How to make a baby bed. Comfortable do-it-yourself crib: drawings, photos

The birth of a child is a new stage in the life of a young family. They prepare for it in advance, at this moment the parents become closer, jointly taking care of their child. Things necessary from the first days appear in the house: oilcloths, diapers, diapers, a bath, special hygiene products, a personal sleeping place. The cost of all required items can be very burdensome for young couples, sometimes overwhelming. Many are trying to save money, for example, they make toys on their own, make a crib with their own hands.

If you draw up a drawing correctly, plan the design of the bed, then the furniture can be used for a long time, from the moment a child is born to his four or five years. It is extremely important from the first day to accustom the baby to sleep separately. It is unacceptable to put him in the bed of his parents. Although most mothers sleep very sensitively, irreparable things can happen in a dream. In addition, it is difficult to wean a child from the parental bed.

Advantages and features of making a bed with your own hands

Furniture stores sell many models of cribs made from various materials. Wood and its derivatives are mainly used, but there are also plastic options. It is not always possible to find furniture for a newborn that meets all the requirements, and suitable products are very expensive. In this case, home-made designs will be an excellent alternative, they have a number of advantages, expressed in the following:

  1. Price. Do-it-yourself furniture will cost much cheaper than purchased analogues, which will help save the family budget.
  2. Reliability. In the process of preparation and assembly, the strength of all components is checked at each stage.
  3. Environmental friendliness. The bed for your son or daughter is made only from natural wood, which does not emit harmful substances.
  4. Exclusivity. A self-drawn drawing will become the key to an individual, unique product.
  5. Gaining experience. When working, a person acquires new skills that can later be applied in the production of similar items.
  6. Compatibility with the interior and style of the room.

When making a bed, you should follow certain rules:

  • for work it is necessary to use only environmentally friendly materials, which include natural wood;
  • the surface should not have sharp corners, roughness, chips, protrusions;
  • the product must correspond to the height, weight, physiological parameters of the baby.
  • it is necessary to provide protection against falling, rolling down the child.
  • for small apartments or houses, multifunctional structures are suitable, for this you can use the free space under them, install additional boxes, and make a play area.

Designs and sizes of a children's bed

The easiest way to make standard furniture, which consists of four legs, a frame, a mattress and a headboard. The model is used exclusively for sleeping the baby. If the sleeping place is fenced along the perimeter with walls with bars, then you get a classic bed for a newborn. Although for this category you can use a cradle, playpen, rocking chair, side options.

In small rooms it is more practical to install multifunctional items. To do this, they are equipped with drawers, a chest of drawers, and other useful elements. A very functional bed with an attic, where the bed is placed on the second tier. Below you can organize a playground, install lockers for storing items.

The furniture made in the form of a typewriter looks unusual. This is an option for older children who are under adolescence. Non-standard design will allow you to make inconspicuous lockers inside, hidden under the hood or behind the door. You will have to tinker with many elements, which will require certain carpentry skills.

Among non-standard designs, you can choose a bed-house. This model is suitable for children over 3 years old. It has all the elements of a standard item, as well as doors and windows, a gable roof. Decorative products will decorate any interior, will delight every kid.

What material are the beds made from?

With the independent construction of children's furniture, it is necessary to determine the materials that will be used in the process. The main requirement is that the raw materials used must be environmentally friendly, not harm the development of the baby. Let us dwell on this issue in more detail, consider the best option for all the components of the structure:

  1. Mattress. It is recommended to purchase it in a specialized store, as purchased models are produced taking into account the recommendations developed by orthopedic doctors. If the bed is planned to be used for more than one year, then it is better to choose double-sided products with varying degrees of rigidity. For children under three years old, a hard, hard coating is required, which contributes to fixing the back and the proper development of the body. The filler should be wool, do not take models that include cotton wool and foam rubber. The upholstery should also be made of natural fabric and have an antiseptic coating.
  2. Frame, lamellas, legs, sidewalls. For a beloved child, only a tree should be chosen. Coniferous species are suitable for work: pine, spruce. Natural wood breathes, it is strong enough, suitable for any interior. Those who decide to use MDF or chipboard should remember that the boards contain phenol and formaldehyde resins, so you need to take only models with an emission class of E-0.
  3. Protective equipment. To extend the service life, wooden surfaces are treated with special compounds, they are painted, varnished. For these purposes, nitroenamel, acrylic, water-based paint for children's rooms are used. A great option would be to use wax. To preserve the texture of wood, you can use acrylic varnish, other options are highly toxic.

If you have free funds, you can purchase dense wood species: solid oak, larch. This is the most durable material, the products look rich, but it is quite difficult to process raw materials.

We make a bed with our own hands

Having firmly decided to build a structure on your own, you should understand all the nuances associated with its creation. Initially, a drawing is developed in which all the constituent elements are displayed. Then they acquire the materials necessary for work, prepare the tools, in the absence of any of them, they buy it in addition.

Based on the scheme, the raw materials are marked out under the components. They are cut out, combined into a single structure, treated with special compounds, painted, varnished, decorated. For clarity, let us consider in detail the main stages, which include the process of making a classic crib.

