DIY mousetrap - instructions for homemade traps. Properly charging and setting the mouse trap Other types of mousetraps

Mousetraps are a traditional way of getting rid of mice and work great with a small number of rodents. In order for fishing to be effective, you need to choose the right type of trap and the right bait, figure out how to charge the mousetrap and where to install it. Then the pests will not have the slightest chance to survive.

Types of mouse traps

The range of mousetraps is huge, almost all variations cope with their task. It remains to choose whether to kill the mouse or release it, to see the dead animal, whether to touch it or not. Also important are the cost of traps, the ability to buy them in large quantities, as well as safety for children and animals.

Modern mousetraps are mostly mechanical; a spring is used to actuate them, which is capable of slamming the trap with force or quickly closing the door.

with frame

The mechanism in mousetraps with a metal frame, the base is often made of wood, sometimes - from a sheet of metal. A rectangular frame equipped with a spring is fixed in the cocked position with a metal rod, put on a hook. The bait clings to the same hook. The mouse, pulling the bait, releases the frame that kills the animal. After each caught rodent, this trap must be set again.

To charge this mousetrap, you need:

  • put the bait on the hook;
  • with an effort to take the frame back 180 °;
  • holding the frame with one hand, turn the rod with the other and put a hook on its edge;
  • carefully release the frame.

Since it is not easy to properly charge this type of mousetrap, you will have to practice several times. The trap does not work if the hook is not on the very edge of the rod. The bait must be hard enough so that the rodent has to tinker and thereby start the mechanism.

Wooden mousetraps are not very successful from the point of view of hygiene - the blood and urine of rodents are absorbed into the wood, and bacteria multiply over time. A metal mousetrap is much better in this regard - it is easy to wash and treat with antiseptics.

with loop

A looped rodent trap is the simplest mousetrap. It is a wooden or plastic bar with one or more minks. Inside the hole there is a noose made of elastic wire, which is fixed with a thread. In the depths - top dressing. The mouse, trying to get to the food, gnaws through the thread, frees the wire and dies in a stranglehold.

To install this mousetrap, you need to thread a thread through the holes with a long needle or wire, bend the wire with a loop and tie a strong knot on top so that the noose is held by the thread in the lower position.

Traps

The device of this mousetrap is similar to traps for large animals, but the mouse trap is smaller and is located horizontally. Arcs are usually made of plastic, equipped with teeth around the perimeter. To set the trap, press the clip from behind, put the bait on the plate inside and release the clip. Similar traps are also available for rats, they are larger than mouse traps and equipped with a stronger spring.

There is also a humane mousetrap based on the same principle. It is much longer and top dressing is located in the depth of the structure. The jaws close when the mouse is fully inside, so it does not take damage.

Cells

The mousetrap cage is a box of metal rods with a door that slams shut with a spring. This design is called a live trap, more often it is used to catch larger animals - minks, muskrats, raccoons. You can catch a rat in such a cage. The live trap for mice is the smallest of them, but it is also arranged: in the middle of the box there is a hook, on one end of which the bait is put on, and on the other it holds the spring.

Swing

Another trap that does not harm the rodent is based on the swing principle. The design of the mousetrap is extremely simple, based on a long rectangular box, curved in the center like a boomerang. You need to install the trap so that the part that is closer to the entrance is in a horizontal position. The door in this case is fixed in the open form. Having reached the edge of the mousetrap, the mouse outweighs the swing, the door is released and slammed shut.

Pipes

The principle of operation of traps made in the form of pipes is that I don’t see, I don’t touch. They are designed for people who are afraid of mice or are disgusted by them. The mouse, running into a plastic opaque tube, is killed by a blow to the head or simply fixed inside with a slamming lid. You can shake it out of the trap without touching it and without seeing the animal.

Electrical traps

The most convenient rodent trap to use is an electric mousetrap. It does not need to be charged, human participation is minimal, just put the bait and plug the cord into the outlet. The mouse, getting inside, closes the contacts with its paws and instantly dies from a current discharge. Unlike mechanical models, which may not work at the right time, the electronic mousetrap has a 100% efficiency.

