Bathroom renovation in Khrushchev. Luxurious options for a small bathroom in Khrushchev - the secrets of great design! How to make an inexpensive bathroom renovation in Khrushchev

A good renovation of the bathroom is the hallmark of the entire apartment and the attitude of the owners to the family and to themselves. You can make a stylish renovation in the living room, but if the bathroom is unpresentable, the impression about people will be correct - the desire to seem prevails over the essence. Therefore, making a beautiful renovation of the bathroom in the Khrushchev is the first task.

The housing built during the reign of Khrushchev perfectly solved the task - resettling the barracks and improving the quality of life of the population, as a result of increasing the birth rate and strengthening the institution of the family. It was planned to further improve the living conditions, but it did not work, and now the owners of the "khrushchob" are trying to give the obsolete square meters stylish content and modernization. In Europe, in principle, they take care of any housing and from the most neglected cases they get maximum benefit without compromising quality.

In the bathroom of a standard Khrushchev, the weak link is size. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the area of the bathroom taking into account every centimeter.

Dismantling plan

The main rule is to start and stop repairs on time!

In the implementation of the task, the following are important: dismantling plan, design project, finishing, deadline for each stage of repair and finishing.

Dismantling plan:

  • If the bathroom is separate, think about whether to combine it. On the one hand, a useful area will be added, on the other hand, only one person will be able to use a shared bathroom, if someone needs to satisfy "natural urges", then they will have to wait or run to their neighbors.
  • Deciding to combine the bathroom and toilet, make sure that from a legal point of view, there will be no problems. Repairing a bathroom in Khrushevka requires not only material, but also legal preparation when combining a bathroom at its own discretion.
  • Inspect the plumber: what to keep, what to throw away, what to restore.
  • To be or not to be pipe replacement - inspect the plumbing and sewerage systems, the old cast-iron pipes definitely need to be replaced. Their service life has long expired and if a pipe break occurs after the completion of the repair, then all your efforts will be in vain.
  • Take out of the bathroom mirrors, shelves, furniture, leave the tub and toilet. How long the repair will take is still unknown, and hygiene procedures are mandatory, shutdown and dismantling of plumbing is done last.
  • Examine the doors, the solidity and completeness of the interior of the whole apartment is given by high-quality identical doors, baseboards and perfectly finished ceilings. Repair of a bathroom in a Khrushchev can become a starting point for the repair of an entire apartment. If you are on the way to your goal, then the doors are worth changing.
  • Decide what gender you want... The bathroom is rarely heated, which means it is quite cool in winter. In heating the bathroom, a warm floor will help - you can make it yourself comfortably and inexpensively.
  • The work front has been marked.

Design project

There are ready-made design projects, with a slight correction for the size of a particular bathroom, they are quite acceptable. Another option is to implement the bathroom design in the context of the overall style of the house. That is, the color palette resonates with all rooms, the chosen style leaves an imprint on the bathroom. These are standard and good solutions for bathroom design. Repair of the bathroom in Khrushchev has been done by many and worthy examples can be found in open sources.

With a non-standard approach, think of a separate design for the bathroom, which will be helped by a specialist, better with a specialized architectural education. He will not only design the design component, but also give professional tips, advice in repair and finishing work. Moreover, most of them know about the qualities of building and finishing materials not only from the words of the consultant, but also tested them in practice. Due to the peculiarities of the profession, a practicing architect probably knows where to buy high-quality plumbing fixtures, furniture and will offer to do it at a discount.

Building fever

Having understood what the bathroom will be like, buy building materials, finishing materials can be bought during the construction process.

    • Replacing pipes ... Bathroom renovation in Khrushchev begins with pipes. After dismantling the old water supply and drainage system, check the risers, they may also need replacement. Usually the communication system in Khrushchev's apartments is hidden in a box. Hiding communications is important, but more important is how to do it. The best way out is. Access can be obtained at any time. You can never be sure that all the neighbors from the upper floors not only changed communications, but also did it right. Therefore, leave access to the pipes full, and not in the form of a small window for one hand.
    • Walls ... The wall cladding needs to be knocked down. But in the case of a bathroom in a Khrushchev, it is necessary to knock down to the brickwork. This creates an excellent base for solid wall plastering. Aligning the walls with drywall sheets in a small bathroom means “stealing” a decent amount of space on a bathroom scale.
    • A bathroom renovation in a Khrushchev building cannot do without revising the electrical network. Before starting plastering work, check the wiring and replace it better. Put the wire for the bathroom in a plastic pipe to protect it from moisture. Route the wiring in the grooved grooves and secure to the wall with metal pipe clamps.

Multi-colored cladding
  • Floor ... Remove the old base, thoroughly clean the floor. Before making a screed, check the floor level, if there is a slope - take this feature into account and strive to make the new floor as even as possible. For installation, carry out all the required work so that only the facing remains the last step.
  • Having completed plumbing installation and sewers, check them in practice, eliminate all the shortcomings, minor leaks.
  • Ceiling ... Best for this surface. Usually the ceilings in Khrushchevs are not high, and therefore any facing will lower the ceiling. But there is a trick that will help to visually make it higher. Install a special wide cornice for LED lighting around the perimeter of the bathroom. In this case, the benefits will be multiple: several lighting scenarios, the ability to set the color, the absence of a central lamp, the regulation of the light intensity, the economy of electricity use.

At all stages of construction work, there are intermediate drying stages. This rule applies to screeds, plaster; chipping and laying of pipes also do not take place in one day. In the process of these works, you can purchase finishing materials, plumbing, furniture, decor and all the necessary stuff for the bathroom.

