Features of the choice of pallets

The final version will depend on the quality of the pallet; its choice should be taken with due attention. To do this, you need to know that under the general name there are several classifications that differ not only in size, but also in condition and appearance. Basic rules for choosing pallets:

  • structures must be intact, without cracks and signs of decay of the boards;
  • pallet marking:
    1. IPPC means that the wood has been processed in accordance with international safety standards;
    2. NT and EPAL - processing was carried out under the influence of high temperatures;

You should know this! Grinding is carried out in a respirator and goggles, and it is also necessary to organize ventilation.

If for subsequent work not whole pallets are needed, but individual elements, they are disassembled and sorted by size. It is advisable to treat the boards with a special compound at this time, it is especially recommended to do this if the products will be on the street. Sawed

Many people perceive do-it-yourself pallet furniture as a product, but this is not always true, as other styles can be used. Photos and videos are provided below, and drawings and assembly diagrams, with which you can make designs of tables, chairs, beds, and the like, are hardly needed, since everything is based on imagination. However, stay on this page and see for yourself the veracity of my words.

Pallet bed

We use pallets and not only for loft style

Provence style pallet kitchen

There are several factors in the popularity of pallet furniture, and they all justify themselves:

  • Widespread availability of material. In many local newspapers you can find advertisements for the sale of pallets, and their cost usually does not exceed 30 rubles. a piece. In addition, some sellers will be happy if you collect these pallets from them for free, saving the store staff the hassle of cleaning up the trash. If you wish, you can order new pallets - their cost reaches 200 rubles. - agree that for high-quality wood this is an acceptable and even low price.
  • Easy to assemble furniture. To assemble any furniture from such materials, it is enough to be able to use a hammer, screwdriver and a hacksaw (jigsaw). In general, the basic skills of a carpenter will suffice.
  • The practicality of the finished product. We can say that in the manufacture of furniture from pallets, universal possibilities open up. That is, it can have a wide variety of functions: chairs, stools, tables, coasters, beds, kitchen and garden nooks, etc. In addition, it does not require any special care or special detergents and / or cleaning agents.

Japanese minimalist terrace

  • Styles. Of course, the bulk of the ideas are embodied in the loft style - this is simple and somehow more familiar. But if you paint the furniture made from pallets in pastel colors, then it will perfectly fit into the interior in the Provence style. In addition, these products will add variety to Japanese minimalist designs.
  • Environmental friendliness of the material. Since all pallets are made from natural solid wood, they are absolutely harmless to human health. Moreover, they may not be an allergen.

Normal pallet and Euro pallet in comparison

A typical construction pallet has a perimeter of 1000xxx1200 mm as standard

An ordinary construction pallet or pallet, according to the standard established by GOST 9078-84, has dimensions of 1000 × 1200 mm or 1.2 m2 of the total area around the perimeter. Basically, such stands are used for transportation and storage (storage) of building materials in packaging: bags, bags and without it: bricks, blocks, gypsum board, gypsum board, OSB, plywood, slate, etc. According to the aforementioned GOST, one pallet should not withstand less than a ton of weight, so they are produced based on this indicator.

The pallet assembly is mainly made from softwood such as pine, yew, juniper, larch. Such rocks are easily processed, but at the same time they have high mechanical strength and resistance to moisture (they do not rot so quickly). All small parts, no matter what the entire pallet is made of, are assembled from juniper, as the densest coniferous wood. To date, the need for manual assembly of such stands has practically disappeared - this is entirely done on automatic equipment.

Attention! If the pallet has a bluish tint, then this indicates that it was collected from raw wood, therefore, its quality leaves much to be desired. This material is not suitable for assembling furniture.

A typical construction Euro pallet has a perimeter of 800xxx1200 mm as standard

Also, in all post-Soviet countries, wooden euro pallets are widely used, the dimensions of which are somewhat smaller - 800 × 1200 mm along the perimeter and 0.96 m2 of area, respectively. As you know, European standards have very high requirements and they also apply to pallets. So, the wood from which the European stand is made undergoes phytosanitary treatment, which is better known in our country as disinfection. This not only protects people from the possible transfer of various bacteria, but also the wood itself from pests, that is, the drug acts as an antiseptic or some kind of bactericidal substance.

Note. Those craftsmen who have been assembling furniture from pallets for a long time recommend using Euro pallets. The fact is that only light grinding is needed there, since the board used for the stand has already been processed on the machines.

