Do-it-yourself bookcase with flap doors. How to make a bookcase with your own hands

Self-made cabinet has undeniable advantages.

Firstly, the piece of furniture will correspond to the dimensions of the room and fit into the overall interior design.

Secondly, a do-it-yourself bookcase will be unique and much cheaper than buying in a store.

It is necessary to decide on the appearance and functionality of the piece of furniture, to decide where to install it. Bookcases are placed in the living room or in the office. If the apartment is small, it can be placed in the bedroom or in the hallway..

Advice. The wardrobe should be in harmony with the furnishings and books.

Before choosing a project and materials, drawing up a drawing, it is necessary to take into account a number of important aspects:

  • the bookcase should form a coherent whole with other pieces of furniture. If they are made, for example, of chipboard, the cabinet is made of a similar material;
  • the piece of furniture must organically fit into the surrounding environment. For example, it is not advisable to place a cabinet with doors that open outward near the front door;
  • the number and depth of shelves depends on the type of books. When the library consists of expensive, rare books, the shelves are made high and deep. If standard volumes prevail, small niches are made;
  • the color of the future product should be in harmony with the interior style.

Designs for books

To select the optimal design, take into account the dimensions of the room, the design concept and the availability of free space. There are horizontal and vertical cabinets. In shape, they can be angular, rectangular, shelving.

Important. A bulky wardrobe in a small living room will visually reduce its size.

Models of cabinets for storing books are open and closed.

Open consist of some shelves and do not have a very presentable appearance, since they do not have doors. This option is suitable for apartments with a small footage. An open storage system has several disadvantages:

  • the need to maintain a certain microclimate in the room;
  • humidity control;
  • regular cleaning.

The advantages of such a cabinet include easy access to books, simple assembly.

Closed cabinets are ideal designs. Books are reliably protected from dust, moisture and sunlight, since the cabinets are equipped with doors. To make the piece of furniture more attractive, the doors are made of high-strength glass.

In closed storage systems, you do not need to monitor the purity and humidity of the air.

There are the following types of cabinets:

  • corner... Suitable for small spaces. The item is located in a certain corner of the room, which helps to save space. The products are distinguished by good capacity, compactness and provide free access to books;
  • modular... Such designs allow you to combine elements. The result is cabinets of various configurations and heights. Modular products are universal - they are suitable for any premises: small and spacious;
  • corps... They are popular storage systems for magazines, folders, books and other items. The functionality of the cabinet can be chosen at your discretion: only shelves without doors; hinged, blind or glazed doors and shelves;
  • embedded bookcases consist of a sliding door system. All parts are fixed directly to the ceiling, floor and walls. Typical design: side panels without cover and bottom. The boundaries are the walls of the room.

Advice... Built-in wardrobes are best suited for roomy rooms.

Wood, MDF or Chipboard?

When choosing materials for self-construction of a bookcase, they take into account the financial side of the issue. For the wealthy, an excellent solution - wood different species: walnut, birch, oak, cherry. You can use veneer.

If you can't afford to buy expensive materials, there are many budget options. MDF- the optimal solution for the manufacture of an inexpensive and practical cabinet. Advantages of MDF:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • versatility;
  • a wide variety of colors and textures;
  • low price.

The front of the panels is treated with varnished veneer or melamine coated paper.

Chipboard have good performance characteristics, are easy to use, and are inexpensive. Particleboards are perfect for a bookcase - they look like wood.

Plastic is also used in the construction of modular structures. Its surface can be glossy or matte with any texture.

Advice... The back wall can be made from inexpensive materials.

In the photographs of bookcases, the back wall is not visible, since it is well hidden. Plywood or sheet is used for it. Chipboard... Such materials have advantages:

  • easy to process;
  • you can cut blanks at home;
  • cutting is carried out with an ordinary or electric jigsaw.

If the cabinet is intended for storing heavy books, the back wall must be secure. It is recommended to use chipboard instead of plywood. The material is easy to fix, it is heavy and can withstand any stress.

It is necessary to redistribute, from which the doors will be created. They can be made from glass, wood, or plastic. For the manufacture of glass doors, high strength tempered glass is used.

In order for the overall concept of the cabinet to look harmonious, differ in the original design, you will need fittings:

  • loops;
  • pens;
  • decorative overlays to close the ends.

The range of materials used will form the final cost of the product.

Scheme and drawing

When the question of the model and the place of installation of the piece of furniture, the materials used is resolved, they begin to draw up the drawing.