The joys of finishing

  • Install a door frame if you decide to change the door.
  • The walls are finished first. It is easy to lay the facing on the plastered and leveled surfaces. It is not always necessary and expedient to lay out the wall with tiles from floor to ceiling; a wall painted with water-based paint looks very nice, on which you can place a nice poster, photo or other handmade gizmos. Perfect for interior decoration - unlimited possibilities for decoration.
  • The next step is to tackle the ceiling, it is easier and more expedient to paint it white. Allow him to breathe and not "press" on the surrounding space. Renovation of the bathroom in Khrushchev makes it possible to make the interior more free.
  • The last stage of finishing work is the flooring. The best option is ceramic tiles. There are a great many options for colors, shapes, sizes, but one condition is important - the roughness of the tile surface. A humid bathroom environment makes glossy tiles traumatic, so opt for a tile with a non-slip surface or a rubber mat on the floor.
  • Clean up.

Bathroom renovation in Khrushchev: stages of work

Active finish

When all the finishing work has been done, it remains to bring in and install the heating equipment in their places,

In winter, unexpectedly and unexpectedly, a major overhaul came to our forty-year-old Khrushchev. But still, as they say, whatever is done is for the best. Looking at how the plumbers changed the old cast-iron Khrushchev risers for polypropylene and PVC, I finally gathered my thoughts and realized that if I don't start major repairs in the bathroom and toilet now, I will never start it in this house.

Initial data and idea

The bathroom in my Khrushchev is separate. The dimensions of the bathroom in the light are 1520 * 1360 mm, but with certain manipulations they can be increased by 5-6 cm in each dimension, which I will discuss below.

The main idea of the new bathroom was to turn the bathtub 90 degrees and orient it along the far wall (opposite the front door). In my wife and I's opinion, this position is more rational, although we understood that we would lose ten centimeters in length.

Preparatory work

To prepare for the immediate start of work in the bathroom, I took about two weeks to decide on the project of the future bathroom: to draw up the layout of the water supply and sewerage system, ventilation, the tile laying scheme, etc.

So, what is a bathroom in a typical panel Khrushchev? In fact, this is just a cabin, which was cast somewhere on the DSK and already assembled was installed in its place in the Khrushchev during construction. The walls of the cab have a scanty thickness of 3-5 cm and are made with reinforced gypsum concrete. The material is very weak and easily crumbles with a hammer drill or even a hammer. In the picture below, the walls of the "cabin" are shaded and, as we can see, they are adjacent to two load-bearing walls of the Khrushchev, in one of which (between the kitchen and the bathroom) there are ventilation shafts.

In repair practice, the most common option is to demolish the Khrushchev partition between the toilet and the bathroom, which supposedly makes the bathroom more spacious and there is a lot of extra space. However, in my opinion, this is the most common delusion: no matter how much I tried to hypothetically design such a "spacious" combined bathroom in my Khrushchev, nothing came of it.

As I said, the dimensions of the bathroom in my Khrushchev in the light are 1360 * 1520 mm. On the long side we had a bathtub 150 cm, which we decided to replace by 140 cm and put it on the short side. For this, from the existing dimensions, I lacked 4 cm, which I decided to get by demolishing the bathroom wall adjacent to the supporting wall of the Khrushchev with ventilation shafts. This "drywall" was smashed with a conventional bricklayer's hammer in just three to four hours. The hardest part was taking out almost two full baths of construction waste. The mesh is carefully cut with a grinder.

Alas, I cannot demonstrate the old, pre-renovated look of the Khrushchev's bathroom, but believe me, everything was very sad there.

I warn you that by demolishing the Khrushchev wall, you deprive the ceiling of one point of support. It is folded with the same gypsum concrete and is part of an integral "cabin". It can also be dismantled, but I decided to simply strengthen the bathroom ceiling by supporting it with a 40 * 50 mm bar and 10 * 100mm dowels - this is quite enough.

Two of the four walls in the Khrushchev bathroom turned out to be crooked, with a blockage up to 3 cm, so I had to deal with their alignment.

After I repaired the kitchen and the corridor in my Khrushchev, I already had some plastering skills, but in the bathroom I decided to use a different method of leveling the walls, which I really liked. Holes are drilled in the wall in several rows, self-tapping screws are twisted in them, the heads of which are set in level and thus the reference points of a new, even and strictly vertical plane are obtained (in the first picture below, you can see the screws sticking out of the wall on the right). We prime the walls and wait 1.5-2 hours. Then we take slabs of moisture-resistant plasterboard 1500 * 600 mm, which are ideally adjusted to the dimensions of our wall in Khrushchev (1520 mm) and "glued" to the wall with a special glue solution for drywall. Unlike plaster, the adhesive hardens faster (up to 20 minutes), so the boards do not slip. The composition is applied with "buns" every 15-20 cm, on which the gypsum board is laid and touched with a mallet or pressed with a rule so that the plane of the plate coincides with the plane of the previously exposed screw heads.

The joints between the slabs are sealed either with the same compound, or simply with plaster. The time for leveling the wall takes only 20 minutes, that is, exactly as much as the glue composition diluted in a bucket freezes.

Try to move the 120 kilogram from its place, and then take it out so as not to bomb half the apartment in the Khrushchev (already repaired, by the way). I watched a video on YouTube of how these cast-iron bathtubs are cut with grinders, drilled with drills, even smashed with pood weights! (cast iron is brittle and can be chipped / broken). However, my wife's uncle stopped me in time and said that all these baths are easy to take out, if you do everything correctly and technically.

While the uncle was at the entrance to the house, I managed to shake the bathtub in one person, put it on the bottom and remove the legs. The thresholds were covered with thick rugs, and soft tourist rugs were laid on the way of our movement from the apartment. In such an upright position, we neatly carried the bath to the landing of the Khrushchev and further up the stairs we carried it out into the street without any problems. On this day, our apartment lost its last native element - an old Soviet cast-iron bathtub.

So, now I have nowhere to wash in Khrushchev, so I need to act quickly and efficiently so that the new bathtub is in place at least in three or four days. The first thing to do is water supply and sewerage.

Plumbing and sewerage

I changed the old cast-iron sewage system in the Khrushchev a year earlier, now I just had to change the layout of the PVC pipes of the Khrushchev and do one very time-consuming piece of work - chipping the wall for the sewer and water supply at the future sink site (in the picture it is on the right).

