A 6x4 garage is currently the best solution for storing a modern car. On the one hand, such a garage allows you to freely open the car doors and even equip a small workplace. On the other hand, a 6x4 garage remains a fairly economical solution and requires a relatively small amount of building materials for construction. That is, not crowded, and no frills.

Garage 6x4 - plan

DIY wooden garage 6x4

Perhaps the most affordable is a do-it-yourself wooden 6x4 garage. It does not require any specific tools and skills to assemble it, at least if you are going to build a 6x4 wood frame garage. A garage made of timber or logs is a separate conversation. I will immediately explain why.

Garage from bursa or rounded bren

Garage from bursa or logs:

  • Mounted on a fairly strong foundation;
  • It is assembled using technology that is not familiar to everyone;
  • Requires compliance with a long technological pause for the time of shrinkage.

In addition, timber and rounded logs are a rather expensive material. For example, in the Moscow region, it is more profitable to build a 6x4 frame garage. But there are regions in the Russian Federation where wood is the most affordable building material. There, on the contrary, it is a 6x4 wooden garage, no matter if it is a frame, made of timber or logs, simply does not have a competitive alternative. This is due to the availability of cheap local wood and the high cost of delivery of building materials due to the remote location.

A 6x4 frame wooden garage is the most affordable option for remote areas.

Frame wooden garage 6x4

A wooden 6x4 garage made using frame technology is available and can be built with your own hands. The foundation can be used pile or slab, assembling the frame and sheathing it with chipboard is a simple matter. If you attended labor lessons at school, then you probably know how to saw, drill, twist, use a tape measure and set the vertical and horizontal using a level and a plumb line.

Of course, if you decide to build a wood frame garage, you will have to deal with things like working with hydro and vapor barriers, laying the roof, etc. Here you will need to familiarize yourself with the features of the technology in advance and watch several training videos. But in principle - nothing complicated.

A 6x4 metal garage is more attractive than a wooden one, if only because it usually provides better conditions for car storage. What is good for a person is not always good for a car.

Garage 4x6 profile frame

Everyone knows that it is good to breathe in a wooden house. This is true, wooden walls are breathable, but the level of humidity also plays an important role here. In a wooden house, it is usually much higher than in a concrete high-rise building. It's good for residents. But for a car stored in a wooden garage, a high level of humidity, on the contrary, is harmful. A frame garage, if built according to technology, using hydro and vapor barriers, equipped with a ventilation system, will be dry. But all this, of course, is reflected in the price.

Cold frame metal garage (garage 4x6 profile frame)

But let's get back to the subject of discussion, this is a 6x4 metal garage. If it is assembled correctly, dampness can only get into it through open gates or through the floor or foundation. The path of dampness coming from the ground will easily block the waterproofing layer. But the main thing is that you can simply buy a 6x4 metal garage ready for installation, and simply assemble it as a constructor.

capital garage

There are times when you need a capital garage. For example, you need to ensure high burglary resistance garage. This may be relevant if the garage is located far from home and is not guarded, in disadvantaged areas, when storing especially valuable cars. Then you need to use concrete, bricks or building blocks. But I will talk about the construction of such garages next time.

If you want to build a garage for yourself quickly, inexpensively and without the use of heavy equipment, then a wooden garage with your own hands is your choice. The material has an affordable cost, has a lot of advantages and is able to serve quite a long service. But, for this you need to adhere to the construction technology. The tree must be treated with protective equipment.

What's next? You will learn the details from this article. We will tell you how you can independently make a wooden building as a garage. You will see a diagram, photos and videos that will help you with your work.

Choosing a construction method

There are two main technologies for building a wooden garage. They are significantly different from each other. What are these technologies?

  1. Timber garage construction.
  2. Construction of a frame structure from OSB boards or plywood.

What are the differences between these technologies? In short, round logs will cost you more, but a wooden garage will last longer. As for the frame version, it is faster and cheaper, but not as reliable. However, most often choose the second option. Frame structures perfectly cope with their task, and you can finish the building with any material. In terms of practicality, frame construction technology is more profitable. You can see the frame wooden garages in the photos that are attached.

