Reading time: 5 minutes

The siphon performs important functions: thanks to the water plug, it prevents odors from the sewer from entering the room and protects the pipes from frequent blockages. If the drain system is worn out or out of order, its replacement does not need to be postponed until later. It is not difficult to change the siphon under the sink on your own, this does not require special skills and complex tools, the main thing is to know how to do it correctly.

Siphon types

Before replacing the siphon, you will have to select and purchase a new product. First, let's get acquainted with the varieties of this device.

According to the principle of operation, the siphons used in the sink in the kitchen or in the washbasin in the bathroom are divided into the following:

  • Bottled with submerged tube (the water plug is created by two cylinders, one of which is inserted into the other). It is used more often than other types due to the possibility of removing accumulated dirt by unscrewing the plug from the bottom.
  • Bottle with two partitions.
  • Pipe. Such a product has the form of a pipe bent in the shape of the letter "S" or "U", due to the bend of which a water seal is created.
  • ... It is a plastic corrugation, bent and fixed in the desired position with a clamp.

Previously, drainage devices were made of steel and cast iron, but now practical and inexpensive plastic is most often used for siphons and other plumbing equipment. It does not corrode, rot or retain dirt. Plastic well tolerates cleaning with a wire rope and chemicals.

The cheapest products are made of polyethylene and PVC, their service life does not exceed 6 years. Polypropylene and ABS siphons will last over 10 years.

How to choose a drain device?

The product is simple and easy to disassemble to check for defects. It should be free from surface defects and threaded connections. The gaskets are elastic and lubricated with silicone sealant.

  • It is more difficult to choose a pipe drain, since it has a rigid structure: its pipes must be precisely aligned with the holes of the sink and the sewer lounger.
  • If there are problems with free space or inconvenient placement of pipes, it will save the day.
  • For a kitchen sink, it is better to take a drain with smooth walls, since the corrugations are quickly clogged with dirt.
  • If there is absolutely no space under the sink, you should choose a special one.

To install the drain device, you need to purchase an odorless silicone sealant. Acidic formulations will not work.

Replacing the siphon

The process of replacing the siphon under the sink consists of the following steps:

  • Dismantling the old drain. Work is being done on the bucket. A rag is prepared in advance, with which you should immediately close the hole in the sewer pipe to avoid an unpleasant smell.
  • After dismantling, residues of dirt are removed and the sewer pipe is cleaned.
  • The screw connections on the siphon body are checked for burrs. If there are any, they are carefully cut with a knife. You also need to make sure that all the gaskets are in place.
  • The sink grate is leveled and fitted with a gasket or sealant to prevent leakage.
  • A thick gasket is put on the sink outlet, after which it is attached to the bottom in the center of the sink drain hole. A screw is inserted into the central hole and screwed in with a screwdriver so that the drain grid and outlet are firmly pressed against the sink.
  • The flask of the device is assembled. From below, a rubber gasket should be installed on it and the cover should be screwed on. A union nut and a tapered gasket are put on the sink outlet. The upper part of the siphon is pushed onto it, after which the union nut of the output is screwed to it. Such a connection is reliable and tight. It is often used in non-pressurized systems. The outlet pipe is connected to the flask.
  • The sewer pipe should be dried and a cuff lubricated with sealant should be installed in it.
  • The drain end of the outlet pipe is adjusted to size, then inserted into the sewer pipe, where it is sealed with a cuff.
  • Water is pumped into the sink for a while to check the tightness of the connections.

Siphon repair

If the drain device starts to leak, there may be several reasons for the malfunction:

  • poor-quality installation - incorrect joining of connections, skewed threads, not fully tightened union nuts, use of unsuitable gaskets;
  • blockage;
  • wear of seals - over time, the gaskets harden and shrink, so they begin to let water through;
  • damage - cracks or chips.

For repairs, it is necessary to install a container from below to drain the liquid.

  • If the build quality is unsatisfactory, the product simply needs to be disassembled and assembled correctly.
  • In case of blockage, the lower part of the siphon must be unscrewed, then the sewer must be cleaned with a cable or wire.
  • In the place where the drain is leaking, the rubber seal is replaced with a new one, lubricated with petroleum jelly or liquid soap. In this case, the joints are treated with a sealant.

