Abb series s201. The device of ABB modular circuit breakers of the S200, s201, s203, S280, S290 series

ABB S201 modular circuit breakers are used to organize safe wiring in residential and industrial buildings. Designed for rated current up to 63 amperes. The manufacturer is the Swiss company ABB, one of the world leaders in the market of electrical equipment.

Varieties of automatic machines ABB series S201

When choosing ABB S201 circuit breakers, pay attention to its polarity. To date, there are the following types of machines, differing in the number of NC contacts:

  • single-phase;
  • two-phase;
  • three-phase;
  • four-phase.

The presence of a four-phase circuit breaker allows switching the neutral wire. However, even if you are working with single-phase wiring, it is better to use an ABB S201 series two-phase circuit breaker, which will guarantee greater safety and clarity of operation than a single-phase one.

The choice of the machine must be made taking into account the maximum rated current. This indicator is rounded up and the appropriate device model with the closest values is selected. If frequent power surges are expected in a given electrical circuit, then it is better to pay attention to the machine with an electromagnetic tripping system. S201 circuit breakers open the circuit instantly, protecting the wiring from melting and fire.

Installation of a single-case unit is carried out on a standard Din-rail, in addition, the compact ABB S201 automatic machine allows you to significantly save the already cramped space of the switchboard.

ABB circuit breakers or ABB circuit breakers for short, we will talk about them in this article. ABB machines, which are used in electrical panels of apartments or private houses, are divided into two series. The first series is the “stripped down” budget SH 200 and the second, more sophisticated series of ABB S200 machines. In their electrical panels, I use ABB S200 vending machines, which have a number of advantages over budget ABB SH200 machines. After all, you must admit that in order to make a budget version of any product, you need to remove something, cut it down, save on something, and ABB SH200 machines.

When choosing a quality machine the main criterion is a well-known brand and purchase from official dealers. When assembling electrical panels, I buy components from ETM and AVS-Electro, which are the official representatives of ABB and Schneider Electric in Russia.

ABB circuit breakers are switching devices,which disconnect and switch off the power supply of cable lines, ABB breakers protect cables from short-circuit and overload currents (currents higher than the rated currents of ABB breakers). Or to put it briefly, ABB circuit breakers protect against overcurrents.

Automata ABB S200 break currents up to 6 kA, ABB SH200 circuit breakers up to 4.5 kA, i.e. these are the currents that ABB breakers cut without fire. Short-circuit currents are calculated based on the load, in everyday life they do not exceed 6 kA, and therefore, there is no need to install ABB circuit breakers with a higher value for maximum current in the switchboard of an apartment or a private house.

ABB machines. Device

ABB S200 series machines have been on sale not so long ago, since about 2012. Relative to the previous series, the body and mechanisms of ABB S200 machines have undergone changes. The case of ABB S200 machines is made of polyamide, the melting point of which is about 950 degrees. Added indication on the body of the machine "on" (red) and "off" (green). We increased the cross section of the terminals of the S200 machines to 35 mm 2.

For which I liked not only ABB machines, but also all modular products. This is the presence of double terminals, both above and below. This provides certain advantages for . Wires of different cross sections can be connected to the terminals of ABB circuit breakers.

ABB machines have a very wide operating temperature range from -50 to +70 degrees C. I am quoting an excerpt from an information letter from ABB confirming this information.

Automatic ABB is a complex mechanism with many parts. This is the high reliability and quality of ABB machines. After all, despite the large number of small parts of a single mechanism, ABB machines are a reliable design. I will not write about everyone, but will only indicate the main elements of ABB machines:

ABB machines. Operation principle

In normal operation, ABB circuit breakers pass through themselves a current not exceeding the rated current for an infinite time. But if an overload occurs in the lines on which ABB machines are installed (current - which does not significantly exceed the rated one), and in this case the ABB machines turn off thermal release. The bimetal plate (5) of the thermal release heats up (overload) and actuates the tripping mechanism of the ABB circuit breaker. Operation of the thermal release when I nom. from 1.13 to 1.45 will occur in more than 1 hour, more than 1.45 from I nom. in less than 1 hour. That is, the thermal release will turn off the ABB machine when you connect several heaters and electric kettles to this cable.

