Transform an old kitchen table. We are restoring an old round table with our own hands

Often this old piece of furniture in the kitchen that has lost its presentation, which clearly falls out of the general style of the room, is a reason for controversy: it seems like it’s time to replace it so as not to spoil the interior - however, it’s a pity to throw it away, and the funds do not allow furniture to be “scattered”. even if it has served a considerable period of time.

Dilemma: restoration or decoration?

An old, but still sturdy dining table, especially if it is made of metal or solid wood, could have served for a very long time if it had not been for a work surface that has suffered from time and long use, or a design that no longer suits the style of a new kitchen.

All work on the return to life of this important part of the kitchen interior, with the restoration of normal functions or their change, can be divided into three categories:

  • Restoration;
  • Restoration with a change in design;
  • Decorating.

On the options for how to update an old kitchen table with your own hands in the best way, you should dwell in more detail.

Restoration. This type of work is carried out if the furniture is ideally suited to the interior of the kitchen, however, it has lost its presentable appearance during long-term operation, or the strength of the structure has suffered from time to time.

Before proceeding with the restoration, you need to stock up on the following materials and tools:

  • Grinder, sandpaper of various grain sizes;
  • Glue for wood or metal (depending on the material of the underframe);
  • Putty for the underframe material, primer;
  • Special paint of the desired color (for wood or metal), intended for interior use, as well as a small roller and brushes.

If the frame is metal, then the restoration process consists of the following stages:

  1. Dismantling the countertop;
  2. Cleaning the surface from the old coating;
  3. Puttying the surface for better staining - a special composition of the putty for metal allows you to make the surface smoother, protecting it from oxidation in the future;
  4. Grinding - necessary in order to remove various roughness to prepare the surface for painting;
  5. Priming - can be done using special compounds, or you can use a base paint with the addition of a solvent;
  6. The frame paintwork must consist of at least two layers. Moreover, each new layer of paint is applied to the already dried previous layer.
  7. A worktop for a restored metal frame can be made as follows:

When restoring wooden furniture, the sequence of stages does not change. However, before proceeding with the restoration of such a surface, it is necessary to strengthen the entire structure of the product:

  1. Carefully inspect all connection nodes, if necessary, fix them with glue, furniture corners or confirmations (furniture screed). If there are moving joints, check their functionality. If the mechanism is damaged: repair it, replace it, and if such a function is not important, make the unit static.
  2. Remove the remaining decorative elements and accessories, which may be damaged during further work;
  3. The tabletop, if it is not planned to replace it, cannot be dismantled.
  4. Next, you should get rid of the old coating - carefully sand all surfaces, including the internal elements of the frame;
  5. If there are potholes and chips on the surfaces to be restored, or cracked seams at the joints, you need to putty them with a special acrylic putty. It is better to level the tabletop with a special composition: mix small sawdust into PVA glue or wood glue and fill the existing grooves with this mixture. After the glue has dried, sand all structural elements again;
  6. If the surface was leveled so that the defects became invisible, and the tree retained its original structure, you can cover the table with tinting (transparent acrylic paints that give any shade to the wood and do not hide the pattern of its fibers);
  7. After applying the first layer of paint, all structural elements should be carefully sanded - to remove the upturned wood fibers;
  8. The next 2 layers of paint are applied at intervals of several hours (so that each has time to dry);
  9. Finishing - varnishing: for kitchen furniture it is necessary to choose a special varnish that gives a coating that is resistant to mechanical and temperature influences.
  10. After the varnish is completely dry, the work surface of the table must be covered with several layers of wax - this will give it additional water-repellent properties.
  1. Remove all dirt (especially grease stains) with detergents. Dry thoroughly.
  2. Using a grinder, clean the surface, getting rid of the old varnish coating - the paint does not adhere well to it.
  3. Apply a primer (preferably one that protects the wood from moisture penetration) - using a roller, brush or aerosol. Be sure to let it dry well.
  4. Paint in the desired color 2-3 times, applying layers as evenly as possible, giving each of them time to dry. After applying the last layer, leave the product to dry for at least 24 hours.
  5. Apply wax paste and, using a cotton napkin, rub thoroughly into the worktop in a circular motion - repeat the procedure 2-3 times to get a matte non-sticky surface.