Plumber's tip: If it is not possible to buy new gaskets, the old seals should be generously greased with sealant or silicone glue and reinstalled. You can start up the water after the material has solidified. Such a connection will last for several more years.

Installing a siphon in a kitchen is a very simple task that takes a maximum of 20 minutes and requires nothing more than a screwdriver. Especially if you need to put a new siphon on a new sink that has not yet been installed. But if you need to replace an old device, then the difficulty will consist mainly in dismantling, and not in installation. Therefore, it makes little sense to call a plumber and spend money on it.

Siphons for the kitchen are different - for regular and double sinks, with the ability to connect to a washing machine or dishwasher, with or without overflow, made of metal or plastic, like a bottle or pipe. But they are all installed according to approximately the same principle, so we wrote one step-by-step instruction with an addition - for installing a siphon with an overflow and installing a double siphon for a two-bowl sink.

And, of course, all siphons have one reassignment - not to let gases through, that is, odors from the sewage system with the help of a hydraulic seal formed in the sump, and also to retain food residues, garbage, small objects in it.

In this manual, we will look at how to install a conventional bottle-type plastic siphon, which most often complements the kitchen sink, because it is very easy to clean.

You will need

  1. Screwdriver - for dismantling you need a strong screwdriver of the right size, and when installing a new siphon, you can even get by with a coin, especially if you have purchased a modern siphon model;
  2. A hacksaw, tape measure, sandpaper - sometimes needed to cut pipes or corrugations to the desired size and sand their edges.

Step 1. Dismantling the old siphon

Before installing a new siphon for the kitchen, you need to remove the old one. To do this, take a sturdy screwdriver and unscrew the screw in the center of the grate in the drain hole as shown in the photo on the right. Be sure to place the bowl under the siphon. When the siphon is removed, wipe the drain hole clean.

  • The nut and screw of the drain grate often stick to each other over time, and therefore it is very difficult to unscrew. If you cannot loosen the screw in any way, then you need to disconnect the lower part of the siphon, leaving one pipe, and then try to twist it to help the nut and screw free. Most often, these manipulations are enough.

Step 2. Assembling the siphon

Lay out all the parts in front of you, ungrouping them by type, and then you will see that there are a lot of details only at first glance, but in fact, you can assemble them intuitively, since all gaskets are sized to the corresponding parts of the siphon.

  • Bottle siphon device (without overflow): sealing rings-rings of different diameters, union nuts, a branch pipe, 2 parts of a siphon, a corrugation, as well as a drain grate and a screw;
  • All elements must be tightened tightly, but not too tight, so as not to damage the fragile plastic threads and gaskets.

Here's how to properly assemble a kitchen siphon:

  1. First, we take the largest flat gasket and put it on the largest hole in the siphon, and then screw the cap-cap to it. Now you will see that the siphon has 2 holes of different diameters - on the top and on the side.

  1. Now we take a branch pipe (it will be attached to the sink) and select a cone gasket and a union nut suitable in diameter for it. First slide the union nut onto the socket, then pull the tapered gasket with the blunt end up. We insert the pipe into the upper hole of the siphon and tighten them tightly, but not too tightly.
  • Sometimes a branch pipe with a drain funnel must first be connected into a single whole;
  • Be careful - there must be a nut in this drain funnel of the branch pipe, do not lose it during operation.
  1. It remains to screw the corrugated pipe in the same way: we put a union nut on it, then we pull the conical gasket with the blunt end up, and then we screw the corrugation to the siphon. Well, that's all, the siphon is assembled. We'll need the rest of the details for the next step.

Step 3. Installing the siphon

It's time to install the assembled device:

  • put a grooved sealing ring with strips upwards on the siphon branch pipe, and pull the remaining ring under the metal grill as shown in the photo below;
  • now we substitute the siphon under the sink (under the drain hole), hold and level it, and on top, i.e. already above the sink, put a metal grate;
  • insert the screw into the grille and tighten it with a screwdriver or a coin.

Step 4. We connect the corrugation to the sewer riser

The last step is to simply connect the corrugation to the sewer by extending it to the desired length.

