St. George Ribbon. Story

Russian empire

In the 1730s, black (enamel of the eagle), yellow (enamel of the gold field of the state emblem), later orange, and white (the silver figure of St.

The St. George Ribbon was established during the establishment of the Order of St. George by Catherine II on November 26, 1769 during the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774 to encourage loyalty, courage and prudence for the good of the Russian Empire, manifested in courageous deeds or wise advice. The name of the tape received on behalf of George the Victorious. The ribbon was supplemented with the motto: "For service and courage", as well as a white equilateral cross or a four-pointed gold star. The ribbon was worn depending on the class of the gentleman: either in the buttonhole, or around the neck, or over the right shoulder. The tape was supposed to be a lifetime salary. After the death of the owner, it was inherited, but due to the commission of a shameful offense, it could be withdrawn from the owner. The order's statute of 1769 contained the following description of the ribbon:

"Silk ribbon about three black and two yellow lanes".

However, as the images show, in practice, not so much yellow as orange was initially used in practice (from a heraldic point of view, both orange and yellow are just options for displaying gold). The 1913 statute read:

"Tape about three blacks and two orange stripes worn over the right shoulder.

The traditional interpretation of the colors of the St. George ribbon states that black means smoke, orange means flame. The Chief Chamberlain Count Litta wrote in 1833: “The immortal legislator who established this order believed that his ribbon connects the color of gunpowder and the color of fire.” However, a prominent specialist in Russian faleristics, Serge Andolenko, points out that black and yellow colors, in fact, only reproduce the colors of the state emblem: a black double-headed eagle on a gold background. The image of George both on the state emblem and on the cross (award) itself had the same colors: on a white horse, white George in a yellow cloak killing a black snake with a spear, respectively, a white cross with a yellow-black ribbon.

A large golden cross with white enamel on both sides with a gold border, in the middle of which is depicted the coat of arms of the Moscow Kingdom on enamel, that is, in a red field, St. George, silver armed with armor, golden in addition to these, a hanging cape, having on its head golden a diadem on a horse silver, on which the saddle and all the harness golden, black the snake is poured out in the sole golden striking with a spear, on the back side in the middle in a white field is the monogram of this St. George's name.

- Statute of the Military Order of St. George 1769

In some cases, the St. George Ribbon was used as an analogue of the corresponding award - the Order of St. George, the Insignia of the Military Order and the St. George Cross. In those cases when the holders of the Badge of the Military Order could not receive the Badge itself (for example, during the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855), they wore the St. George ribbon on their uniform. During the First World War, the Knights of St. George also wore the St. George ribbon in winter over the side of the overcoat.

In addition, for the only time, the St. George Ribbon acquired the status of an independent award. This happened in 1914, when Lieutenant-General A.S. Lukomsky was awarded the St. George Ribbon to the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree he already had for mobilization (the Order of St. George for mobilization could not be given by status ). Thus, he became the owner of a unique award - the Order of St. Vladimir on the St. George's Ribbon. The award was jokingly called "Vladimir Georgievich".

white movement

Award of the Volunteer Army "Insignia of the First Kuban Campaign" ("For the Ice Campaign") on the St. George Ribbon

After the Bolsheviks abolished the old award system, the St. George ribbon continued to be used in the award systems of the White armies. In particular, it was used on the honorary award of the Volunteer Army - the sign "For the Ice Campaign" and the award of the Eastern Front, the sign "For the Great Siberian Campaign". St. George's colors (St. George's bows, chevrons, ribbons on headdresses and banners) were used in various white formations, especially by participants in the Yaroslavl uprising. Ataman Annenkov at the end of 1918 gave "the right to wear the St. George ribbon" to veterans of his detachment "to distinguish them from newcomers." During the Second World War, two fighters of the Russian Corps, who acted against the Yugoslav partisans, were awarded the St. George Cross.

The ribbon of the Order of St. George was used in the symbols of Russian emigrant organizations, such as the Russian All-Military Union. The symbol of the collaborationist “Union of Struggle Against Bolshevism” created in 1944 in Bobruisk was the “George banner with the St. George cross embroidered in silver in the middle”, the leaders of the organization wore bandages of St. George colors on their sleeves.

USSR

Since the autumn of 1941, units, formations and ships, for the courage and heroism of their personnel, which they showed in the defense of the Fatherland, were awarded the honorary title "Guards", "Guards". By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 21, 1942, the badge "Guard" was established for the guards. Despite the fact that the “Guard” badge was established as a single one, the Soviet Navy decided to establish its own guards badge (the popular name is “Naval Guard”). Thus, the head of the organizational and combatant department of the Naval Forces of the Navy, captain of the 2nd rank B. M. Khomich, suggested using a rectangular (used in the Russian army and navy) plate covered with a black and orange ribbon, and also using the latter on sailors' caps. The People's Commissar of the Navy, Admiral N. G. Kuznetsov, by his order No. 142 of June 10, 1942, approved these insignia. On May 5, 1943, he also approved the publication of the "Illustrated description of the insignia of the personnel of the Navy of the USSR", which depicts the Guards Ribbon.

Also, a silk moire ribbon with five longitudinal stripes of equal width - three black and two orange, with edges bordered by narrow orange stripes - was attached to various Soviet awards: to the most massive medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 .", to the Order of Glory of all degrees.

"Now we have 5,000 ribbons for Moscow volunteers who will create distribution points, there will be ten places in Moscow. Most likely, by the start date, the number of ribbons will be even more"- said the press service.

It is noted that in 2016 about 20 million ribbons were distributed in Russia.

George Ribbon” - All-Russian action dedicated to the celebration of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War. It has been held every year since 2005. The ribbon handed out by volunteers, in appearance and color combination, corresponds to the ribbon with which the order block for the medal is covered "For the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945".

