This is all they remembered, sitting at a cafe table near the playground, where they encountered by chance one sunny clear day. He had apple juice, she had a cigarette. I. At the basis of my research on the sexual life of girls, I based on the retrospection of adult women (the predominant age is 23-33 years), teachers and students, their recollections of the most vivid sexual impressions of early childhood: they had to write only about what they remember very well, moreover, starting from early childhood. This instruction was given in order to give the recollection the least difficult work ("only that which is very well remembered"), but at the same time to direct it towards the earliest possible childhood. Before giving recollections in writing in a classroom setting, I explained the enormous importance of recollections for science, in particular for sex education. Memories were written in front of my eyes, in general, about 1 hour, moreover, anonymously. After, on the basis of this material, I got some idea about the most vivid sexual impressions in the life of girls, I found the opportunity to find out a number of questions that I had about the sexual life of girls in 14 women of approximately the same profession and the same age as those who wrote memoirs. Only here the questions were about all aspects of girls' sexual life, which only I came across in the course of the study. Finally, I had the opportunity to use retrospection (in the form of oral answers to questions) of five women who led an extremely sexually promiscuous lifestyle (a lot of fleeting sexual intercourse both "because I liked it" and because of the possibility of an easy accidental extra work, although in there is no particular need for money, since legal earnings are not below average). It goes without saying that all the respondents gave memories only of their childhood.

P. In the material received, there was not a single memory that would relate with certainty to the age before the 4th year. The earliest memories were designated only approximately: "three or four years old," "when I was three or four years old," etc. Thus, one cannot use retrospection in relation to early childhood - preschool.

Does this amnesia only apply to early sexual life? Investigating the first memories of childhood, I found that in adults (aged 22-30), the maximum of these memories falls on the 4th and 5th years; the average age for these memories is the beginning of the 5th year (4.2 years). Thus, this amnesia is not sex-specific: it spans all life in early childhood. Here is how the 148 first childhood memories I collected were arranged over the years:

Of the 80 memories I collected of vivid sexual experiences in early childhood, only 27 were of preschool age. Of these, only 21 memories were dated, and almost all were approximately. Therefore, they can only be summarized in a fairly approximate table:


As you can see, the table is quite similar to the previous one. We can reasonably assert that sex life in early childhood is forgotten in much the same way as early childhood in general. Amnesia of early sexual life does not represent anything specific.

However, it is necessary to dwell on one circumstance. Yet about a quarter (26.5%) of adults gave their first childhood memories from the age of three, while no sexual memory was from such early childhood. How can this be explained? It seems to me, the insignificance of sexual impressions at this age.

Of the 190 first childhood memories I collected, only one, and even then with a stretch, can be considered sexual ("I was afraid that I was naked"). This indicates that the sexual impressions of the earliest childhood are weak. Memories of early sexual life are absent, most likely because, in fact, there is nothing in them that is so significant, vivid that it could cut through a lifetime. This is the most plausible assumption. The hypothesis of special sexual amnesia in relation to a given age is superfluous: there is no need for it, and it is not substantiated by anything.

Observable external manifestations of girls' sexuality in early childhood are masturbation and (arguably) unusual manifestations of tenderness. We have no reason to suppose the sexual nature of these manifestations of affection, except for a dubious analogy with the experiences of adults in similar positions. Thus, only masturbation is, apparently, an indisputable manifestation of sexuality in the earliest childhood. But even here the question even arises of what is meant in this case by sexuality.

I have not had the opportunity to observe girls 0-3 years old in such a number and so thoroughly that I could draw any conclusions about the prevalence of masturbation among them. In general, all the statements on this issue so far available must be considered unfounded, since there is no description of how many children the observations were made on and how these observations were organized. Therefore, it is not known what percentage of children masturbate in their earliest childhood. But regardless of this, in the event that an infant or baby masturbates, their masturbation in its psychological nature cannot but differ from the masturbation of older children. In it, for example, there are no masturbatory ideas, that is, masturbatory dreams.

In psychological terms, masturbation in the earliest childhood is devoid of heterotropic erotic ideation, devoid of representations directed to any sexual stimulus. It is simply a pleasure manipulation of your genitals. This early masturbation is still so elementary that it has no psychological experiences, except for simple pleasure. If we add to this that the infant or baby does not yet have, at least to a large extent, the complex and intense experiences of masturbation as a forbidden, dangerous, conspiracy act, then it becomes quite understandable why the earliest childhood does not give vivid sexual impressions and why while about a quarter of adults give their first childhood memories before age 3, the earliest sexual memories are after age 3.

