Do-it-yourself sliding interior doors. Do-it-yourself interior sliding doors: video, photo, installation

Surely everyone at least once thought about how to install something unusual in his apartment. In this article, we will find out how to make a door between the rooms on casters with your own hands.

T those who live in cramped apartments often come up with the idea of \u200b\u200binstalling sliding doors (or compartments) that can at least slightly free up space that can be useful for different purposes, for example, for easy access or furniture. In spacious rooms, such structures are also appropriate, since they can advantageously divide the territory. For example, dividing a large kitchen into a dining room and a place for cooking. If you know how to hold a screwdriver and other tools in your hands, then installing a door for a room on casters will not be difficult for you.

So, first you need to get the right materials for the job:

  1. Doors Both single-leaf and double-leaf ones will do.
  2. The design of the rollers.
  3. Metallic profile.
  4. Plastic grooves.
  5. Screwdriver (medium in size) and drill.
  6. Self-tapping screws and brackets.
  7. Door furniture.
  8. Level and epoxy glue.

Next, you need to mark the doorway. To do this, add 20 mm to the height of the web for gaps from the bottom and top. After you need to put a point that will serve as a place for fastening the profile. Next, two other points must be laid off from it parallel to the ceiling at equal distances. Then you need to perform the following actions:

  • install the grooves using self-tapping screws, so that the caps are completely sealed;
  • after that, with the help of a chisel, it is necessary to remove part of the tree, in the place of which there will be rollers;
  • then, using self-tapping screws, the wheel structure must be attached to the door. If the version of the door leaf is not an "accordion", then the wheels can simply be screwed to the door leaf;
  • then you need to start working with the lock and handles, but here it is better not to act on your own, since you can ruin the door. It is advisable to transfer this stage of work to the end, and then hire specialists;
  • then the installed structure is hung on the profile. In advance it is worth making a supply of limiters that will prevent the canvas from falling out. It is better to fill them with epoxy glue for reliable fastening;
  • after the hinged doors are inserted directly into the grooves.

At the end, the installed door must be checked several times, opening and closing, in order to make sure that it is suitable for operation. If all is well, you can begin to refine the metal profile. To do this, put a wooden plank on it and fix it using brackets. On this installation work ends. On average, such a procedure takes no more than 3 hours, and experienced craftsmen are able to cope in 1.5-2 hours.

Interior doors that have guide rollers in their design must be installed correctly, otherwise it will be very inconvenient to use them. To do this, you must follow the rules and following the instructions. Often, novice masters make mistakes when they install the interior door on casters with their own hands, which in the future affects its operational characteristics. Consider what you can not do when installing this design:

When installing doors on casters, do not forget about safety rules. Also, you can not neglect the rules for using sliding structures. It is not allowed to abruptly open or close them, clap and pull. Otherwise, they will fail. In addition, it is very important that the compartment doors can open completely to the stop, so if there is furniture nearby that interferes with this, it must be removed to the side.

To summarize, we can say that interior sliding doors are a very profitable and convenient option for partitioning the premises. They are able to visually increase the space, it is impossible to get hurt about them, they are durable and practical. If you correctly install such designs, then they will serve for a long time and properly, delighting you with their stylish look.

The tightness of standard city apartments forces their owners to use a variety of fixtures and structures, the operation of which will help save precious living space. Having made sliding doors on casters with their own hands and installing them instead of traditional swinging, the owner will be able to make room for the installation of furniture or simply increase the free space of the premises. In addition, sliding structures are often installed in large openings between rooms and become original mobile, allowing, if necessary, to divide them into different rooms or combine into one large room.

Having understood the principles of installation of such a design, it’s possible to assemble and install sliding doors yourself, saving on the involvement of craftsmen, it is quite possible if you have the necessary tools at hand and the owner himself has stable carpentry and locksmithing skills and proper accuracy.

Advantages and disadvantages of sliding door structures

The choice of specific models of sliding doors depends on the layout of the apartment, as well as on the design of the rooms. But before acquiring interior sliding systems, it is necessary to learn not only about their positive qualities, but also about their weaknesses.

So, sliding doors have the following positive qualities:

  • They give considerable savings in space.
  • Unlike the swing structure, the sliding door will never randomly open and close from drafts.
  • Such doors even help visually expand the small space of the apartment.
  • The advantage is the absence of thresholds in some types of such structures, which is extremely convenient if elderly people with disabilities live in the apartment, as well as small children.
  • A sliding double door is able to divide the room into separate zones, which helps to optimally use the space of a one-room apartment.
  • With a competent approach, the sliding door is not so difficult to install and easy to operate.
  • The sliding design is able to bring personality to the standard layout of the apartment, aesthetically transform it.
  • Thanks to modern technology, sliding doors are easy to automate, and this distinguishing feature can be called one of the key advantages over swing structures.

