Wooden shelving do-it-yourself drawings. DIY shelving: a universal furniture design

So that the "good" in the garage does not interfere with the movement, it is required to somehow organize its storage. The most convenient shelving for the garage. If there is enough space, they can be made on an entire wall or even on several walls. If there is no place at the bottom, you will have to move upstairs - make shelves under the ceiling. Not the best option, but sometimes the only one. And yet, floor-standing garage racks are safer, especially if they are securely attached to the wall (to avoid unpleasant situations).

Which rack is better: welded or bolted

Garage racks are made of wood and metal. Most of the wooden ones are non-separable - on nails and screws. They are usually installed permanently, fixed to the wall. Metal shelving can be welded. Then they are non-collapsible. There are bolted racks. These structures are mobile and can be disassembled if necessary. Their disadvantage is insufficient rigidity, since there is always some backlash in such a connection. To make the structure more stable, it is attached to the walls. To do this, metal plates with a hole can be welded (bolted) to the extreme posts. Drive a crutch into this hole (after having drilled a slightly smaller hole in the wall).

One of the options is a frame made of a shaped pipe and plywood shelves

Both welded and bolted garage racks serve well, but welded structures are more common. The collapsible option is chosen in two cases. First, it is possible to move to another garage and all the equipment will have to be transported, and the structure weighs hundreds of kilograms, so moving it entirely is problematic. The second - there is no possibility or desire to use welding (if the shelves for the garage are made by hand). The rest usually prefer welded ones - they are more stable and assemble faster with experience in welding.

On sale there are still metal shelves made of perforated corners. They are also mobile and can be disassembled, but they are connected with hooks (on the crossbars) and grooves (on the racks). Such storage systems are convenient - you can rearrange the shelves to the desired height. Their minus is expensive.

Designs and dimensions

Structurally, garage racks consist of racks, crossbars and shelves. Sometimes, to increase rigidity, transverse tightenings are also made on the back side - two steel strips welded / bolted diagonally to the extreme posts. They compensate for lateral loads increasing overall stability and reliability.

The dimensions - the height and depth of the shelves - can be chosen almost arbitrarily - depending on what you intend to store. The only thing that needs to be selected carefully is the span length - the distance between the posts in one section. It depends on the stiffness of the material you decide to use: the shelves should not bend even under full load. For heavy things / objects, the span is about 1.5 meters long, if the load is not too large, the distance can be increased to 2 meters, but it is definitely not worth doing more. If you need a rack for a garage of greater length, put intermediate racks, the distance between which still cannot be more than 2 meters.

A few words about the height of the shelves in the rack. The lowest shelf can be raised from the floor level by 50-70 cm (even more if desired). The heaviest objects are usually placed here. The rest of the shelves can be made at different heights, 30 cm - this is inconvenient and impractical. In general, a 1.5 liter plastic bottle should fit optimally on the shelf, which is 35-37 cm. This distance is convenient for use.

What are they made of

As already mentioned, garage racks are made of wood and metal. Wooden ones are lighter in weight, it is easier to work with wood, but they do not withstand such heavy loads. Metal ones are heavier (at times heavier), but you can put an elephant on them.

There is also a question of price. Rolled metal is not cheap these days. If you buy everything on the market or in a store, at the price of one rack (along with consumables) will cost you almost the same amount as the finished one. The only real way to save money is to buy metal at a metal warehouse with whole whips (there are 6 m and 12 m each), and then cut it into pieces of the desired length. Cutting can be right at the base, you will have to pay extra for services, but the amounts are very small. In this case, you will be able to reduce costs by about 20-30%.

Lumber costs less than metal. But do not think that the costs will be small: you will have to buy high-quality wood without knots, and this is the "elite" or "premium" class with a corresponding price tag. So it won't be very cheap.

Made of wood

The operating conditions in the garage are far from the best - high humidity, frost, alternating frost / freeze, sometimes heat. Not good for wood. Therefore, all material must be treated with antibacterial and protective compounds before work. Use wood products for outdoor use as the conditions in an unheated garage are more similar. You can choose a tool that simultaneously tints the surface to be treated and your product can be skipped. After processing, the materials are dried and only after that work begins.

When connecting parts of a wooden rack, you can use the methods standard for carpenters - in a quarter or half-leg. If this is difficult for you, you can also nail butt, and use metal corners and / or overhead plates to strengthen the connections.