Building a garage out of wood is a great option. The tree is 100% environmentally friendly, able to "breathe", has excellent thermal characteristics, and is also able to last for a long time. We are not talking about accessibility and ease of working with it. Since building a frame structure is a popular option, let's find out how you can build a wooden garage that will measure 6x4m.

Garage building 6×4

So, we will consider the technology of building a standard garage, the size of which will be 6 × 4 m, and the height is 3 m. The wooden gate for the garage will be made 2.8 × 2.5 m in size. As for the foundation, it will be monolithic, in the form reinforced slab. The frame of the building is made of bars 100 × 100 mm. Sheathing is made of OSB boards. Now let's take a closer look at all the stages of construction.

Preparing the base for the garage

When you have all the necessary drawings, a building plan and materials for its construction, you can start preparing for construction. First you need to know exactly where on the site your garage will be located. Then, it is important to pay special attention to this place:

  • remove all rubbish;
  • clear the space of bushes, trees and extraneous buildings;
  • remove the fertile layer of soil.

After all the steps are done, you can start working on the foundation for your wooden garage.

Foundation device

The advantage of wooden structures is that they are lightweight. So it turns out that for their construction it is not necessary to deepen the foundation much and make it especially stable. You need to make a monolithic slab foundation of shallow depth. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

It remains to wait until the base dries. This will take at least a month.

Note! To reduce the cost of construction and make construction much faster, you can use a columnar foundation. Since the design of the 6×4 garage is not heavy, it will do the job quite well.

Building a garage frame

We mentioned that the frame of the wooden garage will be made of bars, with a section of 100 × 100 mm. This is quite enough for the reliability of the building. What will the finished frame consist of?

Here are the main elements you need to know:

  • lower harness (crowns);
  • vertical racks;
  • struts to strengthen the frame;
  • top harness.

First of all, bars are laid on the foundation, acting as the lower trim.

Advice! Before laying them, it is worth waterproofing the foundation with roofing material or other material.

The lower trim is fixed to the concrete with anchors. Between themselves, the bars are also fastened. When the lower harness is ready, proceed to install vertical racks at the corners.

Fixation of vertical racks occurs by means of metal corners on both sides. And in order to give the structure additional rigidity and reliability, corner slopes are mounted, as shown in the figure.

Please note that the corner cuts are placed on the inside of the frame. This is done so that there is free space for sheathing our wooden garage with OSB boards.

When all the corner supports are installed, you can make the top trim. It is done in the same way as the one below. Everything is securely fastened with metal corners and jibs. When you have built the main structure, additional racks are installed around the perimeter for structural rigidity. After all, the size of the garage is 6 × 4 m, so you can’t do without them. The photo shows how you can attach additional supports.

Advice! If you want to give the structure even more rigidity, you can make transverse stiffeners. Then fixing the OSB will be even easier and more reliable.

We sheathe the OSB frame

Now it remains to sheathe the finished structure with OSB boards. This is the best option. From the outside, they are protected from wind and bad weather by a membrane and finishing material. To make the garage warm, you can use a heater. Then the walls will resemble a sandwich. After sheathing the garage along the perimeter with OSB boards, polystyrene foam, mineral wool or other insulation is placed in the space between the uprights. Everything is sheathed with a vapor barrier film, after which it is sewn up either with the same OSB boards, or with other finishing material.

How exactly the process of sheathing the frame with the help of OSB boards takes place, you can see from this video.

However, OSB is not the only plating option. For this purpose, you can use other materials, such as lining, wooden boards, siding, corrugated board, etc. No one limits you here, decide for yourself.

Roof device

As for the roof, it can be of two types: gable or shed. For its device, a rafter system and material for sheathing will be required. It all comes down to the fact that in the strapping that the corresponding grooves are made on top, to which the rafters will be mounted. Bars with a section of 40 × 100 mm can be used as rafters. In the photo you can see a flat version of the roof.

Next, the crate is made and the roofing material is laid. For a garage, shingles, corrugated board, metal tiles, slate or ondulin are most often used. What material to give preference to is a purely personal matter.

