How to choose curtains according to the size of the window. What should be the length of the curtains in the kitchen, living room, bedroom? How long should the curtains in the bedroom be?

Have you made the decision to sew the curtains into the room yourself? Then you need their exact dimensions. And today we will talk about how to get them correctly. How to calculate the width of the curtains, their length, take into account additional nuances. This is not at all difficult, and novice designers have absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

How to measure the height?

The height of the product is determined by measuring the distance between the floor and the hooks of the cornice. Take at least three measurements in different places to eliminate the curvature of both the floor and ceiling. If the resulting numbers match, then your ceiling, like the floor, is fairly flat. If sizes vary, check each result. You will have to calculate separately for each of the measurements.

Subtract the distance between the bottom edge of the curtain and the floor surface from the fixed size. The remaining result will be the desired height of the curtain fabric.

Now about the width

Such a thing requires very accurate measurements. Allowing an error of a couple of centimeters, you can completely ruin everything. If you decide to sew curtains in a specialized salon, then you should know: you will have to vouch for the correctness of the dimensions provided with your own signature. And your task is to check that the employee placing the order correctly wrote down the measurements you specified in the form with data.

If the size of the finished product does not suit you, then you can change the "dimensions" only by placing a new order for a fee.

Non-standard options

To avoid such annoying misunderstandings, you should learn a couple of simple rules by which such measurements are taken. First of all, you need to start with. Without this, you will not get a single exact size. If the curtain model you have chosen has a variable height (such as the "arch" style), you should mark at least two heights - the upper rise and the lower edge. It is advisable to add several intermediate dimensions to them.

It happens that the cornices above the windows are installed obliquely. This option can be found in country houses, or when curtains are sewn into an attic-type room, as well as when decorating stairs. In this case, you will need the heights for the upper and lower levels of each of the cornices, as well as their lengths in a straight line and in a horizontal projection. In the case when the cornice is bent in the form of an arch, you will need to make a separate piece for it.

We go for fabric

The next step when sewing curtains yourself is to calculate the required amount of fabric. First of all, decide on the choice of material and specify its specific width. Arriving at the store, you will find that tulle for curtains, as they exist, in widths from 1.4 to 1.6 meters (an average of one and a half meters). Another option is a height of 2.7 to 3.2 m (2.8 m on average).

When cutting, the second format is more economical, so most designers choose it. In addition, most of the lush and voluminous elements cannot be cut out of fabric if its width is insufficient. Therefore, in our calculations, we will focus on a height of about 2.8 m.

We focus on the cornice

The main measure that we need when determining the amount of fabric is the width of our cornice. If the chosen material has a large pattern and high density, the width is quite enough, one and a half times the size of the cornice. That is, we multiply its length by 1.5.

So, with a three-meter cornice, we need four and a half meters of fabric. This option is the most economical, but, unfortunately, not the most beautiful and aesthetic one. Curtains decorated with pleats in the form of a bow or beautifully assembled look much more elegant, while a special curtain tape is used.

If you want voluminous curtains

The minimum fabric at which a bow fold is possible is two widths of the cornice. But the view will be most effective if its width is exceeded 2.5-2.7 times. Accordingly, in the above example (cornice width - 3 meters) we need about 8 meters of fabric.

If your plans are to assemble fabric, for which you need a curtain tape, check the amount of material for it with a consultant in the store. But in all cases, remember that it will take about another 20 centimeters to bend the side seams, which should be added to the calculated footage.

Other curtain options

According to the above diagram, we calculate the size of the fabric for sewing a regular shade curtain and an inner tulle curtain. If our project provides for lambrequins, then each of its elements will require additional material consumption, which should be calculated separately and then folded up.

This task in this case is quite difficult - how to sew curtains. Patterns of finished products with all the calculations provided for the selected model, perhaps, will be its optimal solution. Another option is to contact a professional designer.

Those options for curtains where such difficulties are not provided for are much simpler. For example, when the selected model refers to Roman shades or Japanese panel shades. If we do not plan to assemble our product in folds, then we take one width (or height when it comes to fabric with a width of one and a half meters) and increase it by the allowance for the side seams.

What else not to forget

Only one important nuance will need to be taken into account here. In the case when the selected fabric is distinguished by a bright large print, with a one and a half meter width, you will need to adjust the pattern in the same way as a wallpaper sticker. In this case, additional amount of fabric will have to be purchased.

If our model is provided with a base of adhesive fabric, then its finished size with added allowances for seams increases by 20 or 30 cm to fit the curtain fabric onto the adhesive.

How to calculate the width of the curtains and their length for the chosen style

Of course, before measuring the fabric, you should decide on the size of the product itself. The curtain can be either up to the floor itself (not reaching its surface by about 13 mm) or flush with the window sill, as well as 8 centimeters below its level. So far, in our measurements we do not include allowances for the hem at the bottom and a drawstring along the upper edge.