III. Only a third of the women surveyed wrote about their sexual experiences in preschool childhood. Thus, approximately two-thirds of women denied having sex drive at this time. This denial can be explained either by forgetfulness, or hypocrisy, or in fact it was so. In my work "Das Problem der ersten Kindheitserinnerung" ("Arch. Fd ges. Psychologies 1929), I have established that the first memory of childhood refers to an average of 4.2 years in adults. The end of preschool childhood, age 5-7 years, is already relatively Therefore, the aforementioned denial is difficult to explain by oblivion, unless one makes the assumption that early sexual experiences are especially strongly forgotten. they only developed attraction during puberty, during adolescence.It is unlikely to assume that two-thirds of women could forget so much all their sexual experiences before adolescence, if these experiences really were. people talk about their sex life. But I am not inclined to this assumption in this case. that anonymity was firmly guaranteed and they wrote about their distant past, moreover, about childhood, with a great awareness of the importance of truthful messages, the very ones who denied sexual attraction in their early childhood, at the same time did not hesitate to write about themselves in their messages at a later age, very intimate and even odious details. It is difficult to admit that a woman who wrote so frankly would suddenly show insincerity in hiding her earlier, preschool sex life. Therefore, I am inclined to show gullibility and think that it is true that only a third of the women surveyed had a sexual desire awakened in preschool childhood.

More precisely, "it was awakened." In all these women, without exception, sexual desire was awakened by external very strong erotic stimuli. These stimuli were usually of the following two kinds: either the little girl was the subject of sexual assault (more often), or (more rarely) she witnessed coitus "a.

Cases where a little girl has been the subject of sexual assault, in turn, can be divided into several types. Most often it was the examination of her genitals by (usually older) boys and drawing her by them (including sometimes brothers) in a sexual game or even in something like sexual intercourse. Sometimes it was training her masturbation friends and girls-nannies. Finally, sometimes it was sexual stimulation by adult men, usually through kissing and humorous flirting, in some cases, direct and rough sexual assault. In two cases, the impetus was paintings with naked male bodies and pornographic paintings.

In cases where a little girl's sexual desire was awakened by the fact that she witnessed coitus "a, it was usually the coitus of her parents. In several cases it was the coitus of animals, but the latter sexually stimulated only under special conditions, which will be discussed below.

Thus, the environment plays an extremely important role in awakening the sexual desire in a little girl. At the same time, the awakening external stimulus is usually grossly primitive and at the same time strongly erotic stimulus. In its primitiveness, it seems to correspond to the primitive psychology of a little girl. Human love with its complex and muddy manifestations outside of her attention, she passes, without noticing, past her. A different matter - the above stimuli related to the primitive, so to speak, animal side of sexual life: they cannot be overlooked; even a child cannot pass them by, especially since they are often directed just at him. It is quite natural that a primitive creature, such as a little girl, is aroused precisely by primitive sexual stimuli.

And at the same time, as we emphasized, these are highly powerful stimuli: erotic manipulation of the girl's genitals, observation of coitus, etc. Therefore, it is not surprising that they are a powerful impetus for the awakening of sexual desire.

So - from the outside, by a primitive and at the same time very strongly erotic stimulus - the sexual desire of a little girl awakens. If this is true, then it is understandable why in these early years it turned out to be awakened in only a third of the women surveyed. It's about the environment: she awakens sex drive at this age. This happens mainly due to either the sexual aggressiveness of comrades and adults, or due to careless behavior with a child. It is possible that in a sexually more spoiled environment and with less careful caregivers, more than a third of girls will have aroused sexual desire. On the other hand, it is likely that in a more perfect environment, sex drive at an early age will not wake up at all.

It is interesting that none of the 93 women interviewed confirmed the opinion widespread in modern psychology about the erotic effect of the problem of a person's birth on a child. Not content with this, I conducted an additional special survey on this issue of 158 women and got the same result. The question of the birth of a person arises in a child most often at the age of 4-6 years and is often one of a series of questions about the genesis of various things: "from somewhere?" According to my materials, it took on an erotic character only when it was used (most often by girlfriends) for scabrous further conversations about coitus "e.

Depending on what stimulus aroused the little girl's sexual desire, the latter develops in one way or another. As already mentioned, the most common incentive is sexual assault by boys, usually manifested in looking at the girl's genitals or in sexual play. Sometimes, having gone through such a passive exhibitionism, a girl later becomes an active exhibitionist, that is, she herself begins to invite boys to look at her genitals. When the kindergarten teachers told me about the manifestations of sexuality in babies they had noticed, their messages almost entirely (if it was not about masturbation) related to the exhibitionism of girls and the spying of boys, and the girl sometimes found herself in an active role, that is, offering.

The case does not always end with exhibitionism. From the object of examination, the girl sometimes becomes the object of sexual play and coitus-like actions. Here is one example: "The girls lifted their dresses, and the boys ran up with penis in their hands and touched their naked bodies."

All this, judging by the reports, does not pass without leaving a trace for the little girl, but, as a rule, has an outcome in masturbation with corresponding sexual dreams. So, the sexual attraction awakened by the environment finds itself in the future satisfaction either in masturbation, or, on occasion, in exhibitionistic (passive or active) or coitus-like actions. The girl, in reality or (much more often) in masturbatory dreams, begins to strive for this. But the matter is not limited to this. Some of the materials definitely say that the image of the seducer-boy is engraved in the memory as being liked and plays a role later in the formation of love taste: "And later, when I became an adult, I liked men with such eyes."

