deep enough, but not excessively, otherwise it will be inconvenient to get objects near the window itself, if necessary, to wipe the table and open the sashes;
  • it is necessary to make a base for the table top: it can lean on the pedestals or on the legs; if there is no skill in making furniture, it is better to order cabinets in the workshop;
  • install the pedestals, aligning them along the plane with the window sill and vertically;
  • then make a base for the countertop: it can be a piece of moisture-resistant plywood of sufficient thickness; the base of the corresponding shape is cut out according to the drawing of the countertop;
  • if there are batteries under the windowsill, then slots are made in the worktop blank;
  • the finished countertop must be fixed on the windowsill;
  • further create or porcelain stoneware; tile glue is taken thicker than for wall cladding;
  • the glue is evenly distributed over the surface of the base, for this you can use a regular float, then the tiles are laid so that the gaps remain minimal;
  • a grill is installed on the hole above the radiator;
  • the tile is cleaned, the seams are rubbed;
  • a ceramic corner or molding is installed on the ends of the countertop;
  • ceramic or glued to walls and window openings.

Stone countertop is durable and durable

Installation of stone countertops:

  • the plate is ordered according to the finished drawing;
  • the wider the support, the better; it must be installed in such a way that the tabletop fits snugly against it;
  • if necessary, the stone can be sawed and sharpened with a diamond tool;
  • the dimensions are measured so that the joints of the plates are the least noticeable; during installation, they are filled with a sealant, for this, the edges of both plates are smeared with a sealant mixed with a hardener in proportions 1: 2, the plates move quickly, because such a composition hardens within two minutes; after hardening, the seam is polished so that it becomes practically invisible;
  • cabinets, which will serve as a support, are leveled and fixed using clamps and screws, installed;
  • cement is applied to the window sill, the countertop is laid into it, it is checked how tightly it fits both on the window sill and on the cabinets.

Grout is not as resistant to temperature and mechanical stress as tiles.

Pitfalls to face if combined in the kitchen

When installing the countertop, you need to take into account several nuances.

The table top is attached under the window frame. Condensation formed on the window can flow down, and the end, which is attached to the windowsill, will constantly get wet. The countertop must be made of a waterproof material such as glass or stone, or the outer end must be waterproofed. An additional ventilation valve can be installed on plastic windows; firms engaged in the installation of double-glazed windows have this option.

Once the table top is in place, it will be much more difficult to open the window. Therefore, the window sashes are fixed in the "airing" position so as not to remove the dishes from the table every time when you need to open the frame.

The window sill may not have the desired height: be higher or lower. The problem is solved easier if the window sill is higher: then you can combine it with the bar counter by placing chairs of the required height to it. If the window sill is low, a multi-level table can be built on its base.

Convection

To ensure the flow from the radiator, it is necessary to make a hole in the worktop.

Almost always, heating devices are installed under the windowsill. To allow warm air to circulate freely, large enough holes are made in the countertop. The easiest way to do this is in countertops made of any stone or wood. Alternatively, you can close the opening.

If possible, move the battery to a different location.

The openings in the countertop for air exchange must be at least 10 cm in diameter.

Sustainability

The most stable structure rests on furniture cabinets. The stability of the structure is also necessary for the safe washing of the window when you have to get up on the countertop, so the calculation should be based on the average weight of a person. If the tabletop rests on legs, then it is better to provide for the presence of an additional one.

Splash proof

When using a countertop as a work surface during cooking, splashes cannot be avoided. To protect the window from splashing, curtains made of water-repellent material or special structures made of plastic like blinds are used, which are retractable if there is work to be done, in which the window may be splashed.

Heat resistance

Countertops made of any type of stone, concrete, ceramics and porcelain stoneware can withstand temperatures up to 150 degrees, and there are no marks left on them. Heat resistant also withstands high temperatures. The most defenseless against high temperatures are wooden countertops. Even coated with special varnishes, they still remain susceptible to high temperatures, this must be taken into account when using such countertops and use various stands.

