We figure out how to lay the carpet correctly: stages of work, recommendations, video. How to lay the carpet correctly

This product is considered one of the best options for arranging flooring. In addition to giving the room an atmosphere of coziness, this material well dampens sounds, insulates the floor, and caring for it is not difficult. But in order for such a "finishing" surface finish to serve for a long time, it is necessary to know the technology of its installation and to complete all measures in full - the carpet "does not like" laying according to the "simplified scheme".

Before moving on to the question of how to lay carpet, some features of such a covering should be noted.

  • This material has 2 types of base - rubberized or cloth. In the latter case, the carpet should not be installed in rooms with excessive humidity, as well as where water leaks are possible. But if the decision is made, then it is necessary to carry out a number of additional "protective" measures.
  • All samples differ in the length of the villi. When choosing a material for a particular room, this factor should be taken into account. For example, in rooms with increased "traffic" (for example, a corridor), it is advisable to lay short-haired material, but for a bedroom, a carpet with a long pile is more acceptable.
  • This coating absorbs dust intensively. If any of the family members have allergic reactions, then cleaning the room (with a vacuum cleaner) will have to be done daily.
  • Carpet can be laid on a base made of any material. The only condition is that it should be aligned as much as possible. This coating is quite soft, so any pothole or bulge on the surface will not create the most pleasant sensation.
  • Carpet is elastic, therefore, during storage and transportation, folds can form on it, especially if a long roll is bent in half. It is advisable to lay it out on the floor before installation and let it "lie down" (it is possible to moisten it a little with water in places of folds). After a while, he will completely restore his shape.
  • When covering a concrete base (or cement screed), a carpet underlay must be provided. This will prevent it from absorbing dust particles that may form on such a surface.

Floor finishing with this material can be carried out in almost any room, on any base. Considering the methodology for carrying out the work, we list the entire range of necessary measures. What needs to be done in a particular room (depending on its specifics), what can be neglected, and what has already been done earlier - each owner will determine independently. It makes no sense to explain that all floors are different (for example, wooden, concrete, already finished with linoleum), so there can be no single recommendation in principle. So, it is assumed that the work starts from scratch.

Carpet laying technology

Preparation of the base

A big mistake is made by those who believe that at this stage you only need to clean the floor and, if necessary, level it. After all, any base is subject to various influences, and this is not only moisture or temperature fluctuations. Therefore, it needs an appropriate surface treatment, which will extend its life. Moreover, such activities must be carried out when working with carpet, and when using other materials.

Nowadays, plastic products are increasingly used. This is the best option for carpet skirting boards. But if it is traditional (wooden) and requires updating, then it must be painted before installing it in place. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove the paint that has got on the canvas (given its "hairiness"), especially if the material is synthetic. In this case, the use of a solvent is excluded.

Cleaning

It is not only about removing debris, removing nails or screws. The base must be thoroughly washed. This will allow, upon inspection, to detect all defects (cracks in the screed, dry, rotten boards, mold, fungus). Elimination of such defects will not only allow you to forget about repairing the floor for a long time, but in most cases also significantly reduce heat loss in the room and the level of humidity.

Treatment

Depending on the base material and the specifics of the room, various preparations are used - antiseptics, water-repellent impregnations. For wood, additionally - fire retardants. If a screed is subsequently made, then the processing is carried out after its installation.

Alignment

The technique is different. A screed is laid on a concrete base (if necessary) or a self-leveling floor is equipped (a more expensive event) using self-leveling mixtures. For plank floors - installation of sheets (plates) of plywood, MDF and the like ("dry" screed).

Padding

It is produced if the material will be fixed by gluing or using adhesive tape.

If the laying of the material is carried out on a reinforced concrete slab or screed, then it must be done. Corresponding products are on sale, and their assortment is quite impressive.

"Fitting" the material

As a rule, it is rarely possible to cover the entire floor with one sheet. Therefore, at least 2 parts, but you have to dock. The lines for the cut are marked on the back of the material (a pointed piece of soap, chalk). For a smooth and high-quality cut, it is recommended to use a "shoemaker's knife" or large tailor's scissors.

Using small household appliances can cause the edges to "shaggy". And the work will take a long time.

There are various techniques for attaching it to the base. The most suitable one is chosen depending on the dimensions of the room and its architectural features (the presence of ledges, columns, niches, etc.).