The cabinet is "divided" into several component parts and every detail is drawn. To facilitate the task, there are computer programs: Basis-furniture maker, Auto Cad.

Important. The diagram should reflect all the functional components of the product: the location of corner racks, sockets, etc.

For example, plinth takes 5 cm away from the cabinet and does not allow to push it close to the wall. In this case, the skirting board is removed. Be sure to check with a level whether the floor is horizontal. If this fact is not taken into account, the shelves will be located at an angle to the plane. If there is curvature, the surface of the room is leveled.

In order for the product to be ergonomic, important parameters are determined when creating a drawing:

  • the number of shelves for books and the distance between them;
  • the width and height of the cabinet;
  • maximum load.

Shallowest depth bookshelves for standard cabinets - 20 cm.For deep ones - 30 cm. Thickness not less than 2.5 cm with a length of 1 meter. The recommended thickness of the material is 2-3 cm. The distance from the plinth is 3 cm.

Instruments

To make a bookcase yourself, you need a whole set of tools and other equipment:

  • Sander;
  • milling machine;
  • sandpaper;
  • screwdriver;
  • hacksaw and drill;
  • construction stapler;
  • fastening elements;
  • pencil and tape measure;
  • hammer;
  • nails with washers.

You will also need plywood sheets for the manufacture of racks, back wall and support covers, a wooden beam for the legs. You need to prepare all materials for finishing:

  • curbs;
  • slats;
  • glass (clear or frosted).

If the cutting of the parts will be done by hand, you will need an electric jigsaw.

How to do it at home?

Blanks

According to the available drawings, the main parts for the cabinet are cut.

If there is no proper experience, it is better to order a cut of the material from specialists... For example, sawing chipboard with a jigsaw for a very long time and the work will not look neat.

During the preparation of parts, they are checked against all drawings and diagrams.

After cutting, the workpieces are ground. To give the ends a beautiful embossed appearance, milling is performed. Milling rules:

  • securely fix and prepare the router;
  • do not allow the workpiece to be deflected when the milling cutter feeds;
  • movements should be careful and smooth;
  • slats are processed only after setting the desired size.

Advice... If irregularities appear after processing, they are cleaned with sandpaper.

Assembly

Assemble the cabinet on a flat surface to avoid distortions and curvatures in the structure. Sequence of work:

  1. Attach the side walls to the top, using a corner to check the correct installation of the elements.
  2. Holes are made for fasteners. The drill diameter should be smaller than the fasteners used.
  3. Details are pulled together using confirmations. They come with a hex wrench to facilitate the screed process.

Having connected the top, they go to the bottom. A corner is used to adjust the corner joints.

Advice. It is better to install shelves without a back wall.

The shelves in the bookcase are subject to stress, therefore making them removable is not desirable... The shelves are attached with confirmations in 3-4 places on one side of the side wall. This ensures the stability and reliability of the entire structure.

At the final stage, the back wall is mounted. To fix it, take a sheet cut from chipboard or plywood. For fastening, a construction stapler or nails, self-tapping screws are used. Doors are hung on the hinges, if they are provided for by the project.

Conclusion

Thus, the bookcase can be made with your own hands. It is so easy to realize any design idea, to demonstrate good taste. The best materials for creating a cabinet are wood and MDF. To make the product beautiful, functional and durable, special attention is paid to the accuracy of measurements, the development of a drawing and reliable fixation of structural elements.

In contact with

Books are not only a source of knowledge that teaches life, relationships and communication culture. For people keen on literature, a book is an object of reverent worship, friend and comrade.

And despite the fact that the modern world offers a lot of opportunities to have many books in electronic form, which is much more convenient and affordable than the paper version, there should still be a library in every home. Let it be small, but filled with classical and modern literature in a traditional, familiar form.

Of course, we know that it is best to store books in cabinets specially designed for this purpose. But if you are a young family, recently bought a house and have not yet acquired the necessary furniture, then the bookcase will probably be in the last place on the shopping list. However, there is a great way out - to make a wardrobe with your own hands.

Types of bookcases in the interior, their advantages

Now designers offer many interior solutions: unusual bookshelves. There are many options, and often among them there are simply unimaginable, but surprisingly simple to perform. Let's look at the simplest, but at the same time beautiful and interesting version of the bookcase, which is easy to make yourself.

Traditionally, bookcases come in two flavors: open and closed.