Your old table in a new look is ready: you need to let it stand for about a day without work, and it will serve you for more than one year!

Restoration with redesign

Such a design is another way to make a new, more spacious one from an old kitchen table.

You can go this way if you bought a new table in the kitchen, and the old one is still good enough to throw it away.

In addition, you can simply restore it by adding a "zest" to the structure. How to update an old kitchen table with your own hands in this way is shown in the photo - the process itself requires a somewhat more detailed description.

To make changes to the design, we need:

Chipboard sheet, 2 legs for legs, 2 chipboard slats - all of such size to make a table that fits under the old kitchen table in size. It is better to screw the wheels to the legs of the small table - this will make it more convenient to use it, and the floor covering will be preserved better.

For the screed, 6 confirmations and 2 furniture corners will be needed, and to combine the two structures - 2 aluminum corners equal to the width of the larger table.

In addition, we need: putty for wood, enamel in 2 matching shades, varnish and wax paste for finishing surfaces.

Rest assured that the “out-of-the-box” dining space will gain immense popularity among the younger family members - here children will be more comfortable because of the smaller difference between the height of the chair and the table top.

Decorating - for every taste, style and ... wallet

This method of "reanimating" the kitchen table is the most exciting, having a variety of ways with the use of the most unexpected materials. When thinking about how to update an old kitchen table with your own hands using decoration, you must remember about the strength of the coating being performed - the surface must be resistant to temperature changes, mechanical stress, and must also be easy to clean.

For decoration, you can use the decoupage method, drawing up various collages on the table top (especially if you use glass as a protective coating on the table top), painting and stencil prints.

We offer you another, in our opinion, very interesting option - decoration with smalt. This solution will be even more original if the work surface of your masterpiece is made of the same mosaic tiles as the kitchen backsplash.

We will need:

  • Remains of smalt left over from the apron, or several matrices (according to the size of the table). As a rule, matrices with tiles have dimensions of 300x300 mm, and the size of smalt squares can vary from 10x10 mm to 20x20 mm;
  • Tile adhesive, grout and old waffle towel
  • Masking tape, spatula and scissors;
  • Paint of one of the shades of smalt (for wood); end tape (better than ABS);
  • Varnish and wax paste for finishing worktops;

1st step. Restoration and painting of surfaces - the actions are similar for all similar products and are given above.
2nd step. We glue the ends of the countertop with masking tape, and on the countertop itself, apply a thick layer of tile glue with a spatula, level it, and carefully lay the matrices with mosaics, pre-adjusted in size and color. Press gently, trying not to dislodge the pieces. Care must be taken to ensure that the ends of the table top (taking into account the thickness of the smalt) remain even. Leave the tiles to dry.
3rd step. We make grouting. To do this, apply the grout diluted to the desired consistency on the mosaic, level it with a spatula, removing excess grout with it. Let it dry a little, and then remove the grout from the smalt with a damp sponge.

An old table, loose and shriveled, and besides, squeaky, like an unlubricated cart, and itching to send your hands to a fire or to a landfill. But if you work on it a little, you can get a very good furniture accessory, such as a coffee table (if you shorten the legs to a certain length), or a TV table. In my shed lay on a shelf, forgotten by everyone, an ordinary kitchen table. Disassembled. Four bolted legs, a wooden base held together with metal staples, and three pieces of a table top.

Having examined this rarity, at first I decided to send it to the garbage truck; after lying for a long time, fragments of the countertop made of chipboard swelled under the influence of moisture, and after drying, of course, they did not return to their original form. Moreover, besides, they became fragile and sawdust fell from them, from which they, in fact, were made ...

The wooden base, on the contrary, shrunk to the point that it walked with a shake, as if it were alive, it was worth picking it up! After a little thought, I decided, nevertheless, to try to "reanimate" him. One way or another, I won't lose much if I fail.

It will take

  • Hacksaw.
  • Gas wrench or pliers.
  • Universal glue (you can "Moment").
  • Composite adhesive (cold welding).
  • Cyan acrylate glue (super glue).
  • Marker.
  • Drill and drills for 4 and 9.
  • Long ruler (or level with ruler markings).
  • Four thick hexagon socket screws.
  • A small chipboard sheet for a new worktop.
  • Decorative self-adhesive foil for cladding countertops (with a pattern of your choice).

