Self-made door hinges. Master class materials and tools modeling design mk on a loop for a casket metal fabric

In the process of making an aircraft model, you need to buy or make yourself the loops for hanging the rudders. The easiest way is to buy from a store if the store is around the corner. But what if there is nowhere to buy? Here is a modeler who is not a modeler if he cannot make simple and reliable loops for his aircraft on his own! Here I will give a few examples of making hinges for handlebars.

1. Homemade, very durable hinges:

You will need 0.3mm thick tin from Beck ^ s cans and a paper clip d \u003d 1mm. All we need is to cut the blanks to the sizes we need.

and assemble the structure as in the photo. It is better to make several holes in the cheeks of the loops, so that the homemade loops for the aircraft model hold better.

But these were on my 1.5 meter pilotage:

2. Homemade dropper loops:

Newer drippers, with thin, clear tubes, are best. We just cut off the segment we need, halve it lengthwise and glue it in. Great for light foam and small balsa models.

Such loops have little backlash, but as practice has shown, this is not critical and does not at all affect the flight performance of the aircraft model. These hinges cannot be used for winter flights, they become tanned, increase the load on the servo and can simply break!

Who among us has not witnessed how an unlucky customer in a household goods store is painfully trying to figure out which hinges he needs - left or right?

So I, when I nevertheless decided to replace the old and not very nice hinges at the doors to the bathroom and toilet, did not immediately remember how to distinguish them. But the matter is, in general, simple. Detachable half-hinged hinges (which are exactly what I needed) have a fixed rod in the bottom card (this part of the hinge is installed on the door frame), and the top of the hinge, which is attached to the door leaf (top card), has a cap-shaped hinge that is put on the rod.

It is the half-hinge hinges that are left and right. The left ones are for doors that open to the left, the right ones are for doors that open to the right. Determining which loops are required is not at all difficult. To do this, you need to stand in front of the door so that you have to open it towards yourself. If the loops are on the right, they are called right loops. And if on the left, then, respectively, on the left.

However, I needed both, as the bathroom and toilet doors opened in different directions.

There was, however, a doubt: shouldn't the loops be changed to one-piece ones? Now on sale there are mainly such. But they have a number of disadvantages compared to semi-hinged ones. Firstly, it is more difficult to hang the door alone on one-piece hinges, since you have to keep it suspended and at the same time screw in the fastening screws. Secondly, the height adjustment of the door leaf becomes much more complicated. So I settled on the new split hinges.

Operating procedure

First you need to remove the door from its hinges. You can do this without outside help if you use a bar with a cross section of 40 * 40 mm and trim a not very thick board. The block is placed in front of the open door as a support, and the board is slipped under the door leaf, placed on the block and used as a lever.

This allows you to easily remove the door without overloading your back. Then unscrew the old hinges. It is good if the splines of the screws are not damaged and not too smeared with paint, as is often the case. Otherwise, you must first clear them. In addition, the tip of the screwdriver must match exactly the slot of the screw.

If you cannot unscrew the screws "at a jump", you can try to wet them with kerosene (so that it seeps onto the thread) or attach a heated soldering iron to the screw head. Sometimes it is possible to move the screw from its place by turning it slightly clockwise first (in the direction of twisting). Motorists can use a so-called impact screwdriver. If all of the above methods did not help, then the old screws will have to be drilled out.

If the old hinge was too recessed into the door frame, you can use an insert cut from hardboard in the shape of a socket. Having previously aligned the old socket in the door frame with a chisel, install an insert in it and screw the hinge card to the door frame with long self-tapping screws.

To facilitate the installation of the door leaf, the rod at the lower hinge can be shortened slightly. To do this, saw off some part of it with a regular hacksaw for metal and with a file, chamfer at the end of the rod after sawing off.

The next operation is to install the upper parts of the hinges (upper cards) on the door leaf. Perhaps, in this case, you will first have to slightly correct the nests on the edge of the door leaf and only then fasten the hinges. After the cards are screwed on, it remains to hang the door leaf in place. At the same time, it is raised above the floor and held using a lever that was used to remove the door.