Summing up

We can say with confidence that your wooden garage is almost ready. It remains only to do the floor, which can be done in different ways. Since you have a monolithic slab foundation, it is better to protect the concrete. It can be painted or tiled. At the end, it remains to make a wooden gate, install them in their place and check the closing and opening. To prevent your garage from being broken into by intruders, take care of high-quality locks. From so quickly and easily, you can build a wooden garage on your site yourself. It will serve for a long time, fully performing all the tasks.

Before the construction of the garage building begins, important preparatory work is carried out. The article tells about the construction of a 6 by 4 garage, about the choice of construction method - as an extension or a separate building. The material below discusses the types of building blocks, their pros and cons. You will learn how the preparation for design is going on and the number of foam blocks is calculated.

Garage from foam blocks with an attic Source yandex.ru

How and what to build

Most owners of private plots seek to acquire a garage in the first place, which is not surprising, given the climatic conditions in a large part of the country. Garages are built in two ways: as an extension to a residential building and as a separate building; each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The garage adjacent to the house is more economical in construction: due to the common wall, the consumption of building material is reduced, it is easier to equip the garage extension with communications and alarms. You can get inside through the adjacent door without going outside (which is especially nice in rain or frost). The disadvantage of the attached structure is the noise and smell of gasoline penetrating into the living quarters; besides, the construction of an extension is not always convenient.

An alternative option, a detached garage, is a much more common solution. Its dimensions are determined by the dimensions of the iron friend; for most cars, a 6x4 garage will be an acceptable option. In a building of this size, there is room not only for a car, but also for tools (and, perhaps, for a small workshop).

There are many building materials on the construction market suitable for building a garage, including corrugated board and sand-lime brick. The options that are gaining popularity are block materials made from various raw materials. Their main advantage is the large size of the blocks, which makes it possible to speed up and simplify the laying process.

Types of block materials

Compared with bricks, large blocks have a number of undeniable advantages: they cost less, reduce construction costs (for example, the consumption of masonry mix) and reduce construction time. Most often, the following types of building blocks are used to build a garage 6 4:

cinder blocks

For more than 20 years, cinder block has been a popular material, practical and inexpensive. This kind of artificial stone, in which a variety of filler (slag) is bound by cement, is obtained by vibrocompression. As a filler, brick or concrete chips, broken glass, ash, expanded clay and other available materials can be used.

Source asm.ru

The constituent components determine the characteristics of cinder blocks, including the following parameters:

    The weight. Depends on voidness, which is measured as a percentage, from 0 to 50% (0% - full-bodied, the heaviest). In any case, the garage will need a capital foundation.

    Standard dimensions- 390x190x188 mm.

    The cinder block belongs to non-combustible materials and is not subject to shrinkage.

    Practicality in operation: The material is strong and durable.

    Flaws. These include a weak level of sound absorption, hygroscopicity (the block absorbs moisture) and high thermal conductivity. This forces the walls to be insulated, as well as to carry out external finishing (plastering or cladding).

Aerated concrete blocks

A significant volume of the aerated concrete block is occupied by closed and open voids filled with air, which gives the material the following properties:

    Light weight and density. Aerated concrete walls do not load the foundation like bricks and reduce not only the time of construction work, but also labor costs. The material is not suitable for the construction of multi-storey buildings, but in private construction it is used with success.

Source pp-budpostach.com.ua

    moisture resistance. The material has a certain hygroscopicity due to the fact that not all air cells in the block structure are isolated from each other; walls require protection from moisture and freezing (they must be insulated).

    energy saving. Thermal insulation performance allows the use of blocks in any climate.

    Operating parameters. Aerated concrete is accurate and easy to process, fire resistant and withstands freeze/thaw cycles well.

Foam blocks

Foam concrete, like aerated concrete, belongs to the group of cellular concrete, which determines its properties. Foam concrete blocks are widely used in private construction due to their advantages:

    Building Benefits. The small weight of the blocks allows you to do without building mechanisms; they do not shrink and are easy to process. Popular sizes are 400x200x200 and 500x300x200 mm.