Restoring an old table

First you need to disassemble the wooden base. Unscrew all existing screws, remove metal brackets.

Our table will be half the size of the previous one, which means that those crossbeams that used to be the width of the table will now become its long.

You can choose the width of the new table yourself, according to your taste. You can make it even square! To do this, take the remaining long crossbeams and shorten them to the desired width of the future table.

Just count on the width of the future table to be at least half of its length, otherwise it will be unstable! Now, at the sawn-off ends of the beams, we will make the grooves for the metal staples with a hacksaw, as it was before.

Next, we will deal with the holes left over from the screws after disassembling the table. Most of these holes will be back in their original places, and so that the screws holding the metal brackets hold well in them, we will use matches and all-purpose glue. We dip the match in glue (or drip glue into the hole), push it all the way into the hole, and break it off.

It turned out to be a kind of plug-chepik. Now the screw will hold well in this hole, and the table will not wobble. Well, so that the "new" table does not creak - drop a drop of machine oil on the contact points of all separate fragments of the table, both wooden and metal. Now we will deal with the legs. If a threaded connection is unscrewed at these legs, it is advisable to unscrew it from the leg. Coat the threads with composite or universal glue and screw back.

All the way. If the connection dangles, but does not twist (it also happens when the threaded pin has a “T” -shaped end inside the leg), then you will have to use cyan acrylate (super glue). We drip it into the gap between the joint and the wood until it stops going inside. Leave the glued legs to dry. For a couple of hours, so that the composite glue has time to grab. (By the way, the legs can also be shortened to the height you need, planed with a plane, narrow them down if they are square, and covered with wood stain.) During this time, you can assemble a wooden base; we fasten the prepared crossbars with staples and screws.

After the time allotted for the hardening of the composite glue, we screw the legs to the base. As before to the old table.

Now we take the prepared chipboard sheet (I took the end wall from the old cabinet for this purpose), cut out the countertop of the required area and sand the sawn edges with sandpaper or a file on wood.

We put the countertop on a flat surface with the front (smoothest!) Side down. We put the base on top of the tabletop, legs up and mark the corners of the legs with a marker.

We remove the base and drill 4 mm holes in each corner, so that the holes fall into the centers of the legs. Now we put the base on the legs, put the countertop on it, and look from below so that the marks made earlier with a marker come together. Now, along the holes in the tabletop, we drill the holes further - inside the leg, by the length of the screw.

Well, with an eight millimeter drill, we make small depressions-sweat over the holes for the screw heads and screw in the screws.

We cover the screw head with composite glue so that the tabletop has an even surface. You can pre-lubricate the surface of the recess, and the screw head in it, with machine oil, then you can easily pick out these resulting plugs in the future in order to dismantle the table, if necessary.

We are waiting for the composite glue to dry and, in the end, glue the countertop with an adhesive decorative film.

Paste with self-adhesive wallpaper should be as careful as possible; there won't be a second chance to re-stick. To do this, we had to dismantle the table (fortunately, it’s not long - unscrew four screws and unscrew four nuts!). I humidified the air in the room with a spray, so that dust particles do not fall on the glued surface, and do not form irregularities and bubbles after the work done. He wiped the surface with alcohol, and carefully, starting from one of the corners, smoothing the film in different directions from the corner with a dry cloth, on each part in turn, glued the film. If the bubbles still cannot be avoided, pierce them with a thin needle in several places, place an ordinary kitchen napkin on the bubble and put a flat-bottomed mug filled with boiling water in this place. For one or two minutes. After this procedure, the bubble will disappear. And one moment; Having pasted over the tabletop, I changed my mind about hiding the screw heads - I really liked the way the shiny metal heads look, sunk in the texture of the "stone".

But this is an individual matter for everyone. If someone doesn't like it, you can hide the hats. Also cover them with glue and stick on top of the patch cut from the same film ... This is how the table was (in size!):

And so it became - small and compact:

It will fit well into the interior of a small room in a country house. In my opinion, it turned out well. Even very good!