The door is installed, but there is another aspect of the work being done - the lubrication of the hinges. There are different lubricants for this. For example, a proven old-fashioned lead from a soft pencil. It is necessary to slightly raise the door leaf and push the lead

into the gap between the rubbing surfaces of the hinge, and then lower the canvas and open and close the door several times. The graphite will crumble into powder and eliminate squeaking like any other lubricant.

But there are also modern materials borrowed from the arsenal of motorists. These are aerosol semi-synthetic lubricants with a high degree of adhesion, designed for processing parts in hard-to-reach places. For example, HHS 2000 grease. These compounds easily penetrate into the smallest gaps of the mechanism and form a sticky film that is resistant to high loads (pressure or vibration).

In addition, they provide the hinge pin with reliable corrosion protection. Of course, this is not very relevant for a city apartment, but for a country house it is very important. By the way, almost all modern hinges are sold treated with just such lubricants.

How to change door hinges - work progress

  1. The hinges have served for many years and are outdated.
  2. Contemporary left and right hinges.
  3. A simple lever made of scrap materials will help to remove the door.
  4. It is sometimes very difficult to unscrew old hinges.
  5. The old slot in the door frame must be adjusted to the dimensions of the new hinge.
  6. If the socket is chosen too deep, you can install a hardboard insert into it.
  7. The hinge card is screwed to the door frame with long self-tapping screws.
  8. To facilitate the installation of the door leaf, the rod at the lower hinge can be shortened slightly.
  9. After sawing off the rod with a file, the chamfer is removed.
  10. If necessary, the slots on the edge of the door leaf also need to be corrected.
  11. The upper hinge card is screwed to the door leaf.
  12. The door leaf has taken its place.

A question for erudites: what mechanism is designed for a house, a car, an airplane, and even a spaceship? No need to go into an encyclopedia or frantically enter a request into Google, you just need to go to any door and push it. The door did not fall - it swung open, revealing to an inquisitive mind this unpretentious engineering structure called a door hinge.

In fact, the door hinge is simply irreplaceable, and the person who gave the world such a necessary mechanism was just a genius. Now, many modifications of this device have been created, which are used in almost all areas of life. Even concealed loops have been invented.

What is a door hinge: purpose

The mechanism by which any door, hatch, window frame has the ability to open, turning relative to a fixed part, for example, a door frame, is called a door hinge. In addition to the opening function, the canopy holds the entire mass of the door leaf and attaches it to the opening. For the door to work effectively, the swing mechanism must provide:

  • Reliability of connection with the box. Doors can be quite heavy. Therefore, hinges, as a rule, are made of steel or metal alloys with high strength.
  • Ease of turning. High-quality canopies are fitted in such a way that there is minimal backlash between the moving parts of the mechanism. This eliminates wedging at the time of opening or closing.
  • Service availability. The hinges usually have technical holes for the possibility of processing them with lubricants.
  • Convenient mounting holes. In all sheds, mounting holes are made for countersunk screw heads. Thanks to this there is no load on the pulling out of the mechanism when the door is closed.
  • Aesthetic appeal. Modern products are coated with decorative alloys by electroplating and look like a filigree loop (bronze, copper, nickel is the material of its coating). It is beautiful and, most importantly, it protects against corrosion.

Types of loops and their features

There are several typical hinge designs used for domestic wooden doors:

  • A feature is their fastening not to the end, but to the main visible plane of the door leaf. They usually have one long and one short valve. Sometimes such awnings are made of fancy shapes with patterns or forging.
  • Cut-in design. For these hinges in the end of the door and the frame, a special selection is made for the thickness of the sash. They are most commonly used for their reliability, relative ease of installation, and simplicity of design. Basically, this type of mechanism is collapsible, providing the ability to remove the door leaf.
  • Hidden door hinges. If the canopy models described above are visible both when the door is open and when the door is closed, then this view is completely invisible to the eye in the position of the closed doors. The design is not easy to install, since it requires sampling for a complex pivot mechanism both at the end of the door and in the door frame. The price for such accessories is also more expensive.
  • type. The original type of awnings, which is attached to the frame in one part, and to the door end with the other. In this case, the door should not be flush with the frame. There are adjustable and non-adjustable mechanisms.
  • Design Interesting in that it allows you to open the doors in both directions. This is ensured by a double hinge mechanism. Additionally, they are equipped with special springs that return the open wings of the hardware to the closed position.