Free styling

It is advisable to use only for small rooms, and even then, if the entire floor can be covered with one sheet, without joining separate parts. The point is that the roll is rolled out over the entire area and leveled (smoothed) so that its edges are slightly wrapped on the walls.

Fixing is done with skirting boards. But if they are plastic, then you need to "fasten" the material around the perimeter with small nails with large caps or adhesive tape. The skirting board should not be lowered under the carpet, as debris will accumulate at the junction (in the cracks).

The point is that something like a crate for carpet is being constructed from this tape. Moreover, only double-sided tape is used. It is glued along the installation line of the skirting boards, in doorways. This is the outer contour. If the room has columns, ledges, niches, they are also covered with adhesive tape.

But further - at the discretion of the owner. The point is to securely attach the carpet to the floor throughout the room, to prevent it from shifting and the formation of folds, air bubbles. You can build a grid with cells of the required size from adhesive tape over the entire surface. Another option is to stick it in parallel stripes from one corner to another (diagonally).

When such a "structure" is prepared, the web is laid. The upper (protective) film is gradually removed from the tape, and the carpet is firmly pressed to the base. After the web is completely rolled, it must be rolled well. Anything will do - a rubber roller, even a regular rolling pin. The main thing is to achieve reliable fixation.

Gluing

This method is more suitable for administrative and other public buildings. It is rarely used in residential premises. If, nevertheless, it is decided to do the laying according to this method, then it is necessary to take into account the compatibility of the carpet glue with the material on which it is laid. Some compounds can react, for example, with laminate, linoleum.

The fixation of the web is reliable. But the question is how to then dismantle the coating, fixed in this way, and without significantly damaging the base?

This method can be used if some part of the room is being finished (moreover, in the corner, in the places where furniture is installed) from the remaining small pieces. But all the same - this is an extreme case.

Stretching

This method is glueless. The technique is simple, but requires laying the substrate in order to even out the height difference between the canvas and the slats.

They are attached to the floor along the perimeter, and small nails are preliminarily driven into everything from the back side (through and through, with an inclination). The result is an outer frame with "needles" sticking out upward, onto which the canvas is stretched.

With this method of fixing the carpet, if necessary, it is easy to replace, and the base does not need to be carefully leveled. But here you need an accurate calculation and some experience.

Docking parts

This issue should be considered separately, since it is rarely when it is possible to evenly cover the entire floor with one canvas.

First option

If the material is without long pile, then decorative strips can be used. They are commercially available in a large assortment - both in size (width, length) and in color. Such products are laid on the seam and attached to the base with self-tapping screws.

Second option

The canvases are stacked on top of each other, with a slight overlap. A through cut is made in the middle. After that, the edges are slightly raised, and carpet glue is spread under them. It remains only to press them firmly and fix them in this position with some kind of "weight" (until the adhesive dries).

When connecting individual pieces, you should pay attention to the direction of the villi on different parts of the material coincide.

  1. How to lay the carpet, everyone decides for himself. But which one? It should be noted that the material is divided into several classes. "21st" is more prone to abrasion than others. It is advisable to lay it where intensive movement of people is not expected.
  2. Do not throw out the pieces of material left after finishing the floor. The carpet has good maintainability. If a patch is carefully placed on the damaged area, it will be invisible.
  3. Recommended techniques for laying canvases, depending on the size of the room:
  • up to 25 m2 - any;
  • up to 100 m2 - everything except free;
  • more than 100 m2 - gluing only.

Free price calculation

Carpet is a soft roll material with long or short pile intended for flooring. The advantages include the following qualities: warm, you can walk on it without shoes, it is easy to choose an option for any interior, you need a minimum of consumables. But there are also disadvantages: not suitable for a large area; not recommended for high-traffic areas. It is best used in children's and bedrooms. The technologies for laying carpet are quite diverse and are selected taking into account the characteristics of the room and its area, includes the preparation of the base for the carpet and several methods for performing work related to the specifics of the use of the coating in the future. The prices for carpet laying depend on the applied methods of laying.

Conditions for correct installation

Prepared carpet

Laying begins with a careful measurement of the room and the calculation of the required material. To this end, you should draw a plan of the room with all the architectural elements and provide for a margin of up to 100 mm on each side. The purchased carpet is brought for acclimatization to the room where the work will be carried out, at least 24 hours in advance. He should lie down in a straightened state. The price of carpet installation depends on the preferred installation method.

