I faced the question of neat and quick mowing of grass near the fence of the summer cottage for a long time, when I had to learn how to use an ordinary scythe - Lithuanian.

I immediately thought that it would not hurt to buy a simple lawn mower, which at that time was not easy. Therefore, I decided to experiment with a homemade design.

As a result, I gained practical experience in mowing grass, thanks to which I managed to buy a trimmer that suits my purposes well.

Based on the knowledge gained, I give advice to the home craftsman on how to make an electric trimmer with his own hands from used equipment based on an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner, drill or grinder with pictures, diagrams and photographs that allow you to repeat a similar design.

Please note that my lawn mower was whipped up from the most materials available. Its fastening was made for reliable operation without observing any design conditions, but with the provision of basic safety requirements. So do not judge strictly for the unpresentable appearance of the structure.

My construction consists of:

  • collector motor;
  • its attachment point on a wooden bar;
  • homemade cutting knife;
  • support wheel;
  • switch buttons;
  • protective covers.

Electric motor

The design of the lawn mower is based on a collector motor from an old Soviet-era 300-watt Buran vacuum cleaner. It was necessary to abandon its use for its intended purpose after various gaskets began to wear out as a result of prolonged operation, and air movement was disrupted. I was tired of eliminating the appearing fistulas that affect the pressure and suction, so I bought a replacement for him.

The appearance of the assembled trimmer from the engine side is shown in the photo. Since it is no longer in use, it has become covered with rust, and the remnants of the cut grass have dried up long ago and remained adhered to all parts. It is much more convenient for me to work with a factory design.

The engine did not have to be altered at all. I just made several fasteners and protective covers using an electric drill, a vice and a hacksaw for metal. In the next photo, a cap is raised, cut from a plastic bottle, which covers the brush assembly.

All parts of the homemade trimmer are fastened on a dried wooden stick without any processing. I drilled fixing holes in it, and screwed some details, for example, the handle bracket with a piece of wire.

Homemade grass knife

It is noteworthy that when I removed the fan impeller, I saw: the vacated space on the rotor shaft is ideal for attaching a homemade knife. Even the nut and gaskets did not have to be picked up.

Unsuccessful experience

At first I tried to attach wires of different diameters to the shaft. She normally started mowing the grass, but she broke off very quickly. Its structure does not withstand mechanical tensile and bending stresses developed by high engine speeds and oncoming grass. Therefore, trimmer manufacturers produce different types of line.

A method of making a lawn mower

I made a knife for a homemade trimmer using the following technology:

  • took a metal plate of mild steel;
  • cut it out in a rectangular shape;
  • drilled a hole in the center along the shaft diameter;
  • sharpened edges to reduce stress when mowing.

To show how it was fastened through the factory bushing, I slightly unscrewed the nut, and simply bent the knife itself by hand.

Support wheel

The main disadvantage of this design of the lawn mower, like all trimmers with a lower location of the electric motor, is the need to apply great physical effort to keep the knife in the desired plane when mowing. At the same time, the muscles of the worker tense, and he himself quickly gets tired. We need an emphasis on the ground.

Therefore, I attached small wheels from an old children's trolley to the motor housing and the rod by means of adapters. They are lightweight, but make the job much easier.

Switch button

It must be placed on the handle directly under the palm of your hand.

This way you can quickly turn off the trimmer.

Choice of design

I used a special fastening of a button with a self-return from one of the expired measuring instruments. It is simply screwed to a wooden rod with a soft copper wire insulated and, for better clarity, the photo is shifted from its axis to one side.

The switching capacity of the contacts with a reserve can withstand the power developed by the motor of 300 watts.

I would like to draw your attention to the self-return function. I do not recommend using a conventional switch. If during the work you accidentally fall, lose your balance or something unexpected happens, and the working trimmer slips out of your hands, then you cannot stop it instantly. A sharp knife will cut anything that gets in its way.

To prevent accidents in such situations, I even excluded the permanent operation function on the factory trimmer by removing the corresponding switch. I believe that safety and health are more expensive than such facilities with risks.

