The choice of a chandelier in the hall: interesting solutions in different styles. Which chandelier to choose and how to do it correctly Why choose a chandelier in the interior

The very phrase “chandelier in the hall” already makes the mind draw a lighting device that is larger, brighter and “smarter” than lamps from other rooms of the house. This is not surprising, since the hall or living room is a place for family evenings, solemn meetings and feasts. This means that the chandelier should not only match the surrounding interior, but also be presentable, helping to create a certain atmosphere.

Lighting manufacturers understand the versatility of a room such as a living room, so they offer customers a huge variety of models to choose from. They differ not only in design, materials or colors, but also in construction.

The catalog of the online store "VamSvet" presents suspended and ceiling models. You should probably start a conversation with them.

What to choose: ceiling or pendant chandelier?

Here the choice will be quite simple, since it depends solely on the ratio of the height of the chandelier to the height of the ceiling of a particular living room. You can choose a model based on a specific formula: the height of the chandelier from the mount to the extreme point of the shades or the body in the lower part should not exceed? overall height of the living room. Otherwise, you can simply touch the chandelier with your head. And the device itself will look disproportionately massive, bulky.

You need to talk about the width of the chandeliers. It is considered optimal if the width (diameter) of the chandelier at the extreme points does not exceed 1/3 of the width of the room. This formula applies to square and rectangular rooms. Only in a rectangular living room, the ratio of the diameter of the lighting device to the width of the room is calculated on a short wall.

For example, for a living room with sides of 4 by 7 meters, you should look for a chandelier with a diameter of no more than 133 centimeters.

The design of pendant models involves the use of chains or the cord itself with fastening at the end, with which the lamp is attached to the ceiling. The advantage of this design is that if you need to reduce the length of the chain, then it will be enough just to remove the extra links, and the cord can be shortened or rolled up and hidden under a special cap.

Ceiling models are fixed to the ceiling, they have a small height and are located in a horizontal plane.

A conditional disadvantage of the ceiling model can be considered that, in comparison with pendant chandeliers, they do not look so impressive - their size is smaller, they do not have so many decorative elements, etc. But even here there are exceptions.

It should be noted here that ceiling and pendant chandeliers with flexible mounts are the most well-known options for a wide range of buyers. But for several years now, chandeliers on a bar have been rapidly gaining popularity.

The chandelier on the rod is located vertically and is motionless. Instead of a chain, she uses a metal tube. It is firmly fixed on the base, so this chandelier will not sway.

As for the possibility of adjusting the height of the case, it is provided in most modern models. You can lower or raise the level of the ceiling lights in just a couple of seconds!

To summarize: in a living room with high ceilings, it is better to use hanging chandeliers on a rod, chain or cord. But in those rooms where the room with a ceiling height of up to 2.8 meters, it is better to stay on the ceiling version.

Key selection factors

The type of construction is the first thing you will have to decide in the process of choosing a chandelier for the living room. Now let's move on to the following factors, based on which, buyers make a choice in favor of a particular model.

Design

Design is very important when choosing a chandelier. It is the appearance of lighting fixtures that attracts the greatest attention of buyers - this is a fact. Therefore, it would be right to immediately tell you how to find the perfect model for a particular interior.

Product design is not something abstract.

It is a combination of specific elements:

  • stylistics (shapes, lines, decorative elements);
  • colors;
  • materials.

And the quality of design can be determined by the ratio of "showiness-efficiency". In other words, the design of the chandelier is good, which looks beautiful and does an excellent job of lighting.

Stylistics

In order not to miscalculate with the purchase, you need to choose a chandelier in accordance with the style of furniture and living room decor.

There are dozens (if not hundreds) of styles, but they all fall into four main categories:

  • traditional;
  • modern;
  • modern;
  • ethnic.

The traditional ones include those that clearly indicate any historical era - Baroque, Rococo, Empire, Victorian, Romanesque, classicism. Each of them is unique in its own way, but they all look spectacular, expensive, classic.

Modern styles are already neoclassical. These include art nouveau, art deco, modern, which have absorbed the features of traditional and modern styles.

In modern ones, the simplicity of forms is inextricably linked with functionality, and the coldness of some materials (glass, metal) is diluted with the bright warm light of lamps.

African, Moroccan, Mediterranean, Oriental, Scandinavian, Provence are all examples of ethnic styles. Among the features inherent in such styles, elements are found that are characteristic of the cultures of different peoples. Therefore, buying a chandelier in a hall in this style implies some knowledge of the history, culture, and traditions of individual ethnic groups.

A few illustrative examples

To make the style of the main categories more understandable, consider examples from the catalog of the VamSveta online store.

The Elvan Russian pendant chandelier is the perfect example of traditional style. Thin weightless forms, gently curved lines, complex image. Faceted pendants imitating crystal and the snow-white color of the case add "classicity".

Such a chandelier would be appropriate in an interior with a predominance of white, with furniture with carved legs, ornate patterns on textiles, wallpaper.

The suspended version of Eurosvet is made according to the canons of the modern Art Deco style. To understand this is quite simple - in her design at the same time there was a place for ornate classical elements, pendants, a lampshade, chrome-plated metal, and colored textiles. It is easy to imagine such a model in a living room that replicates the interiors of the early 20th century.

A modern apartment or house with this chandelier will be filled with warm light, a chic atmosphere, and will become much more elegant.

The Style SP5 Clear pendant chandelier fits perfectly into the framework of the modern loft style.

The model of the Spanish brand Crystal Lux attracts with simple shapes, lines, materials. But from this simplicity, the designers managed to create a spectacular solution that combines minimalism and utility.

The ceiling version of Citilux Kyoto will delight lovers of oriental style. At first glance, it may seem that the model is made in a modern minimalist style. In fact, its design is a slightly modernized "reading" of Japanese traditional forms.

For a more complete imitation of Japanese style, Citilux Kyoto is made of brown wood and white frosted glass.

If you like the ancient East, Japanese culture, natural materials - feel free to choose this model. For convenience, you can simply go to the subsection "Oriental chandeliers".

Help for the buyer

We understand how difficult it is to choose a chandelier or other lighting fixture for an interior designed in a particular style. Therefore, we are pleased to present you with a model selection service. Experienced consultants of the online store "VamSvet" will carefully study your project, listen to your wishes and requirements in order to choose exactly the model that will easily, subtly merge into the interior, becoming its visual and stylistic center.

Color

In design, color plays a much larger role than buyers are used to relegating to it. Choosing a chandelier in the hall should be based not only on the rule "like - dislike." It is necessary to take into account the colors of furniture and decor that dominate in the interior, the types of finishing materials, as well as the level of influence of a particular color on the mood, psyche, and emotions of a person.

If at the moment the choice of the color of the chandelier is not yet limited by rigid frames, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the main colors and their roles:

  • a chandelier with shades, white lampshades gives light that is associated with freshness, open space, lightness. This color will not visually clutter up the space of even a compact living room;
  • beige, cream, yellowish shades of plafonds, chandelier lampshades will make the light warmer, "home". They will be appropriate in the interiors of a wide variety of styles;
  • black - the choice for an interior with a claim. The black chandelier looks solid, expensive, spectacular. Black and white are two truly versatile colors that suit any room style;
  • red, blue, green, lilac and other colors are most often chosen by people who seek to give the living room originality, expressiveness. And if the model is chosen successfully, then the result will impress every viewer!

materials

The list of materials used by manufacturers to create chandeliers is pretty standard:

  • metal;
  • glass;
  • plastic;
  • textile;
  • natural wood;
  • crystal.

Of course, manufacturers offer other materials, but so far concrete, fur, marble can only be seen in individual design models.

As for more traditional materials, we note that the trend of the last decade - environmental friendliness - does not lose its position even today. Therefore, textiles, wood or crystal are still more popular than even the highest quality plastic.

Materials, like flowers, can also influence the emotional perception of the chandelier and the entire interior of the living room.

Chromed metal, for example, makes the lighting fixture more rigorous and the light colder.

Forged chandelier bases look solid and strong. A classic (Romanesque, Empire) interior with a wrought iron chandelier looks historically more authentic.

Crystal sparkling with millions of rays adds solemnity and palatiality to the room. Textiles or natural wood “warm”, giving the living room an atmosphere of homely warmth and comfort.

Light direction

When choosing a chandelier in the hall, you need to consider the direction of light propagation. In other words, you need to know exactly where such a chandelier will shine.

The bottom line is this: shades, floor lamps of various models can be directed up, down, to the sides. Therefore, the light will not spread evenly, but in certain directions more intensively.