Drawings and diagram

The creation of any object is impossible without a drawing. In a graphic image, made in a certain scale, the dimensions of the nodes are indicated. To compile it, you will need minimal skills in drawing, you can also use special programs. When developing a project, consider:

  1. Dimensions of the room where the product will be installed. In a spacious room, you can place a larger bed.
  2. The dimensions of standard products for children under three years old are 120x60 cm. If you plan to use the design in the future, you should give preference to larger models 150x60 cm, 180x70 cm.
  3. From the bottom of the crib, you can equip lockers in which children's things will be stored.
  4. For preschoolers, it is worthwhile to provide removable bumpers that will protect them from rolling and falling.
  5. The design and decoration is chosen depending on the preferences of the parents.

Necessary tools and materials

For the manufacture and assembly of the bed, the following materials will be required:

  • board;
  • MDF sheet;
  • varnishes and paints;
  • self-tapping screws, fasteners, rubber heels on the legs.

Tools:

  • wood saw, electric jigsaw;
  • hammer, screwdriver, screwdriver;
  • drill, drill;
  • measuring instruments, a simple pencil.

Basic parts and their preparation

A standard bed consists of 4 legs, 2 backs, sidewalls, removable sides, frame, slats, mattress. The last item on the list is purchased ready-made, the rest are made by hand. The process looks like this:

  1. In accordance with the drawing, marking of all component parts is applied to the tree. This can be done with a tape measure and a simple pencil.
  2. An electric jigsaw, a saw is used to cut elements.
  3. Components are polished with sandpaper.
  4. Depending on the length of the sidewalls, the metal corners used to install the mattress are cut out with a grinder. Holes are drilled in them for self-tapping screws to secure them to the tree.
  5. All components are painted, varnished.

Basic assembly steps

Bed assembly work is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Collect the backs, located at the head and footboard. They are connected to the legs.
  2. Prepare the base for the mattress. To do this, metal corners are attached to the wooden sidewalls using self-tapping screws. Lamellas are fixed to them from above, perpendicular to the side walls.
  3. The backs and the base under the mattress are connected using furniture fittings; for reliability, it is better to use the corners.
  4. A mattress is installed on the frame.
  5. On the sides, removable protective bumpers are added, fixed on special metal or wooden fittings.
  6. If necessary, the finished product is decorated.

Making and assembling a car bed

Children will love this design. Make it for everyone. To do this, you need to draw up a drawing or download it on the network. After that, you can proceed to the pattern of components and assembly. The work consists of the following stages:

  1. The side and front walls are made from the furniture board.
  2. On the side surfaces, cutouts are made that imitate car doors, through which it will be convenient for the child to get inside.
  3. On one of the end parts, with the help of an electric jigsaw, holes for the headlights and a radiator are carefully cut out.
  4. Next, a few more planks are cut out, imitating the hood of the car, the windshield.
  5. Wheels are being prepared.
  6. Wooden corners are attached to the side walls, on which the base for the mattress is laid.
  7. A rectangular frame is assembled from the prepared parts, which is mounted on wheels.
  8. The resulting workpiece is painted or varnished.
  9. The base is fixed inside the frame, the mattress is laid.

Features of the assembly of the bed for newborns

For newborns, the design of the bed should be slightly different. Its standard size is 120x60 cm, when the baby reaches 3 years old, it will become cramped for him. When planning, it is worth considering the possibility of adjusting the height of the bed. When the child is small, it is convenient to place him higher, and as soon as he learns to get up, the bottom will have to be lowered for safety.

For a comfortable sleep of the baby, parents, neighbors, one removable side or end wall should be provided in the crib, which will allow it to be placed near the parent. The distance between the bars around the entire perimeter is made within 2.5 - 6 cm. These are the optimal sizes at which the child cannot pinch his fingers or stick his head through. Do not forget about the strength of the product, good fixation of removable elements.

In addition to these features, often the legs of the bed are mounted on wheels, making it mobile. Pendulum mechanisms or rocking chairs are also equipped. Their use is recommended by pediatricians. This allows you to easily lull the child. It is advisable to use the bumper only in the first months, then it should be removed to increase the view that the child knows the world.

Bed decor with soft sides of your own tailoring

Not only dad can contribute to the family budget by building a finished bed. Mom can also join this process by decorating the product with soft sides. Outwardly, the craft resembles covers stuffed with filler. In addition to the decorative function, they also perform a practical one, they protect the baby from accidental blows against the bars, do not allow him to put his hand between them. When sewing them, certain requirements must be observed:

  • The fabric should be only natural, linen, calico, cotton are suitable. Wool must be used as a filler.
  • The material is better to choose light, pastel shades, which have a good effect on the psyche of the child.
  • If a drawing is provided, then it should be done in a medium size, a small one will annoy him.