Mounting method

Accidental access to the electrical contacts of the wires is limited by the insulation of a special insulating tape.

In the next photo, I deliberately bared them. This will give you a better view of the attachment and connection.

The wires to the button of the home-made lawn mower are simply wrapped around the rod, and on the back side they are twisted and soldered into the break of one supply core of the cable. The connections are insulated with electrical tape, covered with protective shields.

According to safety rules, any switch or control button must switch a phase, and not zero. But in the design under consideration, it does not make much sense to determine its position every time, and a home-made trimmer was created for the sake of experiment, and not long-term work. He proved himself quite satisfactorily when mowing a lawn.

You have already seen their image in all the above photos. On top of the motor, to protect the manifold assembly during operation, I simply inserted the severed neck of a plastic bottle.

It was possible to make the lower cover from the body of the same vacuum cleaner, cutting out part of the sector from it. Attached it with screws and nuts.

Trimmer from a drill or grinder

The principle of creating a homemade construction based on this tool is exactly the same as in my case.

The motor is attached to the lower end of the rod, and the working knife is made in the form of a nozzle.

Knife attachment principle

For a drill, you can screw two nuts onto an ordinary hairpin, pulling them together with keys, and use the plane of the created stop to install the knife.

A fastening nut will complete this design. If you put in wide washers, then the fixation will be stronger. The lock nuts can be replaced with one, but it will need to be welded. The back end of the hairpin is inserted into the drill chuck and clamped like a drill.

The hole of the knife must be drilled in the center, and the assembled bit must be well balanced. Otherwise, lateral runout will occur, for which the drill bearings are not designed.

Set the correct direction of rotation of the rotor using the drill switch. When turning on the trimmer, the nut should work on the knife clamp, and not twist off. Otherwise, the sharp-edged knife may fly out of the holder.

Line trimmer attachment

You can make a reel for attaching a fishing line with your own hands, but I don't see much sense in this matter. It's easier to buy it in the store or use it from a broken trimmer.

The fact is that in the process of work, when the line is shortened, its cutting length can be restored by simply hitting the rotating head on the ground. This function works by maintaining the exact dimensions of the tip after complex mechanical adjustments. And a one-time attachment of the line requires frequent shutdowns of the trimmer to replace it.

  • once again remember the rules for handling electricity;
  • do not work without protective covers with open rotating blades;

Craftsmen nevertheless found a way out of this situation and learned how to make trimmers with their own hands literally from improvised means, using petrol and power tools that were not intended for these purposes.

From the grinder

Most often, a homemade electric trimmer is made on the basis of a conventional grinder, which is available from every home craftsman. This tool is almost ideal for converting to a trimmer. It has more power than store devices and a higher number of revolutions per minute. In addition, the standard nut used in the grinder to secure the discs already has holes through which it is easy to insert the fishing line (cord).

So, there are many options for making a barbell (grip). The simplest is a longer, than for a shovel, wooden handle. A grinder is attached to the end of it at the desired angle using ordinary tape. Therefore, under the washer into which the fishing line is inserted, it is recommended to insert a homemade disc with cut and curved blades so that it acts as a fan that creates a vacuum. In order to relieve the burden on the hands of the mower operator, the machine can be installed on a platform with wheels. In this case, you will already get something similar to a lawn mower.

You can also use either a pulley with a suitable bore or a plastic cartwheel to secure the line.

From a drill

The simplest mower is made in a matter of minutes from a drill or screwdriver. But first, you must make a knife from a sharpened metal plate with a hole drilled in the center. A bolt is inserted into this hole and clamped with a nut.

Since a drill with this attachment does not have a protective cover, such a tool is quite dangerous for the user. To protect yourself, you can place the drill, like the grinder (mentioned above), on a shovel handle or on an aluminum pipe.

Also, to protect the user of the mower from knives, a cover can be attached to the drill (attached to a plastic pipe, and put on the body of the device).

The drill is attached to the rod with clamps.