To make the right choice, consider: for what purposes the living room will be used most often and in which area the chandelier will be located.

If the hall is a place for a relaxed family vacation, a place for watching TV or listening to music, choose models with a luminous flux to the ceiling. Or chandeliers that give muted uniform lighting.

Choose the type of light bulb

Manufacturers from around the world vying with each other offer customers thousands of various models of chandeliers for the hall. Among them are also lighting fixtures with different types of light bulbs. The modern buyer, in addition to style, color, materials, model sizes, can choose which sources will give light to his living room:

  • incandescent lamps;
  • halogen lamps;
  • compact fluorescent lamps ("energy saving");
  • LED lamp.

All types have their advantages and disadvantages. Now we will dwell on each type in more detail in order to provide readers with maximum information for review and reflection.

Incandescent lamps

Incandescent lamps are a classic. Yes, uneconomical. Yes, short lived. But for many buyers, these shortcomings pale in front of a few strengths.

In particular, incandescent lamps:

  • affordable;
  • sold everywhere;
  • do not contain mercury and other harmful substances;
  • give light with a pleasant warm shade, which makes the interior more "home";
  • give light that does not strain the eyes, does not cause fatigue.

Here it is necessary to mention one more point: any incandescent lamp heats up relatively strongly. It is difficult to call this a disadvantage, but when choosing a chandelier for a living room, you need to study the instruction manual. In it, the manufacturer certainly indicates the maximum allowable power of incandescent lamps for a particular model. If everything is done correctly, heating the bulb will not lead to deformation of the shades or melting.

Halogen lamps

This and other types of light bulbs are easiest to compare with conventional incandescent bulbs. Such a comparison will be the most clear and understandable to the average buyer. We will do the same.

Compared to incandescent lamps, halogen lamps are more economical. They have a similar "warm" shade of light. They also get very hot.

The disadvantages are usually attributed to the poor tolerance of voltage drops. If the voltage in the electrical network is unstable, such light bulbs quickly fail.

In the light of halogen lamps, ultraviolet radiation is present. Therefore, experts do not recommend using them without special filters. This issue is especially relevant for families with small children and people whose skin has an increased susceptibility to UV radiation.

Compact fluorescent lamps

Compact fluorescent lamps are called energy-saving light bulbs, the popularity of which has increased significantly in recent years. Needless to say, it's not unreasonable.

This type of bulbs:

  • about five times more economical than incandescent lamps;
  • can work up to 15 thousand hours;
  • perfectly tolerates high voltage in the electrical network;
  • has a bright white glow;
  • at the same power as incandescent lamps, it illuminates a large area;
  • heats up less.

There are also disadvantages. "Energy savers":

  • at the end of the operational period, they gradually lose the level of light output;
  • do not turn on immediately, but with some delay;
  • do not turn on if the voltage in the electrical circuit is lowered by more than 10 percent of the nominal value;
  • create radio interference;
  • contain free mercury in the flask, which, if the integrity of the flask is damaged, will become a source of danger to the health of others.

Most importantly, the eyes get tired quickly from the light of such lamps. And many hours of being under the light of "energy-saving" negatively affects vision and health.

LED lamps (LED, LED)

The popularity of LED lamps at this stage is growing rapidly.

Still would! Just take a look at their benefits:

  • 10 (ten!) times more economical than incandescent lamps. When compared with compact fluorescent models, LEDs will be 3 times more energy efficient;
  • record duration of work (some manufacturers promise up to 11 years of continuous glow of LED lamps of their own production);
  • do not contain harmful substances (such as mercury).

Unfortunately, the disadvantages of LED lamps are also significant. LED lamps:

  • cost 10 or more times more than incandescent lamps;
  • have a spectrum of luminescence, which 80 percent of respondents call unpleasant, inanimate. This drawback is eliminated with the help of special equalizing filters. But their use will reduce the luminous flux, which will reduce the area of illumination and the very efficiency of the lamps;
  • LEDs require a stable, even voltage in the electrical circuit. So far, our power grids are not able to provide such conditions, which is why the degradation process is observed in LEDs. As a result, brightness and durability decrease.

By and large, these are all the main advantages / disadvantages of various types of light bulbs. Which one to choose for the living room chandelier is up to you. Our task was simply to provide information for reflection.

Can't decide? Call the online store "VamSvet" - our consultants will help you choose based on specific conditions and requirements.

Lighting area

A distinctive feature of chandeliers (pendant, ceiling, on rods - not the point) is that they illuminate the interiors with at least three light bulbs. The manufacturers themselves, as a rule, offer customers a choice of identical models, differing only in the number of horns.

This is done so that the buyer can independently choose a model, the light of which will be enough to place a certain area.

In other words, if you like a chandelier but it has 9 arms, which is too much for your 22 sqm living room, look for a similar model with fewer arms and light bulbs.

And to understand how much light you need in the living room, use the following information: for bright lighting 1 sq.m. The hall needs an incandescent lamp with a power of 20 watts.

A halogen lamp will illuminate 1 "square" with 13 watts, and an energy-saving lamp with only 4 watts.

Multiply the indicated numbers by the area of your living room, write down the result or remember it. It will definitely come in handy when choosing.

Useful Features

Let's talk about the useful function that is present in the models of modern chandeliers. This is remote control.

At first, this feature was perceived by buyers as a fun, but unnecessary excess. However, over time, it became clear that the remote saves the time of the owners. With it, they also adjust the lighting to the mood and depending on the need.

The boards are different. It depends on the capabilities of each chandelier provided by the manufacturer, on the number of lamps, the presence of dimmers, timers, etc.

The most fully functional remotes for the most expensive chandeliers allow you to:

  • turn on / off the chandelier;
  • turn on / off the light bulbs in separate groups;
  • turn off the chandelier with a delay. This function allows you to turn off the device, but leave the room 10-20 seconds before the power goes out, leaving the remote control itself on a table or cabinet away from the door;
  • create a "presence effect" - when the chandelier is off, the lamps turn on for a while with a certain frequency. Thus, from the street it seems that someone is at home. And this is an important factor in ensuring the passive safety of an apartment or house.

Agree, it's nice to adjust the brightness of the lighting without getting up from the couch. But it will be even more pleasant to come home and find the premises safe and sound, frightening the thieves with the “presence effect”.

In conclusion

That, in fact, is all that we wanted to tell you about chandeliers. Therefore, now the question "How to choose a chandelier in the hall?" you yourself will be able to give an accurate, competent answer and be sure that you bought the ideal device. And it is not difficult to find a suitable model in the VamSvet online store. Choose, find, call, order.

The choice of a chandelier is always a responsible decision, since the light source can change any interior beyond recognition. To emphasize the design of the house, add elegance to a simple room and just cheer yourself up, you should purchase a chandelier not by the usual poke method, but after studying the products. In the market for such devices today you can find a wide range of lamps, which are made in different styles and equipped with the latest technologies. Therefore, the question of how to choose a chandelier requires the most serious approach in order to avoid mistakes.

Design

What is a chandelier made of? If you understand the structure of most lighting fixtures, you can immediately decide which model is required.

  • The main body of the lamp is a suspension or base with a base where the horns are directed. Below are the cartridges on which the diffuser and the lamp itself are attached. On top of the chandelier there is a cover-stub that covers the home electrical wiring and wire connections.
  • The reflector may not be in all chandeliers. The main purpose of the mirror surface is to distribute the light flux throughout the room. In turn, the task of the diffuser is to evenly distribute the light.
  • Lampshades and plafonds, in terms of design, are the most important part of the chandelier. If they are made of cheap plastic, then the lamp will look like poor quality. In addition to glass, elements can also be made from fabric, such as silk. This creates a fire hazard, but a conscientious manufacturer will always minimize light bulb contact with the lampshade. The lampshades made of paper and wood also add coziness to the apartment. In a large room, you will need a wide lampshade or several shades.

Dimensions

To understand how to choose the right chandelier for any room, you must first find out the area of the room. In this process, the dimensions of the house play a huge role, because it is undesirable for the chandelier to make the interior redundant or, on the contrary, to remain invisible in general. Proportionality also allows you to achieve optimal luminous flux in specific conditions. Thus, when buying a lamp, significant parameters are height, number of horns, diameter.

For the convenience of buyers, a simple formula has been developed that allows you to understand what size chandelier is required for an apartment. It is necessary to add the width and length of the room, indicated in meters, and multiply them by 10. You will get the required diameter of the device in cm.