Master class on making a bunk bed

This is ideal for a family with two children of the same age, whether they are a boy and a girl or same-sex babies. The design of the bunk bed repeats the single-tier. A slight difference lies only in the presence of a ladder, the height of the product, the fastening of two lodges on the same supports. For safety, a side is provided on top, located around the entire perimeter. To understand all the intricacies of the model, consider a master class on making such a bed:

  1. We prepare boards with a section of 3.5x10 cm. According to the chosen scheme, we cut out 4 blanks of 190 cm each, 4 - 180 cm each, 4 - 80 cm each.
  2. On 190 cm boards, stepping back from each edge by 30 cm, on both end sides at the top and bottom we make grooves for the width of the crossbars 3.5x10 mm.
  3. We collect the side backs. To do this, using segments of 80 cm, two support legs are connected.
  4. Finished backs are connected using 4 pieces of 180 cm, installed in the outer end grooves.
  5. From above and below we make the basis for the mattress. To do this, along the perimeter of both tiers, lamellas are nailed over the sidewalls. Here they can not be recessed, thanks to the sides arranged in a circle.
  6. We mount the stairs. Its length should be the distance from the lower edge of the side partition to the upper edge of the support.
  7. We install the sides, lay the mattress.

Self-made bed with storage boxes

As a basis for the manufacture of such a design, you can take any drawing of a standard bed. The only difference will be the presence of full-fledged side walls and drawers. First of all, it is necessary to determine their number. It can be one element that occupies the entire space under the bed, two, or even three. It is also worth considering the type of sliding parts. There are two radically different options: independent of the main body, fixed to the frame, retractable on rails.

The process of building a product will be similar to the preparation and assembly of a conventional single children's bed. Here it is necessary to provide not legs, but side walls and intermediate partitions on which the guides will be attached. It is also worth considering the fact that the gap between the floor and the bottom of the tray should be at least 1 cm.

To make the box itself, you will need to prepare four pieces of wood, their dimensions depend on the size of the space under the bed. Then they are connected into a rectangular or square box, a sheet of chipboard, plywood is nailed from below. To reinforce the structure from the inside, 4 support bars are installed from below around the entire perimeter, an inset bottom is made, which allows you to store heavier items.

Decoration methods

For a baby bed, comfort conditions and practical design are equally important. In order to improve the conditions for the baby, auxiliary decorative elements are used, which also carry a number of useful functions. Consider the most popular options for decorating this item:

  • Canopy. Elegant canopy, which is sewn from any natural fabric. This item is recommended to use up to 4-5 months.

In addition to decoration, the product serves as protection against insects. It collects a lot of dust, so it needs to be washed frequently.

  • Canopy. Unlike the previous version, only light, transparent materials are used: tulle, organza, veil. Fastening is done with a rod.
  • Valance. This is the frame of the lower edge of the bed. It covers the bottom of the furniture, which will perfectly mask some of the mistakes made when making the crib yourself.
  • Hanging toys. Often suspended in tandem with a music mobile. This type of decor is made from cardboard or fabric. Contribute to the development of the child. They can have the most diverse appearance, whether it be snowflakes, animals, flowers or others.
  • Stickers. You can buy them at any furniture store. When fixing them, make sure that the child cannot reach them.

Bed painting - what paint is better to use

In the industrial production of baby beds, oil paints are used. They improve the appearance, protect the surface from damage, they are easy to clean from dirt. When choosing coloring agents on your own, you should study their composition, make sure that it does not contain toxic, poisonous elements. These requirements are met by:

  • Acrylic water based paints. They are distinguished by high cost and good performance.
  • Nitro paints. They do not have a pronounced smell, they are inexpensive, they dry quickly.
  • Water emulsion. They are characterized by a long service life. With their help, you can hide shallow cracks.
  • Wax. The most expensive option. This is a flawless, high-quality coating with water-repellent properties.

A person cannot do without a pillow. It has to do with the structure of the human body. The element supports the curvature of the cervical spine, promotes blood flow to the brain. The child begins to put this item at the age of 1-2 years, depending on his physical development. The product should have a rectangular shape from 30x40 to 40x60 cm. Its thickness should be: for children under three years old - 3-4 cm, after - 5-6 cm. An important place is occupied by its elasticity, too soft a pillow will lead to pain in the cervical vertebra, fast fatigue.

As a filler, bird fluff, natural wool, buckwheat husk, holofiber, latex are used. The last three options are the best in terms of elasticity. When choosing a fabric material, preference should be given to natural fiber treated with antiseptics. It is better to choose models in which the cover is fastened with a zipper, then you can control the state of the filler.

Unlike a pillow, a mattress is necessary from the first days of a child. It should be hypoallergenic, safe, absorb and evaporate liquids without problems. For babies, elasticity is also of great importance, so it is necessary to take only orthopedic products. Otherwise, the requirements for filler and sheathing are almost the same, as for pillows.

Choice of bed linen

Any person gains strength during sleep, and the kids are still growing and developing. Every parent wants to make this moment peaceful. In this matter, they are helped by bed linen, which should be of high quality, made from natural materials. For these purposes, the following types of fabric are used:

  • cotton,
  • chintz,
  • satin,
  • calico,
  • bamboo.