  1. Closed cabinet It is more convenient for storing paper books, since it does not allow sunlight, moisture and dust to penetrate inside. The disadvantage of books is that they absorb dust and moisture very strongly, deteriorate from this, which subsequently negatively affects human health.On the other hand, a bookcase, closed with solid doors, has a rather bulky appearance, and does not look very beautiful in a small room ... This can be avoided if the doors are made of glass. Shaded glass protects books from the harmful effects of sunlight.
  2. Open bookcases they look light and airy, they fit well into a room with a small footage. Usually they are narrower than closed cabinets and are intended, in addition to storing books, for things and objects that play a role in interior decoration.If you opt for an open bookcase, then you will need to constantly maintain a certain climate in the apartment: humidity , temperature, cleanliness level. But on the other hand, such a cabinet gives easy access to books, which is very important if you like to read. Plus, open cabinets are very easy to assemble and easy to model as your imagination dictates.

Bookcases are also made in horizontal and vertical design, and in shape - rectangular, corner or shelving. Before choosing the closet that suits you, take into account factors such as the free space in the room, its size and interior style.

The most popular and widespread cabinets for storing books and other things are cabinet ones. Such cabinets are available in a wide range of models, and you can easily choose how they will look according to your preferences: without doors or with doors of any kind - swing, sliding, accordion, glass or deaf.

The modular design of the bookcase allows various combinations of elements. Thus, you can get a cabinet of any configuration, width and height. This type of bookcase is versatile, as the variations can be easily adjusted to fit any room - both large and small.

The built-in bookcase is a kind of sliding door system. All parts of such a cabinet are attached to the walls, ceiling and floor. There are a lot of design options, but the most common one is side partitions without a cover and bottom and walls of the room as boundaries.

If you have a small apartment, and there are a lot of books, then a corner cabinet will be the best solution. This design is very spacious, compact and fits well into any type of interior.

We make the cabinet ourselves: the necessary materials and tools

There are a lot of materials used for the manufacture of furniture now, and it is they that will form the value of your cabinet. Models of an exclusive nature are made from expensive materials, for example, natural wood, solid wood or veneer. But for more affordable cabinets, materials such as chipboard or MDF are used, with a laminate, polymer or melamine coating. MDF is a more modern material, it is characterized by increased strength and environmental friendliness. It is produced in the form of slabs by dry pressing of small chips under high pressure and temperature.

So, to make a cabinet with your own hands, you will need:

  • Milling machine;
  • Sander;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Hacksaw, drill and screwdriver;
  • Hammer;
  • Nails and screws with washers;
  • Roulette and pencil;
  • Joiner's glue;
  • Varnish and stain;
  • Shelf blanks made of furniture board;
  • Plywood sheets for uprights, backsplashes and backsplash;
  • Natural wood beams for legs.

What to consider when drawing up a cabinet drawing

  1. First of all, decide on the model of the cabinet and the place in which it will stand. Divide the drawing of the cabinet into several component parts, carefully tracing every detail. Such specialized computer programs as "Basis-furniture maker" or "AutoCad" will be good helpers in this matter for you. When creating drawings, take into account any little things, even the plinth on the floor of the room, which will easily eat five centimeters from the closet, and, moreover, will not allow it to be moved to the wall. In this case, the bevel of the vertical edges from the side of the plinth will help. You can also completely remove the skirting board.
  2. Now determine the exact dimensions of the cabinet. This means not only the width and height, but also the number of shelves, as well as the distance between them.... The smallest depth of the shelf for books is 20 cm, for deeper shelves - 30 cm. The thickness of the shelf should be at least 2.5 cm with a length of 1 m, this will help to avoid sagging.
  3. Be sure to decide on the color of the furniture in advance. There will be no problems with this, since modern industry offers a large selection of colors and shades.

Cooking cabinet details

After all the drawings are prepared, start preparing the cabinet parts. Sawing parts is a rather difficult job, so it is better to entrust it to specialists. A chipboard sawing machine is quite expensive, and it makes no sense to buy it for the sake of making one piece of furniture. You can use a jigsaw, but the work will be, firstly, very long, and, secondly, not of sufficient quality. It is best to order a chipboard cut at the place of purchase.

Let's take a standard open-type rectangular cabinet as a basis for production. For it we will use oak veneered chipboard and oak itself. You can glue the rectangular ends of the panels with veneer, or prepare oak strips in advance, which will be glued to the ends, and rounded towards the end of the work.