Source chrome-effect.ru

    Relation to moisture. Features of the structure of foam concrete - closed air cells. This provides better moisture resistance compared to aerated concrete, but, at the same time, is the reason for the low vapor permeability of the walls. They cannot provide natural air circulation, which affects the indoor climate (which is more important for a residential building than a garage building).

    thermal insulation. The density of the material affects the thermal insulation properties - the higher it is, the lower the ability of the walls to retain heat. In general, foam blocks are a high-quality heat-insulating material. A wall with a thickness of 400 mm does not need to be insulated.

    Strength. Foam concrete is distinguished by the ability to increase brand strength during operation (twice in the first 10 years).

The disadvantages of foam blocks include the need for external decoration (plaster or ventilated facade), as well as restrictions on the choice of dowels for mounting on walls. In addition to these block materials, expanded clay blocks, wood concrete and gas silicate blocks are used in the construction of garage walls, combining budgetary cost with suitable technical characteristics.

Analysis and design of a garage structure

Pre-planning is an important stage in the construction of a garage, allowing you to analyze the consumption of building materials, and therefore adjust the budget, avoiding unnecessary expenses. When creating a project, pay attention to the following factors:

    Design choice. You may not need a standard garage, but the construction of an increased area for one car (6x4), or for two cars (7x6), or with a dedicated space for a home workshop. Often, a two-car garage is provided with an attic, which is very practical, especially in a small area.

Source zen.yandex.ru

    Soil features. The location of groundwater and the depth of freezing can affect the choice of foundation.

    Additional functions(garage equipment 6 by 4). The need for a viewing hole and a basement for home conservation is determined. It's also a good idea to pre-calculate the size of your tool shelving and determine if you need a dedicated work area with a workbench.

    Material selection. The building must meet many criteria: reliably protect the car, have a long service life and be inexpensive to build. The combination of these qualities has a foam block, which allows you to quickly build a practical and inexpensive garage.

    Building dimensions. The average garage building has a height of 2.4-3 m, a width of 3-4 m, a length of 4.5-6 m. Based on these parameters and the standard size of the selected block, the required amount of material is calculated.

    Calculation of the estimate. It is carried out taking into account the design features, the cost of connecting electricity and water supply, the volume of necessary materials, transport costs.

Video description

About the calculation of foam blocks in the following video:

    Design subtleties. The weak side of foam concrete is low vapor permeability, which can cause condensation. In order to maintain a comfortable level of humidity in the room, you should take care of the ventilation system (natural or forced).

Calculation of the number of foam blocks

For construction, it is convenient to take foam blocks with dimensions of 600 × 300 × 200 mm. When using this material, the wall thickness can be set to 200 or 300 mm by placing the block in different ways relative to the wall plane. The thickness of the garage walls is usually set equal to 200 mm. An approximate calculation of the number of blocks for a garage measuring 6x4x3 m (as well as a garage of any size) is performed according to the following scheme:

    Perimeter calculation garage building: (6 + 4) × 2 = 20 m.

    How many blocks will fit around the perimeter(in one row): 20 ÷ 0.6 = 33.3 (round up to 34 pieces).

    Determining the number of rows(in height). With a given height of 3 m and a selected block height of 300 mm, we get: 3÷0.3=10 rows.

    preliminary determination of the total blocks: 34x10=340 pieces.

Source kexholmstroy.ru

    Accounting for openings. In fact, less material will be required, because the garage will have gates and, possibly, doors and windows. Approximately 6 blocks are placed on an area of 1 square meter (if the thickness of the walls of your garage is set to 200 mm). Knowing the dimensions of all the openings, you determine the area of each (by multiplying the length and width), determine the sum of the areas and multiply it by 6. The result lies between 40 and 50 blocks. Subtract it from the total and get the total number of 290-300 blocks.

    Nuances. Usually, another 5% is added to the calculated amount (in this case, 15 pieces) for two reasons. Firstly, the thickness of the seam was not taken into account in the calculations; secondly, an allowance is made for transportation, in which damage to the edges of the blocks cannot be ruled out.

    Options. Many people believe that the optimal height of a 4x6 garage, suitable for most cars, is 2.4 m, which is: 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8 rows. This allows you to somewhat reduce construction costs.