The color of the selected canvas should be neutral, it is better to use pastel, light colors that are conducive to sleep. For newborns, a product without a pattern is suitable, for older children, but not teenagers - underwear with a print of your favorite characters from cartoon series. Also, when choosing bedding, you should pay attention to:

  • the material should not lose its structure and color from frequent washing;
  • do not take underwear with buttons, ribbons, lace;
  • Conclusion

    Having studied the ready-made schemes, having considered all the positive and negative sides associated with the independent manufacture of a crib for their baby, any parent will build a similar design. In this case, all family members can participate in the process. Dad will prepare and assemble the frame, and mom will pick up a mattress, pillow, bed linen, and make decor elements with her own hands. This will not only save the family budget, but also show the child that he is taken care of and loved.

From the first days, I want to surround the child with all the best, safe, reliable, and most importantly, such that it will serve faithfully for many years until the baby grows up.To do this, as a rule, natural materials are chosen that are not able to lay a “mine” for future oncological diseases, thereby protecting the child from the first days.

Parents always want their children to grow up in a healthy environment.

The crib is the baby's first fortress. It is there that he sleeps, enjoys life, begins to explore the world, studying everything that surrounds him.But how can you be sure that the covering and materials of the baby bed are safe? Just make it with your own hands.

It is very important to protect a fragile organism from the harmful effects of the external environment.

Smart dads with their hands in place know very well- You can only be sure of something when you have tried it and done it yourself. This is the main advantage of the product. Why is that? Let's do a little comparison.

Factory Homemade
Advantages Flaws Advantages Flaws
Do not waste time - go, buy or order Not always good quality Do you know what it's made of? Manufacturing is laborious and time consuming.
No guarantee of structural integrity Robust design - tested by myself
Coating is not always of high quality High-quality coating - I chose it myself
Often the surface of the product is not processed The surface is carefully cleaned - after all, the child will “crawl” on it

If you have certain skills, you can make a bed with your own hands.

Baby crib design and construction

The comfort of the room, how the child will like it, its convenience and the rational distribution of living space depend on the appearance of the children's bed.

Thus, design and construction are interconnected.

We all want something original and unusual, unusual for everyday life. But let's be realistic. Why complicate life with a fancy design of a baby bed in the form of a car, an airplane, a baby elephant or a steamboat, if they are difficult to make? In addition, if there is no specialized tool, such as a thicknesser, CNC milling machine, band saw, and others? By choosing such a design, you can ruin all the wood without achieving what you want.

Let's dwell on the classic crib without frills and tricks, which, although difficult, is quite realistic to make from solid wood with your own hands.

The best material for a baby bed is solid wood

Wood is the most preferred material, has no contraindications, is absolutely inert. While chipboard, fiberboard, OSB, MDF and plywood include fillers that adversely affect the body, as well as poorly tolerate mechanical stress.

Wooden furniture is always a noble, natural and cozy accent in the interior.

The main feature of all these materials that negatively affect the use is the presence of formaldehyde, a chemical compound used in medicine for disinfection.As you can see, it is not for nothing that we advise you to choose a wood array. Prerequisite - well dried. Do not use damp boards, they will look back, you won’t have time: the structure will fall apart, the material will crack and unscrew. It is optimal if the wood has dried on the racks for three to four years, in a shaded place, sheltered from moisture.

But if there is none, then a machine-dried tree will do.

In addition to the boards you will need:

  • Self-tapping screws, bolts (for fixing parts);
  • Metal corners (will give additional rigidity to corner joints);
  • Timber, slats (for a mattress stand);
  • Lamels - flexible boards 15-20 mm thick, made of hard wood (oak, acacia).

Before starting a baby crib project, you need to purchase materials.

Tools - a reliable assistant to the master

The complexity of the work depends not only on the design of the product and materials, but also on the availability of tools. Having, in your arsenal, a real carpentry workshop, you can easily make any product. But what if there is nothing but a garage and a workbench? Can I get started?

No problem! Everything that any man needs. And we need:

  • Drill, with a set of drills for wood;
  • Planer for cleaning wooden blanks;
  • Hacksaw for cutting;
  • A set of needle files for grooves.

A necessary set of tools, without which the entire project of work would be impossible.

The presence of a manual milling machine will greatly facilitate the work of assembling a crib, but if it is not there, we will get by with the listed ones.

The use of a manual router makes the job easier.

Some features of joinery

To make the furniture reliable, special carpentry joints are used in its manufacture. Unlike the usual nail or self-tapping fasteners, such fasteners are more resistant to loosening, do not “break apart”, and resist mechanical damage well.

The main task of choosing a connection method is decorative, the desire to make it beautiful, inconspicuous.

Such a connection consists of a blind or through groove and a shank that freely enters the groove. Fasten them with wood glue. The size of each groove and shank is selected individually, based on the thickness of the wooden workpiece (rail, beam, board).

When such a connection is made taking into account the location of the wood fibers, its texture, it seems that the product is made from a single piece of wood.