  1. Take a width of 30 cm and a length of 3 m, and cut them into pieces with a length of 1.6 m.After that, you need to adjust to the size of the rail. Here you will need a board alignment template, a sawmill, and a rail. The dimensions of the template are as follows: length 1500 mm, thickness - 20 mm, width - 250 mm. Place the template under the board when cutting.
  2. Prepare the required number of rails. They will need to be passed through the planer, but be careful: both sides should be parallel to each other and absolutely level. The slats should also be sanded so that the surface is perfectly smooth.
  3. The slats are completely ready, and now they need to be attached to the chipboard with glue. You will need a clamp at this point. So that when the clamp is clamped, the workpiece does not squeeze through, place a piece of plywood of a suitable thickness under it. When glue comes out of the seams of the parts during clamping, wipe it thoroughly with a rag, or remove with a chisel after drying. The slats should be joined at a 45 degree angle.

Milling the ends and back panel for the cabinet

Milling the ends is not a difficult and time-consuming job, but it still requires accuracy and thoroughness. It is necessary to choose the right cutters for the relief and clearly set the desired overhang; when feeding the workpiece into the milling cutter, it is necessary to observe the smoothness of the movements and not allow deviations to the sides.

Before starting work, check the operation of the cutter on excess trim. After the desired size is set, start processing the slats.

When milling is complete, check the contact of the workpiece with the work piece. If there are gaps and crotches between them, remove them with a 150 grit sandpaper. Such differences will be noticeable after you open the finished cabinet with varnish, so you need to fix them immediately.

The back wall of the cabinet is an inconspicuous side, so it does not require any special processing and finishing. But exactly how well you install it depends on the overall reliability of the entire structure. The back wall is the connector for the entire cabinet, on which all other parts are attached.

Most often, sheets or pieces of plywood are used for the back wall of furniture. Such material is very easy to process, and its installation will not take much time. Using a sawing machine or jigsaw, cut off the pieces of the desired size, and remove the chamfer from the sawn cut with sandpaper.

If you need a more reliable, sturdy back wall with high wear resistance, make it from chipboard, which is much heavier in weight. But remember that such material is much harder to process, and requires both special fasteners and certain fastening methods.

Let's start assembling the cabinet

Now you have all the necessary parts ready, and you can start directly assembling your bookstore. It must be produced on the most flat surface in order to avoid distortions.

Attach the side walls to the top, for this use a corner to prevent uneven corners at the joints. Drill holes for fasteners; use a drill with a diameter smaller than the connecting piece. Now pull the parts together with the fasteners. Confirmation is a very good option, it is easy to use and practical. When you buy it, you also get an Allen key, which will facilitate the clamping moment.

After you have secured the top of the cabinet, move on to the bottom, while remembering to use the corner when adjusting the joints. Having connected all these parts, start assembling the shelves. Take your time to fix the back wall, without it, the installation of the shelves will be much easier and more convenient. Since the shelves of the bookcase are constantly exposed to stress, it is not worth making them removable. It is easier to fix them with the same confirmation, and it is best to make 3-4 fasteners for each of the side walls. Thus, not only the shelves, but the whole will receive additional stability and reliability.

So, we have come to the final stage - the installation of the back wall. In the event that you opted for chipboard, a construction stapler, screws or nails will serve as fasteners.

DIY bookcase assembly video

Well, now you have an original bookcase in your apartment that you assembled yourself. As you can see, this work is not only simple, but also does not require large financial costs. Now in your interior there is an exclusive piece of furniture that cost you much cheaper than store counterparts. And if you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments, we will be happy to answer them.

Bookcases are usually installed in the living room, but if space is available, they can be located in the bedroom or hallway. This piece of furniture can have different sizes and characteristics, and also has different capacities. Many people love to read books, so a cabinet with the right dimensions and other properties is required to optimally store their library. If you cannot find the optimal model, then it is possible to independently make a bookcase with your own hands from different materials.

Before the direct work related to the formation of a bookcase for books with your own hands, you need to determine which model will be created. The designs should be well suited to the style of the room, its color scheme and other parameters of the room.

Bookcase models can be:

  • open - they consist of open shelves, so there are no doors. Creating such a cabinet is a simple job that does not require buying a lot of expensive materials. The disadvantages include not too presentable appearance;
  • closed - such models are considered the most optimal for structures intended for storing books. This is due to the fact that they are equipped with doors, so books are reliably protected from direct sunlight, dust or possible moisture ingress. For a more attractive appearance of such a cabinet, glass doors are used, but for this, glass with high strength is used.