Main floor device

If the work will be carried out on a concrete floor, it must be leveled, if necessary, sanded or poured with special leveling mixtures. It is imperative to prime, otherwise dust will subsequently come from under the coating. At the last stage, cover with a substrate if necessary; preparation of a wooden base is possible in two ways. First, cover the subfloor with chipboard sheets, putty the cracks and treat with a primer. Secondly, remove all parts that protrude above the level of the base. Carry out sanding, priming, if necessary, fill with a mixture to level the surface and cover with a substrate.

Laying methods

The choice of carpet laying method depends on:

  • the type of material itself and the quality of its basis;
  • the level of the passage of the room;
  • functions performed by the premises;
  • quality of the subfloor.

Loose styling with perimeter fixation

Laying the carpet with fixation along the perimeter is the simplest method in which the entire coating is freely positioned on the surface, aligned with a roller in the direction from the center along the base. V-shaped cuts are made near the corners and fastened with a plinth. In the doorway, they are fixed with a metal rail.

    Advantages:

    • minimum time and money;
    • there is no need to purchase special equipment.

    Flaws:

    • furniture cannot be rolled or moved on such a coating;
    • assumes exclusively dry cleaning of the coating ..

Fixation on double-sided tape

Carpet laying on scotch tape is carried out in several stages. First, the double-sided tape must be glued around the perimeter of the base, and then placed over the entire floor in the form of a grid with a side of a square of 500 mm. In this case, we do not remove the upper film. Next, spread the material and, gradually removing the protective layer from the tape, glue the carpet over the entire surface. Finish the work by installing the skirting board. Most customers prefer to lay the carpet in this way. Adhesive tape under the flooring can be of different types: 63 or 150 mm wide. You should choose the type of tape after you decide what kind of carpet you want to install.

Advantages:

  • easy to implement;
  • savings due to the fact that there is no need for a substrate;
  • there is a possibility of a simple change of the coating if necessary.

Flaws:

  • it is necessary to especially carefully prepare the subfloor in order to exclude the emission of dust, as a result of which the scotch tape will not be fixed;
  • it is imperative to maintain a constant room temperature due to the performance of the adhesive tape;
  • there is a risk of unevenness due to deformation of the adhesive tape.

Gluing

Laying carpet on glue is used in rooms where high traffic is expected. This method is laborious, however, it is absolutely reliable. To complete the work, the canvas is folded with the front side inward, glue is applied to the free floor, the carpet is laid on the prepared surface, pressing it to the base. Repeat the procedure with the second half. Finish with the installation of a plinth. In addition to simple gluing, carpet is laid on glue with a backing. The difference between the simple technology is that the substrate is first glued, and the floor covering is glued on top of it.

Advantages:

  • great for large areas;
  • easy to use;
  • guarantees durability;
  • provides the ability to clean with a washing vacuum cleaner.

Flaws:

  • it is impossible to reuse the coating;
  • after dismantling, it will be necessary to carefully prepare the surface of the base for the next coating.

Stretching (laying without glue on a gripper rail)

Laying the carpet on a gripper rail is a method based on the elasticity of the carpet. Special slats are attached around the entire perimeter of the room. The substrate is unfolded, which is attached to the base with a stapler. The spread carpet is stretched in all directions onto slats. To do this, use a special tool called a stretcher. Finish the work by installing the plinth.

Carpet laying is not the most difficult thing, you do not need to have certain skills, but you should not neglect the styling features.

Carpet is a floor covering that can be found at home, in offices, kindergartens, etc.

It creates coziness, has heat and sound insulation properties.

Still, how to lay the carpet?

To perform work, you must adhere to the following conditions:

  • The floor must be level and clean, the finishing in the room is complete;
  • Carpet is laid at a temperature not lower than +16 degrees, air humidity should not exceed 70%;
  • If the carpet will be laid in cold weather, then you need to keep it indoors at room temperature for a day;
  • It is better to start laying from the center of the room. If there is a need to match the pattern, then it is better to take the carpet with a margin of 15-20 cm.

Carpet laying is done using the following tools:

  • carpet knives - necessary for cutting carpet into strips;
  • metal ruler - needed as a guide when cutting;
  • notched trowel - needed to apply glue, or remove the old one;
  • scrapers - with their help, remove the remaining glue or solution;
  • a wooden block or a grip rail - fastened along the perimeter of the base, and at an angle;
  • substrate - needed to create a soft surface;
  • kicker - you will need it to stretch the carpet.