Another point: it is better to connect with nails, and not with self-tapping screws. It turns out more steadily, less connections "loose". If you have chosen the option with reinforcement with plates, they can be mounted on self-tapping screws.

Now in terms of size: for racks, usually a beam of 50 * 50 mm is used, for crossbars, you can use the same beam or a little thinner - 50 * 30 mm. The flooring is made from:

  • boards with a thickness of at least 21 mm;
  • moisture resistant plywood with a thickness of 10 mm;

The cheapest are board and plywood. Laminated chipboard is much more expensive, but it does not need to be painted, which is a good plus. In order not to spend a lot, you can take the first and last sheets in a pack at the bases - they are scratched and are much cheaper.

Wooden shelving in the garage - drawing with dimensions

Another point: the side cut of the chipboard shelves remains open. If it is not processed, the chips will swell when the humidity rises, the shelf will warp. To prevent this from happening, coat the edges with silicone. With such processing, nothing will happen to the chipboard.

Metal

If you decide to make metal shelving for the garage, the choice of materials is wider - there are two options for rolled metal, plus standard solutions for storage facilities (perforated corners). You can also use metal parts intended for other purposes - for example, steel cable racks or cable channels that are used in communication are suitable.

Cable ducts and shelves - convenient and not very expensive

So, what is the frame of the metal rack made of in the garage:

  • From a metal corner with a metal thickness of 3-4 mm. The width of the corner shelf is 25-45 cm - depending on the planned loads. Durable, but metal-intensive material, weighs a lot, is expensive.
  • Profile pipe (rectangular in cross section). With a lower metal consumption (wall thickness is less), in comparison with a metal corner, it has better elastic characteristics (it is more difficult to bend), more resistant to torsion. Approximate dimensions for racks are 50 * 50 mm or 40 * 40 mm, for crossbars 50 * 25 mm or 40 * 25 mm, respectively.
  • The racks are made from a professional pipe, and the crossbars are from the corner. Metal thickness 2-3 mm, shelf width - 25 mm and more. Unfold the corner so that the flooring to be laid is like in a "nest".

The flooring on the shelves is made from the same materials as for the wooden shelving (board, plywood, OSB, chipboard), only sometimes non-standard options are added, which are used sharply with a wooden frame due to the high mass - sheet metal.

A board remains optimal for most regions - a reliable, not very expensive material. You need to take a floor, without knots (with a minimum of knots) with a thickness of 21 mm. Treat with antiseptics, then paint.

The advantage of metal shelves is high reliability with low thickness, the disadvantages are price, weight and "loudness". They also need to be painted, only first cleaned of rust, then walk with a rust converter and primer, then paint and preferably in two layers. Also, by the way, it is necessary to process the metal frame. Then the shelving in the garage will not rust.

Features of the assembly of metal shelving

Metal racks can be welded or bolted together. There are usually no questions with welding. If a corner is used, it can be overlapped - the difference of 3-5 mm when laying the shelves is invisible. If you wish, you can cut out the excess in one of the shelves, weld end-to-end, but trimming takes a lot of time, and you still won't see much difference.

With the assembly of the frame for the rack on bolts, the procedure is as follows: first, the squares of the sidewalls and shelves are assembled separately, then they are twisted together. For each connection, at least two bolts are desirable - for greater rigidity (less backlash).

If racks for a garage are assembled with their own hands from a profile pipe, the procedure is different. First, the sidewalls are assembled, short crossbars are attached to them. You get two rectangles with crossbars. Then they are connected by crossbars.

How you can make connections, see the photo. In one case, welding is still needed - to weld the "heel", in the other you can do without it - cut out the "ears", bend and cling to them.

There is another way - special crab systems. These are metal plates with recesses molded under the profile. Pipes are laid in the grooves, then two plates are tightened with bolts.

Such a connection is unlikely to withstand very heavy loads, but there is an undeniable plus - you do not need to drill a bunch of holes in the metal. In a profiled pipe, this is certainly easier than in a thick-walled corner, but it still takes a lot of time and effort.

By the way, bolts are used M8 or M6, respectively, large holes are required for them. It is easier to first drill with a thin drill, then expand to the desired size with a thick one. Even with that order, you still need a decent number of drills. To make them less overheated and less likely to break, put a jar of water next to it, periodically lower the drill there.

Layout, diagrams, drawings, ideas

In the garage, you need not only a rack, but you also need a workbench and a stand for hand tools - all kinds of keys and other small things, of which there are a lot and it is difficult to come up with a certain convenient storage place.