How to calculate the width of the curtains? We determine it, as already mentioned, focusing on the extreme lateral points of the cornice. A small allowance should be provided for the entry of one blade onto another in the center. When the window is located in the corner of the room, when measuring the width, you will have to take into account the value from the corner to its edge. If this distance is very small (no more than 20 cm), then there is clearly not enough space to open the curtains normally. Consideration should be given to transferring both canvases to the other side.

Splendor ratio concept

The size of the curtains in the expanded form is not everything. Think about the splendor of your future product. It depends on the density of the selected fabric and the style of the drawstring at the top. If narrow deep folds are assumed, they will take from 3 to 3.5 times the width of the window.

In general, be guided by the following figures: the fluff ratio for fabrics of a dense type is 2: 1, in fabrics with an average density it is slightly higher - 2.5: 1. Well, the lightest fabrics should be chosen with a ratio of 3: 1, that is, take the width of the curtain three times larger than the size of the cornice.

Pattern on fabric and drawstring

When determining the required amount of fabric, it is imperative to take into account the repetitions of the pattern on it, the style of the upper drawstring and all the necessary allowances for the folds. The size of the pattern depends on its repeatability and lies within the boundaries between adjacent identical elements. It can be indicated on a coupon containing a description of the fabric. If there is no such information, you can calculate the size of the pattern yourself.

To obtain the size of each of the panels, one size of the pattern should be added to its required length. Do not forget about the drawstring provided on the upper edge of the product. Its width can vary from 2.5 to 20 cm. This value must be doubled and added to the calculated length of our canvas.

For example, with a ten-centimeter wide drawstring, the total should be increased by 20 cm.For a drawstring cut out separately, its length should be taken equal to the total width of the entire product, adding at least 15 centimeters to the hem.

As you can see, independent sewing of curtains of a simple style, including all the necessary measurements, the selection of fabric with the calculation of its required amount and taking into account some of the necessary nuances, is not at all difficult, and affordable for a novice dressmaker. We hope our article has helped the reader to navigate a little in this matter. We wish you all success in mastering this interesting and useful lesson!

The traditional way of decorating a window opening, hanging with tulle, has not lost its relevance - this is a win-win way to decorate a room and create coziness in it. Draped white linen can give a room a luxurious or solemn look even without using other techniques.

Tulle - a thin mesh fabric - is used in combination with curtains and separately, as a transparent cloth or as an independent curtain. It happens:

  • transparent;
  • colored translucent;
  • dense;
  • with a pattern, embroidery or without them.

This material has many other advantages:

  • it is inexpensive;
  • easy to process;
  • produced in a wide variety of types, colors and roll widths - to the satisfaction of the most demanding taste;
  • it is appropriate to use it both in the living room of a rich house and in a small attic window;
  • it looks equally good on a plastic window or arched doorway;
  • it is a great addition to any other type of curtain, including blinds.

Tulle can be made from synthetic fibers, natural fibers, or a combination of both. There are several varieties of it:

  1. veil;
  2. net;
  3. organza;
  4. cotton;
  5. silk.

Sewing curtains - how to calculate the footage?

You can determine the size of curtains and tulles by following a certain sequence:

  • measure the height of the eaves and take this indicator as a basis for calculating the length;
  • determine the length of the cornice - this is the base value for calculating the width of curtains and tulle fabric.
  1. Measure the height with a tape measure from the lower rod of the cornice to the floor at three points - from the right edge, in the middle and to the left. This is necessary to eliminate errors due to unevenness of the floor and ceiling. The smallest parameter of the three is selected.
  2. Determined with the desired length of the curtain: to the floor, above its surface by 2 - 3 cm or lower (so that they lie on the floor) by 10-15 cm.
  3. If it will be sewn to the fabric with loops, then add its width (the fabric is bent so much) and add 2.5 cm (distance from the top of the ribbon to the loop).
  4. If the bottom does not have an edge, then add allowances for the hem of the bottom of 5-10 cm.

The number of gathers depends on the presence of a pattern on the fabric and its density - the larger the pattern and the denser the fabric, the less gathering is required. window, if it is without a pattern, you can multiply the length of the cornice by 4: a well-draped fabric will look luxurious. If there is a drawing or pattern on it, which are decorations in themselves, the number of assemblies is reduced, respectively, the width of the curtains is smaller. A very large print or decorative embroidery requires a minimum of folds on the surface of the fabric.

The third parameter required for the calculation is technological allowances. They are added last when the length and width of the product are determined. To process the seams, leave 5 cm, 2.5 on each side (if such processing is required). The hem can be trimmed with a hem seam or bias tape. The texture of the tulle can be such that the fibers do not crumble, sometimes the edges can be simply melted. It is important not to forget to increase the width of the curtain by the amount of allowance for processing seams and edges when purchasing a large piece of fabric, although in some cases this indicator can be neglected.

You can calculate the width of the curtains by dividing the length of the cornice in half - since there are two canvases. The fold factor of dense fabric rarely exceeds 1.8. A beautiful expensive fabric - velvet, brocade does not need additional decorations, therefore drapes less. The simpler the curtain fabric, the more assemblies it requires.

