Do-it-yourself eternal log from a pipe. Log "Chimney sweep": reviews, instructions

The article contains an interesting and effective way to organize a hearth using logs. The article presents different methods for constructing a vertical combustion furnace from logs. You will also find photo instructions for creating a wood burner with your own hands.

In the previous article, we talked about stoves, which are based on the effect of pyrolysis (combustion of gases). Pyrolysis can be successfully used to organize disposable stoves directly from fuel - wooden logs and logs of 40-80 cm.

The described option has advantages:

  • the ability to cook / reheat food without additional (iron) devices, except for a kettle or frying pan;
  • profitability - one log burns for 3-4 hours;
  • good light;
  • quick organization - no need to collect thin firewood.

Along with the advantages, there are characteristic disadvantages:

  • you need exactly sawn-off lumps or logs;
  • in some cases a saw or wire is needed;
  • disposable oven.

In the future, the advantages and disadvantages will be given in relation to other varieties. Such a vertical fire is popularly called a "candle".

Method number 1. Finnish candle

This option is suitable if it is possible to use a chainsaw. The chock needs to be cut by dividing the cut circle into equal parts, ideally 6 parts. Do not cut the cuts to the end, so that an untouched section of the tree ("bottom") remains. Then split the core with an ax, add fuel and lubricants (oil, gasoline, diesel fuel) and set it on fire.

Advantages:

  • manufacturing time - 10 minutes, you can make several "candles" in one hour;
  • safety - the bottom will not allow dry grass on the ground to ignite;
  • the fire does not damage the soil even after complete burnout;
  • high bright flame;
  • gives a lot of warmth and light;
  • portable design.

Disadvantages:

  • burns out quickly (2.5-3 hours);
  • difficult to ignite;
  • need a chainsaw.

Method number 2. Finnish candle-2

The chop should be split into 4 equal pieces to make equal logs. They need to be installed in their original form (in the form of a chock) and ignited in the middle. You can pick up a tree from a woodpile.

In fact, it is a miniature copy of the three-log oven. The principle is the same, the advantages and disadvantages are the same.

Method number 3. Three logs

Universal vertical one-time long burning oven. To organize the hearth, only three adjacent chocks are required. Then you just need to make a fire inside the formed well. After burning, the chocks can be moved closer to the center. This type of wooden stove combines all the advantages, practically without any disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • simplicity of the device - no need to additionally prepare the material;
  • optimal balance of light and heat;
  • burning time without adding fuel - up to 7 hours;
  • stability.

Disadvantages:

  • less wind resistance;
  • the logs must be evenly split.

Method number 4. Primus

The most perfect and convenient way to organize a log oven. It gives a high concentration of flame and can be made in a "mini-version" with a height of 20-30 cm. In order to organize a "Primus", you will need several logs, and not necessarily from one chock.

Operating procedure:

We cut off a chock of a given size.

We divide it into 4-6 parts with an ax or a saw, or select suitable logs.

We gouge out the core and make notches (shavings).

We connect the logs with wire so that a "well" is formed inside. If the logs are large, you can make 2 of them shorter than the rest. This will provide oxygen for the pyrolysis during the installation of the pot or pan.

The cold hearth before kindling should look like this:

We load the shavings into the free space inside the stove.

We set it on fire and use it. Pay attention to the flame - pure pyrolysis combustion.

Larger options can be used for general purposes.

The optimal length of a log (lumps) is two of its diameters. The ability to cook food, boil water is available for the first 2 hours after lighting, until the logs burn out.

How a disposable oven can be useful on the farm

The main property of a wooden stove is combustion of pyrolysis gases, which makes it an effective reactor when creating a stove in the yard, barbecue, cauldron or barbecue. A concentrated flame can be used to warm up and roast metal or slaughtered poultry - pyrolysis combustion for 2-3 hours is a lot. A dense flame will melt cold lumpy bitumen or roofing material for roofing work many times faster than a regular fire, and will replace a propane burner (portable version) in an upright position.

The principle of organizing the stove "Finnish candle" described above is an economical and convenient way to heat and create an impromptu camp or courtyard kitchen. He will be able not only to save time and effort, but even save lives in the event of an unforeseen stay (overnight) in a remote area.

Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves are rarely used in modern homes for heating due to the fact that high-tech methods of keeping heat are much faster, more convenient and do not require such physical costs. But, despite this, fireplaces do not lose their popularity, creating a unique emotional atmosphere in country houses or city apartments.

One of the important procedures to ensure the safe use of a wood-burning stove or fireplace is to regularly clean the chimney. This is required regardless of the design of the chimney, through the wall or through the roof. Why clean the chimney and how often should it be done? How effectively can this procedure be carried out using a chimney cleaner "Chimney sweep"?

Why you need to clean the chimney

To understand why it is necessary to clean the chimneys of stoves and fireplaces from soot, first of all, you need to know what happens in the chimney when using any type of solid fuel material, including firewood. When a fire burns in a fireplace or stove, so-called combustion products, soot and soot are actively released. All this, together with the smoke, gets upstairs, directly into the chimney chimneys and settles in a soft greasy layer on the walls of the chimney. The more time has passed since the last cleaning, the less space is left for fume extraction and

Of course, correct operation, as well as adherence to simple principles for the selection of firewood for a stove or fireplace, can significantly slow down this process:

  • You do not need to burn anything in the stove (fireplace) except firewood. It is better to try to dispose of any household waste, even paper waste, in other ways.
  • Choose firewood exclusively for those tree species that contain a minimum of resin. These are, for example, dry wood of alder, aspen, oak, birch. Firewood from fruit trees, which are so loved for their amazing aroma, released during combustion, is slightly worse in quality. Outsiders on this list, experts consider conifers, which emit a large amount of soot, due to the high content of natural resins. It is also not recommended to often use not the most expensive, but quickly burning out poplar and willow.
  • Do not forget about regular cleaning of the blower.

Compliance with all of the above, together with prevention, will allow you to avoid serious blockage of the chimney for years. But, despite this, cleaning the stove (fireplace) pipe still cannot be avoided. In addition to the settling soot, blockage can form from the outside if debris or a foreign object gets into the pipe. Therefore, professionals involved in the repair and cleaning of the chimney often recommend checking the chimney in the fall and spring.

How to understand that you need to clean the chimney? The first sign that the procedure cannot be postponed will be a visible deterioration in traction. The release of the main amount of smoke and smell not through the chimney, but into the room, sparks flying from the fireplace - a signal that the chimney is dirty. Draft, slow and insufficient, not only creates smoke, but can also lead to intoxication with carbon monoxide components. In addition, a spark emitted from the fireplace can cause a fire or injury.

What else is so dangerous about a polluted chimney? Combustion of accumulated soot can easily lead to cracking and destruction of the chimney walls. The conclusion that can be reached on the basis of all of the above: chimney cleaning is an important procedure, on the thoroughness and regularity of which the good operation of stoves and fireplaces depends, as well as the safety of the house.

Cleaning methods

Depending on what means are used to clean the chimneys of stoves and fireplaces from soot, all methods of removing dirty sediment from the chimney can be divided into three groups:

  • The oldest known method is mechanical, or traditional chimney cleaning. The procedure is carried out with the help of special "chimney sweep tools": various brushes and "core", a rope with a heavy weight to break through the blockage. Despite the outward primitiveness, such cleaning of chimneys of stoves and fireplaces from soot gives the best effect and allows you to cope with the most advanced types of blockage of the chimney.
  • Thermal cleaning is also a rather old method, proven over the years. It consists in “burning out” the soot by heating it with well-dried pine wood. Technically, making a fire and waiting for the result is the easiest and most inexpensive way. But also the most dangerous: with a large accumulation of soot, a fire in the chimney is practically a small explosion. A pipe, especially a masonry pipe that has small cracks, may simply fall apart. Therefore, experts advise using this method only as a preventive measure, provided that a large amount of soot and soot has not had time to settle in the chimney.
  • Chemical (non-mechanical) cleaning. Considering the use of such a tool as a chimney sweep log for cleaning a stove (fireplace) pipe, reviews of which are found in most construction forums, it is worth considering chemical methods in more detail. Applying the chemical properties of substances for dissolving or drying soot in a chimney began many decades ago, with the so-called folk remedies. For example, the most famous life hack invented by our great-grandfathers is burning potato peelings. Also, the chimney was often cleaned out by pouring ordinary salt onto the hot firewood. Today, along with folk remedies, a huge number of modern products of chemical laboratories have appeared in stores, designed for cleaning chimney chimneys in a non-mechanical way. Such products are available in the form of pressed bars (or logs), as well as in the form of dry powdery masses. It differs from traditional methods of modern "chemistry" by the need to strictly follow the instructions and observe the dosage, as well as the smaller amount of the substance used at a time.