Materials for manufacturing may be different, but only metal are used for high temperatures.

How to choose a surface material: artificial, wood, chipboard, tile

The same requirements are imposed on the countertop on the windowsill as to the usual one:

  • it must not release hazardous substances;
  • must be moisture resistant;
  • dirt should not penetrate the pores;
  • be durable against all kinds of damage;
  • be heat resistant;
  • easy to clean.

You can also combine materials based on your workspaces to create new aesthetics and maximize the benefits of each worktop material.

There are several types of materials from which such a tabletop can be made:

  • PVC: this is not the best material in this case, but it can be used if the countertop is not intended for cooking, but is used only as a dining table or a small bar counter;
  • Particleboard and MDF: such plates are used only laminated, or they are taken as a basis for stainless steel countertops and tiles;
  • (corian): it is a lightweight, comfortable material that allows you to cut a tabletop of any configuration;
  • marble: such material looks good, is hygienic, but it has a lot of weight, so it is often necessary to limit the size of such a countertop;
  • Repair, restoration, maintenance of the table top passing into the window

    • if there is a joint seam on the countertop, it must be rubbed regularly so that microorganisms do not settle on it;
    • it is enough to wipe the smooth surface with a damp cloth, and the embossed and textured ones need to be cleaned with a brush;
    • for stubborn dirt, you can use detergents, having previously tested them on an inconspicuous part of the worktop.

    Restoration and renovation:

    • when restoring a wooden countertop, it is covered with liquid plastic, thus not only removing chips and scratches, but also increasing water resistance;
    • minor scratches and stains on the artificial stone countertop can be removed using polyester liquids;
    • if the integrity of the tabletop is broken, then it can be restored by covering the crack with polyester resin and then sanding it after the resin has completely hardened.

    How to install a window sill yourself, video instruction:

    A tabletop-window sill is an interesting option to build in and save space, for many styles in the interior: this is minimalism, and the Scandinavian style, and the style of a chalet. This worktop looks great in a small white kitchen. v Khrushchev, where there are few squares.

Today, redesigning the kitchen in an apartment in order to increase its functionality is a popular trend. Many owners are looking for opportunities, interesting ideas and options on how to use the maximum square meters of usable area in order to conveniently arrange interior elements, furniture, and appliances.

This is especially true for small apartments, where every centimeter of space is valuable. But even for spacious housing, the idea of rationalization is very relevant.

One of the most successful ideas for using the usable area is the window sill countertop in the kitchen, i.e. the use of free space under the window and at the window level itself. This idea seems interesting and very practical, although it will require good planning skills and sufficient financial resources to implement it.

A window sill as a countertop is a great option for small kitchens

In an ordinary apartment in the kitchen, the window sill performs an auxiliary function, in rare cases it serves to accommodate small household appliances, but more often indoor plants or decor items. A heating radiator is located under the windowsill - it is he who becomes a real stumbling block for many rationalizers of living space.

How to properly use the space under the windowsill depends on the idea of the performer, the needs of the owners of the kitchen, and on the area, geometry and other features of the room.

Tabletop-sill as a working area

Most often, a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen is planned as an extension of the working area and a continuation of the usual countertop, on which food is cut during cooking, a hob is installed and a sink is mounted.

For small kitchens, this solution becomes the best way to increase the usable space and make work more convenient and comfortable. For this, the countertop sill is often made, as it were, turning into an ordinary countertop by using a common material for its manufacture.

The right amount of light will fall on the working area, and will also help you periodically distract from work

But for the implementation of this idea, a number of conditions must be met. The surface in the working area should be equal in height to the window sill, otherwise you will either have to buy new furniture or remove the old window sill and install a completely new base for the table top in its place.

If it is planned to place floor boxes under the windowsill for storing utensils, dishes and other things, then you will have to think about where to put the heating radiator and how to solve the problem of heating the room.