  • Usually, the diameter of the corrugation for sewage is 50 or 40 mm, and the corrugations themselves are often produced in a diameter of 50 mm, which can be cut with a hacksaw to 40 mm if necessary;
  • Instead of a corrugated pipe, it is possible and even desirable to use a rigid branch.

Now we check the siphon for leaks, fill it with water so that a water seal is formed. If it doesn't flow anywhere, then you did everything right.

Supplement - installation of a siphon with overflow

If your sink has an overflow, then the installation of the siphon will be carried out in approximately the same sequence as described above. Except that at the stage of assembling the device (see step # 2), you will need to additionally assemble the overflow itself, as shown in the photo below. The principle of connecting the overflow with the branch pipe bend is exactly the same as in the previous instruction - first we put on the nut, then the annular gasket with the blunt end to the overflow, then insert the overflow into the bend and tighten the nut.

A two-section sink must be equipped with a specially designed double siphon. Such siphons have two branches, which are united by one siphon, which can be either flask-shaped or tubular. They can also have outlets for a washing machine or dishwasher as shown on the left.

Installation is carried out according to the principle described above, with the only difference that first you need to screw two pipes with a drain to two sinks, then under the sinks you need to connect two pipes with a conductor, and then screw the rest of the device to the conductor. If necessary, the pipes must be cut to the desired length with a hacksaw, sanding the edges with sandpaper.

Even a beginner can cope with the installation of a siphon under a sink or bathroom without resorting to the help of a plumber. The designs of modern siphons are in most cases assembled by hand; in rare situations, you will need to use a screwdriver.

Let's consider the functional features of different types of siphons, we will give recommendations for choosing a bundle between a washbasin and a sewer pipe. In addition, we will describe step by step how to properly install the siphon under the sink, bathtub and washing machine.

Siphon device

The siphon is the connecting element between the sewer system and the washbasin. The device removes water, blocks the entry of unpleasant odors into the room and prevents the pipeline from clogging. As a rule, the siphon is mounted near a plumbing fixture (sink, sink, bathtub or washing machine) directly near the entrance to the sewer.

The standard equipment of the siphon includes the following elements:

The kit includes instructions detailing how to install the siphon. The assembly and installation process should be started only after reading it.

Varieties of siphons for the kitchen and bath: features of choice

There are several types of these plumbing devices. The models differ in design features, material of manufacture and appearance. To make it easier to make the right choice, you need to figure out the options for the design solutions of the siphon.

Pipe. Usually mounted under the bathroom sink. It is not recommended to use such a siphon in the kitchen, as it will have to be cleaned very often. The plus of the pipe model is its compactness and attractiveness. Outwardly, they resemble a curved pipe - this bend creates a water seal.

As a rule, the lower knee of this model is removed for cleaning. The disadvantage of the pipe siphon is that the water seal is not deep enough, which is why the water evaporates faster and provokes the appearance of a specific odor.

Bottle- the most common option. Rigid flask or bottle-shaped construction. Siphons of this type have a number of positive qualities:

  • the part, which is usually clogged due to poor-quality water or merging waste, can be easily unscrewed;
  • the siphon is easy to maintain;
  • long service life;
  • water never completely leaves the water seal, therefore the "bottle" design reliably retains odors;
  • the siphon is equipped with an overflow - if the pipes are clogged, the water will not rise beyond the limits regulated by the system and will not flood the room;
  • if small valuables get into the sink, they will remain in the tank - you can get them by unscrewing the bottom of the siphon.

The bottle model also has some disadvantages:

  • mounted only with standard sewer pipes, since the device has a rigid structure;
  • takes up a lot of space under the washbasin.

Corrugated siphon easy to install. The device consists of a release and a corrugated tube on a curved frame.

Advantages of corrugated models:

  • the ability to connect to a sewer pipeline placed in a non-standard way;
  • ease of installation and "moderate" pricing policy;
  • considered the most economical option;
  • the installer independently forms a bend for the water plug, which prevents unpleasant odors from entering the room through the sink;
  • the risk of leakage is minimal, since the pipe does not have any connections;
  • ensures high-quality drainage regardless of the distance between the floor and the washbasin.

