Sliding interior doors with their own hands. Do-it-yourself interior sliding doors: video, photo, installation

Surely everyone at least once thought about installing something unusual in their apartment. In this article, we will find out how to make a door between rooms on rollers with our own hands.

T Those who live in cramped apartments often come up with the idea of installing sliding doors (or compartments) that can at least slightly free up space that can be useful for various purposes, for example, for free passage or furniture placement. In spacious rooms, such structures are also appropriate, since they can advantageously divide the territory. For example, dividing a large kitchen into a dining room and a cooking area. If you know how to hold a screwdriver and other tools in your hands, then installing a door for a room on rollers will not be difficult for you.

So, first you need to get the necessary materials for work:

  1. Doors. Suitable for both single and double doors.
  2. Roller construction.
  3. Metallic profile.
  4. Grooves made of plastic.
  5. Screwdriver (medium size) and drill.
  6. Self-tapping screws and brackets.
  7. Door furniture.
  8. Level and epoxy.

Next, you need to mark the doorway. To do this, add 20 mm to the height of the canvas for gaps from below and above. After you need to put a point, which will serve as a place for attaching the profile. Further from it, two other points should be set aside parallel to the ceiling at the same distances. Then you need to do the following:

  • install the grooves using self-tapping screws, and so that the caps are completely sealed;
  • after that, using a chisel, you need to remove a part of the tree, in place of which there will be rollers;
  • then, using self-tapping screws, the structure of the wheels must be attached to the door. If the version of the canvas is not an "accordion", then the wheels can simply be screwed to the door leaf;
  • then you need to start working with the lock and handles, but here it’s better not to act on your own, as you can ruin the door. It is advisable to move this stage of work to the end, and then hire specialists;
  • then the installed structure is hung on the profile. It is worthwhile to make a supply of limiters in advance, which will prevent the canvas from falling out. It is better to fill them with epoxy glue for secure fastening;
  • after the hinged doors are inserted directly into the grooves.

At the end, the installed door must be checked several times, opening and closing, in order to make sure that it is fit for use. If all is well, you can begin to refine the metal profile. To do this, you need to put a wooden plank on it and fix it using brackets. This completes the installation work. On average, such a procedure takes no more than 3 hours, and experienced craftsmen are able to cope in 1.5-2 hours.

Interior doors that have guide rollers in their design must be installed correctly, otherwise it will be very inconvenient to use them. To do this, you must follow the rules and follow the instructions. Often, novice craftsmen make mistakes when they install an interior door on rollers with their own hands, which in the future affects its performance. Consider what you can not do when installing this design:

When installing doors on rollers, do not forget about safety rules. Also, you can not neglect the rules for using sliding structures. It is not allowed to open or close them sharply, clap and pull. Otherwise, they will fail. In addition, it is very important that the compartment doors can open freely all the way, therefore, if there is furniture nearby that interferes with this, it must be removed to the side.

Summing up, we can say that interior sliding doors are a very profitable and convenient option for partitioning rooms. They are able to visually enlarge the space, it is impossible to get hurt about them, they are durable and practical. If you install such structures correctly, they will serve for a long time and regularly, delighting with their stylish look.

The tightness of standard city apartments forces their owners to use a variety of devices and structures, the operation of which will help save precious living space. Having made sliding doors on rollers with their own hands and installing them instead of traditional swing doors, the owner will be able to free up space for installing furniture or simply increase the free space of the premises. In addition, sliding structures are often installed in large openings between rooms and become a kind of mobile, allowing, if necessary, to divide them into different rooms or combine them into one large hall.

Having understood the principles of installation of such a design, it is quite possible to assemble and install sliding doors on your own, saving on the involvement of craftsmen, if you have the necessary tools at hand, and the owner himself has stable carpentry and locksmith skills and due care.

Advantages and disadvantages of sliding door structures

The choice of specific models of sliding doors depends on the layout of the apartment, as well as on the design of the rooms. But before purchasing interior sliding systems, you need to learn not only about their positive qualities, but also about their weaknesses.

So, sliding doors have the following positive qualities:

  • They provide significant space savings.
  • Unlike a hinged design, a sliding door will never randomly open and close from drafts.
  • Such doors even help to visually expand the small space of the apartment.
  • The advantage is the absence of thresholds in some types of such structures, which is extremely convenient if the apartment is inhabited by elderly or disabled people, as well as small children.
  • A sliding double door is able to divide the room into separate zones, which helps to optimally use the space of a one-room apartment.
  • With the right approach, the sliding door is not so difficult to install and easy to operate.
  • The sliding design is able to bring individuality into the standard layout of the apartment, to transform it aesthetically.
  • Thanks to modern technology, sliding doors are easy to automate, and this distinctive feature can be called one of the key advantages over hinged structures.