By design, do-it-yourself bookcases can be:

  • vertical;
  • horizontal.

To select the optimal design, it is taken into account what dimensions the room itself, in which it is planned to install the piece of furniture, has. Additionally, one must remember about the style of the interior and the availability of free space in the room, since a too bulky structure in a small living room will visually reduce its size and negatively affect its attractiveness.

Additionally, the types of cabinets are distinguished:

  • corpus - chosen by many people most often for the convenient location of a large number of books, newspapers or magazines, and it is also allowed to store many other small items. The filling of such a cabinet is chosen by direct users, so it can be equipped with swing or sliding doors, and it can also be made without facades;
  • modular - it consists of a large number of different modules, and they can be combined and rearranged, which allows you to always effectively change the appearance of the cabinet. Due to this unusual option, you can embody original design ideas for each room and style. If the room where the cabinet is planned to be installed is small, then several modules are removed to save space;
  • built-in - usually such a structure is formed by connecting a different number of sliding doors. A feature of this option is that all walls are fixed directly to the walls of the room, as well as to the ceiling and floor;
  • corner - chosen for small spaces. Takes up a certain corner of the room, so significant space is saved. It is well suited for different interiors, is compact in size, excellent capacity and provides free access to books.

If a built-in bookcase is chosen, then it is advisable to form it in a certain niche of a particular room.

Tools and materials

Before directly creating a structure, you should decide what materials will be used for this. It is allowed to use different materials, but wooden cabinets are considered the most suitable for different rooms. For this, different types of wood can be used, for example, cherry or oak, birch or walnut.

You can buy solid wood or veneer, any option is of high quality and beautiful appearance.

If it is not possible to spend a lot of money on the purchase of such an expensive material, then MDF or chipboard is chosen, as well as other lumber, on top of which there is a high-quality polymer coating. MDF is considered an ideal choice for obtaining an inexpensive and acceptable quality cabinet. It is produced by dry pressing and is highly durable and environmentally friendly.

Additionally, you need to decide what the doors will be made of. They can also be created from wood, but it is allowed to use plastic or glass for this. Glass doors are considered the most interesting and unusual, therefore they are chosen quite often, but you must make sure that high strength tempered glass is used.

Of the tools you will need:

  • screwdriver;
  • Grinder;
  • sandpaper;
  • a machine designed for high-quality milling;
  • drill and hacksaw;
  • tape measure with a pencil;
  • joiner's glue and varnish;
  • fasteners;
  • blanks intended for the formation of shelves and created from high-quality furniture board;
  • plywood used for the back wall and cover;
  • material for legs, and small wooden elements made of oak are considered optimal.

The construction made of high-quality wood will last for many years and will always delight with its unusual appearance, and such models are also suitable for any interior.

MDF boards are ideal for a bookcase

Before the direct process of creating a structure, the preparatory stages are performed:

  • a specific model is selected, which will be created by hand;
  • the entire cabinet is visually broken down into separate components, after which a drawing is formed for each part;
  • to simplify the process of drawing and diagram formation, you can use modern and easy-to-use computer programs;
  • it is decided what dimensions the cabinet will have, and the main parameters are: width, height and distance between the shelves;
  • according to the drawings, sawing of parts that are the main elements to obtain a full-fledged and high-quality cabinet is carried out;
  • if chipboard is used, then it is advisable to order a cut from specialists, since if you do not use specialized equipment, then you get uneven cuts, chips and other disadvantages;
  • if it is necessary to make rectangular ends of the panels, then for this they are easily and quickly pasted over with veneer.

During the preparation of parts, it is necessary to constantly check with the existing drawings and diagrams, since there is a high probability of creating low-quality elements that cannot be used in the future.

End milling

This procedure does not differ in particular duration and complexity, but it will have to pay a lot of attention, since without this process, a not very attractive result may be obtained. For perfect work, the following rules are taken into account:

  • the cutters are correctly selected, designed to form a beautiful and optimal relief;
  • a departure with the necessary parameters is clearly and competently exposed;
  • high-quality and modern milling equipment is used.

The main features of milling include:

  • the router is securely fixed and prepared;
  • during the supply of the workpiece to it, it is not allowed for it to deviate or move to the sides, as this guarantees a poor work result;
  • when performing the process, it is necessary to ensure that all movements are smooth and careful;
  • before work, it is recommended to make sure that the equipment is working, for which milling is performed on a small unnecessary element;
  • processing of slats should be carried out only after setting the optimal size;
  • after work, the place where the workpiece touched the working part of the tool is checked;
  • if there are small irregularities, they are carefully cleaned with sandpaper, since if you do not complete this process, then after coating the elements with varnish, irregularities will be clearly visible.