First, mark the boundaries of the groove or shank with a pencil. Then, with a hacksaw, an incision of the required depth for the shank is made, the groove is drilled with a drill. With the help of a chisel, excess wood is removed. The edges of the product are leveled with needle files.If there is a milling cutter, set the cutting depth and mill the necessary details. In addition, using the copying ring that comes with the machine, you can easily make grooves of the desired size.

Making a crib with your own hands

  1. We determine the size of the product. It is necessary to build on the dimensions of the mattress on which the child will sleep. We take a standard size - 1200x600 mm.

    The frame of the crib consists of the backs and the base itself, on which the mattress will be laid in the future.

  2. The lower part of the crib is defined so as not to interfere with the child to climb onto the bed. For children from 4 to 6 years old - this is 35 cm.

    Diagram of the footboard of the bed.

  3. Surface treatment. It is necessary to make the parts of the product, bringing them to the same size. The support frame will be a timber cut into 6 identical blanks with 25 mm grooves attached to secure the lamellas.

    The basis of the bed will be 4 boards 35 mm thick and 7 mm wide.

  4. We calculate the calculation of the back. To do this, add the thickness of the board to the width of the bed. If there is a railing, we make a tolerance of 25 mm, taking into account their volume.

    The scheme of the headboard of a children's bed.

  5. The rods for the back are made of a 20x20 mm rail. For fastening at the ends, we make a studded connection.

    Decorative headboard with legs for a children's bed.

  6. Assembling the frame. Boards, bed bases are interconnected with the help of shanks and grooves. For reliability, we strengthen the corners with metal corners, fastening them with bolts or self-tapping screws.

    The holes should have the same depth, which is half the length of this piece of wood.

  7. The base of the mattress is fastened with spiked joints to the bed frame.

    Before assembling the bed, you need to check the parts for chips and various defects.

  8. We insert the slats into the prepared grooves on the base of the mattress.

    It is not worth saving if there are not enough of them, in the future they will quickly break down.

  9. We attach the sides and back to the frame.

    After assembly, we clean the surface and varnish it at least three times.

Note! All studded joints are attached with wood glue. Under its influence, the tree is not only fastened, but also swells, securely fixing inside the groove.

Bed house - a cozy fairy tale

We all remember the unique feeling and mystery of huts made of bedspreads. So why not pamper the baby and improve his bed, "building" his own house for him, in which it is so comfortable to sleep?

To do this, during the manufacture of the back of the crib, we will make some adjustments.

Namely, by making the railing a little larger, after cutting off their tops at an angle of 75 0 with a hacksaw or end saw.We attach the bases of the "roof" of our house to them. It is better to fasten the connection with spikes, but given the complexity of such a product, self-tapping screws are also suitable, the main thing- don't forget to glue.

The last step will be the fastening of the ridge beam, which will connect the base of the frame of our "house".

Thus, the baby will receive a personal “fairy tale” made by the caring hands of the father, and the veil thrown over by the mother will serve as a reliable roof.

Put maximum effort, care and love into your product, and such a bed will give your child good dreams, and you - joy and satisfaction from the work done.

Of course, what we have described does not reflect all the subtleties of the process of making a children's bed with our own hands. During work, you will encounter many obstacles, you will have to think out the nuances more than once. However, we hope that the instructions for making simple furniture that can raise paternal authority to a new level will be useful to both the young dad and the head of the family with many children.

All photos from the article

Natural wood baby cribs for newborns today can be found in any furniture store. However, very often parents prefer to make this piece of furniture on their own: in this way, it will be possible to reduce costs by almost an order of magnitude, and choose the design that will fully meet our needs. And just to create something for your child yourself is very nice.

Naturally, the manufacture of such a crib is a rather complicated process, which should be undertaken only after thorough preparation. So if you have not previously encountered furniture work, we recommend that you carefully study the methodology described in the article.

Materials and tools

Blanks for main parts

Beds for newborns made of natural wood in furniture stores cost a lot, but the materials themselves for their manufacture can be purchased at a very reasonable price. So it turns out that if we have the skill, we can make premium furniture, spending about the same amount of money as we would need to buy the simplest MDF or chipboard bed.

For the manufacture of children's furniture, we will need:

  • Edged boards made of coniferous wood (spruce or pine).
  • Bars with a section of 30x50 mm for the manufacture of main frames.
  • Reiki with a section of 20x20 mm for the manufacture of filling.
  • Plywood (optimal thickness is about 5 mm).

Note! For bars and slats, it is best to take the most durable wood, such as beech or oak.

In addition, the work will be impossible without related materials:

  • Self-tapping screws (it is best to take phosphated products designed for woodworking).
  • Joiner's glue.
  • Putty for wood.
  • Steel corners for connecting parts.
  • Stain or other composition designed to impregnate wood and protect it from moisture.
  • Furniture varnish or interior paint.

As for decorating, here you are not limited in your imagination. For this purpose, it is worth using multi-colored ribbons, and textiles (canopy can be made from it), and complex compositions for artificial aging of wood.