However, it is equally important to know the “cons” of such doors, since, having installed them, it will be necessary to observe some conditions for their operation:

  • The roller system and the guide rail along which the door leaf will move must always be maintained in good condition and clean, otherwise they may fail, and one day the door will jam in one position.
  • Usually, a standard sliding structure, unlike a hinged one, is unable to soundproof the divided rooms with high quality, since at least small gaps will remain between the door frame and the door leaf.
  • The door will not be able to contain the smells from cooking if it is planned to be installed at the entrance to the kitchen room.
  • All design parameters during its installation must be well measured, and its elements must be installed perfectly vertically and horizontally, otherwise the door may wedge. However, this requirement probably applies to any type of door structures.
  • Installing a double-leaf door is a more complicated process than one consisting of a single leaf, since the movable canvases will need to be very accurately adjusted not only to the doorway, but also to each other.
  • The high cost of sliding structures also cannot be attributed to the advantages.

Varieties of sliding doors

There are several types of sliding doors. They differ from each other in design, appearance and installation of the working mechanism.

All types of sliding doors have a common principle of operation, which distinguishes them from hinged structures - they move along a horizontal line, along the door and the wall. But, these systems are divided among themselves into various types and can be:

- traditional sliding;

- cascading;

- folding - "accordion";

- radial sliding.

Any of the existing structures can be single-leaf or multi-leaf. So, from two to four door panels can be included in a multi-leaf system.

If the door has not yet been selected, then it is worth considering the features of each type, and only after that decide on the design.

Traditional sliding doors

Traditional sliding doors are divided into suspended, cassette suspended, and having two guides - upper and lower.

  • Bottom and top rail design

This type of sliding doors is the most common, and most often chosen for installation in apartments, as it is considered the most reliable, of course, when the guides are correctly set and fixed. In this design, one or more leaves move along the upper and lower rails.

It should be noted right away that this type of sliding door is quite difficult for self-assembly, since it is necessary to perfectly fit the upper and lower guides to each other.

Find out a completely doable task from a new article on our portal.

The disadvantage of this system is the fact that the lower rail is mounted on the floor surface, that is, either a threshold will be formed, or a recess will have to be cut. In the guide profile, which is installed in the floor, dust and small debris will definitely collect, which can impede, slow down, and sometimes even block the movement of the door leaf, so you will need to constantly monitor the cleanliness of this assembly very carefully.

  • Hanging sliding doors

Suspended structures are also quite popular, as they do not require the installation of a rail in the floor and do not have a threshold, but move only along the upper rail.

The rail is fixed to the wall above the doorway or to the ceiling, depending on the height of the selected door and room. The guide can be located openly or closed with a masking or decorative casing.

The door leaf in this design option will be in limbo, at a distance of 10 ÷ 15 mm from the wall, so you need to take into account the fact that it will not work to put one of the pieces of furniture against the wall towards which the door will open.

Depending on how the interior will be decorated, the false panel that will cover the upper rail can be fixed only on the segment of the door movement or from wall to wall, and sometimes a similar “border” is placed around the entire perimeter of the room. In the latter case, it will serve as a decorative element of the interior and, in addition, will serve as a disguise for curtain rods. The option of fixing the border along all the walls of the room is possible if the door guide is high enough on the wall.

  • Hanging sliding cassette doors

This version of sliding doors can have a suspended structure or move along two rails. Its main difference from previous varieties is the location of the rails and canvas inside the doorway. That is, when moving the door along the guides, it will go into a niche arranged in a wall special for this purpose.

If a similar design is chosen in a private house, then it is usually provided in advance, when building walls or partitions. Well, in an apartment, such a niche is formed from a plasterboard structure, but in this case, you need to consider that the size of the room will decrease by about 100÷120 mm.

The advantage of this option can be called a tighter fit of the end side of the door when it is closed and the absence of an open gap between the wall and the canvas, which means that the sound insulation of the rooms will be an order of magnitude higher than in any other sliding structure.

In addition, by installing a similar kind of doors, you can free up the wall and the space in front of it, adding aesthetics and comfort to the interior.

However, considering all the alterations that will need to be made when installing cassette sliding doors, it is clear that the total cost of their installation will be quite high, even if all the work is done independently.

Cascade sliding structures

The cascading version of the sliding doors is arranged according to the same principle as the traditional one, with upper and lower guides, but differs in that it consists of several canvases, each of which moves along its own separate rail. Therefore, such a system can be moved apart in the form of a partition, dividing the room into two zones, or be assembled near one of the walls and cover the room only by the width of one sheet.

Such systems are usually used as partitions, but they may well become a wall with a door if only one of the panels is moved. Such sliding structures are most often made of natural or polymer glass of different shades, and have a height from ceiling to floor, so the lower guides are built into the floor, and the upper ones are fixed to the ceiling.

Very often, such systems are used to create glazed verandas or terraces - there is always the opportunity to turn the room into an open summer recreation area.

How can you rationally use the veranda or terrace

Modern window and door designs allow you to fully use the premises of the house or outbuildings in the winter, and in the summer, turn them into open cozy recreation areas. An example is, which are described in a special publication of our portal.

Sliding design - "accordion"

The sliding system "accordion" can act as a partition or door. It consists of several canvases interconnected by end loops.

Sliding folding door design - "accordion"

This is a rather complicated design for self-production, and assembly is best done with the invitation of an experienced specialist.

The width of the door panels can be different - it depends on the size of the opening and the free space that can be allocated for the structure when folded.

The "accordion" system can be installed in a standard or wide doorway, as well as a partition that divides the room into zones. When installing it to act as a partition, the rails are mounted on the floor and ceiling.

The characteristic disadvantages of this design include the almost complete lack of sound and heat insulation.

Radius sliding structures

Sliding radius systems give the interior of any room a special charm, but to install them, you will have to create a semicircular plasterboard wall. This type of structure can be used for installation in a doorway or serve as a full-fledged room partition, installed from ceiling to floor.

The radius version is mounted on the upper and lower rails, and can walk along the outer or inner side of the wall, as well as be built into it, that is, the walls empty inside will become a cassette into which the door leafs will hide when they are opened.

A well-made and properly installed structure of this type is capable of creating a sufficiently high sound and heat insulation. However, if there is no experience in installing a radius system of sliding doors and plasterboard structures, but there is a great desire to have such a decorative and functional element in the interior of your apartment, then it is better to entrust its installation to an experienced master - self-installation will be extremely difficult.

Production and installation of a sliding door on rollers

Materials for assembling a suspended door structure

The suspended structure is the easiest option for self-assembly, so it’s worth considering how all the work is carried out and what materials will be needed for them.

  • Depending on the size of the doorway, one or two door leaves will be required. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the massiveness of the canvases, since according to this parameter the fittings elements that should keep them in weight will be selected.

For a suspended structure, the canvas should be larger than the doorway.

  • The upper guide is a rail along which the door leafs will move with the help of roller mechanisms fixed to them. The length of the guide should be equal to twice the width of one or two door leaves.

The top guide is a metal profile. It requires a beam of the same length
  • A wooden beam, equal in length to the rail, and having a cross-sectional size of at least 50 × 50 mm - a guide will be fixed to it.
  • A set of rollers and fasteners, selected according to the weight and thickness of one or two canvases.

  • Quality boards or panels for framing a doorway - making a box.
  • Three architraves - two vertical and one horizontal, for the doorway, and a false panel that will cover the timber and the guide, fixed above the doorway.
  • It can be built into the structure, if desired, it is installed for easier closing of the door leaf.
  • One or two sets of door handles.

  • Anchors for fixing the timber to the wall.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Fasteners for installing architraves and false panels.
  • Mounting polyurethane foam to fill the gaps between the door frame and the wall.

The table below shows the dimensions of single leaf sliding doors and their corresponding doorway dimensions:

If there is no certainty that the door leaf will be made independently with the required quality, then it is better to purchase it ready-made, since doors produced on professional equipment will look much more impressive.

Tools for the job

Now about the tools, without which it will not be possible to make a door system and install it.

The list of the minimum required includes the following items:

  • Electric drill (perforator) with drills for wood and concrete.
  • Circular saw, electric jigsaw and hand saw.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Building level, plumb line, 1000 mm ruler, square, tape measure, folding rule.
  • Electric or conventional planer.
  • Manual milling machine with a set of necessary cutters.
  • Hammer, chisel, pliers.

Door leaf manufacturing

If the door will be made independently, then you need to know what it can be made of, and what models of canvases can be used in this design.

Suspended doors can be solid, paneled or with the use of artificial glass installed in a frame with a different number of lintels. A solid canvas can be made from solid boards, chipboard or well-crafted wooden beams and plywood. It should be noted that all these materials are quite massive, so the finished versions of hanging doors are often made using high-quality plastic or metal, which is used as a frame for installing transparent synthetic glass inserts into it.

In any case, whether the doors are purchased ready-made or made independently, the parameters of the canvas should be selected depending on the size of the doorway. The exact ratios of these dimensions can be found in the tables above.

For example, for a doorway with one leaf measuring 865 × 2175 mm, with a box installed in it, you will need a door with a size of 900 × 2200 mm, and when installing a double-leaf structure in an opening measuring 1765 × 2175 mm, the leaves should have a size of 900 + 900 ×2200 mm.

If a chipboard panel of the right size is purchased as a blank for the door, it can be made lighter by cutting out one or more windows in it, then milling their edges and installing thin plywood or glass in them.

