Cover pattern for a chair with a square back

The easiest way is to sew a chair cover with a square back, more difficult with a rounded one, but more on that later. It is advisable to make a one-piece pattern, but if this is not possible, then sew from separate parts. Separate parts can be sewn on the chair itself by attaching the fabric with the right side to the chair. Then sew everything on a sewing machine, turn it right side out and put it on a chair.

In the figure below, the numbers indicate the parts that need to be cut out.

For parts No. 1,2 and 3, add 2.5 cm for allowances, and for parts No. 4, 5 and 6 - 2 cm for allowances on top and sides and 3 cm for allowance for the bottom edge. The sixth part must be folded in half in width and measure the middle of the back of the chair and add 9 cm to it. For a chair cover, one part No. 1, 2 and 5 and two parts No. 3, 4 and 6 are required.

After cutting, we begin work with the sixth part. We tuck 1.5 cm, and then another 5 and sew on a typewriter. Next, add the hemmed elements together and make a mark on the upper cut, as shown in the picture below.

Then we cut off the top of part 1 and the cut and grind them with their front sides. Do not forget about the allowance of 1.5 cm. We also grind parts 1 and 2. After we put the resulting part on the chair with the wrong side up, pin the side parts No. 3. It makes sense to sweep them right on the chair, then remove the future cover from the furniture and grind the elements along estimate. Then the part must be ironed.

With an allowance of 1.5 cm, we grind part 4 with short cuts of part No. 5. Next, we cut off the resulting frill with a side cut of one wedge, 3 sides of the seat and a side cut of the second wedge facing each other. With an allowance of 1.5 cm, we grind the resulting seams. We turn the cover on the front side, straighten the corners and iron.

How to take measurements from a chair

How to start making patterns?

The pattern of the cover is done in just a few minutes. There are a sufficient number of photos and videos on the Internet, as well as step-by-step recommendations for the work. The standard chair cover consists of three parts:

  • back - bends in half and goes around the chair, if desired, you can insert foam rubber or synthetic winterizer between the fabric;
  • seat - a synthetic winterizer must be placed under it;
  • ruffle - made of any length, to hide the legs of the chair.

Pattern for a cover by size

Patterns of covers for chairs can be pre-made from graph paper. This will allow you to roughly imagine the future version of the cape and will not let you spoil the material if you do not have experience yet. Covers for chairs are made quite quickly and the finished version can be seen in a few hours.

Work process

Knowing how to sew a chair cover, you can not only decorate the house, but also please your loved ones with an original gift. You can also decorate the room in this way in an original way for any event, because chairs with a back are almost always an integral part of the interior.

1. Taking measurements

Patterns of covers should be with a small allowance, for the necessary folds. If you decide to use a synthetic winterizer, then on the basis of the patterns you need to cut it out as well, just make it a little smaller so that it does not interfere with the sewing process. Sewing chair covers at home with your own hands is an affordable way to change the decor of your home.

Further, the patterns of the chair are well smoothed out to avoid irregularities in the sewing process. How to make a soft lining? Everything is very simple! The patterns are folded face to face, then a synthetic winterizer is applied to the wrong side and carefully stitched. Sewing chair covers should start with hand ties, for convenience when working with a sewing machine. Sew all the details with your hands first, and then try on what you are making a cape on, and this can be: a computer chair, a high chair or a cover for a high chair.

The remaining side will have to be sewn on the front side, but this seam will not be too visible on the product, because it will be closed with a high chair detail. A do-it-yourself chair cover pattern will come in handy for a long time, so do not immediately throw it away. Chair covers are in great demand among holiday organizers, and some housewives even open their own small business in which they offer to make such beauty.

The lower ruffle is sewn from below to the seat. A chair cover with such a cape looks more aristocratic and therefore it is better not to make it too short. Moreover, it can better hide the unsightly parts of the stool. You can also decorate it with a ruler of lace or put small bows around the edges. This option will be a wonderful gift for a children's room, little princesses will especially appreciate such a masterpiece. Knowing how to sew a chair cover with your own hands, you can constantly change the interior of your home.

2. Start with percale. You need to straighten the percale from the center to the periphery, pinning the pins every 5-8 cm. 3. Having tightly fitted the entire chair, cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 2.5 cm of seam allowance along the edges and on the seat. 4. If there is a hole between the seat and back, slip the percale in there and make a fold.
5. If the front line of the seat of the chair is convex, make recesses at the corners. 6. Pin the darts and check how correct they are. Sew them on the main fabric. 7. To make a skirt pattern, measure the front and sides of the seat. Cut and join pieces of percale to desired length and width.
8. If the back of the chair is too thick, you will need a special insert that connects the front and back panels of the back. 9. Lay another strip over the back of the chair. Finally, cut and fold the back panel equal to the length of the skirt.