Shtrobing the bearing walls of a Khrushchev is not a good thing, and it is doubly bad if you gash horizontally, not vertically. But on construction forums and a number of sites, information was found that if the depth of chasing does not exceed a third of the power of the Khrushchev wall, then this type of work is still possible, or, as the builders put it more simply, it is possible to chase until the first reinforcement, no further.

Armed with a powerful hammer drill and a grinder with a diamond disc for concrete, I began this dirty work. Self-protection means must have a respirator, goggles and gloves.

In total, it took me about 4 hours to complete it. The depth and width of the groove is such that a 32 mm diameter sewer pipe can be installed in it. It is imperative that a slight slope of the pipe (5 degrees) be provided on a horizontal section to ensure water flow. We remove the sewer pipe from the groove using angled elbows (at 45 degrees) and install an adapter from a diameter of 32 mm to 50 mm (the main diameter of the sewer). This part of the sewer will already be hidden by the bathroom (blue mark on the wall), so there is no need to deal with further strobing.

We collect the sewage system observing the same rule - the slope towards the riser should be about 5 degrees so that the water does not stagnate in the pipes, but flows normally.

A little trick: in order for PVC pipes to join easily, lubricate them with liquid soap.

This is the wiring left behind by the plumbers who changed the riser in the house.

I don't know if it could have been done somehow more practical and easier? I think it was possible. Two polypropylene ball valves (32 mm) and a bridge between them are not a basic option. I asked the plumbers to make such a design so that I could install a heated towel rail myself, without involving anyone. Without a jumper, during the installation of the towel, I would have to leave my entire Khrushchev without hot water.

I drew a diagram of the future wiring of the water supply and sewerage system of the Khrushchev's bathroom on a sheet of paper. It is necessary, including in order to correctly calculate the number of fittings and pipes needed to purchase.

With this scheme, I went to the construction market, once again consulted with the seller and bought everything I needed. From him, from the seller, I took a special soldering iron for polypropylene pipes for a week. I had no experience with such a tool, but I saw how plumbers do it, and YouTube is always at hand. For training, before the main work, I took a couple of extra couplings to indulge in - the soldering process is quick and not at all complicated.

What you need to know when installing a water supply system from polypropylene pipes:

Pipes come in a variety of diameters, but 16 mm (1/2 in.) Pipes are most commonly used for water supply and 32 mm (1 in.) For heated towel rails.

Pipes are available separately for hot and cold water supply. Hot water pipes have an internal reinforcement that is visible in the cut (red).

Sellers can say that the water in our pipes is not so hot, so you don't have to steam and put the same pipes for cold water supply, however, in this case, they can and will definitely give deformation (stretch) from temperature, which can be quite unpleasant. For example, in my case, the plumbers who changed the risers during the overhaul of the Khrushchev house cost one type of pipes (for cold water) and when hot water began to circulate in the system, then these pipes simply crawled away and my jumper became a curve (see the photo of the toilet above).

You can also solder pipes in one person, but it is more convenient to do it together: one holds the soldering iron, and the second puts fittings on it, heats up and joins. My wife helped me to solder the pipes - it was the best March 8 for her)).

It is better to collect small elements and units separately and then dock them to the main water supply. The picture above shows the nodes that will "go" to the kitchen: the outlets for the kitchen mixer and the outlet for the washing machine.

The pipes are cut with special scissors, but if they are not there, then this is easily done with a grinder or a hacksaw for metal, in which case it will simply be necessary to process the edges of the pipes with sandpaper or the same grinder so that there are no notches and the cut is even.

The soldering iron must be warmed up to operating temperature. We put fittings tightly on it on both sides, which must be connected, count to 8 and then quickly remove the fittings and join evenly. The most important thing in this matter after the docking has taken place is in no case to correct or turn the fittings, even if they did not dock exactly as you would like. Such a loose connection can then leak.

It is also necessary to control that the pipe goes into the fitting to a sufficient depth (determined by the inner boundary of the socket of the fitting).

The ideal joint is one where a rim / ring made of molten polypropylene evenly bends around the pipe. In no case should you cut it off!

Well, in general, all the basic recommendations. I don’t know whether it’s right or not, but I soldered my plumbing in Khrushchev from the kitchen to the riser in the toilet, and not vice versa. It took me a whole day to dismantle the old one and install a new water supply and sewerage system in Khrushchev. Plastic plugs (red in the photo) are twisted into the outputs on the faucets, so far there is only water in the kitchen. We turn on the water, open the faucet in the kitchen and check the system for leaks. Lucky - not a single leak was found.

Another point regarding the piping to the mixers. For a mixer in a washbasin, the distance between the pipes does not really matter, because the connection will be made with flexible hoses, but the bathroom mixer has a fixed distance between the pipes - 150 mm. Therefore, the distance between the centers of the fittings that lead to the mixer must be exactly 150 mm. If you haven't guessed by a couple of millimeters, then it's okay - you can then adjust it using "ducks" (special sleeves on which the mixer pipes are screwed).

The next stage of work is laying tiles on the floor. I decided to cover the entire floor of the Khrushchev, including under the future bathroom: the overpayment is insignificant, and the effect is much more pleasant.

I did not do any preliminary leveling of the surface, no self-leveling floors, etc. In the evening, the rough floor of the Khrushchev was treated with a Ceresit CT16 paint primer, and the next morning, the wife's uncle arrived - he is our veneer. He laid the floor under the level, and the unevenness was corrected with the thickness of the adhesive solution.

Keramin tile. Manhattan Collection (gray). Two years earlier, we laid the same tile in the corridor and kitchen of our Khrushchev. We decided that in our little Khrushchev, everything should be done in the same style - no gzhel and gypsyism, which annoyed my uncle-veneer for a long time.

In place of the bathtub, the tiles left over from that repair were laid, as you can see, it differs in tone from the new tile purchased.