Basement hatch hinges

This option requires a not quite standard approach. To make the entrance to the basement invisible, what needs to be organized? The answer is simple. We need a secret hatch. This is possible if the hatch cover is finished with the same material that covers the rest of the floor. For better masking, it is necessary that the gap between the door and the floor is minimal. But the question arises: how to make the lid rise easily? The fact is that the thickness of the hatch with a floor covering can be several centimeters, and with ordinary awnings, the gap is simply not enough to open the hatch freely, it will catch on and jam.

There is a special type of mechanism that can solve this problem - pantograph hinges. They are arranged in such a way that first the lid is fed upwards, and then it is already taken to the side. The awnings are not visible when closed, so they can be considered as hidden hinges. You can additionally enhance the lifting of the hatch by equipping the structure with a pair of pneumatic lifts from the trunk door of the car.

How to install door hinges

Let's try to install mortise type hinges on the door. If the canopies are detachable, then first you need to decide on the side to which the doors will open (there are right and left). Then, taking loops of the appropriate assignment, it is executed:

  1. Installation site marking on the door leaf. To do this, the canopies are applied to the end and outline the loop wing with a simple pencil.
  2. Sampling the plane under the wing of the loop mechanism. Along the contour outlined with a pencil, they pierce with a chisel to the depth of the wing thickness. Further, the layer of wood is removed with the same chisel.
  3. Fastening fittings to the end of the door. The loop is opened and one half is applied to the place where the plane was previously removed. Then they take wood screws and screw the mechanism with them.
  4. Marking the location of the hinge on the box. The mechanism is opened at an angle of 90 degrees. A wooden shingle is selected with a thickness of the size of the gap between the door and the floor. The door is installed on the shingle at an angle to the opening of 90 degrees so that the hinge wing rests on the door frame. Outline the canopy with a pencil.
  5. Sampling a plane for a loop on a box - repeating point 2.
  6. Fastening the hinge to the box - repeat step 3.

It is more expedient to first fix the awnings with two screws, and add the rest after adjustment.

It is better to take the hinges for one-piece so that the lid in the open state does not move to the side.

How to adjust the hinges

After the door is planted, it is opened slightly and released. Suppose that it remains in place, then they transfer it to a position of 90 degrees to the opening and release it again. If the door is motionless at any opening point, it means that it hangs correctly and its vertical is not displaced anywhere.

Next, check the work of the loops. Slowly opening the door leaf, make sure that the awnings do not make any other movements, except for the rotary ones provided for by the design. In the event that the hinges begin to bend or the door moves arbitrarily in any direction when released, it is necessary to adjust the position of the hinges.

It is possible to adjust the awnings so that the door does not open arbitrarily by placing a backing under one part of the hinge. To do this, the lower hinge is released at the point of attachment to the box and pieces of cardboard are inserted into the slot, achieving a position where the door stops spontaneously moving. After that, the wooden substrate is cut out instead of the cardboard and firmly fixed under the canopy.

Align the hinges so they do not bend in the following way. At the top, release the uppermost screw slightly, unscrew the second completely. Then slowly open and close the door, observing how the canopy begins to move from the second landing hole. Mark the average position of the loop for the entire cycle of movements and fix it rigidly through new fastening holes.

Hinges for hidden hatches do not need adjustment. This is a plus of the product. This ease of use is due to the fact that the secret hatch does not carry a special load on the separation.

How to care for the mechanism

Any mechanism requires care. For the hinges, this is regular lubrication. If the canopies are collapsible, then it is better to process them with lithol or similar mastic. Non-dismountable or hidden door hinges are usually greased, but in the process of movement, material is produced. Therefore, it is advisable to regularly process such awnings with oil for lubricating sewing machines. Usually, technical holes are provided in the hinges for these purposes.

It is also important to periodically check that the screws are tight. A slight backlash can very quickly break the mounting holes or loosen the mechanism itself. Backlash can be felt when opening the door when it slides slightly.