From a chainsaw

For the chainsaw, many different attachments have already been invented that expand the capabilities of this unit, for example, a cultivator, a drill, a boat motor, as well as a scythe attachment. You can see how it looks in this video. In case you want to make a trimmer from a chainsaw, then the maximum you can do is a lawn mower on wheels, since the engine of the unit is quite heavy, and you will not be able to apply the above options for making trimmers (with a lower drive) to it.

Therefore, a trolley is made first. It can be welded from a corner 25x25 mm. The dimensions of the frame should be 500x600 mm. The wheels are attached to the corners of the frame.

When installing the handle of the trolley, make sure that it does not overlap the trigger (starter).

The gasoline engine is installed (screwed through the holes for fixing the tire) to the frame in such a way that the gearbox is turned 90 degrees and the shaft is at the bottom.

Now all that remains is to attach the cutting tool to the machine shaft. This is done as follows.

  1. A small piece of pipe, 80 mm long and 50 mm in diameter, must be welded to the “sprocket” of the apparatus. It is better to cut the pipe on a lathe so that the ends are perfectly flat.
  2. Next, find a pipe with a slightly larger diameter - equal to 58 mm. It must also be cut to a length of 80 mm. Thus, you get a telescopic shaft, which is connected with 2 bolts (m6) opposite each other. The bolts must have lock nuts. Below is a diagram of the trimmer head used to secure the cutting tool.

Several holes must be made in the telescopic tubes so that the height of the knives above the ground can be adjusted.

It is better to make a knife of such a design as in the following figure.

Due to the fact that movable knives on rivets are fixed on the disk, they will simply bounce when they meet a stone or dry branch. This will protect the shaft and gearbox from damage that can occur when the tool is jammed.

The alteration process is carried out as follows:

  • having disassembled the electric screwdriver, they take out the motor;
  • attach it to the plug, having previously marked and drilled the landing holes in it;

  • attach the electric motor with 2 screws;

  • solder the output to the motor;

  • install an electric motor by pushing its wiring into the pipe;

  • mark the location of the future switch with a marker on the tube;

  • connect to the wiring switch, mount it;

  • contact clamps are connected to the ends of the outgoing wires for quick connection to the battery;

  • a battery holder is made from the adapter;

  • connect the drive, connect the adapter to the tube;

  • using a conventional clamp for terminals, the nozzle is connected to the motor shaft;

  • a protective casing is made from a plastic bucket;
  • glue the part to the pipe;

  • check the performance of the structure.

The created device will only allow mowing grass cover with soft stems. There are many different options for lawn mowers based on network models of drills and screwdrivers. The photos below show two homemade products.

First, a base is created from metal, plywood or other materials, to which the wheels are then attached, as well as the control handle. The electric screwdriver is fixed with clamps or to the rack. A cutting attachment is inserted into the chuck. To protect the feet from flying grass, a shroud is attached to the back of the base. Power is made through a button or directly from the network.

To assemble a sufficiently functional lawn mower, you need to take a drill driver from 0.5 kW of power.

Assembling the engraver

A cordless or networked model of an electric screwdriver can be turned into an engraver, which is also called a dremel, drill, mini-drill, or straight grinder. To do this, you just need to buy a nozzle in the store and grind any bit for it.

A homemade cartridge will allow you to use a variety of equipment designed for dremels.

Making a garden shredder

The garden shredder for grass and thin twigs (less than 1 cm thick) can be made on the basis of a cordless drill / screwdriver.

Create an aggregate like this:

  • choose a suitable container, for example, zinc boil;
  • a hole is drilled in the center of the bottom for the shaft, on which a knife or several blades will be fixed;
  • make a wooden or metal frame for installing the container or put it on the edge of the table;
  • a drill-screwdriver is attached to the frame or bottom of the boil, which is equipped with knives;
  • mount the on / off button;
  • make a slot on the side in the container - cut out a rectangle in front of the bottom 10 by 20 cm;
  • a sleeve is made of tin for ejection of crushed plants;
  • attach it to the container;
  • check the performance of the unit.

Knives are most easily made from hacksaw blades. They need to be installed with sharpening down. In this case, you can make several options for blades for different herbs. If you make an attachment in the form of knives for a drill-screwdriver, then the grass can simply be chopped in a bucket or other suitable container.