After the glue dries, the next day, I gouged a niche in the gypsum concrete wall, which will be located above the bathroom and is intended for shampoos and other small bottles. Alabaster grabbed the water pipes in the gutter and then plastered everything. I did not do this before laying the tiles because I had to adjust to the tiling schedule.

Bath installation and manufacturing of a screen under the bath

While waiting for couriers with a new bathroom, I began to align the second curve of the Khrushchev wall (wall with a door). The same slabs of moisture-resistant drywall were used, the joints between which were covered with plaster. The corners that are visible in the frame were intended for attaching shelves to them for the entire width of the wall (for basins, etc.). In the course of the work, the veneer suggested a slightly different method of manufacturing and fixing such a shelf (I will describe it later)

I also brought out a socket with several degrees of protection (a special socket for bathrooms) and soldered pipes for a heated towel rail. Later, it will remain to screw in the corner brass "American women" and hang a "towel" on them.

Finally, a new bathtub arrived. Be sure to arrange an inspection of the product together with couriers on the street, after which they bring it into the apartment and put it on the priest in the bathroom.

Here we need to start a conversation about the eternal: what kind of bath should be - acrylic, steel or cast iron? You can argue and give reasons endlessly, but I will not do this, because this is a topic for a separate article. Personally, I liked the German steel bath Kaldewei Saniform Plus 140 * 70. Is steel noisy? Does it hold the temperature poorly? Calm down dear, all this is not about her. There are steel baths on sale with a wall thickness of 2 and even 1.3 mm, and this one has a record 3.5 mm. I read a bunch of negative and sometimes horrifying reviews about modern cast-iron baths, about the unsatisfactory quality of casting, about how the enamel is already starting to turn yellow literally after a month or two of operation ... Kaldewei Saniform Plus turned out to be the only bathroom, about which there was not a single negative review, but on the contrary the owners were happy with everything. So I bought it and did not regret it.

I installed the 40-kilogram bath in one person, without assistants, which could not have been done with a cast-iron product. I installed a siphon / semiautomatic device on it, put legs,

and then gently put it on the floor. Two levels lay on the sides of the bath (long and short), along which, using adjustable legs, I installed the product strictly horizontally. No bullying towards the drain !!! Absolutely all baths have a bottom slope, which ensures a normal flow of water. To exclude the slightest hesitation, the bath must be wedged: wooden wedges are hammered between the wall and the side.

Noise test showed that the noise of falling water in this bathtub differs little from that in the old cast iron one. If you continue to be skeptical about this case, then buy a couple of sheets of car noise insulation and glue them to the bottom and sides of the bath.

Now that the bathtub is wedged out and does not wobble, you can start making the screen. To begin with, general provisions:

If you want to make a really good renovation, then refuse any purchased bath screens.

The screen under the bathroom should be tiled - this is both beautiful and hygienic.

Forget about the last century and in no case do these squalid foot niches. Previously, when they washed in basins or in the bathroom, they may have been needed by the housewives, but today we live in the age of washing machines, so why not these niches that nobody needs.

The screen must provide emergency access to the pipes, so a small part (in the area of the siphon) should either be left open or covered with a piece of tile, which, if necessary, will be easily removed. It is not at all necessary to install steel or plastic inspection hatches.

Also, make the screen strictly vertical, do not experiment with all sorts of inclined surfaces. They can spoil the geometry of the room.

Well, now let's start making a screen for a bath with our own hands. For the frame of the screen, we need steel profiles of 27 * 27 mm for drywall. Based on the videos on YouTube, I made a preliminary marking under the bathtub (at the bottom left of the frame, you can see pencil marks and a long line along the entire length of the bathtub). In general, the markup is done like this:

From the side of the bathtub on the wall along the level, draw a vertical line to the floor - this is the first notch on the floor.

From the first notch, we retreat inward a distance equal to the width of the bent edge of the bath rim and set the second notch.

From the second notch, we retreat the distance equal to the thickness of the tile and the layer of glue (third notch) and, finally, we retreat another 12 mm (thickness of the drywall sheet) and get the fourth notch.

The fourth notch will be the edge of our steel bathtub frame. Using a level and a ruler, retreat the resulting distance from the other side of the bath. Draw a straight line between the serifs. We will attach the profile along it.

The steel profile is trimmed with a grinder; to make the structure rigid, two profiles are folded and twisted with self-tapping screws. To save myself from unnecessarily drilling holes in the floor of the Khrushchev, I glued the lower profile with silicone sealant. The most important thing in this matter is to first reliably degrease the surfaces to be glued with white spirit or acetone. Then we apply silicone sealant and firmly press the profile to the floor. In about an hour and a half, it will practically not be ripped off. The upper profile is glued to the side of the bath in the same way. Bars can be inserted into the gaps between the bathtub and the profile, again to give rigidity.

Vertical ribs near the wall already need to be mounted on dowels (here you cannot do without drilling), and middle vertical ribs - on self-tapping screws.

Before we sew up the space with a sheet of drywall, we put a ground wire on the bath (attached to the black ear on the left in the top photo).

Finally, a sheet of drywall with a cutout for access to the siphon under the bathroom takes its place. Cutout dimensions 260x400 mm. Drywall is attached to the profile with self-tapping screws. So, the manufacture of a screen for a bath in my Khrushchev is over.

Room cladding

Again, in the evening I primed all the walls and the screen under the bathroom with Ceresit CT19 primer paint. When working with it, I strongly recommend that you thoroughly cover the bath with an old blanket or sheet and immediately wipe off the primer if it gets on the enamel or tiles - it will be too difficult to remove it later, after drying.

At the stage of preparatory work, I drew up a layout of tiles from the Keramin "Manhattan" and Italian Alta Ceramica collections ("La Petra di Volta" collection. An apron in the kitchen was laid out with Italian tiles and we are delighted with it.

It took two and a half working days to finish the bathroom. The most difficult work was in the diagonal laying of Italian tiles, but our cladder successfully coped with the task.