The workbench can be made in the center of the rack. It is convenient - everything you need will be at hand, you don't have to constantly go to the shelves.

The workbench can be part of the system, or you can make two separate modules, between which you can install the required table. If you don't like this arrangement, you can change the configuration - at least set it at a corner.

As for the tool stand. There is a factory option - a perforated sheet of metal with holders hung on it. The idea is pretty good except for the price.

As usual, there are several homemade products (what a garage without them) on the same topic. The ideas are simple to execute, maybe not so elegant, but convenient:

And if desired, all this can be put on wheels - to make the stand for the tool mobile. This is the case if in the warm season you prefer to work with the machine outside.

Well, and for inspiration ... so that in general all the instruments are in place))

When there are so many things that there is nowhere to put them, the task arises of creating additional storage space, and the rack is perfect for this.

  • it is easy to make, it will not cost much;
  • you can use any materials;
  • you can think over the design so that it does not take up much space;
  • its height will allow the use of space up to the ceiling.

Shelving is suitable for any interior and can fit anywhere in the house. The design itself implies a significant degree of freedom in the choice of material and shapes - it can be made for any interior, from the corridor to the living room.

Shelves made of natural eco-friendly material can be used in the nursery, in the kitchen. With the help of a rack, you can quickly put things in order in any cluttered room.

The shelving unit can also be used in the kitchen to free the kitchen counter from unnecessary items.

The design of the rack is extremely simple - it is a frame on which shelves are fixed at different heights. For added stability, it is attached to the wall.

For the rational use of space, hanging racks are suitable - the upper part of the wall is often left unoccupied, it can be used to store things.

Despite the huge volume that they hold, they do not clutter up the space, retaining a sense of air and spaciousness, especially for shelving without back walls. For storing stocks, you can choose just this type of shelving. They can be arranged so that the approach is from either side. They are also suitable for a garage or storage room.

Elegant creations made of wood and chipboard with partitions, drawers and lower closed shelves will be an excellent addition to the interior of the living room, bedroom, or your own office.

The rack can be used for zoning the room, while it will help maintain order. The absence of a back wall will make the separation of zones weightless.

The rack can be placed on furniture wheels, and, if desired, can be moved, changing the space, or used as a static partition.

Most often, racks are used to store books, and such a rack can stand anywhere, even occupy non-functional space in the corridor.

Despite the many advantages of solid bookcases, shelving is very popular, and the low cost only reinforces their advantage.

Small shelving fits perfectly into the hallway, regardless of its size. Umbrellas, shoes, gloves and keys get their permanent place, and are in plain sight and at hand.

The rack installed in the kitchen significantly saves space, because you can place hanging, hinged products, placing utensils on them according to the frequency of use.

In the living room, a beautifully crafted shelving unit can replace a bulky wall; it can accommodate everything from a TV set to books and trifles.

If you make several shelves with doors, it will be possible to arrange bottles of wine, glasses, dishes for receiving guests.

Development of a model for self-production

To begin with, the idea of \u200b\u200b\\ u200b \\ u200bthe shelving must be depicted on the drawing. To do this, the space that is allocated for it must be measured and plotted on graph paper to scale. Then the shelves are drawn, with reference to the real size and taking into account what will be stored on the rack.

If heavy things will be placed on it, for example, spare parts or tools, you should not make the shelves too long so that they do not sag over time. Their length should not exceed 1 meter, while they can be additionally reinforced with a metal profile.

If the rack is installed from wall to wall, then you need to decide which structure to choose:

  • a static version from wall to wall is possible, with the fixing of shelves directly on the walls. This solution has several disadvantages, and the gain is small in space;
  • it is better to make a stand-alone structure, then, if necessary, it can be moved. In this case, the drawing leaves a margin of at least 15 cm to the wall, maybe even a little more so that it can be placed and, if necessary, moved.

Even if there are light-weight items on the shelves, they should not be made longer than 1.5 m, otherwise they will begin to sag.

The shelves themselves should not be too deep so that all things can be easily reached. In general, the presence of several rows on the shelves very quickly begins to tire, especially when you have to display everything in order to find what you need. Therefore, the depth of the shelves should not exceed half a meter.

The height of the shelves should also be considered separately. It can range from 30-40 cm to 50-60 cm. This value depends on the size of things, you need to immediately plan what and where will stand. The shelf height should be at least 7-10 cm above the tallest item that will be placed on the shelf, then it will be convenient to get it.

