Examples of small bathroom designs. Small bathroom - a photo of the best ideas for a visual increase in the bathroom

A bathroom is a room in which everything should be as practical and aesthetic as possible. In this article, you can learn about the nuances of a small bathroom, which interior items to choose, which plumbing to give preference to, as well as how to maximize space optimization.

Small bathroom, how to allocate free space.

The standard bathroom dimensions are 4-6 sq. m., everything above (7-10 sq.m.) is a large bathroom.

Bathroom 2-3 sq. m. very small. In such a room, only everything you need is placed, that is: a bathroom and a sink.

Basic principles for arranging bathroom attributes:

  • For convenience and increased space, the door should open outward and preferably into a blank wall (where nothing can be placed);
  • It is recommended to place the sink and mirror so that when entering the room, the eye immediately falls on them;
  • The bathroom should be placed against the wall, occupying the entire space (so that there are no gaps between the wall and the bathroom);
  • To save space, the washing machine can be installed under the sink;
  • A cabinet instead of a washing machine can be located under the sink;
  • You can save space by using a shower stall.

Advice: a bathroom or shower cabin is not installed for one year, perhaps the family has or will have children and elderly people, then the best option for them is a bathroom.

Separate bathroom and toilet

As a rule, the bathroom is 2-3 sq. m. very small. It is necessary to accurately take all measurements of the room, and then choose where and what items will be located. And only then choose plumbing, because if you choose it in advance, it may not fit in size.

Separate bathroom pros and cons:

  • When there are two or more people in a family, it is possible to take a bath and occupy the restroom without embarrassing anyone;
  • Little space, all necessary communications must be cramped;
  • Inconvenience constantly after the restroom is necessary to go into the next room.

Combined bathroom

This option has both pros and cons.

Positive sides:

  • More space;
  • There is no need to go to the bathroom after using the toilet;
  • Possibility to place all the necessary communications in the bathroom.

Minuses:

  • Inconvenience for a large family when the bath is busy and access to the toilet is blocked;
  • The constant smell of freshener in the bathroom.

Advice! If there is a need to combine a bathroom and a toilet, but do not want to create inconvenience, you can purchase a bath curtain.

Corner bathroom - is it a good choice for a small room

A corner bath is a good solution for a small bath. It helps to save some space.

Saving space depends on what size the corner bathroom will be, it can be either modest in size or large.

And also on how the rest of the plumbing will be placed in the room. And already depending on this, she can, as well as eat up space, so optimize it.

In a very modest corner bathroom, an adult, most likely, will not be able to plunge into it comfortably, but will take a shower.

But in this case, you can install a shower stall.

But if the family has a child, it will be more convenient to bathe him in a corner bath.

A shower cubicle is a great option for a small bathroom

The shower stall helps to save a significant amount of space in the bathroom. And also with the help of color and material, you can visually expand the space.

Advantages:

  • Saving space (this is very important in small bathrooms);
  • No splashing water while taking a shower;
  • Cold air does not enter the stall while taking a shower;
  • For children, there are special models with a deep tray;
  • In the shower, the risk of injury is lower than in the bathroom;
  • Saving water (while bathing in the bathroom, more water is spent than in the shower).

Disadvantages:

  • There is no way to completely immerse yourself in the water and enjoy this for hours;
  • Inconvenience for the elderly;
  • Requires daily care (must be cleaned from plaque).

Advice: for optimal space saving, it is better to install the shower in a corner.

How to place the washing machine

The washing room takes up enough space in the bathroom, especially if the bathroom is small.

There are several good placement options for your washing machine:

  • Under the sink (if the places are back to back);
  • Under the countertop, near the sink (you can place a cabinet or shelves under the sink);
  • In the kitchen (can be installed under the worktop).

In the first version, possibly due to the size of the washing machine, the sink will be high. To do this, it is advised to raise the floor during repairs, except for the place where the machine is.

The second option in a small bathroom is less possible if there is already a full bathroom. But if you give preference to a shower stall instead of a bathroom, then there will be enough space.

In this case, a cabinet, shelves, laundry basket can fit into the room without any problems.

In the third case, this solution is quite profitable, since it saves space in the bathroom.

This has a number of disadvantages:

  • The noise from the typewriter (the door to the bathroom can be closed, someone regularly comes into the kitchen, so the noise will be annoying);
  • Often a washing machine is used instead of a basket for dirty clothes; in the kitchen it is less appropriate than in the bathroom (often the door of the machine is open, and this creates inconvenience);
  • It is not advisable to store powder and food nearby (there is a possibility of spilling it during washing, and food may be nearby).

Advice: if there is no desire or opportunity to raise the floor, you can buy a special sink (water lily), and select a washing machine of the required size for it.

Finishing a small bathroom

The bathroom is an important and frequently visited place in the apartment. It should be comfortable, comfortable and functional. The material for finishing the bathroom will depend on financial capabilities, the complexity of working with it, as well as in the future how easy and simple it is to clean in cleaning.

Ceramic tile

This is a commonly used and fairly common material. Ceramic tiles are resistant to moisture, reliable, and tolerate temperature changes well.

The tiling process is not difficult, so you can do it yourself. Such a tile will last a long time, it is easy to care for it and there is no need for special care. She also looks quite stylish.

It can be chosen in any color and size. One drawback of this material is its high price.

Mosaic

This material is used as often as ceramic tiles. The mosaic is resistant to moisture, tolerates temperature changes normally. Also, this material is quite durable and reliable.

