An embroidery machine is not at all like a printer or scanner: you cannot load a picture into it and get embroidery.

Therefore, embroidery consists of two stages. The first is processing the image and translating it into a format that the machine can understand. It is called differently: creating machine embroidery designs, digitizing a layout, developing machine embroidery programs. And the second stage is actually embroidery process... Let's take a closer look at the first question!

Machine embroidery designs are created on a computer using a special editor. It is made for professionals, so specially trained people, machine embroidery designers work with it.

The operating principle of this editor is not similar to automatic embroidery converter... Here, too, you cannot just upload a picture - and get a ready-made layout. Why?

The fact is that the quality of embroidery depends on many parameters. These parameters are determined material for embroidery, on which the machine embroidery will be made. Imagine, for example, thick pile fur and fine, delicate silk. Do you feel the difference? In either case, the embroidery design is done differently!

There are materials that are especially difficult for embroidery. For example, knitted products with embroidery: how is it necessary to think over each stitch so that it does not sink into the gaps between the loops? An experienced machine embroidery designer knows all the pitfalls of his craft and, when developing a layout, takes into account the peculiarities of the canvas.

The designer loads the original image into a special program. In the example, you see a raster image, but it is more convenient to work with a vector one. The sizes of the future embroidery are set.

The designer carefully outlines all the elements of the image. At this stage, everything is similar to normal work with a vector editor.

And now the fun begins! The designer is now converting the vector image to stitch format. Each object has its own parameters and properties. From this point on, the order of the objects is of great importance: they must be filled with stitches in the order in which the machine will embroider.

And now, when all the parameters are set, we get a ready-made design for machine embroidery! Now all the stitches are spelled out there in a language understandable for the machine, you can embroider!

So, depending on the material, sketch and the desired effect, the designer chooses the parameters. Let's name a few important ones.

• Thread tension... The embroidery should not tighten the material, but at the same time it should not be puffed up. Therefore, it is important to determine what the thread tension should be.
• Density of covering stitches... Density is the distance between two rows of stitches. This parameter is a puzzle for the designer, because the optimal stitch density depends on a huge number of parameters: thickness and texture of the material, its density, type and thickness of embroidery threads, fabric color, planned visual effects, machine thread tension settings, types of stitches, number and the nature of objects in embroidery ... In many ways, the experience and skill of a designer is characterized by his ability to work with this parameter.
• Stitch length... The height of the stitch lift above the fabric depends on the stitch length. Too long stitches can sag, too short stitches will make the embroidery stiff, from which the material will not bend later.
• Stitch angle... Changes the direction of the stitches on the fabric. By correctly manipulating this parameter, the designer can create a volume effect.
• Pull-in and pull-out compensation... "It was exactly on paper - but they forgot about the ravines!" An embroidery design that looks perfect on a computer can be quite crooked in practice. This happens because the material for embroidery is not cardboard for you, on which a drawing was applied with ink. The material stretches, can shrink and unclench, bend, wrinkle. So that the embroidery does not deform the material, the designer, when drawing up the program, takes into account all future contractions and stretches and deliberately distorts the layout so that it is not even on the monitor, but on the material.

This, of course, is not all the subtleties. After all, you need to specify the color of the thread, the shape of the edges of the stitches, and the types of stitches themselves, too ...

Work on machine embroidery design

It would seem that that's all? No matter how it is!

The layout of the future embroidery always consists of separate objects. An object is an embroidery area with uniform parameters. The designer should not only divide the picture into separate objects, but also determine their sequence. This is required to optimize the embroidery process. The important factors here are the minimum number of color changes and the minimum amount of thread trimming. This allows you to make your embroidery faster and better.

But this is not the end of the designer's work either. There are many more little things that need to be taken into account: are all the outlines filled with the appropriate stitches, are there any extra objects, there will be knots in the future embroidery, are all the colors transmitted correctly. And the stabilizer must be chosen.

A stabilizer is a special material that is placed under the fabric or between the fabric and the embroidery needle. It is required when working with capricious materials, improves the overall quality of embroidery, and facilitates embroidery on complex materials.