Do-it-yourself carpet laying is done in three ways:

  1. free styling;
  2. style of glue;
  3. stretching technology is used.

It is used, as a rule, in small premises. It is carried out using double-sided tape or fixed around the perimeter.

The first option is most often used in cases when an interior change is planned in the near future. Scotch tape is glued around the entire perimeter.

The floor must be clean, even; it can be laid on linoleum, parquet, marble. Next, a grid of adhesive tape is made on it (cells 50x50 cm).

A carpet prepared in advance for the size of the room (with a 5-6 cm approach to each wall) is laid on the grid.

You can do this work yourself, thereby eliminating additional expenses. Do-it-yourself carpet laying in this way does not take much time.

However, if the humidity level rises, the tape may deform and the coating may wrinkle.

Fixation along the perimeter is as follows: one layer of carpet is laid on the prepared floor, the edges should go to the wall, about 10 cm.

From the center to the edges, a special roller is passed along our coating, after which the excess is cut off.

The carpet is fixed against the walls with plinths, in the doorways it is fastened with metal slats.

A significant disadvantage of this installation method is its low strength.

Glue method

Provides reliable fastening of the coating, excludes the possibility of bubbling, the formation of wrinkles, you can clean it with a washing vacuum cleaner. Suitable for large spaces.

At the same time, this technology is very laborious, the floor is prepared with great care, it will not be possible to use the carpet a second time.

The cost of installing carpet with glue is higher than with the free-laying method. What are the features of this method?

Bonding can be either partial or continuous. When using several strips of carpet, a continuous gluing method is used.

Prepare a notched trowel from the tools to apply the glue. How to put the carpet on the glue can be seen in the video.

First, the carpet is spread with a run on the walls of 5-10 cm, the excess is cut off, and the covering is folded in half. On one side, the floor is coated with glue, onto which the coating itself is pulled, pressing tightly.

The other side is fixed in a similar way. After the end of the work, the carpet is stretched again, leveled, cut off excess material and installed the baseboards.

It is best to use this method of installing carpet on a wooden or concrete floor so that the adhesive cannot react with artificial surfaces such as laminate or linoleum.

Stretching method

A wooden block, a grip rail is used. The slats are fixed along the perimeter of the walls, nails are located on the walls at an angle of 45 degrees.

The slats must match the carpet brand and vice versa. First, a "gripper" carpet is selected, and already under it - slats.

The points of the latter are on the same axis, but in different directions. The upper ones should rest against the wall, the lower ones - from it.

The top studs hold the carpet, while the bottom studs cling to the floor and prevent the carpet from slipping. At the very end of laying the carpet to the wall, wide skirting boards are installed that can close the resulting irregularities in the fastening.

A backing is laid under the carpet to provide softness and additional noise and heat insulation. The service life of the carpet laid in this way is high.

The floor does not need special preparation, concrete will not work in this case: the carnations should cut well into the surface, such as linoleum or wood flooring.

Tiled (modular) carpet

Tiled carpet differs from the usual one in that it is cut into tiles measuring 50x50 cm and has a more rigid base.

The multi-layer construction provides good strength and wear resistance. Another feature is that it can be laid on a "warm floor".

The pile is only made of synthetics, which, in addition, is treated with dirt-repellent and antistatic impregnations. Pile is able to quickly recover its shape after exercise.

Tiled carpet has equal edges, which when laid tightly adhere to each other. This type of coating offers the implementation of various color ideas and design combinations.

In most offices there is a problem of protruding wires, in order to hide them, they use raised floors and resort to floor coverings.

Tiled carpet in this case is simply necessary. If necessary, you do not have to remove the entire coating - only part of it (tiles).

Installation of modular carpet is carried out with glue or free laying. The floor must also be clean and dry, level.

It is more convenient to glue tiles in small pieces than to glue a roll covering. In the case of careless laying of one module, you will not have to redo everything. You can watch the installation of tiled carpet in the video.

Tiled carpet is more expensive than rolled carpet, but it will still be possible to save money due to the fact that practically no surplus is formed.

Features of laying carpet

On a concrete floor, carpet made from artificial materials, such as olefin, will be used correctly, and a lint-free carpet will also be appropriate.

