The question of how to make an original ottoman with your own hands is of interest not only to experienced needlewomen, but also to novice craftsmen. And for good reason, because this is an affordable way to update furniture in the living room or hallway, while spending mere pennies. The task is greatly simplified by the fact that on the Internet you can find a lot of step-by-step instructions on how to sew a soft pouf with your own hands from unnecessary things and improvised materials. Such home master classes are especially relevant for students and young families, whose budget does not allow them to get hold of brand new furniture.

How to make an ottoman at home?

In fact, making an original pouf yourself is not so difficult - a little effort, a bunch of unnecessary old things and a drop of inspiration will be enough. It is quite problematic to make a drawing of the future creation yourself - it requires basic drawing skills and knowledge of the basics of geometry. Of course, we once learned all this at school, but have already managed to forget a little. In this case, drawings, assembly diagrams and calculations for materials will serve as a lifesaver.

On their basis, we make templates on paper, which are necessary for the subsequent work on the pouf. But since we are working on the manufacture of designer furniture, you can easily adjust the dimensions for yourself.

The next step is to prepare the patterns. When transferring each part to the fabric, do not forget to make allowances for the seams, otherwise the product will turn out to be much less than desired.

By the way, it is not at all necessary to cut out every part of the future product from the fabric - you can crochet it. There are also ways how to make a homemade pouf without preliminary drawing and paper templates.

How to choose a ottoman model?

There are many different techniques, thanks to which you can make a beautiful and functional pouf with your own hands. It is not surprising that it will be quite difficult for an inexperienced needlewoman to decide on the model of such a product and the method of its manufacture.

To begin with, you should decide where you plan to place your future masterpiece. If in the hallway, then you should take a closer look at the frame models with legs in the classic style - they will not only decorate the interior, but also cope with the "direct" responsibilities assigned to them.

Poufs with a rigid frame will also be appropriate in the corridor, but soft models are quite suitable for the bedroom.

An ideal option for a children's room is a bulky bag that will be quite convenient for children to tinker with.

As for the technique of execution, then be guided by your strengths. If you are excellent at using a sewing machine, then pay attention to the round soft models.

Do you knit beautifully? Look for patterns for crocheting poufs.

Well, if you are a fairly experienced needlewoman, then you can swing at a model with a coach coupler and a box, which will perfectly fit into your interior.

If you wish, you can also make a miniature replica of the chair by making a classic square ottoman with a back and removable cushions.

With all the variety of models and shapes, this piece of furniture will not be difficult to make for those people who have no experience in furniture design. Of course, a bag in the shape of a pear is much easier to make than a leather bedside pouf with a box for storing small things, but both options can be made by a novice craftsman.

First, try to make a simple frameless ottoman for the sofa, which requires a minimum of details, knowledge and experience, and only then proceed to more complex models.

DIY wooden ottomans

Unlike simple frameless forms, you will have to get confused with a wooden product, both with the selection of materials and with the choice of model. Frame products have two basic shapes - angular and rectangular. The first will be preferable for small spaces, as it will help to use the corner and make your interior more functional. This is especially true in a small hallway or a narrow corridor - here large forms like a ball will simply take away all the free space.

In the living room, wooden models stylized as chests or animals look very organic (a white leather hippo will become a real decoration of your home).

When choosing a model, make sure that it fully matches the original style of the room. This means that in a loft interior, an exquisite ottoman with a capitonné carriage tie will look a little ridiculous. The same can be said if you place an ultra-modern 5-in-1 transformer on wheels in a classic living room. The color scheme should also be compatible - in the interior "sky" (in blue and blue tones) light green furniture "hurts" the eye a little.

The wooden frame for the ottoman has another advantage - spaciousness. If you have a small hallway, then you can make a folding pouf bench, which will also serve as a large and roomy shoe rack.

DIY bottle ottoman

A product made from plastic bottles has several advantages at once:

  • light weight - the average weight of one piece of furniture does not exceed 2kg;
  • profitability - the main part of such furniture is household waste and unnecessary old things that cost practically nothing, so you will have to pay only for upholstery fabric;
  • environmental friendliness - this handicraft is considered waste disposal and contributes to the conservation of nature.