How to handle pallets

Sanding the pallet "turtle"

Both ordinary and European pallets will have to be processed before making various furniture from them. This process consists of five main steps and below is a step-by-step instruction for the sequence of such actions:

  • Since something can only be made from pure material, then, first of all, the pallets should be cleaned of dust, dirt and, possibly, grease stains. Used stands are never clean.
  • Even Euro pallets, despite the pretreatment, are not perfectly sanded. Therefore, in order to avoid splinters and / or snags during the operation of finished furniture, it is necessary to grind not only the board, but also the frame bars. However, if you will use the entire stand, then only lateral and horizontal grinding of the structure is enough. If the volume of grinding is small, then it can be done manually using sandpaper, otherwise you will need power tools such as a drill or grinder with attachments or a professional belt or disc grinder.
  • After assembling the desired product, it is primed - this allows the wood to increase its water-repellent properties and save on painting. In cases where the furniture is intended exclusively for indoor use, oily primers are sufficient. If it is intended to be used outdoors, for example, in a country house, then acrylic or silicone primers will be needed, which have good moisture-resistant characteristics.
  • It is advisable to open the finished furniture with any paints. The wood itself will darken, but after painting it does not threaten it.
  • Even if you have painted the finished furniture in the color you need, then varnishing will not be unnecessary. If the paint was not applied, then varnishing is necessary for 100%.

What tools and materials will be needed to assemble furniture

Carpentry tools set

As you can imagine, one hammer and a hacksaw for wood will not be enough to assemble any table or chair. Below is a suggested set that you might need for this job:

  • a hacksaw for wood (hand circular saw or jigsaw);
  • nail pry or pincers for disassembly;
  • bench hammer;
  • a drill with a set of drills and nozzles and / or a screwdriver;
  • power tool for grinding wood;
  • paint brush;
  • building level long (from 70 cm and more);
  • metric tape measure, pencil or marker;
  • protective equipment: respirator, goggles, gloves.

From the materials you should purchase:

  • wood varnish (oil, resin, alkyd, alcohol, epoxy, acrylic, etc.);
  • primer for wood;
  • paints and varnishes;
  • nails, screws, bolts with nuts and washers (not always needed).

Attention! Painting work should be carried out only in a well-ventilated area, and even better outdoors.

A linen closet can be assembled from pallets, and not only of an open type. A thin plank is perfect for doors and if you leave a small gap between the panels, the door will look like a horizontal blind. But the options with shelves are generally endless. They can be adapted for crockery, flowerpots, books, shoes, and so on. In addition, they can be both mounted and floor-standing.

Cottage and garden furniture

Convenient mobile table for giving

In a country house, you can assemble anything you want, but mostly these are hard or soft nooks for relaxation, tables, sun loungers, armchairs and stools. In fact, do-it-yourself garden furniture made of pallets (you see a few photos above) is no different from similar structures for a room. But here the factor of the influence of moisture is taken into account, for example, a table or an entire corner can remain outside during rain, so the wood is treated with water-repellent primers (silicone, acrylic).

Practical lessons

Now we will look at how do-it-yourself pallet furniture is made. You will not need drawings and assembly diagrams here, since the master classes are accompanied by photo and video materials.

Master class on assembling a coffee table

We should have a coffee table like this.

If you put a coffee table on wheels, it will be very convenient for its operation, especially if it is in the bedroom (at any time you can move it or move it). Below you will find step by step instructions on how to make it.

For this you need:

  • pallet (ordinary or European);
  • clamps (ropes can be used);
  • a drill with a set of drills and nozzles (you can use a screwdriver);
  • a petal brush for a drill or a "turtle" for a grinder for polishing wood;
  • nail puller;
  • locksmith's hammer;
  • paint brush;
  • wheels (4 pieces);
  • glue for wood or PVA;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • laundry soap (optional);
  • colorless varnish.

The pallet must be disassembled into its constituent elements

For clarity, you can number all the steps for assembling a coffee table and then you will definitely not get confused in your actions. So, let's begin:

  • We clean the pallet from dirt. To do this, you can use a metal brush, or a similar attachment for a drill or grinder.
  • We disassemble the structure into its constituent elements, trying not to damage the board and frame bars.
  • Gently pull out all the remaining nails. We use a nail pull and a hammer for this.