In addition to the total area, do not forget to consider the height of the ceilings and the shape of the room. For example, you can choose a crystal chandelier in a room with high ceilings. Pendant lights fill most of the space, so they are not suitable for an apartment with 2.5 meters in height. Before hanging the chandelier, make sure that you will not hit it with your head or hand. Low ceilings go well only with flat ceiling chandeliers. Such models visually increase the territory and even add air. You can also purchase a lamp with small shades that direct the luminous flux upwards.

A narrow room goes well with an elongated lighting fixture. It copes with the task of high-quality lighting, and also goes well with additional floor lamps, lamps and sconces. A square room requires a chandelier in the center of the room so that the light reaches all corners evenly. If your luminaire is oriented to the height of a standard ceiling, simply lengthen the cord. The main thing is that the eyes are comfortable, and the lower part of the room does not remain in the dark. Also keep in mind that the hall combined with the kitchen or other combined areas must have at least two light sources.

Power and technical details

In addition to the size of the lamp, it is also important to consider its power. It largely depends on whether an additional light source is needed for a particular area. If the ceilings in the apartment do not exceed 3 meters, you can use the tips on the power of the incandescent lamp:

  • rooms where bright light is needed, i.e. living room and kitchen, require about 20 watts per 1 m1;
  • the average level of lighting is typical for offices, a bathroom, a child's room. Here, 15018 watts per 1 m1 is enough;
  • subdued light can be left in the bedroom, where lamps are bought at the rate of 10-12 watts per 1 m1.

The total power of the lighting device is made up of the parameter of all light bulbs. It turns out that the living room needs a chandelier with a power of 150 to 300 W, 120-150 W is enough for the kitchen, and 80-100 W for the bathroom. If you can’t determine exactly, you can make the power a little more, but purchase an adjustable switch. This trick will also allow you to use the chandelier as a night light if necessary.

It should be noted that when purchasing a chandelier, you must definitely ask about the level of its energy consumption, switching modes and cartridges. The latter elements can be made from both plastic and ceramics, so the cartridges have different maximum heating temperatures and different possibilities for the power of suitable light bulbs.

Before buying, experts also recommend looking inside the base of the lamp. Well, if all connections are threaded, and soldering will replace rivets. This will make repairs easier if necessary. Naturally, the chandelier should have solid internal wires, as well as a metal reflector that will protect the device from overheating. The extreme detail determines not only the cost of the illuminator, but also the quality of the light in it. A heat protector is not needed only if the light bulb in the device is less than 40 watts.

If the chandelier is suspended, remember that the section of the suspended elements, i.e. their thickness should inspire confidence. When the hook is made of soft metal or aluminum, it is most likely a fake fixture, because the safety margin is provided by steel. Do not forget to also evaluate the appearance of all decorative elements and shades. There should be no thread irregularities and crooked socles. And in order to fully verify the authenticity of the device, you can spin it around its own axis and look at the level of balancing.

Fastening

To understand the question of how to choose the right chandelier, it is worth deciding on its type of attachment to the ceiling. Today it is customary to allocate ceiling and pendant lights. The choice of a particular type depends not only on taste preferences, but also on ceilings, their finishes, heights and materials.

Pendant lamp is also called classic. In fact, this is an elegant chandelier with twisted arms, which looks quite impressive, but with proper decoration retains its elegance. However, pendant lighting fixtures are suitable if you have a large house with high ceilings, otherwise the dimensions will be unjustified. In addition, due to the presence of a suspension, the role of which is played by a spring, a decorative rod or a chain, such a chandelier is located at a certain distance from the ceiling. In a small room, this will visually reduce the free space. Therefore, the best option for using hanging chandeliers is a hall or a large-scale living room, but by no means a compact kitchen or bedroom.

Ceiling lights come to the rescue in small living spaces. As a rule, these are plates or shades that fit snugly to the top of the room, without springs and chains. It is difficult to get to such devices, so they are hung quite often in the children's room. They also do not create unnecessary shadows. If you are choosing a chandelier that bounces off the ceiling, consider adjusting the bulbs. In dark interiors, such ceiling fixtures can create a feeling of gloom, so a sconce or floor lamp will definitely be needed.

Today, designers are especially popular with an elegant domed ceiling, which organically complements any modern interior. At the same time, the light is directed upwards, and this adds coziness. In this case, it must be borne in mind that dark glass or bright plastic transmit light rays worse. When choosing such a ceiling, the type of ceiling in the apartment matters. For example, exposure to light is not terrible for a concrete pavement, so any powerful lamps can be placed in a chandelier. As for the stretch ceiling or wooden top, halogen or fluorescent lamps are required here. The correct selection of light bulbs facilitates the operation of the device, because when the lamp burns out, to change it, you need to remove the cover. The inconvenience of changing light bulbs is one of the main disadvantages of a ceiling chandelier.

Types of light bulbs

Of great importance for the future chandelier is what types of lamps you plan to screw in. Different shades of light and its brightness should be correlated with the lampshades of the device, as well as determine the height of the lamp and the number of shades.

  • The classic incandescent lamp gives a soft warm glow. But it gets very hot, so chandeliers made of plastic or textiles can suffer or even catch fire. If you incorrectly calculated the power, the body or ceiling of the device can quickly melt or crack. However, today they offer a large assortment of such light bulbs. In addition to different bases, you can find, for example, frosted lamps that provide soft lighting.
  • The halogen type is characterized by high color quality and long working life. Such lamps are needed in the case of clear illumination and a powerful luminous flux. They are not often used in homes because they create an uncomfortable sensation for the eyes. But halogen bulbs are a good option for lanterns in the garden or summer cottage.
  • Fluorescent bulbs are quite economical, however, they always have a cold white glow. Their advantage is uniform illumination with high brightness. Such an element can be safely screwed into a kitchen chandelier. But for a permanent stay in the room, the luminescent option is not suitable - the eyes get tired. In addition to lamps with a conventional base, you can find tube-shaped fluorescent lamps. It is very important not to stumble upon a fake, which often emits a strange green light that is unpleasant to the eye.

"Tension" zone

If you have a stretch ceiling planned for your home, you will have to buy a chandelier with numerous reservations. To begin with, please note that the PVC film of the coating deforms and stretches at 80 ° C, so the new lamp should not give off too much heat to the environment. Even if you have a polyester fabric, it will change color dramatically when heated.

The chandelier is mounted not on a stretch ceiling, but on a draft version, using a mounting hook. Of course, it is better to buy a lamp in advance so that the workers can make the right cut in the coating for the chandelier. Devices with very complex mounting schemes are not suitable, because they injure the tension coating. In the case of buying a ceiling chandelier, you will have to work hard. The stretch ceiling will need to be cut quite hard, as the mounting plate requires a lot of space. If mistakes are made, the canvas may sag or simply lose its aesthetic value.

If you want a glossy stretch ceiling for your home, keep in mind that it reflects the rays. When diffused light is needed, the bulbs should not be left open at the top. In this case, crystal chandeliers look great, which shine beautifully with such a coating. A lamp in the shape of a hemisphere also plays with gloss and visually enlarges the room, raises the ceiling. But a chandelier with lamps in the form of candles is only suitable for a matte canvas. Horizontal multi-track models look good with any canvas.

Above the plane of the stretch ceiling, as a rule, there is always free unventilated space. You can hide power converters for low-voltage devices there, but they will quickly break down. So it is more logical to place these details in convenient niches with access to air. Converters are needed, first of all, for LED and halogen lamps.

If you are afraid to heat the surface of the stretch ceiling, choose a chandelier with shades or horns looking down and sideways. The distance from the bulbs to the coating should be 20 cm. At the same time, you can give free rein to your imagination and buy a model with beautiful decoration. Silk, beads, colored glass pendants - any elements are combined with the canvas.

When you still need chandeliers with horns pointing upwards, or models without shades and reflectors, buy LED and energy-saving light bulbs. Thanks to them, you can protect the stretch ceiling from stains of burnt dust. Only they need to be placed at a distance of at least 40 cm. By the way, when purchasing a lamp with a reflector, give preference to steel sheets located above the lamp. Then the canvas will definitely not overheat.

Halogen bulbs for stretch ceilings should have a minimum power of no more than 35 watts, as they heat up very quickly. They are only suitable for vertical chandeliers with arms facing upwards in case of high ceilings. In another situation, it is necessary to screw such a lamp only into the ceiling lamps pointing down.

Appearance

In order for the chandelier to fit perfectly into the interior of your apartment, you need to pay special attention to its shape and color. As you know, classic models include several light bulbs, and their shades are decorated with tinted glass. Due to the bronze or metal base, such a lamp can be recognized as universal. A calm living room looks especially good with a chandelier of this design. As for lamps with a predominance of geometric shapes, they can also be made of metal, glass and plastic, and this allows them to organically fit into modern or high-tech styles.