Disadvantages of corrugated siphons:

  • rapid accumulation of deposits on the inner surface of the pipe;
  • the corrugated pipe loses its strength over time due to hot water - you cannot drain boiling water into a sink with such a siphon.

When choosing a siphon, you should follow some tips:

  1. It is easy enough to find a siphon for a washbasin with a standard shape. It is better to equip exclusive models with a siphon supplied with the sink.
  2. The throughput of the siphon is selected taking into account the water pressure in the pipes and the presence of additional devices connected to the device - the more there are, the wider the outlet section should be. In this situation, you will have to refuse to buy a flat siphon with a small section.
  3. When buying, it is necessary to check the parameters of the sink, bath and sink with the parameters of the siphon. Going to the store, you need to measure in advance: the diameter of the drain / overflow hole and the distance to the sewer pipes.

How to install a siphon in the kitchen: procedure

Preparatory work

After purchasing the siphon, you need to check its completeness - whether all the parts are available. Plastic models are sold in soft packaging, so some items may be scratched or deformed during transportation. There should be no damage or burrs on the threads.

In addition to the siphon itself, for installation you will need:

  • silicone sealant or gasket;
  • insulating tape;
  • flat small screwdriver.

Before installing the siphon on the sink in the bathroom or kitchen, you will need to dismantle the old device:

  1. Place a bucket under the sink.
  2. Remove the broken siphon together with the sewer line.
  3. If the obsolete coupling is unsuitable for further use, then it must be replaced.
  4. Remove dirt from the socket and drain. Plug the sewer pipe with a rag and a bag.

When replacing old cast-iron communications, firmly concreted in cement, some difficulties may arise. The cast iron will have to be knocked out of the cement, but this must be done very carefully so that the debris does not fall into the pipe. Otherwise, the pipeline will be regularly contaminated. Fragments trapped in the pipe must be removed with pliers.

How to install a sink siphon. Step-by-step instruction

If the siphon was sold assembled, then it should be disassembled and checked how well all the parts are fixed and tightened.

Advice. Kitchen siphons must be assembled by hand to avoid damage to the product and to control the clamping force.

Installation sequence:

  1. Mount the rubber strip on the cast iron pipe. Bring the plastic sewer pipe to the desired level (up to 40 cm from the floor) and install a special adapter on it.
  2. Manually connect the pipe under the sink and the main part of the siphon.
  3. With your free hand, insert the mesh with the gasket and the screw into the drain hole, tighten the screw and press completely.
  4. Insert the corrugated pipe into the drain socket and tighten with a wing nut.
  5. Install a corrugated pipe socket in the sewer pipe.
  6. Some instructions recommend connecting additional equipment at this stage. However, it is advisable to first connect the siphon to the sewer and check it. At this time, additional taps are closed with plugs that are supplied with a siphon.
  7. After checking - connect additional equipment. Secure the drain hoses of the dishwasher and waste machine with hose clips.

Advice. It is important to ensure that the drain hose from the siphon is not twisted or kinked anywhere. The water must drain freely.

How to properly install a siphon on a bathtub

Typically, a bathtub has a couple of holes. One is located on the bottom, the other on the front wall. From these features, the design of the bath siphon is determined, consisting of the following parts:

  • plastic tube corrugation;
  • drain bowl;
  • elbow with a branch pipe.

Here is an algorithm for how to install a siphon under the bathroom:

  1. Pre-assemble the siphon and "try on" how it will be located under the bathroom. Before starting work on installing a siphon, it is necessary to consider the placement of pipes, determine the thickness and length of the pipeline.
  2. Install a metal rim in the upper hole on the bathtub (on the front wall). Fix the branch pipe to it.
  3. Using a bolt, attach the drain bowl to the drain hole located in the bottom.
  4. To connect the siphon to the holes, it is necessary to unscrew the metal bolt (located on the bath itself). Then screw the branch pipe with a bolt to the hole.
  5. When the siphon components are assembled, the free end of the corrugation can be connected to the sewer pipe.
  6. Check the joints for leaks - let water into the bath under low pressure. If there is no leak, then gradually increase the head. Look under the bathtub - if there is no water, the siphon is ready for normal use.