Concrete has the ability to absorb moisture, the carpet, in turn, must resist this so that mold does not form during operation.

For this reason, you should not use jute-based carpet.

At the very beginning of work, the concrete must be cleaned, defects removed and cracks repaired.

Carpets are made of natural and synthetic fibers. Wool covers are environmentally friendly, but unfortunately impractical and expensive.

They wear out quickly, are "afraid" of moths, and accumulate a statistical charge.

Laying carpet on stairs

To do this correctly, it is necessary at the stage of material selection to pay attention to the marking - "for stairs".

The basis of such a carpet must be strong, if it is planned to be laid without gluing, then you need to choose a coating on a rubber basis. The fixation must be careful to avoid injury.

Based on each step, the stock of carpet should reach 4 cm. Spiral staircases are measured along the outer perimeter, and the width of the carpet itself is equal to the width of the largest step.

You can lay the carpet on the stairs in the form of a path, stepping back along the edges of the stairs. All this is fastened with special rods at the corners of the stairs, fixed with special rings.

In this case, the carpet can be moved and even removed for cleaning.

Laying can take place in continuous steps. The technology is as follows: for each step, a separate cutting of the material is made.

Working with templates is simplified. Docking takes place smoothly with glue.

How to lay the carpet on the stairs can be seen in the video.

The main value of every home is comfort, and many things contribute to its creation.

Important among them is a beautiful and warm floor.

If the carpet is an unaffordable luxury for you, then it will be worthily replaced by the carpet.

It is cheaper, but a little more moody when styling.

First of all, it should be remembered that you can lay the carpet only after all the rough repair work has been completed... Otherwise, the surface can get dirty and lose its appearance.

However, this nuance will only please with its end result and you can safely enjoy the beautiful and comfortable floor.

Preparing the base of the floor

Carpet feels comfortable not only on concrete, but also on laminate, as well as on parquet and linoleum.

Strict requirements are imposed on the base of the floor: a perfectly flat surface and cleanliness (there should not even be dust).

Besides, the moisture content of the base itself, and the room should not exceed 75%... In addition, it is necessary to carry out several preparatory steps:

  • in concrete, seal all cracks and potholes with cement and a primer;
  • wash linoleum well, clean it from dirt, degrease, let it dry and remove folds, if any;
  • clean the wooden base from debris, wash and also dry.

What to lay the carpet on?

The use of a backing (intermediate material between the base and the carpet) has several advantages:

  • makes the coating softer;
  • contributes to sound insulation;
  • increases the service life of the coating by about one and a half times.

Carpet is usually laid on a backing, which is usually made of felt, polyethylene foam or polyurethane foam, but must be resilient.

When buying, be sure to check this - bend it in half. If the material folds easily, don't buy it.

Laying methods

Carpet laying methods depend on the room in which the covering will lie.... If it is a balcony, a loggia, a pantry, a small children's room, then free laying with fastening under the plinth will be enough.

If the room is more spacious (hall, living room), then it is better to use the stretching method or gluing with double-sided tape.

In offices, hotels, cafes, canteens and other places with high traffic, only glue installation will give an acceptable result.

Remember that carpet is bought not by the size of the room, but with an allowance of about 5 cm on each side. Moreover, it is better to do with a single piece of material.

Free styling

  1. We unfold the carpet around the entire perimeter of the room and lay it with the factory edge close to one of the walls. In all other directions, the coating should creep slightly onto the walls.
  2. We straighten the "waves" and "wrinkles" with a heavy rubber roller from the center to the walls. After that, we firmly press the edges of the carpet with our hand to the junction of the wall and floor.
  3. Carefully cut off strips of excess material along the fold line with a knife and fix the carpet with plinths.

Bonding with tape

Can be glued directly to the base, or can be glued to the substrate.

  1. First, double-sided tape is attached around the perimeter of the base.
  2. Then a mesh is made with a step of 50 cm. We glue it on one side, and do not touch the other for now.
  3. On top of the scotch tape we put the pre-cut parts of the carpet. We do this carefully, carefully fitting to the walls.
  4. When all proportions are met, remove the protective layer from the tape and glue the coating to it.
  5. Carefully smooth each part with a roller. If a substrate is used, then we repeat the indicated actions with the tape twice.

Stretching method

This is the most difficult way to install carpet.... For stretching, you will need special slats, on which there are 2 rows of nails driven in at an angle of 45 degrees, as well as a special tool - a stretcher (kicker).