The simplest shelving unit is suitable for a garage or a pantry, if the product will be in the rooms, you should consider a more elegant design solution - finishing, configuration, the presence of decorative details.

All calculations should be schematically reflected on a scaled grid with respect to proportions. Then just measure the dimensions of the components, make an approximate layout of the material and get to work.

Below is an assembly diagram of the simplest rack, the main parts of which are support frames and shelves.

Material selection

The most affordable material is wood, it is inexpensive and can be easily purchased. In addition, processing it requires minimal skills - if the rack is the first product, then making it from wood guarantees success even in the presence of errors.

For a simple model, you need to choose a 5X5 planed beam and boards for the shelves. Shelves can also be made of sheet material: chipboard, plywood.

Metal works well as well, but working with metal requires some skill, such as drilling a hole in metal. Metal products have increased strength, durability, and are well suited for high-tech interiors. It is possible to combine a reinforced frame with wooden shelves, which will be carefully processed - this product can be executed elegantly.

Instrument preparation

To complete the work, you will need the following tools:

  • construction pencil (regular pencil is also suitable, with a soft lead);
  • tape measure (preferably with millimeters, or at least with half-centimeter marks);
  • jigsaw;
  • drill (drills with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws and a drill with a diameter slightly larger than the head of the screw);
  • grinder with attachments or rings with different grains;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • a hammer;
  • a set of skins with different grains.

You also need to buy brackets for securing shelves or metal corners.

For wood processing, you need to buy special fluids, for example, with fire-retardant properties, stains of the desired shade, varnishes. Varnishes can be purchased immediately with the desired shade, there are also colored ones: green, blue, etc.

Preparation of parts

First, in accordance with the drawing, mark the main details of the product on the material, carefully measure everything to a millimeter.

After they have been cut, they should be processed:

Grind with a grinder, changing the attachments from coarse and medium to fine. When buying material, it is better to choose planed boards, then the finishing work will take less time. When sanding, you should pay attention to the sides and especially to the cuts - you need to make them smooth.

Soak the prepared parts with an antiseptic or stain, dry well.

Rack assembly

Rack assembly steps look like this:

Then the parts are aligned on the floor and fastened with self-tapping screws.

  • The boards must be cut to the expected length of the shelves. You can screw each one separately, you can first assemble the shelves, on the transverse beams (1-2), then install the already assembled shelves;
  • Installed longitudinal bars will increase the reliability of the shelves and fasten the rack frames to each other;
  • If the material is sheet, the task is simplified - they are cut out entirely;
  • After assembly, the product should be sanded and processed again, covered with paint.

Shelving options

The easiest way to get a new piece of furniture is to buy a prefab kit.

The advantages of such a solution to the problem are obvious:

All parts are already professionally processed, metal parts are made of stainless steel, galvanized or coated with anti-corrosion agents, wooden parts are also fully prepared for assembly.

Most models provide variability of shelf heights - they can be rearranged without any additional actions.

  • Metal racks are especially durable, the plasticity of the material will allow you to make a whole system around the perimeter of the room and store items of any weight on it, from the wheels from the car to stocks and conservation;
  • The traditional material - wood - will never lose its relevance. Eco-friendly, durable, easy to process, allows you to embody any idea. Depending on the design, it has some restrictions on the weight of things, is less durable than iron.

A self-made shelving unit will not only save a substantial amount, but also transform the space of the house. One has only to try to put your own piece of furniture once and load it with things, you will want to do something else.

Even if the hands are not very skilled, they will be able to make a shelving unit after watching this video. When viewing, you should pay special attention to the processing of parts and how they are connected.

Until a few decades ago, furniture was very difficult to obtain. This contributed to the fact that home craftsmen made it themselves. Today, in every store of relevant goods, you can find a model for every taste and wallet, but to this day it is customary to buy sheet materials that are used for the production of cabinet furniture.

The rack is used quite often in interior decoration. It has functional qualities, and its appearance does not burden the perception of the room. You can buy such a piece of furniture in a store, but its size, shape and color are not always suitable for the buyer. In this case, it is better to start making the structure yourself, using chipboard, which will save and simplify the work.

Preparation of the main material

Before making a shelving unit, you should decide if the design should be cheap or stylish. Thickened details can create a sense of monumentality and massiveness. Such a piece of furniture will look expensive, but it will take twice as much materials, effort and time. Therefore, it is recommended to use 16 mm chipboard.