On the device there are light bulbs that indicate whether the trap is free or a rodent has already fallen into it. In some models, signal diodes are located at the end of a long cord so that you can push the mousetrap deep under the sofa and control the catching of mice without removing the device.

Destruction systems

Reusable electronic traps are called rodent extermination systems. Without a doubt, this is the best mousetrap - a small plastic box is equipped with an electric chamber and an overturning bottom. The instructions describe in detail the principle of operation - after the destruction of the mouse automatically appears in the container, and the trap is ready to work again. In the morning, all that remains is to remove the container and shake the pests out of it.

The use of destruction systems has only one drawback - their cost. For the price paid for one device, you can buy a hundred fairly effective simple mousetraps.

Bait selection

The right bait is the basis of successful rodent control. Even the best traps will be powerless if the mouse is not interested in the food offered. The prevailing opinion that mice are madly in love with cheese is not true. This product is far down the list of rodent preferences, the first lines are occupied by completely different baits.

A list of what to put in a mousetrap to lure a mouse is guaranteed:

  • sunflower unrefined little on a piece of bread;
  • delicious-smelling bread and fragrant pastries;
  • sunflower seeds and peanuts;
  • pieces of bacon, slightly charred on fire;
  • pumpkin seeds;
  • smoked sausage.

For traps without a trigger, you can use industrial mousetrap attractants, they are made on the basis of food products with the addition of odorous substances that attract rodents.

The rodent does not pay attention to the bait in the mousetrap if it does not suit his tastes. In this case, the product must be replaced. Also, mice do not react to something tasty in a charged trap when they have access to human food - loosely covered food containers or a bunch of crumbs on the table and under their feet. You need to touch the mousetraps only with gloves, so there will be no human smell on them that can alert the mouse.

Installation locations

In rooms where children and pets live, it is better not to catch mice with open-type devices, since there is always a chance that a non-rodent will be caught at all. Loop traps are also not the best option - thin wire easily cuts the skin. In these cases, it is better to put a cage mousetrap or models of a similar action made of plastic pipes and boxes.

You can catch rodents anywhere in the apartment, even in remote corners they will still come across from time to time, but for greater efficiency, the installation of the selected mousetrap is carried out on the paths of pests from nests to products.

Mice prefer to hide under cabinets, in drawers, between furniture, in floor and wall cavities.

Modern renovation with an abundance of drywall is a dream for any rodent. The nest can also be located outside the house - in an adjacent shed or garage, in the attic, in the basement, in a bush or a pile of branches near the wall, in the crevices of the foundation. Then minks lead into the room - small holes near the floor. You can also determine where the mice are by the left excrement and spoiled products.

Traps are placed near these places along the baseboards and between furniture. It is better if there are several mousetraps, since mice are caught mainly at night, and it will not be possible to immediately recharge the devices.

Getting rid of mice and rats in the house is not so easy, because. these rodents are fertile and survive even in extreme conditions. If you do not have pets or children in your apartment, then it is better to use mousetraps. And those who have a large family, which includes pets, can choose a model of a mousetrap that will not harm the pets, but will help get rid of rats and mice.

The mousetrap is a centuries-old remedy for rodents

Where to put mousetraps

If there are a lot of people at home during the day, it is better to put mousetraps at night. Rats and mice do not like to come out of their holes during the day. You can find out that they were in the apartment by the excrement that they leave in their places of residence. Rodents do not like open spaces, so they move along the walls. There you need to place mousetraps.

To get into the apartment, they make holes with a diameter of 4 cm or use any holes, even the size of a coin. Walk through the kitchen, carefully inspect all the walls, dark corners. If you find a mink, place a mousetrap near it. Sometimes rodents run after household appliances, behind furniture. Set the traps near the holes or along the wall, at a distance of 60-90 cm from each other. You can put one under the oven, in the pan section.

How to charge

What is the best mousetrap and how to charge it before use? You can choose any trap. But work carefully, use gloves. Rats and mice have sensitive noses. If the mousetrap itself or the bait smells like a person, they will not fit them.

Mechanical mousetrap

This is a simple design that is not expensive and is sold at any hardware store. It can be metal, which is suitable for catching rats, because. the most reliable. Mice are caught with wood. To catch rodents, it must be charged. It will be difficult to do this the first time, so be careful, because. she hurts her fingers.

