How to make a cycle mobile. Step-by-step instruction

Step 1: Front Wheel and Steering

Step 2: Main frame

Step 3: Front Fork

When carrying out the equipment of the front fork, a steel element is welded onto the steering column, to which the frame and the driving parts of the velomobile will be attached.

In the pipes attached to the steering column, drilled connectors, through which the design will fit snugly. Such structures should be placed on both sides of the wheel in order for the control to be as coordinated and safe as possible.

Step 4: Rear Frame

To implement the manufacture of the rear frame will need:

  • Bulgarian;
  • Device for welding;
  • Four pipes of the same size;
  • Two pipes are several centimeters smaller than the main ones;
  • Fasteners.

Step 7: Seat Adjustment

In order to organize a comfortable "seat", you must prepare:

  • Pieces of square-shaped metal structures that will serve as the base;
  • Bolts, screws, nuts;
  • Bulgarian;

  • The basis of chipboard;
  • Upholstery (it can be thick fabric, leather, upholstery for car seats).

When all the elements are ready, it is necessary to solder the metal blanks among themselves in such a way that the shape of the chair is obtained. The cycle mobile about which the speech will go was designed and made in a workshop of station of young technicians (SYuT) of our city, together with children circle members. I must say that the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating it came to me much earlier, and therefore I prepared the materials and most of the spare parts (in particular, the wheels) myself, with my own money. True, both the wheels and materials were mostly picked up from abandoned bicycles, so the costs were not so great.

Velomobile - double, four-wheeled. Front wheels - steering, rear - leading. The crew has two pedal drives - each at its own wheel.

The frame of the cycle mobile is a welded, two-spar scheme. However, both side members and the front cross member are made as one piece — bent out of a pipe with an outer diameter of 40 mm — from the handrail of the decommissioned city bus. The ends of the side members are curved upwards and, together with the cross-arms welded to them, serve as supports for the seat backs.

Between the supports of the backs of the seats, the rear cross member is welded in - it serves as the upper support for the suspension units (springs and hydraulic shock absorber) of the rear axle.

The front support of the seats themselves is a low portal, supported by its stands on both side members and also connecting them. In the middle of it is mounted the handbrake handle, and at the ends of the crossbar - gearshift levers.

Rear axle rather unusual design. Its basis is a closed subframe, welded from the backs of the metal beds. On its sides are fixed in the bearings of the drive axle shaft with a three-speed drive sprocket unit.

A parking brake disc is mounted (welded) on the left axle shaft. Service brakes are tick-borne and act on the front wheels. The subframe is connected to the frame (or rather to the portal) by means of a swinging axis and two oblique levers made of equal angle № 2.5.

The front wheel suspension is independent on the springs. The springs are placed in the bushings of the axles of the steering knuckles. The suspension travel is small and it absorbs only minor bumps in the road. Therefore, to soften the blow from the larger irregularities on the axis on both sides of the sleeves, more soft rubber bumpers (thick washers) are installed.

The suspension of the rear wheels - "semi-independent." The subframe is suspended on springs (from the moped "Karpaty") with a hydraulic shock absorber from the moped "Verkhovyna". The wheels of the car are different. Front - from the bike "Kama", rear - from the bike "Ural". But both are reworked: they have had their hub bushings longer (twice).

It should be noted that the assembly of the wheel is not easy, and to facilitate this operation was made jig. A circle with a diameter equal to the wheel rim was cut out of a sheet of plywood, and four pillars with a height equal to the part of the hub protruding beyond the rim were fixed along its circumference. Then a new (elongated) sleeve was fastened with a bolt with a spacer in the center of the plywood circle and the wheel was completed with knitting needles — first the needle was inserted into the hole in the hub flange, and then its end was inserted into the hole in the rim and was fed with a slight stretch. After installing all the spokes, the wheel was removed from the conductor and the spokes were finally tensioned, checking for the absence of the figure-eight wheel.

Front wheels - swivel. The steering is self-made. It consists of a "donut", a tubular shaft and a rack and pinion type steering mechanism with a transverse steering rod. Rail and tip thrust connected by a ball joint. The other end of the thrust is connected to the lever of the steering knuckle of the right wheel, and from it to the left wheel goes another one - cross-wheel steering link. On the front wheels are mounted and tick-borne working (driving) brakes.

The drive of the cycle mobile is pedal. The driver and passenger - each has its own, three-speed, independent. Three gears is enough for movement over any rough terrain. But it should be recognized that when the weight of an empty cycle car is 55 kg to one person, it is hard to pedal even at the lowest speed when moving on the rise.

The pedals are cut out of the frame of the old road bikes and welded at a convenient distance from the seats to the side members. The three-speed blocks of the rear axle stars are self-made, and only the stars themselves are used from the touring bike. Self-made and drive chain tensioner.

The crew seats are homemade. Their base, attached at four points to the frame elements, is made of 1.5 mm thick dural sheet. The basis is laid lining - foam pad, which is covered with a cover of bright nylon fabric.

In the long journey usually took a plastic wrap, which covered other necessary things, laid in the trunk. The trunk was a net stretched between the side members and the front axle beam in the forward part of the crew (not shown in the drawing, but clearly visible in the photo).

I also note that for connecting various frame elements and suspensions into a single design used a household welding machine, and most of the small details of the rotation (axles, bushings, etc.) are machined on a small school lathe.

