How to make a bench with a back.

The pictures provide detailed dimensional drawings for making a garden bench.

We start making a garden bench, and start with making bench legs.

Mark the cutting lines on the board and saw off the leg pieces with a hacksaw. Smooth the ends of the legs with sandpaper.

Assembling the sidewalls of the bench.

We attach the upper support to the front and rear legs. Align the legs with the support, drill the holes and secure them with the screws. Let's make two sidewalls.

Assembling the bench seat frame.

Saw off the blanks for the seat frame. We combine the frame blanks, drill holes and screw in the screws.

Assembling the frame and sidewalls.

Now you need to connect the sides of the bench and the seat frame.

The back of the bench.

Saw off 3 supports for the back.

Install and secure the seat back supports as shown in the figure.

Install the slats to the seat frame, making sure you place them the same distance, drill holes and secure the slats with screws.

Now attach the planks to the backrest supports.

Armrest attachment.

Place the armrests on the sides of the bench, drill holes in the armrests and secure them with screws.

The screw heads can be hidden by covering them with a wooden putty, then let the putty dry for several hours. Sand the hardened filler with sandpaper, and then apply several coats of paint or varnish to the bench to enhance the bench's appearance.

A garden bench is a beautiful element of landscape architecture. With its help, you can create a recreation area in the local area. Such structures are built both in production and do it yourself at home. Different materials are used in the production, even in some cases they can be constructed from chairs, logs, and other material that is in every summer cottage.

Design features

Benches, unlike other small architectural forms, must correspond not only to style, but also to ergonomics. Therefore, when choosing them, the level of comfort, a single concept of landscape design is taken into account.

Since their first appearance in Ancient Egypt, many different types of benches have been invented, from home garden decorations to common ergonomic designs. Their variety is just as wide, and in order to streamline this assortment, we divide the designs into three main types:

  • Street benches - a functional structure that is built from practical, reliable materials. They are rarely distinguished by the beauty of forms, variety of style.
  • Garden structures - openwork benches with wrought iron elements. They perfectly complement the overall landscape design, equip the functional space.
  • Constructions for giving - differ in a variety of species. They are a bright accent in the formation of a suburban area.
All designs can be divided into:
  • stationary - a static element of landscape design;
  • mobile - you can carry, install structures in any part of the personal plot, creating a comfortable recreation area.

By their location, we can divide:

  • ceremonial - beautiful structures made of forged elements, wood, stone;
  • dining - models are comfortable, located on terraces, not far from the barbecue. They are built from different types of wood;
  • structures that are located near water: a stream, a pond, a fountain. They are built from moisture resistant materials. Used concrete, stone;
  • seasonal - mobile structures. Strong, reliable materials are used.

Manufacturing material

The material from which they are built determines not only their location, but also the features of their operation. Depending on the material, they are divided:

Wooden - differ in special aesthetics. They fit well into almost any style of landscape design. Only wood species resistant to decay are used for production. They use walnut, cherry, oak, conifers. The tree undergoes a series of treatments: the material is impregnated with a composition that increases its resistance to moisture, varnished or special moisture-resistant paint.

Stone structures Are robust, durable models. They will emphasize all the beauty of horticultural crops. For construction, granite, quartz or marble are used. Such models are resistant to moisture, frost, and sunlight. They are stationary, massive and mounted in places with high humidity.

Metallic - resistant to various damages, they are reliable. For a garden in a vintage style, choose forged models, decorated with various decorative elements. The modern style is emphasized by cast iron constructions. A beautiful, graceful wrought-iron armchair will successfully fit into the country style.

Plastic - often used in the production of mobile structures and those that are installed near water bodies. Such models can have different colors and decor.

Combined models - a successful combination of several materials, such as stone and wood, metal and wood.

Each model is installed depending on the style of the personal plot, the special preferences of the owner.

Garden benches: types and features

Each country house has an adjacent territory. It can be functional - even beds, bushes, greenhouses, and other garden attributes. Some people prefer an English lawn with flower beds. But there are people who prefer shady gardens.

Regardless of this, in the summer, this area turns into a place for recreation. It is made comfortable by a garden bench, which will look harmonious in landscape design.

How to choose a garden bench?

The personal area is divided by designers into three main types according to style:

  • regular gardens - created according to geometric laws: straight paths, strict forms, each bush, flower bed is in its place;
  • rustic or country style - bright flower beds, a wooden fence, trees and beds;
  • landscape areas. When creating a style, the natural beauty of the greenery is preserved on the site. Each element, for example, a driftwood or a deflated branch, is not removed, but is played up with the help of various decorative elements, including benches.

Several garden bench options are suitable for each garden.

They choose them depending on:
  • the size of the garden;
  • design mobility;
  • material from which it is made.

For example, for a small garden in a rustic style, structures made of wood will look beautiful. In some cases, you can use benches that combine metal and wood. They will accentuate the refined style and become pleasant additions to it. Stone models cannot be installed. They will stand out against the backdrop of beautiful greenery and well-groomed beds.

In landscape areas, for example, close to blocks of stones that will be beautifully laid harmoniously, a stone bench will fit in. It can be a model with or without a back. Under the hanging willow branch, you can place a small wooden bench, in which there will be no metal parts.

In regular gardens, stone furniture can be installed near a fountain or stone statue. She will complement the uniform style and bring a zest to it ... Wooden elements will look out of place.

Combined: metal and wood

These designs are versatile. They are installed not only on the personal plot, if the style allows it, but also on summer terraces, in the barbecue area. Such models are distinguished by a high aesthetic component.