Installing a siphon for a washing machine

For washing machines, drain siphons are used. Installation technology depends on the type of construction.

The open siphon is fixed with a fixing bracket:

  1. Mark the place of fasteners on the wall.
  2. Drill holes and screw the siphon to the wall.
  3. Connect the siphon to the tee using a flexible hose.
  4. The final stage is the connection to the washing machine.

Installing a built-in siphon is a more painstaking job. Procedure:

  1. Make a hole in the wall with a puncher.
  2. Secure the sewer and water pipes in the hole with the mounting bracket.
  3. Install the curved siphon.
  4. Connect the siphon to the communications.
  5. Seal the holes with cement mortar, fasten the parts.
  6. Connect the washing machine according to the instructions.
  1. You should start installing the siphon after studying the instructions that come with the kit.
  2. When installing a siphon for an acrylic or metal bath, the drain hole must be sanded with sandpaper - this contributes to a snug fit of the gaskets.
  3. The split-flow siphon requires a rigid fixing to the wall.
  4. Before tightening the siphon, it is necessary to check that the gaskets do not move.
  5. The diameter of the drain line must be at least 5 cm.

Siphon cleaning and repair

If the siphon is clogged and the water does not pass through the drain, then you can try to clean it in one of the following ways:

  1. Pour hot water into the sink / sink to dissolve the grease. The effect will be enhanced if soda is added to the water.
  2. Use household chemicals to flush pipes.
  3. Place the bucket underneath, remove the bottom plug, unscrew and clean the knee by hand.

If the siphon leaks, then it is necessary:

  1. Treat the siphon with grease, sealant. This helps in cases where a leak has occurred at the interface with the sink.
  2. Tighten the plug tightly.
  3. All parts that have been repaired must be cleaned of the old sealant layer and treated with a "fresh" compound.

The durability of the siphon operation largely depends on the quality of the device itself and the accuracy of its installation.

Even a beginner who is engaged in such work for the first time is capable of the kitchen. Modern drainage systems are designed for manual assembly. Only in the rarest of cases may a specific set of tools be required to accomplish a task. Usually, everything is limited to the use of pliers and a screwdriver.

What is a siphon?

Such plumbing structures in most cases are represented by a plastic or metal pipe, less often by several pipes of a specific, curved shape. Serves as a device for draining dirty, waste water, small sewage into the sewer. Due to the presence of a slight bend, the siphon for the kitchen sink leaves a small fraction of water in the pipe, which forms a kind of sump. The latter prevents the penetration of sewer noise, gases, as well as unpleasant odors back into the room.

Scheme in the kitchen

To get a clear idea of the assembly and installation of the siphon, let's look at its standard diagram. Plumbing fixtures are completed with such elements as:

  • The body is in the form of a knee or "bottle".
  • Outlet pipe.
  • Drain pipe.
  • Cuffs.
  • Plastic nuts.
  • Insulating gaskets.
  • Rubber plugs (bottom and top).
  • Tie screw.
  • Decorative cover for the sink.

Manufacturing materials

Modern sink siphons with overflow for kitchens are made mainly of PVC, chrome-plated brass or propylene. The most expensive are metal products. However, due to the relatively high price, their purchase looks really justified only from the point of view of prestige and aesthetics of appearance. From the point of view of practicality, durability and ease of use, plastic siphons for kitchen sinks with overflow are not inferior to the same metal ones.

A construction made of PVC is the cheapest option. Even with daily use, such a siphon will last at least 7-10 years.

As for propylene products, they are 15-20% more expensive than their PVC counterparts. With a high-quality installation, such a sink siphon in the kitchen will last for more than a decade. Unlike chrome-plated structures, cleaning of chemically resistant, durable propylene can be done with a metal cable or a hook.

Drain pipe

The device of a siphon for a sink in a kitchen suggests the possibility of installing a corrugated or rigid drain pipe. It is better to give preference to the latter option, since small waste and pollution intensively accumulate on the inner grooves of the corrugation. In addition, it is much more difficult to accidentally damage a rigid pipe with objects that are located under the sink.