Ultimately, the niche was made not dark, as in the layout diagram, but light. In the frame, you can already see the new Wassercraft mixer with a short spout, located not at the end of the bathroom, as usual, but on the side, so that it is convenient to regulate the flow of water without getting out of the bath.

And here is the shelf above the front door, already tiled. Made of two sheets of thin drywall (6mm) screwed to a wooden frame (boards 100x18 mm). This shelf now contains basins and containers with clean towels.

The wiring for the fan and hanging cabinet was pre-wired.

Well, somehow it happened. Upon completion of the work, even the skeptical uncle of his wife melted away - he really liked the result of our idea and his work. On the right, under the bathroom, there is a place for access to communications.

Installation of hanging cabinets, etc.

After all the seams were filled in, it was time to install the rest of the Khrushchev bathroom furniture. The mirror cabinet was attracted by the Russian manufacturer "Aquaton". All the small rubbish (deodorants, shaving products, wife's cosmetics) and even a place still remained in it. Visually, the cabinet practically does not eat up the space in the bathroom of the Khrushchev, because of the mirror it is not even immediately possible to understand that this is a cabinet at all.

The fan was bought from the Spanish manufacturer Cataco - always with a cord. That is, the fan power is combined with the Khrushchev bathroom light switch, but it is always possible to turn off the device with this very cord.

I closed the inspection hole not with a miserable hatch, but with a piece of tile, to which the striking strips of furniture magnets were glued. The seam between the tiles was sealed with a sealant in the color of the fugue. It turned out to be a seemingly monolithic screen under the bathroom, but in which case the sealant is simply cut off, and the tile is removed with a suction cup - access to communications is open.

The heated towel rail was one of the last to hang. In order not to damage the brass "American" when tightening the thread, I recommend holding a thick rag between the key and the nut. Well, yes, the threads are packed either with tow and unipack, or with a thick Teflon thread. For greater reliability, I also recommend buying several gaskets for an inch pipe (I forgot what material they are from, but they do not squeeze through as rubber).

I put water on a towel - everything is sealed. Lucky again.

For a long time we could not decide on a hanging cabinet and a washbasin for the bathroom, but at the very last moment they found a wonderful product from AM&PM Like 80 cm.After installing the bath and lining it with a screen, 79 cm remained for installing the hanging cabinet and at first I was worried that -for this unfortunate centim, you will have to take the curbstone already. But as it turned out, 80 cm is the width of the washbasin, and it protrudes beyond the dimensions of the cabinet by 1 cm in each direction, so the width of the cabinet is 78 cm, which naturally suits us. Tunic in tunic you can say))

The choice in favor of a hanging cabinet was because visually it is not as bulky as the floor one. Plus, again, there is always access to the siphon under the bathroom (remember the revision hole). The photo also shows a socket with a protective shield.

The Wassercraft faucet is from the same series as on the bathroom - cute, angular as we like)) The sink has a bottom valve with a click-clack system (pressed - you can draw water into the sink, pressed again - flushed water).

This is the kind of room we got at the finish of the main work.

It's no secret that a large percentage of the population of our country continues to live in Khrushchev-built houses. For many Soviet families, Khrushchev became the first and long-awaited home of their own. As a rule, apartments in Khrushchevs were handed out from organizations, in turn. Much has changed since then. We usually get such apartments from our grandparents or are purchased on a mortgage as the most affordable housing. How to correctly repair a bathroom in Khrushchev?

The layout of a standard apartment in Khrushchev is probably known to everyone. As a rule, these are one or two rooms (usually adjacent), a six-meter kitchen and a three-meter combined bathroom.

New owners often get an apartment in a very poor condition. But if you spend a certain amount of time, money and effort, then an ordinary Khrushchev can be turned into quite presentable housing.

If you take a responsible approach to the task at hand, then even the owners of apartments in new buildings will envy your new, stylish and comfortable interior.

We propose to start renovating an apartment in Khrushchev from the bathroom. We talked about the design in the Khrushchev bathroom in another article.

Main problems

Khrushchevs were initially positioned as a budget housing option, so they are completely free from any excesses - both in aesthetic and practical terms.

The layout provides for a minimum of usable space - just as much as needed to meet primary needs. The bathroom is no exception. A standard adjoining bathroom has barely space for basic plumbing - baths, sinks and toilet bowls. But we still need to place a washing machine, shelf, mirror, towels, cosmetics and household chemicals there. Therefore, the issues of beauty and convenience often fade into the background, giving way to issues of saving space.

So, the first problem of renovating a bathroom in Khrushchev is an extremely small area.

The second problem is connected with the fact that Khrushchev houses are, if not dilapidated, then very old houses. The very first Khrushchev buildings date back to 1959, and the last ones were built in 1985. That is, today, the "youngest" Khrushchevs are about 30 years old. Many houses have not undergone major repairs for decades, so the state of all engineering systems - sewerage, water supply, ventilation leaves much to be desired. Since modern plumbing fixtures often require connection to new, reliable water and sewer pipes, it is better to replace the entire wiring if possible. What cannot be replaced needs to be overhauled.

In addition, the poor state of communications, the impossibility of replacing them or transferring them limits the freedom to redevelop the bathroom in the Khrushchev.

The third problem applies not only to the Khrushchevs, but also to any "hastily" built housing. It - uneven walls that require additional work in order for them to be tiled.

Dismantling work

It is best to plan the location of plumbing and furniture in the bathroom after you have removed all the old equipment and finishes. Having a "blank sheet" in front of your eyes, it will be easier for you to fantasize. Preparatory work should begin with the dismantling of plumbing equipment. Be sure to turn off the hot and cold water supply before doing this.

After the old plumbing is removed, we proceed to dismantle the wiring of the water pipes, if necessary. The next step is to get rid of old finishes. Paint from walls and floors is removed with a stiff metal brush, and tiles are knocked down with a perforator or hammer and chisel. If it is required to level the floors, then the screed is crushed with a perforator to concrete. The remaining debris and dust must be thoroughly swept away.

