Using the European classification EN 685, there are 3 types of premises:

  3. - intended for production purposes.

According to the load on the coating, they are subdivided:

  • - medium intensity;
  • - at high load;
  • - very heavy use.
  • The material is produced with a multi-layer structure - an upper face layer and a layer consisting of an insulating material. The front layer is made of PVC and, based on the thickness of the top layer, is subdivided into the following types:

    • household (PVC layer thickness 0.1–0.3 mm, class 21–23);
    • semi-commercial (PVC layer thickness 0.4–0.5, class 31–32);
    • commercial (PVC layer thickness from about 6 mm, class 33).

    Next comes a special layer of reinforced fiberglass mesh between the front layer and the bottom layer of the cover. And as insulation, heat is a soundproof layer made of PVC foam.

    To increase the durability of linoleum, a polyester layer is included in the composition, which allows the coating to better tolerate low temperatures.

    To give the material an aesthetic appearance, the surface is covered with a moisture-resistant varnish.

    Linoleum is also used as flooring, cut into squares of various sizes - floor tiles. The tiles are available in various qualities and colors, its use, simplifies the laying of the flooring. The work performed is especially simplified - on the laying of tiles, done by hand.

    Of particular note is the most common use of linoleum for flooring in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and corridors.     Basically, two types of connection are used:

    • cold welding;
    • hot welding.

    Hot welding is mainly used when joining linoleum, in administrative and industrial premises, and cold welding in apartments. How to solder high quality linoleum, quickly and what tool is needed for this? When hot welding, the connection of linoleum is made using a special tool, which makes it possible to do the joining of the edges of linoleum at temperatures above 350 * C.

    For residential premises, cold welding is used, which can be done by hand and is a simpler and more convenient method, consisting of the following operations:

    1. The sheets of material to be joined along the docking seam are superimposed on each other with an overlap of 2-3 cm.
    2. With the help of a long strip, an undercut is made at the place of imposition - one seam is formed between two sheets of coating.
    3. To protect the front side of the linoleum, tape is glued to the seam.
    4. Next, the tape is cut exactly along the seam.
    5. Glue is applied to the back of the material.
    6. Excess glue is removed.
    7. If necessary, a connecting strip is installed on the seam at the joint in the doorway.

    For joining linoleum at home, 3 types of adhesives "A", "C" and "T" are used. Composition "A" is an adhesive composition of a liquid consistency, used mainly when gluing a new floor covering. The adhesive composition "C" is of a thicker consistency and is used for gluing the already used coating during repairs. When using the composition "A", the edges of the linoleum partially dissolve, forming a strong connection.

    The composition "Werner Müller", produced in 2 types "A" and "C", received a positive characteristic as an adhesive for linoleum. One tube is enough for gluing seams from 6 to 10 running meters. Good adhesive properties are possessed by the Homapol composition, which is diluted with water and has universal application.

    For the connection, a "T" class compound is also used, which is intended for gluing PVC linoleum made on the basis of polyester.

    "Hot welding" is carried out using a special tool and a polymer welding cord. When joining linoleum with this method, the molten polymer firmly fixes the two sheets of coating. For the connection, a welding machine operating from the mains is used.

    The welding process consists of sequential operations:

    1. Initially, the edges of the linoleum sheets are processed. With a special knife, a groove is cut out at the place of passage of the seam with a depth of up to half the thickness of the sheet of material.
    2. The seam is thoroughly cleaned of dust and impurities.
    3. The welding machine turns on, a period of time is given for warming up to a temperature of 350–400 * С. A nozzle is mounted on the device and a welding cord is connected.
    4. Using a welding machine, both sheets are connected, under the influence of a molten polymer.
    5. Excess polymer is removed using a special knife.
    6. The seam is created by passing the joint line in both directions.

    The linoleum coating is durable and lasts for years without losing its appearance. The joint seam between the sheets of the cover firmly holds the welded cover, forming a single protective layer. Unfortunately, manufacturers offer softer materials for apartments and houses that cannot withstand such high temperatures.     Cold welding

    This is a great way to do your own hand-gluing operation. Cold welding is often used in the home and is considered very popular for such tasks. Why is the process called cold welding? It is carried out by gluing the floor covering inexpensively without the need to "force" the material with high temperatures.