Mosaics can be used on the walls of the room, on the bathroom itself, on the sink. It can be chosen in the form of squares, rectangles, rhombuses, hexagons.

And also what is its plus, with its help it is possible to veneer any surface (in the form of an arch, ledge or niche).

Mosaic is cheaper than ceramic tiles, but more expensive than plastic panels. Its most important disadvantage is the laying process (it is quite lengthy and laborious, since it is much smaller than a tile in size). For high-quality work and a good aesthetic appearance, it is necessary to hire a specialist.

Plastic panels

This wall decoration option is cheaper than ceramic tiles and mosaics. Such material also tolerates temperature changes well and is resistant to moisture.

Plastic panels are simple and easy to clean, do not require special products. They are reliable enough if the work is done well and correctly (if the seams are not sealed with a sealant, they will allow moisture to pass through).

Plastic panels can be selected in any color. A very important and significant disadvantage of this material is that mold and fungal spores can appear on it over time.

Choosing a cabinet and a mirror in the bathroom

There is very little space in the small bathroom. Accordingly, everything that is there should be as functional as possible.

At the same time, interior items should be kept to a minimum. They should not take up much space, since the room is small; it is recommended to choose small items.

There are two options from which you will need to build on:

  • Shower cabin;
  • Bathroom.

In the first version, everything is quite simple. A shower can be installed in the corner of the room, a countertop sink in the rest of the room, a cabinet under the sink and a washing machine next to it.

A full-length mirror can be installed above the sink.

Advice: it is recommended to choose a large mirror for a small bathroom, it visually enlarges the space.

In the second version, there is very little space in the room. In such cases, the washing machine is installed under the sink, and above it is a mirror cabinet (it will not eat up a lot of space, it will be possible to store everything you need in it, and you do not need to install a mirror).

Advice! At the stage of repair, it is advisable to think over the future layout of the bathroom (to know in advance the location of the bathroom or shower).

For convenience and space saving, make a niche in that place (for storing soap, shampoo, etc.), it will be much better than additional shelves.

Finishing the floor and ceiling in the bathroom

Most often used in bathroom flooring:

  • Tiles (the material will last a long time, moisture resistant, it is easy to care for it, the floor will be slippery if water gets in);
  • Linoleum (the simplest and most financially profitable material);
  • Natural wood (an expensive option, the material requires constant care, is afraid of moisture (must be treated with a protective coating));
  • Natural stone (the material is quite expensive, resistant to moisture, will last a long time).

The ceiling in the bathroom is most often painted. Less often, a stretch ceiling is made. Both of these options will work well anyway, but a stretch ceiling is much prettier and more elegant.

Advice! It is advisable to make the ceiling and walls in light colors, and the floor is darker.

Choice of light

The light in the bathroom at different times of the day is needed for different purposes, so it is sometimes needed less and sometimes more.

It is very important that this room should be well lit and safety should not be forgotten.

The main types of lighting:

  • The main light (one light source is located on the ceiling, illuminates the entire room, but a curtain is often used in the bathroom (it will prevent light from entering the bathroom));
  • Spotlights (evenly placed throughout the room and, accordingly, there will be no problems with individual zones).

It is necessary not to forget about the work lighting - this is the light above the sink or above the mirror. For this, you can use wall sconces, spotlights or spotlights.

They can be installed above the mirror or on the sides of the mirror (so the lighting is more uniform).

With a full all-inclusive set with a jacuzzi, bidet and hydrobox, of course, it is possible, but in reality it is important to use the space that is available today in order to independently create a successful design of a small bathroom. Even if this space is a legacy of the times of Khrushchev's "generosity" or the typical and inexpressive design of a small bathroom in a panel house. The paradox is that the smaller the room, the more difficult it is to think over its ergonomic functionality (remove all unnecessary, and combine the necessary). Ready-made design solutions for the arrangement of small-sized bathrooms will help to cheer up your imagination. Create a spectacular bathroom lighting will solve many nuances. In this case, it makes no sense to reinvent the wheel, because all the mistakes have already been taken into account before you.

It is worth removing it from the eyes of the wall or finding a narrow tall model.

Bathtubs for bathroom

Let's talk about bowls - bathing is a necessary and enjoyable thing. Therefore, the object itself to be washed will be important. We will talk about corner, standard and sit-down baths.

Standard and hip baths

Standard bathtubs are steel, cast iron and acrylic. Each material has its own performance characteristics and a variety of models.

Cast iron is the longest-lasting option, but acrylic is still gaining popularity, although not as scratch-resistant.

The shape of a standard bathroom can be quite unusual, which makes it just the same non-standard. But the small footage of the room dictates the conditions to us.

The sitz bath is not only used by the elderly or people with disabilities: it is a modern and stylish design.

The hot tub can have a minimum width of 70 cm, while the length of the sitting bowl can be 100-110 cm.

Fitting a corner bath in a small bathroom

Washing machine in a small bathroom: how best to position it

We remember about the condition to choose the most compact models, otherwise there will be little sense in the advice as such. will negate all recommendations for its placement in a small room.

Under, in a corner and even hanging over the toilet, this is especially important in rooms of 2-4 sq. M. The question of how to hide communications must also be resolved.

Advice! It is better to save the plumbing and organize the draining of the machine directly into the sewer.

The interior of a small bathtub can seem royal if you think about what kind of furniture to install. The layout will tell you where to fit the shelves and where, but what kind of objects they will be, this is how the room will be perceived.

Storage system: cabinets and shelves

In this room, even with a high level of humidity, many things are still stored, at least bath accessories. It makes sense to install hanging shelves, a towel dryer, or put up a vertical pencil case.