Assembling table tops from pallet boards

After disassembling, we will have free boards that need to be sanded, and bars from which we assemble the tabletop. In this case, the board can be rolled tightly, or you can leave small gaps for beauty.

We fix the glued connecting elements with clamps

  • We set the base of the table, as in the top photo, on wood glue or PVA, nail it down or fasten it with self-tapping screws, and then, for fidelity, tighten it with clamps for the night.
  • We open the frame in the place where the wheels (or the whole whole) will be with colorless varnish.
  • When the varnish is dry, mark the points for self-tapping screws through the mounting holes of the mounting part of the wheel.
  • To prevent the block from splitting, we drill holes in the marked places for the screws, the diameter of which should be 1.5-2 mm less than the diameter of the screw.
  • For ease of entry of the self-tapping screw, the hole can be rubbed with soap or a drop of detergent.
  • We fasten the wheels to the tabletop frame through the mounting holes.
  • We open the entire table with a colorless varnish (it is possible with a stain) and let it dry.
  • We use the table for its intended purpose.

Assembling the bedside table

Plain construction pallet

Now let's see how to make an original bedroom bedside table from building pallets. I will say right away that the carpentry tools here are the same as for the coffee table, so let's pay attention only to the materials. You will need:

  • a sheet of ordinary or moisture-resistant plywood with a thickness of 4-6 mm;
  • satin wood paint (to enlighten the structure);
  • wood glue or PVA;
  • nails, screws;
  • furniture edge (optional).

Sketch of a frame with sidewalls

Assembling furniture from pallets with our own hands, which in this case is a bedside table, we will also consider step by step using photos and videos:

First you need to draw a sketch of the bedside table or download it on the Internet so that you have a clear idea of what you will do in the future.

The pallet is disassembled and all remaining nails are carefully pulled out of it.

  • As always, it all starts with cleaning the dry stand from dust and dirt with a metal brush or a nozzle, just not very hard, so as not to mutilate the boards.
  • Carefully disassemble the pallet and pull out all the remaining nails.
  • Now we collect the frame from the bars. These are two identical rectangular quadrangles, fastened with self-tapping screws and pre-planted on wood glue or PVA.
  • We cut the boards for the table top so that it is slightly larger in area than the bedside table itself, as well as boards for the sidewalls and the back wall.
  • Before assembling the table top, sides and back wall, carefully grind the board.

Bedside table assembly diagram. Guides marked in blue

  • On one of the assembled quadrangular frames, we fasten the tabletop with nails or screws.
  • We attach the sidewalls and the back wall to the two previously assembled frames. They are assembled from boards, although plywood can also be used for the back wall - a large piece will still remain from the sheet.
  • We make the guides (highlighted in blue) from pieces of plywood - the shoe will easily slide along it.

Shuflya assembly

  • We make the drawer box from the boards that are still left, and the bottom from a piece of plywood. So that it does not fall out during operation, we coat it with glue at the junction points and immediately punch it with small nails (20 mm is enough). For fidelity, you can tighten it with clamps at night.
  • We fasten the furniture handle to the drawer.

We make the shelf from pallet boards

We also make the shelf from boards, which we carefully grind beforehand to avoid splinters and snags.
We open the entire bedside table with satin paint, and cover it with colorless varnish on top.

Now our product can be used

After the paint and varnish materials have dried, we put our product into operation.

Pallet bed

Painted pallet bed

To assemble this structure, a large amount of material will be required, since the bed is assembled from two rows of pallets, which are installed one on top of the other. However, lovers of Japanese minimalism can save money, since only one row is enough to execute an idea in this style.

For a baby bed with dimensions 1600 × 1200 mm, only four Euro pallets are needed

To assemble a baby bed, only one pallet is enough wide, therefore, a total of four pieces are needed. That is, the overall dimensions in terms of area will be 1600 mm in length (two 800 mm each) and 1200 mm in width (a euro pallet across). Two rows of pallets stacked on top of each other meet these requirements.

Adult square bed 2000 × 2000 mm

To assemble a bed from pallets, you will need similar tools and materials that we used for the coffee table or nightstand. The assembly itself is very easy here - the pallets are stacked one on top of the other and fastened together with nails or self-tapping screws. The top row of pallets must be sanded, but you can still cover it with a thin 6 mm plywood sheet. If desired, the backrests can be made from the same pallets to support the pillows.