Choose the shape and appearance of the model depending on the goals. For some cases, simple benches without a back are ideal, for others it is better to choose a bench with a back and armrests.

Manufacturing methods and options

Such structures are built in factories. The difficulty lies in the fact that you need to have the tools to create the desired shapes from metal. They are built as a support. Armrests and legs of the structure are made of it. Wood is used for the seat and backrest. It should be a dense wood, which is pre-treated with impregnations that protect against decay:

  • pine - light wood with beautiful texture, color. She only becomes more attractive with age. Disadvantage - easily damaged by mechanical means;
  • acacia - dense hardwood. It is reliable, can be used as the main material in the construction of a shop, however, with prolonged contact with a damp surface, the color of the wood may change. Therefore, it is better to use it only for arranging a seat and backrest;
  • cedar - expensive material that absorbs moisture. It is the best for street construction. Since it does not crack after drying, it is deformed;
  • teak - the high price of timber does not allow many to use it in the construction of outdoor furniture. However, it has many properties: it does not absorb moisture, does not dry out and is not damaged. Over time, it becomes even more durable.

Depending on these parameters, a tree for the benches is selected. However, they also consist of metal. Its choice is just as important for creating a quality and reliable design. All metal parts of the street structure are treated with anti-corrosion agents. The properties of this material and the way it is finished affect the aesthetic component of outdoor furniture.

Therefore, the choice of this material is as important as wood:
  • aluminum - a common option for creating a frame for outdoor furniture. It is easy to process, it can be cleaned, it is resistant to corrosion;
  • steel - pipes, corners, channel bars. It is flexible enough in comparison with other iron alloys, so furniture made from it is very popular. Stainless steel is a durable and reliable material. It is corrosion resistant and lightweight;
  • cast iron - high quality, reliable material. It is used to create stationary structures that must be heavy.

Each outdoor furniture can have a unique design, which depends not only on the choice of materials, but also on the way it is finished:

  • casting - the most common method of metal processing. When using it, you can achieve the creation of a wide variety of shapes, patterns. This method is used only in production;
  • powder finish - gives the metal strength, attractiveness. It is more reliable and more beautiful than ordinary paint, protects surfaces from damage. It is impossible to make such a coating at home;
  • forging - a way thanks to which you can create completely unique drawings, patterns. Wrought iron furniture is considered the most beautiful and reliable.

However, to create outdoor furniture for the garden, you can use old metal objects, for example, a bed. To build such a piece of furniture, you need to leave the bed frame and use wood to make a back, a seat. These models will add coziness and uniqueness to your style.

Convertible benches

Transformer benches are functional structures that are used not only to decorate a personal plot, but also to create a comfortable seating area in it. These models are distinguished by their mobility, they are practical, easy to use - in just a few seconds, by transformation, the bench turns into a comfortable table with two benches. It is comfortable to sit behind it and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.

What designs exist:

  • built from natural wood;
  • made of metal and wood - combined models;
  • assembled from metal.

On personal plots, structures made of wood or combined models are used. They are ordinary without decoration, but very practical. You can make such a table, benches with your own hands.

DIY making

Before you start building a transforming bench, you need to prepare material and tools, draw up a drawing. It can be done using software for design and calculation. You can find them on the Internet or do the calculation yourself.

Choosing a material

For manufacturing, you will need a bar, boards, the choice of breed depends on you. This article describes the pros and cons of wood used for shops. The board should be sanded; it is better to check its moisture content with a moisture meter.

Material calculation according to standard drawing

For assembly you need:

  • 4 beams with a section of 90 * 45 * 1445 mm;
  • 5 bars 90 * 32 * 1480 mm.

To work, you need to prepare the tool that you need. And you will need:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • level;
  • corner;
  • sandpaper for sanding surfaces.

A sander will do the job better, but if you don't have one, you can use paper (320). You will also need screws, bolts, a saw. You also need to purchase paints and varnishes.

Manufacturing steps

  • We make the legs of the structure. To do this, you need to take the bars and cut them 70 cm long. You need to make 8 identical legs. On them, you need to make oblique cuts on both sides in order to obtain the balance of the structure during further installation.
  • A frame is made for the structure. This will require boards that need to be cut into four 40 cm segments and the same number of 170 cm segments. The angles must be made the same.
  • It is necessary to strengthen the frame, for this you will need to nail a wooden beam with a step of 50 cm.Thus, the structure will split and the bench will be protected from deformation.
  • The legs are attached to the seats at a distance of 10 cm from the corners. It is important to make connections of high quality, reliable. It is done with bolts.
  • A rectangle 70 * 170 cm is created from a bar, which will be connected inside with additional material to ensure reliability.
  • All made elements of the transformer are collected. The work is difficult and responsible.
  • You need to cut off two pieces of 40 cm long. They are needed for fastening between the bench and the backboard.
  • We cut off two more beams, 110 cm long. They are used for the back. They are connected with self-tapping screws.
  • The frame is assembled, only then it is sheathed from the outside with wood.

To protect the material from moisture, you need to cover it with a stain, and then a water-repellent varnish. It dries for 36 hours, so the bench cannot be used for several days after work. With proper care, such structures last about 20 years. Over time, the frame can be replaced with metal, which will increase the service life.

Custom benches

These structures are installed not only on personal plots, but also inside the house, in gazebos. The location depends not only on the design, but also on the materials that are used in the assembly of the structure.