Even in the bathroom on the side, you can organize a storage system, as well as under it.

Mirrors and accessories

The mirror has long been an indispensable attribute of a bath. The best and traditional location for it is still above the sink.

The shape of the mirrors will help to play with the visual perception of the room.

Lighting a small bathroom: principles and placement options

It is better to forget about a hanging light source: the dimensions of the room will tell you a solid "no". Instead, it is advisable to choose several luminaires, if only without incandescent bulbs. These lamps do not have the right performance for the functions of this room, but the LEDs are fine with that.

There are several general rules for decorating small spaces. If you follow them, even the smallest room will look much more spacious and bright. Do not neglect these rules when creating the interior of your home bathroom.

  • Use light colors for finishing. In the design of a small bathroom, bright and too dark colors can only be used as accent colors.
  • Use mirrors - they can visually double the area of a small bathroom. At the same time, do not hang mirrors opposite each other, so as not to create the effect of a "tunnel" - it is better if one wall is mirrored, or two walls converging at right angles.
  • Use glossy surfaces in your bathroom design - they create a play of reflections, which complicate the interior and add light to it. For example, a stretch glossy ceiling would be appropriate.
  • Provide good lighting - the brighter the room, the larger it appears. In a small bathroom, ceiling spotlights are required and additional light sources are desirable.
  • Partitions and even individual pieces of glass furniture will "dissolve" in the air and make the space larger.
  • There should be little furniture, and it should be multifunctional so as not to "eat up" the area of an already small bathroom.
  • Consider installing a walk-in shower instead of a standard bathtub - a small room will be much more spacious.

In addition, in the design of a small bathroom, you can use other "little tricks", for example, install the sink on a long countertop, part of which will go into the space above the bathtub. In this case, the countertop can be used to store shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and other things necessary for bathing.

Important: Remember that corners can be used rationally. A corner bath or shower stall takes up much less space than ordinary straight ones, in addition, you can place a sink in the corner, hang special "corner" shelves.

Remember that hanging plumbing makes not only cleaning easier, but also the visual perception of a small room.

Tiles in modern design of a small bathroom: the right choice

  • Colour

According to the basic rules for decorating small rooms, the tiles should have light colors. Do not forget that cool shades (blue, turquoise) visually "push back" the walls, and a small room seems larger. Warm tones, on the other hand, "bring the walls closer" to the viewer, thereby making the room smaller.

  • The size

The best design option is small tiles. Large format visually will immediately make the room very small, and may even violate the proportions. Part of the walls can be laid out with mosaics.

There is a general rule: a person is impressed not by the size of each of the tiles, but by their total number, which he estimates by eye, according to the number of tile joints. The more there are, the larger the room, according to the psychological perception of space.

  • Texture

In the design of a small bathroom, it is better to refuse from large images, the recently popular 3D design, shiny rhinestones. Stick to the simple is better rule. It is even better if the finishing material has a natural origin or a classic texture. Traditional hog tiles, calm patterns, tiles imitating natural materials such as marble or natural travertine are an excellent choice for a compact bathroom.

The use of wooden surfaces or tiles "imitation wood" ennobles the design of any room, including plumbing. A tile with a small pattern is also allowed, while it is better that it be directed vertically. Mirror tiles in the bathroom design will help to add "extra volume" and look very aesthetically pleasing, however, it requires more complex maintenance.

  • Styling

In the design of a small bathroom, avoid dividing the walls horizontally. Colored or ornamented stripes are best directed from the floor to the ceiling, highlighting, for example, the installation area of the toilet or the "wet" area. Do not lay out large patterns - this will visually reduce a small bathroom.

Important: In design, glossy surfaces have a mirror effect, so their use in small rooms is encouraged.

Design of a small bathroom with a toilet: choosing furniture

The principle of minimalism, according to which small rooms are designed, says: furniture should be as small as possible, and it should be multifunctional. It is even better if the same piece of furniture can perform several functions at the same time.

  • Cabinet furniture

The usual cabinets-"columns" should give way to built-in storage systems, light shelves, niches. Storage systems can be closed with doors, or they can be open. For furniture design, a light tone or a natural wood color is preferable.

Important: If you equip storage systems with glass or mirrored doors, a small room will seem more spacious. In this case, the labor costs for cleaning are slightly increased.

  • Laundry basket

It is an essential element of bathroom furnishings, which, in addition to its purely utilitarian function, can also serve as a decorative element in the design of a room. However, in small bathrooms, such a basket takes up a lot of space and can draw too much attention to itself. Therefore, it is better if it is removed into the pantry, or "merges" with the overall design of the walls. A place for a small laundry basket can be provided in the built-in storage system, and a washing machine can also be hidden there.

  • Mirror

In the design of a small bathroom, mirrors are essential. They not only provide comfort when performing hygiene procedures, but also affect the perception of the size of a small room, increasing it several times. The choice should be stopped on a simple mirror, the larger it is, the better. A small cabinet with mirrored doors above the sink is inappropriate - it drastically reduces the volume of the room. A more radical design option is the mirrored wall behind the washbasin.

Small Combined Bathroom Design: Styling Concept

Minimalism is the style that can be considered the most appropriate for the design of a small bathroom. Its main principles are: light colors in the design, the use of only the most necessary furniture and a minimum of decorative elements. The dimensions of bathroom furniture should be small.

Additional elements in the bathroom design, such as soap dishes, toilet paper and toothbrush holders, bottles of liquid detergents should not be out of the general color range. You can use live plants, small paintings or sea shells as decor.