The sexual story of a little girl affects her future life so deeply.

As a rule, in these cases, the seducers were somewhat older boys. Sometimes a brother appears among them in the role of a pimp, or in the role of an active partner.

While working on a study I have not yet published on jealousy in adults, I came across several cases of my sister's jealousy of her brother: either the sister ardently rebelles against her brother's marriage, insisting on his bachelorhood, then she ardently hates her brother's wife and gives him real scenes of jealousy, then she begins to feel abnormally strong, even to the point of illness, yearning due to the marriage of his brother, etc. Now, while studying the development of sexual desire in boys and girls, I again came across the facts of sexual relations between brother and sister. True, in general, there are few such cases, but still in my collection 6 out of 93 indicated sexual relations with brothers during preschool childhood. These sexual relations arise either as in cases with other boys (exhibitionism - passive and active; sexual games), or as a result of a common bed: "The cold prompted to cuddle up to each other, it was very pleasant", there was a desire for bodily rapprochement, which in the form friction and was carried out in solitude (initiator - brother). The romance of brother and sister, therefore, must find its place, in particular, in psychoanalysis.

But a little girl can be sexually stimulated by adult men as well. Here is a typical story: "I was visiting my uncle. Sometimes he took me in his arms and kissed me. I liked his lips, bright and soft. The sensation was pleasant, and I deliberately began to approach him so that he would kiss me. After that I liked men of the same kind. type - with bright lips and brunettes. " This kind of sexual stimulation usually turns out to be not strong enough to completely awaken the girl's sexual desire: according to my materials, it does not result in masturbation, masturbation dreams, etc. And nevertheless, the influence can still be very deep, affecting the formation of love taste during the further sexual life of even an adult woman.

Probably, the direct encroachment of a little girl by adult men has a completely opposite effect. I only say "probably" because I think I have no right to generalize everything based on the two cases in my collection. In both of these cases, the reaction of the girl under the influence of pain and strong fear is sharply negative, moreover, it persists in adulthood. In the first case (rape), “I felt a hell of a pain ... I was very afraid of him. in the second case (lecherous actions) “I felt that this was not an easy caress. I was very unpleasant and very scared. Then I was afraid of this person and hated him.

In cases where a little girl's sexual desire is awakened by the fact that she witnessed coitus "a, it was usually the coitus of her parents. The species of coitus" a, this powerful sexual stimulant, acting, moreover, in this case in a very intriguing environment, eroticizes the little girl, igniting her with sexual feelings and longing. As a rule, the awakened sexual desire finds itself in the future outcome in masturbation.

We have already seen how the stimulus that awakens the sexual desire of a little girl usually has a double effect, one in the present, usually developing masturbation with corresponding masturbatory dreams, and the other in the future, influencing the love taste and character of an adult woman's sexual desire. In this case, this second action is apparently negative. "I do not like sexual intercourse, despite my 24 years, despite the fact that I have been waiting for this sexual intercourse for so long," women in this category. Perhaps the resulting amalgam of sexual excitement and fright, and the fact that the parents produce coitus, subsequently determine the association with an unpleasant feeling.

Sometimes the impetus for the awakening of the sexual desire of a little girl is the species coitus "a animals. But the consequences, judging by my materials, are left not so much by the impression of the seen coitus" a, but rather by the subsequent "explanations". These consequences can be divided into two groups: “I later learned the meaning from my peers. This gave me a reason to observe animals and people. I learned that my parents live like animals. 23 years old. " Overly simplified "biologization", or rather "zoologization", of human sexual relations linked sexual feelings with disgust. But there is also another situation: “The seen sexual intercourse of horses aroused in me an extraordinary curiosity. To satisfy it, I turned with the appropriate question to my mother. Mechnikov once pointed out * as one of the manifestations of the disharmony of nature, the fact that sexual desire awakens much earlier than puberty. In a large number of cases, this is the case. But this, judging on the basis of our material, is far from a universal phenomenon, and, at least for girls, this is not always the case. Sex drive awakens before puberty when it is awakened. In my material, which was given by ordinary normal women, the little girl's sex drive was always of exogenous origin. The environment plays a decisive role here. In this case, the erotic stimulus must satisfy two conditions: firstly, it must be very strong (operating with the girl's sexual organ, coitus, etc.), and, secondly, it must be relatively elementary, so to speak, roughly primitive corresponding to the primitive psychology of a little girl. The awakening of sexual desire is manifested in the future either in masturbation with corresponding dreams, or in sexual intercourse with boys, and the latter is reduced to showing the genitals, coit-like actions, etc. to a large extent, her positive or negative attitude towards sexual intercourse, depending on whether the initial stimuli were pleasant or, on the contrary, unpleasant, for example, frightening, painful, etc. Even the love taste of an adult woman is influenced by these early first impressions.