Sealant

To install a sink siphon in the kitchen, you will need a semi-liquid or plastic sealant. In most cases, an inexpensive silicone product may be the best choice.

Before giving preference to one or another sealant, you need to check it for acidity. You can determine how chemically neutral a substance is by squeezing a small amount of it out of the container and sniffing it. If there is a pungent vinegar smell, then the sealant is not very suitable for such work.

On sale there are means for insulating joint joints based on natural rubber. These sealants are expensive. However, their service life is at least several decades.

Connection parameters

Standard connection sizes are 32, 40 and 50 mm in diameter. Choosing a siphon for a sink in the kitchen, you need to decide on the parameters of the old design. If you cannot find a product of the required size, you must resort to purchasing a special transition cuff.

Today, there are siphons on sale that have a stepped end of the spout. The latter can be adapted for all standard sizes of nozzles. It is enough just to carefully cut off the excess material and purchase a suitable seal.

How to assemble a sink siphon in the kitchen?

The assembly of the structure takes place on the basis of the attached instructions with the product diagram. When performing the recommended actions in a clear sequence, even a beginner should not have problems with the layout of the elements of the drainage system. However, in order to avoid the appearance of leaks, you need to pay attention to several important nuances:

  1. During the assembly process, the main thing is to create the most tight connections. Even when buying, the product should be inspected for defects. Particular attention must be paid to the quality of the thread.
  2. During the installation of the connections, the gaskets must be securely fixed. For these purposes, a sealant is used. The elbows of the drain system are screwed in until they stop.
  3. It should be borne in mind that several spacers are used to equip the installation area of the decorative strip. Black is used for laying on the top of the nozzle. Thinner - white, fits under the pad.
  4. After the kitchen sink siphon has been completely assembled, it is recommended to get rid of the excess sealant that protrudes around the edges of the joints.

Preparing for installation

Having figured out how to assemble a siphon in the kitchen, you can proceed to dismantling the old structure and cleaning the surfaces of the sewer pipe. When realizing the task, do not attach too much importance to the presence of residual dirt on the drain surface, since a special sealing collar is designed to fit on a rough base.

Certain difficulties may arise when replacing a Soviet cast-iron siphon embedded in a pipe with a cement landing. In this case, you will have to work hard to depressurize the connection using a hammer, chisel or chisel. This is required to remove old cement from the pipe and dismantle the old siphon.

When preparing a siphon for a double sink in a kitchen or a single container, you need to ensure that fragments of fragile cast iron and particles of cement do not remain in the sewer pipe. During the operation of a new system, such debris can turn into a source of regular blockages. It is convenient to remove all kinds of debris from the sewer branch with pliers and tweezers.

Installation

How to install a siphon in the kitchen? For reliable installation, work must be carried out in strict sequence:

  1. The pre-lubricated installation collar is placed in the sewer pipe. In this case, all surfaces must be dry.
  2. The mating (end) surfaces of the body threaded connections are checked. If necessary, cut off any burrs with a sharp blade, as they may damage the gaskets.
  3. The end of the drain pipe is inserted into the collar and securely fastened. If you have to work with a clamp in the form of a clamp, you will have to use a screwdriver to tighten the latter.
  4. A drain grate is installed in the sink. The black bottom gasket has not yet been installed.
  5. A thin O-ring is placed in the groove of the plug, which is abundantly lubricated with sealant. Next, the cork is wrapped. It is enough to capture the thread at a distance of about 2-3 turns of it.
  6. If the siphon body is represented by a bottle-shaped branch pipe, a special valve with an outward opening flap is placed in it. The structure is connected to the outlet pipe.
  7. The lower drain gasket fits into the groove of the upper branch pipe, the nut of the siphon body is screwed on.
  8. Slightly wiggling the knee of the structure, you should carefully alternately tighten the side and top bottle nuts.

Functional check

When all the activities aimed at assembling and installing the siphon are completed, it is worthwhile to start testing the drain system. For this, water is fed into the sink under maximum pressure, which allows you to test the tightness of the joints. The absence of leaks indicates the correct performance of the work.

When choosing siphons for "Blanco" sinks in the kitchen or considering any other product as a suitable option, it is worth checking the system once again for the presence of all structural components. Unopened packages often contain insufficient fasteners for a successful installation.