How can you use the area near the window?

When expanding the working space, a worktop with a window sill can be not just a flat cutting surface, but a full-fledged continuation of the functional part of the kitchen. If necessary, you can install a sink in it, which will allow the hostess to wash the dishes with great pleasure, admiring the view from the window. The advantage of this solution is also better natural lighting of the working area.

But in this case, you need to take care of an additional light source above the sink or cutting surface at night. After all, washing dishes in the evening or preparing dinner, hiding the light of a single lamp on the ceiling with your back, is quite inconvenient.

A good solution would be to install spotlights (spots) above the windowsill in the window opening, or several lamps on clothespins, which can be freely moved and removed if necessary.

As for the gas or electric hob, it is extremely rarely mounted directly under the window, because it is technically difficult and requires coordination with utilities.

Therefore, it is better to leave the stove in the same place, and use the new meters of usable area near the window for washing, a cutting surface or placing dishes, a microwave oven and other functional items on it.

It is better to place the place for eating away from the stove and sink.

What to do with the battery under the windowsill?

Moving plumbing units is troublesome and quite costly, so many owners agree that it is better to completely remove the battery from under the window, and as an alternative to traditional heating of the room, install a warm floor.

This is much easier to do, especially if you have been planning to redecorate your kitchen floors for a long time. By removing the radiators under the window, you can freely place a narrow cabinet or cabinet in the resulting small niche, the top of which will serve as a countertop defense.

But in a number of cases, a newly-made countertop from a window sill does not require such serious redevelopments involving engineering systems. If the kitchen is spacious enough, then all functional pieces of furniture can be placed against the far (perpendicular to the window) wall, and a battery or a small air heater can be left under the countertop.

The batteries can be hidden under the windowsill if you make it quite wide

Manufacturing methods

There are several ways how to install the countertop in place of the former window sill so that it goes into the working area. It all depends on the area of the working area, the geometry of the relative position of the window sill and furniture and other factors.

Most often, for the production of a common tabletop, two pieces of flat material are taken, which are installed on supports perpendicularly at right angles to each other. This is the most convenient and quickest option for expanding the countertop under the window.

The material for the manufacture of piecework tabletops can be:

  • natural stone (marble, granite);
  • fake diamond;
  • solid wood;
  • durable chipboard with a thickness of at least 3 cm.

The latter option is the most economical, but requires more careful surface finishing. A practical and affordable choice is corduroy, which can imitate various natural textures with high accuracy.

Natural and artificial stone does not require any finishing, but wood needs to be treated with waterproof varnish, because constant contact of the countertop with moisture is expected.

An example of a solid sheet of countertop in the kitchen

For more designer interiors with a kitchen window sill turning into a worktop, a solid sheet of flat material is often used, which is cut in such a way that, after installation, the worktop looks monolithic - without seams.

This option is rational for a small kitchen, where the window is located close to the work area. In this case, you can make not a right angle, but a rounded or wavy one. It looks pretty, especially if the surface of the countertop has a glossy sheen and a bright paint finish.

We use it as a dining area

This is a less common design decision when using space near the window. But, nevertheless, a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen as an impromptu dining table or bar counter is an excellent option for rationalizing the room.

It is suitable for both small and spacious kitchens, and can act as an independent design move. If you choose the right material, color, and combination with other pieces of furniture, then the countertop window sill in the dining area will look very stylish and unusual.

The dining area near the window is suitable for families with a small number of people

This kitchen design with a countertop sill has several advantages over using a conventional dining table:

  • saves space in the kitchen, allowing you to move freely;
  • provides additional aesthetic pleasure during meals, when you can admire the view outside the window during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The window sill in the dining area, turning into the tabletop, can be made in two versions: deaf (closed) - when users sit facing the window, and open, when the tabletop is located perpendicular to the window sill in the form of an island element.

Depending on the wishes of the owners, any option can be used, each of which has its own advantages.