In addition, we need a children's mattress. And here it is better not to save money, but to buy an orthopedic product in a specialized store. Of course, the price of such mattresses is quite high, but they really have a beneficial effect on the baby's emerging spine, so we take as high a quality model as the budget allows.

A set of tools for work

Despite the fact that a wooden crib is not difficult to design, we still need carpentry tools to make it. Of course, every master has most of them, but if any of the above is missing, then you should either buy it or rent it.

So, we will need:

  • Electric jigsaw or reciprocating saw for cutting boards and beams.
  • Sander.
  • Manual milling cutter with a set of nozzles.

Note! If possible, it is better to use a stationary router, but there will be little work for it.

  • File for wood.
  • Drill and screwdriver.
  • Measuring tools (tape measure, level).
  • Clamps for gluing workpieces.
  • Kisli and rollers for painting, varnishing or decorating.

Crib construction method

Making the basic elements

Solid wood cribs for newborns are usually made quite compact. The optimal dimensions of the product will be as follows:

Note! Small deviations from these dimensions are possible, but you should not make a bed either too large or too small.

We assemble the crib

If you performed all the operations described in the previous section on your own, then you will not need instructions for assembling the crib - you will already perfectly understand where each part is installed.

So below we will limit ourselves to only general recommendations:

  • First, we install the frame for the mattress on the backs. To do this, we attach metal corners to the frame of the side parts, on which we lay the lower support part on top.

Advice! For more reliable fixation, it is worth additionally fixing the frame with through screws, twisted through the crossbars in the backs.

  • Then install the far board. It can also be fixed with self-tapping screws, but if you want the structure to contain a minimum of slots, then you should first make sockets for spikes on the side cross members in the backs.
  • The near side is best made folding. To do this, we install two furniture hinges on the mattress frame, to which we attach the side frame.
  • We fix the board in the closed position with two latches, which we fix outside the crib.

Finishing and decoration

When our natural wood baby crib is ready, it should be decorated.

We carry out the work in the following sequence:

  • First, with the help of wood putty, we eliminate all defects and gaps between the parts. We wait until the putty mass dries, after which we carefully grind the leveled areas with an abrasive material with fine grains.
  • Then we impregnate all wooden parts with a stain or other compound designed to protect the wood from moisture and decay.

Important! Since we make children's furniture, impregnations should be used as natural as possible, not containing aggressive and toxic substances.

  • After the impregnation has dried, either open the bed with varnish, or paint it with latex or acrylic paint of the selected shade.
  • Also, for decoration, you can use the craquelure technologies that are popular today (artificial aging of paint), decoupage (sticking images printed on thin paper under a layer of varnish), etc.

So, the crib for the baby is ready, and we just have to put the previously purchased mattress into it.

Conclusion

Making a crib for newborns from solid wood according to the scheme described above will be possible even for a beginner in carpentry. However, the final result largely depends on your skill and accuracy, so for a more detailed study of the techniques and techniques, we recommend watching the video in this article.

Children grow up quickly, and now they need to create more adult, spacious sleeping conditions. It is very important to make a good bed for a girl with your own hands. A resting place must meet all the requirements of quality, safety and, of course, look aesthetically pleasing. After all, children spend more time in bed than adults. How a child sleeps depends on his well-being, mood, activity during the next day, desire and ability to learn, comprehend the world around him.

Important considerations when choosing a baby bed

  1. Having decided to make a bed for a girl or a boy, the main thing that adults should think about is the choice of materials. The best material for making furniture with your own hands is natural wood. It is an environmentally friendly, natural and durable raw material. Consider using pine, birch, alder, etc.
  2. Carefully consider the choice of bed design. Experts recommend the presence of spring bars at the base of the system. They allow you to properly distribute the load, ensure a comfortable position of the spine. An orthopedic mattress is laid on top of the slats. Sometimes the slats should be replaced with a solid coating, such as plywood. Whatever base you choose, consult with experts about the reliability of the material - your active child can not only sleep, but also jump on the bed.
  3. If the bed is intended for a child under 10 years old, take care of the safety of the bed. Do not make the bed too high, consider installing small removable side rails, plan the model without sharp corners, bumps.
  4. Many parents, saving room space, expand the functionality of the bed with various shelves, drawers for linen, cabinets, and hanging structures. While doing all this, one should not forget that the sleeping place should be well ventilated and, above all, adapted for good rest.

The requirements for children's and teenage beds apply equally to models for boys and girls. The external difference can be the decor of the bed itself, bed linen, accessories (carving, pillows, canopy, etc.). Therefore, when choosing the shape of the headboard, footboard, color and design of the wooden bed, consider the character, hobbies, taste preferences of the girl, as well as the interior of her room.

Preparing to make a bed

To assemble a bed for a girl yourself, start acquiring the materials that you will need to create a wooden product in a classic style.