You can make ottomans both from ordinary bottles and from plastic eggplants, the main thing in such work is to fix the plastic filler well with tape, otherwise the product will be loose. For the stability of your pouf, it is also worth cutting out the bottom and lid from thick cardboard and also fixing them with adhesive tape. Next, you need to make a fabric cover and the new furniture is ready.

DIY ottoman made of chipboard

As mentioned earlier, wooden models are quite practical and durable. If you don't have natural wood at hand, then you can use wood shavings as well. This material is perfect for making furniture. It makes roomy poufs with a lid and soft upholstery. However, when choosing such a material, do not forget about safety - use only ecological chipboard for furniture, which does not contain formaldehyde hazardous to health.

DIY ottoman made of scrap materials

Experienced needlewomen know that exquisite creations can be made from any unnecessary material. If you are an avid motorist, then you probably have a whole collection of unnecessary tires in your garage. From tires and tubes that you absolutely do not need, you can make several ottomans and a coffee table. To create such an ensemble, you will also need two round pieces of wood and a cover made of foam and fabric. Wood details can be seen with plywood elements.

Are you a fan or a fan of classic furniture? A beautiful ottoman in this style can be made from an old stool, foam rubber and leather upholstery. These simple components make an interesting classic model on short legs with a soft seat.

If you want a beautiful round ottoman, then it can be made not only from a wheel, but also from a regular plastic bucket. For it, you will also need foam rubber, any upholstery fabric (you can use old jeans), a cardboard or rattan cover.

Interesting interior items are also obtained from pompons. They can be either soft or have a rigid frame made of slats. Such furniture is covered with dense fabric, and on top it is sheathed with pre-prepared pom-poms and thick knitting threads.

You can make furniture for the country house from pallets. To do this, you must fasten several wooden pallets with self-tapping screws and cover them with a soft seat made of fabric and several layers of foam rubber.

Country furniture is generally quite unpretentious in execution, so it can be made from plastic pipes, from an old suitcase, from a rope, and even from a wooden coil that remained after the cable was laid.

DIY children's ottoman

Making furniture for a child is a real pleasure, because there are practically no restrictions on shape, style or color. Pear, apple, ball - you can use these shapes when sewing children's pouf bags.

Do not forget about your pets too - they will also appreciate the hand-made furniture. You can make a do-it-yourself ottoman for a cat quite quickly from fabric scraps and filler. However, the step-by-step instructions for making such a product for a cat are slightly different from the usual version. Cats love to hide very much, so make sure that the pouf resembles a cozy mini-house. To do this, simply make a horizontal hole in the base. But the furniture for the dog does not need to be adapted - it will suit the "human" version.

Have you ever wondered how to make an ottoman with your own hands? In fact, it is not difficult. The main thing is to find the necessary materials and tools, and then follow the instructions. An ottoman is a very comfortable thing in the interior. It doesn't take up much space. You can choose from many design options depending on the style of the room. In addition, making it with your own hands is a pleasant business that allows you to embody the most interesting ideas.

How to make a frame pouf

The frame pouf is very easy to make yourself. Such a piece of furniture will decorate the room and will serve as a chair (and very comfortable and soft). In addition, it can also store any small items.

It is necessary to prepare in advance a ruler, glue (carpentry type), a pencil, a stapler (construction), a hacksaw, wood screws, a screwdriver and a hammer. Of the materials, you will need a special fabric with which we sheathe the frame. It is necessary to choose exactly the one that is intended just for the decorative upholstery of upholstered furniture. In addition, you need another 1 bar with dimensions of 15 * 4 * 4 cm, a pair of piano loops, 4 rollers for furniture, chipboard with dimensions of 175 * 240 * 0.16 cm.All this is taken on the basis of a standard ottoman with dimensions of about 40 * 40 * 50 cm.