Thus, it is easy to perform milling if you follow the basic steps and rules, as well as use high-quality and modern equipment.

Back wall

In the photo of different bookcases, it is almost impossible to see the back wall, so it is usually well hidden. This makes it possible to use inexpensive and easy-to-process materials to create it. Usually a standard chipboard sheet is used for this.

Although the back wall cannot spoil the appearance of the cabinet, the reliability of the entire interior item depends on the correct fixation, since it acts as a connecting element.

For the formation of the back wall, a sheet of chipboard or plywood is most often used. These materials are considered easy to process, so it will not be difficult to cut out the necessary parts from them. Cutting can be done with an electric or manual jigsaw, and a special sawing machine is often used. Before cutting, it is necessary to apply the markings on the sheet so that a perfectly flat back wall is obtained, having the required dimensions. The chamfer is removed with sandpaper.

If you want to get a sufficiently reliable back wall, it is recommended to use chipboard instead of plywood. This material has more weight, and it is also quite easy to attach. It can withstand different loads, so it is considered the ideal choice for a cabinet that will host a lot of heavy books.

Particleboard is most often used for the back wall of a bookcase.

Assembling the cabinet

How to make a bookcase with your own hands? After performing numerous preliminary works, the direct assembly of this structure begins. This process is divided into successive stages:

  • initially, a place is selected where the work will be performed, and it should be represented by a flat surface, since in the presence of distortions, various irregularities may appear in the final structure;
  • side walls are attached to the upper part, and a corner is used to check the evenness of the arrangement of the elements, and only after measurement is the fixation performed, and this approach will prevent unevenness at the joints;
  • holes are drilled for fasteners, for which a drill is used, and its diameter should be slightly less than the selected fastener;
  • the parts are reliably and firmly pulled together with fasteners, and the best choice for this process is a confirmat screwing with a hexagon;
  • after fixing the upper structural element, fixing the lower part begins, and before that, you also need to pay a lot of attention to high-quality measurements with the help of a corner;
  • then the back wall is attached, for which a pre-cut sheet of plywood or chipboard is used, and for this you can use nails or even a construction stapler;
  • the fastening of the shelves begins, and a really significant load will affect them due to the use of a large number of books, so it is not advisable to make them removable;
  • it is advisable to fix the shelves with a confirmation, ensuring the reliability and durability of the elements;
  • doors are installed using hinges if the created structure is formed with facades.

Thus, the bookcase can be done by hand. In this case, the ideas of future users are embodied, and a really interesting design is obtained. The best materials for this are wood or MDF. During the process, a lot of attention is paid to the creation of the drawing, the selection of quality material, correct measurements and reliable fixation.

Surely, every book lover sooner or later faces the problem of keeping his home library. Of course, the easiest way out is to buy a ready-made cabinet, since today furniture stores offer a wide range of models of book shelves. You can also contact companies that manufacture custom-made bookcases. However, we suggest you not only save a decent amount of money, but also take part in a very exciting process - especially since this piece of furniture will be created by your own hands.

Below you will find detailed instructions for assembling just such a bookcase, thanks to which you can easily and quickly assemble a "home" for your book collection.

Of course, there are more complex designs of bookcases, for example with doors and drawers. We're going to talk today about the classic version of the home library with open shelves that can be placed in any room.

The optimal depth for a home library is 400 mm. Bookcase dimensions: 2000 * 800 * 400 mm (height * width * depth). Many books or magazines fit comfortably at a given depth, so don't worry about its capacity.

Material:

in this article, we will consider the assembly of a cabinet from chipboard material. The back wall will be made of fiberboard. These are very affordable materials, and there is a wide range of colors on the market, from woods to bright monochromatic decors.

What tool do you need during the assembly process?

For self-assembly, we need the following tool:

  • screwdriver with a bat for confirmation;
  • confirmation drill;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • bit for self-tapping screws.

We also need fasteners:

  • confirmates
  • self-tapping screws
  • furniture corners
  • heel pads

The bookcase, the assembly of which is described in this article, turned out to be quite roomy thanks to a well-thought-out design in advance.

All the necessary details can be made, guided by the drawings, which will be attached at the end of this manual.