Bench in the bath: features

During the construction of baths, only reliable materials will be washed. This is a tree that, under the influence of high temperature and humidity, will not undergo deformation and will not change its color. For such models they take:

  • linden... It is easy to process, does not crack over time, dries quickly and heats up slowly. Minus - the board darkens over time;
  • aspen - has medicinal properties, but with prolonged use it loses its beauty;
  • abashi... This tree has a porous structure, it does not heat up quickly, and retains its original appearance for a long time.

Bath benches are stationary structures. Their location is considered during the design phase of the sauna. They should have a certain height, width, so that a person can comfortably fit on them.

They are built of several types:
  • L-shaped - for paired with an average area;
  • straight lines - mounted in small steam rooms;
  • U-shaped for large rooms.
  • benches are built in the same style. If, for example, it is country, then the shops can be built in combination with metal, or exclusively from wood. Structures made of old furniture or objects will look beautiful. As a support, you can use wheels from a wheelbarrow or ordinary hemp, beautifully carved. Models with carved elements, decorated with soft pillows in bright colors, look attractive. Artificially aged bars, which are used as seats, will add charm, comfort;
  • rustic style - only wood is used, and it can be aged or bars that have been standing in the yard for a long time. They will be the best base for shops. Metal and plastic are not welcomed in this style. Furniture should be massive, solid. You can use decorative ornaments as capes;
  • scandinavian style involves the use of many warm and soft items. Benches are built for the gazebo are large, they are stationary with wide seats, high backs. To make such furniture attractive, soft pillows are added, which are sewn to order according to the size of the furniture.

Rarely, furniture made of stone or iron is installed in gazebos.

Into the hallway: a house with a soul

Arranging a hallway is just as important as choosing furniture for other rooms in the house. After all, this room is a visiting card of any home.

What they pay attention to:

For this room, models are purchased made of different materials:
  • plastic - models are combined with other materials: wood, chipboard or fiberboard. Of them, furniture for hallways is rarely built, only if the interior allows it to fit in. Plastic can have a different color shape. Plastic benches are easy to clean and transport;
  • wood - durable, reliable designs. Due to its dense structure, the tree does not absorb moisture, it does not dry out under the influence of solar radiation. For the manufacture of furniture, coniferous wood, aspen, alder, oak are used. Such models can have a carved pattern on the legs, armrests or headboard. The wood is painted with tinting varnish to preserve the texture of the material;
  • MDF and chipboard - used in the construction of furniture. Such designs are equipped with drawers or it can take up the entire space under the product. This material is used for the construction of furniture in the living room, bedroom. It can have a different color, covered with a laminated film, which increases moisture resistance;
  • forged - not suitable for all hallways. So that it does not overload this room, such structures are built small. They perform only their main function - you can sit comfortably on it. Furniture can be backed or built with beautiful patterned armrests;
  • wicker - beautiful models. They are inferior in strength to their counterparts, but their beauty minimizes this disadvantage. Such structures are built both with and without a box for small items;
  • combined - wood and metal are used. Such designs are practical and reliable. The frame of the structure is built from metal, and the parts on which they sit or rest their back are made of wood.

When choosing benches for a room, you can not be so strict about the material and its properties to withstand sudden temperature changes.

Baby

Children's furniture is built in accordance with the norms established by our government. Therefore, high requirements are imposed on the choice of material, paints, prescribed in SPIPs. For the construction of benches, natural materials or plastic are used, which does not contain harmful impurities.

Types of benches for children, depending on their location:

for the street - wood and metal are used. The legs are made of steel, which is processed to improve their properties, resistance to moisture. Such designs do not have a backrest; rare models may have armrests. The upper part is constructed of wood, and it covers all parts of the metal frame to cover all sharp corners. Such models are decorated with multi-colored paint, which is used to paint all the components of the product;

for kindergartens and playgrounds, benches made of wood are installed. Such designs are most suitable for children. They do not contain harmful substances, there are no sharp corners and joints, about which a child can get injured. In locker rooms, benches can be installed, the height of which does not reach half a meter. They are mobile and easy to move around the room;

plastic structures are mounted for private playgrounds. They differ in a variety of patterns and colors. They can be made in the form of your favorite animals, cartoon characters. The benches are lightweight and reliable. The back can be made in the shape of the sun, caterpillar, butterfly. An integral part is a variety of colors.

Often, such designs can be combined with a table, canopy. If a bench is made for a public playground for children, all the rules set by the government must be considered. For the construction of a children's structure in a private house, you can use plastic models.

Corner bench for garden, home, kitchen

The benches are built from different materials: stone, metal, plastic, wood. Among the variety of shapes and types of benches, corner models look especially interesting. They are compact, but more spacious and beautiful. Many types of corner benches can be designed:

  • corner transforming bench - such a model consists of small straight sections, which, if necessary, can be rearranged, while adjusting the structure to the conditions of another space;
  • on the garden plot, you can find many places that can be used to create a comfortable resting place. A simple corner bench placed against the wall is easy to install and does not require the use of calculation programs. To assemble it, you need to prepare a frame, a tree that will serve as a seat. It is installed near a free wall, which is sheathed with clapboard;
  • corner benches made of natural stone. Such structures are installed on personal plots. They are reliable, lacking a back and decor. Such models are manufactured in factories;
  • corner bench with a table. The design has benches located between the table. It may be slightly larger and taller in size, or have a different color. This will only give the composition a unique look.

Such models are built from wood, rarely when steel can be used as a frame. For beauty, they are decorated with various decorative elements. If these are wooden structures, then as a decor there can be carved elements made on the legs of models, a headboard. If the design is combined, then beautiful forging is done, it can be done on the back or armrests.

