Fashionable and modern: pear ottoman

Pear ottoman scheme

Further we will talk about how to sew an ottoman bag with your own hands - a very fashionable piece of furniture in modern interior decor. You might think, isn't it easier to buy such a corner ottoman in a store? Of course easier, but much more expensive! And it is for those who value their money and are at least a little versed in the field of cutting and sewing, this step-by-step instruction is dedicated.

To make a soft ottoman, a pear will need:

  • dense upholstery fabric - 320x150 mm;
  • fabric for the inner cover - 300x150 mm;
  • expanded polystyrene filler with the addition of holofiber - 0.5-1 cubic meters meter.;
  • pattern paper;
  • dense threads;
  • lightning - 60 cm.

The sizes of ottomans are determined mainly by the height of the people who will use them. It is better to be equal to the tallest member of the family, since people with smaller stature will in any case be very comfortable to sit on a large bag.

It is advisable to choose a fabric for upholstery that is dense to support the shape of the bag and is more resistant to wear. An excellent option would be tapestry, suede, jeans, capitonné, eco-leather, etc.

The inner cover of the pouf should be made of smooth, sliding, synthetic fabric. Thanks to this choice, the filler will freely move around the bag, taking the form of a person sitting in it.

Sewing products

The pouf pattern consists of six gussets for the bag itself and one lower part for its base.

Bean bag chair pattern

First, you need to make drawings of the required parts on paper, and then transfer them to the fabric for the inside and outside of the pouf.

Cutting is carried out taking into account seam allowances of about 1.5 cm.

The parts of the upholstery bag should be slightly larger than those intended for the padding, so it will be much easier for you to put the outer cover on the bag with the padding.

The second stage of work will be to sew all the fabric elements of the bag. First, sew the wedges together, and then proceed to the base. Do not forget to leave space for the zipper on the outer cover - the zipper will make it easier to clean the chair with a bag and will allow you to update the cover at any time. When both bags are ready, pour 2/3 of the amount of filler into the inner bag and carefully sew the remaining areas. Put on the decorative cover on top and close the zipper. The ottoman is ready!

The network has a huge number of options for how you can make a pouf with your own hands. Thanks to independent actions, you can save a significant amount of money and use scrap materials. The most popular methods are as follows:

  • seat made of plastic bottles;
  • bucket ottoman;
  • from the coil from the cable.

Pouf made of plastic bottles

The option from plastic bottles is quite popular, since they are in almost every home, and there will be no problems with the source material. In addition, the bottles are quite strong and durable. To make such an ottoman in the hallway, you will also need scotch tape, foam rubber, thick cardboard or plywood, and upholstery fabric.

It is important that the bottles are the same in size and shape as well as in density. Their number depends on how voluminous the pouf you want to make. But remember that the larger the surface area of the top, the stronger the seat.

Fold the bottles upside down and tape them tightly with duct tape. Using the obtained diameter, cut four identical circles out of cardboard or plywood. Two will go to the lid and two to the bottom. This will make the structure more durable. They also need to be attached with tape. This is the blank.

Bottles are connected to cartons with tape

Now you need to make it soft. To do this, cut out a sheet of foam rubber of the required size and wrap the side of the ottoman. For the top, cut out a circle. Foam rubber can be replaced with padding polyester. The thicker the layer, the better. Glue the material to the workpiece.

The surface of the resulting frame is covered with padding polyester or foam rubber

The seat can be trimmed from fabric, leatherette, or decorated with ruffles and applique. The knitted cover will make the ottoman unique. By using your imagination, you can create what you like best.

Another option is 2 large 10 liter plastic bottles. At one (bottom), you need to cut off the neck and insert the other into it. In the same way, cover with soft material and put on a cover.

Bucket ottoman

You can also make a pouf with your own hands from inventory that is no longer used for its intended purpose. This could be, for example, an old leaking bucket. The principle is the same. Turn the bucket upside down, wrap it on the sides with batting or padding polyester.

We glue the foam rubber to the sides

Place the matching round model on top. The soft material can be glued on for a more secure grip.

We glue the foam rubber to the lid

Remove the handles from the buckets in advance, otherwise they will get in the way.

Ready product

This requires only a little ingenuity, materials and tools at hand, and a suitable idea. Considering how much ready-made furniture costs in stores, you will understand how profitable it is to be able to do something with your own hands. In addition, you can be truly proud of your poufs, because you have invested not only work in them, but also your soul.

The pouf is a soft low stool. But the diminutive form of this word - ottoman - has taken root in the lexicon. Who decided to try to make upholstered furniture on their own, the ottoman is the easiest option. In this article, you will receive step-by-step instructions on how to make an ottoman.