  1. the distance from the eaves to the floor and the length of the bearing bar;
  2. the composition of the fabric - whether it will shrink or not after washing;
  3. assembly factor;
  4. the number of parts in the curtain - for each element, the footage of the fabric is calculated separately, and then the indicators are summed up;
  5. whether there is an edge and the need for processing edges and seams;
  6. the presence of a pattern, its size - the amount of fabric purchased is increased by the length of the pattern motif, to combine the pattern on two canvases of curtains;
  7. the width of the fabric in the roll - can it be positioned along the length of the window or will it have to be combined by sewing the canvases (it is undesirable to do this in curtains).

Manufacturers use several methods for decorating tulle:

  • embroidery;
  • printed drawing;
  • one-colored canvas.

Competently calculating the footage will help changing the assembly factor depending on the type of tulle fabric: with a small pattern or its absence - 2-3, with a large one - 1.5-2. Tulle curtain with large prints, abundantly gathered in folds, has no appearance. A minimum of folds helps to better see the decorative pattern on the canvas or the original embroidery.

To reduce costs, thrifty housewives use additional techniques. For example, a three-meter cornice requires 6 meters of tulle (coefficient 2). But taking into account the fact that the width of the curtain fabric occupies the side parts of the cornice, and the tulle curtain will be distributed in the center, they buy 5 meters of fabric: the appearance of the product does not suffer, plus significant savings in material and money. Knowledge of the fastness of the dyes used in the production of tulle will help to save money. Orange and red tulle fade faster, while yellow and green canvases will last more than 6 years.

It is very important to correctly calculate the curtains for the window: mistakes can spoil the appearance of the interior and entail additional costs for a complete or partial alteration of the product. The good news is that this is not difficult to do - you just need to take into account a few components and accurately measure.

In order to choose the right new curtains, in addition to the model, type and color of the fabric, it is necessary to determine the size of the required fabric.

If the calculations are done correctly, then the curtains are able to emphasize all the advantages of the room, but if mistakes are made, this can ruin any, even the most original stylistic decision.

That is why, before purchasing fabric or ready-made curtains, you need to carry out all the measuring work.

The place of fixation to the ceiling cornice is the point from which the calculations will be carried out. The distance is measured from this point to the point where the curtain will end. There may be several options for execution:

  • to the windowsill;
  • below the windowsill;
  • to the floor;
  • creeping across the floor.

If the first option is used, then the distance from the ceiling cornice to the point that is 1 cm higher than the sill is measured. This allows the product to move without touching.

The second option, as the end of the curtain, takes a point 10-15 cm below the window sill. When the length of the product is up to the floor, its edge should rise 5–6 cm above it, so as not to deteriorate with constant movement along the cornice.

Finally, for the version of curtains spreading along the floor, the size is measured from the eaves to the floor and another 10–30 cm is added to the result.

How to calculate the length from a window opening

If the curtains hang on a cornice located just above the window opening, then all measurements should take into account the fastening system - these can be rings with clips, eyelets, drawstring, hinges, etc.

The height of the product should be calculated no longer from the eaves, but from the place of its attachment. Therefore, the size of the fasteners should not be included in the length of the web itself. Except when a drawstring or grommet is used. Kuliska is a sewn pocket made of curtain fabric, through which the cornice passes, as a rule, tubular (at the cut it is a circle).

The length is measured from the eaves to the desired point, as discussed above. To the result is added the height of the eaves circumference and a couple of centimeters margin for stitching the pocket.

Eyelets- elements that reinforce the edges of the holes in the curtain through which the cornice is threaded. When measuring the length of the fabric, it must be borne in mind that the eyelet should be located at a distance of 2 cm from the edge of the fabric and a hem must be made on the wrong side (the length of the hem is equal to the diameter of the eyelet plus 4 cm).

Important! Artificial fabrics common today allow you to reduce shrinkage during washing to a minimum. If a fabric is used that consists of 60% natural fibers, then a 10% margin is taken for its shrinkage during washing.

What is needed for the calculation

All you need is sheets of paper, a pencil, and a measuring tape (if you don't have one, you can use a measuring tape).

The calculation of the size is carried out in two stages: first, the height of the curtain is determined, then the amount of fabric is calculated. The same procedure is repeated to calculate the width.

Calculation stages

Stage 1: the height of the curtain is determined. Taking into account where the bottom of the curtain will be located, its length is determined by measuring the distance from the ceiling cornice (with its fastening elements) or from the base of the wall cornice fasteners to this bottom.

Stage 2: the amount of fabric is calculated. The length of the bottom and top hem is added to the curtain's height.

Why do you need to make calculations

The length should correspond to the type of room in which they will be hung. And the kitchen, living room, bedroom and children's room are completely different in their design and functionality of the premises.