With the onset of the summer cottage season, hardworking summer residents rush to the garden. During the cold months, so much work has accumulated that, perhaps, you will not find such a corner in the country or in the garden, where the maximum investment of the gardener's efforts and energy is not required. Weed here, dig up there, water here ... Of course, with such an intense load sometimes you want to sit down and rest for a while. And a garden bench is the simplest solution.

Garden bench - design garden object

In addition to their direct purpose, garden benches today can be safely called a real design object and the main attribute of a good rest in the country or in the garden.

In recent years, the direction of spending time in the country has noticeably changed. If earlier the overwhelming majority of gardeners "worked hard" on their 6 acres to feed themselves and their families, now more and more people prefer to go to the dacha just to relax. That is why the role of the design component of summer cottages has increased. The influence of comfort and aesthetic pleasure from admiring the landscape has expanded. And garden benches, as one of the types of small architectural forms, do an excellent job with the role of a decorator.

I must say that the importance in the design of benches began to be given attention back in the Renaissance. Even in those days, the best palace architects were giving the simplest and most familiar shops exquisite forms. And garden benches have gradually ceased to be just an object for a respite, but turned into a full-fledged design object, which is part of a large beautiful garden.

In order for the recreation area or dining area to emphasize the unique image of your garden, it is important to arrange the garden benches correctly, taking into account the surrounding landscape, relief and the general style of the site.

Garden Bench Styles

The style of garden benches depends on the style of the house. Typically, benches appear in a garden where there is already a main building. This means that the style direction is already present.

  • For a classic garden, benches made of wood with carvings, wrought metal and stone benches with stucco elements are suitable.
  • For a country-style garden, benches made of brutal wood with deliberately rough shapes are suitable.
  • A Japanese or Chinese garden will be decorated with bamboo garden benches.
  • The English style of the garden is emphasized by the combined benches - a metal base and a wooden seat.
  • In a French garden, metal benches with beautiful intricate curves will look good.
  • In a natural-style garden, benches made of stumps and rough boards will be appropriate.
  • Unusual benches in the shape of a cat or a horse (made of wood or forging) will decorate the garden in a vintage style.

Garden benches are a great tool for zoning an area in landscaping. With their help, you can designate the boundaries of a recreation area or garden room, the beginning or end of a green corridor, etc. The garden may include a terrace, dining area, reception area, swimming pool, playground and other functional areas. In order for each of them to be not only comfortable, but also visually stand out, parts of the garden are usually zoned. And garden benches, as one of the types of small architectural forms, do an excellent job with this task.

By their functional purpose, the benches can be divided into:

They are usually placed at the entrance to the house. Therefore, the design and material of the front bench should correspond to the exterior of the main house. For example, if there are forged elements next to the entrance group (for example, a visor over the entrance, grilles for windows or a flower stand), then a forged bench will look more harmonious. It is wiser to choose the style of all forged products in advance. Strictly following the canons of garden design, a single pattern should be traced in all forged products of the garden (from the fence to the trellises). Therefore, everything is thought out at the design stage.

Dining Garden Benches... As a rule, such benches are included in a single dining group, which means that they must correspond to the design and material of the table. Such benches are placed in the barbecue area, in gazebos, on terraces, or where the family likes to dine. This area can look grand and serve as a kind of platform for receiving guests. Or it can be simple and cozy at home. It is in such corners that quiet family gatherings and tea drinking take place.

Garden benches for relaxation... These benches are placed in places where it is pleasant to retire and relax. This can be a secluded corner in the garden or a platform in front of a pond. But the specific location of the bench in this area has its own nuances. When placed correctly, the angle of view provides the observer with the most attractive and beautiful view of the site. In addition, the bench or bench itself becomes a decoration of the garden and an integral part of the landscape.

I must say that rest benches include one more subgroup, which is worth highlighting separately. These are the so-called relaxation benches... They are designed for the most secluded corners, away from any irritants and bystanders. On such a bench, you can even lie down if you want. Soft pillows and with your favorite melody, auto-training or croaking of frogs will help you to relax as much as possible during the heat of summer.

Such small benches are located next to a vegetable garden, flower garden or flower beds. The name speaks for itself. You can relax on them while working in the country. There are no special requirements for the design of "garden" benches. They can be of the simplest form, without decorative frills.

In addition, garden benches are stationary and mobile... The type, material and design of stationary benches are chosen more carefully, since they are located in the garden for a long period, and form (including) the final image of the garden.

Main advantage folding benches are their mobility. Folding benches are indispensable for small gardens. They unfold quickly and easily and are lightweight. The design of these benches is very solid. And although folding benches may not be combined with the design of the garden plot at all, one cannot but admit the fact of their convenience.

As for the external design, the benches can be with or without a backrest, with or without armrests, as well as with pull-out drawers, in which it is convenient to store some necessary things.

A bench is considered comfortable if:

  • Seat width - 50-55 cm
  • Seat height from the ground - 40-50 cm
  • Back height - 40-50 cm
  • Backrest tilt - 15-45 degrees
  • Height of armrests from seat - 15-20 cm

Garden Bench Material

Garden benches are traditionally made from wood, stone, metal, wicker and plastic. The choice of material depends on both personal preference and the exterior of the garden. Recently, in the manufacture of garden furniture, materials have been combined (for example, wood in combination with artistic forging), which makes it possible to most accurately capture the stylistic direction.