Variants

Ottomans are made of various shapes and materials for external decoration. For a small hallway, you can make a pouf with a built-in cabinet for storing shoes, for a nursery - a soft ottoman.

The pouf looks very respectable as part of a furniture set made of leather. Photos of various ottomans, including handmade ones, are presented on this page.

Frameless ottoman

The idea of how to make an ottoman without spending a lot of money can be realized by making it from scrap materials. For example, a soft frameless ottoman made of fabric.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • Thick fabric
  • Zipper for fastening
  • Sewing machine
  • Whatman for patterns
  • Stuffing material

First, we make a pattern for the top and bottom of the pouf. On a drawing paper we draw a circle with a diameter of 35-40 cm. Do not forget about the seam allowances. Transfer to fabric, cut.

Next, we cut out a rectangle from the fabric equal to the circumference of the ottoman seat. For a diameter of 40 cm, the circumference is 126 cm. The width of the rectangle will be equal to the height of the finished ottoman. Don't forget about seam allowances.

Sew a rectangular pattern first to one circle, then to the second. We sew in a zipper. We stuff it tightly - the ottoman is ready.

The sizes given in the description are not dogma, choose them according to your taste. If there are no solid cuts of the fabric, sew the necessary parts from various pieces of fabric. The best version of a do-it-yourself patchwork ottoman will collect a lot of likes on social networks.

Ottoman "Pear"

"Pear" is another version of a frameless pouf. It uses polystyrene as a filler. Basically, it's a bag with some styrofoam inside. It is very comfortable to sit on such an armchair because it takes the shape of the body. Our site will tell you how to properly sew an ottoman bag from scrap materials with your own hands and what is needed for this.

Unlike the previous version, the pear ottoman is made of two bags. They are inserted into each other, and the filler is poured. If necessary, the top cover can be removed and washed.

The filler bag is made from a dense fabric such as jacquard. The outer cover is made from a variety of fabrics - imagine this.

For each cover you will need a fabric 1.5 m wide and 2.2-2.5 m long. You will need two zippers. For the inner bag - from 40 cm, for the outer one - 1 m.

The filler is polystyrene. It is a harmless, hypoallergenic filler. Polystyrene is sold in shops for frameless furniture.

If you make a pear ottoman according to the most budgetary option, then packaging foam can be used as a filler. Chunks of styrofoam crumble into small balls, but this is a troublesome job.

Styrofoam balls stick to everything, scatter from the slightest ripple of air. To put things in order in the room where the foam was crumbled, only a vacuum cleaner will help. One ottoman requires 120-140 liters of polystyrene.

Note!

Using a paper pattern, we make blanks for parts, sew bags. Then, pour the filler into the inner cover. We put on the top cover, fasten it. Ready.

Padding

Another way to make a new piece of upholstered furniture is to renew the upholstery of the old one. The choice of fabrics in stores selling furniture components is large. You can find information on how to beautifully sheathe an ottoman with your own hands on our website.

For the constriction, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Upholstery fabric
  • Foam rubber - may be needed if the old one began to collapse
  • Stapler, staples
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors, knife, measuring tape

We disassemble the old ottoman, remove the staples securing the fabric. We carefully unpick the old upholstery, it will serve as a template for a new pattern. In addition, the required amount of new fabric can be calculated from the old upholstery. We evaluate the condition of the foam rubber.

You can sew a new one according to the standards of the old upholstery and simply cover the ottoman. Or you can give the ottoman a new design, add folds, stitches, ties to the upholstery. This will require a little more fabric.

Replacement of foam rubber

If the old foam begins to deteriorate, then it is easy to replace it. This requires foam rubber of the appropriate thickness. Foam rubber with a density of 25-30 kg / m3 is better suited.

Note!

We draw the contour of the ottoman seat on the foam rubber and cut it out with a sharp knife. In furniture production, foam rubber is glued to a specialized glue. At home, you can use any toluene-free adhesive.

Ottoman with lid

A pouf with a lid is very convenient for storing things. For its self-production, you will need simple tools available in the arsenal of any home craftsman: jigsaw, drill, stapler. You can find diagrams and drawings of how to make an ottoman with a lid on our website.

Conclusion

It is very easy to make a soft ottoman at home. This does not require production facilities and expensive equipment. And the master classes on our site will help you with this.

Photos of ottomans with your own hands

Note!

In order for a new comfortable and original piece of furniture to appear in your home, it is not at all necessary to go to the store and spend a lot of money. Of course, it is better to buy a sofa or a bed, but such an interior detail as an ottoman is not difficult to do with your own hands.