The "Chimney sweep" log, which is often recommended on construction sites on the Internet, belongs to the means of chemical cleaning. What is this product and how should it be used to effectively get rid of soot deposits in the chimney?

Log "Chimney sweep": what is it

What is a patented non-mechanical chimney cleaning solution? Its brand name is "Log Chimney Sweep" (reviews of this tool are given below). Externally, it is a pressed bar, 25x8x6 cm in size, wrapped in a protective paper wrapper. Sold in original packaging containing product information and procedure instructions.

The product is recommended for cleaning any type of chimney and chimney, even a complex structure, for example, a curved chimney through a wall. The substances that make up the logs, during combustion, emit volatile chemicals that enter the chimney along with smoke and hot air and affect the layer of soot that has accumulated there. As a result, the impurities in the chimney dry up and fall off the walls of the chimney.

The "Chimney sweep" log is intended for fireplaces or stoves using coal or wood raw materials. It is strictly forbidden to use this product in ovens equipped with special devices, as well as operating on gas or electricity.

Important! Often the question arises as to whether a tool such as a chimney sweep log can completely replace mechanical cleaning. Reviews of professionals about this tool warn: such cleaning can only be of a preventive nature. The use of logs for a long time eliminates the need to contact a specialist who is engaged in cleaning the chimney. However, it will not be possible to completely abandon mechanical cleaning.

The composition of the tool "Chimney sweep"

The log "Chimney sweep" is declared by the manufacturers as a product that is safe for humans and pets. As part of artificial woods:

  • Charcoal wax (low carbon dust content).
  • Natural wood sawdust.
  • Natural substances: urea and amorphous silica.
  • Ammonium sulfate is a substance that, in fact, is a compound of sulfuric acid and is actively used for industrial needs. Including, in order to disinfect water in city water supply systems.
  • Sodium sulfate (anhydrous), another commonly used sulfuric acid compound (sodium salt). In addition to industrial purposes, this substance is officially a food additive, and was previously used in pharmacology.
  • Substances in the composition that can cause concern - and in concentrated form, both are contraindicated for contact with the mucous membranes of the eyes and human skin. Therefore, it is not necessary to remove the log from the protective paper shell. Better yet, protect yourself with ordinary rubber gloves.

Preparing for the procedure

To ensure safety, before cleaning the chimney with the "Chimney sweep" logs, preparatory actions should be carried out.

First of all, you need to inspect the chimney to check if the pipe is clogged with foreign debris. If a blockage is found in the chimney, the use of logs should be abandoned in favor of a mechanical cleaning method.

Do I need to lay firewood together with the logs "Chimney sweep"

The use of the "Chimney sweep" tool is quite acceptable without "support" in the form of coals or wood firewood. However, hot coals left over from the previous fireplace insert (stove) or dry firewood placed before cleaning the chimney with the Chimney Sweep log will greatly enhance the effect of using this tool. When cleaning the chimney with a log "Chimney sweep" in combination with firewood (coals), the bar is laid out on top.

Forbidden! Burn more than one log in combination with hot coals.

Instructions for use

How to use the chimney sweep log correctly and safely? The instruction is posted on the branded packaging of the product:

  • Remove the log from the original packaging, without unrolling the protective wrapper, and put it in the firebox. Set fire to paper wrapper on both sides.
  • In a closed stove, cover the door leaves; in a fireplace, use a protective grate.
  • Wait until the bar has completely burned out (about 90 minutes).
  • Remains (ash) of the bar should be left in the fireplace for the entire duration, about 1-2 weeks. During this time, you can use the stove (fireplace) as usual.
  • After the procedure, it is recommended to ventilate the room.