Screwdriver machines

Craftsmen have made many different machines from a screwdriver. They quite cope with everyday tasks.

If you need to work professionally, then you cannot do without more serious equipment.

It should be borne in mind that homemade products of this kind are often very limited in terms of load. But if there is no practical benefit from them, then entertainment is guaranteed.

This unconventional use of the screwdriver is not limited. Craftsmen constantly put forward new ideas, while their practical implementation is taking place. Other specialists adapt home-made devices to their own needs, while receiving various modifications of home-made equipment. You can also come up with something on your own, showing technical knowledge and imagination, giving free rein to imagination and creativity. The main thing to remember: when starting the manufacture of various devices, it is imperative to take into account that the created mechanisms are safe.

All owners of backyard plots are faced with the problem of mowing the grass, which grows literally before our eyes, and during the season it is required to refine their plot several times. The usual manual scythe has long been replaced by petrol and electric trimmers. But the price for them does not decrease and is quite tangible for many owners of summer cottages and private houses. Craftsmen nevertheless found a way out of this situation and learned how to make trimmers with their own hands literally from improvised means, using petrol and power tools that were not intended for these purposes.

Most often, a homemade electric trimmer is made on the basis of a conventional grinder, which is available from every home craftsman. This tool is almost ideal for converting to a trimmer. It has more power than store devices and a higher number of revolutions per minute. In addition, the standard nut used in the grinder to secure the discs already has holes through which it is easy to insert the fishing line (cord).

So, there are many options for making a barbell (grip). The easiest one is longer than for a shovel, wooden holder... A grinder is attached to the end of it at the desired angle using ordinary tape. The fishing line is inserted into the 2 holes of the nut, after which it is twisted. Thus, in a few minutes you have a trimmer that can mow grass without any problems.

For the safety of using a homemade device, you can improve it by making a protective casing (how to do this will be discussed later).

For advanced craftsmen with a welding machine, you can advise a more perfect design for fixing the grinder and the protective casing. It is made aluminum tube(serves as a holder) and a metal square profile. Looking at the picture below, you can understand the principle of making the holder.

The grinder is fixed to the holder with bolts inserted into the holes, which are intended for attaching the handle to the device.

The following photo shows how this structure looks from below.

By the way, the holder (rod) itself can be screwed to the holes for attaching the handle, when you want to make a simple trimmer that is easy to assemble and just as easy to disassemble if you need to use the grinder for its intended purpose.

To make it more convenient to hold the trimmer in your hands during work, and it does not rotate around the axis of the bar, you can attach to it side handle made from bent pipe.

From the vacuum cleaner

The trimmer from the engine from the vacuum cleaner is made according to the same principle as from the grinder. The motor must be fixed on the rod, and either knives or a plastic or metal disc into which to insert the fishing line must be fixed to the motor shaft. The cutting tool is covered from above with a protective cover.

To prevent dust and small particles of cut grass from getting into the motor, removed from the vacuum cleaner, it can also be hidden in a plastic casing made from the sewer pipe as shown in the following photo.

Since the motor in the vacuum cleaner is high-speed, it needs provide cooling... Therefore, under the washer into which the fishing line is inserted, it is recommended to insert a homemade disc with cut and curved blades so that it acts as a fan that creates a vacuum. It is required so that air is sucked in through the hose from above and cools the motor.

In order to relieve the burden on the hands of the mower operator, the machine can be install on a platform with wheels... In this case, you will already get something similar to a lawn mower.

You can also use either a pulley with a suitable bore or a plastic cartwheel to secure the line.

From a drill

The simplest mower in a matter of minutes is made from a drill or screwdriver... But first, you must make a knife from a sharpened metal plate with a hole drilled in the center. A bolt is inserted into this hole and clamped with a nut.

Since a drill with this attachment does not have a protective cover, such a tool is quite dangerous for the user. To protect yourself, you can place the drill, like the grinder (mentioned above), on a shovel handle or on an aluminum tube.

Also, to protect the user of the mower from knives, a cover can be attached to the drill (attached to a plastic pipe, and put on the body of the device).