Homemade loops

Door hinges are not in short supply and are affordable for anyone. But sometimes there is a need to make a temporary door for carrying out any work. For example, fence off a construction site with a board and make an entrance to this territory. It is not necessary to buy iron canopies for this. You can make them yourself from rubber.

An ordinary used car tire is suitable for. Two rectangular strips 100X300 mm are cut from it. Stripes one at the top, the second at the bottom are attached to a homemade door. The second parts of the strips are fixed on the fence in the place of the opening. The door is ready.

Automotive hinges

Vehicle door awnings require much more care than ordinary doorways in the house. Caring for mechanisms such as basement sunroof hinges also cannot be compared to carports. This is due to the fact that the load on them is much more intense. And also there is an effect of high positive and negative temperatures. Therefore, for the care of such mechanisms, special lubricants have been developed that provide:

  • low;
  • long term preservation of lubricating properties;
  • stable homogeneous structure;
  • high frost resistance;
  • corrosion protection.

Conclusion

It will not be difficult to answer the question of which loops are best used in this or that case. You need to know the purpose of the door, its weight, and how it should look aesthetically. All canopies have load limits and purpose. But if you want to experiment, please. For example, the entrance to the basement is a non-standard situation, therefore, different hinges for the hatch into the basement can be arranged. It all depends on the performer's engineering thought.

Another thing I love to do is door hinges, which can be used in many wood crafts. It's not so much a desire to create something new, but just a desire to make your own door hinges. Most likely, this is a disappointment with the appearance of those loops that are available in the store. The hinges are made from hardwoods, mostly maple and oak. An important tool in making hinges is a router and a curly cutter, which sets ornate shapes. Another important part is having a drill with a diameter slightly larger than the hole in the loop. In more detail, how to make door hinges for caskets, on the door to the closet - we will consider in this article.

DIY door hinges.

There are many different styles of wood hinges that can be made. All door hinges are made of hardwood, mostly the door hardware is made of maple and oak. An important component in my case to make door hinges is a router, which will give the hinge a rich shape,. Another important part is a drill with a slightly larger diameter than the pivot pin. A hole is drilled in the top of the hinge so that the hinge can rotate freely.

Using a router and a milling table, cut a thorn on both sides of the wood blank, then cut it in half to make two door hinges.

Let's talk about how to make do-it-yourself door hinges. Why are they good? Firstly, they can withstand huge loads, they can be installed both on the door and on the garage door. Secondly, they can be given any size, that is, made both small and large. And, thirdly, there is much more confidence in the reliability of self-made loops than in purchased ones.

What tool do we need?

  • tape measure or ruler;
  • marker (chalk);
  • hacksaw with a cloth for metal (grinder);
  • a hammer;
  • file;
  • welding machine.

From materials:

  • metal plate 2-3 mm thick;
  • pipe section;
  • steel rod (it must be selected based on the inner diameter of the pipe. It should not dangle. Ideally, a piece of the rod should go into the pipe with an interference fit).

The first step is to cut off a piece of pipe. In general, it is planned to make metal hinges for the door with a total length of 110 mm. Therefore, we outline 50 mm on the pipe and cut it off. The second segment should be 10 mm larger, i.e. 60 mm in size.

We grind pipe sections outside and inside with a file. This is done in order to remove burrs.

In the same way, mark the length of 110 mm on the rod, and then saw off.

We drive the rod into the pipe to get the picture as in the photo below. If you have a lathe, everything is much easier. You grind two parts of the sleeve from a single piece of the blank, it remains only to weld the plates.

Next, you need to cut off the plate. There is no point in showing the sawing process. Everything is clear here. As a result, you should get 2 plates, 2 pipe sections and a piece of rod.

Let's move on to the welding part. If you are new to working with a welding inverter, then this information can be found on this.

The end of the pipe from which the rod comes out should not be scalded, otherwise the second half of the canopy will cling to the welding seam.

We grab the plates to the pipe, level, scald.

We get ready-made door hinges. Ignore the hole, there was just a finished plate.

That's all. This is how you can make your own door hinges. If they are painted or galvanized, then they will look no worse than the purchased ones, and they will not be inferior in functionality.