Horizontal planes will need 6 pieces, each of which should be 1200x350 mm in size. Vertical planes should be cut in the amount of 15 pieces, the parameters of each of them should be equal to 320x320 mm. If you decide to make a stylish chipboard rack, then the number of parts should be multiplied by two. This option will stand on horizontal bars in the color of chipboard, but they can be replaced with those selected in the hardware store.

Preparing consumables

The main fasteners for furniture are 5x70 mm. If you buy a box of 1000 pieces, you can save 5x when compared to the retail price. In addition to legs and confirmations, it should be purchased with an adhesive base. Vertical planes will be visible from both sides, and it is better to fix the component parts with brackets from the working ends. The edge should be purchased wide, the standard 22 mm should be discarded.

Preparation of structural parts

If you are going to make a rack made of chipboard, then you will also have to prepare structural details. There is no point in sawing a laminated board at home unless you have a circular saw with a quality blade. It is better to entrust these manipulations to professionals who are engaged in the manufacture of furniture. But you can glue the edge with your own hands, using a regular iron to warm up the glue surface. The regulator must be set to 3/4 of the maximum power.

After that, you need to attach the edge to the end of the parts, warm up and come with a dry rag. The rag should be passed over the surface several times to make sure the edges are securely attached. The protruding excess is cut off with a knife and processed with fine-grained sandpaper. You should not be zealous with sanding, otherwise you will get a chamfer that is useless on chipboard furniture.

Assembling

When making a rack from chipboard, you need to use confirmations as screeds. Through 8-mm holes are made in the plane, 5-mm holes must be made at the ends of the parts, going 60 mm deeper. In order not to face difficulties when using hand keys that are sold together with confirmations, you should purchase a hex bit for a screwdriver. In order for the chipboard rack to be original, the vertical planes can be positioned as you like. The main requirement in this case is that the holes for the fasteners coincide, and the structure itself is stable.

An alternative chipboard rack: assembly from individual cubes

A do-it-yourself chipboard rack can be made using a different technology. It will involve the assembly of individual cubes. Detailing involves the preparation of 20 sides of square cubes with a side of 300 mm. Large shelves will have dimensions equal to 700x300 mm. They will need 10 pieces, as well as small shelves. The dimensions of the latter will be 500x300 mm. Fiberboard detailing involves cutting 5 blanks with dimensions that are equal to 695x295 mm. Another 5 elements should have dimensions equal to 495x295 mm.

Fasteners and accessories

When racks are made of chipboard, photos of such finished structures and a description of the work should always be at hand at the master. So, for example, they will make it clear that the ends should be pasted over with a melamine edge. It matches the color of the base material. Confirmates with the above dimensions will be needed to carry out the work. You should also purchase furniture nails, their dimensions will be 1.5x25 mm. Purchase self-tapping screws 4x30 mm. With their help, you can pull the cubes together as soon as you make a beautiful structure.

Chipboards can be made only after you see that there is a certain set of tools available, among them:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • a hammer;
  • bits for a screwdriver.

After all the tools and parts are ready, you can start assembling.

Method of work

In order to make shelving, chipboard is quite often used by home craftsmen. The technology provides for the assembly of a cube; for this, the rear and front edges, as well as the lower and upper edges, should be marked on the sidewall. Letters are placed on the plane, this will allow you to navigate. Measure 40 mm from the back and front, while 8 mm from the bottom and top. This will allow you to mark the sidewall for confirmations.

8mm holes are drilled in the marks obtained. The shelves will have the same width and different lengths and will need to be drilled to the width. Holes are made in the thickness of the parts with a 5 mm drill, for this you need to go deeper by 60 mm. To obtain a cube, the shelves are pulled together with the sides. Hardboard can be nailed, but it is important to keep right angles. Confirmation hats are decorated with plugs, which can be purchased at the hardware store.

Chipboard racks for a home must have a solid base if the structure will have an impressive height. Before starting work, you need to mark the wall. For bearing supports, in this case, wooden beams are usually used. If the rack has the height of the room, then the base is attached not only to the floor, but also to the ceiling. Wooden beams in this case are an excellent base, they can be rectangular or square. Everything will rest on the final size of the finished structure, the width and depth of the shelves.

The frame is twisted with self-tapping screws, and the corners are reinforced with strips. The base can be fixed to the wall, then the rack will have a high degree of stability. It is important to ensure that the supporting legs are vertical. The transverse side braces will ensure the reliability of the rack, which will make the structure rigid. These factors must be taken into account if the rack is subjected to high loads.