The drill is attached to the rod with clamps.

From a chainsaw

For the chainsaw, many different attachments have already been invented that expand the capabilities of this unit, for example, a cultivator, a drill, a boat motor, as well as a scythe attachment. You can see how it looks in this video. In case you want to make a trimmer from a chainsaw, then the maximum that you can do is lawn mower on wheels, since the engine of the unit is quite heavy, and it will not work to apply the above options for making trimmers (with a lower drive) to it.

Therefore, a trolley is made first. It can be welded from a corner 25x25 mm. The dimensions of the frame should be 500x600 mm. The wheels are attached to the corners of the frame.

When installing the handle of the trolley, make sure that it does not overlap the trigger (starter).

The gasoline engine is installed (screwed through the holes for fixing the tire) to the frame in such a way that the gearbox is turned 90 degrees and the shaft is at the bottom.

Now all that remains is to attach to the unit shaft cutting tool... This is done as follows.

  1. A small piece of pipe, 80 mm long and 50 mm in diameter, must be welded to the “sprocket” of the apparatus. It is better to cut the pipe on a lathe so that the ends are perfectly flat.
  2. Next, find a pipe with a slightly larger diameter - equal to 58 mm. It must also be cut to a length of 80 mm. Thus, you get a telescopic shaft, which is connected with 2 bolts (m6) opposite each other. The bolts must have lock nuts. Below is a diagram of the trimmer head used to secure the cutting tool.

Several holes must be made in the telescopic tubes so that the height of the knives above the ground can be adjusted.

It is better to make a knife of such a design as in the following figure.

Due to the fact that movable knives on rivets are fixed on the disk, they will simply bounce when they meet a stone or dry branch. This will protect the shaft and gearbox from damage that can occur when the tool is jammed.

The rivets that hold the knives on the disc must be metal.

The diameter of the disc (made from sheet steel 4 mm) must be 180 mm. Knives are made from strips 30 mm wide and 120 mm long, cut by a grinder from a hacksaw blade for wood.

DIY trimmer knife

If you need to mow plants with thick or stiff stems, regular line will not do the trick. Therefore, you cannot do without a special metal knife. Trimmer knives can be bought at a specialized store, or you can make yourself, for example, from an old circular saw blade(no soldering). The knife is made as follows.


Homemade protective casing

If you are making a homemade mower, then you will definitely need a protective cover. It will protect your eyes, body and legs from injury from small stones and knife shards if they break.

The trimmer cover can be made made of aluminum sheet or thin sheet.


In this way, you can make and install a protective casing on a trimmer bought in a store if the guard breaks for some reason. Guards in factory machines are made of plastic and often break if you unsuccessfully hit the trimmer head on the ground to lengthen the line.

Trimmer strap

For more comfortable work with the trimmer, if it is intended to process a large area overgrown with grass, it is advisable to use a special belt. This device relieves fatigue from the hands and back of the mower operator and makes the process much easier when compared to the same job, but without the belt.

Belts are shoulder and knapsack... The shoulder strap is the simplest device and consists of a loop with two or one latch (carabiner), with which it is attached to the mowing unit. The second carabiner usually has a plastic plate attached to protect the operator's side from pressure from the trim bar.

The shoulder strap is usually used with light trimmers, weighing 3-4 kg. For heavier implements, it is more convenient to use a knapsack belt.

The trimmer strap can be easily ordered online or bought at a specialized store where these machines and accessories are sold.

The price of backpack belts starts at 250 rubles and above.

If there is a desire to make it with your own hands, then any hostess, having looked at this device, can easily sew it from available tools (old belts and belts). You may need to buy buckles and carabiners. But still, we recommend buying a ready-made knapsack suspension and not wasting time and money on making devices of a worse quality than the finished one.

Any home plot needs to be mowed. An electric or gasoline trimmer is expensive, and not every owner can afford to buy one. Therefore, some craftsmen have learned how to independently make a trimmer from a grinder.