Other types of capes

Don't stop there. You can also decorate a stool, if only there was a desire. Those women who know how to use a sewing machine should definitely use their skills. If you have experience in knitting, then you can easily make hand-knitted covers for chairs. It may take a little longer, but the result will be just amazing.

  • tightly seated;
  • freely seated;
  • cape.

Tight-fitting chair cover Loose-fitting chair cover Chair covers

Loose-fitting ones are sewn in order to be easy to wash. Capes help to quickly decorate a room, because they do not take much time to create. Step-by-step actions will help to achieve the most beautiful result.

Some sew pockets on capes in order to throw small accessories somewhere. This option is great for the kitchen. It is not necessary to do everything according to a template, you can use your imagination, and then you will like your work even more.

Thus, you can open up in a new area, show your abilities and surprise relatives and friends. Concentrating on sewing will help get rid of bad thoughts and get out of depression.

Sometimes it is not possible to choose the perfect covers for your interior, since the choice in the store is not always so large. On your own, you can make exactly such an interior that was thought out in your head. Yes, and handicrafts, as you know, are now very much appreciated, and perhaps one of your friends will want to contact you for a quick course in sewing and home decorating.

They not only transform the interior, allowing you to quickly change the situation, but also protect the furniture upholstery.   • it is cheaper than buying new furniture or reupholstering it;
  • capes protect expensive upholstery from pet claws and hair;
  • Covers for furniture allow it to always remain clean.

The simplest case in shape is one-piece. The fabric consumption for it will be more than for others, but it has many advantages. First of all, such a cape hides the chair completely. You can choose the height of the skirt to the middle of the legs or to the floor. This will hide the flaws of the furniture. For the pattern, you need to measure the height of the backrest, the chair itself, the width and depth of the seat.

DIY chair covers can have several varieties:

  1. Universal - fixed at the back with ties or clasps. They can hide the chair entirely, while sitting on it freely. There may be a cape on the back and seat in the form of one piece of fabric, which is fixed on the side with ties.
  2. A half-cover is a product that does not completely cover the furniture. Usually it is fixed to the legs or corners of the chair with a braid or elastic band.
  3. One-piece or separate covers. Capes are popular only on the seat. They are the easiest to sew, and require little fabric.
  4. Beautiful luxury cases. They are often used in cafes during banquets. You can sew such a cover on a chair with your own hands and for a home holiday. It will require expensive fabric, various decorative elements.

Building a pattern

It is easy to sew a chair cover on your own, the main thing is to choose a model and form the pattern correctly. There are no universal samples for this, since furniture designs are different. It is better to make blanks according to individual measurements. What is needed to make a pattern for a chair cover is a question that should be considered in more detail. Key recommendations:

  1. First, measurements are taken. You need to measure not only the width, but also the depth of the seat, as well as the height of the back. It is important to know that for some models these parameters may be different front and rear. If a cape with a skirt is sewn, you need to measure the height of the chair itself, take into account the slope of its legs.
  2. It is necessary to pay special attention to the shape of the corners of the furniture. They can be straight or round.
  3. If the chair has an unusual shape, for example, with a round seat or curved back, the pattern can be made directly on it. Sometimes it is required to make separate parts so that the product exactly repeats the bends, for example, side inserts.
  4. When cutting the fabric, be sure to make allowances for the seams. It is also important to consider that the material can shrink when washed, so it is better to sew a cover for the chair a little larger in size or wash the workpiece in advance.

Complex patterns for chairs with a back are recommended to be made from paper. It is applied to furniture, fixed with adhesive tape, and then cut. Such a pattern is accurate, it is easy to fit, change, improve it. Then the paper parts are applied to the selected material and cut out.

You can do the same with fabric. To do this, take cheap material or an old sheet. The fabric is applied to the chair, cut and sewn. At the same time, you can see how the finished product will look like, remove its shortcomings, and redo it if necessary. After that, the seams are ripped, and the trial version is used as a pattern.

Fabric choice

It is recommended to sew chair covers from inexpensive fabrics. They should be easy to wash, durable and wear-resistant. It is not recommended to make such capes from velvet, wool, velor or viscose. They will be impractical and expensive.

For one product, 1.5-2 meters is enough - this must be taken into account when purchasing the material. The required amount depends on the shape of the selected cover and on the size of the chair.