Island top

The first method of positioning the countertop for the dining area by the window is convenient for a small family of two or three people, and allows you to save free space to the maximum. An insulated tabletop that merges into a window sill allows chairs to be placed on either side to accommodate more guests.

The open version of the countertop near the window can be used as an impromptu bar counter, if you place a compact box under it, special shelves for storing bottles with collection wine or a mini-bar.

Conclusion

As you can see, the idea of making a countertop out of the window sill in most versions is very successful, allowing not only to free up additional space for work or eating, but also to make the kitchen design more modern and stylish.

Coziness and comfort play a special role in the house. Often, serious efforts must be made to ensure suitable conditions, especially if the apartment is small in size, but you want to make it extremely functional. The kitchen is an important place both in a huge cottage and in a small "Khrushchev" building. It includes a work area, an area for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a place for many household appliances in the house. To accommodate all of this, you need additional space. You can get it with a tabletop instead of a window sill.

Pros and cons of a window sill-countertop

The main advantage is the rational use of free space. Additional benefits include:

  • The ability to install a sink opposite the window, allowing you to free up its space for placing household appliances and other tasks.
  • Daylight illumination of the working area, which makes it possible to save on electrical energy and has a positive effect on vision.
  • Almost all houses have batteries under the windowsill. The use of a countertop window sill allows you to neatly hide them.

note! The solution under consideration has no disadvantages. With the right choice of material, thoughtful design of the kitchen and reliable installation, the window sill-countertop will delight you for many years.

Possible design solutions

The most popular option is a straight table along the window. To make the tabletop comfortable, aesthetically attractive and original, specialists improve the shape and think over practicality and functionality to the smallest detail. We offer some interesting solutions:

  • Model equipped with a folding table. A good solution for small kitchens. When assembled, such a tabletop-window sill does not interfere with movement. Moreover, it can be easily turned into a large table for family gatherings and receiving guests within a few minutes.
  • A countertop sill that flows smoothly into the bar counter. This option is relevant for spacious rooms. A suitable furniture set will provide an opportunity to form a comfortable, well-lit area for cooking and eating.
  • Direct model. For kitchens with a mini prefix.

Useful recommendation! To find the best idea, taking into account the available free space and the characteristics of the chosen interior style, study the photographs of the original designer countertops-window sills in advance. This will save time.

Countertop materials

First you need to choose a material. The presented options have an individual set of advantages and disadvantages. Please note that the future design of the kitchen depends on the material.

Plastic

Such a tabletop sill is made of a laminated chipboard or a solid plastic layer, which affects the cost and durability of the product.

Dignity:

  • Affordable price .
  • A wide range of colors and textures.
  • Ease of maintenance.

disadvantages:

  • susceptibility to sudden temperature jumps;
  • susceptibility to scratching.

Note! These disadvantages often do not appear when buying a quality product from a trusted manufacturer. At the same time, the cost of such a plastic window sill-countertop will be much higher.

Wood

Due to the operational features, wooden countertops are installed exclusively for the implementation of unique design ideas, providing for the need to comply with the style of the kitchen.

Dignity:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • beauty and solidity of appearance;
  • depending on the type of wood, the possibility of choosing the option that is optimal in terms of technical characteristics.

disadvantages:

  • susceptibility to moisture, temperature fluctuations and ease of ignition;
  • sensitivity to mechanical damage;
  • the need for regular processing to maintain performance and daily maintenance for an attractive appearance.

Metal

Due to the balanced technical characteristics, steel table-tops-sills are gaining popularity among buyers.

Advantages:

  • not afraid of temperature jumps and exposure to moisture;
  • high resistance to mechanical stress;
  • ease of care;
  • attractive look.

disadvantages:

  • In case of improper care, scratches appear and the appearance is lost;
  • Over time, rust damage is possible.

Need to know! In most cases, metal is used in a complex with a base made of another material, which minimizes noise during the operation of the tabletop.