According to their shapes, chandeliers can be divided into rounded and elongated. The location of the bulbs is possible, both in one line and in a vicious circle. If the lamps are located one after the other, most likely the lamp will be long. Some models even reach 3 meters. The advantage of such chandeliers is that they distribute the light fairly evenly, which means they are ideal for narrow hallways and accents on a dining or bar table.

Chandeliers, in which the bulbs are screwed in around the circumference, are more traditional, so their range is much wider. The light spot diverges on the sides of the center, and outwardly the device looks like a bunch of grapes or mountain ash. For residential premises, such chandeliers are very convenient due to the creation of diffused light. In addition, they can easily designate a separate area in the apartment, for example, a desktop.

Since there are so many styles of home organization today, it's best to choose a chandelier that doesn't contrast too much with the overall idea of your interior. Let's look at a few examples.

  • Multifunctional and comfortable furniture, a minimum of decor and restraint in the design of the walls are the characteristics of a modern style, the main principles of which are convenience and practicality. In this case, you can safely purchase a lamp that adds charm and coquetry to the overall interior. Refusing excessive pathos, you should pay attention to crystal chandeliers with a small number of pendants or spheres.
  • People with a rich imagination often choose eclecticism to create a living room with lots of patterns, original decor and vintage furniture. With such a variety of textures, an intricate interior rarely needs an unusual lamp. A simple chandelier with a concise shape is quite suitable to complete the design. The second option is to choose a lighting fixture with a similar mood. For example, multi-colored pendants on a chandelier look spectacular, due to which the light is reflected in several shades.
  • Refined classicism, as a rule, is present in spacious apartments, whose owners love luxury and reliable materials. The ceiling in such rooms often has stucco and implies greater light saturation. Classic chandeliers are rarely dim, so the hall should be crowned with a large installation with a sophisticated crystal decoration. You can also purchase a carob chandelier, the lampshade of which has more than one tier and is equipped with faceted pendants for additional beauty.
  • Neoclassicism differs from the previous style of rooms with less pathos and the presence of comfort, which is combined with presentability. In such interiors, the carob chandelier looks great, which has pendants and openwork details. The main thing is that the accessory does not make the design heavier, but adds airiness and lightness. Therefore, the lamp should be chosen transparent or plain.
  • The Art Deco style is characterized by a masculine character and a certain brutality in the interior. The abundance of leather furniture, laconic forms and monochrome finishes require a simple, but at the same time status chandelier. Even such a self-sufficient apartment will look good with a thin and elegant light source. You can purchase both a model with a touch of luxury and a delicate lamp resembling a flower. In this case, the question of which chandelier to choose is largely determined by the decision to focus on it. The most spectacular can be considered a contrasting version with the original color or unusual texture.
  • Apartments in the spirit of contemporary are created for a comfortable life. Therefore, the design in this case is quite restrained, and the furniture is functional to the maximum. In this case, to choose a chandelier, you need to look at the range of modern fixtures and pay attention to those devices in which the simplicity of forms displaces any pathos.
  • Sincerity, unity with nature and comfort characterize the country style that is popular today. Almost every item in such an interior, if you look at the corresponding photos, has a reference either to natural materials or to natural color shades. In such a situation, a chandelier made of bending wood will look very impressive. Today, there is a huge selection of rattan or beech lamps on the market, which are even decorated with fragments of animal horns. Also, the lighting device may resemble a pile of dry leaves or a pile of branches under the ceiling.
  • The style of France in the interior of the house is always a well-thought-out refinement and a manifestation of fine taste even in small things. An elegant chandelier that can imitate a half-blown delicate flower bud should scatter soft and necessarily warm light in such an apartment. When purchasing light bulbs for it, immediately discard the cold light.
  • If you are planning to equip your home in a fusion style, then the question of which chandelier to choose is unlikely to bother you for too long. The fact is that this interior is characterized by a combination of classical elements with ethnic or modern design features. The contradictory nature of this direction can be manifested by the presence of African souvenirs and European wall colors in one room. Therefore, the chandelier in the apartment needs an unusual and catchy. The choice is huge - from gold-plated to bronze shimmer. The luminaire can have both glass and ceramic shades.

When you have already decided on the design of your home and the light source for it, you need to think about the color scheme of the chandelier. The recommendations of experts boil down to the fact that choosing a lamp with a shade that is the second color in the general interior is a win-win option. So, for example, in a traditional interior, most likely, the lighting device will be made in warm colors.

It is not worth experimenting with a colored lamp that will emit a certain range of light. The wrong choice in this case is fraught with an unpleasant visual change of shades near the ceiling, wallpaper, furniture. It is also not worth choosing a lamp to match your wallpaper, as this worsens the overall interior.

The color of lampshades and shades on the chandelier also plays a role. In this case, designers tend to believe that the observed shade affects the state of a person with constant contemplation.

  • A yellow ceiling or a transparent / white lampshade with a yellowish light from an incandescent lamp is considered the most optimal and common option, which has a positive effect on vision and does not tire a person during the evening.
  • A white lampshade or a transparent shade with a fluorescent bulb usually imitates daylight, and this increases efficiency.
  • The presence of red shades increases the excitability of the nervous system and blood pressure. The orange tone, in turn, will increase your appetite and speed up your heart rate.
  • Green shades are among the most pleasing to the human eye. This color will reduce pressure, soothe and allow you to work well and relax. As for the blue tones, on the contrary, they relax and even slow down the respiratory rhythms.
  • The purple ceiling is likely to depress the nervous system. The blue lampshade affects about the same, slowing down any human activity.

Room dependency

Of course, when buying a chandelier, we always think about where exactly to hang it. The purpose of the room where the lamp is required determines the size of the device, its color and lighting power.

  • The hall needs a chandelier with bright and warm light so that the room is filled with comfort. For high ceilings, a solemn hanging chandelier is acceptable; in a classic interior, it can be crystal. A hall that is standard in size and shape is most often decorated with a ceiling lamp with shades (no more than 6 pieces). If you want harmonious lighting for an elongated room, buy small ceiling fixtures and place them symmetrically at the top. In all cases, do not forget about the ability to adjust the lighting using a dimmer.
  • The bedroom is always a place of relaxation. In such a situation, the chandelier should complement the interior and not get lost, but at the same time be conducive to relaxation. The product with a lampshade looks most advantageous, besides, it gives a pleasant subdued light. A good chandelier for the bedroom is made of frosted glass or crystal, painted in pleasant halftones and has several modes of operation. It is also convenient to buy a lamp with a control panel. If you do not want to remove dust from the device almost every day, when answering the question of how to choose a chandelier for the bedroom, give preference to models with a minimum of crystal pendants and a fairly compact size.
  • A perky and ornate chandelier is worth buying in a children's room. This is where this accessory should keep the atmosphere of fun going. However, you should never forget about safety, so give up models made of crystal or thin glass. It is best to choose plastic or textile shades. At the same time, ceiling chandeliers are preferable to suspended ones. Determination of the desired color should be left to the child.
  • The hallway needs a chandelier of longitudinal shapes so that the narrow corridor is evenly lit. It is desirable that the streams of light are directed not at the mirrors, but at the person himself. Therefore, it is worth purchasing models with rotary spots that change the angle of illumination. Most often, a strict and modest lamp is chosen for the corridor.
  • A common problem is the lighting fixture in the kitchen. First you need to correctly determine the materials of the chandelier. High humidity and grease drops pose a danger to textile shades, so metal or glass will be preferable. If the kitchen has low ceilings, you can safely hang a round ceiling fixture there. Wooden lamps are allowed only when varnished or painted. A chandelier with forged fragments must have a top layer of mastic to protect it from dirt. In addition to aesthetic functions, the lamp in the kitchen has a lot of tasks related to the distribution of the light flux. Therefore, it is better to choose models with different modes and well-regulated power. For a narrow kitchen, an elongated chandelier or a group of small lamps should be preferred. In a large room, a hanging large model would be appropriate. It is also worth remembering that the kitchen will most likely need combined lighting, i.e. additional devices are needed. As a rule, they allocate a dining area, stove and cabinets.

How well lit each room in the house plays an important role in a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Especially, such a room as a living room, where friends and relatives of the family often gather, should be well-lit. But the choice of a chandelier is associated with important nuances and issues. What kind of chandelier to choose in the living room - a large one with many decors or a miniature and simple one - this is a question that a designer can help with. Although you can approach this issue on your own.