Before starting work, you must study the step-by-step instructions. It is as follows:

  1. First you need to make the markup on the material, and then the blanks. To make the walls of the structure, you will need 2 cuts with dimensions of 37 * 40 cm.To arrange the side parts, you need 2 blanks, which have dimensions of 37 * 37 cm.In addition, you need to cut out another 1 square with a length and width of 40 cm.
  2. Now you can start cutting out these parts. To do this, you can use a hacksaw.
  3. The beam is supposed to be divided into 4 parts so that the length of each is 37 cm.
  4. Now it is supposed to assemble a box from the cut parts. The height should be 37 cm.
  5. The made structure is fixed with wood glue. It is supposed to be applied from the inside of the product. This will make the part more rigid.
  6. Now it is additionally required to fix the corners with self-tapping screws - this must be done from the outside of the corners. If there is a desire, then the structure can also be strengthened with metal corners, which should be purchased before that in any hardware store.
  7. Now the adhesive is supposed to be applied to the underside of the box. The same applies to the end side of the beams.
  8. Glue the bottom and wait until the assembled frame is dry.
  9. Additionally, insert self-tapping screws into the ends to strengthen the product.
  10. Now you can start making the lid. It is necessary to fix the 4 block-blocks in the inner surface of the box perimeter.
  11. It is necessary to check that the stiffeners are correctly fixed. They should not interfere with the lifting of the pouf lid.
  12. Now it remains to make the upholstery. How to sheathe an ottoman - everyone chooses independently, depending on their own preferences and the interior of the room. It is recommended to use batting, padding polyester, foam rubber, holofiber. The top can be covered with additional upholstery.

Now the ottoman is completely ready. And it's not just a beautiful item - it can replace a chair and a small nightstand for small things.

Ottomans made of bottles and spools

At home, you can make an ottoman from the most unusual items. For example, you can use plastic bottles. There are already many crafts from this material available. A pouf made of it will not only differ in its decorative properties, but also become very practical.

It is necessary to prepare 40 plastic bottles in advance. Moreover, do not throw away the covers from them. In addition, you also need an adhesive tape - choose only a wide tape. For filling, a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber is needed - the material will be used for lining. Additionally, you need scissors, knitting threads, a stapler, a hook or knitting needles that are used for knitting. And of course, you need to choose a decorative fabric for upholstery.

The do-it-yourself ottoman looks like this step by step:

  1. First, make a design out of bottles. All containers must be tightly closed with lids. Use adhesive tape to connect the parts. It is necessary to make several layers of plastic bottles. You can fix all the bottles at once, but experts advise fixing them only a few pieces at a time - this will increase the strength of the structure. When the sections are received, they are also supposed to be fixed together.
  2. Now you will need to do a cardboard pattern. To do this, you just need to attach the workpiece to a circle, the diameter of which is about 40 cm.Then draw lines with a pencil. Then cut 2 circles. Both blanks must be attached on both sides of the makeshift pouf and secured with tape.
  3. Next comes the lining. It is necessary to cut 2 circles of the same diameter as the previous blanks. In addition, you also need to cut out a rectangle, which is supposed to wrap the structure on the sides. Using a stapler, you should fix the foam rubber or other material that is used for linings on the structure. The linings will still need to be additionally sewn together along the connection lines.
  4. You need to make a cover. For this, any dense fabric is used. You can choose a special material that is used for upholstery of upholstered furniture, but if this is not possible, then any other will do - the main thing is that it is dense enough.
  5. At the end, sew the side and upper parts of the pouf to the lower part.

Now the pouf from ordinary plastic bottles is ready. By the way, it can be done with a back. In this case, it is still necessary to make a blank of the shape that the pouf should have. The back of the product must also be sheathed with foam rubber and decorative fabric.

You can make a round ottoman with your own hands from a coil. If the interior of the room is made in a rustic or classic style, then you can decorate it with a pouf, which is made from a coil. As a result, a durable and reliable product comes out that you can decorate as you wish. The pouf will turn out to be original and interesting.

You need to find a wooden coil. It can be made not of wood, but of chipboard - this option is also suitable. You also need cardboard, upholstery, batting or foam rubber, foam and adhesive mass. Of the tools, you need to prepare a drill, stapler and sewing machine in advance.

The instructions for creating a pouf are as follows:

  1. Cut out parts with the planned shape from the foam. They should be the same size as the coil tops. Fix the parts with glue.
  2. Now you need to make a template to work with soft interlayer and decorative fabric. To do this, on paper or film, it is supposed to cut a circle with dimensions the same as at the tops of the spool, but you also need to make a small allowance in order to stitch these parts.
  3. Wooden circles are supposed to be smeared with glue and to fix circles that are cut out of foam rubber on them.
  4. It is necessary to wrap the entire structure with cardboard and fix it with glue and a stapler.
  5. After that, you need to wrap the pouf in batting and also fix it with a stapler. First, it is supposed to measure everything, and then remove everything unnecessary.
  6. All that remains is the upholstery. The material should be stretched, but not too tight.