Today it is expensive to buy a new coffee table. Especially when it comes to a coffee table, which should be not only functional, but also sophisticated and beautiful. Therefore, experts are developing more and more ways of how a table can be restored with their own hands.

Before restoring the table, you need to clean its surface from old paint and repair all cracks and chips.

There are a lot of methods. It is conventionally accepted to divide them for different types of tables according to their purpose. But with the same success, you can apply to the coffee table the methods that are usually used for decorating kitchen or dressing tables. As practice shows, it looks very original.

Surface preparation

Before proceeding with the consideration of individual decorating methods, it is advisable to study how to prepare the surface. After all, this step is the same for all tables, regardless of which method of restoration you choose in the future.

The old coating must be removed first. It is risky to use solvents as they can damage the wood fiber. This is especially true for valuable antique pieces of furniture. In this case, it is best to use a coarse sandpaper and a sander.

As for the legs, if they are carved, you need to carefully sand them with special pieces of sandpaper for hard-to-reach places. It is strictly forbidden to rip off the old coating with screwdrivers, chisels and knives. These tools can damage the finish.

To level the surface of the table, it is necessary to cover it with a layer of primer.

If the legs are still quite problematic to clean due to their shallow relief, then you can use a thin wire mesh. And if that doesn't work, then you can use a little solvent. Only it is necessary to work with it very carefully, wrapping a bandage on a match and dipping it in a solvent.

When all the old coating has been removed, all cracks and flaws need to be well sealed. To do this, you need to use wood putty. But first, the entire table is covered with a primer, which will protect the wood from damage, and will subsequently give better adhesion to the putty and finishing material. When the primer is absorbed, you can work with the putty.

A small spatula is used for work. The putty can be used both ordinary white and special colored - here everything will depend on how you intend to restore the table further. After the putty has dried, sand it all again with a weak sandpaper and re-coat with a thin layer of primer.

The table is ready.

Consider two main options for restoring a coffee table with your own hands.

They are considered the easiest for beginners and not so expensive in terms of money, which is especially important in conditions of limited resources.

Back to the table of contents

Table restoration with paint and varnish

The first option is to cover the surface with paint or varnish. So, the paint needs to be stirred well first. Then take a soft brush and paint slowly along the grain of the wood. Note that the upper part is painted over first, after which you should gradually go down. This is very important to observe, since otherwise it will simply not be possible to avoid non-decorative smudges.

The paint must be applied in two thin layers so that the putty does not shrink and is not visible under the paint. When you apply the paint, wait until it dries, then cover the table as described above, but only with a transparent varnish. If you want to see a sparkling gloss, then the varnish is applied in two or even three layers. If you want a more natural matte surface - just one layer will be enough.

Do-it-yourself table restoration is possible not only with paint, but also with varnish, as well as with special solutions that give a silver, gold or bronze tint. And it looks very sophisticated, especially on antique tables.

Back to the table of contents

Mosaic restoration

The second option is to cover the table top with mosaics. Mosaics are now available in different types. For a coffee table, which will be located in a classic-style living room, you can choose a mosaic with some kind of ancient or city landscape. If you want to place a table in the bedroom, you can choose more tranquil romantic patterns such as flowers, hearts, angels or cute birds and animals.

So, first, the table is covered with a base, which will be the paint of the selected color. It is important to choose a shade contrasting with the future mosaic - either very dark or very light. This will make the pattern look brighter and more natural.

After the paint has dried (and this is at least 2 days), it is necessary to stir well the PVA glue or special tile adhesive for mosaic. After that, you immediately need to press the mosaic strictly according to the instructions so that the drawing is correct. For greater fidelity, you can coat the mosaic on the reverse side, only the glue layer in this case should be very thin.

About a day after the mosaic has set, grout should be done. For this, a special tool is used in the form of a powder or paste, which matches the pattern. You can also use a color-contrasting grout, which in some cases looks good.

Before grouting, experts recommend using masking tape to glue the edges of the tiles so that they do not get very dirty. The grout itself is done either with a small spatula or with a sponge. It all depends on which remedy you have chosen. After finishing work, wait until the grout dries, remove the adhesive tape from the mosaic and remove any residues that have accidentally gotten onto the mosaic with a cloth.