Interestingly, in no case was it indicated that masturbation in itself led to a search for sexual intimacy, sexual dreams, etc. But in a number of cases it was indicated on the contrary, as sexual arousal caused by an external stimulus led to engaging in masturbation.

Far from trying to give a more complete psychological analysis of masturbation, since I have no material for this, I will dwell on only one question. Already in early childhood, we sometimes observe in babies manipulation of the organs of their body: this manipulation, as pleasant, is subsequently repeated deliberately. So the assumption arises (so far only as a hypothesis) that this earliest type of masturbation, which we will conditionally call simple manipulative masturbation, is associated only with an elementary sense of pleasure, but is completely devoid of sexual representations. The next type of masturbation in time is the one that can be conventionally called representing masturbation, when manipulation is associated with certain erotic dreams. This representing masturbation is no longer just mechanical, but psychological in origin and has a more complex content. Being different in origin and more consistent with the more complex psychology of the growing girl, it can be assumed that over time it replaces simple manipulative masturbation, cases of which can still be observed sometimes in young preschoolers, especially those who are deprived of upbringing: for example, in the countryside it is not so rare to see 3-4-year-old children "playing" with their genitals. This representative masturbation, characteristic of all ages except [infant], takes its nourishing dreams initially from an external awakening stimulus, and subsequent dreams, however varied they may be, often go back to this stimulus as their primary source.

IV. Let us skip now, for reasons that will become clear a little later, the early school age, the period of changing teeth, and dwell on a teenage girl who is in puberty. Her sexual psychology is strongly opposed to the sexual psychology of a little girl. Let us identify from the very beginning what is specific for a given age.

Reading girls' diaries relatively quickly picks up their peculiar pattern. [Namely,] sometimes in some recordings dissatisfaction, dissatisfaction with everyone around, heartfelt melancholy and some not very definite aspiration begin to appear very strongly. The pattern is that when such records begin to appear, there is no doubt that soon after this time other records will appear - records of love. Dissatisfaction, melancholy, longing are, as it were, a kind of introduction to the subsequent love story. This romance itself with this or that "him" does not unfold immediately either: the desire for love precedes love itself, and "he" is usually not immediately available, but is often even sought after.

Thus, a definite fall in love with a particular subject is preceded by a more or less long-term state, which could be called "being in a state of readiness to fall in love." It turns out something very similar to the process of maturation: the girl is gradually more and more ripe for falling in love. This process, as already mentioned, begins with discontent, dissatisfaction, heartfelt anguish, longing and gradually turns into a more or less intense search for "him."

External stimuli play, of course, a role, but different from that of a little girl. The little girl (let such a stereotyped image be forgiven) is a very immature bud, which unfolds a strong external influence, sometimes very rudely. A teenage girl is almost ready to bloom, and here an external stimulus (usually courtship) only awakens a mood that is already ready for awakening. The external stimulus here is no longer a strong and rough impetus, but a revealer, a developer. Therefore, it can be insignificant in its strength. There is no lack of guidance in my materials, how sometimes a small occasion, for example a kissing scene in a movie, a scene in a novel I read, powerfully awakens the strongest love emotion. Characteristically and psychologically easily explainable is the expression that is often found in the materials: "Here for the first time I felt like a woman." For example: "A young man began to pay attention to me - then I felt like a woman for the first time" or "Once he kissed me. I still remember this kiss. It left a strong impression. I then felt like a woman for the first time, and I his kiss was very pleasant. " Precisely because the girl has already matured sexually, a relatively weak erotic stimulus itself acts on her so powerfully: "I was 14-15 years old, when one unfamiliar strong man told me that I was already becoming a girl, that he has long drawn to me attention, and at the same time firmly shook my hand above the elbow, took my arm. I shivered, wanted to be indignant, but not indignant. I was incredibly hot, pleasant and a little ashamed. "

At preschool age, sexual desire is not awakened in everyone, and in those in whom it awakens at this age, this happens under the influence of a very strong stimulus in an erotic respect. On the contrary, at the age of puberty, all women have a sexual desire, and an external stimulus plays here only the role of a revealer of what is already ripe, and therefore in itself may be weak, but its effect will still be strong. This gives us the right to assert that Mechnikov's disharmony between puberty and sexual attraction, existing before puberty, is not an eternal law of nature, but only the law of an imperfect environment, accidentally or deliberately prematurely eroticizing a little girl; in a more perfect environment, this disharmony may not exist, and in such an environment, sexual desire can develop simultaneously with puberty. Even in the materials I have, 23 out of 93 [women] deny in their recollections that they have any noticeable manifestations of sexual desire before puberty. This should be recognized as the norm in the sense that this is how things happen under unfavorable conditions.

But if this is the norm, then it should be recognized as normal just that type of sexual desire, which is specific in this case. It is love that is such a type of sexual attraction, while in a little girl, sexual attraction appears primarily in a grossly sensual form.