  • 2 wooden blocks 10x10 cm, about 2.5 m long;
  • 4 planks 3x10 cm, 2.5 m long;
  • 4 boards 3x15 cm, 2.5 m long;
  • 1 board 5x10 cm, length 2.5 m;
  • 1 plank 5x15 cm 2.5 meters long.
  • 3 wooden planks 5x10 cm, 2.5 m long;
  • 2 boards 3x25 cm long 2.5 m;
  • wooden beam 50x50 mm;
  • 8 cm screws;
  • 3 cm nails;
  • special glue for wood materials;
  • putty;
  • sandpaper with different grain sizes;
  • ground cover;
  • water-based acrylic paint in white (or another color that suits you);
  • brush.

Prepare carpentry and auxiliary tools for work: a tape measure, a square, a pencil, a drill with a set of drills and special nozzles, a circular saw, a device for attaching to nails, a grinder.

Proceed to cutting wooden parts in accordance with the lists below. If for some reason you cannot make blanks, order sawing of wood material at the place of purchase.

For the head of the bed:

  • 2 parts-legs 10x10 cm long, 1.37 m each;
  • 4 blanks for forming a panel 3x10, 98 cm long;
  • 7 panel boards 3x10 cm, 76 cm each;
  • 1 blank 5x10 cm, length 11.6 m - upper bar above the legs and panel;
  • 1 detail of the upper part of the headboard 5x15 cm, length 12.1 m.

For foot:

  • 2 legs 10x10 cm, 53 cm long;
  • 4 parts forming a panel, 3x10 cm, 98 cm long;
  • 7 panel boards 3x15 cm each 38 cm long;
  • 1 plank for installation above the legs and footboard panel 5x10 cm, length 11.6 m;
  • 1 upper part of the footboard 5x15 cm, length 12.1 m.

For mattress base:

  • 2 elements of the side parts of the base 5x10 centimeters long, 20.5 m each;
  • 2 side panels 3x25 cm, length 19.4 m;
  • 2 blanks of the short sides of the base 5x10 cm, 90 cm long.

Before proceeding with the assembly of the bed with a grinder, remove burrs from the workpieces, level the surfaces. Prepare your workspace. To do this, select the most even surface, remove dirt, dust, and unnecessary objects from it.

Assembly instructions

  1. Build a headboard, focusing on its schematic representation below. First, assemble the inside of the panel from 7 boards 76 cm long. Align the planks, tightly connect them together with glue and 3 cm nails.
  2. On both sides, fasten the planks of the panel (at the ends of the planks) by installing them with screws and glue perpendicular to the edges of the board 98 cm.
  3. Place the entire central part between the leg blanks. Drill holes, apply glue, connect with 8 cm screws. The top edge of the panel and the ends of the legs should form one line. After each step, use a square to check the 90 degree connection/parts angle.
  4. Install a 11.6 m long bar on the screws and glue. Drill the holes in advance, countersink them so that the screw heads do not protrude above the level of the wood. Make a connection. Wipe off excess adhesive immediately. This will allow the paint to cover the wood evenly in the final finish.
  5. The final assembly step. Install a 12.1 m long plank on top of the structure. Align the position of the part so that the edges protrude from all sides above the surface of the headboard by approximately 30 mm. Since this part performs only a decorative role, glue and finishing nails will be enough for fastening.
  6. In the same sequence, assemble the footboard from the prepared parts using nails, screws and glue.

If you have a ready-made metal frame under the mattress, this will simplify the work and help you finish it earlier. You will need to build only the side wooden panels. If you are going to make a completely wooden frame, continue assembling.

  1. Connect the footboard and headboard by installing 19.6 m long wooden panels. To do this, mark the parts. Prepare holes for 8 cm screws. Apply glue. Connect the details.
  2. Attach the inner slats for the mattress base to the panel with screws and glue. Position them 30-40 mm from the bottom edge of the panel.
  3. Attach short ones (90 cm each) to the ends of the long rails. Fasten from the inside so that the ends of the 8 cm screws go into the wood of the leg. Use glue.

Make a place under the mattress in a way that suits you best. You can install on screws with a distance of 15 cm from one another rails of 50x50 mm strips, order a ready-made base from lamellas, use another option. Consider the recommendations of experts on this issue and the characteristics of your child (weight, habits, activity, etc.).

Shutdown

Before you start finishing the finished bed, decide on how to decorate it. The surface can be decorated with carved elements, gilding using decoupage, transferring a floral or other image to the headboard. Paint in bright pink, red or purple. In this project, we offer a classic universal finish that will suit any interior:

  1. Fill with putty recesses, screw holes, unevenness on the surface of the wood.
  2. Leave the product until the putty dries.
  3. Sand the details of the bed.
  4. Remove the dust. Apply a coat of primer.
  5. After the composition dries, paint the bed.
  6. Apply 1 or 2 more coats of water-based acrylic paint for even and rich color.

It remains only to put the mattress, make the bed, using decorative pillows, bedspreads. This bed will become your girl's favorite place in the house.