Stone

Dignity:

  • stability and durability;
  • not afraid of temperature jumps, mechanical stress and moisture;
  • not flammable.

disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • great weight.

Useful recommendation! The above types of window sills, countertops, with individual combinations of pros and cons, fully comply with sanitary standards. To further verify this, ask the manufacturer or seller for quality certificates.

How to choose the right size?

Measurements should be made taking into account the characteristics of the lower sections, as well as possible accessories for the window sill-table top (for example, sinks, hob, etc.).

Useful recommendation! Be careful and precise in determining the required characteristics. Even a slight deviation will cause damage to the material or lead to additional unnecessary costs.

To choose the right size for the countertop, you need to know:

  • The width and length of the countertop sill.
  • The width and length of the cutout.
  • The exact location of the cutout for the hob or sink.
  • Indicators of the indentation from the leading edge of the cutout.

Installation

Most often, you can handle the installation of a tabletop yourself and quickly enough.

Use the services of professionals if

  • Installation is included in the price of the countertop window sill.
  • The product is made of fragile materials.
  • Do not have the appropriate skills or tool.

How to make the installation yourself?

Installing a countertop window sill should not cause serious difficulties. The process is similar to installing a regular countertop and window sill. But it is worth knowing some features.

General rules:

  • Consider allowing the heat from the battery to circulate to the window without any problems. Otherwise, it will fog up. As a result, excess moisture will begin to accumulate in the room, which can potentially cause the onset and spread of mold.
  • Install before finishing the finishing work. When installing a window sill-table top without replacing the window, certain difficulties are possible.
  • The window sill, in accordance with the existing regulations, should be located 20 cm below the edge of the window cut-out.

Using the example of a chipboard window sill, we will further consider the algorithm and procedure for the production and installation of the product on our own.

Materials and tools

  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • plywood sheet.

Having assembled an arsenal of the above elements:

  • Install the kitchen cabinets and take control measurements of the window sill-countertop.
  • Prepare the base. To do this, take a sheet of plywood. It must have a thickness of 12 mm or more. We recommend choosing a moisture resistant material. Using an electric jigsaw, cut out the base of the window sill-table top in accordance with the established characteristics.
  • Install the base on the pedestals, and then securely fasten with self-tapping screws. Select the appropriate option for solving the task at hand among the fasteners on the market.
  • Attach the base to the windowsill with brackets.

Note again! Do not forget to prepare a niche for warm air circulation in case there is a battery under the worktop. This will eliminate the fogging of the windows. The hole made should be hidden with a decorative grill or other accessory.

Finishing cladding

An excellent solution would be ceramic tiles. Use medium sized models as it is difficult to achieve a flat surface with small starting materials due to the difficulty of laying. In turn, the large size visually reduces the space. The best option is to cover the countertop with tiles used to decorate the kitchen.

Brief instruction:

  • Prepare the required amount of glue according to the manufacturer's recommendations on the package. In this case, the solution must be made a little thicker than for laying tiles on the walls.
  • Apply the adhesive mixture to the base. At the same time, it is important to distribute it evenly and accurately over the surface.
  • Lay the tiles prepared in advance. Then be sure to carefully align it with a level.
  • Try to keep the gaps as small as possible. Grout breaks down faster than tiles.
  • When laying, install a grate that will be used to circulate warm air.
  • Clean the holes from the applied glue.
  • Wait for the glue to set.
  • Rub down tile joints.
  • Cover the end of the countertop window sill with a prepared ceramic corner.
  • Glue the edges of the countertop window sill with molding.

How to care?

The table top made of moisture-resistant plywood, covered with tiles, will last 10 years or more. To get out, follow a few simple tips:

  • Wash and clean tiles regularly. If the texture of the selected model is embossed, then you will have to work harder
  • Protect the tiles from mechanical stress that leads to damage. Do not hit it with a hammer. At the same time, you can put hot dishes on such a tabletop without any special fears.
  • Clean grout joints regularly as they collect dirt.