From the grinder

Every master has a grinder. This is the most suitable tool for creating a trimmer. Unlike in-store devices, it is stronger in power and has good revs. Consider how to make a trimmer from a grinder with your own hands, the order of work:

  1. First, prepare the staple. It is designed to grip the grinder body. The metal plate is applied to the body and bent.
  2. There are threaded holes on both sides of the body, in which the rocker handle is attached. A trimmer bracket is attached to them.
  3. Holes are drilled in the bracket on both sides so that they correspond to the openings on the tool body. For accuracy, they make notes on the part with a marker, clamp it with a vice and drill.
  4. Then a guide is attached to the bracket. Its size should correspond to the length of the body or be slightly shorter. The guide is attached with a welding machine, the remaining scale is knocked down. The part is grinded with a metal brush.
  5. A handle (rod) is made from a metal pipe. To fix the handle at a slope, the end of the pipe is cut off at a bevel. The finished handle is welded to the structure, the scale is knocked down and the part is cleaned with a brush.
  6. To attach the tool, you need to unscrew the protective disc of the grinder.
  7. Then the homemade product is installed on the wheels. To do this, you can borrow wheels from a trolley or stroller with brackets.
  8. First, the grinder is mounted, then the wheel with the bracket. All are secured with a bolt. On the other hand, the same fasteners are made.
  9. The cutting unit is made of a steel cable. A nylon wire designed for trimmers will do. It is threaded through the clamping nut and key hole in a criss-cross pattern. Then the nut is tightened together with the cables.
  10. The wire is fixed with electrical tape.

I faced the question of neat and quick mowing of grass near the fence of the summer cottage for a long time, when I had to learn how to use an ordinary scythe - Lithuanian.

I immediately thought that it would not hurt to buy a simple lawn mower, which at that time was not easy. Therefore, I decided to experiment with a homemade design.

As a result, I gained practical experience in mowing grass, thanks to which I managed to buy a trimmer that suits my purposes well.

Based on the knowledge gained, I give advice to the home craftsman on how to make an electric trimmer with his own hands from used equipment based on an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner, drill or grinder with pictures, diagrams and photographs that allow you to repeat a similar design.

Please note that my lawn mower was whipped up from the most materials available. Its fastening was made for reliable operation without observing any design conditions, but with the provision of basic safety requirements. So do not judge strictly for the unpresentable appearance of the structure.


Safety regulations

I'll start with this section in order to remind you: any homemade lawn mower design can harm your health. This requirement is especially relevant for:

  1. electrical equipment;
  2. parts of mechanisms rotating at high speed.

Let's take a quick look at these two factors.

Trimmer electrical hazard

Electricity doesn't care about your health. It creates a current path where the best conditions and less electrical resistance are provided. : clothes, surrounding objects, a standing car. There is nothing strange about this. We need to take care of ourselves, use protective equipment.

When creating an electric trimmer with your own hands, immediately pay attention to the strength and quality of insulation of all live parts both inside the engine and on the external circuit. Its installation must be carried out by a qualified person.

During work, a homemade trimmer is necessary:


All three listed devices should be checked. They must meet safety requirements for technical characteristics, settings, and be properly adjusted.

Dangers of mechanical circuit

Brush motors develop very high rotational speeds. For vacuum cleaners, they can range from 11,000 to 30,000 rpm. This is quite enough for a small pebble, a piece of wire or chips to fly out from under the cutting head, like a bullet from a rifle.

The difference is that the sniper chooses the direction of the bullet, and the lawn mower pebble is the case. It is impossible to predict where he will fly. Therefore, when working, it is necessary:

  • to ensure a stable body position, which is a general requirement;
  • protect yourself with tight clothing made from natural cotton fabrics or jeans;
  • wear sturdy shoes on your feet rather than open sandals;
  • use goggles or face protection.

Lawn mower from an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner

My construction consists of:

  • collector motor;
  • its attachment point on a wooden bar;
  • homemade cutting knife;
  • support wheel;
  • switch buttons;
  • protective covers.

Electric motor

The design of the lawn mower is based on a collector motor from an old Soviet-era 300-watt Buran vacuum cleaner. It was necessary to abandon its use for its intended purpose after various gaskets began to wear out as a result of prolonged operation, and air movement was disrupted. I was tired of eliminating the appearing fistulas that affect the pressure and suction, so I bought a replacement for him.