If the living room or other room has low ceilings, then in no case should you buy an overall large chandelier. She will not be able to harmoniously fit into the interior and will simply occupy the common space. It is best if the design of the chandelier for a small room will be mounted to the ceiling, and not hinged. If the ceiling height is sufficient, then a bulky and large chandelier would be an excellent option for the living room. It will be able to qualitatively illuminate the entire area of the room and decorate the design with itself.

In living rooms there is always a need to adjust the brightness and power of lighting. Chandeliers and lamps that are installed in this room usually use several lamps. There may be 5-6 or more. Usually there is always the possibility of separate and phased switching on of several lamps or their simultaneous switching on.

If the chandelier model does not have a separate switching function, you can contact a professional electrician who will make the necessary connection diagram. Although this work is not difficult, it should only be done by a specialist who will do it safely and without damage to the wiring.

The chandelier itself should harmoniously fit into the overall interior of the living room. If it does not correspond to the overall picture, then no matter how beautiful it is, the chandelier will not look here anyway. One of the universal options for a living room chandelier is a product that imitates crystal.

Even though the light in the living room should be bright, it should have a warm undertone. Cold light will create discomfort in the room. To do this, lamps of a special type must be selected, which will create the necessary glow.

Varieties of lamps

One of the common varieties is standard incandescent lamps. They are quite powerful and can illuminate all rooms. But today these types of lamps are already out of active use, because they are being replaced by more modern solutions. One of these solutions is the halogen type of lamp, which is most often used in spotlights or street lamps, because they emit a bright and directional beam of light.

In many stores, the range of halogen lamps is quite large. Among them there are powerful, but not too bright options that will perfectly replace standard incandescent lamps. The only point is the need to monitor their power so that the lamp does not melt the lampshade of the chandelier.

The fluorescent lamp, which emits a bright and even light, has not been recognized as effective for living rooms. Its cold light creates not too cozy conditions in this room. Often, such lamps are used simply for good illumination of a large space. One of the most suitable places to use such a lamp is the kitchen.

LED lamp options emit light of different shades, differ in brightness and do not need to be replaced regularly. The only drawback of such lamps is their high cost. There is nothing to be done here, because the device of such a lamp is more complicated than that of the others, which affects their high price.

Varieties of chandeliers

The choice of how to mount a chandelier is one of the important points when buying it. The two main types are ceiling-mounted and suspended. Suspended mounting type is not practical for low ceilings, and in spacious living rooms it is best to use it.

The classic version of the chandelier for the living room is a variety that has several horns. Most often, such horns imitate candles, but bulbs for these types of chandeliers often do not provide the necessary brightness of light. Look at the options for similar chandeliers from the Chandelier Salon. For large living rooms, this is not the best option, because either the number of horns must be large, or an additional light source will be needed.

Ceiling mounting type chandelier looks aesthetically pleasing and beautiful in small rooms. These types of chandeliers are often in the form of shades, plates, or other flattened variants. Often such chandeliers have decorative elements that radiate away from the main lamp.

The choice of high-quality and beautiful decorations for the home is always a difficult question. Choosing a quality chandelier is even more difficult, because not only its appearance plays a role here, but also the power, as well as the direction of the light. Considering the factors listed above, you can choose the best chandelier option for your living room or other room.

How to choose the right chandelier for the size of the room? An excellent guide for correctly sizing a future chandelier based on the size of the room. When choosing a new chandelier, there are some numbers that you should have on hand before buying. Use the data described in this article to determine exactly what size chandelier is right for your room.

In this recommendation, we will tell you how to choose the right chandelier for the size of the room. People only think about how to choose a lamp for a particular room when faced with repairs. Now there is a huge offer of various lamps and it is often difficult for the buyer to understand how to choose a lamp. In fact, there are several points to consider when choosing a lamp.

1. How to choose a chandelier for the interior.

The choice of a lamp should be approached in the same way as the choice of wallpaper or plumbing, or even stricter, because this piece of furniture is always in sight, it illuminates our home and guests are the first to pay attention to it.

  • Firstly, you need to take into account the height of the ceiling, if the ceilings are high, then the chandelier should be large with a large number of lamps, but of low power. If the ceilings are low, then you should opt for ceiling lights. Here lamps of the "plate" type or chandeliers on a bar may come up. Starlight citilux lamps with a remote control are now very popular. They are equally suitable for both low-ceiling rooms and large rooms due to their power. If the room is rectangular, then the lighting is complemented by interior table lamps or wall sconces.
  • Careful attention should be paid to balancing the size of the chandelier with the size of the room where it will be installed. In addition, you need to consider the amount of light that each chandelier can give. We will talk about this further.
  • It is also worth paying attention to the color of the chandelier, it should be in the overall color scheme of the room. It must be remembered that light wallpapers contribute to the spread of light, dark wallpapers, on the contrary, absorb part of the light, so the chandelier must be chosen more powerfully.

2. Choose lamps for the bedroom.

The bedroom is the place where we rest from what has piled on us during the day. Therefore, as a rule, the chandelier in the bedroom is chosen in soothing colors, but you need to remember about the general style of your interior. Recently, large pendant chandeliers in the classical style are often installed, or vice versa, simple ascetic ones in the Japanese style. If the height of the ceilings does not allow the installation of a pendant lamp, then small ceiling chandeliers come to the rescue, complemented by spotlights located around the perimeter of the room. LED lighting is also often installed.

You always need to remember that one chandelier is not able to create an atmosphere of comfort, designers always select either bedside sconces in the same style as assistants (this must be taken care of at the stage of creating a room design to bring out the wiring), or interior table lamps.

3. Lamps for the kitchen.

Kitchen lighting is one of the important points in the overall style of future comfortable housing. The selection of a lamp for the kitchen also takes place according to the general style of this room. Also, when choosing a lamp for the kitchen, the following important points should be considered:

  • You need to consider the size of the kitchen, the height of the ceilings and the location of the cooking area.
  • It is also worth taking into account the presence of a high-quality hood in the kitchen to remove smoke during cooking, because this will directly affect the lamp.
  • Windows or natural light.

You should always remember that poor-quality work of the hood directly affects what is in the ceiling area, and these are lamps. For example, in a large kitchen, with high ceilings and high-quality smoke extraction, you can use large chandeliers with several glass or fabric shades. Recently, we even notice the installation of luxurious crystal chandeliers, but this is possible only with excellent operation of the hood, otherwise the crystal will quickly become covered with soot and lose its luxurious luster.

Also recently, tire track lights have become widely used. These are fixtures that are installed on a specialized rail and can move along it to the right place without any problems. As a rule, in a modern kitchen, the cooking and eating areas are divided into zones, in this case, hanging lamps are used to illuminate the eating area, located at a height of 75-80 cm above the table, they should not dominate when you are sitting and not be affected, when you leave the table. They must be effective and invisible.

A great solution for a country-style kitchen will be Tiffany lamps or lamps using wood. Tiffany-style lamps are always in great demand in those houses where the kitchen is small, as well as in country houses, complementing the overall country style with patterns created from multi-colored glasses, with fruit or natural motifs.

We also recommend that you pay attention to the lamps in the castle style, or as they are also called, the lamps in the "Forging" style. As a rule, these are lamps with round fittings and light bulbs like a candle in the wind. Most often in brown or black without shades.

4. How to choose an LED chandelier with a remote control?

Let's first define what is the difference between an LED lamp and a chandelier? An LED luminaire is usually a square or round platform covered with a decorative shade to reduce the powerful light output. A chandelier is a more stylish and aesthetic LED fixture, suspended or ceiling-mounted with multiple shades or twisted fittings with built-in LED modules. One way or another, everything is based on the built-in LED module and remote controls, remote control and built-in drivers and RGB lighting.

So how do you choose the right LED chandelier with remote control?

  1. Decide which is best for your room? If you have a low ceiling, then choose from flat plate-type fixtures adjacent to the ceiling. If the ceiling height is from 2.7 m, then you can pay attention to the suspended version.
  2. Lighting area and dimensions of the lamp. LED chandeliers, unlike conventional lighting sources, have a huge efficiency with minimal energy consumption. For example, luminaires of the Starlight series, with a power of only 60w and a diameter of 50 cm, have a lighting area from 14 m 2 to 24 m 2, because they are dimmed from the control panel or wall switch. This suggests that you need to compare the dimensions of the lamp with the room in which it will be installed, it must harmoniously fit into the dimensions of the room.
  3. The lighting area of the LED chandelier is calculated based on its power. But here lies a small pitfall. Due to the fact that LED chandeliers with minimal dimensions can illuminate a decent area, you need to pay attention to the possibility of dimming. As a rule, a chandelier with a remote control can smoothly reduce the lighting power and change the type of light, from warm white to neutral daylight, up to cold white. By creating the type of lighting you need, which ordinary chandeliers on incandescent lamps are deprived of. The calculation of the lighting area is simple: multiply the lamp power by 8 and divide by 20 (the standard is 20w per 1 m 2). For example, an LED chandelier with a Parker coffee CL225295R Citilux remote control with a power of 145w has a lighting area of (145 * 8) / 20 = 58 m 2, but as a rule it is bought for rooms from 20-40 m 2, precisely because of the ability to adjust the lighting to your taste, and its dimensions are harmonious in such an area. But despite this, in its power it can illuminate a large area.