Conclusion

If the described piece of furniture reaches the height of the ceiling, then it is possible to sheathe ready-made supports not only chipboard, but also MDF. Fastening in this case is carried out to the bars, on the sides, top and bottom. The result is a finished box that does not have a back wall. But if you wish, you can supplement the rack with it. The simplest design consists only of shelves and beams. After completion of the work, the material can be painted.

The most practical and simple design for storing a variety of things and objects in a home is a rack. It can be installed not only in a closet, but also in any other room, from an office to a bedroom, as well as on a closed balcony or in a garage.

Shelves - different in design and operation options

When in an apartment or house there are no special places for storing things, working tools, books and other little things, the dwelling very quickly becomes littered. It's good if the living space allows you to install an additional chest of drawers or wardrobe, equip a pantry. But in many apartments, there is simply no such opportunity. Their square is not designed for a large amount of furniture. In such cases, it makes sense to independently make a compact and at the same time roomy rack, using affordable and easy-to-handle wood material for its manufacture.

A wooden rack is constructively a product with special racks on which shelves are fixed. The number of the latter can be any. On the shelves, you can store relatively small items - tools used by home craftsmen, dishes, all kinds of knickknacks. With the correct design of such a structure, it will fit without problems even in a very modest dwelling in terms of square. In addition, wood products are suitable for any interior of a house or apartment. Natural wood harmoniously fits into the classic decor of the room, and into the newfangled options for its arrangement, be it Provence or country.

Homemade racks are divided into several types. Each of them has its own characteristics. For example, stationary products are mounted "forever" in one place. They are built in the form of a solid frame with many cross members and several racks, allowing you to mount the required number of shelves. Mobile racks are described with a similar design. But, unlike stationary ones, they are necessarily supplied with wheels. With the help of the latter, the described furniture easily moves throughout the house. This option is suitable for people who constantly change the interior of the house, rearrange the objects in it.

In small apartments, we recommend installing hanging wooden racks. They allow rational use of the available space by optimizing the available space. Hanging structures usually include a small number of shelves fixed to the walls. If you need a rack exclusively for small items and things that a person uses every day (hygiene products, tableware, kitchen utensils), you can make a rotating structure. It can be both mobile and stationary. Rotating racks are most often placed in kitchens and toilets, mobile - in bedrooms and children's rooms, installed once and for all - in libraries. Suspended structures are allowed to be mounted in any premises.

Preparation of materials for the assembly of the structure - where do we start?

To make the structures of interest to us, according to experts, it is best of all from high-quality boards (timber) made of red breeds, oak or more affordable pine. The use of products from chipboard materials is not encouraged due to their short service life. It makes sense to use such blanks only in certain cases. For example, when a temporary storage facility is being built.

The selected wood material must be well dried. It is optimal if its moisture content is no more than 12%. Before assembling, the boards are necessarily impregnated with special compounds and antiseptic solutions. If the rack is planned to be installed in the bathroom or in the kitchen, the workpieces are additionally processed with water-repellent mixtures. After applying the indicated compositions, the boards must be left for a couple of days in the room where we will be assembling homemade furniture. During this time, they acclimatize to the humidity and temperature in the room.

In addition to the boards, we will need metal corners, clamps for shelves, plywood sheets, a beam for the construction of crossbars, legs on wheels (if a mobile structure is planned), a brush and varnish for wood coating, fastening screws, wood glue. Shelving tools need the simplest. A hammer, drill, grinder and jigsaw will be enough. Don't forget to bring a pencil and tape measure as well. Without them, we will not be able to markup and make construction drawings. And without these operations, it will not be possible to build a really high-quality rack.

Dimensions and drawings of self-made structures - listen to specialists

To assemble a practical and easy-to-use structure, you should decide on the place where it will be mounted. We measure the parameters of the area allocated for these purposes and strictly focus on them when designing the rack. If the work on creating a rack is being performed for the first time, and the structure itself is intended for storing cans with seaming, rarely used items and working tools, it is better to design a simple structure. No need to come up with pretentious forms. Do not try to decorate a purely practical structure. For the manufacture of such racks, it is enough to determine the height and width of the shelves.

If home-made furniture is part of the original interior of the room, you will have to approach the issues of its design more creatively and much more responsibly. It is necessary to think over not only its size, but also the decoration option, consider different schemes for arranging structures, choosing the best one. It all depends on your personal preferences, ideas about beauty and financial capabilities. You can create very unusual structures from wood with your own hands that will adorn any home.