However, it is equally important to know the "cons" of such doors, since, having installed them, it will be necessary to observe some conditions of their operation:

  • The roller system and the guide rail, along which the door leaf will move, must always be maintained in good condition and clean, otherwise they may fail, and one day the door will jam in one position.
  • Usually, a standard sliding design, unlike a swing structure, is unable to soundproof the divided rooms, since at least small gaps will remain between the door frame and the door leaf.
  • The door will not be able to restrain the smells from cooking, if it is planned to be installed at the entrance to the kitchen.
  • All the parameters of the structure during its installation should be well measured, and its elements should be installed perfectly precisely vertically and horizontally, otherwise the door may pry. However, this requirement probably applies to all types of door structures.
  • Installation of a double-wing door is a more complicated process than that consisting of a single leaf, since the moving sheets will need to be very precisely adjusted not only to the doorway, but also to each other.
  • The high cost of sliding structures can also not be attributed to the merits.

Varieties of Sliding Doors

There are several types of sliding doors. They differ from each other in design, appearance and installation of the working mechanism.

All varieties of sliding doors have a general operating principle, which distinguishes them from swing structures - they move along a horizontal line, along the door and wall. But, these systems are divided into different types and can be:

- traditional sliding;

- cascading;

- folding - “accordion”;

- radial sliding.

Any of the existing designs can be single-leaf or multi-leaf. So, from two to four door leafs can be included in a multi-leaf system.

If the door has not yet been selected, then it is worth considering the features of each type, and only then decide on the design.

Traditional sliding door

Traditional sliding doors are divided into pendant, cassette pendant, and having two guides - the upper and lower.

  • Lower and upper guide construction

This type of sliding door is the most common, and is most often chosen for installation in apartments, as it is considered the most reliable, of course, with correctly set and fixed guides. In this design, one or more flaps move along the upper and lower rails.

It should be noted right away that this type of sliding door is quite complicated for self-assembly, since it is necessary to perfectly fit the upper and lower guides to each other.

Find out a fully feasible task from a new article on our portal.

The disadvantage of this system is the fact that the lower rail is mounted on the floor surface, that is, either a threshold will form, or a recess will have to be cut out. In the guide profile, which is installed in the floor, dust and small debris will surely collect, which can hamper, slow down, and sometimes even block the movement of the door leaf, so you will need to constantly carefully monitor the cleanliness of this unit.

  • Pendant sliding door

Suspended structures are also quite popular, as they do not require a rail to be installed in the floor and do not have a threshold, but only move along the upper guide.

The rail is fixed on the wall above the doorway or to the ceiling, depending on the height of the selected door and room. The guide may be open or closed with a camouflage or decorative casing.

The door leaf in this design option will be in a suspended state, at a distance of 10 ÷ 15 mm from the wall, so you need to take into account the fact that you will not be able to put one of the pieces of furniture to the wall towards which the door will open.

Depending on how the interior will be decorated, a false panel that will cover the upper guide can be fixed only on the segment of the door’s movement or from wall to wall, and sometimes such a “border” is placed around the entire perimeter of the room. In the latter case, it will serve as a decorative element of the interior and will also serve as a mask for curtain rods. The option of fixing the border on all walls of the room is possible if the door guide is high enough on the wall.

  • Sliding Sliding Cassette Doors

This variant of the sliding door may have a suspended structure or move along two guides. Its main difference from previous varieties is the location of the rails and the canvas inside the doorway. That is, when moving the door along the guides, it will go into a niche arranged in the wall special for these purposes.

If you choose a similar design in a private house, then it is usually provided in advance, when building walls or partitions. Well, in an apartment, such a niche is formed from a drywall construction, but in this case, you need to take into account that the size of the room will decrease by about 100 ÷ 120 mm.

The advantage of this option can be called a more snug fit on the front side of the door when it is closed and the absence of an open gap between the wall and the canvas, which means that the sound insulation of the rooms will be an order of magnitude higher than in any other sliding design.

In addition, by installing a similar kind of door, you can free up the wall and the space in front of it, adding aesthetics and comfort to the interior.

However, given all the alterations that will need to be done by installing cassette sliding doors, it is clear that the total cost of installing them will be quite high, even if all the work is done independently.

Cascading Sliding Structures

The cascading version of the sliding doors is arranged on the same principle as the traditional one, with upper and lower guides, but differs in that it consists of several paintings, each of which moves on its own separate rail. Therefore, such a system can be moved apart in the form of a partition, dividing the room into two zones, or be assembled near one of the walls and overlap the room only by the width of one canvas.

Such systems are usually used as partitions, but they may well become a wall with a door if only one of the panels is moved. Such sliding structures are made most often from natural or polymer glass in different shades, and has a height from the ceiling to the floor, so the lower guides are built into the floor, and the upper ones are fixed to the ceiling.

Very often, such systems are used to create glazed verandas or terraces - there is always the opportunity to turn the room into an open summer recreation area.

How to rationally use a veranda or terrace

Modern window and door structures allow you to fully use the premises of the house or annexes in the winter, and in the summer to turn them into open cozy recreation areas. An example is about which is described in a special publication of our portal.

Sliding structure - accordion

The sliding accordion system can act as a partition or door. It consists of several paintings connected by end loops.

Sliding folding door design - “accordion”

This is a rather complicated design for independent manufacture, and assembly is best done with the invitation of an experienced specialist.

The width of the door leaf can be different - it depends on the size of the opening and the free space that can be allocated for the structure when folded.

The accordion system can be installed in a standard or wide doorway, as well as as a partition that divides the room into zones. When installing it to act as partitions, the guides are mounted on the floor and ceiling.

The characteristic disadvantages of this design include the almost complete absence of sound and heat insulation.

Radius Sliding Structures

Sliding radius systems give the interior of any room a special charm, but to install them you will have to create a drywall semicircular wall. This variety of designs can be used for installation in a doorway or serve as a full-fledged room partition, installed from the ceiling to the floor.

The radius option is mounted on the upper and lower guide, and can walk along the outer or inner side of the wall, and also be built into it, that is, empty walls inside will become a cassette into which door leafs will be hidden when they are opened.

A well-made and correctly installed structure of this type can create a sufficiently high sound and heat insulation. However, if there is no experience in installing a radius system of sliding doors and drywall constructions, but there is a great desire to have such a decorative and functional element in the interior of your apartment, then it is better to entrust its installation to an experienced master - self-installation will be extremely difficult.

Materials for assembling a pendant door structure

The suspended structure is the easiest option for self-assembly, and therefore it is worth considering how all the work is carried out and what materials will be needed for them.

  • Depending on the size of the doorway, one or two door leafs will be required. At the same time, it is imperative to take into account the massiveness of the paintings, since according to this parameter the fittings will be selected that should keep them weight.

For a suspended structure, the web should have a larger size than the doorway.

  • The upper guide is a rail along which door leafs will be moved using roller mechanisms fixed to them. The length of the guide should be equal to the double width of one or two door leafs.

The upper guide is a metal profile. It needs a beam of the same length
  • A wooden beam, equal in length to the rail, and having a cross-sectional dimension of at least 50 × 50 mm - a guide will be fixed to it.
  • A set of rollers and mounts, selected by weight and thickness of one or two paintings.

  • Quality boards or panels for framing the doorway - making boxes.
  • Three platbands - two vertical and one horizontal, for the doorway, and a false panel that will cover the beam and the guide fixed above the doorway.
  • In the design, if desired, can be integrated, it is installed for easier closing of the door leaf.
  • One or two sets of door handles.

  • Anchors for fixing the beam to the wall.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Fasteners for installation of platbands and false panels.
  • Polyurethane mounting foam for filling the gaps between the door frame and the wall.

The table below presents the dimensions of the canvases of the sliding structure with one leaf and the corresponding dimensions of the doorways:

If there is no certainty that the door leaf will be made independently with the necessary quality, then it is better to purchase it in a finished form, since doors manufactured using professional equipment will look much more spectacular.

Tools for work

Now about the tools, without which it will not work to make the door system and make its installation.

The list of minimum requirements includes the following items:

  • Electric drill (perforator) with drills for wood and concrete.
  • Circular saw, electric jigsaw and hand saw.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Construction level, plumb line, 1000 mm ruler, square, tape measure, folding meter.
  • Electric or regular planer.
  • Manual milling machine with a set of necessary milling cutters.
  • Hammer, chisel, pliers.

Door leaf fabrication

If the door will be manufactured independently, then you need to know what it can be made of and what models of paintings can be used in this design.

False doors can be solid, paneled or with the use of artificial glass mounted in a frame with a different number of jumpers. A solid canvas can be made of massive boards, chipboard or well-crafted wooden beams and plywood. It should be noted that all these materials have a sufficiently large massiveness, therefore, ready-made door panel options for hanging doors are often made using high-quality plastic or metal, which is used as a frame for installing transparent synthetic glass inserts in it.

In any case, whether the doors will be purchased ready-made or made independently, the parameters of the panel should be selected depending on the size of the doorway. The exact ratios of these sizes can be found in the above tables.

For example, for a doorway with one sheet of 865 × 2175 mm in size, with a box installed in it, you need a door that has a size of 900 × 2200 mm, and when installing a double-leaf structure in an opening of 1765 × 2175 mm, the panels must have a size of 900 + 900 × 2200 mm.

If a chipboard of the desired size is purchased as a blank for a door, it can be made easier by cutting one or more windows in it, then treat their edges with a milling cutter and install thin plywood or glass in them.

The manufacturing process of glazed or lightweight particleboard cloth is performed as follows:

  • The panel for starters is laid out. In this case, it is necessary to observe the condition that at least 150 mm must be retreated from the edges in any case. Thus, the framing of a door leaf made of chipboard should not already be this size.
  • After the marking, the internal parts of the panel are cut with an electric jigsaw. In order to perform this process, a hole is drilled in one of the marking corners, then a jigsaw blade is inserted into it, and the marked parts of the panel are carefully cut out.
  • Next, you need to qualitatively process the inner edges obtained after cutting openings, otherwise they will look messy. This work can be done in two ways - to process the edges with a milling cutter or to refine with a relief glazing bead. The bead is cut to the size of the windows, then glued or nailed around the entire perimeter on one side of the panel.

  • Further, the size of the window cuts out glass or an insert from plywood, and installs into it, clinging to a fixed glazing bead. After this, the inserts on the other hand are fixed with a second glazing bead.
  • The end surfaces of the door leaf made of chipboard can be ennobled with a special decorative thermal tape, which is glued using a conventional iron.
  • If plywood inserts are installed in cut windows, they can be adjusted to the common color before installation by painting, staining or laminating. The rafters should also have a color close to all elements of the door construction.
  • Doors can also be made of timber of different sizes in cross section, but the frame frame thickness should not be more than 30 mm.

The bar for the manufacture of such a door leaf must be of high quality and well-crafted.

The beam from which the internal jumpers of the frame will be made must have a smaller or the same thickness as the frame. The size of the glazing bead and the thickness of the panels that will be installed in the formed windows must be thought out in advance, since the first should not protrude outward relative to the surface of the entire door leaf.

It should be noted that the manufacture of a frame door from a beam is a more complicated process, since all frame elements are fastened together with extreme accuracy and reliability, otherwise the finished sheet can "lead", that is, its frame is deformed.

  • There are several techniques for joining the beam, but the most popular are in the "half tree" and "in the paw." They are quite simple to saw, hold the structure well from deformation and reliably fasten the elements together.

It is better if the bars are fastened together not with metal screws, or even more with nails, but with special wooden pins, which are driven into holes drilled through through, need a diameter at the nodes of the glued joints of the bars. For each of these nodes of the door frame, it is necessary to use two pins installed diagonally.

  • In the lower end part of the web, along its entire width, a groove for the flag roller or, as it is called in another way, the lower door lock is milled.

Mounting system

When the door leaf is ready, it is necessary to fix the furniture elements on it - these are roller mechanisms, special locks or handles that are different from those that are installed in the usual swing structures. In any sliding doors, handles are recessed into the canvas, since they should not interfere with its movement.

  • The first step is marking the location of the handle on both sides of the door leaf. It should be located at a distance of 35 ÷ 50 mm from the vertical edge of the panel.
  • After that, the width of the nest and its height are marked from the marked line. Further, from the top marking point, a distance equal to half the width of the future hole is measured - this point will be the center of the circle, which is drilled using a core drill of the desired diameter.

  • The same process is carried out on the underside of the marked handle slot. You should get two through holes with a depth to which the handle will be recessed into the canvas.
  • Then, the wood between the two marked crowns with round recesses is selected using a mill or a chisel and a hammer.
  • Handles in sliding structures are fixed in glue cuts, for example, “liquid nails”, or are snapped onto special fasteners that are pre-screwed into the resulting opening.
  • The next step on the upper end side of the door leaf, you need to mark and fasten the roller mechanisms using self-tapping screws. Under them, most likely, you have to use a milling cutter (chisel) to choose curly grooves.
  • The rollers must be fixed at a certain distance from the edges of the door leaf. This parameter is indicated in the instructions attached to the set of metal fittings.
  • Now the finished door can be set aside for now, and you can do the refinement, of course, if the door frame is not already installed in it.
  • To assemble and install a box for sliding doors is much easier than for swing structures, as it consists of three absolutely even elements - two vertical and one horizontal boards (panels), fastened together using long self-tapping screws.

The box can be made of solid wood or chipboard - this factor does not play a big role in this case, since there is no load on the mounted structure. Its sole purpose is to give the doorway a neat and aesthetic appearance.

  • A fastened box is installed in the doorway and wedged with wooden spacers that drive between its panels and the wall to achieve perfect vertical and horizontal walls.

The control of the position of the panel panels is carried out using the building level and plumb. When the structure is installed perfectly precisely, it is fixed to the walls. This can be done by drilling through holes in the boards of the box or by screwing metal plates to the end sides of the boards and to the wall.

  • Further, on the prepared bar, equal in length to the double width of the door leaf, a metal guide for the rollers is fixed with screws.
  • Holes are drilled in advance in the beam through which it will be fixed on the wall.
  • After that, roller mechanisms mounted on the door are inserted into the guide rail.

  • The whole structure is attached to the doorway, set according to the level, if necessary, temporarily supported by wooden wedges, and then the beam is “tightly” screwed to the wall.
  • Further, the door moves to one and the other side of the guide to determine the places at the beginning and end of the rail where the travel stops or web stops will be fixed. Stoppers in different door models can have a different design.

  • The next step in front of the open door, in the lower end part of it, in the cut-out groove, a flag roller is installed and screwed to the floor. It should be perfectly even under the upper guide rail.

This lower stopper does not allow the door leaf to go sideways, that is, does not allow its lateral vibrations.

  • Further, the gaps between the wall and the boards of the door frame are filled with mounting foam. After it dries, the surplus that comes out is cut off.
  • Then the beam and the guide rail are decorated with a false panel, and the gaps between the door frame and the wall are decorated with platbands.

In the case considered, the installation of the simplest sliding suspension structure, not complicated by unnecessary elements, was presented. Therefore, the installation of such a system seems quite affordable for independent execution by any home master, of course, subject to all the nuances and the implementation of technological recommendations.

Video: Another example of installing a suspended roller door structure

Having made the interior door with your own hands, you will not only save a significant amount of money, but also be able to realize the most daring design ideas in the interior. There will also be no need to call specialists, choose among standard solutions or argue for a long time, defending your vision. But then it is necessary to master all the subtleties and nuances of the independent manufacture of door structures.

Features and Benefits

A sliding door is justified not only because it is externally beautiful and can fit into a variety of interiors. Its important advantage is the most rational use of space.

Not a single square centimeter will be wasted and it will be possible to functionally and stylistically divide the room, dividing its new parts.

In addition to the listed advantages, such input structures:

  • do not slam on their own with continuous draft;
  • do not interfere with ventilating a house or apartment;
  • differ in light and smooth operation of the opening and locking mechanism;
  • allow you to use automation;
  • eliminate the need to create thresholds.
  • the design itself is extremely simple - the roller mechanism is attached to the web and inserted into the guides in a certain way.

Types and mechanisms of interior doors

For apartments and private houses use their options such as:

  • compartment doors(with one sash or a pair of sashes moving parallel to the wall along the rails);
  • cassette(at the moment of opening the shutters are removed inside the pencil case);
  • radius (stand out in a unique form);
  • cascading (each leaf has its own, autonomous guide);
  • intracavity (when opening the sash they go towards, you can only go through part of the opening);
  • rotary sliding.

The sliding door mechanism may have a different number of guides and carriages on them. Almost always, a thick-walled aluminum profile is used to manufacture the rail.

So that the sash does not break out of the guide and does not roll out of it, bounding and braking parts are sure to be added.

Sliding doors are divided into:

  • outboard(held only from above);
  • supporting (the load from which is distributed only along the lower guide). A typical mechanism that can withstand loads of up to 120 kg, in most cases, does not require a threshold.

A sliding door of an open type, all of whose structural elements are visible, can have a web no heavier than 100 kg. In the hidden type, the lower guides are not used, and they are incompatible with glass structures

A door closer can be installed on any type of door to ensure smooth opening and closing.

During installation, the slightest irregularities should be detected and immediately eliminated, otherwise the flaps may roll back without permission. Especially often this problem arises in the Versailles format compartment system.

How to install?

For those who do not have much experience in home repair and installation of various door structures, it is best to opt for single-leaf doors. Having mastered the work with them, you can easily cope with more sophisticated systems. The first step is the marking, which will help establish the guides. Measure the height starting with the tape measure, starting from the floor surface, add two millimeters to the resulting value (you need a gap) and consider the height of the roller apparatus.

A pair of marks are connected in a straight line. Be sure to make sure that it is completely horizontal (the construction level will help). Further below this line guides are mounted. The fixing method depends on the severity of the door. The lightest options can be installed on dowels, while the heavier ones will require a bracket. The heaviest input blocks should hold the beam.

When the roller is inserted into the rails, the sashes and the canvas are fastened on top with brackets. If the canvas is made of glass, fastenings will not be required as usual.

Even if you easily raise the canvas, attract a partner: it’s faster, more reliable and easier.

Additional nuances

When placing the door with your own hands, periodically check with a level that there are no deviations, and if necessary, tighten bolts or other fastenings. The roller mechanism should be masked with a decorative film, and only then install the accessories. Niche sliding doors require the formation of a drywall pocket on an adjacent wall.

After completing all work, check that the structure and any part of the mechanism operate without failures, without stress. Rollers should roll on rails easily and freely, without bumping into obstacles. Extraneous noises and creaks show that something is done wrong.

Assembly assembly

For the interior door to be installed, it still needs to be assembled. It is necessary to prepare a set of boards, a tape measure, a screwdriver, level and fasteners for work. The advantage of self-assembly is that you are almost unlimited in choosing product parameters.

Most often, pine boards or laminated particleboard are used, the thickness is the same in these cases - 1.6 cm.

If time is more important to you, you can purchase a factory canvas. The joints of the boards or plates are coated with PVA glue, and then tightened with a clamp. On each side, three supports are added to the screws and leave the workpiece to dry exactly one day. After the adhesive layer has hardened, you can remove the clamps and soak the canvas with stain. The design of the sliding interior door involves a bias of two or three degrees in the direction in which they close.

But to make a hook is quite possible, for this they take steel strips of 35-40 mm wide, the thickness of which is 3-3.5 cm. Cutting such steel into the necessary fragments will help the angle grinder. Holes for roller axes are prepared in a workpiece clamped in a vice. The product will last long enough if the canvas is painted with a special primer. M8 bolts are screwed into the holes with a diameter of 0.8 cm over the guide. The guides must be mounted above the opening in order to set them in the correct position.

From all of the above, we can conclude that making with your own hands and installing sliding interior doors is not difficult. It is only necessary to carefully observe the simplest rules, and then success will be achieved for sure.

With the help of sliding doors you can create an unusual interior of an apartment or a private house. Using this device, it will be possible to rationally use the space, delimit it into separate sectors, without losing the integrity of the room. Speaking about how to make sliding doors with your own hands, you should know that everything is simple. You only need to understand the manufacturing process and have some skills in working with tools.

Existing Sliding Door Designs

Today, there are various door systems of this type, which differ from each other in appearance. You should know that the design itself most often remains the same. Such doors are a system that consists of several rollers, guides and canvas. The mechanism of the rollers is fixed to the door, and the rollers themselves move along the guides that are fixed above the opening. Different models can be equipped with 2-4 sets of rollers, several guides and canvases.

Types of sliding doors.

The construction includes platbands, extras, special fittings, as well as decorative panels that cover the mechanism itself.

There are a fairly large number of different types of doors, but the following are most often used:

  • sliding coupe;
  • harmonic;
  • cascading;
  • single or multi-winged;
  • radius.

Sliding fittings

Sliding doors have an unusual design, therefore, special fittings should be purchased for them.Handles are not the same as those found on ordinary doors. The difference between such devices is that they are recessed into the canvas. They need to be drowned so that the device can freely move from one side to the other and drive into the opening that is intended for it. The locking mechanism is designed for vertical locking.

In the kit along with the finished design is all the necessary accessories. However, if you want to mount the handles and locks yourself, you will need to choose them correctly. In this case, it is recommended to seek the advice of specialists or search by model in the catalog.

Mechanisms for doors of this type

The scheme of fastening the rollers of sliding doors.

This method of opening occurs due to the movement of the rollers along the guides. The mechanism and rollers should be selected based on the type of construction, the number of wings and the material from which the canvas is made. Different systems can have different weights, and therefore they will have a different load on the entire product. For example, if you compare a door made of MDF with 1 wing and a glass product with 2 wings, the first one will weigh much less, and therefore a simplified mechanism of rollers should be selected for it.

When installing some types of doors, it will be necessary to take into account the number of roller mechanisms, in which case it will be important to make the correct selection of guides.

For example, for a cascade structure, 2 mechanisms for several canvases and guides with several gutters should be installed. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that in the process of manufacturing cascade and coupe structures, it will be necessary to install one gutter for door leafs.

As mentioned earlier, the possible period of use of such a device will depend on the set of rollers and the guide. However, in some cases, you will need to install 2 guides - one at the top of the opening, and the other at the bottom. Only in this way will it be possible to obtain a stable and high-quality product with a heavy canvas.

Existing ways to install sliding doors yourself

The functionality and comfort of the doors can make it possible to realize any interior design decisions of both small rooms and large rooms. Such a product will fit perfectly into the interior, which will make it possible to transform the space of an apartment or private house.

In most cases, sliding doors are installed between several residential sectors. To zoning the room and visually preserve its integrity, you should use doors with 2 wings. When the structure will be in the closed position, it will be possible to get 2 different rooms. When the doors are open, you get 1 large room. By installing a similar structure, for example, you can separate the workplace from the common meeting room.

Another option for installing such a product is the installation of doors between living rooms and a balcony or terrace in a country house. In this case, it is best to use a structure that is made of glass. A large amount of light can pass through it.

How to make sliding doors and install them?

First of all, you need to determine the type of design. After that, you will need to purchase all the necessary elements. The installation process itself will be considered as an example of a sliding design with 1 leaf. This door is the simplest and is used most often. Its installation is quite simple. However, the main points that apply to other types of sliding doors will also be mentioned.

The manufacture and installation of structures of this type is as follows:

Scheme of installation of sliding doors.

  1. First of all, you need to make markings for the guides. In this case, you can use 2 options. Measure the height of the door from the floor base with a tape measure. Then, 17-20 mm is added to the obtained result to the gap between the floor base and the installed structure. The resulting height is added to the height of the roller structure and the guide. Next, you need to put a few marks on the wall and draw a line. The second option is practically no different from the first. The only difference is that the canvas will need to be attached to the opening, set marks on the top, and then add the height of the roller structure to the result.
  2. Before installing the rail, make sure that the marks are horizontal. This can be accomplished using the building level. If this test is not carried out, then after installation the doors may not open correctly.
  3. Next, you need to install the guide along the intended line so that the structure is located under the line. The guide can be fixed in various ways. Some structures are fixed to the wall with dowels, while others are mounted on brackets or wooden bars. The guide should be at a small distance from the wall so that the product does not cling to the opening. It is important to carefully select the guides and choose the correct mounting method.
  4. After the guide is fixed, you will need to insert the fixing screw into the roller carriage and insert the entire device into the guide. For an ordinary door, 2 rollers are used. But if you plan to install cascading doors, then the rollers should be on all wings.
  5. In the upper part of the canvas you will need to install brackets for carriage rollers. They should be fixed indented 4-5 mm from the end of the door. If you plan to install a glass structure, then several metal paws should be used as fasteners, which fix the glass to each other and are pulled together by fixing screws. Glass has a large weight, therefore it is recommended to install several guides.
  6. When the rollers and all the fasteners are mounted, it will be necessary to put the canvas in place, lift it and screw the fasteners into the brackets in the upper part of the door. This stage is recommended to be performed with a partner, which will help to lift and hold the structure while the screws are installed. Then you will need to check the horizontal structure. If necessary, it will need to be aligned by tightening the bolts.
  7. Doorways and slopes can be hidden behind platbands and extras. The mechanism of the rollers will need to be hidden behind a decorative rail, which is hung from above.
  8. At the very end, you will need to install the door hardware.

It is not difficult to make a door of this type if you have all the necessary elements and follow the sequence of actions.

Pros and cons of a sliding door

With all the variety of doors, the mechanism in them is the same, and the doors themselves can differ only in appearance.

There are several popular designs:

  • Compartment doors;
  • Cascading models;
  • Harmonic;
  • Multi-leaf systems;
  • Radius systems.

Hardware

Unusual design involves such unusual fittings. If you are going to make sliding doors with your own hands, you need special locks, handles and other details. Handles and locks for these designs look unusual - the handles are recessed into the canvas. This is done so that when closing the canvas does not interfere.

In the second case, there is a need to perform an independent installation. When choosing, carefully examine the accessories.

How is the mechanism

Telescopic (cascading) sliding doors.

When installing certain types of doors, it is necessary to take into account the number of rollers in order to correctly select the guides for them. For example, if you plan to make cascading sliding doors with your own hands, then you will need to prepare two mechanisms for each blade. The guide profile must have 2 gutters. It is also very important that for cascade structures, one gutter is required in the guide profile for each web.

Here's how to make sliding doors with your own hands. In the video you can see what mechanisms and accessories are used.