And a lot will depend on the correct calculation: how the natural light source will affect, how possible defects in the slopes and window sill will be hidden, how the interior of the room will be originally complemented, etc.

Council number 1. If possible, it is better to take all measurements with a tape measure, since it is longer than a centimeter tape. You can win exactly that way.

Council number 2. Since all measurements are tied to the cornice, it must be hung in advance.

Council number 3. The remnants of fabric after cutting can be useful for creating curtain loops and ties, as well as grabs.

Council number 4. In the case of curvature of the floor, the height should be measured in several places, for example at the edges and in the middle. As a result, take the average value.

Attention! There are a huge variety of fabrics that have a repetition of the pattern along the length. In order for the drawing to continue as a single canvas with the curtains moved, a supply of material is required. In this case, the height of the repeating piece is measured and the result is added as a margin to the total length of the fabric purchased.

The length of the curtains is an extremely important parameter in the decorative design of the window opening. Of course, the question of choosing a product can cause confusion for someone. However, knowing the simple rules of preparatory measuring work, you can safely expect that it is the curtains that will become one of the decorations and a symbol of comfort in your home.

Curtains, curtains or curtains are interior items that perform several functions in a room, but their length, width (and even thickness) depends not only on the purpose. And in order to determine the size of the curtains correctly, an individual approach is required, even in standard solutions.

Window curtains

Before tackling meters and centimeters, we must first determine for which room we are choosing a curtain. Of course, in any of them (be it a bedroom, children's room, kitchen or living room), window curtains perform the same functions:

  • protect from outside light;
  • close from the street;
  • decorate or complement the interior and exterior of the house.

However, the destination must be taken into account in order to choose the right material for the curtains. For example, for a children's room and kitchen, it is better to use smooth-textured synthetic fabrics - the material is not easily soiled and easily washable.

When choosing textures and colors, a decorator, artist or interior designer may not be needed. Especially when the room has been furnished for a long time, and curtains are purchased to update its interior decoration.

The basic rules for the selection of interior elements are easy to learn on your own. For example, the basic color principle says: warm fabrics are selected to warm tones of wallpaper, artistically plastered or painted walls, and cold tones to cold tones. In particular, if the curtains are matched in color, but 1 - 2 tones (according to the color scale) darker than the wallpaper, they will bring a little more home warmth and comfort to the room. It is even better if the width of the curtains allows you to leave soft folds on their surface, even when the windows are completely closed.

Curtains in a color contrasting with the wallpaper visually reduce the space of the room. The color of the window textiles, which is the same as the wallpaper, does not affect the visual perception of the cubic capacity and is suitable for small rooms. If the wall with a window needs to be brought closer, then bright curtains of saturated color (better than warm colors) will be successful. If it needs to be removed, then you should select:

  • lighter colors;
  • cold tones.

When wallpaper or wall painting is used indoors, or the walls are decorated in different colors, the curtains should be matched to the main background of the interior.

Technical nuance: Before calculating the length of the curtains, reinforce the cornice above the window. The optimal distance from the top edge of the window opening to the eaves is 7.5 - 12.5 cm. To effectively push the curtains apart and allow in or block out external light, the eaves strip should protrude 15 - 20 cm along the side edges of the window.

Room

A room can be designed for receiving guests, for relaxation (bedroom), for work (study / office), or be universal - study-bedroom; studio-living room; kitchen-dining room. In any case, the considerations will be the same for all the spaces listed when choosing fabric and calculating the size of the curtains.

Meters

How long the curtains should be in the room, we determine based on the size of the windows; the height of the ceiling or the distance from the floor to the rail (curtain rod) plus or minus the size of the fabric clips. To ensure the accuracy in cm, it is better to use a tape measure with a rigid measuring tape or a meter ruler.

For window decoration, there are several standard design solutions in length:

  • to the windowsill;
  • below the windowsill;
  • to the floor;
  • to the floor with a margin.

In the latter case, a stock of 5 - 25 cm is usually recommended for a large tulle curtain (such as a fishing net). Sill length is good for simple chintz curtains, no pattern. At the same time, the openwork trim around the edges or the openwork structure of the entire mini-curtain will look good. Such solutions are appropriate in a studio or living room, decorated in the original Art Deco, or in the Country style (Rustic).

In general, the most universal size for a typical apartment with standard windows is 200x260 cm. This "standard" applies equally to transparent and dense curtains. The width of 260 cm can be divided if two curtains of 130 are used or a combination of three, for example 100 + 80 + 80 cm.

If the width of the windows is about 3 meters or more, then it is very often recommended to use two thick curtains of a standard width of 200 cm. As a rule, it is recommended to use one tulle curtain for a room window. In this case, the width with a margin is recommended, in particular, for a 3-meter window, the width can be 3.3 - 3.6 m. The second option: two tulle curtains with a width of 180 - 200 cm.