Typically, a standard canvas has a width of 150 cm. For chair covers with a back and a skirt, you will need from 130 to 150 cm, even with additional decorative elements. For ordinary capes, less material is needed, it depends on the size of the individual parts. When purchasing fabric, it is important to take into account seam allowances, the unusual shape of the legs or back, and the possibility of shrinkage.

The most commonly used fabrics for chair covers are:

  • synthetic canvas is a durable and practical material that goes well with any style of interior;
  • cotton fabric or jeans - they have attractive colors, are easy to wash, they are most often used to sew children's covers;
  • linen - ideal for the kitchen, as it is hypoallergenic, wear-resistant;
  • satin - looks beautiful, well suited for special occasions;
  • flock, lycra and other synthetic materials - stretch well, are practical, easy to care for.

In addition, sometimes it is not necessary to buy a new fabric. Products made from old jeans, plaids or even knitted sweaters look original and beautiful. Such capes on chairs create a cosiness and unique house atmosphere. Well they are suitable for interiors in country or loft style.

Chairs with backs and stools in protective covers do not lose any of their practical properties, but acquire new characteristics: beauty, elegance. Removable upholstery protects furniture from premature aging, abrasion.

Simple cover for kitchen chairs

In the process of sewing, you can determine how well this or that fabric fits the seat, how it sits and stays on it. It is impossible to check this when buying store products.

Important! If the cover is sewn with your own hands, it will be of high quality and will cost a minimum of money or almost free if fabrics from old things were used for sewing.

Homemade stool covers

The advantages of making "upholstery" with your own hands are obvious:

  • The seats will be original and will fit perfectly into the interior of the room, if you meet some requirements;
  • Furniture that has been improved by "cladding" will become more comfortable and "live" longer due to security;
  • It will take little material and money to manufacture, and the appearance of the furniture will change dramatically;
  • Removable covers can be easily removed and washed if they get dirty.

Covers not only protect furniture, but also complement the interior

How to choose a style

Chair decoration is classified according to several factors: style, which includes the form and function of the products, as well as the material for manufacture. The latter will be discussed in detail in the next section.

Depending on the shape of the products, they are divided into several categories:

  • Solid, which fully cover the furniture from external influences. They cover not only the seat, but also the back and legs. They have a strong fixation, which helps to radically change the design of furniture and hide its flaws;

The one-piece cover that has already become a traditional option for chairs with a back
  • Separate, which will include separate covers for the back and seat. Due to this, specific advantages appear: ease of care, since you can easily remove part of the decor and wash it, practicality.

Separate elements are practical and original
  • Only sitting. It covers only the seat and the lower part of the chairs. This option is the most practical and requires little time and economic costs.

The cape on the seat reliably protects it from abrasion

The choice of style also comes from the purpose and functions of the covers, based on which they are divided into:

  • Everyday accessories used daily. It is worth remembering that such covers, due to the constant load, should be washed more often. To do this, when choosing a material for them, they rely on a dense and highly resistant fabric that is easy to clean;

Simple cape for everyday use
  • Solemn. They are designed for festive events and carry the main task - to decorate the design and cause the effect of "wow" among the guests, to focus on the table. They differ from ordinary ones in that they are made, as a rule, from expensive types of fabrics with various decorations in the form of bows, frills, ribbons and draperies.

Solemn covers effectively focus attention on themselves and the table

The choice of fabric for tailoring

Tailoring can be done from a variety of materials. It all depends on the final destination of the cover. For everyday use, you need a practical and inexpensive fabric, and for the holidays - a beautiful and elegant one. In addition, they take into account the room in which there are chairs, its purpose and its own interior.

Important! For everyday use, you should choose a wear-resistant material that can be removed and washed or knocked out at any time. One of the criteria also becomes the absence of electrification and absorption of pollution. Some of the best fabrics for tailoring are considered to be cotton fabrics, microfiber, linen or silk.

Stylish case in bright colors

Cotton fabrics

Among them, satin, calico, denim or twill are in priority. Their key advantage is that they keep their shape well, do not cause allergies in sensitive people and can withstand machine washing. Cotton fabrics are inexpensive and are produced in various shades, colors and patterns. They also have disadvantages: fast fading and getting wet.

Cotton covers

linen fabrics

These include matting, linen itself and canvas. They are environmentally friendly, highly durable, dirt-repellent and can be subjected to enhanced machine washing and intensive use. Linen also does not absorb dirt well, it is hypoallergenic and easy to care for. Rough, minimally finished linen fabrics are perfect for a daily slipcover. The disadvantages are: the complexity of cleaning and ironing, rough texture. Linen covers are suitable for everyday use in country or ethnic style rooms.