The legs in such a table can simply be painted with paint or varnish, since the mosaic will no longer be appropriate here. The color of the legs is selected according to your taste. But it is best if it will differ favorably from the main drawing. You can simply cover them with a tinted varnish, which will highlight the naturalness of the wood.

So, two ways to restore a coffee table are considered. Of course, there are many more options: this is a decoupage technique, and wallpapering, and decorating with oilcloth. But the methods described above are basic. Once you learn how to do them, doing the rest will be easier.

It is sometimes expensive to buy good furniture. If you have an old table that you do not use, because its appearance has deteriorated over the years, we will tell you a few simple ways to return it to its former beauty with your own hands, and, perhaps, make it a highlight of your interior.

Before decorating the table, in one way or another, you need to inspect it in order to assess its condition, then carry out the necessary repair work with your own hands, and then prepare the surface for decoration.

How to prepare the tabletop?

Surface preparation - obligatory stage of restoration... It is produced in the following sequence:

Option 1. Coating with paint and varnish

This option great for beginners, it will not require any special knowledge or skills from you.

Sequencing:

A simple do-it-yourself table restoration for beginners is now complete.

And since there is many different technologies for the restoration and alteration of furniture, we will consider other options.

Option 2. Facing with a mosaic

If tabletop in use was scratched, or dents appeared on its surface, you can revet it with your own hands with a mosaic that will hide all defects and return the table to its former beauty.

  2. Degrease the countertops and legs with alcohol or acetone.
  3. Sand and sand the surfaces.
  4. Places that cannot be sanded, putty and then sand.
  5. Cover all surfaces with a coat of paint. Leave until dry. For work, it is better to use spray paint.
  6. Apply glue in a good layer on the table surface.
  7. Cut the mosaic and glue the mesh down. Press down the mosaic and smooth it down. Postpone work until the glue has completely hardened.
  8. Gently glue the painted edges with tape and grout the mosaic.
  9. Wipe the table surface with a damp sponge.
  10. After a day, wipe the table with a small amount of vegetable oil.

Our do-it-yourself mosaic table is ready.

Option 3. Decorating with a pattern

If the table top has no obvious defects, then it is quite possible to do with decorating the surface with drawings.

We need:

Work order:

  1. We grind the old surface, sand and putty.
  2. We paint the countertop with paint in the base color.
  3. We apply a drawing. You can use a special stencil, apply asymmetrical multi-colored splashes, or depict an elaborate ornament. You can make colorful stripes by gluing tape in straight lines to the countertop and painting over the stripes between the tape.
  4. After the drawing is completely dry, cover the finished tabletop with varnish and leave to dry.

A table decorated with do-it-yourself drawings can be used for its intended purpose.

Option 4. Decorating with wallpaper

One of the most simple, budgetary ways furniture surface restoration - wallpapering the table-top.

To do this, you will need:

Procedure:

  1. Degrease the countertop.
  2. Cover the surface with paint and leave to dry.
  3. We measure and cut out a sheet of wallpaper to the size of the countertop.
  4. We glue the wallpaper, carefully smoothing it to avoid the appearance of irregularities and bubbles.
  5. We fold the ends of the wallpaper under the tabletop and glue it.
  6. On top of the wallpaper, if desired, you can apply a frame or some kind of drawing.
  7. Fix the wallpaper with nails along the contour.
  8. Cover the product with varnish and leave to dry.

Decorating the countertop with do-it-yourself wallpaper is complete.

Option 5. Decoupage

Decoupage technique is perfect suitable for restoration old furniture. On sale there is a huge variety of napkins and decoupage applications. Using this technology, you can decorate not only the table top of the table, but also the sides and even the legs.

Prepare for work:

  • Decoupage napkins
  • PVA glue
  • Brush

If napkins for decoupage you could not find, instead of drawing from them, you can transfer an image from newspapers or magazines to the surface of the table.

Procedure:

  1. Preparing the table surface.
  2. We transfer the drawing with glue to the countertop and other surfaces. We are waiting for everything to dry.
  3. We cover the table with varnish.