If a short circuit occurs on the line and devices connected to it, i.e. “appears” a current several times higher than the rated one, in this case, the ABB machines work electromagnetic release, which disables the ABB machines. A current several times higher than the nominal one flows through the solenoid winding (9), induces a magnetic flux that moves the coil core, opening the contacts at the ABB machine. Unlike the thermal release, the electromagnetic one works in a fraction of a second, almost instantly turning off the ABB circuit breakers.

Characteristics of the electromagnetic release

According to the operation characteristic of the electromagnetic release, ABB circuit breakers are divided into the following types (classes):

ABB type B (3-5)*I nom- for residential and commercial premises, are widely used in Europe. I recommend installing ABB circuit breakers with characteristic B on all cable lines in apartments and private houses, with the exception of those with large starting currents (pumps, motors, etc.).

Automatic machines ABB type C (5-10)*I nom- the most common type in Russia. In older networks, where the lines are in poor condition and the short circuit currents may be small, ABB type C circuit breakers may not work at all. In new shields, it is correct to set the “B” machines.

ABB type D from (10-20)*I nom- they are mainly used in industry, in control circuits of motors, machine tools, low-voltage transformers and other devices where there are large starting currents.

Automatic machines ABB type K from (10-14)*I nom- used to protect electric motors, transformers and control circuits.

Automatic machines ABB type Z (2-3)*I nom- protection of control circuits from short circuit and small continuous overloads.

The designation of the characteristic (type) of the electromagnetic release for ABB circuit breakers is applied to the case.

Depending on the sensitivity (type of electromagnetic release), ABB circuit breakers are produced with different rated currents. Because automata with characteristic B are more sensitive than C and D, then ABB does not make them less than 6 A:

ABB type B circuit breakers (rated currents from 6 to 63 A)

ABB type C and type D circuit breakers (rated currents from 0.5 to 63 A)

ABB machines by number of poles

ABB machines are produced with a number of poles from 1 to 4. Single-pole machines ABB 1P occupy 1 module in the shield and are designated S201, two-pole machines ABB 2P - 2 modules (S202), three-pole machines ABB 3P - 3 modules (S203) and four-pole 4P - 4 module (S204).

ABB S200 two-module circuit breakers are available with two releases in each pole 2P, and with one 1P + N (S201 NA). Also four-module automatic machines ABB 4P or 3P + N (S203 NA). That is, there is no protection in the neutral conductor circuit.

For people who understand little about electrics or who do not want to understand the intricacies of the wiring diagram with multiple machines, I recommend installing 2P or 1P + N machines in the electrical panels of apartments or private houses, i.e. two-pole or two-module.

Automatic machines ABB 2P (1P + N) or 1P? Bipolar or single pole?

The difference in the connection scheme of single-pole ABB 1P or 2P (1P + N) circuit breakers to the RCD is significant. In the first case, we save the budget and space in the shield, but we get difficulties in finding the cable line, due to which the RCD is turned off. In the second case, there are more costs, but higher safety (time for finding a current leakage) and a more understandable scheme in which an untrained person, for example, a wife, can determine the cable line due to which the RCD is triggered)).

I will consider and show you both options with connecting machines to a group RCD. How to find a line or machine because of which the RCD cuts out. And you already decide for yourself which ABB 1P or 2P (1P + N) machines will be used for group.

Option number 1. Scheme of the apartment shield, where three are connected to the RCD machine gun 1R.