Dedicating my other article to the psychology of love *, in this article I will only briefly note the main points of this psychology; moreover, only [insofar as] we are talking about a young girl. The first preliminary moment is already known to us: this is the period of dissatisfaction, heartfelt melancholy, languor preceding falling in love. Let's call this stage the stage of the emergence of the need for love. It is psychologically characterized by a number of painful experiences, localized mainly in the heart region. This moment is followed relatively soon by the second moment, when the girl becomes very attentive to what is related to love, and is highly sensitive to the corresponding stimuli. Let's call it a little awkwardly the stage of love sensitization. As far as could be seen from memories and diaries, this stage usually ends with several relatively light hobbies, sometimes quite insignificant, and through them passes into the next stage - falling in love, which I would prefer to call the stage of love eros, since for this stage the most characteristic is constant and a very strong desire for a loved one. Here are the lines typical of this stage of one recollection: “I was looking for his meeting, I was all burning with this desire, but when we met, I was lost, it seemed to me that the whole world was looking at me. All thoughts were focused only on him, I didn’t do science could. " The so-called first love has been described so many times in the literature that we can completely limit ourselves to just one typical example, especially since in general the memories of this among different subjects are quite similar: “I was 14-15 years old when I liked my brother's friend. I only wanted him to come to us to play together, and most importantly, that he did not pay more attention to any of the girls than to me.I was especially bored in the evenings in the summer (the situation was also favorable - a nice shady courtyard, moonlit nights) , I had no desire to play with the girls. The love of a young girl either stops at this stage - the stage of love eros, love aspiration, or passes into the next - last - stage: the stage of love communication, sexual intimacy, that is, into an actual marriage relationship. In this case (and such cases, when a woman is eroticized before puberty, among my subjects 2/3 of all cases) at the age of puberty, a kind of dualism is quite often obtained: the love of a young girl and her primitive rough sexual life, manifested most often in representing masturbation , form, as it were, two separate rows. On the one hand, she loves and goes through the rather stereotyped stages of girlish love; on the other hand, she masturbates and presents grossly sensual scenes. This kind of dualism sometimes proceeds peacefully: both rows do not mix, so to speak, they coexist peacefully with each other. But such a peaceful dualism is not always the case. In some cases, on the contrary, one row begins to influence the other. In my materials, the influence of the primitive sexual series on the love one was most often observed. This influence affects both the rate of development of the love process and the very nature of love. Falling in love, under appropriate conditions, tends at a fast pace to the final stage - sexual intimacy, and in love experiences, the sensual moment comes to the fore both in love dreams and in ways of attracting a love subject to oneself. On the contrary, much less often the influence of the love series on the primitive sexual one was observed. As far as could be traced, this influence was manifested in the fact that the engagement in masturbation either weakened or was accompanied by a stronger struggle against the craving for masturbation, an increase in negative emotional attitudes towards it, etc. ], so that the beloved subject somehow turns out to be the subject of masturbatory dreams.

The period of change of teeth is intermediate between milk-toothed childhood and the stage of puberty. As such, it does not contain anything brightly specific. Sexual attraction at this age has one of the following three destinies: either it has not yet awakened in a noticeable way, or it manifests itself in a grossly primitive form, or, finally, it is early love. The girl of early school age has already grown up enough, and therefore they are more afraid of her, more shy; she has fewer occasions to witness rough erotic scenes. As if less often she is also the object of gross sexual assault. As a result, sex drive, where it is awakened, usually manifests itself only in the form of representative masturbation. It is this representative masturbation that is typical masturbation for a given age. At the same time, judging by the available materials, at this age the very technique of masturbation diversifies.

However, at this age, the erotic influence of the children's company, primarily of girlfriends, is stronger. In the same way, strongly erotic external stimuli at this age activate the girl much more. But such cases are still not common at this age. It is characteristic in cases where the sex drive is awakened, or the aforementioned representing masturbation, or love and kissing. Let us dwell on the analysis of this early love (according to our materials, approximately 1/4 of all the first loves fall at the age of changing teeth, the rest - at the age of puberty), which develops, probably as a result of early puberty.

Most often, the subject of love is a boy. The novel usually begins with friendship: "I was very friendly with one boy, I missed him when he was not. We often ran away together, and I remember that I really liked to sit with him somewhere in a secluded corner." But often the romance of a little schoolgirl takes place in the form of "teasing" in order to attract attention to herself. For example: "I often fought, especially with one that I liked, tried to tease him, push and thus make him pay attention to me. The last resort was to take off my cap from my head and run away, and then he would catch me. caught. " In our schools, teachers often pay attention in groups where children 11-13 years old study, to cases of such "teasing" of boys by girls (and vice versa - "harassment" of boys) and consider them "bad relations" between boys and girls. It was not uncommon for teachers to turn to me for advice about these "bad relationships." We now see that this almost amorous relationship can hardly be considered bad.