Replacing pipes

It is necessary to start replacing water and sewer pipes before the floor and walls are leveled. First you need to have an accurate plan for the placement of plumbing equipment, in accordance with which the pipes will be laid in the bathroom.

If possible, replace the old cast iron pipes with plastic ones. They are no less reliable than cast iron, but weigh much less, so installation can be done alone. Plus, plastic pipes and tees help free up a few inches of usable space.

The pipes are placed in the grooves in the wall or fixed to it with metal clamps. If you wish, you can hide them in a drywall niche, but it "eats up" a lot of space. Since in Khrushchev, free space is worth its weight in gold, it is better to spend time chipping and plastering the walls.

When routing sewer pipes, do not forget about the slope. It should be 10-20 mm per running meter. If necessary, increase the thickness of the concrete screed on the floor, but be sure to respect the slope height of the sewer pipes. Where the piping connects to the riser, consider installing a straight-through valve so that you can turn off the hot and cold water supply yourself.

Electricity wiring is done before finishing work, since the walls will also need to be grooved to lay the wires.

Provide the required number of outlets in the bathroom, preferably double. with the corresponding protection class. The switch must be located outside the bathroom.

If there will be many electrical appliances in the bathroom, install a residual current device on the wiring.

Choice of materials

If our task is to spend as little money as possible on bathroom renovation, then the best option is to paint the walls with waterproof paint.

In addition to being cheap, this option has another advantage: by buying white paint and color scheme, you can achieve exactly the color you need, while other finishes do not always provide this opportunity.

But there is one significant nuance here: in order for the painted walls to look really beautiful, perfectly smooth walls are needed, and it is very difficult to achieve such walls in a Khrushchev.

Their only drawback is that this finish is not "for centuries", sooner or later it will have to be replaced with a more durable material.

The most common wall decoration with tiles and porcelain stoneware tiles. These materials have earned their popularity due to their long service life, resistance to temperature extremes and waterproofing properties. Today in the store you can find a variety of tiles in shape - square, rectangular, hexagonal. There is no point in talking about the variety of colors and patterns - there are a lot of variations. If you are not satisfied with ready-made solutions, you can create your own patterns by combining tiles of different colors and textures.

Think in advance about the color scheme of the bathroom, the perception of the room as a whole directly depends on it. Features of the choice and decoration of walls in the bathroom are discussed in detail in another article.

Tile is the best coating not only for walls, but also for bathroom floors, since only she is able to provide the proper level of waterproofing. There are other bathroom flooring options. The cheapest of them is linoleum, the most expensive is waterproof laminate. But in terms of their characteristics, both options are inferior to the tiled floor.

The ceiling can be simply painted with white paint or pasted over with plastic panels.

Firstly, it looks great, and secondly, it will protect you from leaks from above. And if you opt for a glossy material, then visually the ceiling will seem even higher than it really is.

The design of the ceiling should fit into the overall design of the bathroom. The ceiling in the bathroom can be very different, read our review and make your design dreams come true.

It is important to remember that you can start finishing the ceilings only when the walls are finished.

Preparation of surfaces for finishing

The preparation of the floor and walls for the installation of finishing materials begins with the dismantling of old coatings, which we have already described above. After the old covering from the walls has been removed, they need to be leveled if necessary. Use a special cement-based plaster for this. When the plaster is dry, putty on the walls. It is possible to level the walls with drywall sheets, but this method will significantly reduce the already small area of the bathroom.

The floor is prepared as follows:after dismantling the old concrete screed, remove the remnants of debris and dust, lay waterproofing, do not forget about the 15-centimeter overlap on the walls, and fill in a new screed.

Wall cladding with tiles

Procedure:

  • Using a plumb line and a building level, mark the horizontal and vertical lines on the wall.
  • Prepare the tile adhesive and apply it with a trowel to the area of the wall to be worked on.
  • Then, with a special spatula with teeth, walk over the treated section of the wall. Grooves will form on the glue.
  • Place the tiles against the wall and press down lightly. Adjust the distance between the tiles with plastic crosses.
  • When the work is done and the tile adhesive is dry, use a tile grout on the joints.

The choice of plumbing

The owners of apartments in Khrushchev have to be very thoughtful about the choice of plumbing for the bathroom.

First of all, you need to make a choice between a bath and a shower, since in a small room there is only room for one of these devices. A shower cabin saves space, which is useful for us in order to install, for example, a washing machine. In addition, it is much easier for the elderly and people with disabilities to use a shower than a bath without assistance.

Meanwhile, it is convenient to bathe small children in the tub or wash large items that require delicate hand washing. In addition, many people like to soak up at least occasionally in warm water and fragrant foam.

The vertical flush system allows you to place the toilet close to the wall, so you'd better opt for it.

Choice of doors

When choosing a door to the bathroom, the following important points should be considered:

  • The door must be resistant to temperature changes and moisture, not deform over time.
  • It must have heat-insulating and noise-insulating properties.
  • Doors should be fitted with quality handles and locks, as they wear out the fastest in the bathroom.
  • There must be an air vent in the door. If not, provide a gap between the door and the floor during installation.

Also read our article, where the choice of doors for the bathroom is discussed in detail. So you can not get lost in a huge selection and choose a quality door.

Bathroom doors are usually made of tempered glass, plastic, wood or chipboard. If you opt for products from reliable and well-established manufacturers, no matter what material the door is made of, it will certainly serve you for a long time.

To save space, you should pay attention to sliding doors or swing doors that open in both directions. You can also opt for folding doors, which are made according to the "accordion" principle.

The door to the bathroom can be installed only after all finishing work has been completed. If you still purchased a conventional swing door, then during installation, make sure that it opens outward, and not into the bathroom.

Repair and repair are different, and repairs in Khrushchev, one way or another, should not be budgetary. And the result should be pleasant to the eye and to the touch. Just such a repair option came across to me on a known one. Well, as you already understood, I could not get around this post and not duplicate it on this site with my comments. Looking ahead, I will say that this repair is not an indicator, but you can definitely take it as a basis, there are pluses and minuses, but about them a little lower.