It allows you to stretch the material a little, but you need to do this carefully, as if the stretcher is used incorrectly, the coating can be damaged.

The sequence of actions when laying carpet using the stretching method is as follows:

  1. Along the perimeter of the room, grippers (slats) are fixed so that the nails look into the wall.
  2. A subfloor is laid on the floor, carefully adjusted to fit the grippers. It is better to secure it with a stapler.
  3. A carpet is placed on top. It is trimmed to fit the walls and with the help of a stretcher the edges of the carpet are stretched, and then tightly fixed with the help of grippers.

Bonding with glue

This is the laying of the carpet "tightly". It is also available in two versions - with and without backing.

First you need to unfold the carpet, carefully straighten it, cut off the excess. The following steps depend on which room you want to put the carpet in:

  1. Long corridor... We bend the coating and glue it in the middle. This is done so that the center is well fixed and does not fidget during further work. Then we apply glue to the remaining parts of the base and press down.
    In this case, the amount of glue must be strictly metered (depending on the quality and thickness of the material). It must be applied in a circular motion with a spatula with notches, otherwise there will be no uniform distribution.

    At the end, you should walk over the entire coverage area with a heavy rubber roller so that air comes out, otherwise the formation of bubbles, as well as bumps on the surface, cannot be avoided.

  2. Wide room... In this case, bend one half, apply glue and carefully glue it. We do the same with the other half.

If you are using a backing, you will first need to glue it to the base and then lay the carpet to the backing.

  • When buying carpet, add another 10% to the required volume... This allowance will be enough for the carpet to occupy the entire area of the room (even with uneven walls and no right angles).
  • In order for the carpet to be "obedient", it is necessary to bring it into the room at least one day in advance.... Work on the correct laying of carpet must be carried out at an air temperature of at least +15 degrees, the temperature of the glue and the material itself from +17 degrees and humidity not higher than 75%.
  • Carpet can only be laid when all other repair work is completed..
  • If there are joints, seams should be made perpendicular to the windows, then they will practically not be visible.
  • You need to take care of the carpet with a powerful vacuum cleaner in a "dry" mode, and remove heavy dirt with special means.

The ease of use of the flooring largely depends on its correct installation. Violation of technology will lead to earlier wear. The correct laying of the carpet is not such a difficult task and it is quite possible to cope on your own. And it won't take much time.

Carpet laying can be different. The choice of a specific method depends on the purpose and size of the room. But in order to make a final decision, the manufacturer's recommendations must be taken into account. So, here are the stacking technologies that exist:

There is one more thing. It is recommended to lay a special underlay under the carpet. Even if a very short and dense pile mat is used, some underlays will give a soft feel when the foot is “buried” in the mat. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is that when using a carpet underlay, the service life of the coating is almost doubled. And one more plus is the increase in sound insulation.

Carpet underlay - types, choice

If you want to have a soft, comfortable floor on which you can not only walk, but also sit and lie, it would also be nice, put a backing under the carpet. This layer makes it possible not only to get a soft floor, but also to make it easier to remove the coating and change it. And if a dense and thick substrate is laid, it will also improve sound insulation. Not dramatically, of course, but it will be quieter.

Laying carpet with a backing takes place in two stages. First, a substrate is glued to the prepared base. After it has dried, the coating is laid. The method of fixing the carpet to the substrate can be any. Again, it depends on the load and the availability of furniture on wheels, the need for replacement, etc.

The substrate can be:

  • textile;
  • felt (natural or synthetic);
  • reinforced;
  • foamed vinyl;
  • polyurethane foam materials;
  • rubber (grooved or flat).

In principle, it is necessary to select according to a set of characteristics, but it is important that the substrate is elastic. Checking its elasticity is simple: you need to crush it. If it crumpled up without effort, it will not work. If it was possible to squeeze only slightly and after releasing the effort, it immediately took its previous shape - normal. Some types of substrates (rubber, for example) cannot be crumpled at all. But it also depends on the thickness. Optimal for a house and apartment - 0.65-1.00 cm.

By the way, if linoleum is laid on your floor and it does not come off, did not go in waves, but simply lost its appearance or is tired, it can also be used as a substrate. In the sense - it is not necessary to delete it.