Useful recommendation! Observe the basic rules of care, since a thrifty attitude, as well as timely and regular cleaning of the surface, will significantly increase the operational life of the window sill-countertop.

Instead of output

A window sill countertop is an excellent solution for a kitchen, regardless of its size. It has a set of advantages and is easy to install. Remove restrictions and create an original kitchen interior with your own hands in order to get real pleasure from the work performed and the effect obtained for an extremely long time.

If you equip a work area or a bar counter on the kitchen windowsill, the useful area of the kitchen will increase by at least 0.5 sq. m. Whether it is a lot or a little - the owners of small apartments know, in which every centimeter counts. However, if you listen to the professionals, the countertop in the kitchen on the windowsill may not always be installed, and in some photos the implementation of this idea looks very doubtful. What nuances should be taken into account so that the redevelopment brings only benefits and pleasure?

When replacing a standard window sill with a functional stove combined with a kitchen set, the homeowner usually pursues one of two goals: to make the cramped and small kitchen more spacious and to modernize its design. These plans are quite achievable, but provided that the newly-appeared space is well planned at the design stage, and all the details of the reconstruction are observed.

The functionality of the countertop-window sill is varied

Countertop, bar counter, table

After placing household appliances in a medium-sized kitchen, there is an acute shortage of space for work processes. Therefore, the use of a window sill as a main or additional table top is the first thing that comes to mind in this case. Judging by the photo, such a countertop looks organically even in large kitchens, where it can connect two opposite walls of kitchen furniture.

Embedding a small table-window sill in a headset

Another favorite way to use a window sill is to use it as a bar counter. It will not be possible to install a full-fledged pedestal-stand in cramped conditions, but its alternative version in the form of a narrow table can be actively used for emotional tea drinking, intimate communication with one or two interlocutors, as well as storing glasses, glasses and other useful utensils.

And finally, the third option is to transform the window sill into a dining table. This is quite realistic if the depth of the window block exceeds 35 cm, and there are no bulky items around the window - a refrigerator, a pencil case. Having provided free access, it is easy to place 2-3 chairs near the window and move the dining area here for 2-3 households.

Alternatively, the table can be made folding or transformable. In the unfolded state, it forms a single plane with the windowsill, and when more space is required in the kitchen, the table is easily removed. This solution is optimal for extremely small rooms, however, the convenience of transforming tables largely depends on the quality of manufacturing of the fixing elements.

Countertop instead of a window sill - pros and cons

In the photo, these solutions seem simple and affordable in execution: it is enough to increase the depth of the window sill plate, and a convenient place for cutting food or eating is ready. Whether this is so, you can understand by examining the pros and cons of such a reorganization. Its undoubted advantage is an increase in the ergonomics and efficiency of the kitchen, since a rather large area appears in the family's use.

Active use of the new area

Other pluses are obvious:

  • saving on artificial lighting - natural light falling on the window-sill area almost all day allows you not to turn on the electric lamps;
  • the ability to install additional drawers, storage cabinets and even a washing or dishwasher;
  • clear delineation of zones, due to which the small room becomes more orderly;
  • in the presence of a picturesque view from the window, the culinary specialist can observe him in parallel with cooking, distracting from routine activities;
  • improvement of kitchen design - both in the photo and in reality, angular and U-shaped layouts look much more attractive than single-line, traditionally used in small areas.

There are also pitfalls to this idea:

  • violation of convection near the window - a fully or partially closed radiator is not able to create an effective thermal curtain, and as a result, window panes begin to fog up at the slightest cold snap;
  • instability of the window sill structure - replacing a narrow countertop with a wide one leads to the fact that, due to the cyclic load on the unfixed edge, the slopes crack and the window frames are deformed;
  • increased pollution - the use of a window sill as a work surface or dining area inevitably leads to the appearance of colored and greasy stains, from which the appearance of plasterboard and plastered slopes suffers.