The manufacturing process of a glazed or lightweight chipboard sheet is carried out as follows:

  • The panel is marked up to begin with. In this case, it is necessary to observe the condition that, in any case, at least 150 mm must be retreated from the edges. Thus, the framing of a door leaf made of chipboard should not be narrower than this size.
  • After marking, the inner parts of the panel are cut with an electric jigsaw. In order to carry out this process, a hole is drilled in one of the marking corners, then a jigsaw blade is inserted into it, and the marked parts of the panel are carefully cut out.
  • Next, you need to qualitatively process the inner edges resulting from cutting out the openings, otherwise they will look sloppy. This work can be done in two ways - to process the edges with a milling cutter or to ennoble with a relief glazing bead. The bead is cut to the size of the windows, then glued or nailed around the entire perimeter on one side of the panel.

  • Further, according to the size of the window, glass or an insert from plywood is cut out, and installed in it, pressing against the fixed glazing bead. After that, the inserts on the other side are fixed with a second glazing bead.
  • The end surfaces of the chipboard door leaf can be ennobled with a special decorative thermal tape, which is glued with a conventional iron.
  • If plywood inserts are installed in the cut-out windows, they can be adjusted to the overall color before installation by painting, staining or laminating. Glazing beads should also have a color close to all elements of the door structure.
  • Doors can also be made from timber of different cross-sectional dimensions, but the thickness of the frame frame should not be more than 30 mm.

The beam for the manufacture of such a door leaf must be of high quality and well processed.

The beam from which the internal lintels of the frame will be made must have a smaller or the same thickness as the frame. The size of the glazing bead and the thickness of the panels that will be installed in the formed windows must be thought out in advance, since the first should not protrude outward relative to the surface of the entire door leaf.

It should be noted that the manufacture of a frame door from a bar is a more complicated process, since all elements of the frame are fastened together with extreme accuracy and reliability, otherwise the finished canvas can “lead”, that is, its frame is deformed.

  • There are several methods for joining timber, but the most popular are in the "half-tree" and "in the paw". They are quite simple to cut, keep the structure well from deformation and securely fasten the elements together.

It is better if the bars are fastened together not with metal screws, or even more so with nails, but with special wooden dowels that are driven into holes drilled through the diameter at the nodes of the adhesive joints of the bars. For each of these door frame nodes, it is necessary to use two dowels installed diagonally.

  • In the lower end part of the leaf, over its entire width, a groove is milled for the flag roller or, as it is called in another way, the lower door latch.

Hanging system installation

When the door leaf is ready, it is necessary to fix the fittings on it - these are roller mechanisms, special locks or handles that are different from those installed in the usual swing structures. In any sliding doors, the handles are recessed into the canvas, as they should not interfere with its movement.

  • The first step is to mark the location of the handle on both sides of the door leaf. It should be located at a distance of 35÷50 mm from the vertical edge of the panel.
  • After that, from the marked line, the width of the nest and its height are marked. Further, a distance equal to half the width of the future hole is measured from the upper marking point - this point will be the center of the circle, which is drilled using a crown drill of the desired diameter.

  • The same process is carried out on the underside of the marked socket for the pen. You should get two non-through recesses, having a depth to which the handle will be recessed into the canvas.
  • Then, the wood between the two marked crowns with round recesses is selected using a milling cutter or chisel and a hammer.
  • Handles in sliding structures are fixed in those cut out with glue, for example, “liquid nails”, or snapped onto special fasteners, which are pre-screwed into the resulting opening.
  • The next step on the upper end side of the door leaf, you need to mark and fix the roller mechanisms with self-tapping screws. Under them, most likely, you will have to choose curly grooves with a milling cutter (chisel).
  • The rollers must be fixed at a certain distance from the edges of the door leaf. This parameter is indicated in the instructions attached to the set of metal fittings.
  • Now the finished door can be set aside for the time being, and you can start upgrading, of course, if the door frame is not already installed in it.
  • It is much easier to assemble and install a frame for sliding doors than for swing structures, since it consists of three absolutely even elements - two vertical and one horizontal boards (panels), fastened together with long self-tapping screws.

The box can be made of solid board or chipboard - this factor does not play a big role in this case, since no load falls on the mounted structure. Its only purpose is to give the doorway a neat and aesthetic look.

  • The fastened frame is installed in the doorway and wedged with wooden spacers, which are driven between its panels and the wall to achieve perfect verticality and horizontality of the walls.

The position of the box panels is controlled using a building level and a plumb line. When the structure is installed perfectly accurately, it is fixed to the walls. This can be done by drilling through holes in the boards of the box or by screwing metal plates to the end sides of the boards and to the wall.

  • Further, on the prepared beam, equal in length to the double width of the door leaf, a metal guide for the rollers is fixed with the help of self-tapping screws.
  • Holes are pre-drilled in the beam through which it will be fixed on the wall.
  • After that, roller mechanisms mounted on the door are inserted into the guide rail.

  • The whole structure is attached to the doorway, leveled, if necessary, temporarily propped up with wooden wedges, and then the beam is “tightly” screwed to the wall.
  • Next, the door moves to one side and the other of the guide to determine the places at the beginning and end of the rail where travel stops or stoppers for the web will be fixed. Stoppers in different models of doors may have a different design.

  • The next step in front of the open door, in its lower end part, in the cut out groove, a flag roller is installed and screwed to the floor. It should be perfectly level under the top guide rail.

This lower stop does not allow the door leaf to go to the side, that is, it does not allow its transverse vibrations.

  • Further, the gaps between the wall and the boards of the door frame are filled with mounting foam. After it dries, the protruding surplus is cut off.
  • Then the timber and the guide rail are decorated with a false panel, and the gaps between the door frame and the wall are trimmed.

In the considered case, the installation of the simplest sliding suspended structure, not complicated by unnecessary elements, was presented. Therefore, the installation of such a system seems to be quite affordable for independent implementation by any home master, of course, subject to taking into account all the nuances and following technological recommendations.

Having made an interior door with your own hands, you will not only save a significant amount of money, but you will also be able to embody the most daring design ideas in the interior. Also, there will be no need to call specialists, choose among standard solutions or argue for a long time, defending your vision. But on the other hand, it is necessary to master all the subtleties and nuances of self-manufacturing of door structures.

Features and Benefits

A sliding door is justified not only because it is outwardly beautiful and can fit into a variety of interiors. Its important advantage is the most rational use of space.

Not a single square centimeter will be wasted and it will be possible to divide the room functionally and stylistically, dividing its new parts.

In addition to the listed advantages, such input structures:

  • do not slam shut on their own with a continuous draft;
  • do not interfere with airing the house or apartment;
  • they are distinguished by easy and smooth operation of the opening and closing mechanism;
  • allow the use of automation;
  • eliminate the need to create thresholds.
  • the design itself is extremely simple - the roller mechanism is attached to the canvas and wound into the guides in a certain way.

Types and mechanisms of interior doors

For apartments and private houses, their options are used, such as:

  • compartment doors(with one sash or a pair of sashes moving parallel to the wall along the rails);
  • cassette(at the moment of opening the sashes are removed inside the pencil case);
  • radius(distinguished by a unique form);
  • cascading(each sash has its own, autonomous guide);
  • intraperitoneal(when opening the sash, they go towards, you can only pass through part of the opening);
  • rotary-sliding.

The sliding door mechanism can have a different number of guides and carriages on them. Almost always, a thick-walled aluminum profile is used for the manufacture of rails.

So that the sash does not break out of the guide and does not roll out of it, limiting and braking parts must be added.

Sliding doors are divided into:

  • suspended(held only from above);
  • support(the load from which is distributed only along the lower guide). A typical mechanism that can withstand a load of up to 120 kg does not require the installation of a threshold in most cases.

An open-type sliding door, all structural elements of which are visible, can have a leaf no heavier than 100 kg. In the hidden type, the bottom rails are not used, and they are not compatible with glass structures.

On doors of any type, you can install a closer that guarantees smooth opening and closing.

During the installation process, the slightest irregularities should be detected and immediately eliminated, otherwise the sashes may roll back without permission. Especially often this problem occurs in the compartment system of the Versailles format.

How to install?

For those who do not have much experience in home repair and installation of various door structures, it is best to opt for single-leaf doors. Having mastered the work with them, you can easily cope with more sophisticated systems. The first step is the markup, which will help set the guides. Measure the height with a tape measure, starting from the floor surface, add two millimeters to the resulting value (a gap is needed) and take into account the height of the roller apparatus.

A pair of marks are connected in a straight line. Be sure to make sure that it is completely horizontal (a building level will help with this). Further below this line guides are mounted. The method of fastening depends on the severity of the door. The lightest options can be put on dowels, and more significant ones will require a bracket. The heaviest input blocks should be supported by a beam.

When the roller is inserted into the rails, the sashes and the canvas are attached from above with brackets. If the canvas is made of glass, the fasteners will not be required as usual.

Even if you can easily lift the canvas, involve a partner: it's faster, more reliable, and easier.

Additional nuances

When putting the door with your own hands, periodically check with a level for any deviations, and if necessary, tighten the bolts or other fasteners. The roller mechanism should be masked with a decorative film, and only then the fittings should be installed. Sliding doors that fit into a niche require the formation of a drywall pocket on the adjacent wall.

After completing all work, check that the structure and any part of the mechanism operate without failure, without stress. The rollers should roll along the rails easily and freely, without bumping into obstacles. Extraneous noises and squeaks show that something is done wrong.

Construction assembly

In order for the interior door to be installed, it still needs to be assembled. It is necessary to prepare a set of boards, a tape measure, a screwdriver, a level and fasteners for work. The advantage of self-assembly is that you are almost unlimited in the choice of product parameters.

Most often, pine boards or laminated chipboard are used, the thickness is the same in these cases - 1.6 cm.

If time is more important to you, you can purchase a factory canvas. The joints of boards or plates are covered with PVA glue, after which they are tightened with a clamp. On each side, three supports are added to the screws and the workpiece is left to dry for exactly one day. After the adhesive layer has hardened, you can remove the clamps and soak the canvas with stain. The design of a sliding interior door implies a slope of two or three degrees in the direction in which they close.

But it is quite possible to make a hook, for this they take steel strips 35-40 mm wide, the thickness of which is 3-3.5 cm. An angle grinder will help to cut such steel into the necessary fragments. In the workpiece, clamped in a vice, holes are prepared for the roller axles. The product will last long enough if the canvas is painted with a special primer. M8 bolts are screwed into holes with a diameter of 0.8 cm over the guide. You need to fix the guides above the opening in order to set them in the correct position.

From all of the above, we can conclude that it is not difficult to make and install sliding interior doors with your own hands. It is only necessary to carefully observe the simplest rules, and then success will be achieved for sure.

With the help of sliding doors you can create an unusual interior of an apartment or a private house. Using this device, it will be possible to rationally use the space, delimit it into separate sectors, without losing the integrity of the room. Speaking about how to make sliding doors with your own hands, you should know that everything is simple. You only need to understand the manufacturing process and have some skills in working with tools.

Elements that will be needed for the installation of sliding doors:

  1. Videos.
  2. Door covering.
  3. Guide.
  4. Handles. Platbands.
  5. Reiki for decor.

Existing sliding door designs

Today, there are various door systems of this type, which differ from each other in appearance. You should know that the design itself most often remains the same. Such doors are a system that consists of several rollers, guides and canvas. The mechanism of the rollers is fixed to the door, and the rollers themselves move along the guides, which are fixed above the opening. Various models can be equipped with 2-4 sets of rollers, several guides and blades.

Types of sliding doors

The design includes platbands, extensions, special fittings, as well as decorative panels that cover the mechanism itself.

There are a fairly large number of different types of doors, but the following are most often used:

  • sliding compartments;
  • harmonic;
  • cascading;
  • single or multi-leaf;
  • radius.

Fittings for a sliding structure

Sliding doors have an unusual design, so special fittings should be purchased for them. Handles are not the same as found on ordinary doors. The difference between such devices is that they are recessed into the canvas. They must be recessed so that the device can freely move from one side to the other and drive into the opening that is intended for it. The lock mechanism is designed for vertical snapping.

All the necessary fittings are included in the kit along with the finished design. However, if you want to mount handles and locks yourself, then you will need to choose them correctly. In this case, it is recommended to seek advice from specialists or search by model in the catalog.

Mechanisms for doors of this type

Scheme of mounting rollers for sliding doors.

This method of opening occurs due to the movement of the rollers along the guides. The mechanism and rollers should be selected based on the type of construction, the number of wings and the material from which the canvas is made. Different systems may have different weights, and therefore they will exert different loads on the entire product. For example, if we compare an MDF door with 1 sash and a glass product with 2 sashes, then the first one will weigh much less, and therefore a simplified roller mechanism should be selected for it.

When installing doors of some types, it will be necessary to take into account the number of roller mechanisms, in which case it will be important to select the correct guides.

For example, for a cascade design, 2 mechanisms for several canvases and guides with several chutes should be installed. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that in the process of manufacturing cascade and compartment structures, it will be necessary to install one chute for door panels.

As mentioned earlier, the possible period of use of such a device will depend on the set of rollers and the guide. However, in some cases, you will need to install 2 guides - one at the top of the opening, and the other at the bottom. Only in this way will it be possible to obtain a stable and high-quality product with a heavy canvas.

Do-it-yourself sliding door installation methods

The functionality and comfort of the doors can make it possible to implement any interior design solutions for both small and large rooms. Such a product will perfectly fit into the interior, which will make it possible to transform the space of an apartment or a private house.

In most cases, sliding doors are installed between several residential sectors. To zone the room and visually preserve its integrity, doors with 2 leaves should be used. When the structure is in the closed position, it will be possible to get 2 different rooms. When the doors are open, you will get 1 large room. With the installation of such a design, it is possible, for example, to separate the workplace from the common meeting room.

Another option for installing such a product is to install doors between living rooms and a balcony or terrace in a country house. In this case, it is best to use a design that is made of glass. A large amount of light can pass through it.

How to make sliding doors and install them?