Conclusion

Foam blocks are a frequent choice for building a garage, since they have an optimal set of characteristics for low-rise construction and allow you to build a structure that reliably protects the car. Although the construction technology is considered simple and budgetary, the design and construction of a complex building (with an attic, a utility block, utility lines) should be entrusted to a specialized organization.

We are sure that building a frame garage at the very beginning of the development of a suburban area is a very smart idea. Why do we think so?

  • It can store various building materials during the main volume of construction work, and then use this room for its intended purpose.
  • Another plus of this solution is that during the construction of the garage you will gain real practical experience, the garage itself is not a complex structure, but it provides for all types of frame construction work.
  • At cost, a frame garage is available to absolutely all developers.
  • Ease of installation allows you to correct possible errors made due to inexperience without significant problems.
  • In the garage during bad weather, you can do some work: prepare structural elements, paint them, etc.

What materials need to be prepared

For the foundation, you need to prepare cement, sand, gravel, building reinforcement. For the construction of a frame garage, we offer to buy an edged board 150 × 50 mm. For exterior cladding and the foundation for the roof, you need to purchase OSB boards inexpensively. You will need to buy or make your own window and door blocks. Of course, you need hardware and carpentry tools. As you can see, the list is not at all long, the cost of a garage compares favorably with brick options. You can insulate the walls if you wish, but we would not recommend it. This will require a lot of money, and you are unlikely to constantly heat the garage, taking into account today's energy prices. It turns out that you used your “hard money” inefficiently, and this is very disappointing for every developer.

If you plan to adapt a garage for temporary storage of lumber at the initial stage of building a suburban area, then you need to keep in mind that the standard length of lumber is six meters, take this parameter into account when determining the length of the garage. When installing lifting gates in a garage, it must be borne in mind that cheap DIY models are designed for an opening width of up to three meters and a height of up to 2.2 meters, adjust the size of the opening accordingly. If you make the gate wider, you will have to spend significantly more money on purchasing another gate kit.

Foundation Features

Most garages have tiled solid foundations. We consider this decision inappropriate, and here's why:

  • For the installation of a tiled foundation, you will have to perfectly level the site. It is not always possible to find a flat area for a garage on the site, which means that you have a large amount of earthwork to do. It's quite expensive and time consuming. In addition, heavy construction equipment and large trucks will operate on the site, which will certainly have a negative impact on its landscape.
  • During the construction of a tiled solid foundation, it is necessary to adhere to the ideal position in the horizontal plane. If you succeed at the initial stage, then no one can guarantee that during shrinkage it will not roll. The negative consequences of the roll are quite obvious.

In connection with these problems, we recommend making a reinforced shallow strip foundation for the garage. In order for it to have the necessary bearing characteristics, during the construction of a strip foundation, it is necessary to strictly adhere to building codes and regulations (SNiP). You need a sand cushion, you need reinforcement with construction reinforcement of a periodic profile Ø 12 millimeters, it is necessary to lay material on the bottom to filter groundwater, etc. One more thing to remember is that for a strip foundation at the location of the gate, you need to additionally lower the beam to a depth of at least 20 centimeters. Concrete the anchor bolts in the foundation tape, the lower trim will be attached to them.

Frame and wall construction

As always, it is necessary to lay a layer of waterproofing between the foundation and wooden structures, we recommend that you use an ordinary roofing material. It is much cheaper than modern waterproofing materials, and is in no way inferior in terms of efficiency. The lower strapping is carried out in the usual way; it is better to use dowels in the connection nodes. Along the perimeter, the strapping is attached to the strip foundation using anchor bolts that you previously concreted during the construction of the foundation.

Fix vertical racks with metal squares on self-tapping screws. During construction, observe the dimensions indicated on the drawings. Constantly check the vertical position of the supports, do the upper trim according to the level, use diagonal braces to strengthen the structure. Sheathe the walls with OSB boards, in the future you can additionally cover them with any finishing materials.

Start assembling wall frames from the side walls, then install the end wall, and deal with the wall above the gate last. This sequence will allow you to better observe the linear dimensions and check the vertical position of the supports.

The location of OSB sheets on the walls