It should also be borne in mind that PVC, from which window sills are usually made, does not withstand high temperatures, therefore it is not recommended to put hot utensils on them, as on ordinary countertops.

Window areas will have to be washed often.

Window sill-countertop design options

Given the shortcomings, the idea of combining a window sill with a furniture set can be considered successful with some reservations: for its successful implementation, you need to choose the right material for the built-in countertop and correctly combine it with the base. Certain features also exist in operation - if you adhere to them, the design will last a long time and will look like in the cover photo.

Material selection

The main requirements for the material of the countertop are moisture and heat resistance. It is also desirable that it be easily cleaned (you need to pay attention to the porosity), be light and resistant to detergents. Thus, for the manufacture of a tabletop located under the window, it is allowed to use:

  • laminated wood panels HDF and MDF - their sufficiently high strength and resistance to moisture are combined with ease of processing and installation, while there is a wide enough color palette that allows you to choose the desired shade and pattern;
  • Corian acrylic stone - its main advantages are presentability, light weight and absence of micropores; you can order a countertop of any shape and size, the seams between several parts are sanded to invisibility;
  • moisture-resistant plywood with a thickness of 15 mm - to extend its service life, it must be covered with a protective agent and varnish, it is also necessary to close the ends with a furniture edge planted with glue; the worktop trimmed in this way looks good and is inexpensive;
  • natural granite, onyx or marble are the most durable materials that perfectly endure the operating conditions in the kitchen; they are also the most expensive and heavy, so their installation implies a significant increase in the number of fasteners;
  • natural wood is another option for a premium class countertop that requires constant maintenance and regular treatment with antiseptics, it fits perfectly into the classic or eco-style and has good mechanical properties.

If you look at the photos of modern kitchens, you can see the original combined countertops made of different types of material: stone and glass, stone and wood, chipboard and plastic. This manufacturing technology allows you to embed lighting, various decorative elements into the table, thereby giving it a unique appearance.

Subtleties of installation

It is not difficult to get around the technical problems associated with convection: for this, one or two holes should be cut in the worktop, and then closed with ventilation grilles (preferably metal). If it is planned to put bedside tables under the windowsill opposite the heating radiators, then it is also necessary to provide for a ventilated facade in the form of a through lattice in them.

The wider the tabletop, the more support points it should have. Furniture legs 80–90 cm long can serve as additional supports, but if you have a choice, it is better to opt for chrome-plated tubes with a diameter of about 25 mm, attached to the table top and to the floor. Such a configuration is not much more expensive, but it provides the proper rigidity of the structure.

Frame and legs increase structural rigidity

The tabletop, like a regular window sill, sits on the base with the help of polyurethane foam. A large contact area allows you to get a reliable connection, and under the window sill itself there will be no gaps through which the wind will blow into the apartment. Its joint with the frame must be treated with a sealant so that the moisture formed in the off-season does not get inside.

Separately, it is necessary to mention the level of installation of the window sill-table top. Often the kitchen window is located 70–100 cm from the floor. The standard height of the countertop is 85 cm, respectively, you need to think about how to dock two different-level surfaces. Usually the sill is below, and it can be lifted in one of three ways:

  • replacing the existing window with a smaller window block and then building up the base;
  • by imposing beams of the appropriate size on the installation surface (the void formed under the countertop can be used for the installation of drawers);
  • masking joints with decorative corners.

The photo shows that not all homeowners are puzzled by this problem and leave the main and additional countertops at different levels.

Maintenance and repair

The easiest to clean is the acrylic stone countertop - in the photo, by the way, it cannot be distinguished from the natural one. The non-porous surface does not absorb liquid, is impermeable to microorganisms and does not contribute to the appearance of stains, washable with conventional (non-abrasive) agents. The following recommendations will help to extend the life of the countertop:

  • cut food only on a cutting board;
  • protect from heavy objects falling onto its surface;
  • put hot dishes on special supports;
  • use soft sponges for wiping.