Correctly selected furniture always becomes a real decoration of the garden. Otherwise (like a super-modern plastic garden bench) it will look out of place next to a country-style home.

Wood - the most popular material for making benches. At all times, the tree looked both beautiful and modern. Harmlessness and durability are the main criteria for choosing this material.

The most durable type of wood is teak. It was this material that was used even in the construction of ships. Therefore, for open spaces with constant exposure to external factors, it is better to purchase teak garden benches. With proper care, they will serve you for years to come. Alternative options are oak, pine, larch, hazel.

Even deliberate rudeness looks original and stylish.

Metal. The popularity of metal garden benches is understandable. Metal products are practical, durable and, with proper care, are resistant to precipitation. This group includes graceful forged benches, lightweight aluminum and heavy cast iron. Each of these types has a number of advantages and is suitable for its tasks.

Aluminum, contrary to popular belief, a very durable material. It does not require special care and does not corrode. Aluminum garden benches retain their original appearance for a very long time, and thanks to their various designs, they are suitable for different recreation areas.

Cast iron garden benches... Some parks still have ancient cast-iron benches made more than a hundred years ago. It is a very durable, heavy and quite expensive material. Modern cast iron benches are available with various tints and anti-corrosion impregnations, which can significantly increase the service life. These benches are ideal for parks, squares and large gardens.

This refers to products made of steel by artistic forging. In fact, only a specialist can tell the difference between cast iron and forging. Without going into the details of the chemical composition, we can say that wrought iron garden benches are always delicate graceful lines that give any suburban area a sophisticated look. In combination with other elements of the exterior, a wrought iron bench can literally transform a garden. I must say that forged products can be made in any style.

Stone benches... Stone benches look impressive and monumental. The most advantageous stone benches look in a spacious garden. Despite the fact that they are not very comfortable and not intended for extended rest, stone garden benches are still quite popular. They give the garden a special flavor and hint at the respectability of the owners. The inconvenience problem can be easily solved by placing soft pillows on the bench. In some cases, stone benches are even cheaper than wooden ones.

Plastic. The advent of plastic furniture made a real revolution just a few decades ago. She was especially fond of the owners of country houses. The advantages are obvious - plastic furniture is cheap and practical. It can be left outside and is varied in color and shape. In addition, plastic furniture is lightweight, which allows it to be moved to different parts of the garden. If the exterior of your house is modern, plastic garden benches and chairs will look quite harmonious.

Wicker benches graceful, sweet, airy, light, but short-lived. They will not last long even if they stand under a canopy. This primarily applies to products made from willow vines. Benches covered with a special varnish will last longer. And yet, such garden furniture has a lot of fans. A corner with a wicker bench immediately resembles a French garden or a view of the seaside.

In recent years, garden rattan benches... This material is much stronger than willow. This means that such furniture serves much longer. Unfortunately, rattan does not grow in our latitudes, and export from hot countries is expensive. Furniture manufacturers offer artificial rattan products. It is stronger and lasts longer, as it is not afraid of either the scorching sun or rain.

Also, recently it is gaining popularity hularo furniture - synthetic rattan. This material on the basis of rubber and other artificial additives is in no way inferior in external characteristics to natural ones. And in some respects it even surpasses natural rattan. Hularo wicker benches do not fade and are not afraid of large temperature drops. Such furniture is pleasant to the touch and very easy to clean - it can be washed directly from the hose. In addition, manufacturers offer different colors, textures and weaving patterns. It's no wonder that hularo wicker benches are becoming more popular every year.

Arch with a bench is a great solution for giving

This is almost a complete resting corner. Now on sale there are models of arches or trellises made of metal, wood or plastic. A wrought-iron arch with a bench has always been an attribute of grace and aristocracy. On such a bench, you can not only retire surrounded by climbing plants, but also make a romantic date. To decorate such an arch, climbing grapes, clematis, kampsis and climbing rose are well suited.

No one will argue that a bench is just a necessary attribute for any suburban area. There are a great many types of garden benches, but in this article we will analyze a very simple classic version of a bench designed for 2 people, which is not difficult to do with your own hands. The bench should turn out to be strong and not heavy, it can be easily carried by two of us to any place on the site.

Below you will find a working 3D model of this bench, which can be rotated in all directions, as well as drawings of the parts of the bench from which it will be assembled.

After all the elements of the future garden bench are sawn and planed, you can start assembling with your own hands. And below are her isometric drawings with dimensions.

BY SIZE:
I adapted the model of this bench to the dimensions that are often found in lumber at our sawmills, but this nasty but is always present. When preparing parts, rely on the main (overall) dimensions, because non-planed material can have a spread of up to 5-8 mm. Accordingly, you will have to make adjustments to the dimensions of your design.