When assembling and installing the siphon, all parts must be clean and dry. One of the main reasons for the appearance of leaks is the ingress of dirt and sand on the rubber gaskets.

The siphon must be installed in such a way that its outlet is located an order of magnitude higher than the inlet of the sewer drain pipe. Compliance with this requirement allows you to form a certain slope, which becomes a favorable basis for the formation of a free flow of water.

Operation and maintenance

Installing the sink siphon correctly is critical. However, quality maintenance of the drainage system is also important. Timely cleaning contributes to the maximum long-term operation of the structure.

To dissolve deposits in the form of fatty masses, the use of caustic soda is recommended. Periodic, continuous flushing of pipe connections under the pressure of hot water improves the throughput of the system. In the event of the formation of significant blockages, it is worth using special chemicals to clean the sewer pipes.

The simplest way to remove blockages in the siphon connections is to use a conventional plunger. If, after several movements, the garbage does not pass through the sewer, it is worth disassembling the structure and flushing its individual elements. If you have a plastic siphon, you can get rid of the blockage using a metal wire with a slight thickening at the end. Such pipe cleaning methods are widely used by plumbers.

If a persistent smell of sewage appears in the kitchen or a leak has formed in the siphon structure, it is worth doing an independent repair of the system or resorting to the help of masters. In this case, one should not forget about the need to remove the old sealant and apply a new one.

Finally

The siphon is an important sanitary fixture in both the kitchen and the bathroom. Therefore, it is advisable that any actions that we described above in the article are performed by trained specialists, which will serve as a guarantee of reliable and durable operation of the system. However, if you have some experience or in case of urgent need, you should use the above recommendations for doing the work yourself.

Frequent blockages, slow drainage of water, leaks and the penetration of sewer odors into the room - all this suggests that the kitchen sink needs urgent help. In most cases, such problems are caused by poor-quality installation or siphon breakage. To replace it, it is not at all necessary to call the specialized specialists of the municipal service, since you can install a siphon in the kitchen quite independently.

Types of siphons and selection rules

The functional purpose of siphons is, first of all, to protect against the penetration of unpleasant odors into the room from the domestic sewage system. Despite the seeming variety of models, the principle of operation of the devices is practically the same. When draining used water from various sanitary devices, part of it remains inside the siphon, forming a water plug that prevents the occurrence of extraneous odors and noise when using the sewage system. Similar products are represented by the following types:

  • flexible corrugated S-shaped hose;
  • U-shaped pipe structure;
  • bottle shape element.

The main disadvantage of the design of the first two types of siphons is the lack of revision, which greatly complicates preventive maintenance during their maintenance during operation. Such siphons are most often used for washbasins in toilets and bathrooms. For a kitchen sink, it is considered more practical to use bottle-shaped products. Their collapsible body allows you to periodically clean the reservoir of the hydraulic seal from the accumulated food debris and fat deposits on the walls of the siphon.

The determining criterion in choosing one or another type of bottle siphons is, first of all, the design of the sink itself. It can be provided with an additional drain hole in the upper part of the side wall, which serves to prevent overflow of water over the edge at maximum filling of the container. In this case, you should pay attention to siphons with an additional overflow pipe.

For double sinks, the connection to the sewer system can provide for one common or two separate siphons for each tank. Such designs are distinguished by a somewhat complicated communication wiring.

Installing a siphon in the kitchen makes it possible to connect a nearby dishwasher or washing machine to its drain pipe. This additional option greatly facilitates the process of connecting household appliances to the sewage system, so when choosing the right product, this moment should also not be overlooked.

When selecting a siphon, the diameter of its drain pipe is of no small importance. The largest possible hole size for a particular model of kitchen sink will provide faster drainage of the utilized water and prevent frequent blockages.

Main assemblies and components

The bottle siphons produced today have a fairly standard look and represent a design consisting of several main units.

  1. Protective metal mesh with decorative nickel plating.
  2. Overflow pipe.
  3. Additional outlet for connecting a dishwasher or washing machine.
  4. Siphon body.
  5. Branch pipe for connection to the sewerage system.
  6. Silicone gasket, which ensures the tightness of the threaded connection of the collapsible siphon body.
  7. Union nuts.