It is better to entrust sawing and facing the ends of parts with an edge to professionals and order all this at once in a furniture shop. After all, it is quite difficult to do it at home. In principle, there is nothing complicated, but this only applies to the paper melamine edge. can also be glued at home. But we would still recommend that you do the pasting with a plastic edge on a professional machine.

The same is about the chipboard. It can, of course, be cut with a jigsaw. But be prepared for the fact that a large number of chips will appear on the parts, which will greatly spoil the appearance of the cabinet.

This bookcase project uses 3mm white fiberboard as the back wall.

Unfortunately, we could not save a photo of the finished cabinet with the assembly, but we will provide you with the drawings, according to which you can make a bookcase with your own hands.

Build process

At the very beginning, we fasten the prepared side uprights together. To do this, you first need to drill holes for confirmations in the side parts.

Initially, we need to assemble the main frame of the bookcase, i.e. connect the main parts together. This is done with the help of confirmations. The process of drilling holes for confirms is described in more detail.

  1. Insert the confirmat into the resulting hole and screw the hardware with a screwdriver with a bit for confirmations. Repeat this procedure with the second side panel, and do the same with the lower shelf. That is, you need to assemble the bookcase into a single whole. As a result, you should have the main frame of the future cabinet. When assembling, it is very important to initially withstand all dimensions and joints so that all ends are connected flush.
  2. After our frame is assembled, it needs to be aligned diagonally. It is important that we have an even rectangle with the same diagonals.
  3. You can now attach the back wall. Take a few self-tapping screws, a screwdriver with a suitable bit and fasten the back wall to the ends of the sides, top and bottom shelf. Fasten the self-tapping screws in 10 cm increments.

  4. Next, you can proceed to fastening the shelves. In order to create additional rigidity of the structure, we recommend attaching the shelves to the side parts using confirmations.
  5. Of course, the side of the cabinet will suffer from this, but the hats of the hardware can be closed with special plugs in the color of the chipboard. Starting from the top, mark 380 mm from the top of the side piece and make two parallel marks with a pencil.
  6. At the same time, step back from the edge by 2 cm. Drill through holes with a drill, insert confirmations into them and tighten with a screwdriver. Repeat this procedure for all internal shelves.
  7. A bookcase, the scheme of which assumes the presence of a drawer side between the second and third shelves, will have a little more rigidity than if these shelves were without it. Insert it between these shelves, and attach with self-tapping screws.

  8. The assembly of the bookcase continues. Now we are going to attach decorative overlays to the front of the cabinet. Let's start with the vertical ones. It is best to do this with furniture corners, fasten them with self-tapping screws to each shelf and top part from the inside.

  9. The design of the bookcase also assumes the presence of horizontal top and bottom decorative overlays. Fasten them in the same way as vertical ones.

That's all!

In fact, this is a very exciting and interesting process. Over time, you will be able to make other pieces of furniture for your interior. For example, make a large shelving for books or tools. The main thing is that at the same time you save almost 100% of the cost of materials.

Bookcase drawing

A bookcase is an indispensable piece of furniture. Books create coziness in a special way and give a home a warm atmosphere. Most people prefer paper counterparts to e-books, and rightly so. It is always pleasant to take a volume of poems of your favorite poet from the shelf, and feel its heaviness in your hands, listen to the rustle of pages. Therefore, it is very important to keep the books in order. The bookcase will become a reliable assistant in this matter.

The advantages of making a cabinet with your own hands

Nowadays there is no such piece of furniture that cannot be bought, however, when it comes to buying, it turns out that something is wrong: the dimensions of the furniture do not fit, the model does not fit into the interior, or you simply don’t like a single cabinet. so much that you want to buy it right there. In this case, you can make a bookcase yourself, saving a rather large amount. In addition, there are a number of advantages for a hand-made product:

  • you will make the design strictly according to the dimensions that you need;
  • the product will fit perfectly into the interior;
  • your creation will be unique, because it will be made by hand and taking into account all the nuances regarding the design of your home;
  • handmade furniture lasts longer than factory furniture, because the owner does not skimp on the quality of the material and fittings.

IMPORTANT! First of all, you need to think about which model of the bookcase you want, think over its location and size, and only then start work.

There are 2 types of this furniture: open and closed. The closed bookcase has doors that protect books from dust and sun. There are no such doors in the open model.

Varieties of bookcases

To make a wardrobe that is most suitable in size and style, you need to understand the types of such furniture. It is categorized by assembly type and usage method.