Assembling a garden bench

  1. We collect the sidewalls of the bench.
    We drill holes for threaded connections. You can make a sample in the wood with a special drill if you want to sink the caps and nuts. To make it easier to work, you can first fix the entire structure of the sidewall of the bench with clamps or thin nails (self-tapping screws).
  2. We fix the sidewall structure with screws and nuts (a washer should be placed under the bolt head and nut). Do not overtighten immediately, you may have to move the entire structure for better stability.
  3. We carry out the same operation with the second sidewall.
  4. Connect the two sides of the bench with the spacer-strength element (below).
    Fix it with large self-tapping screws with a turnkey head.
  5. Fasten the seat and back elements with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver. The gap according to the drawing between the boards is 5 mm (use, for example, nails or screws of the appropriate thickness as a spacer).
  6. Tighten all screw connections.
  7. Cover all the recessed caps of the screws securing the seat and back of the bench with wood putty.
  8. Sand all wood surfaces to avoid splintering and to smooth the putty. All outer corners can be rounded.
  9. Apply a protective coating or paint to all surfaces in two coats with intermediate drying.
  10. Voila! Once dry, the DIY garden bench is ready for installation.
  • Sizes of lumber are nominal. When buying boards, add at least 10% to the total footage for possible losses.
  • For economical use of sawn timber, start sawing boards from the longest pieces.
  • The width of the garden bench can be made at your discretion, just keep in mind that a large width will contribute to the sagging of the seat boards under the body's weight and you will have to strengthen the structure.
  • Whether to put the lower board of the bench back is up to you.
  • To minimize accidental bruising and injury, file or cut off any sharp corners of the seat and backrest.
  • If timber of natural moisture (not dried) is used for the manufacture of a garden bench, then it is possible to change the dimensions and gaps during drying and it is better not to varnish it until the wood is completely dry.

Examples of similar garden benches

A similar bench with one-board back relief. As an option to reduce weight.

And here is a version of a bench with a rear shelf on the back. Moreover, the author made the right angle on the backrest amplifiers at the top, and the shelf turned out to be in the correct plane.

The same version with a rear shelf on the back. But here the author did not make the right angle, and the shelf turned out to be littered.
Note that here, as well, 4 boards are used on the seat, and 3. The elements of the bench are varnished.

In the photo below, you see a whole ensemble of three benches. Quite a good idea for a resting corner on the site. Only now it seems to me that the long bench should have reinforced the seat in the middle, otherwise there is a deflection, which I wrote about above.

Thanks for your attention, I was glad if I helped someone. Post your versions of the made garden benches below in the comments or send me an email.

You can read about how to make a large stationary and heavy garden bench in another article: "Garden bench with a back and armrests", drawings and dimensions are attached.

If you want to purchase a ready-made garden bench, we advise you to contact a trusted furniture seller Kupistol, there is a wide range for every taste and wallet.

Most owners of suburban areas, whether it be a house or a summer cottage, want to know how garden plots are made, and this is not surprising. You now have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with several options, where drawings and photos of wooden structures are attached. Such furniture can be made portable or stationary, but if you do not use it in the cold season, then the second option is useless for you.

Family fun on a garden bench

What are garden benches

Relaxation rocking bench

First of all, let's understand the meaning of this word. In different dictionaries of the Russian language, it is defined as a device for seating for several people and at the same time it can be with or without a back. Synonyms include definitions such as bench, bench, bench, furniture. But the bench, it is more considered as a low footrest. In our case, this is garden furniture, which has a backrest for support.

Such designs differ not only in size - they also differ in other parameters, such as:

  1. product configuration - standard, non-standard;
  2. armrests - available, not available;
  3. design - with wood carvings or strict straight lines.

Chic woodcarving design

Few people can make such furniture as in the photo above - it is not enough to be an ordinary carpenter or even a cabinetmaker. This is already the art of wood carving, which requires an artist's mindset and, of course, practical skills. But every second has the opportunity to make the simplest garden benches, if tools and materials are available.

Materials for assembling a garden bench

Edged polished larch board

The main material for garden benches is wood, but it is absorbent, which is highly undesirable for outdoor products. Of course, antiseptics such as "Antignil", Neomid "," Wood doctor ", etc. are used to protect against street moisture, but it is better if the lumber itself belongs to the category of moisture resistant. Therefore, the highest quality garden furniture is made from oak and larch.

In addition, wood exposed to atmospheric conditions (rain, snow, fog, hail, frost, ice, UV radiation (sun rays), wind) is coated with alkyd-urethane varnishes. You can use such brands as "Rogneda Eurotex", "Varagan Premium Spar Urethan", "Dufa Retail", "Tikkurila Unica Super", etc. Such compounds will not only protect the wood from atmospheric processes, but also from impacts and scratches - it is possible , due to the increased wear resistance of the coating. You cannot expect such an effect from paints.

Stock up on the following materials:

  • polished edged board with a thickness of 40-50 mm for a seat of any width;
  • polished edged board with a thickness of 30-40 mm for a back of any width;
  • planed edged board 40 × 70 mm or 50 × 100 mm for frame assembly;
  • timber 100 × 100 mm for the frame (not always used);
  • bar 70 × 70 mm for the frame and lintels;
  • antiseptic (liquid preparation);
  • paints and varnishes;
  • metal fasteners: wood screws, bolts with nuts and washers, steel corners.

Note. In some cases, for making a garden bench with their own hands, they can even use a log, dissolving it lengthwise into two equal parts. Also among the lumber there may be pallets - these are excellent blanks for assembling simple furniture.

Requirements for the quality of lumber

Chamber method of drying wood

The moisture content of lumber plays an important role in determining the quality of products and this is not without reason, because the structure assembled from a wet board will dry out in the future. Therefore, in order to choose the most suitable board (timber or bar), you should pay attention to the instructions of GOST 20850-84, where dry wood is considered to be a board with 12% moisture, and the natural (outdoor) state implies 15-20%.

Drying lumber naturally

In our case, both the first and second indicators of the State Standard are suitable, since such furniture is intended for outdoor use. But it will be quite normal if you purchase very dry boards - there are no knots here that can be critically affected by the swelling of the lumber when wet.