Diagrams for arranging homemade devices and drawings for their manufacture can be the simplest (Figure 1). You don't need to have engineering graphics skills. In the drawing, you just need to correctly indicate the dimensions of the planned structure. And then build it strictly according to them.

  1. 1. The width is determined taking into account the available free space in the room. Nuance. The width of the rack is taken 7-10 cm less than the width of the free area. This is necessary to ensure that all assembly work takes place in the most comfortable conditions.
  2. 2. The width of the shelves is calculated based on the purpose for which they will be used. If the rack is needed for storing bulky items (car tires, heavy tools), we take its maximum value (it is limited only by the bearing capacity of the structure) When small things with a small mass are stored on the shelves, a width of 25–40 cm will be enough.
  3. 3. The length of the shelves is also selected taking into account the overall dimensions of the items that will be stored on them. Tip: do not make the shelves longer than 150 cm. As their length increases, the risk of deformation and destruction of the shelf increases.
  4. 4. The optimal depth of the shelves is 50 cm. If this recommended size is exceeded, you may have difficulty getting things.

We take the height of the shelves within 30-60 cm. The lower shelf, as a rule, is made deeper than the others. It is convenient to store heavy tools and large objects on it. And the upper sections are intended for shoes, clothes, bulky, but lightweight boxes and things.

Making rack elements - the main stage of work

The rack is made by hand according to an understandable algorithm: first we cut out the individual parts of the structure, and then we put them together. Work should always begin with the preparation of the lower foundation of the structure of interest to us. It must be made from a solid board. Its thickness is taken such that a three-centimeter self-tapping screw can be screwed into the resulting shelf.

To increase the strength of the base, it is advisable to fix pieces of timber in its lower part. We take their length and width the same. We install the bars across the base shelf in 50–100 cm increments. Now we make the side posts (in fact, the walls). We use timber or boards. If we want to save on materials, we use plywood instead (choose thicker products).

The width of each plywood rack must be equal to the width of the bottom board. But their height is not limited by anything.

Further, on the inner sides of the side walls, we put marks for placing the shelves. We select their height ourselves. Most often, home craftsmen make shelves of the same size, which is wrong. It is better to design their heights differently. Then we will have a really spacious design that allows you to rationally store things with different geometric parameters.

The next stage of work is the manufacture of shelves. They should fit into the rack freely, but tightly. The thickness of the shelves is 2.5–5 cm, the width is equal to the depth of the structure. It will be correct to support each shelf with transverse bars (by analogy with the lower base). It is easy to nail them down with small nails. After that, we make the back of the rack, with which it leans against the wall.

If you are satisfied with the color and texture of the wall in the room, you do not need to install the back of the structure. In other cases, we make it from chipboard or plywood. There is no point in using expensive boards. We have prepared all the necessary elements, which means that you can start assembling the structure. This operation will not cause any particular problems for us.

Assembling a system for storing things and objects - no difficulties are foreseen!

The connection of individual parts of the rack can be performed in a convenient way for a home craftsman. Some use nails and screws, others prefer glue. The choice is yours. We start the assembly by attaching the back wall to the bottom shelf. This procedure is best done with self-tapping screws. It is clear that when there is no back wall in a homemade cabinet, we skip this stage of the operation, and we begin assembly work with the installation of shelves and side walls-racks. On the latter, we have the markup. We install the holders on the marks made. For their manufacture, materials such as plastic and metal are used.

If there is no special load on the shelves, we attach plastic holders, otherwise - metal ones. And already on the fixed elements we put shelves. Then we take the self-tapping screws and connect the lower base with the side walls into one frame. It is very important here to achieve perfect evenness of the corners of the structure. Additionally, you can fasten the base and racks with metal corners. This will significantly increase the strength of the rack.

Some self-taught craftsmen do not consider the holders to be reliable enough and prefer to install the shelves using a different technology. It is more labor intensive. But the finished structure is significantly stronger. The technology involves fixing the shelves directly to the racks on the sides of the rack. The operation is performed with a partner (you cannot handle it yourself) according to the following scheme:

  1. 1. We connect the base and side walls.
  2. 2. One person brings the shelf to the mounting location, inserts it and holds it firmly.
  3. 3. The second fixes the shelf with self-tapping screws from the back side.