At the end, it remains only to attach the legs to the structure.

How to make fabric poufs

You can make a multi-colored pouf from the fabric. An original product comes out. It will need different pieces of fabric, but they should all be combined in shades. In addition, fillers and lining material are needed. You also need large buttons.

The algorithm of actions is quite simple:

  1. First, think over the pattern. It is necessary to draw a circle whose diameter will be the same as that of the planned product. Then divide the circle into 4 parts, and then each part obtained by another 3. Now it is supposed to cut out pieces in the shape of petals from the fabric. Be sure to leave a couple of centimeters more to connect the joints. The same should be done with the lining material.
  2. Connect all parts.
  3. Now make the lower part of the product. It is best to use a thick cloth. From the inside, the top and bottom of the pouf must be sewn. At the same time, do not sew at the end of 1 petal-shaped part.
  4. Now you need to turn the material out and use the filler.
  5. At the end, it remains only to sew the remaining places and mask the seams with large buttons, attaching them to the top and bottom of the structure.

You can also make an interesting and simple pouf out of a regular sweater. Such an item will fit into any interior, and everyone can cope with its creation. It is necessary to find a suitable sweater - you can even take a worn one, but it is still recommended to choose a product made of wool.

Another interesting option is a pouf that looks like a ball. To create it, you only need polyethylene, fillers, graph paper (to make a pattern) and various fabrics in two shades. This ottoman is very simple, but at the same time comfortable and will fit exactly into any room.

Conclusion

Among all the options listed, everyone can find the one that suits him best. All the described instructions are very simple, so even a beginner can cope with such a task and make a pouf with his own hands. This piece of furniture is very comfortable and practical. In addition, he will also decorate the room.

An ottoman on wheels is a pretty handy thing, especially if it has a lid, under which something else can be removed. After going shopping and even having studied Avito, I realized that there was no suitable pouf anywhere. In stores, either there are no wheels, or the colors are not the same, but on Avito the price tags are almost higher than the store ones, and there are a lot of used ones. Therefore, it naturally flowed out that we had to do the pouf ourselves. A rather easy and fast creation process loomed in my head, but in reality it turned out to be not quite so, mainly due to inexperience. The creation process is described below.

First you need to decide on the size. In height, taking into account the volumetric lid and wheels, the ottoman should not be higher than a standard chair, or it may be lower (depending on what purpose). To understand what dimensions are needed, the easiest way is to take a regular chair on which you are comfortable and measure it. Our pouf is 42x42 cm and 55 cm high. This height is uncomfortable and should be 45-50 cm, but it just so happened, because I invented the production technology right during the process of creating the pouf. To make your pouf lower, then parts 2 and 3 (see drawing) will be not 380 mm high, but 330 mm high.

We will make the pouf from chipboard and upholstery with dermantine with foam filling. Below is a drawing. On it, numbers 6 and 7 designate holes for a 7x50 confirmation at the end of the part and on the plane, respectively. Such designations are adopted in the office for sawing chipboard in order to indicate them schematically in the drawings. True, they require that a distance of 32 mm be observed between the holes, but you can put up with this. How to make holes yourself is possible.

Blueprints

Assembly

Finally, the parts are made, we begin assembly. Do not forget to set the correct moment on the screwdriver, otherwise it will drive the confirmation too deep (

Padding

We agreed that the pouf will be filled with foam rubber (polyurethane foam). To do this, we need a sheet of foam rubber (usually sheets are 2x1 meter) with a density of EL3040 20 mm thick. The walls of the pouf will be packed in one layer, and the lid will be voluminous and filled with three layers glued together. Of course, it is advisable to use a solid 40-60 mm thick, but in order to save ...

You can mark or cut the foam rubber directly on the workpiece, placing something under the foam rubber so as not to cut the floor.