Suppose we have a current leakage on cable line No. 3, the RCD is turned off. How to determine on which line of the 3 we have a leak? The very first thing to do with any version of the circuit (1P or 2P) is to pull out the plugs of all household appliances from the sockets on these cable lines and try to turn on the RCD. Current leakage can be caused by a broken instrument insulation. If this does not help, then we go to the shield;

  • It is necessary to remove the voltage from the shield by turning off the introductory machine or knife switch so as not to touch the live parts in the electrical panel;
  • Disconnect the neutral working wires of the cables from the “N” terminal block, to which the neutral wires of cables No. 1, 2, 3 are connected (for each RCD - its own separate terminal block for machines;
  • We connect the neutral wire of cable No. 1 to the terminal block "N";
  • We turn on the introductory machine in the electrical panel, the RCD and the cable circuit breaker No. 1;
  • We connect the working zero of cable No. 2 to the terminal block "N" and turn on the introductory machine, RCD and cable machine No. 2;
  • If the RCD does not turn off, turn off the power again in the apartment panel and the RCD;
  • We connect the zero of the last cable No. 3 to the terminal block "N«;
  • The RCD will turn off (we have a leak on cable No. 3);
  • We turn off the power supply of the electrical panel again;
  • Disconnect the neutral wire of cable No. 3 from the terminal block “N and turn off machine No. 3”;
  • We turn on the power supply of the shield, turn on the machines No. 1 and 2 so that the devices and lighting from these lines work;
  • We are looking for where we have a leak on cable No. 3 (we examine the junction boxes, check the wire connections, the contacts of sockets and switches).

Briefly, then it is necessary to disconnect the neutral wires automatic machines, the group RCD of which is turned off. AND connect them one by one on the terminal block, including the corresponding machine. On which machine the RCD will turn off, then there is a leak.

Option number 2. Wiring diagram bipolar circuit breakers 2P (1P+N) to RCD.

This option is, of course, easier. You can not remove the plugs from the sockets, do not remove the covers of the shield and do not turn off the voltage completely. Enough:

  • Disable all 2P machines corresponding to the RCD;
  • Turn them on one by one;
  • When you turn on which machine we turn off the RCD, there is a current leak.

In the example diagram, you need to turn off all the machines Q 1,2,3,4, turn on the RCD, and turn on the Q1 machine first, then Q2, then the Q3 machine, and finally Q4, at which the RCD will turn off. We turn off the Q4 machine, turn on the RCD and ABB Q1,2,3 machines and look for damage (leakage) on the Q4 line.

Questions and answers for the S200, S803C series ABB

Dmitry asks:

What do the letters B, C, D mean in the designations of modular automata?

Short circuit operation characteristic. It is selected according to the type of load that the machine will protect

B 3-5 are designed to protect active loads and long lighting lines with TN and IT grounding systems (for kettles, water heaters, etc.).

C 5-10 are designed to protect circuits with active and inductive loads with low impulse current (used in 90% of cases when installed in apartments and residential premises.)

Usually, automatic machines with characteristic C are installed in apartments.

D 10-20 is used for loads with high impulse (starting) currents and high switching current (low-voltage transformers, lightning arresters, lifting mechanisms, pumps)
K 8-15 active-inductive loads, electric motors, transformers Z 2-3 electronics

Below are the time-current characteristics of machines with characteristic B (curve 1) and with characteristic C curve 2

Alex asks:

How to choose machines to build a selective circuit in an apartment?

Technician's response:

If you want to build a selective circuit for overload current, then in this case it will be enough just to build a circuit with an increase in the ratings of higher-level automata. That is, for example, we put an automatic machine with a nominal value of 16A on the outlet line, and an introductory machine for 25A.

It is much more difficult to build a short-circuit selective circuit. Here it is necessary to use the selectivity tables from the manufacturers' catalogs.