This mousetrap consists of:

  1. Trigger (1).
  2. Clamp (2).
  3. Holder (3).

To charge the mousetrap, take the bait and put it on the trigger (it must be securely fastened, otherwise the mouse will drag it and run away). Then we take the clamp and gently cock it. You need to put a holder on it and insert it into the trigger so that the holder slides off at the slightest touch. Now it remains only to put it where there are a lot of rats and mice.

How does a mousetrap work? The rodent touches the bait and touches the trigger. At this point, the holder slides off and releases the clamp. He slams shut and presses the mouse. If the mousetrap is not fixed, and a large rat gets into it, it can drag it with it.

Mousetrap design: the mouse pulls the trigger and the trap slams shut

Other types of mousetraps

  1. Live trap for mice. It's even easier to charge. A bait is placed in a special hole, the structure itself is placed on a level place. As soon as the mouse is caught in the mousetrap, the trap closes. She does not kill the rodent, but catches it, you can then release the mouse away from home.
  2. Electric mousetraps. They are powered by electricity. It is opened and placed along the plinth. The bait is placed inside. The mouse runs inside and receives a powerful electric shock that kills it. Before that, the mousetrap slams shut.
  3. Cells, containers. The bait is placed in a special device. This device helps to catch live mice or rats.

All these species do not need to be charged, it is enough to put the bait in a specially designated place.

If the mousetrap smells like a person, the mouse will not approach it.

Types of lures

What food is better to use as bait at home, what do these rodents like? We are taught from childhood that mice and rats prefer cheese. In fact, most rodents are indifferent to cheese. How to lure them into a trap?

  1. Salo. Choose fragrant chunks of smoked or salted lard. Old, rancid pieces will not attract mice. To make the delicacy more appetizing, before putting it in a mousetrap, “fry” it a little on a match.
  2. Vegetable oil. Any will do, but the best is unrefined sunflower. They need to anoint a piece of bread. If you have sesame oil in your house, it is also suitable, this smell strongly attracts rodents.
  3. Bread and pastries. It is good if it is bran bread with a strong smell. Choose pastries fresh and fragrant.
  4. grains. Mice and rats are not indifferent to seeds and cereals. You can fill the trap with seeds, wheat, buckwheat or rice.
  5. Smoked sausage. Its aroma may attract rodents, but they prefer natural products.

The fight against mice has been going on since time immemorial, the very first "weapons" were mousetraps. Ready-made are sold in specialized stores, are made. The important question remains how to set up a mousetrap so that rodents fall into a trap.

Location selection

The presence of mice is indicated by a specific smell, excrement, sawdust, dust from wood, plastic, holes in grain bags, gnawed vegetables, and fruits. It is advisable to determine the location of the hole, nest, observe where the pests come from.

Mice always move along well-known, familiar routes. Marked with faeces, urine. They recognize their tracks by smell, color, as urine glows in the dark. If you manage to determine the trajectory, no big trick is needed - they set a trap against the movement, and that's it.

In other cases, you just need to install mousetraps in the intended places of movement. Rodents love to run along baseboards, under walls, crawl onto window sills, cabinets.

The mouse will not be caught if the room is noisy; it makes no sense to build a mousetrap during the day. The war is waged at night, when pests intensify their activities. An exception is if the room is always twilight.

Varieties of traps

Instructions for using a mousetrap depend on its design, as well as the place where you have to wage war.

  • The plastic bottle trap can be used in the garden, garden, cellar. The instruction manual does not contain specific rules. It is enough to dig into the ground, or fix it under a slope near the steps, shelves. When a mouse gets into a homemade mousetrap, it stays inside, cannot get out because of the slippery walls, which are pre-lubricated with vegetable oil.
  • A trap from a bucket of water does not have to be placed under the wall, it can be done in the middle of the room. To get the mouse into the mousetrap, you need to use fragrant bait, try to remove other food supplies from the house or room. Grass, leaves, straw, husks are placed on top of the water. Add a little vegetable oil, scatter grain, seeds. A stick is substituted for the bucket, it will act as a ladder.
  • A mechanical trap is convenient because it kills a rodent immediately or mortally injures. How to charge a mousetrap, there is an instruction. Install in the chosen place, fix the bait. Move the pin away from the spring. Bend the bracket, fix.