Cutting out the foam rubber for two opposite walls (estimated size 38x39.6), glue them to the box using PVA or glue for ceiling plinths. Here it is best to apply glue and then use the foam rubber on the chipboard so that the glue is distributed as best as possible over the surface and does not harden with sausages.

Having glued two sides, we cut out the other two (estimated size 42x39.6), so that the foam rubber covers not only the box, but also the ends of the foam rubber on the perpendicular walls. It will be clearer if you look at the photo.

Cut out the foam for the lid. Everything is simple here - we cut out 3 pieces of exactly 38x38 or using the blank as a template and glue them one on top of the other to the lid. Then you need to cut out the sides, which, taking into account the thickness of the chipboard (16 mm) and three layers of foam rubber of 20 mm each, will turn out to be 38x7.6 cm.The other two sides will already be 42x7.6 cm.

Cover upholstery

Our upholstery will consist of three pieces: 1 for the 67x67 cm cover, and two 86x52 cm for the base.

Let's start with the lid. It is the opening of the cover shown on the left. I'll try to explain:
42 is the width of the pouf, taking into account 2 cm of foam rubber on both sides;
7.5 cm - these are small 1 cm wide flaps for stitching and forming the volume of the lid

To make it easier for us to bend the corners, cut off one of the sides at an angle and bend the other obliquely.

In general, for this business, I specially bought a stapler I have long wanted and cheap staples for it No. 53 12 mm high. Either because of the cheapness (it seems 20-30 rubles), or because of the excessive height, but they had to be hammered down with a hammer. They did not want to fit completely, like those that were included in the 8 mm kit. It could have been true and pulled with nails, but with a stapler everything is more convenient, even taking into account finishing with a hammer))

Well, the lid is ready. You probably need to tighten it as much as possible. In my case, after sitting, folds remain on this cover. But calculating the tension is quite difficult, it seems that you are pulling too much all the time. This apparently comes with experience.

Base upholstery

Let's deal with the upholstery of the base. Dimensions 86x52 consist of: 86 \u003d 2 sides 42 cm each, plus 1 centimeter for two seams and 52 \u003d 39.5 (box height, taking into account the bottom thickness) + 2 (foam rubber on top) + 1.5 (chipboard thickness) + 3.5 (for hem) + 2 (bottom foam thickness) + 3.5 (fold). Probably, he explained it incomprehensibly, but this is how these dimensions were set))

We sew two pieces on the short side on both sides and put the resulting cylinder over the top onto the base, bending inward from above and below. Please note that from above the upholstery is folded directly onto the ends of the chipboard on three sides, except for one where the hinges are attached. This is exactly how (as where the loops are) I wanted to do initially, but then I decided to simplify the process, because the staples enter the end of the chipboard much easier. Thus, the fold turned out to be quite large that it had to be folded inward. I advise you to calculate in advance how you will do this, so as not to waste extra material.

Hinges

I took the usual hinges, although you can use special hoists. It is easier to fix it first to the lid, then to the base, but it is more difficult to attach them in the right place on the lid, so that then the holes on the hinges fall into the plane of the base. I first fixed it on the base, but I had to suffer so that after attaching the hinges to the lid, it would stand exactly in the closed position.

Wheels

I bought the simplest wheels for 13 rubles with a mounting plate. I attached the first wheel by placing the platform parallel to the sides of the pouf, but I decided to place the rest at 45 degrees. It seemed to me more reliable))

Well, that's how it turned out. It was also possible to make a limiter for opening and a handle from a piece of upholstery, but this threatened with additional tangible costs for a seamstress and I decided that in time we would do it ourselves))

The cost

One of the reasons for the appearance of a "do-it-yourself" pouf was the price. I must say that the savings turned out to be scanty. But I just like to do something myself, it's my hobby if you like. So:
820 - chipboard with an additive;
315 - 2x1 foam rubber;
660 - dermantin 138x120 cm;
300 - seamstress services;
45 - loops;
52 - wheels;
38 - Euro screws;
2230 - Total.
However, here it was possible to save, firstly, on chipboard, because I used a laminated one, but it was possible to cut from any. Secondly, if you have a car, then another 300 rubles are saved. I also took good quality Dermantin at 550 per running meter, there was an option to take 450 and even 350

P.S. I learned a lot from