The appearance of the assembled trimmer from the engine side is shown in the photo. Since it is no longer in use, it has become covered with rust, and the remnants of the cut grass have dried up long ago and remained adhered to all parts. It is much more convenient for me to work with a factory design.

The engine did not have to be altered at all. Simply, a vice and a hacksaw for metal made several fasteners and protective covers. In the next photo, a cap is raised, cut from a plastic bottle, which covers the brush assembly.

In this picture, the working knife is poorly visible, but it can be seen above.

For greater clarity, he lifted the protective cover with his finger and showed a close-up of the motor from the side of the brushes. Here, all the factory parts have remained in working order.

On the opposite side, a factory-mounted condenser is running.

Barbell

All parts of the homemade trimmer are fastened on a dried wooden stick without any processing. I drilled fixing holes in it, and screwed some details, for example, the handle bracket with a piece of wire.

Homemade grass knife

It is noteworthy that when I removed the fan impeller, I saw: the vacated space on the rotor shaft is ideal for attaching a homemade knife. Even the nut and gaskets did not have to be picked up.

Unsuccessful experience

At first I tried to attach wires of different diameters to the shaft. She normally started mowing the grass, but she broke off very quickly. Its structure does not withstand mechanical tensile and bending stresses developed by high engine speeds and oncoming grass. Therefore, trimmer manufacturers produce different types of line.

A method of making a lawn mower

I made a knife for a homemade trimmer using the following technology:

  • took a metal plate of mild steel;
  • cut it out in a rectangular shape;
  • drilled a hole in the center along the shaft diameter;
  • sharpened edges to reduce stress when mowing.

To show how it was fastened through the factory bushing, I slightly unscrewed the nut, and simply bent the knife itself by hand.

Support wheel

The main disadvantage of this design of the lawn mower, like all trimmers with a lower location of the electric motor, is the need to apply great physical effort to keep the knife in the desired plane when mowing. At the same time, the muscles of the worker tense, and he himself quickly gets tired. We need an emphasis on the ground.

Therefore, I attached small wheels from an old children's trolley to the motor housing and the rod by means of adapters. They are lightweight, but make the job much easier.

Switch button

It must be placed on the handle directly under the palm of your hand.

This way you can quickly turn off the trimmer.

Choice of design

I used a special fastening of a button with a self-return from one of the expired measuring instruments. It is simply screwed to a wooden rod with a soft copper wire insulated and, for better clarity, the photo is shifted from its axis to one side.

The switching capacity of the contacts with a reserve can withstand the power developed by the motor of 300 watts.

I would like to draw your attention to the self-return function. I do not recommend using a conventional switch. If during the work you accidentally fall, lose your balance or something unexpected happens, and the working trimmer slips out of your hands, then you cannot stop it instantly. A sharp knife will cut anything that gets in its way.

To prevent accidents in such situations, I even use the factory trimmer. I believe that safety and health are more expensive than such facilities with risks.

Mounting method

Accidental access to the electrical contacts of the wires is limited by the insulation of a special insulating tape.

In the next photo, I deliberately bared them. This will give you a better view of the attachment and connection.

Soldering, by the way, did everything the same. There are many other designs, though, which are covered in a separate article.

The wires to the button of the home-made lawn mower are simply wrapped around the rod, and on the back side they are twisted and soldered into the break of one supply core of the cable. The connections are insulated with electrical tape, covered with protective shields.

According to safety rules, any, not zero. But in the design under consideration, it does not make much sense to determine its position every time, and a home-made trimmer was created for the sake of experiment, and not long-term work. He proved himself quite satisfactorily when mowing a lawn.

Protective covers

You have already seen their image in all the above photos. On top of the motor, to protect the manifold assembly during operation, I simply inserted the severed neck of a plastic bottle.

It was possible to make the lower cover from the body of the same vacuum cleaner, cutting out part of the sector from it. Attached it with screws and nuts.

Trimmer from a drill or grinder

The principle of creating a homemade construction based on this tool is exactly the same as in my case.