On a note!

When using mechanical or the location of the structure must be changed periodically. Otherwise, the mice will learn a new trajectory and will not get caught.

The sticky trap is especially popular. A special substance is applied to a dense base - cardboard, a piece of plastic, oilcloth, plywood. Fixed to a hard surface. has an instant fixation, does not dry out within 1-2 weeks from the moment of application. The substance is applied in a continuous line with an interval between stripes of 2 cm. To catch mice, a 10 * 20 cm mousetrap is sufficient. The trap is placed in those places where rodents were seen. Preferably near a hole, nest.

On a note!

A sticky mousetrap is used to control rodents in the garden. The bark of trees is processed to a height of up to 50 cm from the surface of the earth. The trap protects from rodents, harmful insects.

If the mouse does not come across, an error has been made somewhere. Instructions for using mousetraps:

  • Rodents love the twilight, but they run to places where the light falls. You can install a mousetrap. Point a flashlight at it with a subdued light.
  • To catch mice, you need. Small rodents love cheese, seeds, grains, cereals, bread, cookies. Sausage, meat, lard are eaten, but without much enthusiasm. This bait is more suitable for rats.
  • You need to check the mousetrap often. The caught killed animal scares off the rest, the mice will begin to explore another territory. A live mouse in a trap will warn others of the danger with a restless squeak.

If there are a lot of mice in the room, you need to alternate several different methods of struggle. It is possible to cope with a large army of rodents.

They cause disgust or fear, in addition, they are carriers of a number of diseases, eat food and spoil surrounding objects. The device for catching rats and mice described in this article will help to solve the problem on your own. A mousetrap will be made with your own hands using improvised means.

In situations where it is undesirable to use poisons, because children or pets live indoors, and there is no time to purchase store traps, you can try to make a mousetrap with your own hands. The process is quite simple and does not require sophisticated equipment and skills. You will need paper, different containers (buckets, plastic bottles of different sizes) and household items that are in almost every home (wire, small pieces of wood, a school ruler, plastic bottles).

Many improvised traps are able to work autonomously, without recharging, and are designed to be triggered multiple times. Such mousetraps can be left when leaving home from the dacha (the main thing is not to leave the mousetrap for a long time, in order to avoid the appearance of a fetid odor). In a few days, there will be no trace of mice left, and nothing will have to be done or bought.

A little about bait

For the manufacture of a mousetrap to be productive, it is not enough to know how to make it correctly. Hunting cannot be successful without the desire of the mouse to go in the required direction, and only bait can provide it.

The opinion that mice are crazy about cheese is wrong and more related to stereotypes than reality. They do eat it, and most likely they like it, but there are much better types of bait for mousetraps:

  • Fragrant grains such as sunflower seeds
  • Fried bacon or sausage (especially blood sausage);
  • Dry bread dipped in vegetable oil (sesame will definitely not leave the mouse indifferent).

Varieties of mousetraps made independently

Mice have accompanied mankind throughout its history and during this period people have come up with a lot of ways and devices to deal with them. Modern technologies have expanded this arsenal, but some old solutions are still relevant.

Plastic bottle

There are several ways to make a mousetrap from a plastic bottle, consider the most famous and simple:

  • We cut the bottle 3 cm from the middle closer to the neck;
  • We put the bait at the bottom;
  • Remove the cork and lubricate the inner surface of the neck with oil;
  • We insert the neck down into the second part and fasten both halves with glue or wire.

The mouse, smelling food, penetrates into the bottle easily reaching the bait through the oiled hole, and can no longer get out on its own.

An alternative way to make a mouse trap:

  • We find a container with a neck diameter sufficient for the mouse to penetrate inside;
  • We tie a thread of sufficient length to the neck so that its other edge can be tied to something without stretch;
  • We put the bait at the bottom and put the container on the edge of the table so that it overturns with a slight change in the mass of the hanging part.

The mousetrap works as follows: the mouse, smelling the smell of food, climbs into the bottle and provokes its overturning with its weight. Since the container is tied by the neck, it hangs on a rope, and the mouse will not go anywhere from such a situation. In addition, it will remain alive, so that it is also a humane method of controlling rodents.