Compact bathroom: standard bathtub

A bathtub is the most bulky item in a sanitary room. As a rule, it completely occupies one of the walls. If you love taking a bath and can't imagine how to do without it, consider replacing your standard bathtub bowl with a corner or compact one. This will help to save scarce space and put a small washing machine or storage system in the vacant space.

Compact bathroom: shower cabin

To save vital space, consider swapping out your bathtub for a walk-in shower. This will not only visually, but also really increase the free area of a small bathroom, and make it possible to equip it in the most rational way. If the size of the bowl of an ordinary bathroom starts from 170 cm, then the size of a small shower stall (minimum) is only 70 cm. Those who believe that it is impossible to do without a bath can choose a shower stall model with a sit-down bathtub below.

Important: In a small bathroom, the best solution would be to install a shower cabin with transparent doors, it will not clutter up the room. The cleaner and more transparent the glass of the doors, the stronger the effect of visual "dissolution" of the cabin in space.

Designers consider showers to be ideal for small bathrooms. Preference should be given to small corner models - they take up less space and, with the same dimensions, are more functional and convenient to use.

The main advantages of shower cabins over traditional bathrooms:

  • Space is significantly saved;
  • Water resources and financial resources of the family are saved, since when washing in the shower, the water consumption is much less than when washing in the bath.
  • The shower cabin can be equipped with a hydromassage device, which increases the comfort of use and has a positive effect on well-being;
  • The bathroom design looks more modern and stylish.

Important: It is not necessary to turn a small bathroom into a warehouse, the space freed up after installing the shower stall is best not to take up anything, if possible. Observe the laws of ergonomics and place only the necessary items in the bathroom. For example, a washing machine can be installed in a pantry, if there is one in the apartment.

Do you want to know how to correctly design a small bathroom? Then read our article!

A very large number of Russians live in high-rise apartments built in Soviet times. At that time, when developing projects for houses, the main goal was to provide as many citizens as possible with a separate living space. In this regard, the housing did not differ in spacious rooms, moreover, many apartments had a close combined bathroom. If the bathroom and toilet rooms are separate, then they very small area. Therefore, it can be quite difficult to place everything there and arrange the interior accordingly.

When renovating an apartment, the planned design of a small bathroom often causes difficulties for many. Therefore, further we will consider the main factors affecting the ease of use and aesthetics of this room, and also presented several options for its design.

The main components of the equipment and decoration of the bathroom

First you need to decide what you need to consider when choosing a design solution for a room. A plan should be drawn up for the ergonomic placement of all bathroom accessories. Further actions related to the choice of plumbing fixtures, finishing materials and the distribution of lighting fixtures will depend on this step. Thus, each aspect of the design project will be determined step by step.

You will definitely have to draw up a project in which it is necessary to reflect the planned positions of all the required interior elements. The plan for the equipment and decoration of the bathroom may look something like the one shown in the figure. When drawing up a project for the arrangement of this small room, one should take into account the location of the communication channels and, if necessary, think over the possibilities of their movement.

Placing plumbing accessories

First you need to decide on the installation of the main bathroom accessories - a bath or shower, as well as a sink. If the bathroom is combined with a toilet, then the optimal place must be found for the toilet. What size these plumbing fixtures will be depends on the area of the room and on the desire of the owner of the home to make it more spacious.

It should be noted that even in the smallest bathroom, you can ergonomically place everything you need. You may need to choose smaller accessories than was customary during Soviet times. A compact bathtub and a small sink can significantly save valuable floor space. Today in plumbing stores you can find everything you need for a room of any size.

Small room bath

In connection with the fact that the most significant part of the room will be set aside for installing the bath, it is worth starting the planning with it. The best option for a small room would be small ones, which are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes.

If you wish, you can buy a bathtub made of traditional cast iron or steel. The assortment is certainly not so wide, but you can find a suitable option.

Types of toilet bowls

If you have to make repairs in a combined bathroom, then a place should be allocated in it for the installation of a toilet. Today this accessory is produced in three versions - a free-standing wall-mounted or corner, wall-mounted and monoblock toilet.

  • Freestanding toilets - the most affordable, therefore the most popular options. They can have various shapes and sizes, so from the models on sale it is quite possible to choose the one that fits perfectly into a particular space. Such products are a set consisting of the toilet itself and a water tank, which are fastened together directly during the installation process to a permanent place.

The tank can have a flat or angled back wall. Accordingly, the first is designed to be installed near one of the walls of the room, and the second fits perfectly into the corner.

Corner models of toilet bowls will not save space in the bathroom, but they will make it more comfortable to use it for its intended purpose.

  • Monoblock models toilets are a single, inseparable ceramic structure, consisting of a bowl and a water tank. The advantage of these models is the neat appearance and the absence of the risk of leaks at the connecting nodes.

Such kits can also have different parameters and configurations. There are models that fit perfectly into a small bathroom due to a fairly narrow tank and a slightly protruding bowl.

  • can be installed in cases where it is possible to hide the water tank behind the wall finish.

Naturally, such models must be well fixed to the wall, since they do not imply a floor support. For this, special frame structures are used, hidden by the trim. Correctly installed toilets are designed for loads of up to 400 kg. By embedding the tank in the wall, wall-mounted models can save usable bathroom space.

Varieties of bathroom sinks

For installation in a small bathroom, you should not purchase large sinks, especially since manufacturers make compact products that can be mounted on a wall, console, in a corner, or on a specially provided leg. In addition, sink bowls can have a variety of regular and irregular shapes, so you can choose a product for any, even complex installation place.

