What to hang a chandelier from the ceiling. How to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling

Mounting a chandelier to the ceiling is a responsible matter, requiring care and minimal knowledge in electrics. First, you need to completely assemble it. The design of most of these lighting fixtures is not very complicated, and there is always a manufacturer's manual. In a word, this task can be handled easily, so we will go directly to the technical part of installing a chandelier on the ceiling.

Dealing with wires

Many people who are going to independently install a chandelier on the ceiling are most concerned not with the technical part of the work, but with how to connect the wires correctly. We will address this issue in this section.

Let's start with the basics. See how many wires come out of the ceiling, and also how many keys are on the switch. If there are only 2 wires, then turning on different parts of the chandelier with a two-gang switch will not work - you need a third wire. If you have 3 wires coming out, and you want the light to turn on in different parts of the lamp, then in the lighting fixture, the wires that go to the thread of the cartridge and the ground wire are twisted together, and the rest are divided into 2 groups, and are also twisted together.

On a note! Bad contact leads not only to heating of the wire, but also leads to premature failure of the lamps.

To work, you need such a tool: pliers, a regular and indicator screwdriver, a terminal block.

An indicator screwdriver is needed to determine the wire connection points. Touch the tip of the screwdriver to the threads in the cartridge, and with your free hand touch the wires coming out of this cartridge in turn. When you touch one of them, the indicator should light up. The wires of the same color will be the "ground". Twisted bundles of wires must be inserted into the terminal block, and firmly fixed in it.

Mounting methods.

There are 2 main methods:

  • on the hook.
  • on the mounting plate.

Hook

This was once the most common mounting method for a chandelier. The lighting device was simply hung on a hook sticking out of the ceiling; it was originally removed during construction. Most modern lighting fixtures are mounted in a different way, however, the hook is still quite used.

How to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling using a mounting bracket

Very often, modern lighting devices in the kit have a special mounting plate, so it must be properly prepared before installation. Nuts and screws on it are always fixed so that the main fasteners are inside, invisible from below. The bar is inserted from the inside into the chandelier and the nuts are tightened until it stops - the bar should be flush with the chandelier bowl, or slightly below it. But these procedures are done at the very end.

The bar must be attached to the ceiling and through the holes make marks for future fastening. Remove the plank and drill holes, insert dowels. Next, they attach a bar to the ceiling, and the chandelier itself to it.

How to hang a chandelier on a wooden ceiling? The basic principles are the same, only the bar is attached to the surface using wood screws.

Power connection

When the switch contacts on the wires are open, there should be no voltage on the wires. It's easy to check - the indicator on the screwdriver should not light when touching the wires. Check if power appears on two wires when it is turned on, use the same indicator screwdriver for this. The remaining one wire is the "ground", it must be connected to the common bundle of wires of the chandelier. If this is not the case for you, then your switch disconnects the ground, not the phase. If your chandelier is equipped with incandescent lamps, or LED lamps, then you can not change the principle of wiring, but such wiring is not suitable for housekeepers - they will blink. If you are having difficulty, consult with a familiar electrician, often in lighting stores they can give comprehensive information on connecting a particular chandelier.

Advice! If the lighting fixture is connected to a dimmer, then under no circumstances should a housekeeper be installed!

Mounting to concrete floor

In this section, we will talk about the features of fixing a chandelier on a concrete ceiling. To do this, they also take the mounting bar, apply it to the surface and mark the attachment points. It happens that the ceiling slab consists of hollow slabs, this can be understood by the easy movement of the drill. In this case, you need to slightly move the attachment point or turn the bar in a different way so that the holes do not fall into the hollow areas. If hollowness is everywhere, then use anchors. You can also mount a wooden rail into the ceiling slab, and already fasten the bar to it with screws. Keep in mind that a dense concrete floor can only be drilled with a Pobedite drill. Always take a drill according to the diameter of the fixing dowel.