Electro mousetrap

Unlike the previous one, this method does not differ in humanity. The electronic mousetrap works on the following principle:

  • We attach one of the wires to the metal plate (the metal should not be painted);
  • We coat the second wire with something edible for the mouse and smelling strongly, for example, peanut butter.
  • We connect the device to the network in such a way that the phase is with the bait, otherwise the mouse will immediately feel a small discharge and may change its mind to go further.

Bucket with water

A mousetrap from a bucket of water is made quite simply and there are a great many variations of it. Let's consider one of them:

  • We put a wire or a metal rod on top of the bucket (the welding electrode is the best option), it is advisable to fix it in order to prevent displacement or falling into the bucket;
  • We place some flat and oblong object perpendicular to the rod, for example, a school ruler. The ruler with one edge rests on the top of the bucket, the other is above the water.
  • To make it work at home, you need to put the bait on the edge of the ruler, which is above the water, and make it easier to lift the mouse to the top of the bucket by substituting a board for it.

Catching occurs as follows: the mouse follows the ruler for food, and at some point the ruler overturns under its weight. In addition to the ruler, you can use any object, for example, a tunnel made of rolled paper.

Another simple mousetrap using a bucket:

  • A plastic bottle is pierced with a thin metal rod through the bottom and neck;
  • Food of interest to the mouse is attached to its middle;
  • The rod is placed on the bucket so that the bottle is in the middle of the bucket;

The mouse goes for food and as soon as it stands on the bottle, it scrolls, and the mouse falls into the bucket.

Bank with a coin

A very simple and effective mousetrap can be made not only from a can, but also using any other suitable container, such as a saucepan.

  1. We attach the bait to the inner surface of the jar at a distance of about 4–5 cm from the neck (can be attached to adhesive tape);
  2. The jar is placed upside down and a coin or button is placed under one edge of the neck for support.

If a mouse is wound up at home, it will definitely try to take the bait, and since the support is very sensitive (this can be seen in the process of placing the can on a coin), the can will certainly cover the rodent.

Adhesive

Do-it-yourself glue mousetrap is quite simple. To do this, you will need: special glue, the basis for its application and bait.

The base is lubricated with special glue for mice, which is sold at specialized points of sale. There is nothing complicated in the functioning of this trap, made by yourself. On the way to food, a base smeared with glue is placed. The animal tries to overcome it and sticks to the base.

The method will be of interest primarily to those who vehemently hate mice. The reason is his complete anti-humanity towards them. A rodent caught in such a trap is in for a long torment. He will not die right away, but will try to free himself for a long time, wriggling and food on the sticky trap that bound him. And all in vain - it is impossible to get rid of the glue even with the help of a person. In general, the method is not for the faint of heart.

Bank and sheet of paper

In addition to the jar, any container can be used. Also, you will need a sheet of paper, rope and bait. The tricky trap is done like this:

  1. We prepare a paper sheet, for this we cut it from the center to the edges, so that in the middle it looks like a cross from cuts (there should be no obvious hole).
  2. We cover the container with the prepared sheet, so that the center of the cuts is located above the middle of the container.
  3. We tie the bait over the center of the whole structure and wait.

The mouse or rat will go for food and when it is in the area of the cut paper, it will fall into the container. The disadvantage of this method is that it works without misfires only with young individuals. An adult mouse, especially one that has had experience of getting into such situations, feels the danger and does not go further.

High-tech, computerized mousetrap

This marvel of technology uses several sensors to detect a rodent. A foreign developer, whose name is Jake Easton, thought of doing this. This homemade trap works as follows:

  • Special acoustic and visual sensors, having found a mouse in the reach zone, set in motion the operating lever of the device, under which the bait is located;
  • The mouse goes to the smell of the bait, and when it finds itself in the sensor triggering zone, the pneumatic drive starts up, which beats the unsuspecting mouse with a metal bracket with a force of up to 50 kg.

The result is the same as when a conventional spring mousetrap is triggered. The availability of computer technology has not made rodent control more humane. Jake Easton called his invention "Better Mousetrap", which translates from English as the best mousetrap.