If in preschool childhood there is no love at all, and in girls' years its culmination in the absence of brakes is sexual intercourse, then at the age of changing teeth, the culminating point of early love is a kiss. This is usually characterized by an ambivalent reaction: on the one hand, "I wanted to scream and hit him," shame and depression, and on the other, "it was pleasant," delight, excitement. The mentioned cases of homosexuality at this age fall sharply into two completely different groups. The first group - crudely primitive sexual actions between girls, consisting mostly in the reproduction of seen or heard coitus "a. This is a kind of experimentation, and it is characteristic that in no case did I come across indications of the duration of such activities. This gives reason to bring such experimentation closer together. with such phenomena as mutual examination of the genitals, with the name of their special names or teaching a friend to masturbate. It is not clear to me whether all this can be attributed to homosexuality. I have no facts indicating that this served to the further development of homosexuality.

The situation is completely different with another group of cases where homosexuality is already beyond doubt. All these cases represent a little schoolgirl falling in love with a woman, and in my materials this woman has always been an adult and almost always (except for two cases) a girl's teacher, and the fall in love itself, or rather the reason for it, is eccentric, extraordinary. So, in one case, a girl falls in love with a pregnant teacher, moreover, so that "I saw her off and met and, I confess, was ready to kiss the hem of her clothes"; in another case, the girl was struck by the lush breasts and arms of a naked teacher she had accidentally seen, etc. At the next age (the stage of puberty), cases of homosexual love become relatively frequent (much more often than at any other age of life), but the object falling in love here is most often a friend.

Vi. In general, two types of development of sexual desire can be distinguished - premature and suo tempore *. Premature development occurs exclusively under the influence of the external environment. This environment is far from indifferent in this regard to the little girl. Often she is aggressive towards the girl: she is encouraged to exhibitionism and sexual play by older boys, she is corrupted by her friends, and finally, sometimes she is aroused sexually, consciously or unconsciously, by adult men. But even where the environment is not sexually aggressive towards the child, she is sometimes careless with him, shameless, making the little girl a witness to the most erotic scenes. Where we have a premature awakening of sexual desire in a girl, the cause should be sought primarily in external stimuli, and not in the problematic "hypersexual constitution". These stimuli are usually very real and relatively easy to detect, while the notorious constitution is still only a hypothesis, hypothetical X. Even masturbation at this age, which is very different from the simple manipulative masturbation of babies, has a certain external stimulus from the genetic basis of its dreams.

This premature development of sex drive has a number of harmful psychological consequences, not to mention physical harm. In the event that the stimulus-awakening aroused a negative emotion, subsequently develop sexual phobias, aversion to sexual intercourse, etc. If, on the contrary, this stimulus was pleasant, the craving for premature sexual intercourse develops, so to speak, becomes primitive, becomes more primitive , later on, more elementary love, thereby losing its complex cultural content. Thus, the issue of organizing a sexually healthy environment for a child is an acute issue.

In the event that this environment does not prematurely eroticize the girl, her sexual desire awakens endogenously at the age of puberty, moreover, not in grossly primitive forms of elementary sexual desire, but in the form of love. At first, it develops vaguely at first, then a more clearly perceived need for love. This need entails a little later the search for the object of love and, upon finding it, falling in love. The environment plays an incomparably lesser role here. Her main role here is not an awakener, since the need for love awakens mainly due to internal reasons. But this does not mean that her role here is generally insignificant. It influences partly on the formation of love taste, more precisely, on its individual characteristics. In addition, it plays the role of a brake on the passage of love through the above stages, especially the last two. By appropriately organizing the environment, we can influence in one way or another both the course of love and the choice of the object of love.

Vii. An analysis of the girl's most vivid sexual impressions makes it possible to form, to a certain extent, an idea of ​​the development of child sexuality.

Once Metchnikov considered one of the types of disharmony in nature to be disharmony between puberty and a long before awakening sexual desire. He considers this disharmony as a law of nature. In fact, there is no such law of nature: in almost a third of the women I surveyed, sexual desire was awakened only during puberty.

Normally, sexual desire awakens only during puberty. We have this normal situation in a number of cases. But just as cases of perfectly healthy people are not frequent, so these normal cases are also not frequent. There are more of them in sexually healthy environments and few in sexually inauspicious environments. Therefore, the frequency of these cases varies greatly depending on the conditions of the girl's upbringing - the degree of her inactivity, living conditions, behavior with her and with her, the conditions of her bedroom, etc. In some conditions, all 100% of girls in preschool age may already have sexual a life. But it is quite conceivable that in other conditions such girls could be 0%.

It is abnormal if sexual activity (including sexual desire) appears before puberty. "Abnormal" means that this only happens under the influence of extraordinary external stimuli or in cases subject to psychopathology. Very strong erotic stimuli are needed in order for a young preschooler to awaken sexual desire. In the vast majority of girls' cases, this is either a direct effect (in one form or another) on their genitals, or a sharply erotic scene. The stimulus is strong in an erotic sense, but primitive.