In addition, if you decide to start making an ottoman, you can make it the way that suits you best in design.

It will be possible to select the desired shape, material and color. However, this is not the only advantage of homemade ottomans, since its production may not cost anything at all.

Soft poufs

The easiest way is to sew the most frameless soft ottoman. To make it, you only need a piece of fabric, stuffing material and a sewing machine.

Although if there is none, then it is quite possible to do without it by stitching all the details by hand. In order for your ottoman to be even and look beautiful, you need to make a pattern out of paper. It should be a square with triangles at the ends.

Using this template, you need to cut 8 identical parts from the fabric, not forgetting to leave seam allowances. Moreover, you can use both one piece of fabric and materials of different color and texture for each of the parts cut out according to the pattern.

After all the details are ready, you need to sew them together to form a ball-like shape. And in order for the ottoman to be stuffed, fold the top on the triangle of each of its parts inward.

Filler

In order for the pouf to keep its shape, a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber is well suited. But you can use other materials as well. Even fabric scraps are suitable as such.

To give the ottoman a finished look, you need to close the remaining hole by sewing on a circle of material with processed edges. If the edges of a round-shaped part are difficult for you to process, then it can be cut out in the shape of an octagon.

You can simplify the task and sew a pouf from two round parts, which will be the top and bottom of the product, and two rectangular parts, which are the sides of the pouf.

The height of the ottoman can be adjusted by the width of the rectangle. But the length should always be equal to half the length of the cut circle.

Sewing rectangular parts, stitching a circle to them and filling them with filler, you can get a round ottoman that will be soft and light. It will become not only a practical piece of furniture, but also a wonderful toy for children that cannot be hurt.

The cube-shaped ottoman is made in the same way. In this case, instead of two rectangular pieces and two circles, you will need 6 squares. It is not difficult to make a cube out of them. And if you sew a secret zipper into one of the edges, then you can change the filler and wash the cover.

Pouf made of plastic bottles

The ottoman can be made with your own hands and from plastic bottles. They, of course, must have the same volume.

To do this, the upper part of the bottle, where it begins to taper, needs to be cut off and the part remaining without a cap must be put on another bottle of the same type. Repeating this procedure with other bottles, we form a round structure with them.

So that the bottles do not deform and the pouf does not lose its shape, we fasten them with tape.

A little trick is that the bottle, which is inside other bottles of the same type, fastened with ordinary transparent tape, can be pasted over with double-sided and glued to the inside of the rest of the bottles.

Note!

In order to cover the upper and lower areas, it is necessary to cut a circle out of cardboard or chipboard according to the diameter of the connected bottles. We glue foam rubber to these circles, and wrap the pouf with it on the outside.

It remains only to sew a cover for the finished ottoman. You can sew a zipper around its top.

Such furniture will save filler. And if the cover is made of raincoat or water-repellent fabric, then such furniture can even be placed on the street.

In addition, as you can see in the photo, round ottomans, made without a frame and containing plastic bottles inside, practically do not differ in appearance.

Pouf with lid

In order to make a pouf similar to those sold in stores, you need carpentry skills and some tools. To begin with, it is worth cutting out 4 rectangular parts from chipboard, 33 cm wide and 40 cm long.

Note!

Use wooden blocks to hold them together. A square with a side of 40 cm is attached at the bottom.As a result, you should have a kind of box.

This workpiece from the inside with a construction stapler can be sheathed with material. The square, which will act as a cover, is also sheathed from below with material. And the top, before being covered with an upholstery fabric, is pasted over with foam rubber in order to give the ottoman softness.

Along the entire outer perimeter, the pouf, like the lid, is wrapped in foam rubber. And only then upholstery with material. Hinges are used to attach the lid to the cube. To give this piece of furniture mobility, you can attach furniture wheels to the bottom.

It is even easier to make an ottoman with a lid from a bucket, large saucepan or other dishes and utensils.

The main thing is that, like a pouf, they have a removable or opening lid. Then you just need to wrap the blank with foam rubber or other soft material and put a cover on it.

All homemade ottomans can perfectly fit not only into the interior of an apartment, but it is also a great option for a summer residence or outdoor recreation. After all, ottomans are lightweight, mobile due to their size and comfortable pieces of furniture.

Note!

They are very suitable for children's rooms, giving kids the opportunity to sit comfortably on them, or even build castles using poufs as cubes.

It is much more convenient to use such a piece of furniture to sit down at a low coffee table, because a homemade pouf can be made of any height.