Wooden

A fairly simple and safe trap for others, but to make it you will need a drill, drills, a hacksaw and some skill in working with these tools. Step by step:

  1. From a tree we cut out a bar with a section of 40x40 mm and a length of 100 mm.
  2. We drill a hole in it from the end to the entire length of the bar (but not through), with a diameter of 25 mm.
  3. At a distance of 10 mm from the end with a hole, we make a slit (2–3 mm) on top in such a way as to partially open the hole.
  4. Immediately after the slot (3 mm), we drill two through holes side by side so that the thread passed through them blocks the path to the end of the drilled cavity.
  5. On the edge of the bar, opposite the entrance to the trap, we attach a spring with a loop opposite the slot.

The wooden mousetrap is ready to use. Catching mice is as follows:

  1. We put the bait in the deaf edge of the mousetrap.
  2. We lower the loop into the slot so that it matches the diameter of the hole and fix the spring with a thread.

The principle of operation is simple: the mouse tries to get to the bait and gnaws through the thread, the spring works and clamps the mouse with a loop. This version of the mousetrap is reusable, in addition, there are "apartment" designs.

Conclusion

Using all of the above methods of trapping and destroying harmful rodents, it will not be difficult to put into practice one of them. All you need is a minimum of improvised means and a little patience. If the options seem not humane enough, you can entrust the matter to nature and get a good cat.

The problem of any structure during the period of cold weather (especially) is the relocation of rodents to "winter apartments". , but the most effective, good old way with a simple mousetrap. Here the most effective mousetrap type "Mink". Since it is not difficult to make it, especially since the drawings are given, it seems that this design will help you. Everyone can find a suitable bar and drill holes in it, but the most important thing is to set the correct distance from the location of the thread that holds the "yoke" of the trapping loop from the end of the entrance to the mink. Although first things first…

This mousetrap works flawlessly. Gnawing through the thread, the mouse does not have time to jump back and is caught. Also, in a mousetrap, you can make not three “jobs”, but as many as you like. But I think that the best option is a three-hole mousetrap. You can make several mousetraps and arrange them in different places. Usually, mice from the street begin to climb into the house at the beginning of winter, but as they say - prepare a sled in the summer.

How to make a mousetrap?

To make such a mousetrap, you will need a wooden block measuring 40x120x90 mm with a flat and smooth surface. It is necessary to mark the position of the centers of the trapping holes. With the first drill with a diameter of 22 mm, drill blind holes for a length of 80 mm. Stepping back from the end by 25 mm, drill two holes perpendicular to the trapping holes for the passage with a drill with a diameter of 1.5-2 mm. They must pass by dividing the diameter of the trapping hole into three equal parts. These are the pass holes. Make a longitudinal one at a distance of 6 mm from the end and a width of 4 mm to a depth of 32 mm. On the ends and between the holes on the PVA glue "plant" the squares. Polymer adhesives cannot be used - their smell will scare away rodents.

From spring wire with a diameter of 2 mm, wind a spring with a diameter of 30 mm in 2.5 turns, leaving one end of a straight section 50 mm long (pin), the other 80 mm long (rocker arm). At the end of the rocker, bend a ring (from bottom to top) with a diameter of 6-8 mm. This is a ring for attaching a trap loop through an extension cord.

Center the spring in the hole with the ring above the groove and mark the position of the pin. Drill a hole with a diameter of 1.8 mm and drive in the pin until the spring contacts the block.

From a wire with a diameter of 1 mm, make a trapping ring with a diameter of 24 mm and attach it to the rocker ring with an extension with a ring, thus creating a movable connection. The rocker must be in a horizontal position when connected. After that, unbend the spring so that the catch ring under the action of the spring extends beyond the cut.

How to charge a mousetrap.

It remains to give advice on charging the mousetrap and laying the bait. As a bait, it is best to use seeds lightly fried in vegetable oil or small pieces of old fat.
You need to lay with a wooden spatula, as rodents easily catch the smell of a person.

For the convenience of charging the mousetrap, make a cork with a diameter of 20 mm. Insert it through the trapping ring and the trapping hole. With a large needle with a thick thread, pass it through the block, covering the rocker and block through two small holes. Tie the thread at the top of the rocker in a knot so that it is taut. Pull out the cork. The mousetrap is ready for action.