It remains to wait until it is completely dry and the table design using decoupage technique is ready.

Option 6. Restoration by varnishing

If your the table hasn't suffered too much from time, however, its appearance is no longer very good, and varnishing requires replacement, you can do this:

After a week, our refurbished table is ready.

Other ways to restore old tables

  1. Stick a self-adhesive film on the table surface.
  2. Cover the tabletop with oilcloth, nailing it under the table with a construction stapler.
  3. If the table top cannot be repaired, you can replace it with glass and install a beautiful backlight from below or cover the table surface with ceramic tiles.

As seen from practice table restoration process does not tolerate fuss. A lot of time can pass between the start of work and the receipt of the finished result. But if you approach the matter with all responsibility and thoroughness, your table will turn out to be no worse than a new one.

To add gloss, exclusiveness and chic, to make an unusual accent in the interior, you can use the original table. Moreover, no one will guess that this piece of furniture used to be an unprepossessing ruin.

Restoration methods

There are many ways to improve, decorate, and refurbish an old table. But before starting work, you need to prepare the future "canvas" - remove the old coating, sand it, screw all the nuts and screws (so as not to stagger or dangle), putty, stain (if necessary) or varnish. Then start decorating. Conventionally, all methods of decorating a wooden table can be divided into two groups:

    Surface painting, including self-painting, painting through a stencil or using stamps;

    Pasting the surface special materials - wallpaper, self-adhesive film, decoupage with napkins or interesting clippings, overlaying with gold leaf, photo printing, the use of mosaics or tiles.

The glass table will have to be updated a little differently. It is quite possible to glue it with wallpaper, film or make decoupage from the inside.

You can also paint the glass surface with special paints and get an interesting design.

How to upgrade a glass table?

A beautiful glass coffee table is quite common in modern apartments. As a result of improper care, the glass tabletop loses its attractive appearance.

The legs are loose, chips and scratches appear on the glass. If there are scratches on the tabletop, in which a nail can fit, then it is better to take the table to a special workshop, dispose of or replace the glass with a new one.

If the damage is not so terrible, then you can try to reanimate this piece of furniture.

You can save a glass countertop from scratches at home both with improvised (toothpaste, soda, transparent nail polish) and with special means (GOI paste, car polishes, precious metals polishing agents).

First you need to clean the surface, then gently rub in or apply the composition into the scratch. Do not overdo it, otherwise you may get several more instead of one scratch. Wait a little for the compound to set and clean the glass again.

To get rid of scratches, use the most common non-gel toothpaste. Soda is dissolved with water to the state of gruel, approximately in a ratio of 1: 1. GOI paste must be used proven, real. Transparent varnish will not completely eliminate the problem, but only partially. At a certain angle of illumination, it will be noticeable that there were scratches in that place.

Loose table legs are also subject to repair. Usually, the table legs are attached with special glue. This glue can dry out over time. It can be removed and replaced with new adhesive. If the legs are attached to screws, self-tapping screws, then they can be unscrewed and replaced with new ones.

Now the table can be given a completely new sound using various decorating techniques:

    Paste over the table from the seamy side with decorative foil. Avoid bubbles when covering the table. It is better to glue the film a little, gradually pushing back the substrate. If bubbles do appear, then you can pierce them with a needle and smooth them out;

    Make decoupage. To do this, you will need pictures (for example, from napkins or on rice paper, or images specially prepared for this), PVC glue or special for these works, brushes, a file, varnish for decoupage. The necessary equipment can be purchased in shops for creativity and scrapbooking;

    Paint with stained glass paints. Acrylic outline, stained glass paints, cotton swabs and napkins, alcohol for degreasing the surface, a sketch of a drawing, scotch tape - this is a set of items that will be needed for this work;

    Fix the lighting, LED strip around the table perimeter;

    If the design allows you to make a mini-garden, an aquarium or a bright composition of stones, shells. When the table has a small box, which is covered with a tabletop on top, then you can put a pallet on its bottom and plant succulents (plants that do not need frequent watering) there. Or decorate the box with shells, stones, or other items.

How to restore a wooden table?