A small background of the repair: the bathroom was chosen as the first room for renovation, because whatever one may say, but during the whole renovation the bathroom will be needed without it anywhere ... And another reason was the announcement of the sale of a large and new corner bath 150 * 150 for only 4000 r. It was decided to purchase this miracle and expand the bathroom to fit the size of the bath. Perhaps this is not the best solution, because the size of the bathroom is not large and it was possible to get by with a small bathroom or even a shower cabin, but the Khrushchev is already small, and with such a bathroom you can spend another hour like a master ...

Another important point is that this repair was not done by a professional and for the first time, therefore, we can conditionally say that such repairs are available to each of you, my dear reader!

Also pay attention to the pipes. Before the start of the repair, it is imperative to replace it with plastic, or better with metal-plastic, if this has not already been done. Pipes are the backbone of the bathroom and must be made and made well.

Not much, not a little, was spent on the entire repair - 60 thousand rubles.

So let's go!

This is what the bathroom looked like before renovation

The plan of what was taken as a basis - the main scheme of the entire repair

Now let's move on to the process itself, all in stages and with pictures. Let's start with the basics, i.e. floor - screed replacement. She was like this:

Of course, such a floor is no good and we need a good foundation - fill in:

The base of the floor is ready, move on to the base of the walls. We make a frame for the shelves:

The quality of my work is checked with a clean eye, or rather four, but how can we go without it?

Everything is checked and you can move on to another wall - tile with glue.

After the bathroom is installed on the frame. We continue to work with the floor and install a heat cable - we make a warm floor.

We fill the cable

All the basics are ready, now let's move on to the design. And we start as usual from the floor. It was decided to make pebbles on the floor.

After work, a check came again and approved the work with her seal. By the way, stones for the floor were bought at their place in Yekateinburg, by weight. It took 50 kg. Glued with glue Bergauf Ceramic Pro.

I install it directly above the washing machine. Saving space is our everything, especially with such a bathroom! All plumbing, including pipes and cords from the washer, are hidden in the frame.

Finishing off the rest of the little things called bathroom skirting boards:

Everything below the ceiling is almost ready, so you need to make the ceiling. The ceiling will be made of conventional plastic panels:

We leave access to the electric power supply of the main and electro-diode light in the ceiling, for this we leave the hole and close it with plastic:

We also install a curtain rod. Since the bathroom is semicircular, the cornice needs flexible, which was bought and installed:

Now we are finishing the shelves, which in fact caused much more problems than expected:

And the last, if I may say so, stroke - a cabinet, where a furniture board was used as a panel, treated with 6 layers of stain and 4 layers of varnish:

And this is the result of the whole repair - everyone was happy and yes - not a single cat was hurt 🙂

Some notes on the fact of operation:

  1. In the early days, I didn't really like the floor, it was ugly, although it was warm. I also thought about how his cleaning would go. In fact, I can say this: we were happy with this sex. The cable is always on and the stones are always warm. Vacuuming weekly and a couple of times a month with a rag is no problem. No floor mats needed. No fungi and mold were found after a year - do not forget about ventilation, it draws everything out.
  2. Water inlet, sewerage outlet and outlet are located behind the washing machine.
  3. Wall-hung toilet,.
  4. Prices: bath - 4000 rubles, installation - 5000 rubles, toilet - 1250 rubles, sink - 2000 rubles, tiles - 18000 rubles, ceiling plates - 200 rubles. I don't remember the rest ...
  5. The footage of the room: it was 1.6 x 1.6, now it was 2.3 x 1.6.

Constructive criticism:

  1. The bathroom takes up a lot of space. A regular shaped bathroom might have worked better, or a shower in general.
  2. Installation for shelves removes 20 cm from the wall - not very effective.
  3. The floor turned out to be an amateur, perhaps you need to fill it with a self-leveling floor - it should turn out beautifully.
  4. There is no heated towel rail - an unpleasant little thing.
  5. The faucet will milk out over the head of one of the places in the bathroom - this is not very convenient, although it has its advantages - when you bathe the tap at hand and you can even pour from it ... The place of the bathroom is not eaten, the faucet can be easily bent.

For dessert: how to train a cat to go to the toilet?

Remove the cat litter box and insert the liner into the toilet instead. The hole in the liner must be gradually enlarged until the liner is unnecessary:

Repairing is generally not an easy undertaking. In the case of small-sized housing, everything is complicated by the small size, and in old houses the problem of worn-out engineering networks is still added. Their replacement is also a concern of the owners, since it can take a long time to wait for the control campaign to change them. So the repair of a bathroom in a Khrushchev usually begins with the replacement of old risers.

A distinctive feature of Khrushchev apartments is the small size of all rooms. The bathroom and toilet are so small that even a minimal set - a bathtub + a sink - becomes only compact. Finding a place to install household appliances is a difficult task. The most popular solution is one that almost always affects the bath and toilet. One is made of two microscopic rooms - a combined bathroom. Due to the fact that the partition is removed, the area increases by almost a square meter, which is very significant in these conditions. In some options, it turns out to increase the space due to the corridor or the adjacent storage room. This renovation of a bathroom in Khrushchev is more difficult technically and it is more difficult to get permission for such a change, but anything is possible.

The procedure for repairing a bathroom in Khrushchev

If you decide to make a major overhaul of the bathroom in Khrushchev, the order of work will be almost identical with or without redevelopment. When redeveloping, the destruction of the partition, the transfer of the door, the laying of an unnecessary doorway are added. Further, everything is like a blueprint.