Table: types of bookcases

Build type Use cases
Case The design can be with or without doors, contain a different number of shelves, doors can be hinged, sliding, accordion. Suitable for storing any printed matter.
Modular Convenient in that it is easy to assemble and disassemble, you can equip with additional shelves, change the shape and height.
Built in The design can be anything you like. In such cabinets, it is better to install sliding doors, the parts of which are attached to the sides and top.
Angular A win-win for small spaces.

Drawing for the manufacture of the cabinet

Having decided to make a bookcase yourself, you need to prepare a drawing. First, decide what shape the model will have, where it will be located, what material it will be made of. Remember that it is best to place your bookcase in your study, living room, or other spacious area.

IMPORTANT! When drawing up a drawing, it is necessary to take into account not only the height and width of the product, but also the number of book blocks. All this should be reflected in the picture.

Before drawing up a drawing, check how horizontal the floor is. It's easy to do this with a level. If we omit this moment, the finished product may be made with errors, and the shelves will become at an angle to the surface. If, nevertheless, you see that the floor is slightly sloped, decide which is easier to do: level the surface, or design the cabinet so that it will subsequently stand firmly on the floor. All these nuances should be displayed in the drawing.

In order to get the most accurate drawing, you need to consider the depth of the bookshelf. A standard book is 20 cm wide, larger volumes - 30 cm, this must be displayed in the drawing. The thickness of the bookshelf should be at least 2 cm. If the apartment has a baseboard, then the indent from it should be a little more than 3 cm. It is also worth mentioning the presence of sockets and the possibility of lighting the cabinet.

Cabinet making process

A drawing or diagram is an integral part of the manufacturing process. Therefore, drawing up a drawing must be approached with all responsibility. Next, you need to select a material, and check the availability of all tools.

When making a cabinet, you will need to mill the ends. This process is not time consuming, but it should take time:

  1. You need to choose the right routers to help you create the perfect relief.
  2. Departure is set as clearly as possible.
  3. The milling equipment must be modern and of high quality.

There are milling features that must be taken into account:

  1. The router must be securely fastened.
  2. The workpiece must not bend to the sides during milling.
  3. You cannot rush during the process, as the result may turn out to be bad.
  4. Reiki is processed after the optimal size has been set.
  5. After all work, the parts should be sanded to smooth out any irregularities.

For the back wall of the cabinet, you can use a chipboard sheet, as a rule, this part of the furniture is not visible, and a simpler material is used for its manufacture.

IMPORTANT! The back wall must be fixed very firmly and evenly, it depends on how reliable the structure will be.

If the cabinet is designed for a large number of books, chipboard will serve as a good material for the back wall. It is easy to mount, it can support a lot of weight.

Required tools and materials

Materials for making a bookcase are selected in accordance with the chosen project and the interior of the entire home. If you want the product to serve for many years, use an array of natural wood: alder, cherry, oak, maple. The tree is not toxic, so it costs a lot of money. A more budget option may be furniture made of chipboard and MDF. In this case, the texture and colors are quite diverse.

For work, you may need the following materials:

  • slats;
  • curbs;
  • metal inserts;
  • glass with or without sputtering.

Wooden bars can be used as legs.

The tools should also be on hand, they need to be collected even before you are going to make the cabinet. You will need:

  • electric drill with various attachments;
  • screwdriver;
  • milling machine;
  • Sander.

In the process of finishing work, it is worth stocking up on such a set:

  • Ruler and pencil;
  • roulette and level;
  • knives and jigsaw;
  • screws, washers, nails and hammer;
  • brushes and paints and varnishes.

This list may vary slightly depending on the model you choose.

Preparatory work

All of the above points can be attributed to preparatory work. If you do not have a machine for sawing chipboard, then it is better to order sawing from a specialist, since this is a rather complicated process that requires a lot of attention and work experience. In the manufacture of a standard rectangular product, the ends are pasted over with veneer, or oak slats are prepared in advance, which are glued to the cabinet panels.

For shelves and sidewalls, it is better to use MDF, prepare the material in advance. Also, there should be an MDF edge 2 cm wide, 8 mm thick, do not forget about the slats.

When all the preparatory work is completed, you can start assembling the product.

Assembling the cabinet

It is necessary to assemble the structure on a flat surface to avoid possible distortions. The whole process is conventionally divided into several stages:

At the end, the back wall should be installed and fastened to the common frame.

IMPORTANT! For a bookcase, experts do not recommend using removable shelves.

Fasteners can be used in a variety of ways: nails, screws, construction stapler. It all depends on the materials and configuration of the product.