Briefly summarizing all the information, how to choose a chandelier based on the area of the room, then several factors must be taken into account when choosing:

  • You need to decide on the style of the chandelier or lamp.
  • It is necessary to take into account the shape of the room, in a square-shaped room the light from the lamp spreads evenly, while a rectangular-shaped room requires either a lamp with a slightly higher power, or the installation of additional light sources. For example, a floor lamp or a pair of interior table lamps can take on secondary lighting where there is not enough light from the main light source.
  • The lamp in the room should be chosen not so much by the SIZE of the chandelier, but by the amount of light that it can give.
  • Lighting calculation is quite simple, the number of chandelier lamps is taken, multiplied by the power of each lamp and divided by 20(20w - standard of light per 1 sq.m). Let's take as an example Chandelier Mina ARM900-06-N Maytoni, this chandelier for 6 lamps with E14 base, 40w power. Now we do the calculation: 6 lamps * 40w / 20 = 12 sq. m
  • You also need to consider the type of light bulbs you are going to use. The most efficient are LED lamps. By the way, they can help increase the return of light. For example, for the ARM900-06-N Maytoni chandelier, the manufacturer recommends lamps with a maximum power of 40w, which will provide lighting for only 12 sq.m. But if we use LED candle or candle lamps in the wind with a power of 6w, which is significantly less than the limit set by the manufacturer, then this will give an increase in power, because these lamps already shine at 60w.
  • Now let's do room lighting calculation based on the power of the chandelier: 6*60/20=18 sq.m. As you can see, the use of LED lamps made it possible to increase the lighting area by almost a third.
  • When choosing LED lamps, remember that the indicated power of LEDs requires an average multiplication of 8. For example, a popular chandelier with a LED Krown EL334C154.1 Citilux remote control has a power of 154w, like a small lamp with 2-3 lamps for an area of 7-9 m 2 . But this is not so, we multiply 154w * 8/20 = 61 m 2. Thus, a lamp with a power of only 154w, like 2-3 incandescent lamps, gives illumination for 61 square meters! But thanks to the dimming option, you can adjust the lighting to any smaller lighting area.
  • If you definitely want to choose a lamp by size, then pay attention to the life hack of interior designers. In order to roughly imagine what size chandelier is needed in a room, you need to use the following formula: (room length, m + room width, m) x10 ~ chandelier diameter, cm. And here you can already select a lamp that approximates these dimensions and the optimal number of lamps according to the formula described above.

We offer you to do it easier, in each section of our website, there is an opportunity to choose a lamp based on the lighting area. Just set the dimensions of the area you need in the range and you just have to choose the lamp you like. For example, here is a selection of pendant chandeliers for lighting rooms with an area of 12 square meters. m up to 19 sq.m

We also bring to your attention a comparative table of the ratio of the luminous flux (lumens) to the power consumption of the lamp (W) for LED lamps, incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps. On the example of power consumption from 20 to 200 W for incandescent lamps. Lumen is a unit of measure for the luminous flux of a light source.

Articles on the theme.

  • How to create a cozy interior using curtains and drapery in dark colors

If you liked our article, then we invite you to our group

Hey! Hands got to a serious and big topic, I don’t know if it will even fit into one article. So, today we will talk about chandeliers. There is an opinion that chandeliers are the last century and now is the time of built-in ceiling lights. Of course this is all complete nonsense. Chandeliers are always relevant, they are timeless. Built-in light will solve the problem of uniform illumination and that's it. A good chandelier puts the finishing touch to the decor of the room.

In terms of its role in the interior, I compare a chandelier with jewelry in clothes. You can do without them, but the image will be boring and unfinished. Ridiculous decorations will indicate the lack of taste of the hostess. Obsolete in that she has no idea what fashion is. Awkward ones can emphasize figure flaws. The same is true with light. All lighting elements (including sconces, table lamps, floor lamps) are jewelry and bijouterie of your home. And their choice must be approached very carefully so as not to spoil the whole impression. They don't have to be expensive. The price is not the main thing. But they should decorate, and not nullify all efforts to restore beauty.

At the same time, the decorative role of lighting is still not the main one. After all, light is primarily a function. Therefore, the most important and first selection criterion, I will call a sufficient area of illumination, which is covered by the chandelier. And we will definitely talk about beauty, but a little later.

Mistake number 1: a small area of chandelier lighting

First, we need to at least approximately calculate the area of the room that we need to illuminate. And already based on this figure, navigate your choice.

An ordinary small ceiling chandelier with 3 horns with 40-60 watt lamps is designed for 6-9 square meters.

Why is it important? Because there is nothing more valuable and more important than health. Constantly being in a room with insufficient lighting is simply harmful. Okay, a bedroom, but such chandeliers are also chosen for a nursery.

There are specific rules to follow. More details can be found at the links Code of Rules "Natural and artificial lighting" and SanPiN 2.2.1 / 2.1.1.1278-03. Do not be intimidated by such huge amounts of information (for example, we just need to choose a chandelier for the bedroom), just keep in mind that the average norm for living quarters is 100-150 lux.

Always carefully study the technical specifications of the chandelier, they usually indicate the recommended lighting area. At least in most online stores this information is indicated. And if the technical part scares you, then just ask the managers about it, it's their job.

And you should always keep in mind that:

  1. Dark walls or ceilings will reflect light worse, which means that with the same chandelier in such a room it will be darker than with white ceilings and walls.
  2. High ceilings "eat" the light.
  3. Rough surfaces do not reflect light well and give micro-shadows - therefore, dim lighting is often obtained in wooden houses. I wrote about this in an article about.

Well, if you want to approach the issue even more seriously, then use the DIALux program.

This error almost always goes along with the next one.

Mistake number 2: the small size of the chandelier

Often found in the design of houses and cottages, rooms where there is a second light and generally high ceilings (above 3 meters). If the room is more than 16-20 squares (the average size of a typical living room with ceilings is 2.5 meters), then a regular-sized chandelier (which you are used to while living in an apartment) is likely to be small. What is suitable for an ordinary room, in a country house, is likely to be insufficient.

In general, scale and proportion are very important. There is even a formula by which it is recommended to calculate the size of the chandelier:

Diameter (cm) = Room length (m) + Room width (m) * 10 (cm)

For example, for a room measuring 3.8 m by 5.6 m (an ordinary small living room in a panel house), the recommended chandelier diameter is as follows: (3.8 m + 5.6 m) * 10 cm = 94 cm.

In theory, everything is just wonderful. But in practice, chandeliers of such diameters will cost, to put it mildly, not budget. Plus, the length of the suspension will be such that you, in your typical apartment, will touch it with your head. And among the ceiling with such a diameter, you simply will not find anything. I'm not kidding, right now I'm opening the website of one of the largest online stores with light, putting a filter on the ceiling chandeliers with a diameter of 90 cm, and voila, only 13 options, the price is from 38 to 549 thousand rubles. You probably won't like it. Therefore, the formulas are all very good, but often they are simply not applicable in life. For a standard room of 20-25 squares a chandelier with a diameter of 65-70 cm is suitable. vertically elongated shape. This is just the next common mistake - the height of the chandelier.

Mistake number 3: the wrong height of the chandelier

Here, it would seem, nothing complicated. Low ceilings - a flat chandelier, high - more voluminous. The right size will help adjust the height of the room, and the wrong size will visually lower the ceilings even lower. This is generally a problem, the proportions of the room immediately collapse. Rate it yourself.

The chandelier hangs too low. Probably there are standard 2.5 m in height, but it looks like 2.2-2.3 m. How to walk and not touch your head?

Laughter with laughter, but the head is actually an important landmark. We look at the doorways, their height is 2 meters. This is the very minimum that is necessary for free movement. So the height of your chandelier should be such that from floor to ceiling it is even more, not 2, but at least 2.2, but preferably 2.3 meters. Therefore, we adequately assess the height of our premises, and choose the light either ceiling or suspended. For hanging ones, we also additionally look at whether the height is adjustable, what is the length of the chain, whether something can be removed or unscrewed to adjust to the desired position. We are not shy to ask the manager to measure the height in the store with a ruler, it is better to measure and study it 100 times than to make sure later that the pendants rest against your crown and carry it back.