According to the organizers of the action, its main goal is to remind new generations that "who and at what cost won the most terrible war of the last century". The action takes place under the slogan: "Grandfather's Victory is My Victory", "Tie. If you remember!", "I remember! I'm proud!", "We are the heirs of the Great Victory!", "Thank the granfather for the victory!".

Today, the St. George Ribbon campaign has started all over the country. Traditionally, every year it is held on the eve of Victory Day. The action has already been picked up in dozens of other states. On the streets of many cities, volunteers distribute black and orange ribbons in memory of those who defended the world from fascism.

For the first time, they appeared on the streets of cities on the eve of May 9 12 years ago. And again spring, and again St. George ribbons as a symbol of Victory and a sign of gratitude to those who fought for it.

“A symbol of the Great Victory, that time has not passed in vain. I am a child of the war years, and I know what it is,” said Lyubov Kondrashova.

In Moscow, St. George ribbons are handed out in the busiest places. On Pushkin Square, the strategic reserve is melting before our eyes.

Since the 17th century, such a ribbon has been part of the highest army award - the Order of St. George. During the Great Patriotic War she decorated the Order of Glory.

Not only a symbol of military prowess, but also, perhaps, the easiest way to say “thank you” to veterans. To get the St. George ribbon, many drivers slowed down today, emerging from the dense flow of Moscow traffic.

On the Arbat and on the Sparrow Hills, people themselves come up for St. George ribbons. They take several at once - for themselves, for relatives.

“Great memory. True, I did not fight, but I experienced the consequences of the war, ”says a passerby.

“I was a child. I ran endlessly to the front and were returned home three or four times with the police,” the man recalls.

Not only all Russian regions, but also residents of 70 states take part in the action. The code of memory, which is understandable to many without words. Here, for example, footage from London.

“The victory over fascism gave us the opportunity to live in peace, in comfort. I consider it my duty to remind people of recent history, to talk to those who have forgotten,” volunteer Zoe Copland said.

“Many do not know about the enormous sacrifices made by the Soviet Union and other countries. And this is important to remember,” says a resident of London.

The organizers of the action are sure that putting on the St. George ribbon on the eve of May 9, as a sign of respect for the front-line soldiers, for their feat, has already become a very important tradition for the younger generations.

“A feature of this year's action will be that volunteers, before giving the St. George ribbon, will ask a number of questions related to the history of the St. George ribbon. If a person cannot answer these questions, then we will give a leaflet, which, on the one hand, describes a brief history of the appearance of the St. George ribbon, and on the other hand, a reminder of how to wear it correctly,” said Olga Amelchenkova, head of the Victory Volunteers movement. .

Many admit that they feel something special at this moment, something very personal.

“Memory, joy, pride, because not a grandfather, not a great-grandfather, my father fought. He married late, after the war, and from 1941 to 1947 he served in Kronstadt as a rescue sailor. He has a medal "For the Defense of Leningrad",” the woman says.

Volunteers are in a hurry - there are two weeks left until May 9, but the feeling of a holiday is already appearing now.

The St. George ribbon has become a symbol of the connection between generations and memory. I would like it to also become a "vaccination" against the repetition of wars, - said Dmitry Kiselev, General Director of the Rossiya Segodnya MIA, and officially launched the St. George Ribbon-2017 campaign, which can be received in 90 countries from April 24

The deputy head of Rossotrudnichestvo, Alexander Radkov, said that the action had just begun, and there were already not enough ribbons in almost all countries from Nicaragua to Indonesia.

Not only our compatriots join the action, but also local residents, for whom the St. George ribbon has become a symbol of the fight against fascism and manifestations of extremism, - he explains the popularity of our symbol of Victory.

The biggest demand for ribbons is in the CIS countries. In Europe, the largest action will take place in Serbia, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Greece. Also, Vietnam, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Israel, and India showed great interest in the action.

This year, for the first time, the St. George Ribbon action will be held in the representative offices of Rossotrudnichestvo in Afghanistan, Macedonia and Montenegro, Radkov added.

According to Oleg Malginov, Director of the Department for Work with Compatriots Abroad of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the value of this action is that it is initiated by the compatriots themselves.

In Germany, for example, the St. George Ribbon and Immortal Regiment campaigns are carried out by compatriots, he says. - Basically, these are young guys who, perhaps, have never been to Russia. But it is important for them to pin the St. George ribbon, to march in formation in the Immortal Regiment, because in this way they preserve the memory of historical roots.

St. George's ribbon has become not only a symbol of the connection between generations, but also a "vaccination" against the repetition of wars

Oleg Malginov assured that, despite the difficult political situation, the actions dedicated to the Victory Day will be held in Ukraine and the Baltic states.

The situation of last year shows that there seems to be no official ban,” he says. - But everything is ambiguous, and it is not entirely safe to stimulate some processes. But I'm sure people will still wear St. George's ribbons.

Although in some countries, according to the diplomat, such people are "taken into account." Not everyone likes that the St. George ribbon is a symbol of historical truth and the victory of the Soviet people.

The current trend in a number of countries is to belittle the significance of victory, to belittle the role of the Red Army, explains Malginov. - You know that more than half of young people in European countries believe that the Americans won, and the Soviet Union was responsible only for unleashing World War II.

More than 50,000 volunteers will distribute St. George ribbons in Russia this year. But before handing over the ribbon, they will ask you to answer a few simple questions.

If a person cannot answer these questions, then we will give a leaflet, which, on the one hand, describes the history of the appearance of the St. George ribbon, and on the other hand, a reminder of how to wear it correctly. After that, the person will receive his St. George ribbon, - explained the head of the Victory Volunteers movement, Olga Amelchenkova.