It is important to pay attention to the presence of stains on the boards: if there are black stains there, this indicates that the wood is infected with fungal mold. But if you see blue spots, then you can be sure that the drying was carried out without ventilation and the board was worn out. The presence of blackness and blueness indicates an irreparable defect and such products should not be purchased. Also check the boards for cracks and falling knots - they should not be on high-quality workpieces.

Garden Bench Assembly Tools

The minimum set of carpentry tools

We live in a time of rapid development of technical progress, therefore, it is not at all necessary to use a minimum set of carpentry tools for work. That is, the purpose may remain the same, but the functionality and processing speed will certainly increase significantly!

What comes in handy from the carpentry tool:

  • hand-held (stationary) circular saw and / or electric jigsaw;
  • electric drill and / or screwdriver;
  • a set of drills, nozzles and crown cutters for wood;
  • manual router with a set of cutters (not always needed);
  • disc or belt sander (not always needed);
  • chainsaw (for large workpieces such as a bar or log);
  • locksmith wrenches (ring, socket, open-end);
  • an ax for working with logs;
  • tape measure, building corner, level, pencil, paint brush.

Some options for making wooden benches

To make a garden bench with your own hands, of course, you will need drawings and photos of finished structures so that you can imagine the end result. All of the furniture examples below are assembled from wood with a small amount of metal hardware.

There are average indicators of the dimensions of such products, therefore, in order to create conditions for a comfortable stay, the following indicators should be adhered to:

  1. bench seat height - 400-500 mm;
  2. bench seat width - 500-550 mm;
  3. bench and back length - 1000-1900 mm;
  4. back height - 350-500 mm;
  5. back width - at your discretion.

Option number 1 - a simple bench made of boards

Dimensional drawings

A sketch with the name of the parts: 1) front legs, 2) rear legs, 3) longitudinal drawers, 4) side drawers, 5) boards for the back and seat, 6) furniture dowel 80 mm long, 7) furniture dowel 40 mm long, 8 ) stiffening gussets

At this stage, after selecting the necessary materials and tools, you need to measure each workpiece to make sure that its dimensions are sufficient for the manufacture of this or that part. You probably understand that under constant loads, the transverse joining of parts is extremely undesirable and even unsafe for a person under whom such furniture will break.

The joints of the main lumber are possible only on the harness, if a central pair of legs is provided there. For example, a bench will have 1990 mm and this length can be obtained by connecting two boards on the jumper of the central pair of legs. But for such an operation, it is necessary that both fragments of the board be of the same thickness and width, then, perhaps, the butt seam, with proper processing, will not even be noticeable.

Now you need to cut all the parts from the blanks according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing, or according to your own parameters, since there may be other needs at the site of your summer cottage. All connections are made using dowels, screws and bolts with nuts and washers (dowels, by the way, can also be replaced with self-tapping screws). But when choosing fasteners, you need to take into account the possible load on the bench. If children use it, then the nodes can be fixed with self-tapping screws and / or nails, but for a more serious load it is better to use bolts with nuts and washers.

The assembly should start from the frame, or rather from the legs, of which there will be two or three pairs, depending on the length of the bench and if it is designed for two persons (meter), then the third pair is not needed. I would like to draw your attention to the stiffness of the legs.

Usually these are two vertical boards or two beams - one to the top of the back, and the other to the bottom of the bench. There are also two jumpers: the lower one connects the posts in the middle of the short riser, and the upper one forms the basis for fastening the boards to the seat. In order for such an assembly never to loosen, kerchiefs should be screwed under the lower and / or under the upper jumper - these are triangles from the same profile from which the frame is made.

All nodes are labeled in the order of assembly

Step-by-step instructions for assembling all the units (check the picture):

  • Frame shaping. Two vertical posts (No. 1 and No. 2) are connected with transverse jumpers (No. 7).
  • Strengthening rigidity. After that, in the same way, they collect another pair of legs (or two more pairs, if the bench is designed for three points of support), strengthen and connect them. To do this, use additional transverse jumpers (No. 4 and No. 5), and all pairs are connected together with a longitudinal bar or board (No. 6).
  • Seat and backrest assembly. For this operation, you will need polished bars or boards - they are fixed to the frame of the structure (No. 3).

Moisture protection

Wood processing with antiseptics and varnishes

If you want the bench on your site to serve for many years, it must be treated with antiseptics and / or alkyd-urethane varnishes, which were mentioned in the "Materials for assembling a garden bench" section.

Option number 2 - a bench with a log back

Thick boards and logs are used for manufacturing

Today, more and more people are looking back into the past and in this regard, styles such as Russian and English country music or French are in demand in the interior. All this can be combined under a common name in the "rustic style" group. You can look at successful homemade products, photos of making garden benches from logs with your own hands are located at the top and bottom of this paragraph.

Log bench with log table

But how to make a bench so that it matches this design, because the interior has nothing to do with it - it is the exterior. Nevertheless, it is possible to adhere to this direction on a personal plot, especially since in unity with nature it should turn out to be very attractive. In this case, you can use not only logs, but also unedged boards, only you need to first get rid of the wane.

But it is advisable to start from the base, that is, an impromptu one should be built on the ground, since you are unlikely to be able to remove such a bench indoors or under a canopy at the end of the summer season - it is too bulky and heavy. As a foundation, you can make shallow pits of 7-10 cm each, fill it with a layer of sand 5-8 cm, tamp it, and cover it with bricks on top (length 50-51 cm, for two bricks). The standard length or solid brick is 250 mm, width -120 mm, thickness -65 mm. This is quite enough to raise the structure a few centimeters above the ground, saving it from water and no concrete is needed.