The last stage of cleaning

It will be necessary to thoroughly clean the stove (fireplace) two weeks after using the "Chimney sweep" log. During this time, all active substances will have time to exert the maximum possible effect on the deposits in the chimney. The soot softened by their action falls down.

At this stage, it is important to scoop out the fallen off soot from the bend of the chimney, the firebox of the smoke damper and other accessible elements of the fireplace (stove), the chimney will need to be inspected again. Fireplaces with curved chimney ducts need to be cleaned especially, otherwise the remaining soot can clog the chimney.

To remove cleaning waste, tools available to everyone are well suited: a vacuum cleaner and an ordinary fireplace brush.

How much money is required for one cleaning

Another question that may arise for a person who uses the Chimney Sweep for the first time: how many logs do you need to burn at one time for more efficient cleaning? Manufacturers recommend burning one log for regular cleaning, and two for wide chimneys, but one after the other, and not simultaneously. It is allowed to lay two logs in one burnout for the first cleaning or removal of a large layer of settled dirt. But this should be done carefully, observing all fire safety measures.

How often should the cleaning be carried out with the help of "Chimney sweep" logs

It is recommended to carry out the cleaning procedure by the manufacturer of the "Chimney sweep" agent regularly, at least twice a year. The frequency of cleaning largely depends on the frequency of use of the stove or fireplace. For example, if the fireplace is heated once daily, it is sufficient to carry out preventive cleaning twice a season, using one block at a time. If the fireplace (stove) is heated no more than once a week, one log is enough for the heating season.

How can you heat the stove?

Despite the emergence of new types of boilers and stoves, wood heating remains relevant for heating summer cottages and small houses. The efficiency of its operation and fuel consumption depend on the correct organization of the system. But besides this, it is important to know how to heat your stove or boiler with wood so that the house is warm.

What determines the heat transfer of a wood stove

The heat transfer of the heating system depends on several factors: the design of the stove and its condition, the quality of the firewood and the degree of thermal insulation of the house. These parameters are calculated even before the organization of heat supply. But often they need to be optimized for the existing system.

  • to minimize heat losses at home: insulate the outer walls and roof, install new windows with a low heat transfer rate;
  • carry out preventive maintenance of the stove: make sure that the firebox and ash pan are intact, install a heat-insulating layer on the side of the outer wall;
  • prepare firewood: choose the right type of wood, form logs of the optimal size, dry them.

These actions must be done even before the start of the heating season. This way you can avoid additional heating costs and maintain a normal temperature level in the house with minimal effort. But the most crucial moment is the preparation and proper use of fuel.

Stoker's Secrets: How to Use Firewood Economically and Efficiently

The first step is to choose the optimal wood. Best suited for wood heating are "hard" varieties - oak, walnut or birch. These logs have maximum heat dissipation. But the choice is not always possible and often they use available species - deciduous or pine. The latter contains a large amount of resins, which, in the process of burning out, will form a layer of soot inside the chimney.

To prepare for the winter season, you need to do the following:

  • prepare firewood - chop into logs and dry them;
  • organize a place for their storage - a canopy or a separate room;
  • make a place for drying near the stove - the next batch of firewood should contain a minimum of moisture.

These stages need to be considered in more detail.

Preparing logs

When preparing firewood, the optimal size of the logs should be calculated in advance. They depend on the dimensions of the firebox. The length of the logs should be 3-4 cm less than the same indicator of the combustion chamber. The diameter of the firewood is usually 9-11 cm. If it is larger, the core will not burn out. To solve this problem, you will need to constantly knock ash from logs.

During procurement, you need to pay attention to the following nuances:

  • the absence of foreign objects in the wood - nails, metal staples;
  • knots have a higher density and burn worse;
  • wood shavings are not recommended for use as fuel.

The important point is the correct storage of the logs. Air gaps should form between them to remove moisture. The woodpile is protected from precipitation by a canopy. Its dimensions should be 20-30 cm larger than the dimensions of the folded firewood.