  • Wall mounted sinks most popular for use for installations in bathrooms. They make it possible to fix it in any area of the wall, including even above the bathroom.

This arrangement allows you to significantly save space in an already small room. This type of sink is installed on brackets fixed to the wall. Water pipes, as well as a sewer channel in the version with wall-mounted sinks, can be hidden in the wall. Thus, you can achieve maximum aesthetics of the interior of the room. Another "plus" of this type of plumbing accessories is affordable cost, which often becomes the main argument when choosing them.

Wall-mounted sinks can be installed on a flat surface of the wall or in the corner of the room, since the manufacturers have provided for such options as well.

  • " Tulip" - This is the second most popular type of sinks. The set of this product includes the bowl itself and the stand-leg, behind which there is the possibility of the supplied water and sewer communications. Monolithic tulip models are also on sale, that is, the two elements are interconnected and are one-piece construction.

The disadvantages of the design include the fixed height of its legs, that is, the sink cannot be installed below or above the distance from the floor provided by the manufacturer.

  • Built-in sink option differs from the previous ones in that a furniture wardrobe or supports built of bricks or slabs connected to the wall serves as a support for it.

Thanks to the design features, it becomes possible to hide all communication lines, as well as use the space underneath for storing detergents and cleaning products, or even place a washing machine there.

Furniture cabinets often come with a sink. They can be designed to be installed along a flat wall or in the corner of a room.

  • Sink console. In this case, a console is a stand designed to install a specific sink model.

Therefore, this design is sold ready-made or made to order in a set. The stand is made in the form of a frame, which can be fully fixed to the wall, have support legs on the outside, or be installed on four supports, that is, not fixed to a vertical surface.

If this variant of the sink is chosen, then it will be necessary to provide for embedding into the wall or closing the communication pipes with a panel, otherwise, they will spoil the entire appearance of the structure.

Console washbasins are most often made in a certain interior style, therefore they are not suitable for every bathroom design.

Cabinets and shelves for a small bathroom

In a small bathroom, there is always not enough space for storing objects and things, which you cannot do without while taking water procedures. Therefore, pendant and multi-tiered floor cabinets are the best options. But at the same time, you need to remember - the more furniture there is in the room, the closer it looks. Therefore, designers advise not to overload the interior and equip storage for the necessary things in one or two cabinets of ergonomic shapes and sizes, with mirrored or light doors that cover their internal space.

Furniture items can be placed in absolutely different places in the room - these are free sections of the wall, corner areas, the space above the sink or toilet bowl.

However, when choosing these furniture accessories for a small room, you need to take into account that they should not have great depth, since wide cabinets will not only take up a lot of usable space, but also visually reduce the space of the room. In addition, light injuries can occur on their corners and ribs when wiping and putting on after taking water procedures. And the need for excessively spacious "storage" is also very doubtful.

There are areas in the bathroom that tend to be overlooked and can be used to accommodate comfortable shelves. For example, the wall above the toilet cistern always remains free, so a shelf or cabinet will perfectly fit there.

Another place that can become functional is the space under the bathroom. A special wardrobe with sliding doors can be purchased ready-made, choosing it according to the parameters of the bath, or you can build it yourself from moisture-resistant plywood or plastic panels. Due to the fact that a large load will not be placed on the shelves and walls of such a cabinet, it does not need special strength.

A good option for ergonomic use of space would be to use the area under the sink. The locker can be open or closed with a hinged or sliding door.

If there is no desire to force and hang the bathroom with pieces of furniture, which nevertheless "eat up" part of the space of the room, then you can use the ideas of arranging shelves or cabinets in shallow niches,which are built from moisture-resistant plasterboard. Thanks to this solution, it is possible not only to obtain closed or open cabinets and shelves, but also to mask irregularities on the wall surfaces.

Niches will fit perfectly over the toilet, sink and even the bathroom. However, when choosing this method of arranging places for storing towels, dressing gowns, and also detergents, you need to take into account that good ventilation must be organized in the room, otherwise closed spaces will not be able to ventilate, and moisture will linger in them for a long time. This factor can lead to an early appearance. However, good ventilation is necessary for any bathroom, regardless of its size and interior design features.

Racks for bathrobes and towels

Other essential elements for bathrooms, which also require space for placement, are hangers or separate hooks for towels and bathrobes.

Finding a place for towels is not difficult at all, as they can be fixed at a low height from the floor. Hooks are installed on the wall, under shelves, or heated towel rails are used as them, which can have different sizes and configurations.

It is more difficult to find a place to store robes, as they are longer, but it is quite possible. There are several options for such solutions. One of them is to fix the hanger on the side of the cabinet.

Another option, especially suitable for a very small room, is to fix the hanger on the door leaf, the surface of which is rarely used and performs only the main function. The surface of the walls is not occupied, the hanger will not interfere with anyone here, and can be used for both towels and bathrobes.

Another area that works well for a coat rack is the wall opposite the tub if installed along the side of the room. Usually, a heated towel rail is installed at this place, which in a combined bathroom can be easily transferred to a free section of the wall above the cistern.

When choosing hangers for bathrooms with a small area, you need to pay attention to the fact that they do not have sharp edges, and its hooks do not protrude much forward, in order to avoid injury while changing clothes or just moving around the room.

What colors are preferable for the bathroom

An important point for decorating a small bathroom is the choice of a color scheme, especially if a design is selected for rooms that do not have natural light.