The most difficult to care for is a stone

The same advice is true for window sills made of natural stone, but there are also differences for each type:

  • spilled liquid from a granite countertop should not be wiped off, but soaked, and done as soon as possible - it is especially "afraid" of wine (acid) and oil stains; to reduce their absorption, the surface of the material should be impregnated (soaked) with water and oil with repelling agents every 2-3 years;
  • for marble and onyx countertops, it is imperative to select chemicals that are safe for natural stone (chlorine cleaners, such as Domestos, are categorically contraindicated); spilled juice, sauce, wine harm them, which can only be repaired by polishing, so they should be eliminated immediately.

MDF and chipboard surfaces are less capricious, but they should also not be rubbed with abrasive substances such as soda. But they are not so afraid of acid, you can keep it clean with ordinary or apple cider vinegar diluted with water.

Plywood and MDF need to be protected from water

As for the repair, you can get rid of small scratches yourself by carefully sanding and grinding the material. Spot damage can be repaired with a suitable type of glue mixed with sawdust or powdered plastic. It is better to eliminate more serious defects with the help of specialists with professional equipment and experience (it is worth checking it by examining the photos in the portfolio).

DIY plywood and tile countertops

It is quite logical to develop the idea of combining a countertop with a window sill to make it independently from materials that are almost always at hand - waterproof plywood and ceramic tiles. You can dispose of the tiles left over after repairs, or you can pick up more wear-resistant porcelain stoneware. The number of tiles is determined based on the dimensions of the future countertop.

Plywood will need two sheets, which will be fastened in two layers. Before opening them, it is necessary to remove the exact dimensions from the window sill and calculate the total depth of the countertop so that it does not exceed 70 cm, otherwise it will be difficult to reach the window opening. After the measurements are made, the work is divided into several stages:

  1. Cutting and preparation of plywood parts: tabletop elements are cut with a jigsaw along the marked lines, and then covered with impregnation and waterproofing compound.
  2. Base leveling: at the time of attachment, the base surface must be leveled; from the side of the kitchen window, support bars are installed on it, and perforated metal connectors are installed on the edges.
  3. Installation of the first plywood board: the plywood is securely fastened with self-tapping screws to the bars and to the metal connectors.
  4. Installation of the second sheet: wood glue is applied to the first slab in a zigzag manner, then the second layer of plywood is laid and pressed tightly, which is recommended to be tightened to the first one with self-tapping screws.
  5. Joint treatment: the gaps between the table top, window and slopes are sealed with silicone sealant or liquid waterproofing. Also, free edges should be processed, including at the cutting points.
  6. Finishing the front edge of the tabletop-window sill: the edge of the board should be immediately revetted with an overhead metal edging, or better with an oak edging, having a height of 8-10 mm higher than the plywood base - so the glued tile will fit flush with it.

It remains to treat the finished base with a latex primer, and for sticking ceramic tiles - with ready-made mastic. Further cladding is carried out using standard technology.

To summarize, the kitchen table built into the window sill panel is not only fashionable, but also practical. With its help, the useful area of the room increases, which is especially important for its small dimensions. But before installation, it is important to think in advance about the solutions to technical problems arising from changes in the size and function of the window sill:

  • Ensure the creation of a thermal curtain at the window panes - this is done by cutting convection holes in the countertop.
  • Create additional support points for a wide window sill-table top - in the form of wooden or metal legs and a reliable adhesive connection.
  • Choose the material that is appropriate in terms of characteristics, not only for the table, but also for the slopes - they can be replaced with plastic ones, tiled or painted with moisture-resistant paint.

These are far from the only ways to get around problems - in the selection of photos below, other possible solutions are shown. The most successful of them have been developed and implemented by professional designers and contractors - their participation in the process allows you to get a predictable result.