The operation must be performed very carefully. The slightest distortion - and the appearance of the homemade rack will be ruined. To avoid this, the process of installing and fixing each shelf should be carried out using a building level.

After assembly, the structure can, in principle, be placed in its intended place. But experts advise to additionally cover it with a lid, which is installed above the topmost shelf. This addition protects the rack and items stored on it from dust. The cover can be glued or fixed with nails, screws. It also does not hurt to attach legs to our construction on small rollers. This will make it possible to move the rack around the dwelling.

If chipboards or other products made from compressed sawdust were used to make the back wall or shelves, it is advisable to decorate the structure. The easiest option is to cover parts of the rack with melamine film. It is fixed with a hot iron on chipboard, from which all roughness is removed beforehand using sandpaper or a grinder. The wood materials from which we made our home cabinet can also be varnished or stained. Then the rack will look more elegant and respectable.

You can store unnecessary things on the rack. This is a convenient place, the presence of which allows you to avoid cluttering the apartment. It is practical and simple in its structure and appearance. A shelving unit will bring many benefits not only in the home, but also in the garage. You can also use it to arrange a pantry on the balcony.

How to make a rack with your own hands? To answer this question, let's prepare simple tools and materials. The manufacturing process is fast, and you don't have to spend money on buying such furniture from the store.

Preparation of tools and materials

Before starting assembly, the following accessories are prepared:

  • Fasteners (screws);
  • Screwdrivers or screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw for cutting material;
  • Level and tape measure;
  • Drawing tools (pencil, chalk).

Beginners should know what a rack can be made of, for this you will need:

  • Bar;
  • Reiki;
  • Shelves.

The selection of materials for the future shelving is done taking into account climatic characteristics and purpose. The location of such structures in damp rooms will cause corrosion of metal elements, and the wooden base will begin to rot. To avoid such phenomena, you should use varnish and other protective coatings.

If it is supposed to use MDF or chipboard for the shelves, then the material must be sawn before processing. The procedure can be done by yourself using a jigsaw.

In the absence of a tool, the cut is made in special stores. Many materials are suitable for the manufacture of shelves: cut boards, thick glass, plywood, plastic.

Structures and drawings

On the Internet, there are different schemes and drawings of shelving. You can choose any, but you will have to make changes for the best result. It's all about the size of the place where the structure will stand. For measurements, we will use a tape measure and a pencil.

If canning twists or working tools are stored on the rack, then the design of the product is chosen as the simplest one. There are various do-it-yourself shelving options.

The width and height of the product are selected depending on the room and the stored items. It is not recommended to make long shelves, deflection from a large weight is possible, or the shelf itself will bend under its own weight. In this case, its length should not exceed 90 cm.

It is also necessary to fasten the elements together with the calculation of the expected load. For this, the appropriate fasteners are selected. To attach the rack to a brick-type wall, you should take self-tapping screws no more than 52 mm long, and if the wall is concrete, then 89 mm.

Having decided on the measurements and the appearance of the rack, the design process proceeds to the next stage of the drawing development. Rough sketches of a general view are made, and the dimensions of the shelves are noted.

Phased production

Detailed instructions for the manufacture of shelving can be divided into stages:

  • Assembling the base.
  • Installation of boxes and shelves.
  • Finishing work.

Before starting the installation, markings are applied to the wall. The rack frame, made to the full height of the wall, must be fixed from above and below. This will give it stability.

The rigidity of the structure will be given by a base made of wooden beams. Such a bearing support will serve as the key to success for the entire structure.

The size of the shelves determines which type of bar to use. They can be square or rectangular. To fix the base of the board and the bars, self-tapping screws up to 3 cm long are used.

Each bearing support must be strictly upright during installation. To make the structure rigid, lateral transverse type braces are installed. This condition is met if heavy items will be stored on the rack.

When the base is formed, it is necessary to proceed with the installation of the box elements. It is assembled from chipboard or MDF boards. Other types of materials are also used. Each plate is attached to the sides of the structure. The back wall remains uncovered.

The installation of the shelves is started at the last stage of assembly. To begin with, markings are applied to the walls of the structure. The way the shelves are fastened depends on the weight they have to support.

Metal corners hold the load more efficiently. Bars are mounted on them, then shelves. It is better to choose the self-tapping screws securing the timber and the shelf by 6 mm longer than the thickness of the shelf.

On the Internet, you can see photos of shelves with various finishes. Every amateur will find something interesting for himself.