On a note! Take care in advance that dust does not penetrate into the punch chuck. It is easy to solve this problem - put a disposable cup on the base of the drill, and all the dust will fly into it when drilling.

After the holes are drilled, you can proceed to attach the bar. How to do this is described above. Fasten the bar securely, but do not overdo it, because it can be deformed if you press it too hard.

We fix the chandelier on the plasterboard ceiling

What difficulties arise here? The fact is that drywall material, although durable, will not hold a heavy chandelier. Therefore, you first need to decide on the type of lighting device.

There are such ways to install a chandelier:

  • The place of attachment of the chandelier, if it is quite large and heavy, is additionally reinforced with metal profiles. This should be done at the stage of installing a drywall construction, and it is quite reasonable to always do this, because the chandeliers are periodically changed. Even if a fairly light lighting fixture is being installed now, it’s not a fact that in a couple of years you won’t want a spectacular large chandelier.
  • You can also install a small chandelier to the drywall itself. But first you need to buy special fasteners (spring dowels, butterflies). In this case, it is not necessary to additionally strengthen the attachment point.

Attention! During such work, it is necessary to de-energize the room. If for some reason it is impossible to turn off the power, then all work must be carried out with rubber gloves of an electrician. And it is best then to use the services of an electrician.

Gcl can withstand a load of not more than 6 kg per square meter. That is, if your chandelier weighs less than 6, and preferably 5 kg, then you can install it directly into drywall. However, keep in mind that hl is much weaker than concrete, therefore, its deformation may occur during the operation of the lighting device - replacing lamps, wiping from dust. Also, replacing the chandelier in this case is problematic - it will hold on weaker. In no case should you make new holes for fastening near the old ones.

How to Attach a Hanging Chandelier to a Plasterboard Ceiling

Consider these 2 mounting options

  • Holes are drilled in the HL and a spring dowel or butterfly is inserted. The spring dowel is tightened with a nut, and the butterfly is tightened with a self-tapping screw until it clicks. Both fasteners must have a stud or hook. Next, hang a chandelier on the hook and connect the wiring.
  • At the marked points, holes are made into which butterfly dowels are inserted, a bar is attached to them, on which the lighting device is also installed. The main difficulty of this method is that all the wiring is done first, and only then the chandelier is fixed to the ceiling.

In the second option, you can’t do without an assistant - someone should hold the chandelier while you figure out the wiring.

How to choose the right chandelier

The choice of lighting fixture must be approached very responsibly. After all, it should provide sufficient illumination, and organically fit into the interior, and not damage the expensive ceiling covering.

Pay attention to the weight of the chandelier, if you are going to attach it to a plasterboard ceiling, it should not exceed 5 kg. In the case of other cladding, the weight of the lighting fixture is not important.

With stretch ceilings, you can not use chandeliers with incandescent lamps, the best choice is LED lighting.

Regardless of the type of lighting fixture and ceiling material, it is best to opt for energy-saving lamps.

Most importantly, you should like the chandelier and effectively emphasize your interior.

In custody

  1. Installing a chandelier on the ceiling is a responsible matter, requiring care, accuracy and certain knowledge of electrics.
  2. This process can be divided into two main parts - wiring and fixing the structure to the ceiling.
  3. There are two main types of fastening: on a hook and on a special bar. In the first case, the chandelier is simply hung on a hook and the wires are connected. In the second, you need to attach a bar to the ceiling, and already a lighting fixture to it.
  4. Installing the luminaire in a concrete ceiling is quite simple - drill holes and fix the structure in one of 2 ways.
  5. Installing lighting in drywall sheets is a more difficult task. For heavy chandeliers, you will need additional reinforcement of the attachment point with metal plates. If the chandelier is light - up to 5 kg, then you can mount it directly in the hl with the help of special fasteners.

The choice of lighting fixtures for the apartment must be taken responsibly. When purchasing a lamp, first of all, you need to figure out how to properly mount the chandelier to the ceiling and correctly connect it to the mains.

In order to cope with the task and do everything right, you need to prepare the tools so that nothing distracts the master during the installation of the chandelier on the ceiling:

  • you need a ladder of sufficient height (you can get by with a table);
  • hand electric drill or puncher;
  • pliers and wire cutters or side cutters (from electric shock, the handles must be insulated);
  • various screwdrivers (including those with an indicator function);
  • spool of electrical tape;
  • several mounting blocks (with a margin), for wire clamps;
  • the necessary fasteners on which the chandelier will be installed on the ceiling.

Before fixing the ceiling chandelier, be sure to read the instructions for connecting it to the mains. Usually it gives a detailed description of all operations, so the master, who is a little versed in electricity, should not have any special difficulties.

Types and methods of fastening

When choosing your lamp, even in the store you need to pay attention to the mounting methods.

Modern ceiling lighting fixtures are available with several intended types of fixtures for a chandelier:

  • a loop on the fittings of the luminaire, which allows you to install it to the ceiling hook. This is one of the main types of ceiling chandelier mounting. In this case, the base should be as strong as possible, for example, concrete floors.

Hook mounting scheme

  • fixing the ceiling chandelier to a bracket or a special mounting plate. With such fasteners, the load from the weight of the luminaire is divided into several different points. The bracket is attached to the ceiling with dowels with self-tapping screws screwed into them. In this case, the weight of the chandelier should not exceed 1.5-2.0 kg.

Scheme of mounting on the mounting plate

  • a cross or a double perpendicular bar allows you to hang a lamp adjacent to the ceiling, for example, a chandelier-plafond. The cross bar is not much different from the bracket, except that the fastening is carried out at more points and the lighting fixture can have a large mass.

Mounting on a cross-shaped bar is used, as a rule, when installing square luminaires

  • reliable I-beam platform for mounting a massive heavy chandelier. Allows fastening at multiple points.

The scheme of fastening a heavy chandelier to the platform

Mounting work on hanging the lamp usually does not cause great difficulties. As a rule, dowels with self-tapping screws are used to mount the chandelier on the ceiling. The diameter of the self-tapping screws must correspond to the size of the hole in the mounting plate, they must not be shorter than 4 cm and not longer than 6 cm in length.

Having considered the types and methods of fastening, you can decide how to install the chandelier on the ceiling correctly, without unnecessary and unpleasant consequences.

Ceiling hook mounting

Usually, a hook for fixing lighting fixtures is mounted during construction work. In this case, before you hang the chandelier on the ceiling, you need to check it for strength.

mounting hook

To check, for a while, a load is suspended from the installed hook, corresponding to the weight or slightly heavier than the chandelier. If the fixed load has not shifted, you can safely hang the chandelier in place. If the mounting hook has shifted, and even more so, it has fallen out, then you can carry out the installation work yourself.

Chandelier Hook Weight Test

For this you need:

  • make the desired hole with a perforator (if it did not already exist);
  • a properly selected metal anchor or a folding spring dowel with a ring is inserted into it. It should fit snugly against the inner surface of the drilled hole;
  • it is enough to screw a strong self-tapping hook into a wooden ceiling.

This is the simplest method, describing how to attach a chandelier to the ceiling.

Schematic fastening of the holding element

If the ceiling is finished with drywall or a stretch fabric is installed, fixing the chandelier to the hook can become more difficult.

Plasterboard sheets are quite durable, so a small lamp can be mounted directly on the material itself, but it is worth considering small nuances:

  • the mass of the attached lighting fixture must not exceed 6 kg;
  • you should pay attention to the fact that when replacing lamps, you can damage the sheets or accidentally touch a low-hanging lamp with your hand.

Therefore, when installing a ceiling made of plasterboard sheets, it is necessary to think over the lighting of the room in advance, and make a hole in the material under the mounted hook.

If this has not been done, then you can hang the chandelier on a spring dowel or a special butterfly installed in a drilled hole. The dowel will need to be tightened with a special nut, and the butterfly spacer should be tightened with a self-tapping screw until it clicks. All fasteners must be equipped with a hairpin or hook on which the chandelier is fixed.

One of the options for attaching a chandelier if the ceiling is made of plasterboard

When installing a stretch ceiling, you must first take care of how to fix the lamp. It must be remembered that a stretched canvas cannot serve as a fixed base for a chandelier. When mounting a stretch ceiling, workers, before cutting a hole for attaching a lamp, pre-glue a thermal ring. If this is not done, then it will be impossible to hang the chandelier to the ceiling, as the stretched canvas will tear. Connecting wires are output through the cut hole.

With this option, you first need to hang the chandelier on a hook, and then connect the electrical wires, after which the attachment point is covered with a decorative cap of the lamp.

Mounting with mounting plate

Before attaching the chandelier to the ceiling using the mounting plate, it must be:

  • try on the place where it is supposed to hang. At the same time, the decorative components of the lamp, covering the place of attachment and wires, must fit snugly against the ceiling;
  • if this is the center of the room where the mounted hook is located, then it must be bent, but not cut off. Perhaps in the future, with the subsequent replacement of fixtures, it will still come in handy.

Trying on the bar for a future position

  • markings are made for fastening the strap. To do this, the bar is applied to the ceiling and circled with a pencil so that the attached elements do not interfere with the connection to the mains. Mark the drilling locations. Plastic dowels are carefully driven into the drilled holes. The plastic should be ribbed, which will prevent it from loosening over time and starting to fall out of the nest;
  • with the help of screws or self-tapping screws, the mounting plate is attached to the ceiling.

We fix the bar and bend the hook (maybe it will still come in handy in the future)

  • after mounting the connecting wires, the bowl or other decorative element is applied to the installed bar, aligning the connecting holes.

We connect the wires

  • they twist the entire structure with decorative nuts, after which you can screw in the light bulbs and install shades or other components of the lamp.

Completion of work - finished chandelier in the interior

It is worth noting that hanging a chandelier from the ceiling alone can be difficult. One more hand is needed to connect the wires. Therefore, when connecting the lamp to the mains, one person holds the chandelier, the other deals with the wires.

In the case of installation of stretch ceilings, the base for fixing the strip must be installed in advance. This can be an ordinary wooden block of the required thickness, which, before the installation of the canvas, is attached to the ceiling, and then a plank is mounted on it.

Bar under the stretch ceiling

It is necessary to consider how to properly install the lighting fixture on a plasterboard ceiling. It has already been noted that with a small weight of the chandelier, it can be fixed directly to the sheets. With a more massive version of the lamp, you need to take care of an additional substrate in the form of a bar or a metal profile in advance, on which the mounting plate will be attached.

You can hang the chandelier correctly on a crosspiece or I-beam platform in the same way as in the case of a mounting plate. It is worth considering that this option provides for heavy fixtures, so you need to take dowels and screws of greater length and diameter.

You can mount the chandelier on the ceiling with your own hands without any problems, the main thing is to prepare the necessary material and tools, study the attached connection instructions and always have an assistant.

How to hang a chandelier on a hook if the chandelier is with a strap?

During the replacement process, it may turn out: the old lamp hung on a hook, and the new one is attached to the bar. Such a latch, as a rule, is equipped with modern designs. Hanging a chandelier in this case is more difficult, but it will receive an additional shoulder of strength.

Modern chandeliers are equipped with slats. Brackets are screwed to them, which hold the lighting structure. The screws move in special grooves. Before mounting on the ceiling, it is necessary to experimentally determine their best position, which will ensure an easy attachment of the luminaire bowl. Optimally located screws must be tightened with nuts and proceed to installation.

Advice. For installation, use ordinary self-tapping screws with dowels. Often there are no fasteners in the kit. Reinforce self-tapping screws with a small cap with washers.

Hanging a chandelier on an ordinary flat ceiling is easy:

Advice. It is difficult to hold the chandelier and connect the wires at the same time. Invite an assistant.

If a hook is built into the ceiling at the suspension point, which is located in a small recess, this can be turned to your advantage. With the help of a hook, you will be able to further strengthen the bar:

  • wind a strong steel wire to the hook so that a pair of free ends extend to the sides;
  • prepare the bar, mark the ceiling;
    thread the ends into the grooves for mounting on the rails;
  • press the bar to the ceiling and tighten the wire in this position;
  • fix the structure to the ceiling with dowels and self-tapping screws.

Advice. In this case, use self-tapping screws with a head that is smaller than the diameter of the hole. Put washers on them.

Hanging a chandelier with a bar in this way will not always work. The hook can interfere with or disrupt the decorative design. There are two ways out of this situation:

  • bend it to the ceiling with a hammer;
  • dismantle the hook completely.

Safety precautions during the installation of the chandelier

All work under the ceiling must be carried out on a stepladder or a well-secured ladder. Frequent questions arise when hanging a chandelier on a plasterboard ceiling. But the material is strong enough to hold a standard size structure. In addition, it is convenient to screw fasteners into it even without a drill. A suitable hole can be made by hand with a conventional drill. The subsequent installation technique is the same as with the concrete ceiling.

Chandelier installation

Before starting the installation of the chandelier, turn off the power at the switchboard. It is desirable to have a portable indicator device. Before connecting the wire, check if there is voltage in it. It has a phase and zero. The first of them will be shown by the measuring device.

It is important to carefully check the connection. Incorrect switching is possible: the switch on the wall opens zero, and the phase is supplied to the chandelier in constant mode. Such a lamp is dangerous because it can shock. The new wiring has 3-4 multi-colored wires inside. Zero flows in blue, phase in brown and white.

Advice. If possible, also connect the ground. The corresponding core in the wire is yellow or green.

You can hang the chandelier securely with or without a hook. To do this, strictly observe the technology of work.

How to fix a chandelier to the ceiling: video

Modern designs of lighting fixtures involve several mounting methods.

The most common of them are on the bar and hook.

Each method has its own characteristics.

Methods for fixing a chandelier to a suspended and stretch ceiling have their own nuances.

The question of how to hang an ordinary chandelier on a standard do-it-yourself mounting hook is one of the most frequently asked questions when installing a lighting fixture in an apartment. This is the most common model of a household stationary lamp produced by manufacturers. At the same time, the design of the chandelier itself implies the presence of a special mounting element. It can be a chain or a wire with a ring at the end.

In some apartments and houses, chandelier hooks are already installed on the ceilings. In this case, there is nothing easier. It is necessary to assemble the chandelier according to the instructions, connect it to the wiring and install it on a hook. It happens that there is no hook device - the builders simply did not install it. Then you have to install it yourself. However, more on that later.

Methods of fastening to a concrete ceiling

There are three ways to mount a household chandelier on a concrete ceiling:

  1. On the mounting hook.
  2. With bracket bracket.
  3. Directly to the ceiling surface.

The presence of a mounting hook allows you to fix any lighting device. In practice, with its correct installation in a concrete base, a very strong connection is obtained that can withstand even very heavy metal multi-plafond lamps, if their installation is facilitated by the spaciousness of the room.

The bracket bracket makes it possible to fix any chandelier weighing up to 4-5 kg. However, when mounting on this type of fastening, it is necessary to correctly calculate the load and select only suitable fasteners. Conventional self-tapping screws for a concrete surface are not suitable. It is better to use dowels or anchors, having previously drilled holes.

If the chandelier is light, weighs no more than one kilogram, it can be fixed directly to the decorative mounting plate. Naturally, its design should provide for such a possibility. As fasteners, you need to choose dowels and anchor bolts with expansion elements suitable for the concrete base.

How to hang on a hook: step by step instructions

Consider how to hang a chandelier with a hook on a concrete ceiling, following the sequence of installation steps - choosing and installing a hook in accordance with the type of ceiling surface, installing the luminaire itself and connecting the wiring.