How to lay carpet on linoleum? Yes, in any way. Carpets with a rubberized layer can be laid by any method. Even just with tape fixation. It is better to glue softer felt-based options, but not on glue, but on a retainer (read below).

Base requirements

In order for the carpet to serve for a long time and not lose its appearance, it must be laid on a flat surface. Since the coating is "hairy" and elastic, there are no special requirements for evenness. The coating will follow the outline of the base. But in places of sharp drops after a while, scuffs form - here the coating is subject to increased wear. To prevent this from happening, here's what to avoid:

  • Sharp changes in height - steps, pits.
  • Unstable base.
  • Dust, debris, sand.

All these shortcomings are easily eliminated. In general, everything is clear with dust and debris - thoroughly clean with a vacuum cleaner before laying. It is better to eliminate irregularities. If there are noticeable differences in height, they can be sanded or filled with putty - if it is a plank floor, or covered with repair mixture - if the base is concrete. If you don't want to buy a repair compound, you just need to mix cement (1 part) with sand (3-4 parts), add a little PVA and dilute with water. But the disadvantage of such a composition is that it must be left for at least two weeks so that there is no excess moisture in the base. Repair teams work faster.

If you want to lay the carpet on a wooden floor, you first need to level it. You don't have to do u for this. Under the carpet, you can sand the board or lay plywood. Plywood is expensive these days, so any dense and durable sheet material (GVL, etc.) will do.

You can lay the carpet on any dry and even base: on a concrete, wooden floor, on laid plywood, OSB and other materials

If you want to lay the carpet on a concrete floor, then you can leave nothing on the screed as long as it is dry and even. But for a more comfortable feel, you can use a backing or plywood. If so far only. If necessary, you need to take care of waterproofing.

How to join the carpet

First of all, try to make the joint not in the area where they walk or which is constantly in sight, try to calculate so that most of the joint is under the furniture. If it doesn’t work, it’s not critical. You just need to make the joint neat. There are two ways to dock carpet.

The first way

The first option is suitable for covering without a pattern and with a short pile without loops. We carry out the pruning already on the spot - after we have laid the cover “on the permanent place of registration”. The joint is perfect.

Next, we glue the carpet at the junction. We turn the coating to the sides, apply glue or glue double-sided tape. We return the coating, smooth it, press it. When fixing, we try to make the connection without any gaps at all. It has some elasticity, so everything is real.

Second way

The second method of joining two pieces of carpet is both easier and more difficult. Only he is available on the cover with drawings. First, the edge of one piece is trimmed - between the loops. Factory edging is rarely normal. But if you have no flaws, you can do it without pruning. The second piece fits with the selection of the pattern (if necessary). If the edge does not fit somewhere, we cut it between the loops again.

When joining carpet, the choice of method depends on the availability of a pattern

This method is usually used for medium to long pile carpets. Small errors are not visible, as they are covered with nap. But there is still the possibility of achieving an almost perfect match when gluing. When laying the carpet with glue, retainer or tape, you can stretch or tamp the carpet a little until it fits perfectly. You know how to join the carpet. To decide, you can try both techniques on small clippings. This will help you understand what is best for you.

Free laying of carpet and fixation on tape

To lay the carpet in a free way, you need to know some tricks. First, if it is not possible to cover the floor with one piece, the joint is glued. You can't do without it. The simplest option is to fix the joint with double-sided tape. Two strips of double-sided tape on both sides of the seam.

You need to cut the carpet with a sharp knife, placing a board or plywood down

Second. You cannot lay only the material brought from the store. We bring the carpet into the house and let it rest for several days - at least two for sure. Next comes the actual laying of the carpet. First, we measure exactly the size of the room. We proceed from the fact that there should be a gap of 5-8 mm to the walls. This is the so-called expansion gap. It allows the coating to grow and shrink with changes in humidity and temperature. If the covering is laid close to each other, as the temperature rises, “waves” will appear on the covering.

Carpet laying technology under the skirting board

So, we cut the carpet to the required size, spread it indoors. This is not all. There are a few more steps.

Free-laying carpet is suitable for rooms up to 12 square meters. With an area of up to 20 squares, it can be glued onto an adhesive tape. It must be glued around the perimeter and in stripes every meter. Additional stripes at the junction.