But with a lamp (chandelier) above the dining table, a slightly different story. This is local coverage, not general. Its role is to illuminate the table and what is on the table, and not the tops of those sitting, so it is located a little lower. But at the same time, it should not interfere with communication, block the view or blind the eyes. The optimal height of the chandelier above the table is around 90 cm. It can be a little higher, it can be 10-15 cm lower.

Mistake #4: outdated, ridiculous, unfashionable chandelier design

So I got to the most frequent and most interesting, but the most difficult to explain from the point of view of the decorator, mistake. Someone may argue that appearance is the tenth thing, because I myself said that the main thing in lighting is function. But if you neglect it, then all your efforts to restore the beauty of the house will come to naught.

I paid attention to the fact that light is the jewelry of the house. And it has its own fashion, which often has nothing to do with what is sold in most electrical stores. Everything is the same here, as well as furniture or clothes. There are, there are ugly chandeliers.

What chandeliers are in fashion now?

First, the terrible. But before that, I’ll explain that for me this is the most difficult part of the article, because I really have a bad idea of how to explain what is beautiful and what is not in words. Even if you show it, you still need to somehow explain why one is beautiful, and the second is scary. Let's say it's obvious to me, I'm just guided by my taste. If I like it, it's beautiful, no, it means ugly. Like it or not, but this is by and large a matter of taste and there is no truth in this matter and cannot be, by definition. And personally, when evaluating something, I look at the forms, proportions, in general, catches the eye with something or not, whether it attracts attention. I will try to highlight the main points that are worth paying attention to.

Now the main trend for chandeliers is metal. There are other topics - plastic, glass, rattan, fabric, but metal, as it was the main material, remains so. Brass and copper fittings are especially popular. This is the most fashionable squeak 🙂 But they are in the budget segment, as usual, during the day with fire. The choice is very poor. A couple of years ago, world design tops with their own lighting lines, such as Kelly Westler and Jonathan Adler, returned chrome and nickel to the clip. I even remember a slogan of some kind: silver is back!!! But with him, everything is a little more complicated, in a matte finish, almost everything is definitely yes (if you are already confused about the texture, then the design is usually good), and polished nickel and chrome are very careful. Now I will explain why.

If a chandelier of yellow and red metal (both matte and polished) due to its color almost immediately becomes fashionable. But when it comes to silver metal, this is not enough. This is where form comes into play. Because all the rubbish and consumer goods are 90% chrome-plated. I will now show some examples.

The most terrible chandeliers:

  • Polished chrome and floral swirls and swirls in general, waves in the style of plasterboard arches and other squiggles on the ceiling. This is, as it were, modern, but collective farm modern (the designer of the chandelier may not agree with me).

  • Polished chrome and halogen bulbs. Reminds me of ashtrays.

In general, I can’t even remember a chandelier with a good design and halogen bulbs right off the bat. Even expensive ones. It does not depend on the price. If you search, you can find something, but most inexpensive (and often expensive) ones are brilliant trash. I really can't find the words and arguments why it's ugly, but it's ugly.

  • Polished chrome and LED bulbs.

  • polished chrome (and polished gold metal) in combination with colored glass, flowers + halogen.

In general, these models, by the way, are quite in great demand. They seem to be on the control panel. I don’t know, I don’t know… maybe the managers themselves are posting rave reviews. In general, all this is the most ordinary cheap / collective farm, if you like (even if the chandelier itself is expensive) pseudo-glamour. Never, never, never hang something like this in your living room.

It is better to turn your attention to completely different models. The most relevant form now is futuristic and the trend towards minimalism continues. These are all sorts of sticks, tubes, balls, "hedgehogs", lines, cylinders, plates - any simple geometric shapes. This applies to chandeliers of any material: incl. from polished and painted metal, plastic, glass, fabric. And a fashionable chandelier may not have shades at all (but this is not an indispensable condition).

Once again I will repeat the signs of modern actual fashionable chandeliers, it is not at all necessary that all of them be present at the same time:

  • futuristic form;
  • geometric elements;
  • matte yellow, red metal (copper, brass and alloys);
  • there may be no shades (a tribute to minimalism that has been relevant in the last few years).

They look like this:

And one last important question. Should the chandelier strictly match the style of the room? If you go this route, you can't go wrong. It will be almost impossible to miss. But, in general, this is not necessary at all. Designer chandeliers of the 70s, industrial, fit well into classic interiors, it turns out such a modernized classic, and classic ones, on the contrary, look great in modern ones.

        Hello. Tell us, in your opinion, what kind of sconce can match this chandelier SL483.502.03 Ceiling chandelier ST-Luce Chrome/White E27 3*60W. I liked the Sconce ST Luce SL849.101.01 Edificio and the wall lamp ST Luce SL591.501.01. I can't choose anyway. Maybe you will advise something?

      2. Vladimir

        Good day! Advice on choosing a chandelier! Room 18m2, ceiling 2.5, modern style. I liked the Chandelier 250 * 750 for 20 lamps, will it not be too large in the width of the room, only 3.10. There is the same one for 12 lamps 175 * 600, what would you advise to take? The color is chrome, the balls are gray, are there matte gold balls in gold transparent? I can email photos if you write.

      3. Olga

        Hello. Nelly, could you also advise us on lighting? Thank you, everything is clear in the picture, how you start planning it at home, your head is spinning.

      4. a guest

        In your opinion, you showed the “ugly” chandeliers alone and they are all not particularly hanging, those that are attached to an ordinary apartment.
        The same ones that you showed as an example of Beauty, they are all hanging on high ceilings, and are shown in the interior.
        I want to note that a good designer will pick up a beautiful chandelier in budget options for low ceilings.

  2. Galina

    Can such chandeliers be considered relevant? On the one hand, this is not a halogen trash, but on the other hand, it’s hard to call it fashionable somehow ....

  3. Alexander

    Good material, informative

  4. Alyona

    I really liked the selection of chandeliers in the trend) A truly difficult choice is to choose a chandelier so that it does not stand out in the room, but highlights the room) Thanks for the article))

  5. ea1

    An interesting article, but I think that chandeliers are a thing of the past. This is a beautiful design element, but there is no light from it, plus a chandelier, even the most modern one, illuminates the center of the room, which is absolutely unacceptable in a room of more than 15 squares. The most sensible option is LED panels with zonal connection for a 4-5 key switch, allowing you to create an atmosphere and comfort. And the figure of 150-200 lumens is clearly underestimated, this is the equivalent of 130 W of an incandescent lamp, darkness in a word. I have about 1400 lumens in my room and it's great, though it's a matter of taste.

  6. anton

    good article, I will definitely use the tips.

  7. Nikitos

    I always thought that the chandelier does not really matter for the interior of the room, until the repair began to be done independently. There was a problem with the fact that the chandelier seemed “not harmoniously larger” in relation to the size of the room, it looked somehow miserable :(. As a result, I had to buy another one, a little smaller.

  8. Asya

    Hello, thanks for the article, I am also looking for two chandeliers - in the kitchen and in the hall. I would like to send you the models that I have looked at ... It is very difficult to choose

  9. Vladimir

    Yes, thanks for the informative and detailed material, I was not too lazy to read it to the end (although, perhaps, there will be a continuation - wait, sir. Chandeliers, perhaps, reflect the character and taste of the apartment owners best. And, probably, it is difficult to unequivocally assess and understand what will look perfect in my interior. But such a thing as a fashionable chandelier - I do not agree. After all, this is not a piece of clothing that has been worn and changed without problems, if you buy a chandelier - then for many years (until the next repair at least). But fashion or trend - they have the ability to change, and if futuristic minimalism is in fashion today, then it's not a fact that in five years it will look just as cool.And the classics are classics in Africa.

  10. Vadim

    I read your article completely, I found what I needed in only one sentence and without specifics. Can you explain a little in the comments, maybe insert a couple of photos at the expense of the second light? The question of choosing a light source is already in front of us in a country house - we are finishing the decoration. A wooden house made of profiled timber, a living room with a second light, and which chandelier to choose, we just don’t understand yet, even approximately ...

    Nelly, good afternoon! I enjoy reading your blog, it is written very concisely and there are many examples. Tell me which chandelier to hang on the attic floor? The bevel runs along the length of the entire room, the minimum height at the window is 2.2 m, the maximum on the opposite side is 3.5 m. The area of the room is 30 sqm. Thanks.