To paint the bed, it is advisable not to use any nitro-enamels and, in general, any paints or varnishes with a pungent odor. In this case, water-based paints and varnishes are best suited, or water-dispersed paints and varnishes. Do not forget that the smell may not be heard in the daytime (you move and change your location), but after a night of sleep on a painted product in the morning you may have a headache. For asthmatics and people with allergies, such a factor can generally result in a real health problem. Be careful!

  • Easy to clean. This is especially true for sofas and armchairs, where the function of soft upholstery is performed by pillows attached to strings.
  • It is lightweight and can be quickly dismantled. If desired, furniture can be easily moved from a closed room to a terrace or vice versa.
  • The cost of pallet armchairs and sofas is much lower than standard pieces, even taking into account fittings and decorative finishes.

Examples of an interesting interior, where pallets are used as the basis of furniture, are shown in the photo below:

Attention! Pallets come in two sizes: standard (120/100/12 cm) and euro (120/80/12 cm). They order new or used copies on construction portals, especially resourceful ones come across manufacturers who give unnecessary containers for a penny. Even buying new pallets from the store won't hit your budget.

Casket of original ideas

Creative thinking helps to create from pallets not only standard tables, but also all kinds of wardrobes, sofas, shoe racks, flowers, wine and other pieces of furniture necessary in everyday life. The original ideas proposed below will help you choose an interesting option for your own interior.

Coffee tables

One of the simplest and most popular ways to adapt a pallet as an interior detail is to transform it into a coffee or coffee table. An uncomplicated low model can be made by any beginner in the art of carpentry. To assemble a full-fledged piece of furniture, you will need tools and accessories.

If you want to preserve the natural basis in the interior as much as possible, it is enough to sand and varnish furniture from pallets. This will protect household members from unnecessary splinters, and the piece of furniture itself from premature damage. The following modifications will radically change the design of the pallet table:

  • covering with bright paint;
  • adding thick glass to the countertop;
  • installation of wheels for mobility;
  • registration of free space with drawers with original handles.

In addition to miniature coffee tables, dining or writing tables are successfully created from pallets. The first step is to lengthen the legs. Further, at your discretion - blocks for storing books or drawers with metal legs. To facilitate the movement of the dining table to different areas of the room, its design with wheels will help. The photo gallery clearly demonstrates a wide range of pallet applications for the formation of furniture:

Sofas and armchairs

The idea of making a sofa out of pallets is not inferior in popularity. Since this piece of furniture is a priori soft, decorative pillows are a must-have accessory. It is especially practical to install a similar specimen from pallets in places with a high risk of contamination - a dining room or kitchen. The removable cushions are easy to wash, and the frame itself is easy to clean.

Standard pallet sizes do not give a wide field of imagination for furniture modeling, but still, individual parameters are adjusted at the discretion of the master:

  • the height of the sofa as a whole;
  • back height;
  • the presence or absence of handrails, their sizes.

The armchairs have little difference from the sofa, except for the width. Furniture is used for indoor use and is often installed outdoors. The original color will help to bring zest to the interior design. It can be one bright color or a harmonious combination.

Another design option is to leave the furniture in its original color, having opened it with varnish, but choose a bright decor as pillows.

In addition to the standard sofa, a corner model is often chosen for spacious living rooms. By equipping armchairs and sofas with drawers, you will get additional storage space for your household items. Various designs are shown in the photo:

garden furniture

Sofas, tables and armchairs - this is not the only idea of using pallets in interior design. In the garden, their functions are even broader. The pallet-based arrangement of the items you need depends on your needs:

The photo gallery will help to make sure of the unlimited possibilities of using pallets when arranging a suburban area:

Other design finds

Having studied the ideas of using pallets as sofas, it is worth stopping at another common option for decorating furniture from boxes - creating a bed. If the base of the bed is made from one row of pallets, you get a piece of furniture similar to Asian interiors, where low elements prevail.

To obtain a higher bed, the pallets are placed in two rows. Good ventilation is a significant advantage of this model. the decision to leave the natural color of wood or resort to staining depends solely on the rest of the interior design. For a change, pallets are installed at the head of the bed, this furniture option is optimal for the following interior styles:

  • loft;
  • country;
  • eco-style;
  • minimalism;
  • industrial pop art.

The highlight of the design can be the illumination of the bed from below, as shown in the photo below:
