What hexagon is used to adjust the windows? Do-it-yourself adjustment of PVC windows

Fittings for plastic windows allow you to adjust how tightly they close and, if necessary, adjust them depending on the season. However, sometimes even high-quality expensive fittings require repair. In this article we will tell you how to adjust plastic windows and how you can fix minor mechanical failures yourself. To do this, it is enough to know the position and operation of the main adjustment units and have the necessary tools.

Depending on the current problem and the hardware manufacturer, for repair you will need:

  • 4 mm hexagon (almost every cyclist has it in their kit);
  • a screwdriver with bits marked T, TX (star-shaped), as well as a regular Phillips number 3-4;
  • pliers;
  • WD-40 aerosol.

Adjustment points

Let's consider popular situations when adjustment of PVC windows and fittings for winter and summer is required, and we will also tell you how to eliminate minor faults. Only the general technology will be described; some nuances may vary depending on the manufacturer. In any case, this can be found in the instructions.

Repair of window and balcony handles

Door handle loosening

To fix a loose door handle, you need to tighten its fastening. This is the simplest adjustment of a plastic window; for access to the adjustment mechanism, a pad is provided on the bottom of each handle. They pull it towards themselves and turn the entire element perpendicularly. So you can see two bolts that are tightened with a regular Phillips screwdriver. If you cannot remove the decorative nozzle with your hands, be careful: it is made of soft plastic and can be easily damaged by a sharp object.

Installing or replacing a handle with a lock

If you have children, it is important to protect them from the danger of falling out of a window. It is for this purpose that special handles with a lock were invented, which will not allow the child to open the window on their own.

To remove the old handle, first remove the decorative attachment, as in the previous version. Unscrew the two bolts and pull out the handle with gentle rocking. Then insert a new one in the same position and fix it with bolts. Replacing a window handle will take literally one minute, the process is shown in the video.

The handle sticks or does not reach the desired position

This problem occurs for various reasons. Perhaps cleaning and lubricating all the fittings and handles will come in handy here. If the handle closes with great force, adjusting the sash pressure of the plastic windows will most likely help.

To lubricate the mechanism, pull out the handle, clean and vacuum it and the mounting hole. Then all that remains is to lubricate the moving parts with a liquid lubricant, for example, sewing machine oil. If there is corrosion, the surfaces are treated with WD 40 aerosol.

Information on how to adjust the fittings of plastic windows to reduce the pressure of the sashes is presented in a separate section below.

If the handle is jammed

If it happens that the handle is jammed, you must not forcefully close it, breaking it all out. Most likely, the locking mechanism did not work correctly, which prevents the window from changing its position while it is open. To solve this problem, manually remove the locking lever located at the end of the sash next to the handle. The blocker can have two designs:

  1. a plate in the form of a tongue attached to the end, which, when the window is opened, changes its position and becomes at an angle relative to the seal;
  2. a clip that fits onto the seal when opened.

Adjusting window sashes in winter and summer

Checking the frame pressure is very simple: take a sheet of paper and press it with the sash. If the sheet is easy to pull out, it means the clamp is bad and mandatory adjustment is required. If the sheet is pulled out with difficulty, or even breaks, then the setting is done correctly.

Over time, the sealing rubber becomes less voluminous than before, and a gap may form in the window. However, more often this gap appears during seasonal fluctuations, with sudden changes in temperature. To correct this problem, it is often not necessary to change the seal. Adjustment of the sashes of plastic windows is carried out by twisting specially provided mechanisms.

Setting up your plastic windows for winter and summer is especially important if your region experiences large temperature fluctuations. This allows you to reduce the internal stress of the structure and fittings and increase the service life of the rubber seal.

    • At the end of the sash, in the slots of the metal plugs, there are oval cylinders called the trunnion (eccentric). There are grooves on the frame into which the hooks fit when the handle is turned in order to press the sash tightly. Their adjustment can be done by changing the position of the eccentrics or hooks.

    • The photo shows an example of adjusting plastic windows, which is easy to do yourself without calling a specialist. As you can see, to increase the pressure you need to rotate the trunnion 90°. Depending on the manufacturer of the fittings, it can be turned either manually or with a screwdriver/pliers. Please note that the trunnions (which are located in the photo on the right) do not rotate around their axis, but along a small radius.
    • If it is not possible to adjust the eccentrics, tighten the counter hooks on the frame; this usually requires a hex wrench. You can also place a plate under the “response” if the trunnions do not reach it.
    • When the pressure on the frame at the handle weakens or increases, you can move on to adjusting the pressure on the side of the awnings. To do this, remove the plastic plug from the lower canopy.
    • Inside you can find two hexagon bolts and one hidden, with the help of which the position of the frame sashes is adjusted. The clamping force is adjusted by a bolt located perpendicular to the window. It is better to carry out the adjustment with the window closed. Turning it clockwise will increase the pressure on the sash, and turning it counterclockwise will weaken it.
    • The upper part of the sash is attached differently, on a special mechanism called “scissors”. To gain access to the upper part, the window is opened and the locking mechanism is pressed at the end of the sash (it is fixed at an angle to the rubber gasket and is spring-loaded).
    • When the lock is pressed, the handle is turned to ventilation mode. The sash will be removed from the top hinge and will hang only on the “scissors” on top and on the bottom canopy. This gives access to the head, the adjustment of which will change the frame pressure.

If the edge of the sash touches the frame

When a window is left open for a long time or is opened/closed abruptly, the retaining mechanisms may become loose or deformed. If there are no serious defects, then tightening the loops should help.

    • To change the position of the sash, use a hexagon to tighten the bolts on the lower canopy and on the “scissors” system on top. Remove the protective plastic cap from the bottom hinge, and in its upper part you can find a hexagon bolt. To lower the sash, it is twisted counterclockwise, and to raise it, it is twisted clockwise.
    • On massive metal-plastic windows and doors, there are sometimes additional closers that slightly raise the sash before closing. If there is such a mechanism, then it will need to be slightly adjusted.
    • If the sash touches the frame not from the top or bottom, but from the sides, another mechanism is adjusted for this. At the bottom of the canopy, find a bolt located parallel to the window. For convenient access to it there are two exits with heads for the key (from the side of the slope and the sash).

  • If the slope is too close and does not allow access to the bolt, the sash is opened and the second method is used. If you twist it clockwise, the sash will move to the right, and counterclockwise, it will move to the left.
  • The adjustment from above is done a little differently. To do this, open the sash completely and find the slightly recessed head of the adjustment bolt on the side of the mechanism. By changing its position, you can adjust the position of the flaps left and right in the upper part.

If plastic windows are broken, repairs are quite easy to do yourself without calling a specialist. The main problems with the position and pressing of the sashes, and loosening of the mechanisms are solved literally in a minute with the help of simple adjustment of the fittings.

At the moment, plastic windows are popular products for many users. Almost every apartment has PVC windows installed in at least one room. During operation, various problems may appear. For example, the handle may not turn, the windows may stick, or there may be other problems with closing and opening the windows. To solve these problems, you need to know how to adjust plastic windows.

Plastic windows may stop functioning properly not only due to long periods of use. If we take into account the average service life of windows (more than 15 years), then the owners of these double-glazed windows are unlikely to encounter any difficulties. But problems happen, and very often. If it is not possible to call a specialist or you do not want to spend extra money on repairs, then you can do the basic work of adjusting PVC windows yourself, which will allow you to get rid of a large number of problems.

For what problems and when is adjustment required?

You need to adjust plastic windows yourself as needed. If a certain problem arises, you need to immediately look for effective ways to eliminate it. Even if the initial “calibration” is done correctly, problems may arise later. They are associated with deformation of fastening elements, improper operating techniques, violation of tightness, structural integrity, etc.

By self-adjusting plastic windows, you can eliminate the following problems:

  • The handle turns with difficulty or does not turn. The cause of the problem is a lack of lubrication or the sash being lowered. To solve the problem, you need to lubricate all moving elements, then remove the plug. Use a screwdriver to determine where the moving roller is moving incorrectly. After identifying the problem, you need to tighten the screw with a screwdriver.
  • The handle is loose. Problems arise with fittings all the time. They are resolved in a couple of minutes. Here is the plate, which is located under the plug. It rotates 90 degrees. To solve the problem, you need to tighten it with screws using a suitable screwdriver.
  • When torn off, the middle part of the sash catches the frame. Often the reason lies in the vertical or horizontal displacement of the sash. The situation can be resolved by calibrating the sash lift.
  • The lower part of the sash is sagging, and when opening it touches the frame. This problem is quite common and occurs when sash windows sag. This problem can be solved by vertical or horizontal adjustment of the sash lift.
  • Blowing. In cases where a slight draft begins to be felt from under the insulation, you need to independently adjust the sash pressure.

If you cannot independently and accurately understand the reason, you need to seek help from a professional. It's better to pay for minor repairs than to replace broken parts later.

Tools required for adjustment

To adjust plastic windows yourself, you need a few tools. When setting up, use:

  • Pliers.
  • Phillips screwdriver size 3 or 4.
  • Star and Phillips screwdriver bits (often they should be marked “TX” or “T”).
  • A set of hexagons (a 4 mm hexagon must be included in the kit).
  • Regular machine oil and universal WD-40 aerosol.

Basically, only a hexagon is used; in everyday life it is called a furniture key. This metal small hexagonal rod has an L-shape. For convenient use it can be S-shaped.

Star attachments are needed to work with certain models of fittings. Because of this, it is better to use several similar attachments. Craftsmen often fasten fittings with ordinary screws using a Phillips screwdriver, so this is what you will need for adjustment.

The adjustment process is greatly simplified if the operation of the sliding windows is impaired. In this option, all work comes down to setting up the roller carriages, which are intended for attaching the sash.

The main adjustment points for metal-plastic windows

There are a total of 5 adjustment points on the window that allow you to make the correct settings. Let's look at how to adjust plastic windows:

  • The upper part of the sash is adjusted horizontally in the area of the upper hinge.
  • The lower angle of the sash in the area of the lower hinge is adjustable horizontally.
  • The place for adjusting the vertical position of the sash is located in the lower hinge.
  • In the area of the eccentric locking pin, the pressing force of the sash is adjusted.
  • Another way to adjust the sash pressing force is to adjust the lower locking pin.

Using the above points, you can calibrate all possible window positions. All manufacturers use standard window models, so if your plastic double-glazed windows are not made to order, there will be no difficulties in adjusting each point.

Immediately after searching for these points, you should check them for deformation. If deformations are present, then you should immediately contact a specialist. If garbage is found, you should remove it and try again the action that was previously performed with difficulty.

Adjusting the pressure of the window sash to the frame

If the plastic windows you are using do not close properly, and the sashes are not pressed tightly against the frame, then you will need to adjust the plastic windows yourself.

This work is performed using a hex key, which must be turned in one of the directions:

  • Down or up from the frame.
  • Left or right.
  • Adjustment of sash pressure density.

In some cases, problems with closing windows occur due to shrinkage of the house. When inspecting the window, you need to pay attention to the eccentrics that are installed around the perimeter and are part of the window fittings. They will move and move past the pressure pads being used when you try to turn the handle.

To navigate the degree of pressure, you need to pay attention to the marks on the eccentrics. If the lines point towards the street side, then the clamp is weak, but if on the contrary, then the clamp is too tight.

If the clamping mechanism is located in the same place as the hinges, then adjustment is made using a screwdriver or hexagon. The choice will depend on the design of the design fittings.

You can determine by eye the degree of pressure on the window sash by how the tongue is located on it. The more it is extended, the higher the degree of pressure. If the hexagon is rotated counterclockwise, the sash forces will be reduced.

In cases where no option allows you to press the sash to the frame, you need to call a qualified specialist who can solve this problem faster.

Adjusting the hinges

In most cases, plastic window designs are not equipped with a window. The ventilation process can only be carried out after the sash is set to a certain mode.

Too large a gap between the sash and the frame in extreme cold will contribute to strong cooling in the room.

It is necessary to find a “golden mean” so that the gap during ventilation is somewhat smaller. Therefore, you can adjust the pressure of the window hinges so that there is no draft. First you need to determine the location of the blower. If this place is located near the bottom hinge, then a hexagon is needed. You need to remove the cap and start adjusting according to the instructions.

The sash must be set, the handle must be turned to ventilation mode and the top hinge must be pressed. When the window is closed, it is impossible to reach the screw responsible for the degree of clamping of the hinge.

Some window designs have special blockers that disable the ability to open the window. If the handle dangles, this will only make the problem worse.

You need to slightly lift the plastic plate located next to the base of the handle, and then rotate it 90 degrees. After this, the screws will be visible, which need to be tightened with a screwdriver until they stop.

If the handle does not turn well, then you need to lubricate the fittings with machine oil: eccentrics, hinges, clamping mechanisms.

You need to check the fittings and window structure at least once a year, even if nothing bothers you about its operation. Adjustment will allow you to quickly solve problems yourself.

Winter and summer mode

Plastic windows often need to be adjusted for the winter. It is in winter that complete sealing is necessary. In the summer you can let in some fresh air. This is achieved by adjusting the pressure density of the sash. Everything is done in an elementary way.

When adjusting the fittings, you should remember that the summer mode corresponds to a weak window closing pressure, and the winter mode corresponds to a strong or standard one. If work is carried out in winter, then first you should set the standard position and check whether there is airflow. On new PVC, you should not immediately pinch the rubber bands. In this position, the rubber seal installed around the perimeter is strongly pressed. Over time, this causes it to lose its elasticity.

If you immediately set the maximum pressure level, the rubber will deteriorate faster. As a result, the next time you set the plastic windows to the winter position, you will find the elastic all in cracks, and there will still be blowing from under the sash. This means that the seal needs to be replaced. This is not a very difficult process, but it will take more time.

Let's highlight the main requirements for PVC windows to last as long as possible at different times of the year:

  • Do the adjustments yourself correctly so that you do not have to repair the plastic window.
  • Insulation materials must be replaced promptly when worn out.
  • In summer, loosen the pressure.
  • In winter mode, the fittings should not be left for the whole year.

Cleaning the fittings from accumulated dust

Adjusting fittings and repairing plastic windows is associated with high-quality care of the structure. It is necessary to ensure deep cleansing in hard-to-reach places from accumulated dirt. If you don’t clean your windows in a timely manner, sooner or later you will have to repair them again because their functionality has been compromised due to debris. The process of repairing plastic windows is very labor-intensive due to the weight of the structure, so it is better to carry out this work with assistants.

To put the elements in order, use the following adjustment scheme:

  • The sash is removed from its hinges, and the overhead frame elements are inserted.
  • The top axle is removed.
  • The sash is removed from the lower hinges.
  • Carefully set it aside.

Then the area of the sash is inspected and the screws attached to it are unscrewed. The parts of the mechanism should be well lubricated; it is advisable to use specialized solutions that are convenient to apply with a brush. After completing the procedure, the structure must be dried thoroughly using cold air from a hairdryer in the fresh air. Lubricant is applied to each driving mechanism, after which the fittings are assembled in the reverse order and then installed in their original place. Be sure to apply lubricant to each window hinge after adjusting the plastic windows.

It is technically easy to adjust a plastic window. It is enough to use detailed instructions and follow the recommendations themselves in strict order.

The process of adjusting window fittings on plastic windows may depend on the manufacturer. There are varieties that are adjusted with screwdrivers located on the side of the handles. They can be adjusted using a hex key.

Setting all positions for the adjustment points can be done even without experience. The only requirement is to be careful. If calibrated incorrectly, the plastic window may stop functioning correctly, after which you will have to call a technician to re-adjust it.

Nowadays, the popularity of plastic windows is no longer in doubt, because they are not only of high quality, but also affordable. Not to mention that they are easy to use and provide excellent noise protection. But despite this, even the best quality windows require maintenance, so from time to time you need to call a specialist to adjust them. Many people wonder: “Is it possible adjustment of plastic windows without calling the master? It's actually not as difficult as it might seem. Therefore, after reading this article, you will be able to cope with minor problems yourself. Remember that this way you save not only money, but also time. Now let's move on to the instructions themselves and consider the main problems.

Most often you may encounter the following types of malfunctions, which you can easily eliminate on your own:

  • When closing, the sash touches the frame from the side or bottom
  • The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame
  • Wear of striker plates
  • The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close
  • The sash is closed, but the window does not close, the handle does not turn
  • The handle is broken
  • The handle is very difficult to turn

For repairs we may need the following tool:

  • Pliers
  • Hexagon (4 mm)
  • Screwdrivers (phillips and flathead)
  • Set of "stars"

General principles for adjusting window sashes

The sashes of almost all modern PVC windows can be adjusted in three planes, thanks to which you can achieve the correct position of the sashes in the frame and achieve the optimal degree of pressing of the seals along the entire perimeter of the sash.

The methods for adjusting the sash fittings, the appearance of its individual elements and the tool used for adjustment may vary depending on the manufacturer, but in general the general adjustment scheme looks as shown in the figures below.

Figure 1 - General principles for adjusting PVC windows

Figure 2 - General scheme for adjusting a plastic window

Figure 3 - Various window adjustment options

Now let's look at what needs to be done to fix the problem in each of the above cases.

How and how to adjust a plastic window for various malfunctions

1. When closing, the sash touches the frame from below

In this case, you need to move the sash in the direction of the top hinge and up. The procedure is approximately as follows:

2. When closing, the sash touches the side of the frame

In this case, you need to move the sash in the direction of the hinges, to do this:

3. Wear of striker plates

To check the striker bars, open the window and inspect them. Most often there is one strip on each side along the perimeter of the window. If wear is noticeable on one of them, this may indicate that there is unevenness in the fit of the window in the frame. In order to solve the problem, you need to open the window, remove the plastic plugs from the adjusting bolts (they are located on the lower and upper hinges, on the same side as the sash) and use a hex key (four mm) to loosen the bolts themselves. After this, adjust the position of the top half of the window. The adjusting screw will help you with this. First, you need to adjust everything relative to the frame “left - right”, and then go to the bottom screw and adjust the movement “up and down”. It is very easy to monitor the accuracy of the adjustment. To do this, you just need to open and close the window until you understand that the sash fits tightly and evenly into the frame.

4. The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame

On the side of the handle on the side end of the sash there is a system of eccentrics, with the help of which the tightness of the pressure to the sash frame is adjusted. They may have different appearance depending on the manufacturer, but the principle of operation is the same in all cases.

Figure 7 — Adjusting the pins of plastic windows

By rotating the eccentrics with pliers or a hexagon, you can adjust the required degree of pressing of the sash to the frame. In summer it is recommended to apply weak pressure, and in winter - strong pressure. If you need to adjust the degree of pressing of the window sash to the frame from the hinge side, this can be done using the adjusting screw located on the lower hinge (Figure 8).

Figure 8 — Adjusting the window pressure

If this sash is a tilt-and-turn sash, then you can additionally adjust the sash pressure using the top hinge. To get to the adjusting bolt located on the scissors near the top hinge (Figure 9), you need to open the sash and then, after first pressing the lock (Figure 11), set the handle to the ventilation mode. If you need to press the sash against the frame, you need to rotate the bolt clockwise; accordingly, you can loosen the pressure by rotating the bolt counterclockwise.

Figure 9 — Adjusting the pressure of a PVC window

Some types of fittings are regulated exclusively with the help of responders located on the side of the handle (Figure 10 - a). The position of the strike plates is adjusted using a hexagon. To increase the pressure of the window sash to the frame, you need to move the bar towards the street. The frame on the hinge side also has hexagon-adjustable clamping mechanisms (Figure 10 - b, c). The more you extend the tongue, the more the sash will be pressed against the frame.

Figure 10 — Adjusting the window pressure using rivets

5. The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close

In order to prevent damage to the hardware mechanisms, the handle can only be turned when the sash is closed. To prevent accidental turning of the handle when the sash is open, there are special lockers located under the handle at the end of the sash. Depending on the manufacturer, they also come in different types (Figure 11). Before unlocking the handle, you need to press the lock.

Figure 11 — Locking in “closed” mode

6. The sash is closed, but the window does not close - the handle does not turn

If the handle does not turn after closing the sash, this means that the clutch of the lock with the counter element located on the frame does not work. This problem can be solved in two ways:

  1. Using the adjusting screw located under the lower hinge, slightly move the sash in the direction of the counter part of the lock (Figure 6)
  2. Having slightly loosened the fastening, insert any thin plate of hard material between the counter part of the blocker and the frame.

7. The handle is broken

In order to replace the handle of a plastic window, you need to slightly pull the handle cover towards you and turn it 90 degrees (Figure 12). Next, unscrew the screws, remove the old handle and install a new one in its place, set the trim to its original position.

Figure 12 - The window handle is broken - how to remove and replace?

8. The handle is very difficult to turn

This usually happens due to insufficient lubrication. To prevent such a situation, it is necessary to lubricate the fitting mechanisms at least once a year. For these purposes, you can use aerosol lubricants or machine oil.

It is worth noting that monitoring the technical condition and lubrication of all mechanisms of window fittings must be carried out even in the absence of visible defects at least once a year.

If you are interested adjustment of plastic windows, It's useful to remember that:

  • it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the rubber seals to prevent their wear;
  • if you remove decorative plastic plugs, do it carefully, as they are very fragile; make sure not to deform them or crush them during the main work;
  • if your frame or window opening itself is deformed, you will not be able to adjust the windows yourself;
  • If you are not sure that you can do everything yourself, it is better to entrust the work to a trusted specialist. This way you can be sure that everything is done with high quality and you won’t need to redo anything.

I suggest watching a video that clearly shows how to adjust a plastic window with your own hands.

VIDEO: How to adjust a plastic window (PVC window) with your own hands

It is very important to know how the fittings of plastic windows are adjusted and with what tools.

I'm not even talking about the fact that my house had poorly installed and adjusted plastic windows, which not only didn't open and close well, they also let in cold in the winter and warm air in the summer. Well, tell me, what’s the point of plastic windows anyway? The easiest way to check if they are blown through is to put your hand near the cracks. And also open the Euro package and see if it opens or closes on its own, then this is also considered a defect. In this story you can see how you can adjust the Euro package yourself. They also need to be adjusted to the seasons: summer and winter.

How to adjust plastic windows yourself?

Modern plastic windows, thanks to their current high quality characteristics and ease of use, have easily brought coziness and comfort into our everyday life. This level is achieved not only thanks to high-level sound and heat insulation characteristics, but also thanks to a carefully thought out system of various mechanisms responsible for the quality of operation.

During operation, a system of mechanisms, like any other mechanism, requires periodic maintenance and performance monitoring. In addition, sometimes minor or serious malfunctions may occur, which over time can make it difficult or even impossible to operate the window frame. But most of all the malfunctions that arise during the operation of windows can be eliminated without resorting to professional service, since all this can actually be done with one’s own hands.

Modern window fittings have quite convenient mechanisms with which you can adjust the Euro package. If you have the bare minimum set of tools, then within a couple of minutes you can get your plastic window back into working condition, saving a large amount of money.

Malfunctions during operation of plastic windows

  1. When closing, the door of the Euro package touches the frame from the side or bottom;
  2. the sash does not fit tightly to the frame;
  3. the euro package does not want to close if the window is blocked when the handle is turned to the “closed” mode while the shutter is open;
  4. the window does not want to close when the window sash is closed and the handle is not turned;
  5. handle breakage;
  6. the handle turns, but with difficulty;
  7. opening the sash occurs with great effort.

What tools are needed for repairs?

  • a set of “stars”;
  • pliers;
  • 4 mm hexagon;
  • screwdrivers (flat and Phillips).

A large number of modern windows have in their design the ability to adjust the window parts in three planes at once. This detail makes it possible to achieve the most correct position of the window part in the frame, also providing an optimal level of pressure on the seals absolutely along the perimeter of the window sash.

Individual elements may differ in appearance, depending on the hardware manufacturer. This also applies to adjustment methods and the tools used, but in general specifics, the window sashes adjustment scheme has the following form:

Let's look at what kind of actions need to be performed in order to troubleshoot problems in each of the specific cases:

When closing, the window sash touches the frame from the side or bottom.

Adjusting plastic windows

Now we will move on to direct instructions for adjusting plastic windows. It is necessary to move the sash up or to the side of the upper hinge. To do this you need to do the following:

  1. Open the sash
  2. When using a hexagon, turn the adjusting screw, which is located near the top hinge at the very end of the sash, clockwise three to five turns
  3. Close
  4. Remove the cap from the bottom hinge
  5. Insert a hexagon into the bottom loop and make three to five turns clockwise
  6. Check the free play, and if absolutely necessary, repeat the adjustment until the problem is eliminated.

The window frame does not fit tightly to the frame

You need to move the sash to the location of the hinges. To do this you should:

  1. In the case where the side of the window part only touches the bottom of the frame, then you will only need to move it to the side of the lower hinge. You can do this under the bottom hinge using the adjusting screw.
  2. If the side of the sash touches the frame along its entire height, then it should also be moved to the location of the upper hinge. The course of the manipulation is described in the previous situation.

On the side of the window handle, at the side end of the sash, there is a system of eccentrics that regulates the tightness of the pressure to the sash frame. Externally, they may differ, depending on the manufacturer, but the principle of operation is identical.

You can use pliers or a hexagon to rotate the eccentrics, which can create exactly the degree of pressing of the sash against the frame that you need.

Adjustment summer winter plastic windows

  • If there is an urgent need to adjust the degree of pressing of the sash to the frame from the hinge side, then this should be done using the adjusting screw on the lower hinge.
  • In the case of a tilt-and-turn sash, additional adjustment of the sash pressure by the top hinge is necessary.
  • In order to get to the adjustment bolt located on the scissors at the location of the top hinge, you should open the window, then turn the handle to the ventilation mode, having first pressed the lock.
  • By rotating the blocker clockwise, you press it against the frame, and if you rotate the blocker counterclockwise, on the contrary, you loosen the pressure.

Some types of fittings are adjusted using specially designed responds, which are located on the window frame on the side of the handle.
The position of the responses can be adjusted using hexagons. To ensure stronger pressing of the sash against the frame, you should move the sash closer to the street. On the frame on the side of the window hinges there are clamping mechanisms that are adjusted with a hexagon. The sash will be pressed against the frame more strongly when the tongue is pulled out more strongly.

The window does not close if it is locked when the handle is turned to the “closed” mode while it is open

In order to avoid damage to the hardware mechanisms, the window handle should be turned only when the window sash is closed. To avoid accidental closures, special types of locks are provided that prevent the handle from being turned when the window is open. Such blockers are located under the handle at the end of the sash and come in different types, depending on the manufacturer of the fittings. To unlock the handle, you will need to press the above-mentioned lock.

The window does not want to close when the sash itself is closed and the handle is not turned

If the window is closed, but the handle itself does not turn, this indicates that the locking clutch did not work with the mating element on the frame. There are two ways to resolve this problem:

  1. Move the sash slightly to the side where the counter part of the lock is located, using the adjusting screw located under the bottom hinge.
  2. Loosen the fastening a little and insert a thin plate of some hard material between the window frame and the reciprocal part of the window blocker itself.

In order to replace the handle, you should pull the handle cover slightly towards you and then turn the cover perpendicularly. Then you should unscrew the screws and remove the old window handle. After installing the new handle, the trim should be returned to its original position. Window handles can be purchased either from us or in hardware or construction stores.

The window handle turns, but with difficulty

The most common cause is insufficient lubrication. It is recommended to lubricate the hardware mechanisms once a year or even more often. In such cases, machine oil or aerosol lubricant, for example, WD-40, is used.

I would also like to remind you that even in the absence of obvious defects, the mechanisms should be lubricated and the technical condition of all systems of fitting mechanisms should be monitored once a year or more often.
Despite all the listed elementaryness of the above-mentioned methods for troubleshooting and adjusting the window, it is necessary to begin these manipulations when you clearly understand what exactly needs to be done and how. Otherwise, it would be more advisable to turn to specialists.

Adjusting PVC windows with your own hands is possible only after studying the basics of their design, the principles of operation of the internal mechanical system and subject to knowledge of the rules of this technological process.

PVC windows have gained very wide popularity because they are easy to use, unpretentious in maintenance, and create comfortable conditions of silence and warmth in a house or apartment. They do not require painting or the use of putty or putty, but minimal care is still required.

Windows will last longer if they are installed on time and, if necessary, preventative adjustments are made to their individual elements. To be able to independently cope with all maintenance or minor repair work, you need to know the procedure for performing certain manipulations and have the necessary tools for this.

Tools for work

You need to start the adjustment process by preparing the necessary tools. Standard set for these events:

A simple hex wrench is the main tool for adjustment
  1. Hex key with a size of 4 mm. The easiest way, if you don’t have it in your home arsenal, is to purchase such a key at a furniture fittings store: it costs a penny, but there are a lot of benefits from it.
  2. Screwdriver with a set of bits. Most often, in the adjustment process, cross-shaped types of bit attachments marked TX and T are used.
  3. For some sections of the window, a simple shaped screwdriver with a size of 3-4 mm is suitable;
  4. For lubrication you will need a special WD-40 aerosol or regular machine oil, which is used for sewing machines.
  5. Pliers.

The main regulatory tool is still a hexagon, which is mainly used for assembling furniture, which is why the name “furniture” is assigned to it. Phillips bits on a screwdriver and screwdrivers of the same type are useful for working with bolts that secure almost all hardware elements to the profile. When adjusting sliding window options, adjustments are made distances of roller carriages, which are a fastening for a movable sash.

Pliers will be needed as an auxiliary tool when it is necessary to disassemble some parts.

Adjusting mechanisms

Adjustment of fittings is required mainly in some units that have moving elements, in which malfunctions or breakdowns sometimes occur. It is better to entrust the replacement of fittings to qualified craftsmen, and you can try to solve minor problems yourself. Spare parts for the window system can be purchased from the same manufacturers that assemble the double-glazed windows themselves.

To solve specific problems, it is worth considering various problems that arise during the operation of PVC windows, as well as preventive measures that will help to operate the system longer. The most frequently encountered problems include the following:

  1. The appearance of sagging of door and window sashes.
  2. Difficulty in moving door or window sashes.
  3. Broken tightness (appearance of cracks) of the double-glazed window when the sash is closed.
  4. Difficulties when switching a window from one mode to another.
  5. The need to replace individual elements of fittings when they are severely worn or damaged.
  6. Loose door or window handles.
  7. Handles jammed in any position.
  8. The need to replace one handle with another, for example, one with a safety lock or a built-in lock. This option is installed for safety reasons if there are small children among the residents of the house (apartment).

The basic points for adjusting the window mechanism system are:

— sashes horizontally;

- vertical sashes;

- window sash clamp;

— bottom corner of the window horizontally;

By rotating this screw, you can achieve greater pressing or distance of the lower corner of the sash towards or away from the frame.

By moving the key installed in the desired unit, depending on which direction it is turned, the sash will gradually move.

When moving the sash, turning the key one or half a turn of the screw, you need to close and open the window frame each time, checking its operation. If necessary, turn the screw back a little. It is recommended to move it gradually by one or two millimeters, so as not to accidentally damage one of the system’s mechanisms.

In addition, the fastenings, which are held on bolts with cross-shaped slots, are also subject to adjustment. Therefore, for this process you will need an appropriate screwdriver, which is sometimes used in conjunction with a hexagon. Tools will help you tighten or loosen, or slightly move one of the elements. For example, this is how they regulate:

  • Trunnions, the shift of which will help strengthen or weaken the pressing force of the sash. This process is carried out by switching the double-glazed window to winter or summer mode.

Adjusting or replacing handles

Adjustment or reinstallation of the handle may be required in various situations that can occur during operation of even the highest quality ones.

1. For example, a handle on a door or window may become loose over time, and if this problem is not addressed immediately, it may become jammed, and then it will be even more difficult to figure out. Moreover, this problem can be solved quite easily at the initial stage - it can be called the simplest operation of all adjustment work.

To eliminate this drawback you will need a Phillips screwdriver, which is used to tighten the fasteners. Any handle on double-glazed windows is installed on a masonry that has a top plastic cover, under which the mounting bolts are hidden. To get to them, the cover is turned 90 degrees, and then the bolts are tightened using a Phillips screwdriver. The cover turns easily enough, so do not pry it off with a screwdriver or other sharp tool. This may damage the plastic frame or the lid itself, making it difficult to close or open in the future.

2. Another case that will require intervention in the glass unit mechanism is replacing the handle with a more advanced model that has a safety lock.

This precaution is necessary if there is a small child living in the apartment, who can easily open a regular double-glazed window handle. This is extremely dangerous if the apartment is located above the first floor. The protective mechanism installed on the handle will not allow this to happen.

The process of reinstalling this element is also quite simple. As in the first situation, the top cover turns on the masonry, revealing the fastenings. Then the bolts are unscrewed, the handle swings a little from side to side and is removed.

Then, a new handle with a safety lock is installed. It is important to install it in the same position as the previous one was installed. The handle is fixed to the bolts and the system is checked for functionality. At the end of the work, the decorative cover is put in place.

3. Another one quite common situation when the handle is difficult to turn, or does not reach the desired level when turning it.

Solving this problem is a more difficult task, since this situation has several causes.

  • It is possible that the turning mechanism of the handle requires cleaning and lubrication if the window has been in use for more than one year.
  • It may be that the clamping mechanism is set in an awkward position or is too tight, in which case it should be loosened. In this case, the same processes that have already been mentioned above are applied - the trunnions are adjusted, and the frame adjustment bolts are adjusted on the spring hinges.

4. It also happens that a window cannot be opened because the handle is jammed in one position. There is also a way out of this situation. The reason for this phenomenon is the incorrect operation or failure of the lock, which does not make it possible to change the position of the handle in the open position of the window. In order to correct the situation, you need to manually move the locking lever, and the handle will still turn freely.

The lever is located on the accessible end side of the sash and is a metal plate, which, when the window is open, is moved at a certain angle from the sealing rubber and attached to the end in such a way that it can move.

When carrying out this manipulation, you do not need to unscrew the bolts or remove the handle.

Lubrication of PVC window mechanisms

Not many people know that some unpleasant situations that lead to the need for adjustment arise due to the fact that the moving components and mechanisms of the window located inside the frame were not lubricated in a timely manner.

If PVC windows are used for several years, especially if they are installed in houses located near roads with heavy traffic, then the mechanisms become clogged with dust, which, when mixed with lubricant, turns into dirt. This substance not only makes it difficult for the doors to move smoothly when opening them, as well as to turn the handle. Such a “paste” has a pronounced abrasive effect, which means that the rubbing mechanisms quickly wear out, begin to creak, and then may completely become unusable. In addition, dust deteriorates the rubber seals that ensure tightness, and the windows lose their positive qualities, which means they will have to be replaced over time.

Therefore, it is necessary to periodically clean the mechanisms and replace the lubricant in them, as well as treat the rubber seals so that they do not lose their elasticity. Such processing of all necessary components is carried out at least once a year, but it is better to carry them out immediately after the end of winter, as well as before the onset of cold weather.

For preventive measures, you can use technical oils, which are used to lubricate moving mechanisms. For example, machine oil used for sewing machines may be suitable. In addition, silicone-based lubricant is sometimes used. Special products are also on sale for treating rubber seals and lubricating moving mechanisms. They are produced in plastic bottles with nozzles convenient for lubrication, as well as in cylinders.

The processing process includes the following technological stages:

  • All window sashes are opened and inspected.
  • Then all visible fittings are wiped with a soft cloth, since fresh lubricant must be applied to a dry and clean surface. To clean inaccessible tissue areas, brushes or a sponge are used.
  • The next step is to apply lubricants to the fasteners, latches, bolts, and the rotating mechanism of the handle.

  • It is recommended to use a product produced in cylinders for lubrication, since by spraying the lubricant can penetrate into the most inaccessible corners of the mechanisms.
  • If formulations from bottles are used for lubrication, then it is necessary to apply 2-4 drops to each part, and then let the mechanism work, closing and opening the shutters, as well as turning the handle to different positions.
  • Rubber seals are treated with a compound specially designed for rubber, which will maintain it in an elastic state, preventing it from drying out.
  • For preventive maintenance, you should not use oils that are not intended for the maintenance of mechanisms, for example, herbal or cosmetic ones.
  • It is very important to carry out all lubrication procedures at the same time - this moment will enhance the overall preventive effect.

If you do not forget to carry out lubrication work on time, then all elements of double-glazed windows will serve uninterruptedly for quite a long time.

The mechanisms in PVC windows from all companies are practically identical, therefore the adjustments are carried out for the most part in the same way. The manufacturer usually provides a description of its products and instructions for its use on its website. Therefore, you can always refer to this information if any difficulties arise.

Having prepared the tools and lubricants, you can move on to work that needs to be done without haste, thoroughly understanding the design. If you approach the process responsibly, then it is quite possible to carry it out yourself, and it will not take much time.