I confess that in addition to traveling on official business, I used the bike for two seasons (in the warm season) for commuting to and from work. In addition, on weekends, he and his wife or brother went on a raid on nature.

After two years of operation, the D-4 engine was installed on the velomobil, and specifically on its rear left wheel, and its other “life” began as a “moto mobile”. This version of the cycle mobile converted into a moto-equipment, is depicted in the photo.

But a few weeks ago, Louis instinctively rushed after the cat. Everything would be fine if it were not for the leash that was attached to the steering wheel. My bike led to the side, in the end, I was on the pavement. The damage was small, but I was worried that the incident could happen again, and the consequences could be much worse. The decision was made to make by their by hands   something safer than a two-wheeled bike that turned out to be a minor obstacle for Louis.

For the project will need two bicycles and metal structures. Under this should be understood:

  • 6 m   square tubes 3.8 * 3.8 cm;
  • 3.6 m   sq. tr. by section 2.5x2.5 cm;
  • 1.2 m   sq. tr. by section 1.3 x 1.3 cm;
  • 1.8 m   steel pipe diameter 2.5 cm;
  • 1.2 m   steel plate width 5 cm   and thick 0.47 cm;
  • Nuts, bolts, upholstery materials and primer.

I would rate this project as “moderately difficult” because it requires good welding skills, as well as cutting and forming some metal parts. In addition, it is necessary to know how the bike is assembled and disassembled, as well as an understanding of how the gear selector works and how it is adjusted. Step 1: Front Wheel and Steering

The cycle car will consist of one front wheel and the back bridge. The pedals and chain drive will go to the front wheel. For the first homemade   - this design is simple and most economical. However, while driving may experience unusual sensations, but over time it will pass.

Let's start with the bike frame and gear. Using the grinder, cut off unnecessary parts from the frame. Next, we mark and cut out the “bird's beak” in the pipe on which the seat is located. After that, we will bend it in such a way that it is tilted forward, not backward, as it was originally. We weld the seam and strengthen the bent pipe with a steel plate. To begin with, we will make a pattern using thick paper, and then cut a wedge out of a plate with a thickness 0.3 cm   and weld it in place. Cut the bottom of the support.

Saw the steering column from the pipe. Cut a piece of square pipe 3,8   x 3.8 cm2.5 cm shorter than the steering column. Cut one of the four sides of the pipe to make a U-shaped channel. Install it around the head tube and weld it, filling the gaps in the upper and lower parts with small pieces of steel.

Cut off the top of the steering column from the front fork. Remove the seatpost from the saddle. Disconnect the butt joints of the seatpost and steering column. Make sure the tube and pin are straight. To align, insert an appropriately sized pipe inside the pipe and pin. I used 13 mm   tube for sliding inside the steering column, and then a long thin tube for checking the pin. These parts will be joined together, so for reliable contact we will weld the butt joint.

Note : 13 mm nest sacrificed to the cause.

Cut off the remaining "ears" of the attachment fork.

Step 2: Main frame

We will cut the pipe for the main frame 3.8 * 3.8 cm. Cut the edges of the workpiece at an angle of 120 degrees in the upper and lower parts and at an angle of 18 degrees plug. The top cap is about 10 cm. The length of the vertical pipe is about 38 cm   and bottom pipe 69 cm.

To ensure that all lines and welds are parallel, we use two wooden bars and a system of fixings, as shown in the photo. Weld the steering column to the top cap of the main frame.

Step 3: Front Fork

Temporarily assemble the front wheel and steering column with the main frame. Notice that the drive sprocket is now in front, not in the back. For the ratchet to work, you need to turn the asterisks in the opposite direction. As will be shown below, the switch should be turned upside down.

The front fork is attached to the existing mounting holes on the frame. Cut the workpiece dimensions 3.8 * 5 cm   From a piece of steel with a thickness of 0.47 cm, we will drill holes that correspond to the fixing points and fasten it to the frame.

Cut a slot at the end of a 90 cm steel pipe with a diameter of 2.5 cm, and place it on a thin plate. Drill a hole with a diameter of 0.95 cm in the steering shaft.

Place the rod in the steering column. Let us compare the upper end of the steel pipe with the hole in the barrel, and then weld the bottom of the pipe to the steel plate. Let's pick up the phone and finish welding the mounting hinges. Cut off the extra parts of the plate.

Install the lower end of the pipe with the plate, and then drill a hole of 0.9 cm at the top of the pipe to connect it to the steering rod. Use a bolt or threaded rod for attachment to the steering axle. The front fork, which is represented in the photo, has a complete look.

Step 4: Rear Frame

Cut 2 pieces of square tube 3.8 cm   long 76,2 cm   and 4 pieces long 53 cm   and weld them as shown.

Cut four plates 10 cm long, 5 cm wide and 0.47 cm thick. Drill the corresponding holes in each of the four plates. Holes must match the diameter of the axles.

Using an angle grinder, we will make cuts in each plate, the width of which corresponds to the diameter of the hole, while making them slightly wider at the beginning of the cuts.

Let's combine them, using the wheel and axle as a guide, we will weld everything into place.

The tricycle can now safely stand on its own wheels.

Step 5: Brakes

So diverse that for a certain amount a person can get almost everything he dreams about.