  • Remove all finishing materials. If the walls and ceiling are crooked (drops of more than 3 cm) or there are voids under the plaster (when tapping, the sound is dull, when pressing, movement is felt), they also knock the plaster.
  • Decide what kind of plumbing and household appliances will stand where, draw a plan in accordance with the scale. Draw on the plan the supply of electricity, water, sewage.
  • Lead to the bathroom.
  • Replace the risers of the water supply and sewerage system (agreement with the managing organization is required). Most often, old metal pipes are replaced with plastic ones. When replacing the water supply, use or.
  • If the water supply and sewerage systems are hidden, a small depth is made under them, since there will still be plaster on top. If not, the plumbing and sewer piping is done after finishing the walls.
  • Pour the leveling floor screed. It can be "rolled" into it (water in high-rise buildings is allowed only if there is individual heating, and then if the floors can withstand the load).
  • Wall and ceiling decoration. Here the sequence of work is different - it depends on the chosen method of decoration and plumbing. If, installation occurs at this stage. At the same time they do. When installing standard plumbing, it is installed at the end of finishing work, so that the floor-wall and ceiling are first put in order.
  • Plumbing and household appliances are being installed.

There are more and more options for finishing materials. For example, you can lay or on the bathroom floor. In this case, on top of the screed, another layer of self-leveling mixtures is needed to obtain a strong and even base, and the coating itself is laid last after all work is completed, but before installing plumbing. In general, the procedure for repairing a Khrushchev bathroom can vary significantly.

We increase the functionality

Renovation of a bathroom in Khrushchev is difficult not so much from the technical side as from the point of view of creating a beautiful, functional and comfortable room. The small size of the room is the main challenge. We have to look for non-standard solutions in the selection of equipment, plumbing and furniture.

Bath or shower

During the renovation of the bathroom in Khrushchev, they very often abandon the bath in favor of a shower cabin. This allows you to carve out a place in a small room for installing a washing machine. The most successful solution is a corner shower. In this case, a fairly decent piece of space is freed up in which you can put a washbasin or washing machine.

One of the options is to put a shower stall with a deep tray or simply install glass doors on the bathroom.

If you still want to lie in the bathroom at times, you can compromise with a deep tray. But it is worth remembering that high boards are not very convenient for daily use if there are small children or the elderly. Why are they worse than a regular bathroom? The fact that it will not be possible to fully rely on them is plastic, and it will not withstand heavy loads.

To make the bathroom in Khrushchev more comfortable - the sink can be installed above the washing machine

Until you get used to it, it is not very convenient to use the sink - it is installed a little higher than usual, but much more convenient than if you put an undersized one to save space. By the way, this is also a solution, but not the best one.

Design and design tricks

To make the bathroom renovation in Khrushchev not only functional, but also beautiful, we correctly select the finishing materials, their color and texture.

Using every centimeter is the challenge

Finishing materials and their color

Baths in the Khrushchevs are not only small, but also have low ceilings. Therefore, if suspended systems are installed, then only at a minimum distance, and this can be achieved by installing wall lamps or built-in ceiling lamps, but on LEDs that have a thickness of about 3-5 cm.This loss will be almost imperceptible, and the work will be much less than with and its subsequent putty.

It is not at all necessary to lay tiles on the walls. In this case, a smaller mosaic looks even better, since a large tile “makes” the room smaller. Another option for wall decoration in a small bathroom is painting and finishing with decorative plaster. Bathroom paints create an equally reliable coating, but this option costs less money, especially if you will putty the walls for painting yourself. there is also a moisture resistant one, and this type of finish looks modern.

In any case, the ceiling and walls in a small bathroom should be made in light colors, preferably with a slight gloss or a pearlescent, silk sheen. This finishing option makes the room visually more spacious. Most often these are shades of beige. A very unobtrusive and democratic color that can be revived with some details of brighter colors.

Another technique is that the walls are plain and only about in the middle is a wide strip of a brighter or more contrasting color. This technique "pushes" the walls, the room seems larger than it actually is.

The choice of plumbing

If, while renovating a bathroom in Khrushchev, you decide to replace the bathtub with a shower cabin, refuse to install a ready-made cabin. Even the smallest takes up a lot of space, and the plastic walls load up the space heavily. You physically feel the lack of space. Making a pallet of tiles and installing glass partitions is a more practical solution. Doors can be made sliding - there are a sufficient number of systems that can be easily installed by hand, but for craftsmen this is not a problem at all.

The colors are light, vertical stripes break the monotony, but the highlight of the interior is a bathroom and a sink of a non-standard shape. They perfectly complement each other and both are convenient to use

When choosing a sink, try to find the option that best fits into your interior. They come in different shapes, sizes, colors. There are wide and narrow, deep and shallow, angular - in the form of a sector, which are partially located above the bathroom. In general, there are many options. Yes, they are more expensive than the standard solution, but if possible, pick up a beautiful and convenient plumbing.

DIY bathroom repair in Khrushchev: photo report

Apartments in Khrushchevs are usually inherited or bought by young families. Their condition is usually deplorable, if repairs were made, it was 20 years ago. And in this apartment, the bathroom looks "not very".

Raw material

This renovation of the bathroom in Khrushchev is traditional - tiles on the floor and walls, the ceiling is made of PVC panels. It all starts with the removal of all finishing materials.

The next stage is leveling the walls with plaster (without beacons, since the walls are relatively flat). A screed is poured on the floor.

No perfect surface needed - tiles will fit

After the screed has set, the tiles are laid on the floor. We spread it diagonally. To make it easier, a plan was first drawn on the floor (with a pencil).

After laying the floor tiles, they took up the supply of water and sewage, installed the bathtub and connected it.

After that, they began to lay tiles on the walls. This is not always done. The second finishing option is to first lay out the wall with tiles, then put a bathtub, and close up the gap between the wall and the side. The second option is preferable, since you can replace the bathtub or put a shower stall at any time. In the first case, you will have to redo everything.

After the walls were finished, the frame for the suspended ceiling was assembled from plastic panels. Economy option, but later you can change to any more expensive one.

After that, there were only little things left - to hang a mirror, install and connect a sink with a built-in cabinet.

And the finishing touches are the stock near the bathtub, shelf and hooks.