Sexually, the preschool girl is still quite primitive, both because of her sexual immaturity and because of her general underdevelopment. Therefore, it is excited only by strong and primitive stimuli. She reacts primitively to these stimuli - masturbation or heteroerotic acts.

In contrast to masturbation in the earliest childhood, masturbation in preschool age is more difficult from a psychological point of view. The psychological scheme of early childhood masturbation: masturbation + pleasure. It is just a pleasant procedure, at first, in all likelihood, of peripheral origin, and then gradually turning into a pleasant habit. However, I shy away from solving the question of how accustomed masturbation is at this age, that is, it is already becoming a habit, since I do not have sufficient factual material. Perhaps it is possible, in the form of a hypothesis to be tested, to assume that at this age the habit of masturbation is not yet stable. The grounds for such a hypothesis: 1) this age is generally characterized by a comparative instability of habits (the child easily weaning), 2) an external stimulus and therefore easier to eliminate.

The psychological scheme of masturbation in preschool age turns out to be different: erotic performance + masturbation = pleasure. Here the stimulus is already central (performance). As long as this performance is alive (and it is now and then revived by the memory, now and then it is reproduced), there will be an incentive to masturbate. If masturbation in the earliest childhood was prompted by an elementary feeling, a simple pleasure from masturbation, and the object of influence was the external genital organs, then in preschool age the erotic imagination comes to the fore and the genitals are first excited from the inside under the influence of this imagination. Thus, here sexual arousal is no longer peripheral, but of central origin. Hence the conclusion: if in the earliest childhood measures against masturbation are exclusively of a physical nature, then at preschool age these measures alone are not enough, measures of a psychological nature are also needed.

Where the matter is not limited only to masturbation, there are, usually in the absence of supervision and at the initiative of older children, and other sexual acts. Most often this is either imitation in one form or another of sexual intercourse, or passive exhibitionism. These imitations are usually a kind of sexual imitative play, sometimes rather (but not very) complex dramatization (for example, the famous sex games of "dad" and "mom"). The role of imitation is obvious here. Passive exhibitionism is what I call a girl showing her genitals at the request of her playmates (for example, the famous sexual game of "doctor"). Thus, sexual responses at this age are primitive and grossly sensual. This is easily explained by the fact that the psychology of a preschool girl is still quite primitive in general.

The initial stimulus of child sexuality at this age is external. In the future, this sexuality is supported either by the feeling of pleasure experienced as a result of the corresponding procedures, or also by imagination and memory. But what psychological experiences, on the contrary, prevent the development of sexual behavior at this age? Almost from the very beginning, fear is added to the sexual experiences of a little girl, then when she herself or people close to her become the subject of rough sexual attacks, then when she is afraid of discovering forbidden sexual games. This is either the fear of an attack, which she can sometimes imagine as a sexual attack on her or people close to her, or the fear of being caught during a forbidden action. Somewhat later, as the social behavior and consciousness of the little girl develops, shame begins to come first, then disgust, a complex feeling, the main component of which, according to Ben *, is fear and hatred. Fear of an encroachment on her body, fear of social repression (punishment, condemnation, etc.), and sometimes hatred of the invader - these are, judging by the material I have, those basic experiences that paralyze sexual pleasure at a given age. If we define fear as an emotional reaction to an impending trouble, and hatred as an emotional attitude of struggle with the source of trouble, then from a genetic point of view, such an evolution of sexuality can be represented as a paralysis of sexual pleasure by anticipating the associated troubles. An amalgam of sexual arousal and fear is common at this age.

Although the material at my disposal is insufficient for a completely categorical statement, it nevertheless gives some reason to suppose that the sexuality of a little girl, aroused from the outside by a strong erotic stimulus, to a certain extent subsides if it is not supported by appropriate stimuli from outside. If I may put it that way, the child begins to forget this impression, the memory of it weakens and already ceases to eroticize the child. In this case, sexual experiences turn out to be a transient episode in the life of a preschool girl: the erotic environment stimulated her, but then, if there is no such influence of the environment, the girl begins to live a life normal for a given age. According to the testimony of some of the subjects, even the masturbation that had arisen stopped in them.

In this case, even that active "search" for an erotic stimulus, a sexual object, which is characteristic of a later age, is not observed. This "seeking" usually occurs only in the first time after the primary stimulus: the child seeks not to sleep and to spy on the parents' sexual intercourse in the common bedroom, starts sexual games, etc. But if the environment no longer provides nutrient material for a considerable time, such active attempts seem to freeze.

But unfortunately, there are, of course, such cases when the environment gives the child the opportunity to have sexual stimuli and receive appropriate satisfaction. Then sexual experiences become habitual, more or less constant, moreover, in an elementary sensory form. It is characteristic that all the women interviewed by me at the beginning of this article, leading a sexually promiscuous lifestyle, had just such a preschool childhood.