Although some designers, in their projects, try to build a selective circuit of automata according to the response characteristics (indicate lower automata with characteristic B, and higher ones with characteristic C or D). Which is probably not the best solution

Everyone knows that the Swedish-Swiss company ABB has long been a world leader in the production of electrical equipment. All manufactured products undergo the strictest control, which allows them to receive quality certificates without delay and meet all accepted norms and standards.
Electrical devices have recently filled our life like an avalanche and the safety issues of their use are becoming more and more relevant. The safety of using electrical appliances and devices is even more in demand in the old housing stock, where the use of a large number of current consumers was not initially planned.
The use of modern electrical devices, such as ABB circuit breakers, can minimize the likelihood of an emergency and negative consequences.
The main element of electrical wiring protection is a circuit breaker or, as it is also called, a circuit breaker.
ABB breakers are designed for infrequent switching on and their main function is to protect the cable from overload and short circuit currents. That is, the task of the machine is to prevent short circuits and overloads beyond the tolerance.
ABB manufactures circuit breakers with one, two, three and four poles. The material from which the circuit breakers are made allows them to serve for many years, while maintaining their technical characteristics.
Each device must pass the parameters check before being sent for implementation.

Modular circuit breakers ABB S200 series

A series of modular circuit breakers S201, S202, S203 and S204 provides for the presence of one, two, three and four-pole circuit breakers with rated currents from 1A to 63A. Moreover, the last digit in the designation of the series indicates the number of poles of the machine.
The S201 series is used for phase conductors supplying lighting systems. These circuit breakers are replacements for old fuses and allow you to restore power much faster than replacing a fuse.
The device of the S201 series circuit breakers is very simple. When the line is overloaded, the bimetallic plate inside the machine heats up and bends. Bending, it acts on the release lever. The release breaks the circuit and the power is cut off.
Protection against short circuit currents occurs due to the reaction of the electromagnetic coil to the increased electric current. The coil drives the core, which is connected to the release and the circuit breaks. This is how protection is implemented in the ABB S201 series circuit breaker.
A series of three-pole circuit breakers S203 is mainly intended for networks with a cross-section of current-carrying conductors of not more than 2.5 sq. mm. Often it is used for small apartments in high-rise buildings.
All S200 Series MCBs have additional features that make them stand out from similar devices:

  • . the possibility of connecting more than one conductor at the same time,
  • . the possibility of using conductors with solid and stranded,
  • . the possibility of simultaneous connection of conductors with different cross-sections,
  • . the possibility of using additional accessories,
  • . easy to use and install,
  • . possibility of installation not only in vertical, but also in horizontal position.

Automatic circuit breakers ABB series S 280 UC

ABB's S280 UC series circuit breakers are special devices that have no coupling between components. This feature allows you to keep the device working even if its case is damaged by high temperature. S280 series circuit breakers are designed for rated currents from 80A to 125A.
Also, S280 UC series machines have some advantages of S200 series machines, such as:

  • . possibility of connection to the lower or upper terminals (reversibility),
  • . possibility of simultaneous connection of wires and buses,
  • . other characteristics.

The circuit breakers of the S280 UC series are available with a "K" characteristic. These machines are indispensable when connecting electric motors and control systems. While other machines cannot withstand starting loads and do not perform their tasks, these machines do an excellent job with starting overloads and current surges. The operating voltage for single-pole S280 UC series circuit breakers is 220V, while the other versions (2, 3, 4 poles) are 440V.
A special highly sensitive bimetallic plate in the design of "K" machines is the main difference between these machines. Such a device reliably protects all elements of a complex system from overcurrents.
Circuit breakers of the S280 UC series and version "Z" are circuit breakers for protection against small overloads, acting for a long time, as well as against short-circuit currents.
ABB's range of circuit breakers has many different series and designs. And each series has its own characteristics and advantages over other series.
The presented circuit breakers are characterized by a very long service life and reliability. In addition, it is worth noting that the declared characteristics, features and parameters always correspond to reality, while some manufacturers have a range of values for some characteristics. Therefore, giving preference to ABB products, along with the device, you gain confidence in quality and durability.