The motor is attached to the lower end of the rod, and the working knife is made in the form of a nozzle.

Knife attachment principle

For a drill, you can screw two nuts onto an ordinary hairpin, pulling them together with keys, and use the plane of the created stop to install the knife.

A fastening nut will complete this design. If you put in wide washers, then the fixation will be stronger. The lock nuts can be replaced with one, but it will need to be welded. The back end of the hairpin is inserted into the drill chuck and clamped like a drill.

The hole of the knife must be drilled in the center, and the assembled bit must be well balanced. Otherwise, lateral runout will occur, for which the drill bearings are not designed.

Set the correct direction of rotation of the rotor using the drill switch. When turning on the trimmer, the nut should work on the knife clamp, and not twist off. Otherwise, the sharp-edged knife may fly out of the holder.

Line trimmer attachment

You can make a reel for attaching a fishing line with your own hands, but I don't see much sense in this matter. It's easier to buy it in the store or use it from a broken trimmer.

The fact is that in the process of work, when the line is shortened, its cutting length can be restored by simply hitting the rotating head on the ground. This function works by maintaining the exact dimensions of the tip after complex mechanical adjustments. And a one-time attachment of the line requires frequent shutdowns of the trimmer to replace it.

Take care of your safety first. For this:

  • once again remember the rules for handling electricity;
  • do not work without protective covers with open rotating blades;
  • do not trust strangers without proper preparation your dangerous homemade products;
  • do not get distracted when mowing, but keep control of the working area. Keep children, animals, and casual visitors away from it.

A home-made lawn mower helps to feel all the charms and disadvantages of electric mowing, the peculiarities of the operation of such devices, the need to balance the center of mass. After gaining a little experience with it, it is easier to choose a factory model, professionally prepared for long-term use.


Summer is coming and the grass has grown noticeably, while this is not critical, but you should already think about how to cut it. I will show you how to make a simple trimmer from a grinder to mow grass. More precisely, it will be a special device into which the grinder will be installed. After mowing, it can be removed again and used for its intended purpose. It makes little sense to buy a ready-made trimmer if you only need it 1-2 times per season.

How to make a trimmer from a grinder with your own hands

The first thing to do is a bracket to grip the grinder's body. To do this, take a steel plate and bend it on both sides along the body. I took the plate already bent on one side initially. Now I only have to bend the second edge.


I apply it to the LBM body. With a marker I notice the place of the bend.


Then I clamp it in a vice and bend it with hammer blows. I cut off the excess with the same grinder.


The tool body has threaded holes on both sides. A handle is screwed into these holes to cut on both the left and right sides, the handle is made as a cross-over handle. It is precisely for these holes that the trimmer bracket will be fixed.
Holes must be drilled on the sides of the bracket to align with the holes on the sides of the tool. We notice with a marker.


We drill while holding it in a vice.


Next, in the bracket, you need to attach a guide along the length of the angle grinder body or shorter.


We weld by welding. We knock down the scale and clean it with a metal brush.


Now the handle bar. It will be made of steel pipe. At the end of the pipe, we will make a bevel so that the handle is attached at an angle. Mark the cutting line with a marker.


Saw off the corner.


We weld by welding. We also knock down the scale with a hammer, clean it with a metal brush.


Now it's time to install the grinder itself in the seat. To do this, unscrew the protective circle.


To prevent the trimmer from touching the ground and at a certain distance, wheels will be attached to it. They can be taken from an old and unnecessary baby stroller or any other cart. As a last resort, make yourself out of wooden rounds.
I had the wheels along with the brackets.



We insert the grinder into the seat.


We attach the wheel with the bracket and fix it all with a bolt. Tighten well with a wrench. We do the same procedure from the opposite side.


The ready-made grass trimmer is almost ready.



It remains to make a cutting part. To do this, we take pieces of steel cable or a specialized nylon wire for trimmers. We pass it crosswise through the clamping nut, through the key holes.


We screw the nut with cutting cables onto the grinder.


We fix the wire with electrical tape.
And so the device is necessary and it may well suit you to mow the lawn in front of the house.