In addition, the complete set of the product includes flexible corrugated hoses, gaskets for union nuts and several metal screws for fastening.

The vast majority of such products are made from plastic. Therefore, before changing the siphon in the kitchen, you should make sure that all its nodes are intact. First of all, the body of the product should not have hidden cracks. This can be easily verified by pouring some water into its container. Also, attention should be paid to the notch of the thread of plastic parts, its relief, the absence of visible dents and burrs.

Installing or replacing a siphon in the kitchen provides for some additional materials and tools necessary for the job. In most cases, they are always at hand at the home master:

  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • insulating tape made of polymer material;
  • silicone sealant.

Despite the almost complete absence of water pressure in the drain system of a kitchen sink, many experts, nevertheless, strongly advise the use of a waterproof sealant specially designed for plumbing work. The composition must process all threaded connections of the product, as well as installed gaskets.

The use of a sealant is a prerequisite for a quality siphon assembly!

Assembly is required in strict accordance and in a strictly specified order, determined by the accompanying instructions. In this case, it is necessary to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • It is advisable to disassemble the assembled product to make sure that all parts and gaskets are present;
  • there should be no dirt or burrs on the connected elements that prevent their snug fit;
  • When screwing on the bottom siphon cover, do not use excessive force, as this can easily strip the threads or push through the supplied gasket.

To check the build quality of the siphon for leaks, you need to pour a small amount of water into it. If there are no smudges on the bottom cover, you can safely proceed with its installation.

Assembling the assembled siphon

In cases of replacement of a previously installed product, its preliminary dismantling will be required. Before disassembling the siphon in the kitchen, place a container under the sink to drain the remaining water. Then, using a screwdriver, unscrew the fastening screw that holds the drain decorative grill to the bottom of the sink. After disconnecting the outlet from the sewer, the siphon can be permanently removed.

To install a new appliance, the previous seat of the kitchen sink must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and grease. It will also be necessary to check the condition of the rubber sealing sleeve on the outlet of the sewer system, which is recommended, nevertheless, to be replaced with a new sleeve. At the same time, preventive cleaning of the sewer lounger itself will not be superfluous.

The assembled siphon is installed in the following sequence:

  • an outlet pipe is inserted into the drain hole of the sink, with a pre-installed rubber gasket, to which a decorative grill is attached with a screw;
  • from below, the outlet is tightly attracted to the sink by means of a union nut;
  • the assembled siphon is put on the end of the branch pipe, after which the elements are connected with a second union nut into a single structure;
  • if there is an overflow hole in the sink, it is connected to the corresponding outlet of the drain pipe using the supplied flexible hose;
  • a corrugated outlet hose leading to the kitchen sewer system is connected to the siphon outlet located on the side wall of the case. To do this, use another union nut;
  • at the final stage, the connection to the sewer pipe is made by means of an adapter sealing sleeve, since the mating parts have different diameters.

At the end of the installation, a primary check of the assembled structure is carried out by filling the kitchen sink with water.

If the siphon provides additional taps for connecting household appliances, they must first be closed with special plugs!

If there are no leaks, proceed to connecting the drain hoses of the washing machine or dishwasher, after which the installation of the siphon can be considered complete.

The operation of a gravity sewage system requires compliance with certain rules. Asking the question of how to properly install a siphon in the kitchen, you should take into account some of the nuances that are well known to professionals:

  • the flexible drain hose leading from the siphon to the sewer pipe is set to the shortest possible length, without unnecessary bends;
  • the slope of the sewer plank bed with a diameter of 50 mm can be at least 0.03, that is, 30 mm for each running meter of the pipe, which will ensure the normal flow of water in the system;
  • when connecting drain hoses from household appliances to the siphon, they must be additionally secured to the corresponding branch pipes with clamps. Such a precautionary measure will prevent the hose from unexpected rupture as a result of an increase in the pressure in it, which is created in the drainage system of the operating equipment.

In conclusion, it remains to add that proper care and regular preventive cleaning of the siphon from accumulated dirt will significantly extend its life and eliminate discomfort when using a kitchen sink.