Styles

For rooms in the style of minimalism (plain wallpaper, a little laconic furniture, a floor with a simple covering), blinds or roller blinds are more suitable than soft fabrics. At the same time, fabric curtains (including classic ones) are not excluded, and a soft medium- or large-mesh tulle curtain of a warm shade, matched by color, gives special comfort to minimalist interiors. Photo 1 shows the interior in a minimalist style, but with a fabric solution for the windows. Such solutions (rather laconicism than minimalism) are typical for Scandinavian-style rooms.

Curtains in a minimalist interior

Baroque, rococo, Victorian abundance and respectability of the interior will successfully complement the heavy curtains with fringe and flounces - both themselves and in combination with openwork tulle (see photo 2). Sizes usually do not go beyond the original standards: 200x260 cm; 220x200 and 260x180 (for rooms with high ceilings). With a double combination, tulle and curtains are matched to the shades prevailing in the interior, in particular, under the white ceiling - white tulle, under the pink walls - wine-red curtains.

Baroque curtains in the fireplace room

Country style Country (Provence) with large windows welcomes solutions of intricate cut with drapery, tassels and floor length (see photo).

Curtains in the Provence style living room

For small-format windows, white curtains with a simple embossed (white or light embroidery) or perforated pattern are suitable. The size of the curtain is selected according to the width of the window opening with a minimum margin (5 - 7 cm), and the length can be either in the floor of the window or over the entire height of the window opening.

The curtains of the same color will harmoniously fit into the interior decorated in smooth lines, but several tones lighter or darker, for example, light pink and fuchsia; azure and sky blue, green and aquamarine, gray and silver. The wood-trimmed walls will complement the cognac color.

The pattern applied to the curtains can match the wallpaper pattern (like a tie matches a shirt), or it can create contrast. Both are accepted, depending on the general interior style. Tan with sparkles and mother-of-pearl will fit well into the Baroque interior with its bronze and golden stucco moldings. Geometric patterns on the curtains will successfully complement the same figures on the walls, while one should not chase after commensurability. Large (10x10 and even 15x15 cm) figures on the fabric will successfully complement the small centimeter squares-triangles-circles in the wallpaper pattern. There are several options for such a contrast:

  • large figures on the fabric and medium or large ones on the wall;
  • small or medium - large or medium;
  • small - medium or small.

All of them will create their own mood, and you need to choose either according to taste or on the recommendation of a design specialist.

Kitchen, nursery, bathroom

It is known that the size of the curtains is influenced by the habits of the users of the room and (or) the purpose of the room itself, that is, the microclimate. A special microclimate and additional requirements for all interior materials in any apartment, any house are distinguished by a kitchen, a nursery and a bathroom or an adjacent bathroom.

Kitchen space

As you know, a kitchen is a room in which we move more actively than in a bedroom or, for example, in a living room. The second nuance is the purity of the air - even with an effective exhaust hood, kitchen fumes take place. The third circumstance affecting the size of the curtains is the presence of an open fire (though only when the stove is in the immediate vicinity of the windows). According to the conditions, the kitchen curtains should be:

  • easy to clean;
  • shorter than in the room;
  • made of difficult-to-combustible or non-combustible material (desirable).

The length of the kitchen curtains should not be lower than the window sill, or even only half the window. The width of the transparent tulle must be matched to the width of the window. The width of the dense, light-shielding fabric is selected individually (as well as its color). As a rule, 200 cm is enough, but options are possible, for example, "100 + 100 cm"; "120 + 120"; "70 + 70", etc.

Children

Children, as you know, move more actively than adults, and are more careless in using curtains than their parents and grandparents. Therefore, in the children's room, easier-to-use short formats are welcomed:

  • to the windowsill;
  • 3 - 10 cm below the windowsill;
  • 2 - 5 cm above the floor.

Children happen to use window curtains as a sanitary napkin or towel. Accordingly, you should choose a colored material (even better - with a pattern that masks possible stains), of course, it must meet the hygiene requirements for children's rooms.

When the width of the window is a meter with a small, the width of the tulle curtain can be strictly according to the size of the window or 10 - 30 cm larger. For a light protection curtain, the dimensions are selected with a sufficient margin. Practice shows that the "adult" standard of 200x260 cm is very often suitable for a children's room.

Bathroom / WC

Windows in the bathroom are quite rare, but if they are, then curtains are usually needed in the same way as in other rooms. The air in the bathroom is characterized by high humidity, which is why the curtain material should be non-hygroscopic (preferably) and resistant to decay. Synthetic fabrics of light colors are welcome, preferably warm if the bathroom is cool and bright cold colors when cool is necessary.

The height and width of the window in the bathroom rarely exceeds 1 meter, so you can't really walk around with the size of the curtains. Of course, larger windows also occur in the bathroom, but for any format, the width should completely cover the window opening, and the length of the curtains can be any - from "To the floor" to "To the floor of the window".

The rules for selecting curtains by color and pattern are the same as for ordinary rooms (see above). It is also appropriate to use such a thing as a roller blind, which usually goes very well with tiled walls.