Linen fabric looks practical but beautiful

Flock and microfiber

These materials are new generation materials. Their main advantages were:

  • wear resistance;
  • attractiveness;
  • Lack of creasing;
  • No deformation when washed.

Important! Despite this, microfiber and flock should not be heat treated: dried on a radiator and ironed. This is not necessary in the absence of creasing.

Microfiber upholstery for chair

Silk

Silk fabrics include: brocade, satin, crepe satin. Their advantages are that they are durable, noble and resilient. Silk fabrics make it possible to collect spectacular folds and draperies. There are also disadvantages: high price, demanding care and washing, gentle ironing. Such canvases are suitable for creating festive covers in classical and neoclassical, Indian and Arabic styles.

Silk covers are able to emphasize the solemnity of the event

How to take measurements and make a pattern?

The first thing to do when sewing is to take measurements from the furniture. The pattern directly depends on the design and dimensions of the chair or stool. To take measurements, they take material that holds its shape well and put it around the chair, securing everything with pins. At this stage, they take into account: how much the legs of the chair will be covered, whether there will be fasteners on the back, and so on.

Measurements can also be taken using tracing paper. To do this, a layer of paper is first applied to the seat and secured with pins. After that, a stroke is made along the contour. For allowances, add one and a half centimeters on each side. Subsequently, the details are cut out. The back is measured in the same way if sewing is done for a chair.

For the front of the cape, the length of the legs and the width of the front edge of the product are measured. After that, a given rectangle is drawn on the tracing paper with the addition of 5 cm at the bottom and 10 cm on the sides. To all this, add an allowance of 1.5 cm for the seam of the upper edge.

Practical and stylish capes

In the same way, patterns are made for the sides of the "skirt". To the edge, which is adjacent to the outer part of the back, add 15 cm. The pattern is made in several copies. The measurement of the outer part of the back is done like this:

  • A large sheet of tracing paper is applied to it to the top of the back;
  • The edges of the outer side are marked;
  • Lines are drawn along the legs to the floor;
  • 5 mi are added at the bottom and 1.5 cm for the allowance.

Important! Centers are marked at the top and bottom of the patterns, along which the canvas is then folded and cut into two even parts.

Transferring the pattern to fabric

The drawing is done on tracing paper in the section above. After it is ready, it is transferred to the fabric, taking into account the position of the equity threads. Transfer can be done with pencils, remnants or chalk. It is worth recalling that the pattern is made in duplicate.

Step-by-step instructions on how to sew a cover for a chair with a back

You can order tailoring from the purchased fabric from the master, but it is much more profitable and more pleasant to make it yourself. The only caveat: all measurements must be accurate and take into account seam allowances and fabric shrinkage during washing. For this, one or one and a half centimeters should be enough.

Instructions for sewing a simple product

To get started, you need to prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

  • Threads and needles;
  • sewing machine;
  • Sticky tapes;
  • Scissors and awl.

Taking measurements from a standard chair

The step-by-step instructions for making are as follows:

  • Make a pattern on tracing paper or film that fits well on furniture to perform all measurements;
  • Cut a seat from a soft synthetic winterizer and make allowances of 1 cm from the edges and 3 cm at the back;
  • Attach the synthetic winterizer to the seat and measure the recesses for the legs at the back. Cut notches along the contour;
  • Determine the height of the cover and, leaving the bottom of the furniture open, measure the sides and back of the chair;

  • Transfer the pattern to the selected material and cut it out, not forgetting to leave allowances for seams and shrinkage;
  • Round the corners on the sides for a better “seat” of the cover;
  • Sew all the pieces together on a sewing machine. Make notches on the rounded edges to avoid wrinkling of the fabric;
  • Sew decorative elements in the form of braid or beads around the perimeter of the seat;
  • Try on a chair cover;

Features of baby chair covers

If the cover is made on a highchair, then it would be most correct to make it from hypoallergenic types of cotton fabric, which is durable and wear-resistant. This material is breathable and easy to wash. The fabric itself is quite cheap and it will not be a pity to throw out such a cover in case of damage to it by a small tomboy.

It is best to put on a water-repellent cover on the highchair, which will be washed without problems. Since all furniture has its own design, you will have to individually carry out all measurements on a chair or on a standard cover.

  • Tuck the unsewn side and stitch it in any way;
  • Mark the places where the seat belts should be located if necessary;
  • Decorate the product with bows, ruffles, ribbons or decals.