Mounting options

Unique characteristics, high functionality, excellent ergonomic characteristics make it possible to embody the most interesting design ideas. This is very true in a very limited space. And the manufacture and installation of sliding doors with your own hands can be the best solution in large areas.

A popular solution is to install a sliding system in one room, but between two zones.

For example, a double-leaf door helps not only divide the room into different zones, but at the same time leave the room integral. Look how sliding doors change the room. They are all made by hand. These photos show how the space is zoned.

Another way of using structures is a partition that separates the living part of the room and the balcony or terrace. But this is relevant only for suburban cottages. But here the right decision would be to create sliding doors with your own hands. Through transparent glass, sunlight will enter the room, and in summer it will also be warm. If you open the door, the room expands to infinity.

Often such designs are used in technical rooms. Utility rooms or pantries will be closed and it will be possible to save valuable space. This technique is often used in cramped city apartments.

The most difficult to create a sliding door with your own hands is a radius model. Here the complexity is not only in the manufacture of guides, but also in the creation of the canvas.

Manufacturing process

For starters, here's how to make sliding interior doors with your own hands. Watch the video - this video shows the whole process from beginning to end.

The first thing you need to go to the store for accessories and everything you need. But first you need to take measurements. It is very important to know exactly the width and height of the doorway and the door leaf. Knowing these parameters, you can not only without difficulty and confusion acquire everything you need to create sliding doors with your own hands.

The mechanism of the sliding structure.

In a hardware store, the first thing to do is purchase a mechanism. The consultants will be able to choose the right option according to the size of the doorways and the door leaf. It should be noted that the length of the guides should be 2 times longer than the canvas. If the system is a little longer, it doesn’t matter. You can always trim the excess.

It is also worth thinking about the new door frame.

It may be necessary for her to purchase an additional rail. Also, before you make sliding doors with your own hands, usually they also acquire decorative trims, as well as persistent slats. If the task is to make a beautiful door, then you should choose a suitable one tightly.

Web preparation

For preparatory work, a milling cutter or grinder, drill, hammer and chisel are required. Which tool to choose is a matter of taste, but with the help of a power tool, preparatory work can be done more accurately and much faster.

On the bottom end of the blade, a groove is cut in the center. Its width should be 3 mm. It is needed for installation and operation of the guide. A more accurate groove is done using a milling cutter. In general, the creation of beautiful sliding doors with your own hands using only a hand tool is impossible.

Next, it's time to unpack the mechanism and find the rollers and staples in the package. First, the rollers are connected to the brackets. On the latter, special holes are provided for this.
The resulting nodes are attached to the upper end part of the cavity and outlines the contours of the parts. Further, on the same end part, grooves equal to the thickness of the fastening part of the bracket are selected. Then, the part is screwed to the body of the canvas. In the simplest version without a lock, you can consider a sliding interior door with your own hands ready.

At the next stage of work, a castle is installed. For work, the same manual milling cutter is used. The installation location is marked. 900 mm are measured from the bottom of the web. There will be a pen. The lock is embedded in the center of the canvas. The length of the castle is divided in half. The length of the castle is laid off from the place where the handle will be. This is done in two directions from the center. Further - at this point they make a niche for the castle. Then the lock is inserted and secured with screws.

Professionals recommend carefully marking the canvas before making a sliding door with their own hands. If the marking is incorrect, you can ruin the door irreversibly. If door handles are needed, then grooves or a through hole are also cut out for them. Making a hole is much simpler and cheaper.

Installation of the mechanism, installation of the door

Installation of the sliding system is simple. If you do not know how to make a sliding door with your own hands, then even in this case installation will not be difficult. All that is needed is the installation of the guide profile strictly horizontally.

The edge of the guide profile must protrude 50 mm from the edge of the opening. On the other hand, the profile must go to the width of the door leaf. The installation height of the mechanism must be calculated. This size is made up of the height of the web and rollers, as well as the gap under the door.

The distance of the profile from the wall depends on the wall itself. If the wall is flat, then everything is very simple. If not too smooth, then the process of manufacturing and installing a sliding interior door with your own hands may be slightly more complicated.

The canvas is installed on the rails on the side. After the door sits down, an emphasis is attached to the bottom. Now it remains only to equip the opening. Now you know how to make sliding doors with your own hands. It is not complicated, original and ergonomic.

Such doors are a new trend. Many designers use these solutions to create unique interiors. Such designs are also popular in Japan. You can decorate your home and expand your space. In addition, how to make a sliding door with your own hands is a very exciting experience.