VIII. We have already shown above that primary school age is sexually transitional in the sense that we find here either primitive sensory manifestations of sexuality, as in preschoolers, or falling in love, similar to adolescence. In the second case, we have, as it were, an early, premature awakening of love.

I chose 10 very intellectually developed women, moreover, those who, according to them, were intellectually superior to their peers in childhood, and asked about the time of their first love. I did the same for 10 women who are intellectually dumb. In my inquiries, I carefully emphasized that this is about falling in love, and not about simple sexual intercourse. As a result, it turned out that the first love took place in pre-adolescence in 6 women of the first category and only in one - the second category. Based on this, it can be assumed that falling in love, as a relatively complex experience, presupposes a certain degree of mental development, but the latter is, of course, not the only condition. On the other hand, in my little material, I did not find any noticeable connection between primitive-sensual sexuality in primary school age and mental development. Often this sexuality was a continuation of similar sexuality in preschool years.

The comparatively complex erotica of love and kissing, characteristic of adolescence and sometimes of prepubertal childhood, is apparently not connected by a continuous thread of development with the primitive-sensual sexuality of a young age. In ontogenetic evolution, the roots of love branch out in more complex phenomena than primitive sexual sensibility. At the same time, as the sexuality of a little girl is usually the product of erotic influences from the environment, love is, rather, a product of maturation, and it is not the environment that plays the main role here: if for a little girl a strong sexual impression usually bursts in from the outside, as it were, impromptu completely unprepared, then in a teenage girl the need for love, the willingness to fall in love, usually precede love itself.

A teenage girl herself is aware in the vast majority of cases of the difference between feelings of love and primitive sensual sexual experiences. Moreover, she often experiences this difference as antagonism. It is typical for many adolescent girls that it is at this age that the need for love and falling in love develops in parallel, on the one hand, and a sharply negative attitude (most often in the form of disgust) to sexual attacks from other persons. More and more, the path of love is becoming the only path to sex. Since in the future I devote a special study to the psychology of love, now I do not go into the details of young love.

Erotic dreaming and erotic conversations are also typical for this age. Dreams are of both love and primitive sensory content. Love dreams, judging by retrospective stories and diaries, by their content are usually either fantasies of love luck (sometimes about death - about posthumous, so to speak, luck, for example, when a loved one regrets her), or repeated memories, as it were again experience in different variations of different cases of closeness to the object of love. Usually these dreams occur in the sphere of consciousness (at least in normal ones), only occasionally descending into the sphere of a half-asleep state and even a dream. As for dreams of primitive sensory content, on the contrary, they most often occur when they are in dreams or (less often) in a half-asleep state and are experienced by a girl (at least the one in whom sexual experiences first appeared only in adolescence) not as a product of her conscious will, but [as] something with which her will should even fight, at least as something involuntary. In a fully awake state, these dreams are usually associated with masturbation.

Analyzing the sexual experiences of a teenage girl, we come across falling in love as the most common type of these experiences at a given age. But the analysis of early love would be easier to produce if a general psychological analysis of love had been made earlier. Unfortunately, psychological science does not differ in the quantity and quality of such analyzes. Therefore, we need to make it ourselves, so that then, against the background of a general psychological analysis of love, we deeper and more clearly consider the peculiarity of the adolescent's love.

IX. But before parting with the topic of this article, a few more issues should be touched upon. In almost every popular book on sexuality, much attention is paid to children's issues of human origins. In my material, I have not found a single case when this question would arise in a child in connection with sexual experiences. For a young child, this is not a sexual question, but a scientific one; it is based not on sexual, but on an ordinary theoretical interest in origins. In an adult, such an interest would lead to acquaintance, to one degree or another, with embryology or obstetrics. But for a child, the question of origin is not a question of growth and development, but (in the vast majority of cases) a question of origin in the local sense: "Where did I (or a newly born child, etc.) come from, did I come from?" This question is not sexual in itself, but as a result of the explanations that the child happens to receive. The environment (girlfriends, nanny, etc.) often uses this question of the child for erotic conversations with him about coitus, and sometimes for direct corruption.

Freudianism greatly exaggerated and, to a certain extent, distorted the sexual nature of children's studies of gender differences, at least in relation to girls. In my material, there is not a single case when the discovery of the gender difference would eroticize the girl in itself. The erotization of the girl in such cases takes place in a completely different context. Most often and more intensely, this eroticization occurs not when the girl recognizes (sees) the sexual difference between the boy, but, on the contrary, when the boys recognize (see) her sexual difference. To put it more clearly and more accurately, when she (her genitals) is the subject of examination. In those cases when she is active here, the latter consists in the proposal to consider her. The girl is eroticized incomparably less often and weaker as not an object, but a subject of examination.

Likewise, judging by the testimony of the respondents, the first menstruation for a girl is more of a medical or aesthetic issue, rather than a sexual one.