Oven maintenance

The next step is to optimize the parameters of the heating system. In order for the house to be warm when heating with wood, preventive work should be performed. The integrity of the structure is checked, if necessary, the old masonry is dismantled and a new one is installed. The calculated capacity of the structure must correspond to the actual need.

Types of preventive maintenance with a wood-burning stove:

  • cleaning the ash pan, combustion chamber and chimney from soot;
  • checking the gaps of the grates, if necessary, they are replaced;
  • the doors must close tightly;
  • if moisture forms on the inside of the chimney in winter, it is insulated.

The last factor is very important. Condensation flows into the combustion chamber and reduces the efficiency of the wood-burning stove. It also provokes the rapid formation of a layer of soot in the chimney and a decrease in its working diameter, which will affect the draft indicator.

Laying and maintaining the flame

The firewood should be stored loosely in the combustion chamber. There should be air gaps between the logs. In height, the firewood should not occupy the entire volume of the firebox. Air draft is the circulating flow between the ash pan and the chimney. Therefore, there should be a space between the firewood and the grate. To do this, it is recommended to put one log across the entire masonry at the bottom of the firebox.

  • Traction adjustment. The maximum air flow should be only at the moment of kindling. When the flame is stable, reduce the draft by closing the ash pan door.
  • The combustion chamber door must be closed at all times.
  • After the top layer of firewood has burned out, it is recommended to knock off the carbon deposits so that the rest of the wood burns out.
  • Periodic cleaning of the ash pan.

Guided by these simple rules, you will be able to heat the stove with wood correctly, and the house will always be warm and cozy. It is important that the heat transfer is not more than required. Otherwise, fuel consumption will increase and, as a result, heating costs.

Friends, every day we analyze who and for what search queries gets to our site. And we noticed that the word do-it-yourself eternal log got a lot of requests. Accordingly, readers wanted to find this information on our website. Maybe this is due to the fact that we have articles that describe products made from logs, stumps, cuts and think that this also applies to us.

We decided to study and describe in this article what kind of wonderful log that will help save on heating and how to do it yourself, especially since there are many negative and positive reviews on the Internet.

The device of the eternal log is shown in the diagram below.

This is not a log, but an ordinary metal pipe welded on both sides. A hole has been made in the pipe, which can be closed with a valve. Water is poured through this hole and fills the entire volume of the pipe. Several small holes were made along the entire length of the pipe. Accordingly, so that water does not pour out through these holes, legs are made.

According to the inventor in the video, this eternal log is an endless source of savings on heating and will work for a long time.

It also says that the stove will work more efficiently.

How does it all work? Water is poured into the pipe, preferably hot, so that the heating is faster, but cold is also possible. A funnel can be inserted into the hole so that the water flows precisely into the hole. The whole effect of the formation of saturated steam begins faster from hot water.

Physics

  1. The burning time of firewood increases significantly, for example, without an eternal log, burning lasts an average of 1 hour 10 minutes, and with it - 1 hour 40 minutes, that is, 40% longer. It turns out that less firewood is required to heat a house or room.
  2. The heat capacity of steam is twice as high as the heat capacity of the ambient air. This is indicated in the reference book "Specific heat capacities of solids, liquids and gases". Specific heat at constant pressure for air is 1 KJ / kg * K, and for water vapor 2.14 KJ / kg * K at 100 ° C.

After filling in the water, close the hole with a plug and place the eternal log at the very bottom of the stove. On the left, on the right and on top, ordinary logs are put, a kindling is put in and all this is set on fire.

After a while, the water boils and steam forms. Then air and steam are mixed inside the stove and a mixture is formed, the heat capacity of which is almost twice that of ordinary air.

In the end, is this a myth or a reality?

What can we say about this? All this, of course, is not true, the laws of physics have not been canceled, and the law of conservation of energy still exists. Accordingly, in order to receive additional energy in one place, it is necessary to spend this energy in another. It is also always necessary to ensure that the holes are always open, otherwise a water hammer may occur and turn the entire firebox.

There is only one advice - a well-folded stove will save fuel and keep heat for a long time. But to do this, you need an experienced village stove-maker who can determine the volume of the house and build a stove of the required size.