First of all, you need to determine the type of structure. After that, you will need to purchase all the necessary items. The installation process itself will be considered using the example of a sliding structure with 1 sash. This door is the simplest and most commonly used. Its installation is quite simple. However, the main points that apply to other types of sliding doors will also be mentioned.

The manufacture and installation of a structure of this type is carried out as follows:

The scheme of installation of sliding doors.

  1. First of all, you need to make a markup for the guides. In this case, you can use 2 options. A tape measure measures the height of the door from the floor base. After that, 17-20 mm is added to the result obtained for the gap between the floor base and the structure to be installed. The resulting height is added to the height of the roller structure and the guide. Next, you need to put a few marks on the wall and draw a line. The second option is practically no different from the first. The only difference is that the canvas will need to be attached to the opening, set marks on the upper part, and then add the height of the roller structure to the result.
  2. Before installing the guide, make sure that the marks are horizontal. This can be done using the building level. If this check is not carried out, the doors may not open correctly after installation.
  3. Next, you need to install the guide along the intended line so that the structure is located under the line. The guide can be fixed in various ways. Some structures are fixed to the wall with dowels, while others are mounted on brackets or wooden bars. The guide should be at a small distance from the wall so that the product does not cling to the opening. It is important to carefully select guides and choose the correct method of fastening.
  4. After the guide is fixed, you will need to insert the fixing screw inside the roller carriage and bring the entire device into the guide. For an ordinary door, 2 rollers are used. But if you plan to install cascading doors, then the rollers should be on all doors.
  5. At the top of the canvas, you will need to install brackets for roller carriages. They should be fixed with an indent of 4-5 mm from the extreme part of the door. If you plan to install a glass structure, then several metal paws should be used as fasteners, which fix the glass between themselves and are tightened with fixing screws. Glass is heavy, so it is recommended to install several guides.
  6. When the rollers and all fasteners are mounted, it will be necessary to put the canvas in place, lift it and screw the fasteners into the brackets at the top of the door. This stage is recommended to be done with a partner who will help lift and hold the structure while the screws are installed. Then you will need to check the horizontality of the structure. If necessary, it will need to be leveled by tightening the bolts.
  7. The opening and slopes can be hidden behind architraves and extensions. The roller mechanism itself will need to be hidden behind a decorative rail, which is hung from above.
  8. At the very end, you will need to install the door hardware.

It is not difficult to make a door of this type if you have all the necessary elements and follow the sequence of actions.

Sections of the article:

The huge popularity of these designs is due to the ability to save such valuable living space. The market offers many different models of such doors. However, having certain skills and using familiar elements, you can make sliding doors with your own hands.

Pros and cons of a sliding door

Before using such an interior solution, you should familiarize yourself with the strengths and weaknesses of sliding structures. Unfortunately, these products do not always guarantee the solution of all interior problems. But making a sliding door with your own hands allows you to solve many problems.

Advantages of sliding doors:

  • Space saving;
  • The sliding door will never close against drafts;
  • The shutters open with the slightest effort;
  • Possibility of automation;
  • No thresholds.

While there are many pluses, there are also significant minuses. If you make sliding interior doors with your own hands, and then install them and use them, this will immediately affect the heat and sound insulation.

In addition, such structures are not suitable as entrance doors. It is not suitable for balconies or loggias. But if there is a wall of suitable length, then glass structures can be used. How to make such a sliding door with your own hands, you can watch the video.

Another disadvantage is the cost of accessories. Prices for fittings are much higher than the cost of the same goods for ordinary doors. Cloths are also more expensive. In the finished version from a factory or a well-known brand, such a design can cost a lot of money. Therefore, it is very important to make a sliding interior door with your own hands.

Types of sliding systems

With all the variety of doors, the mechanism used in them is the same, and the doors themselves can differ only in appearance.

There are several popular designs:

  • Compartment doors;
  • Cascading models;
  • Harmonic;
  • Multi-leaf systems;
  • radius systems.

accessories

An unusual design suggests such unusual fittings. If you are going to make sliding doors with your own hands, you need special locks, handles and other details. Handles and locks for these designs look unusual - the handles are recessed into the canvas. This is done so that nothing interferes with the closing of the canvas.

By purchasing or making a sliding door with your own hands, the canvas can be equipped with all the necessary fittings, or everything will have to be purchased separately. In the second case, it becomes necessary to perform an independent installation. When choosing, you need to carefully examine the accessories.

How the mechanism works

These doors are called so due to a different way of opening and closing, which is not typical for city apartments. The systems work by means of rollers that move along special guide profiles. If you are going to make a sliding door with your own hands, you need to take the time to choose a mechanism that will fit the canvas. Also, the choice depends on the number of wings, the type of door.

The fact is that the systems differ significantly in weight. Therefore, a different weight means a different load on the entire system.

Telescopic (cascade) sliding doors.