In this case, light shades are used to create a feeling of lightness and freshness in a room without windows, as well as to visually expand the space. However, it should be borne in mind that a plain, for example, white or light gray room will look boring and unsightly, therefore, it is necessary to create color accents in a bright room. They can unobtrusively complement the main background, giving the room a calm mood, or, conversely, be bright and expressive, attracting attention.

Do not forget that the bathroom is used not only for taking water procedures, but also for a kind of rest and relaxation after a hard day. Therefore, with the help of color, it is necessary to create an atmosphere conducive to this relaxation.

"Wooden" shades are in good harmony with light tones, so they can be used as accents in white, beige or gray interior decoration.

This option will create a calm mood that allows you to rest and relax. If, on the contrary, it is required to raise the emotional state, then it is worth choosing bright colors to accentuate.

You should not choose one color for decorating the walls, ceiling and floor - this will certainly create the effect of a lack of shape in the room, which adversely affects the human psyche. This condition can be described as "the earth is leaving from under your feet." Therefore, in order to feel comfortable, it is recommended to cover the floors with a material that will be several shades darker than the walls and ceiling.

If it is planned to make the floor light, then in order to get away from such an impression, it is recommended to revet the lower part of the walls with a material that has a color several tones darker than the horizontal surface.

To prevent the ceiling from looking too low, there should be no dark, oppressive finish on it. The best option would be to make it the same color as the top of the walls. Such a solution will not only visually raise the ceiling, but also expand the room.

If homeowners prefer frequent color changes in the design of the premises, then you can use "mobile" accessories in bright colors, such as rugs, towels, glasses for storing toothbrushes, etc.

These design elements, made in different colors, can be changed according to your mood. And, it's nice to have sets of certain products made in different shades.

Bathroom lighting

Another important factor influencing the effectiveness of interior design is lighting, the use of lamps of various types and shapes. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully consider the location and brightness of the illumination of a particular area of the room, combining it with the color scheme.

Lighting devices can not only be built into the ceiling cladding, but also installed on the walls and facing the ceiling, finished with light material. Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to achieve brighter illumination than from luminaires installed on the ceiling and directed downward. The white ceiling, well lit from below, gives a bright reflection of the light, as a result of which the effect is amplified two to three times.

In addition to lighting fixtures, it will be useful to decorate some sections of walls or cabinet doors with mirrored surfaces. Thus, the mirrors will also enhance the illumination. True, often an excessive abundance of mirrors negatively affects the mood and even the human psyche.

Another technique that allows you to expand the space due to additional light is the installation of a lamp - a false window, which imitates natural light. In such a device, lamps are installed, equipped with LEDs of white cold light, due to which the bathroom in the apartment takes on the appearance of a room equipped in a private house with a window facing the street.

If the bathroom is decorated in a classic style, and its owners prefer discreet lighting, reminiscent of the light coming from candles, then appliances with openwork lampshades can be used. The intensification of illumination in this combination can be played up with the lower illumination, which will come from the lamps placed under the sink or bathtub, and is directed to the horizontal surface of the floor.

The most popular lighting option in recent years has been to use. In some cases, this approach is ideal for the bathroom, while in others it does not fully justify itself, giving dim light. Especially in those cases when material of dark shades is used for wall cladding.

Therefore, when choosing lamps and their location, it is necessary to focus on the color scheme of the finish. This is the only way to create harmony of two factors - color and light.

Today in specialized stores a huge number of different lighting products are presented, with the help of which you can achieve not only the brightness of light in rooms without windows, but also create multi-colored lighting. But do not forget that not all lighting devices are suitable for this room, with its traditionally humid atmosphere.

What kind of fixtures are needed for a bathroom?

Naturally, those who will not be afraid of high vapor concentration and possible direct hit of water droplets. The publication of our portal dedicated to.

Finishing materials for the bathroom

After achieving complete clarity where the plumbing accessories will be placed, you can start choosing cladding materials for the walls, floor and ceiling. It is the finishing that will do the main thing, and will determine the design direction of the bathroom design. All materials are selected taking into account the recommendations posted above for "playing with light and color".

Ceramic tile

This is the most popular material for cladding walls and floors of bathrooms in high-rise apartments and private houses.

The popularity is quite understandable, since ceramics are highly practical. This characteristic, defined in one word, includes the following qualities of such a cladding:

  1. Durability. The tile can be used for more than one decade.
  2. Hygiene. The material is easy to clean - just have a wet and dry cloth on hand.
  3. Ecological cleanliness. Natural materials are used for the manufacture of ceramic tiles.
  4. Simplicity of styling. An experienced tiler will coat small bathroom surfaces in two to three days. With little experience, this work can be done on your own. If a decision is made to save money and do the laying with your own hands, the process may take a little more time, but a pretty decent amount will remain in the family's budget.
  5. Tall enough thermal conductivity coefficient allows laying the system under ceramic tiles
  6. Variety of finishes. Today the construction market offers a wide range of tiles, the tiles of which differ both in size and shape, and in decorative design. You can choose monochromatic options for various shades by combining them into a single composition. In addition, mosaic tiles can be used for cladding, which have recently gained popularity due to the convenience of their installation, since they are plastic. This type of tile is well suited for finishing curved surfaces.

Solid materials can also be combined with decorative tiles. Moreover, their assortment is so wide that it is sometimes difficult to make a choice.

Another option that can transform walls beyond recognition is a photopanel, which is assembled from several large enough ceramic tiles. Such cladding is also presented in specialized stores in a wide range, as they say, for every taste.