In conclusion, it should probably be recalled that long curtains decorate the interior and effectively hide the flaws of the window opening.

Please note: very often the curtains are quite large, therefore they bring a very tangible accent to the interior. In other words, they can both enrich and minimize the style of the entire room.

Choosing a curtain fabric is not easy, but it is equally difficult to determine the appropriate length and width of your future curtains.

Very often, when choosing new curtains, we focus on the size of their predecessors, but this is not entirely true.

The fact is that when choosing the width and length of the curtains, you need to take into account not only the size of the window, the height of the attachment and your own feelings, but also the features of the fabric you choose: the pattern, the density of the material and much more. You have to do hard calculations.

It is in order to simplify the process of measuring curtains that Textile Service specialists reveal in this article all their tricks.

"Textile Service" has been on the market for over 10 years, we know absolutely everything about curtains and will help you make the right choice, select the best option for you, or sew for you unique, only yours, curtains.

Let's start with CURTAIN HEIGHT- this is the distance from the fastening (cornice on which the curtain is hung) to the bottom edge, that is, to the floor (or slightly higher - depending on the client's wishes).

CURTAIN WIDTH Is the distance from the left to the right edge of the finished shade.

The width of the curtain is always greater than the width of the window, therefore, first of all, we measure the length of the cornice, and then multiply the resulting value by the coefficient calculated for the curtain folds. Moreover, for different fabrics this coefficient your own: for light, tulle fabrics, it is 2 - 3, for heavy, curtain fabrics - 1.5 - 3. For example, for a cornice with a length of 1.5 meters, the width of the tulle curtain should be from 3 to 4.5 meters, the width of the curtain is made of dense fabric - from 2.25 to 4.5 meters.

In stores, the fabric is sold in rolls, respectively, the width of the fabric is the width of the roll. Next, you should pay attention to the pattern of the fabric (if any):

  1. Pattern perpendicular to the width: the specified width of the fabric (the standard is 280 centimeters, there are other options) - this is the maximum height of the finished curtain.
  2. Pattern parallel to width: The width of the fabric is the maximum width of the finished curtain.

NOTE!

  • When choosing tulle it must be remembered that its height is limited by the width of the roll due to the location of the pattern on the fabric - pattern across the roll ( 1 )
  • Reverse situation with curtains: In curtain fabrics, the pattern usually runs along the roll of fabric. Therefore, the width of the curtain is the width of the roll of fabric ( 2 )

When buying material in rolls, you pay for running meter of fabric... In the first case, you "gain width", in the second - "gain height".

For example, you need a curtain 270 centimeters wide, but its height should be only 150 centimeters - in this case, of course, it is more convenient and profitable for you to buy a cut, "gaining height", that is, only 150 centimeters of fabric. The only thing is that "longitudinal fabrics" always have a regular, repeating pattern, so when sewing, for example, two identical curtains, you will need to align the pattern on two halves, that is, you will have to take into account the rapport - the step of repeating the pattern and lay a margin for this fabrics.

How to calculate fabric consumption for window shades

You need to decorate the window. To do this, you will have to calculate the consumption of fabric, do not miss the hem allowances, pay attention to the ways of attaching the curtains and determine the length as accurately as possible.
Chances are, you've already finished your renovation and it's time to get started on the windows. Or just want to update the tulle and curtains. How much fabric should you buy? No, no, do not rush to call a specialist if you have time and there are not so many windows in your room. Take a measuring tape and take a few minutes.

So, you need a tape measure, a pencil and a piece of paper.

It is a steel tape measure, not a centimeter. It is longer and more accurate.
First, let's determine the length of the curtains. Traditionally, there are three types of lengths: floor-length curtains, up to the windowsill and just below the windowsill.
If the curtains are to the floor, then they should end one centimeter from the floor level in order to wear less. Of course, if you want the fabric to fall to the floor, choose a longer length. Do not take into account the hem allowances for now, you will add them later. Until then, measure the distance from the intended position at the bottom to the base of the rings or to the top of the fixed rail.
Count the curtains to the windowsill one centimeter higher than the given windowsill so that the fabric can move freely. In the variant when they are below the windowsill, they look neat if the curtains are 10-15 cm lower.
To determine the width, you need to fix the cornice in the right place. As a rule, the cornice protrudes fifteen centimeters from the window. This will allow, by opening the curtains, to illuminate the room during the day. Determine the width along the length of the cornice and the type of curtain fastening. Find out your build factor to calculate how much fabric you need. When calculating the width, add ten centimeters to the hem at the sides.
When the necessary measurements are taken, count the amount of fabric.
Height consumption = height + bottom hem + top hem. Note that if the fabric is with a repeating pattern, then the height should be increased by the length of the repeating piece.
Fabric consumption in width = eaves length multiplied by the gathering factor.

Let's say you have a standard window. The length of the cornice is two meters. The curtains are two point six meters high. Non-patterned fabric. Will be attached to the curtain tape. It turns out the flow rate in height is 2.6 + 0.15 + 0.1m. It is 2.85m.