Children grow up fast and furniture is quite expensive. In an ordinary crib, a child can sleep for three, maximum four years. Soon again you will have to buy an expensive bed that meets the standards of safety and comfort. The bed should be as comfortable and functional as possible. In fact, a do-it-yourself bed for a child is made “at once”, you can do it 🙂

To make a crib with your own hands, you do not need any professional skills, and the process will take a maximum of 3-4 days. Drawings and photos for manufacturing are provided on the Internet. It can be seen from them: the process of making a crib is simple and exciting. The main thing is to use only high-quality materials and carefully consider the whole process from start to finish. As a result, both the child and the baby himself will be satisfied. In this case, instructions for making a crib for a five-year-old child are provided. Of course, he can sleep in it for up to seven years. But if the baby has a large physique, the parameters of the blanks can be changed upwards.

On the video: an overview of the crib. Important points, constructive solutions, useful tricks.

Benefits of a DIY crib

In furniture stores there are a huge variety of models of beds for different ages. You can see cribs made of wood, chipboard, fiberboard and plastic. Exclusive models made of artificial and natural rattan are provided, photos of which can be seen in the catalogs. But the first factor in choosing a crib for a child should be the material from which the piece of furniture is made.

The crib must be made entirely of solid wood. It can provide the necessary strength and durability. We pay attention to the processing of corners and the safety of all surfaces. If necessary, we clean the shields over the entire surface.

The only drawback of wooden furniture sold in most stores is the "sky-high" cost. A good model of such a bed will cost about 25 thousand rubles, and not everyone considers such costs appropriate, given that the bed will serve the child for a maximum of 4 years.

A do-it-yourself baby bed will cost parents a maximum of 17 thousand. This is taking into account that the highest quality and environmentally friendly materials will be used. Independent design and manufacture of a crib has the following advantages over buying a finished product in a furniture store:

  • you have the opportunity to design a model that fits perfectly into the interior of the room and will have the necessary parameters, the height of the sides and the size of the drawers;
  • confidence in the quality of a piece of furniture. If the child jumps on the bed, you will not worry that its bottom will accidentally break right under it;
  • pleasure from the process of creating a crib. The kid will even be able to help dad in this important process.

Materials and tools

Before acquiring the necessary materials and tools, you should carefully consider the entire process of creating a piece of furniture. Consider whether you are really ready to complete this process. It is better to do all the work outside the home, as it will be quite difficult to get rid of dust and sawdust. If it is not possible to retire in a separate room, cover all upholstered furniture with polyethylene and remove the carpet from the floor.

You should find detailed drawings of the crib with step-by-step photos on the Internet or magazines. But if you have experience in carpentry, and have previously encountered furniture design, you can do without them. The main thing is to make drawings accurate to the centimeter.

Then we proceed to the purchase of materials. We will need:

  • furniture boards made of wood;
  • aluminum corners;
  • self-tapping screws of different calibers;
  • wheels for boxes;
  • a lattice base for a crib, which can be replaced with a sheet of good quality ordinary plywood.

From the tools you will need a drill, a jigsaw and a grinder. You should also get a piece of sandpaper for processing corners and cuts.

All materials can be easily purchased at a hardware store. You need to buy another mattress, for a child it is better to choose a good, high quality orthopedic mattress.

Quality mattresses are provided on the Internet at affordable prices, their photos and characteristics will allow you to get acquainted with the products in detail. Even with this purchase, the cost of the bed will remain more acceptable than when buying a finished product in a store.

In order for the dimensions of the mattress and the crib to match, it is better to first buy a mattress, and only after that proceed to the drawings of the crib.

Instructions for making a crib with your own hands

After you decide on the size and appearance of the bed for the child, view photos of popular models on the Internet and find the necessary drawings, you can start making the royal bed for the baby.

The instructions for making a crib are as follows:

  • we mark all the details on wooden shields. It is better to use a regular slate pencil, which, if necessary, can be easily washed off with a sponge and detergent. Do not forget to immediately mark the sides and a higher headboard: otherwise it will have to be mounted additionally in the future;
  • cut out all the details with a jigsaw. Here we carefully monitor the even cut line. We seal the cut edges with paper tape;
  • if you decide to draw complex shapes on the side of the crib and its headboard, you can use improvised means as a form. For example - a plate, a glass or a bottle;
  • in accordance with the length of the sides, we cut out aluminum corners and drill 4-5 holes for self-tapping screws in them;
  • We screw the corners to the bottom of the sides so that the base of the mattress lies on them. At the same time, they will increase the strength of the structure;
  • to connect all parts of the crib, it is better to put it on its side;
  • we process decorative holes (if any) with sandpaper, it is better to do the same with sharp corners;
  • if the shields are made with high quality, their surface will be smooth and will not require additional processing. But for beauty, the crib can be opened with a primer and varnish. Although one impregnation of a pleasant shade will be enough;
  • to fasten parts, it is better to use special ties instead of ordinary self-tapping screws. This is both safer and more convenient;
  • collect drawers. The best option is two large drawers so that you can put large toys and bedding in them;
  • if desired, you can make low legs for the crib, while you should not forget about the metal corners for them;
  • We lay the mattress on the base and lay the bed linen. Baby crib with your own hands is ready.
    By the way, you can order a saw cut of materials at a hardware store, having previously reported all the dimensions of the parts.