In addition to the photopanel, manufacturers have developed many options for tiles with applied stylized relief plant pattern... This type of material is popular among those owners who prefer an unusual wall design.

Ceramic tiles are also good because they can be used to decorate both floors and walls, so it can be called a versatile material. It goes well with other finishes, for example, floors are tiled and walls are faced with plastic panels.

Facing ceramic tiles are most often square or rectangular in shape.

If you need to visually expand the room, you should choose a rectangular tile with an emphasized elongated shape. To create the desired effect, it should be laid horizontally on the wall opposite the front door.

If there is a low ceiling in the bathroom, which must be visually raised, then such a tile is laid vertically on the walls.

To accentuate the "high ceiling" effect, you can use tiles or a composition of several elements, from which the vertical pattern is laid out.

Plastic panels

Another option for wall cladding in the bathroom, which has become popular in recent years, is plastic panels or PVC lining. This material is also well suited for installation in a humid environment.

The popularity of plastic panels is primarily due to their affordability and versatility, since they can be used not only for wall cladding, but also for the ceiling surface.

The obvious "advantages" of this material can be considered not only its cost, but also a simpler process of installation work, as well as the possibility of dismantling the cladding and reusing it. The panels are fixed to the batten, which can then be reused to secure new cladding of the same type.

The variety of decorative panel designs can also be attributed to their advantages. Their surfaces can be decorated with various patterns, including relief ones. Models are produced that very faithfully imitate the texture of wood, as well as ceramic tiles.

The most common bathroom finishes are light top and dark paneled wall areas. If ceramic tiles are chosen as cladding, then you have to carefully select them in tone and pattern.

Manufacturers of plastic panels have taken into account the preferences of consumers and offer models that are already divided along their length into a lighter upper and a dark lower part. Such panels significantly reduce the time of installation work and allow you to complete the repair in a short time.

If the ceiling in the room is not high enough and it is necessary to visually raise it, then the panels should be fixed vertically. If the room is narrow, but I would like it to look wider, then the panels are fixed on the wall parallel to the horizontal planes of the floor and ceiling.

The uniform pattern applied to the panels also contributes to the appearance of a wider space, therefore it is well suited for cladding a small room. But, at the same time, it must be taken into account - the ornament should not be too large, and the overall color of the panels should not be too dark, otherwise the finish will negatively affect the mood of the bath visitors.

PVC suspended ceilings are even more popular than wall decoration with this material. They are often installed in combination with ceramic tiles, as they are in perfect harmony with it, especially if the color shade is correctly selected.

For the ceiling, it is best to use plain light colored materials as they will support the lighting. But in some cases designers choose panels with a rare pattern, since it is they who look favorably and are in harmony with the wall decoration.

Ergonomics of a small bathroom

The ceiling lined with PVC panels looks elegant, and in case of emergencies with leaks from above, the material will not be significantly affected. The only thing that needs to be done is to temporarily dismantle it from the crate for better drying of the interfloor overlap. When the stove is dry and ventilated, the panels are returned to their place. To dismantle and install the panels from the tools, you only need a screwdriver.

Since we are talking about ceilings, we cannot fail to mention the rack and pinion suspended structures. These lightweight and very original looking systems are gaining more and more fans.

Rack ceiling - what is it, and is it difficult to mount it yourself?

Both in terms of materials of manufacture and in terms of the installation system, the slatted ceilings seem to be specially created for bathrooms. Many people know about them only by hearsay, and therefore do not consider them as a possible option. To fill this gap, read the special article of our portal dedicated to.

Small bathroom design examples

Now that you know what to rely on when planning, it makes sense to consider a few design decisions. Having studied the finished projects, it will be easier to decide on the layout of the room, the arrangement of all devices and accessories in it, the choice of material for surface finishing and the general style direction.

On the example of the implemented interior projects, you can see how some elements can affect the visual perception of the volume of a room. Perhaps one of these techniques will come in handy when drawing up your own designs for remodeling your bathroom.

As mentioned above, light shades are a priority for small spaces that do not have access to natural light, so they will be preferred. However, as an example, it is worth turning to the darker colors of the cladding material in order to visually evaluate these options.

Bright bathroom with a mirrored wall

One of the techniques for expanding the room is to install one or more large mirrors. In this interior, the designer chose as the decoration of the wall, near which the bath is located, mirror tiles, which imitate a large window. In addition to it, on the adjacent vertical surface, above the sink, there is also a mirror in a light frame with a relief plant pattern.

These accessories visually increase the space of a small room, giving it volume, that is, the 3D effect is triggered, which is increasingly being introduced into modern interior design. The combination of light shades of gray and white also contributes to the impression of increasing space. And as a "revitalizing accent", the designer used a strip of warm, close to gold, framing the room's perimeter, which complements the stylistic direction. This element unobtrusively gives "weight" to an almost monochromatic light, airy design, separating the panel part of the room from the mirrored top, which has the effect of transparency. In addition, the shape of the room is thus emphasized.

The designer has also provided for the possibility of introducing his own accents that can give expression to a calm and, admittedly, somewhat boring interior, by equipping a niche built into the wall above the front side of the bath. It is enough to install or put elements with bright shades on the shelves, and throw a rug close to them in color on the floor - and the interior will take on a different look, playing with new colors.

Provence style bathroom

The rustic French style "Provence" has long become a favorite for many Russians. It is used to decorate almost all rooms in an apartment or house. A distinctive feature of this trend is light shades, complemented by floral designs with delicate pastel colors. Furniture and plumbing accessories, also made in this style, are matched to it. In the bathroom interior shown in the illustration, only two cabinets are used - a wall-mounted and a floor-standing one. Despite their compactness, they have sufficient volume to store everything necessary for taking water procedures.