How much tulle is needed for the window, how to calculate?

In width 2x2 + 0.2m. It is 4.2m. As a result, 11.97 m2 of fabric.

How much fabric do you need to sew curtains?

Tulle fabrics

To determine the amount of fabric required for sewing curtains, first of all, you need to measure the width of the curtain rod.
A good usable pleat factor for tulle fabrics is 3.
For example, for a cornice of 1.5 meters, 4.5 meters of tulle will be required.
The minimum decent odds are 2.

Curtain fabrics

For dense curtain fabrics, the coefficient may be less - 2.5, minimum 1.5.
Do not forget that the beauty of a fabric is not only and not so much of its pattern. The texture of the fabric, its plasticity, play on the folds are no less important detail. Therefore, you should save on the width of the canvas with a sense of proportion. In addition, the more curtain fabric, the better the protection from light.

Processing allowances

Side edges

For processing the edges of the fabric on the right and left, an additional 1-5 centimeters should be laid on each side, depending on the width of the intended seam. Those. from a meter cut of fabric you get a curtain 90-98 cm wide. When ordering ready-made curtains from us, keep in mind that by placing an order, for example, for a curtain of 3 meters of fabric, in fact you will receive a finished product with a width of about 2.95.

Bottom edge

For processing the lower edge of curtain fabrics, lay at least 5 centimeters. Tulle fabrics, as a rule, come with a factory weighting agent, so you don't need to lay anything on the bottom processing.
If you buy a set of tulle and curtains with the same pattern, keep in mind that, to adjust the pattern in height, manufacturers often leave the curtains below about 10 cm of fabric. That is, if you put tulle and curtain fabrics next to it, the lower edge of the curtain will be 10 cm lower than the tulle weighting agent. Accordingly, the upper edge of the curtain will also be lower. This point must be taken into account if the height of the finished curtain is critically close to the width of the fabric. For example, if you need a finished curtain 2.90 m in height, and the width of the fabric is 3 m, then the curtain can be sewn (for example, using a narrow curtain tape), but there is nowhere to take a 10 cm pattern to fit.

Among other things, the lower hem has a safety function. For example, if, after an incorrectly selected washing mode, the curtain has noticeably sat down (shrinkage can reach 5-10% of the curtain's height), and you have an extra 15 centimeters in the bottom hem - the price of the question is to knock the seam, release the stock, hem again. The average price of a decent atelier for this service is 100 rubles / m line.
And for those who have not forgotten the labor lessons at school, the whole procedure, taking into account the unpacking of the sewing machine and packing it back, will take 30 minutes.

In extreme cases (for example, the curtain is hung on another window, with a higher cornice), the same operation can be done with the upper hem, although it is more difficult there, because there are already two lines, plus the curtain tape. Therefore, laying more fabric in the top and bottom hem will at least not hurt. And below this "extra" fabric will, moreover, play the role of an impromptu weighting agent.

Top edge

The margin for finishing the upper edge of the curtain depends on the type of fastening.

For curtain tape(it is also a mounting tape) - these are two widths of this tape. As a last resort, one width, plus a few millimeters. For example, for the production of curtains, by default, we use a tape 6 cm wide, and lay 12 cm of fabric on a double hem.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to leave a strip of fabric several centimeters wide above the curtain tape - the so-called "side", or "comb", for example, to close the cornice. Accordingly, when calculating, it is necessary to lay on it a double supply of fabric. By the way, the side, among other things, gives a nice fold.

For eyelets the situation is similar, except for an important point - a strip of dense self-adhesive fabric on which the eyelets (eyelet tape) are held - 10-20 cm. this number will not work with eyelets - whatever one may say, the maximum possible height is 266 cm

With material for hinges the situation is simple - if they do not have enough extra fabric cut off from above, you can additionally buy several tens of centimeters of fabric. which is enough not only for the hinges, but also for the hooks.

Width of fabric in a roll

The most common width of the fabric in a roll is 280 cm. Quite often there are fabrics with a width of 300 and even 320 cm. It is not uncommon for a width of 140 - 150 cm. As a rule, these are special fabrics, for example velveteen or blackout. This width is often used for upholstery fabrics.
If you do not have enough height, then the issue can be solved by sewing on the loops on the curtain, or by making a "overcut" - a solid piece of fabric on top, and not necessarily with the same pattern. When increasing the height, it should be borne in mind that it is undesirable to sew fabrics from different materials, due to the fact that after washing the parts may shrink unevenly, due to which the joint "wrinkles".

Direction of drawing

Quite often, the pattern runs along the direction of the fabric in the roll. This means that the maximum width of the finished curtain made of fabric is 280 (-10 for processing) = 270cm, but the height is not limited. In case you need a curtain of a small height, this can lead to a noticeable reduction in fabric costs. For example: if you need a curtain with a height of 1.5 m and a width of 2.70, then with a standard arrangement of the pattern, "gaining width", you would need 2.7 running meters of fabric (when sewing from above, a lot of excess fabric is cut off), and with a longitudinal arrangement, "gaining height" - 1.5 running meters.

