Why know how much timber is in 1 cube?

There are two reasons for this:

There is no construction site that would have done without the use of sawn timber.

Therefore, it becomes necessary to determine their exact number. You can calculate how many boards are in 1 cube using formulas, or you can use ready-made tables. These tables are called cubes.

What is cubic capacity

In general, this is the volume of a body, expressed in cubic measures.

Cubic capacity of lumber is the volume of lumber, expressed in cubic meters, otherwise - in cubic meters or simply in cubes.

Types of lumber

Obapol and croaker

For some reason, confusion arises with the definition of these materials: someone claims that they are one and the same, and someone claims that obapol is produced from a slab.

The requirements for the slab are standardized in accordance with OST 13-28-74. This means that the croaker is a full-fledged building material.

Unedged board

It is cut along two opposite surfaces called faces. The edges remain uncut, hence the name.

  • utility rooms;
  • temporary fences;
  • awnings.

Edged board

It differs from unedged one in that it is cut along the faces and edges.

It is used as:

  • roof battens;
  • lathing of the walls of frame houses;
  • racks and braces of frame houses;
  • stairs;
  • material for the manufacture of country furniture, etc.


Beams

This is sawn timber with a thickness of 100 mm or more with a difference in width and height of the section no more than two times. Usually the timber is square. The most used timber has a cross section of 100 × 100 mm and 150 × 150 mm.

Used by:

  • in the construction of frame houses in the form of racks and beams;
  • as a material for external and internal walls of wooden houses;
  • for the device of stairs, fences, etc.


Bar

It differs from a bar in that the maximum size of its section is 75 mm. Like timber, it is most often made with a square section.

How to calculate the number of boards in a cube

Edged board

As you know from the course of high school, the volume of a rectangular parallelepiped (and the edged board, timber and bar - this is it) is equal to the product of the lengths of its sides.

Calculated by formula 1:

where: V is the volume; L - length; b - width; h is the height (in our case, the thickness) of the board.

Having calculated the volume in this way, you can easily find the number of boards in a cube.

To do this, you need to divide the unit by the resulting number (formula 2):

where: N - number of pieces, 1 - 1 cub. m, V - volume.

It should not be forgotten that the dimensions of the edged materials are given in millimeters, therefore, they must be converted into meters before calculating.

Example

There is lumber with the following parameters:

25 × 150 × 6000, where 25 is the thickness; 150 - width; 6000 - length.

Let's calculate the cubic capacity of the board.

To do this, we convert millimeters to meters and substitute the obtained values ​​into formula 1:

V = 0.025 × 0.15 × 6 = 0.0225

Substitute the resulting number into formula 2:

N = 1 ÷ 0.0225 = 44.4

The result is always rounded to whole numbers by discarding the decimal part.

Thus, one cube contains 44 complete boards.


Unedged board

In this case, it is more difficult to solve the previous problem.

An unedged one has a large difference in width on opposite faces, therefore, when calculating the volume, the average width must be substituted in formula 1: these two widths are added and the resulting amount is divided in half.

The measurement result is rounded to 10 mm, fractions up to 5 mm are not taken into account, and fractions of 5 mm or more are considered 10 mm.

In addition, uncut edges prevent the board from being tightly packed, and various multipliers are used to calculate the exact volume.

The calculation method is not so much difficult as tedious, so it is easier to use the table from the next section.

Grooved board and lining

They differ from each other only in size, so the calculation method is the same for them.

They are mounted according to the tongue-and-groove system, as shown in the figure.

For the width b in this case, the so-called "working" or "visible" width is taken - the distance from the base of the tongue to the edge of the board (see Fig.). It is this size that should be substituted in formula 1.

Unedged material

Due to the wide range of sizes in length, thickness and width, it is impossible to calculate the exact amount of slab in one cube, so there is no cubature table for it.

Here is a table for converting the fold volume of the slab into a dense one.


In this case, we solve the inverse problem: we determine what the actual volume has a known amount of slab.

For this you need:

  1. Dismantle the croaker into a barked one (from which the thickest end, closest to the tree root, has been removed) and unbarked.
  2. Sort by length - up to 2 meters and more than 2 meters.
  3. Sort by thickness if necessary.
  4. Place in a bag alternating thin and thick ends.
  5. Calculate the fold volume of the bag.
  6. Select the appropriate factor from the table and determine the actual (dense) volume.