Installing the mount, if not available

Some apartments do not have a ceiling hook, and this is not a particular problem - you can buy it at a hardware store. At the same time, the choice of the buyer is offered several options:

  1. Threaded hook (under the dowel).
  2. Anchor hook (anchor bolt).
  3. Hook with expansion elements (for mounting on a suspended ceiling).

Read also How to replace the cartridge in the chandelier

Installing any hook option is not difficult, but technically responsible. First you need to drill a hole of the appropriate diameter. Further, if you intend to install a chandelier weighing up to 5 kg, you can drive in a dowel and screw a threaded hook into it. If the lamp is heavier, it is better to use an anchor mechanism. Its installation is also not very difficult. It is necessary to insert the anchor into the hole to the full length and start scrolling until the expansion elements are fully tightened.

A butterfly hook, otherwise a clamping suspension with special expanders, is installed on a solid suspended ceiling or in hollow core slabs. To do this, a hole of the required diameter is drilled, a hook with closed expanders is inserted, which open in the void and provide reliable support. From below the hook is tightened with a screw

Fixture installation

When the hook is installed and checked for reliability, the installation of the lamp begins. To do this, the chandelier must be completely assembled. However, whenever possible, all lamps, glass and other fragile elements are disconnected. Next, the chandelier is hung on a hook and the wires are connected. If the ground conductors are not used, they are isolated and carefully laid under the decorative panel.

Then the decorative bowl itself is fastened with screws or gaskets, so that the gap to the ceiling remains as small as possible. After installation, all the missing elements are hung on the lamp and the bulbs are screwed into the cartridges. Upon completion, the operation of the chandelier is checked using the switch.

Wiring and Grounding

In order to correctly connect the wires of the chandelier and the mains, it is necessary to establish exactly where the phase, zero and earth fit. As a rule, in the instructions attached to the lamp, there is information and appropriate markings for distinguishing wiring. If the wiring in the house was mounted without a host, but standard color coding was used, then you can find the right wire by color:

  1. The phase is transmitted over the white, black, red, green and gray wires.
  2. Zero is traditionally a blue conductor.
  3. The earth is yellow-green.

Three wires, that is, including the ground conductor, are usually found in metal fixtures. Each wire must be connected according to the scheme and markings offered by the instructions for a particular lamp. All connected wires are subsequently covered with a decorative chandelier panel.

Special cases

Not in all cases, you can use a hook to install a household chandelier. The mounting hook is intended primarily for mounting a pendant type luminaire. However, it allows you to hang a chandelier with a strap, and without a strap on the hook, and without a special bracket. There are other modifications of lighting devices on sale, which can be fixed, and sometimes in a different way, and impossible without a hook.

Can it be attached without a hook

Installation of a light chandelier is possible without the use of a mounting hook. As a rule, such lamps have special holes along the edge of the body. If they are not there, then it is quite acceptable to make them yourself, taking into account the fact that the structural and decorative properties of the product will not deteriorate after that. At the same time, as fasteners, you can choose self-tapping screws for concrete, ordinary self-tapping screws with a dowel or decorative bolts included in the luminaire kit.

In the kitchen I had the following option- two wires from the chandelier and three wires from the ceiling.

As described above, I found where the phase is, the yellow-green wire is ground, the blue wire is zero. We do not need the yellow-green wire, we connect the remaining two wires to two wires from the chandelier, for reliability I used a special block.

Another option - 4 wires come out of the ceiling, and 6 pairs of wires come out of the chandelier.

Again, we find where we have a phase, now these are two wires, we leave yellow-green, blue is zero.

The figure below shows, that the red wires are interconnected by a jumper, and the white wires are connected in three pieces. Now we connect each phase to a separate group of white wires, and connect zero to the red wires.

Eventually, when one button is turned on, three lights are on, when the second button is turned on, three more lights are on.

As you can see, hanging and connecting a chandelier in an apartment on your own is not so difficult. The cost of all materials is cheap compared to calling a specialist at home.