A mirror framed in a white frame is used as a wall cabinet door, which makes the structure lightweight. Thanks to this, it does not clutter up the space, organically fitting into the overall design.

There was a place in the ergonomically arranged space for storing and drying towels and bathrobes. For this, the surface of the wall opposite the bath is used.

Large-sized ceramic tiles were used for wall cladding, which reduces the number of seams dividing it, closed with a grout that barely differs in color from the base material. These factors contribute to the creation of a virtually undivided surface.

If you wish, you can always find an opportunity to revive the interior with more expressive colors. For this, bright towels, a rug, glasses, washcloths, etc. are suitable. These accessories should have richer colors, but close in color to the main finishing materials.

Country style design

The décor of this small space can be described as close to the American country style, which is defined by the wood surfaces, as well as the ceramic tile composition, which has a pattern characteristic of a patchwork quilt.

The interior is not overloaded with an abundance of furniture, and a wardrobe with sliding doors located under the sink performs several functions at once:

  • supports the style selected for decoration with a textured pattern applied to its surface;
  • serves for storing hygiene items, as well as detergents;
  • masks communication channels along the wall;
  • serves as a support for the countertop and sink bowl.

The narrow bathroom space is visually expanded through the use of several design techniques:

  • light, unobtrusive shades, pleasing to the eye;
  • the presence of a large mirror covering the entire part of the wall above the sink and the countertop of the base cabinet;
  • the bath curtains are replaced by a glass sliding partition, which gives the interior a lightness;
  • the cistern of the wall-hung toilet is hidden in the wall, which saves the room from unnecessary details that weigh down the interior.

The chosen calm color scheme for bathroom decoration can always be diluted with bright accents with the help of small accessories.

Zoned bathroom

This design option is suitable for owners of a long and narrow bathroom, since the design is designed to divide the room into two zones using a color scheme. One of the zones is the shower stall, which occupies the entire width of the room and has a darker lining, which, as it were, limits the length of the room. But, at the same time, the transparent glass partition and door separating it do not allow concealing the space.

The main area of the bathroom, which is used more often as a shower, is made in light shades, which significantly improves the mood during morning procedures. Narrow but enough volume a cabinet-stand under the sink is able to accommodate frequently used items and detergents in the bathroom, and is also an excellent "disguise" for the toilet installed behind it.

A good design decision is to choose a light, almost white color for the floor tiles, which plays an important role in enhancing the lighting of the room.

For the walls and ceiling surface of the main bathroom area, one shade was used, which somewhat hides the joint between the vertical and horizontal surfaces, which becomes noticeable only due to the falling shadow. This technique also helps to increase the visible space.

Evaluating this design option, we can call it the most ergonomic, since it provides everything you need and there are no unnecessary details that load the space.

Bathroom interior, made in "English" style

For owners of small "squares" who prefer the English classics, and at the same time who want to equip the bathroom with modern plumbing equipment, the option presented in this illustration is perfect. The English style is defined by dividing vertical surfaces into panel and main parts. Moreover, as a rule, the upper one is distinguished by the lower one in darker shades. In addition, wood accents should be present in this style direction, which can be brought in in the form of pieces of furniture, panels made of light wood species, as well as flooring.

The lighter color of the panels compared to the upper area of the walls contributes to visual expansion of the lower part premises, leaving the rest of their surface out of the zone of attention, which in this case is only an addition to the basic accessories. However, the color of this top area also needs to be carefully considered as it plays a role in creating the mood of the design. For example, this option uses a dark blue pastel shade that makes the overall look calm. If you want to give the interior more expression, you should use brighter colors for decoration.

In the style direction of the "English classics", ceramic tiles are almost never used - the walls are usually plastered or sheathed with moisture-resistant plasterboard. The external cladding can be paint or wallpaper with a pattern that matches the chosen style.

The modern shower cubicle fits perfectly not only into the overall style, but also into the area allotted for it, so it does not seem like an unnecessary element.

The "tulip" washbasin, matched to this interior, has a shape and relief design, which perfectly suits the sustained design.

Supports the styling and framing of the bathroom mirror.

Modern minimalist style

For modernly decorated apartments in which the bathroom area is very small, one of the minimalist styles can be used. It assumes the presence of a small amount of only the most necessary accessories in the room. Moreover, all elements of such an interior should have the most ergonomic shape and size.

In the presented project, the designer divided a small room into two zones approximately equal in area, highlighting each of them with the color of the floor covering.

Due to the lack of the possibility of installing a bath or shower, an optimal solution was found - to equip a shower in the back of the room, separating it from the main space transparent glass opening divider, visually almost invisible. To drain water from the shower, in this case, a ladder and a pipe are equipped, closed with a floor screed.

At the same time, despite the small area in the room, a place was set aside for installing a heated towel rail and a narrow metal sink, which, of course, cannot be done in a bathroom that does not have a bathtub.

The walls of the room are decorated with ceramic tiles imitating marble finishes, which are in perfect harmony with the black floor of the shower area. The wall above the sink is framed with a frameless mirrored panel, which also matches contemporary styles.

Having considered several possible options and taking into account the recommendations received, you can start developing your own project, taking into account the characteristics of a particular room. When carrying out planning, it is advisable to immediately imagine how the planned work will be carried out. This means that the home craftsman will be able to assess whether he will and will be able to perform all the operations or at least some of them on his own. Believe it is gives