We use scotch tape

The technology for laying carpet on scotch tape is not too different. We start work after it has been lying down for several days, cut it to a little less than the size, wait a couple of days. If the gap remains within the desired range, we begin to fix it. We turn away the covering from the walls towards the center. We fix the adhesive tape in the designated places and along the walls. If you fix the covering with skirting boards, then glue it at a distance of about 20 cm parallel to the walls. With a free flooring "up to the baseboards", we glue the adhesive tape just next to them.

Laying carpet under the skirting board is suitable for small spaces up to 12 squares of area

If necessary, roll the cover and glue the tape in the previously occupied area. Then remove the protective tape, roll out the cover. It's simple. It is important that when fixing the carpet, it is rolled out gradually, without waves. To do this, we smooth it with a board, pressing it with an edge. You can also use a large spatula.

How to lay carpet on a gripper

Laying carpet on a gripper is one of the varieties of free laying. It's just that the cover does not lie under its own weight, but is slightly stretched and fixed on the pins of the grip rail. To work, you need special tools. They cost a lot, so hardly anyone will buy them for one-time use. In general, we will describe this method, rather, for acquaintance.

These are grippers. But this way of styling is unpopular right now.

A gripper is a plank made of wood with spikes sticking out at a certain angle. The slats are nailed to the floor close to the walls. A covering is cut out with a margin - for the curvature of the walls. The carpet is laid in the middle of the room and rolled out to the walls. With the help of another device, it is pulled and caught on the protruding spikes. Surplus is trimmed with another special device flush with the wall. The edge is covered with a strip of the same carpet.

Gluing

In large rooms (over 20 square meters) or under heavy floor loads, the best way to install carpet is gluing. But today, gluing can be different.

You can lay the carpet on glue or on fixing

Types of carpet glue

Until a few years ago, gluing carpet was the main technique. It was the glue that was used. But in this case, it is difficult to remove the coating. Often it delaminates - a part remains glued to the base, a part comes off. Today there is a composition called fixation. It does not completely freeze, but forms a sticky layer. Like the one on the scotch tape. That is, after processing with fixation, the entire floor becomes a huge scotch tape and the carpet can be repaired several times. How much depends on the smoothness of the base. If it is felt, hairs remain on the glue. And "several" in this case - two or three. If the base is rubberized, then you can peel it off up to ten times.

So, there are two types of carpet adhesives:

  • Glue. Bonds to the base. When dismantled, part of the coating remains glued. It is necessary to delete it somehow. When applying, use a B1 spatula. Average consumption is 450-500 grams per square meter.

  • Retainer. Creates a sticky film (like scotch tape) that simply holds the coating in place. When dismantling, the coating is removed completely, some "hairs" may remain. If it is necessary to replace the adhesive, it is removed with a special remover. Carpet fixation is applied with a velor roller or A1 trowel. The approximate consumption is 150-200 grams per square meter.

So laying on fixation is more reliable than on adhesive tape. If "not very" stuck right away, you can rebuild without problems. Or remove and clean the contaminated carpet, and then re-lay it. But how to glue the carpet to the floor, you choose. Maybe you trust regular glue more. That's your business.

Retainer technology

Laying the carpet for fixation differs from ordinary gluing in that after applying the composition, you have to wait some time - 20-30 minutes, until the composition dries up and stops getting dirty. It's easy to check - just touch it with your finger. If it sticks but stays clean, you can stick it on. And again, the brought coating must be kept at home for at least two days. Then you can start styling.

Here is the technology for laying carpet for fixation:

As you can see, fastening the carpet to the latch is not too difficult. The best part is that if it doesn't work, you can try again. So you don't have to worry too much. And there is no need to rush. Carpet installation can take as long as you need, as the fixing layer does not change over time. Comfortable.

Laying carpet on glue

When using a traditional adhesive, the technology is different, but only in terms of working with the glue itself. The procedure - carpet spreading, cutting, rolling - all this is exactly the same. Only after applying the glue do not wait, but immediately roll out the coating and immediately smooth it out. The task is to press down well so that no blisters form.

When laying carpet on glue, you need to spread the base and roll out the covering

To glue the carpet to the floor well, you need to act quickly. The term for a possible correction is far from endless. Therefore, at a fast pace, we apply glue to the second half and glue it, achieving a match on the seam. Until the glue has set, you can try to tear off the previously glued edge, if necessary. But if the time has passed, it is better not to risk it and seek a match at the expense of the more "fresh" part. That is, all the corrections are only later applied in half.