  12. Larisa

    Dear Nelly, good afternoon!

    Let me consult with you on this matter. We have a two-room large apartment. two children. the eldest 12 years old - in a separate room. And the three of us are in the living room - the little one is 1.5 g. The living room is 22 sq.m. with two windows (Not at the end!). The entrance to the living room is in the form of an arch from the corridor opposite the wall with two windows. And the room from the corridor is clearly visible. I really want to have a private area, so that at least a bed of 1.5 can be placed. How to do this seems to be clear, divide the room in half and that's it !!! But, fearfully, how will it be later, will we be able to in a small living room, will it be convenient. Please advise. Room 4 * 6, where 6 m is its length and there are 2 windows on this wall. Or just install a partition in the form of a rack? Thank you for the informative, and most importantly, visual materials !!! Sincerely, Larisa Ulan-Ude

    Nelly, good night! Your article turned out to be interesting, but it still caused conflicting feelings in me. Firstly, what you are positioning now as a “peep” of fashion will not suit everyone, and secondly, you won’t actually find it everywhere, which means it will cost a lot and not even on average. Thirdly, it seemed to me that you are more in favor of minimalism, but what about the good old classics? Can all classic chandeliers really be thrown into the trash?)) In addition, I agree with the comment above about the fact that the classics will never go out of fashion. But minimalism is not known how long it will last, especially futurism. I like the mix of styles the most. That's just such decisions need to be very well thought out so that the vinaigrette does not work out)). The theme of design is also close to me because I am finishing a long-term repair and just stopped at such interior items as chandeliers, curtains, and some of it still needs to be sorted out with furniture. Tell me, can I send you a photo and consult with you?

  14. Natalia Mikhailova

    Nelly, good afternoon. I stumbled across your posts by accident. You write well, "tasty" so. I would be happy to advise. Although my daughter-in-law is an amateur designer (with a construction education) she realizes her talents remarkably. But her approach, her proposals for my apartment is to destroy the existing interior to the ground and create a new one, regardless of material possibilities. It doesn't suit me.
    And the question is: how do you consider interiors with the possibility of preserving solid polished walls, veneered with mahogany, of the Soviet period. There are no closets or built-in wardrobes in the apartment.
    Your opinion is very interesting. Thank you.

  15. Galina

    To make the room look well lit, the light should fall on vertical surfaces, that is, walls. The human eye is so arranged that in a room it perceives bright only light reflected from the vertical. Therefore, there should be several different types of lamps in the room.

  16. Irina

    Hello Nelly. I read several of your articles and realized how many mistakes I can avoid. Thank you. For a week now I have been studying the issue of lighting. Our room is a L-shaped room 3 in 1: living room, dining room and kitchen (living room / dining room approx. 23.5 + appendix for the kitchen 4.5 sq. m.) How to choose the right lighting so that everything looks harmonious? Do you need a chandelier in the sofa area if it is above the table in the dining area or are there enough spotlights with a wall lamp or a floor lamp? Is it worth separating the kitchen-dining area with pendant lights, if it is already zoned by a bar counter and a box above it? Could you at least push me in the right direction. And then from the variety of conflicting articles, the head is already spinning. Thank you in advance.

  17. Irina

    Many thanks! Now the only thing left is to choose the right chandelier ... and not just one ... May the force be with me ...

  18. Olesya

    Help, please with a choice. In the living room, the ceilings are 2.20 and the room itself is 15 squares. I have been dreaming of a hanging chandelier for a long time, but will it organically fit into my hall? I'm afraid that the light will not properly spread around the room. Check out this chandelier. What do you think? https://lightmarket.ru/katalog/products/osveshenie/lustry/svetilnik-maytoni-arm257-06-g

  19. Sergei

    Olesya!
    Now they began to produce similar chandeliers with the possibility of fixing them rigidly without the top cup and chain, they will be about 350-550mm high, they look very cool. Or consider similar ceiling chandeliers.
    Or ask for help.

  20. Evgeniy

    Nelli Mikhailova, I read your article with pleasure. Especially smiled "The most terrible chandeliers" you will not believe, but it is these chandeliers that are sold most often. especially a chandelier with square glass shades (picture 5 from top to bottom) is generally a top seller)))

  21. Alekhine

    In addition to the first mistake, I would like to add that it is important to take into account the degree of darkness of the ceiling (s). Indeed, if their excessive darkening for the bedroom creates an atmosphere of intimacy and comfort, then for the living room such shades will be too dull.

  22. Olesya

    I was just recently choosing a chandelier and discovered the fact that I had never paid attention to the area of lighting before. And in the store, consultants never ask about the area of the room where the chandelier is chosen. While this is the most important thing - the chandelier should illuminate! Fortunately, in the online store where I purchased the chandelier, this indicator is in the first place in the description and I just could not help but pay attention to it!

  23. Natalya

    I have an opinion that design in any style can look interesting. At the same time, any style can be killed by the lack of taste and harmony. In my opinion, the concept of “good interior” is when you get a beautiful picture as a whole. And the chandelier is not the last role. It's like the finishing touch to the design. Thank you for the detailed description of the errors when choosing a chandelier.

  24. Olya

    Good afternoon Nelly! In parallel with the question of a chandelier, your opinion about spotlights is interesting (is it appropriate to use them to illuminate, for example, a sofa seating area) or is it better to use spotlights for 3-4 light bulbs? And you mentioned drywall niches. Is their use completely irrelevant?

  25. Andrey

    I was looking for good lamps for a long time, I came across good sites, I went there, the prices are low, I ordered, paid, the goods came quickly, here are the links: alpha-centre.ru and evrosvetpro.ru

  26. Katerina

    Good afternoon Nelly!
    I stumbled across your site by accident when I was remodeling. Your article about wallpaper helped, which talked about the location of the pattern in the entire wall. Before that, I wanted to do it in pieces, but I stopped in time)))
    I turn to you for advice.
    I looked at the chandelier in the room (room 6 * 3 with beige sand wallpaper, white ceiling, yellow wood door): one is light (but I'm afraid it will merge with the room), the other is darker. What's better?

    Another question:
    Tell me, are there any standards for the selection of sconces? Not included.
    What to focus on?

  27. Alyona

    Hello! I study the Internet about lighting and textiles in the apartment. I stumbled upon your site. Interesting. I take my hat off to people who boldly share their knowledge. I’m racking my brains over one question: the renovation is finished, the furniture is almost ready (the kitchen is standing, the hallway is standing, the hall is in order), now what comes first - the light or the curtains? What is the best place to start? First pick up chandeliers / lamps or curtains?

  28. Elena

    Good morning. What do you think about the octopus type chandelier? And further. According to some designers, 2.5 m ceilings are very low, so the ceiling chandelier should either be removed altogether and replaced with other multi-level lighting, or made almost invisible, which will visually raise the ceiling. So I looked for an LED flat white light, big enough to light up an 18 sqm room. What do you think?

  29. Agatha

    Thanks, very useful information. Like everyone else, I was looking for an idea for a chandelier and came across this blog. I wanted to thank.
    There is little adequate and lively information on the Internet. And there is a thank you.

    Hello, we moved to a new house for a year, almost everything has not been done in the house, but we are starting to settle down little by little, the chandeliers were hung a year ago, and the lamps are above the table now, and these lamps simply made the chandelier invisible, and I would not say that they are to me I like it, just like what they hang over, this is a bar that separates the kitchen and the living room, if it were lowered and made just a table, it is 60 cm wide, I would probably be happy, but my husband wanted to, I had to do this. And I have the question is how to choose the right lamps so that they do not focus on themselves a lot of attention

  31. Anna

    Hello! Thank you very much for the article. I suffer with the choice of 2 chandeliers in the bedroom in the house. The bedroom is elongated like a pencil case, one chandelier is above the bed, the other will be almost at the exit from the room and at the same time in front of the entrance to the dressing room (also in the bedroom). Do they have to be from the same series? My bedroom is designed in golden-brown-beige tones, I laid eyes on the Maytony Chester chandelier, but I just can’t forget it ((And it turns out to be a continuation of the primary colors, and not a “bright” decoration. And pick up the 2nd lamp in front of the dressing room for it I can’t ... And I don’t dare to buy everything in one series for some reason. I’m afraid it will be boring (

    Hello Nelly! I have a kitchen in a private house of 10 sq. m with a ceiling height of 270 cm. There are two sockets for lamps on the ceiling. Is it possible to hang a ceiling lamp or a chandelier in one, and a spot in the other. Ceiling lamps are planned in one color. Thank you very much for your comments on the site.