When installing some types of doors, it is necessary to take into account the number of rollers in order to then correctly select the guides for them. For example, if you plan to make cascading sliding doors with your own hands, then you will need to prepare two mechanisms for each leaf. The guide profile must have 2 grooves. It is also very important that for cascading structures one groove is required in the guide profile for each leaf.

Here's how to make sliding doors with your own hands. In the video you can see what mechanisms and fittings are used.

Mounting options

Unique characteristics, high functionality, excellent ergonomic characteristics make it possible to implement the most interesting design ideas. This is very important in a very limited space. And the manufacture and installation of sliding doors with your own hands can be the best solution even in large areas.

A popular solution is to install a sliding system in one room, but between two zones.

For example, a double door helps not only divide the room into different zones, but at the same time leave the room intact. See how sliding doors change the room. They are all handmade. These photos show how the space is zoned.

Another way to use structures is a partition that separates the living part of the room and a balcony or terrace. But this is true only for country cottages. But here the right solution would be to create sliding doors with your own hands. Through the transparent glass, sunlight will enter the room, and in summer it will also be warm. If you open the doors, the room expands to infinity.

Often such designs are used in technical rooms. Utility rooms or pantries will be closed and valuable space will be saved. This technique is often used in cramped city apartments.

The most difficult do-it-yourself sliding door to create is a radius model. Here the difficulty is not only in the production of guides, but also in the creation of the web.

Manufacturing process

For starters, here's how do-it-yourself sliding interior doors are made. Watch the video - this video shows the whole process from start to finish.

The first step is to go to the store for accessories and everything you need. But first you need to take measurements. It is very important to know exactly the width, as well as the height of the doorway and the canvas. Knowing these parameters, you can not only acquire everything you need to create sliding doors with your own hands without difficulty and confusion.

Sliding mechanism.

In a hardware store, the first step is to purchase a mechanism. According to the size of door receptions and canvas, consultants will be able to choose the right option. It is worth considering that the length of the guides should be 2 times longer than the canvas. If the system is a little longer, it doesn't matter. You can always cut off the excess.

It is also worth thinking about a new door frame.

It may be necessary to purchase an additional rail for it. Also, before you make sliding doors with your own hands, they usually also purchase decorative strips, as well as thrust rails. If the task is to make a beautiful door, then you should choose the right one tightly.

Web preparation

For preparatory work, a milling cutter or grinder, drill, hammer and chisel are required. Which tool to choose is a matter of taste, but with the help of a power tool, preparatory work can be done more accurately and much faster.

On the lower end of the canvas, a groove is cut in the center. Its width should be 3 mm. It is needed for the installation and operation of the guide. A more accurate groove is made using a milling cutter. In general, creating beautiful sliding doors with your own hands using only hand tools is impossible.

Next, it's time to unpack the mechanism and find the rollers and staples in the package. First, the rollers are connected to the brackets. On the latter, special holes are provided for this.
The resulting nodes are attached to the upper end of the canvas and outline the contours of the parts. Further - on the same end part, grooves are selected equal to the thickness of the fastening part of the bracket. Then, the part is screwed to the canvas body. In the simplest version without a lock, you can consider a do-it-yourself sliding interior door ready.

At the next stage of work, a lock is installed. For work, the same manual milling cutter is used. The place of installation is marked. 900 mm are measured from the bottom of the canvas. There will be a pen here. The lock is cut into the center of the canvas. The length of the castle is divided in half. The length of the lock is set aside from the place where the handle will be. This is done in two directions from the center. Further - at this point they make a niche for the castle. Then the lock is inserted and secured with self-tapping screws.

Professionals recommend that before you make a sliding door with your own hands, carefully mark the canvas. If the markup is incorrect, the door can be irreversibly damaged. If door handles are needed, then grooves or a through hole are also cut out for them. Making a hole is much easier and cheaper.

Mounting the mechanism, installing the door

Installation of the sliding system is simple. If you do not know how to make a sliding door with your own hands, then even in this case, installation is not difficult. All that is needed is the installation of a guide profile strictly along the horizon.

The edge of the guide profile must protrude 50 mm from the edge of the opening. On the other hand, the profile must go to the width of the door leaf. The installation height of the mechanism must be calculated. This size is the sum of the height of the canvas and rollers, as well as the gap under the door.

The distance of the profile from the wall depends on the wall itself. If the wall is even, then everything is very simple. If not too smooth, then perhaps the process of manufacturing and installing a sliding interior door with your own hands can become slightly more complicated.

The canvas is installed on the guides on the side. After the door sits, a stop is attached from below. Now it remains only to equip the opening. Now you know how to make sliding doors with your own hands. It is not difficult, original and ergonomic.

Such doors are a new trend. Many designers use these solutions to create unique interiors. Such designs are also popular in Japan. You can decorate your home and expand the space. In addition, how a sliding door is made with your own hands is a very exciting activity.