A wooden table can be made from MDF or chipboard, or from solid wood. In any case, the restoration of the old table at home will take place in several stages. Let's take a look at all these steps.

    Preparatory- check all fasteners, disassemble the table and reattach, clean the surface.

    Removing the old coating. Sometimes for this you may only need a special composition that removes varnish and paint. But most often you also have to use coarse and fine-grained sandpaper, a sander. It is necessary to sand along the grain to avoid the formation of new scratches.

    Sealing cracks and chips. To do this, you will need wood putty or polyester analog. After filling, re-sanding. At this stage, you can stop and not carry out further work (except varnishing), cover the wood with wood stain, which will give the table a new color and look. For example, turn an oak table into an imitation of wenge or another type of wood. But when the damage is significant, the next step is necessary.

    Primer and subsequent puttying. Without a primer, the varnish will lie poorly and unevenly. An alkyd or shellac primer is suitable for wood.

    Giving the final design. At this stage, painting, pasting of the table is carried out. If the table is painted, the paint should be applied in at least 2 coats.

    Final coating with varnish or wax. Varnish and wax should be covered in several layers.

This refurbished polished table will last for years to come.

Written or magazine, children's or toilet - regardless of its purpose, it will become an interior decoration, because you spent so much time on it and put your soul into it.

How to recolor?

Table staining is the most popular restoration method. What could be more laconic than a white table? Only black. Therefore, the choice of paint (acrylic or oil, enamel) is very important. How long the restored table will serve depends on what paint the repair was made, or rather on its characteristics.

To choose a paint, you need to understand where and how the table will be used, what materials it is made of.

    Water-based acrylic paint suitable for heated rooms, withstands moisture well. Dries quickly. Can be washed off with water during application. But after drying, it does not lend itself to water. Alkyd compounds are considered more reliable.

    Oil paints are losing their popularity due to an unreasonably high expense.

    Wood enamels attract with their glossy surface and high performance. In addition, nitro enamel paints set quickly.

The paint was selected and purchased; further repair of the table presupposes its coloring.

The surfaces must be pretreated, cleaned, removed the old coating, removed scratches and chips, putty, primed, protect decorative inserts, for example, made of glass, with tape. And only after the primer has dried can you paint.

To give an even color, the paint is applied in several layers. The first layer is actually rubbed into the surface.

Two or three layers are enough for a rich color to show through.

To apply an additional pattern to the countertop, you can use pre-prepared stencils or the most ordinary tulle. When the base color has dried, the tulle (or stencil) is fixed and the pattern paint is applied. You can do this with a brush, but it is better to use a sponge or a spray can of paint. The finished product is varnished to make it more aesthetically pleasing and to strengthen the surface.

To give a graphic pattern (lines, zigzags, rhombuses, squares), you can use scotch tape. Mark the future drawing with adhesive tape, apply the first color with paint. If necessary, repeat the procedure with other colors. Varnish the finished worktop.

If it is necessary to achieve the effect of aged wood, then first a special composition is applied to the treated surface (cleaned, sanded and primed).

Patination can be done with a dark stain. Then the first coat of paint is applied to the wood. Then a second layer of lighter and more liquid paint is applied. When the paint is dry, we go over the surface of the sandpaper. The desired effect has been achieved.

The table is ready for finishing with varnish.

We update the plastic table

Many are afraid to start decorating a plastic table because of its material. In fact, a plastic surface is a more rewarding material for restoration. It does not require preliminary and lengthy processing.

The maximum is getting rid of scratches and chips. Well, if the surface is even, then it is enough to only sand it a little to roughen it, paint or soil could adhere better, or degrease it for further work - gluing film, wallpaper, tiles, mosaics, eggshells or decoupage.

To decoupage a plastic table, you will first need to process the table top. Sand it, put acrylic primer. Then think about how you will arrange the pictures. Make small sketches of their future location. Usually napkins or drawings on rice paper are used for decoupage, but for these purposes you can use any clippings and even pictures printed on a printer.

At the end of the work, the tabletop is varnished.

For a spectacular decoupage, you can use fabric. For decoration purposes, cotton material with a bright pattern is suitable. The decoupage procedure is the same, only PVC glue is applied immediately to the entire fabric.