How long should the tulle be

"Longitudinal" fabrics always have a regular pattern, and therefore it is necessary to take into account the rapport - the step of repetition of the pattern.

For example, when sewing two identical curtains, it is often necessary to align the pattern on the two halves. To do this, you should lay a stock of fabric equal to the rapport.

How to correctly calculate the width of the tulle yourself.

I want to buy a new tulle, but I don’t know how much more to take.

What should be the width of the tulle on the window: how to calculate?

2 Answers:

In order to correctly calculate the amount of tulle, it is necessary to know the width of the cornice, and not the width of the window, since the cornice is generally larger than the width of the window. It is enough to take tulle one and a half times the width of the cornice, i.e. the width of the cornice just needs to be multiplied by 1.5. Example: the width of the cornice = 2 meters, therefore, the tulle will need 2 meters * 1.5 = 3 meters. And I want to say right away that this calculation refers to the most economical calculations, but in my opinion not the most aesthetic one. I personally love it when the tulle is more magnificent. But this is all for an amateur. I also think that if tulle is needed in the kitchen, then its length can be made no longer than the windowsill, but if tulle is needed in other rooms, then it is best to buy tulle floor-length. From personal experience, I do not recommend buying their cotton tulle.

The fact is that there are many types of curtains and tulle, if you want a rich fold on a three-meter wall, you can multiply the required width by 3. For some types of Roman blinds, a fold is not necessary, in this case you distribute your assembly and the curtain does not horizontally and vertically.
Remember the formula 1: 3. Be alert to invisible and non-functional areas. Experimentation is an important process not only in your life, but also in great designers.
With roman shades, you have to be very precise in size, as these are horizontal shades. Then the curtain mechanism will be difficult to fix. If you follow the instructions, then I think success will be around the corner, and this is important. For curtains with a high density, double width will be enough, but still there is an amendment from the thickness of the curtains.

Recent questions

The importance of window curtains in the interior can hardly be overestimated. It is the curtains that form the final look of the room. You need to choose them based on the general style and color scheme. But you need not only to choose the right material, but also to calculate the required amount correctly, otherwise the discrepancy will ruin the most thoughtful design.

Curtains, curtains, drapes are types of window frames that can be lifted upward using a mechanism or be sliding.

So that you do not have any problems communicating with textile sellers or designers, call the window frame elements by their proper names.

Curtains - curtains of any type, can be sliding or raised using a mechanism.

Curtains - thin translucent curtains of any type. You can come across the names: tulle, mesh, organza, but these are just types of material for sewing curtains.

Curtains are heavy, usually opaque curtains. Previously, the term was used to refer to the fabric that decorates doorways, but today it unites all blackout curtains.

Correct measurements

An important step in calculating the material for curtains is the correct measurement of the window dimensions.

The length and width of the curtain depends both on the parameters of the window and on the height of the eaves in relation to the floor.

There is no general formula for calculating, and it will be individual for each type of fabric. For the most accurate calculation, you need to know the following parameters:

  • eaves length;
  • curtain width;
  • curtain length;
  • the necessary stock for sewing on the braid;
  • pattern repeat.

The rapport is the distance between the repeating elements of the drawing. You need to know it so that when cutting curtains, both canvases turn out to be identical.

It is better to take measurements with a metal tape measure. The tailor's cm is not too precise and comfortable.

So, everything is clear with the terms, you can proceed to measurements.

  1. Curtain rod length. It is important that by the time you calculate and purchase the fabric, you already know exactly which model will hold the new curtains. If the cornice is wall-mounted, its length is measured strictly from the tip to the tip, the height - from the upper border of the tube to the floor. If the cornice is ceiling-mounted, the length should be measured from edge to edge, and the height should be measured from the bottom edge to the floor. It is not necessary to make measurements "by eye", fix the cornice on the wall and only after that take a tape measure in your hands.
  2. Curtain width. The length of the curtain rod from the tip to the tip is taken as a basis. If there are two curtains, the value must be halved.

    How to correctly calculate the width of the curtains for the window

    The resulting figure is the smallest possible curtain width. In order for it to lay beautifully, the total must be multiplied by the “folds” coefficient. For curtains - 2-4, for curtains - 1.5-3.

  3. Curtain length. It is extremely important to make this measurement correctly. To determine the optimal length of the blade, measure the distance from the string of the cornice or the lower edge of the fixing rings to the desired level. The most common options: to the windowsill (1 cm above it), below the windowsill (10-15 cm below) and to the floor (1 cm above the floor). There is no need to lay stock for hemming yet.
  4. Stock for sewing on the tape. Decide in advance on the size of the braid and lay 2 widths on its sewing.
  5. Rapport of the picture. After you have the final dimensions of the curtain on your hands, measure the rapport and add it to the required length if the pattern is located along the length of the fabric.