A drawing of a very simple but very beautiful bench made of logs

Pay attention to the drawing located above - you can see that the length of the bench is two and a half meters and 5-6 people can freely accommodate there. Of course, for a 50 mm board this is too much load, but for a half of a log, where the radius is 100-150 mm, it is not at all difficult to withstand such a weight.

On the left - a cut for the base, on the right - half a log for a bench

The legs, in the direct sense of the word, do not have to be assembled and installed here - their function will be performed by two logs installed on bricks (foundation) in a horizontal position. To prevent such stands from rolling, you need to make the bottom flat, as shown in the drawing above, by cutting off part of the log with a chainsaw. In this case, it will be necessary to calculate these supports so that they lie strictly horizontally and are on the same level with each other. Grooves are made on the workpiece for the bench, into which the rounded supports will then sit - this is also shown in the drawing.

Note. If you do not find logs thick enough for the final seat height to be 40-50 cm, then you can attach thinner ones to the supports from thick logs. In the end, it can turn out to be even more attractive.

Now let's talk about the back - it can be straight or inclined, it all depends on how you install the stop profiles - strictly vertically or at a slope. In the first case, two round timber of ø80-100 mm are suitable as thrust profiles - they will need to be screwed to the horizontally lying logs that function as legs and to a half of the log, that is, to the seat. To create rigidity, the lower parts of these racks are cut lengthwise to the height of the bench. For fixing, it is best to use not ordinary long self-tapping screws, but anchor bolts, for example, for an anchor with a section of 10 mm, they drill mounting holes ø6 mm or for a section of 12-14 mm, a hole will be needed with ø8-10 mm.

For an inclined backrest, a 40 × 70 or 50 × 100 mm board or a round timber ø100-120 mm is used as racks. If it is still round timber, then in the places of abutment to the supports (legs) and to the bench, you need to make cuts to create a plane for rigidity. But when using a 40 × 70 mm board, you can even select the grooves in the horizontally lying logs with a router in order to hammer these stops there. The groove must be coated with wood glue or PVA, and also screw the board to the bench.

The back, both on strictly vertical and inclined stops, is fixed according to the same principle as the seat - they select the landing grooves in the half of the log, and, having smeared them with glue, screw them with self-tapping screws. At the end of the assembly, the structure is treated with an antiseptic and / or moisture-repellent paints and varnishes such as alkyd-urethane varnishes. Below is a video where the craftsman tells how he made a bench from logs.

Option number 3 - a semicircular bench in the garden

Semicircular bench in the garden

It may seem to you that this is a complex structure and its independent construction is beyond your power, but this is only at first glance. It is noteworthy that in this case, for such a structure, a rather monotonous material will be needed, this is a 40 × 70 mm, 50 × 100 mm board and a 100 × 100 mm bar. And, of course, fastening materials.

Assembling the semicircular frame for the seat

The top photo shows how the frame is assembled and it's very simple: first, cut off five pieces of boards of the same length, for example by a meter. Then, from four pieces, assemble two small meter frames using jumpers 40-45 cm long (three jumpers for each frame). Then another frame will have to be assembled between them in the middle, joining the side boards at an angle. Here it is advisable to use a board of 50 × 100 mm, and make fasteners with self-tapping screws.

In total, you need 4 pairs of legs (8 pieces)

Considering that the generally accepted height of a bench installed in the garden is about 40-50 cm, then for the legs you will have to cut eight pieces of timber 400-450 mm long.

The legs are screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws

The legs are screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws, but so that the beam in the upper part turns out flush with the frame, a board is placed for leveling, as shown in the photo.

When all the legs are screwed on, proceed with the installation of the seat

When all the legs are screwed on, the frame is turned over to its normal position and the seat is installed. Note that the sheathing starts from the outer edge of the middle frame to guide the 40x70mm boards. In order not to mess around for a long time, you can immediately fasten several boards and cut off the excess with a circular right at the installation site. But you can also put a mark on each board by drawing a pencil from below. It is advisable to leave a small blockage between the boards - it will be more beautiful this way.

Backrests are attached to the legs and frame

Fastening the backrest to the supports

The backrests are first attached to the legs (to the side of the timber), and then to the frame using reinforced steel corners. When all the inclined stops are exposed, one or two 40 × 70 mm boards are screwed to them along the top as a backrest. At the end of the assembly, the structure is treated with an antiseptic and / or paints and varnishes.

Option number 4 - garden bench with a back from old pallets

Corner garden bench from old pallets

Straight garden bench from old pallets

I think that to get such a garden bench with a back, made, drawings are not needed. Here, the usual block assembly takes place using self-tapping screws, where the size of the structure depends on the geometric parameters of the block.

Standard pallet 1000 × 1200 mm

There are two types of pallets, ours (produced in the countries of the former USSR) and European. Our standard perimeter is 1000 × 1200 mm, and for Euro pallets it is 800 × 1200 mm. But those experts who have long been engaged in the manufacture of furniture from such materials, recommend European stands, since the board on them is planed, therefore, less time is spent on grinding.

Soft garden corner made of old pallets

You can even arrange a rest in the garden on soft benches; for this, the structure is temporarily covered with pillows, which can always be removed in case of bad weather.

Wood processing in this case is no different from other options, that is, it is covered with an antiseptic and / or paints and varnishes.

Conclusion

If you want, you can choose one of four options for making a garden bench with a hand-made back. You can also use the drawings given in the article, but if necessary, change the dimensions in accordance with a specific need, that is, focusing on the conditions of the site.