    How to glue linoleum end-to-end with cold welding

    Its edges should be cut as accurately and evenly as possible. Then they are laid on top of each other so that one joint covers the other by about 3 cm. It is important that they are clean and dry. Before gluing linoleum to the floor, you need to apply paper tape to the material - it will reliably protect the decorative surface from the aggressive effects of the glue. It also acts as a label for the gluing zone. Adhesive tape is applied not only to the top, but also to the bottom.

    Next, the lower and upper strip of floor material is cut simultaneously. The remaining scraps should be removed. Then both are rolled together using a special roller at the joint so that they are aligned in one level.

    The glue is applied to the seam area and is dosed over the entire length. After smearing it on the surface of the linoleum, there should be only a thin strip. Care must be taken not to adhere to the coating surface. Unfortunately, it is impossible to deduce it.

    After performing these operations, the glue is allowed to dry for ten minutes. Then the tape can be removed. Here's how to glue linoleum end-to-end at home - nothing complicated about it. The advantage of this method is the invisibility of the seams, and they themselves can even be curly.

    Cons of cold welding

    Cold welding is a very effective glue, but you should not use it on linoleums that have a soft base or insulation. In this case, the glue will not help to achieve the most accurate joining. The seams will be very noticeable, and their appearance will become unaesthetic.

    Adhesive selection

    In the process of using cold welding, it all depends on the materials that are glued. There are several types for different situations:

    • Glue "A" has a liquid form and is suitable for working with hard linoleums.
    • Glue "C". It creates a special layer on the seam surface and is used for gluing joints up to 4 mm thick.
    • Glue "T" can be used to glue polyester materials.

    Required tools

    Let's take a look at what tools you might need. The selection is carried out based on the type of linoleum. To work with hot technology, you will need scissors and an edge cutter for straight cutting. Further, in order to apply the material, it is worth preparing a spatula, brush or roller.

    Rubber hammers are used for pressing. For hot gluing you need a hot air gun and a cord. If cold welding is performed, then you need glue, a fairly sharp knife, a lot of rags and tape (paper and double-sided will do).

    The needle from the container with glue during cold welding should be fed as deep as possible into the seam.

    This is necessary to get the right amount of glue. A rag will help to quickly remove glue drops from the surface. It is more convenient to work with the tube with two hands at once. The glue consists of very aggressive substances, so you need to work with it very carefully. After finishing the work, it is recommended to ventilate the room. This is due to the fact that in linoleum, which was laid with the use of a special glue, the deformation process under the regular influence of a periodic load differs from the deformation of the same material, the flooring of which was carried out without the use of an adhesive composition.

    The result of the fact that linoleum is glued to the base, for example, only at the joints, will form a noticeable strip along those places where the coating was glued. The outer surface of linoleum glued to the floor will look even and smooth, and along the line of transition from the glued layer to the non-glued one, over time, small stretch marks will appear on the side that was laid without glue.

    Partial adhesion is definitely not worth using. Either apply the adhesive to the entire floor surface, observing the mandatory requirements specified in the instructions, or do not use it at all. Of course, linoleum, which was glued with a special compound according to the correct technology, will hold up much better, but for the household needs of flooring in an apartment, it is quite possible to do without the use of glue.

    Laying linoleum on a floor screed without glue is ideally performed on a previously prepared base. To do this, the surface of the screed should be treated with a special primer, such as Ceresit ST 17. The cost of a 10 liter canister is about 550 rubles. Depending on the absorbency of the substrate, the liquid consumption will be from 0.1 kg / m² to 0.2 kg per 1 m² of the surface. The consequence of processing the base with such a composition will be the dedusting of the surface and the improvement of its adhesion (the ability to absorb paint, varnish or glue), as well as a decrease in the water absorption capacity.

    Linoleum flooring without the use of glue provides for fixing the material along the edges. Near the walls, the best option would be to simply press down the covering with a plinth. As for the joints, here you will need to use a special adhesive, which is also called "cold welding" for linoleum.

    Which cold welding is best? Overview of firms and prices

    Cold welding is a paste-like substance that comes in tubes. One small tube with a volume of 60 ml is enough for joining from 25 to 30 m of a seam, depending on the thickness of the linoleum and the experience of the master.

    Among the popular manufacturers, whose products have been in demand for many years, the following brands can be called:

    • Cold welding Forbo (Forbo) Eurocol 671 - 42 g tube is enough for about 20 m of a seam. Packing price 470 rubles.
    • Homakoll S 401 - a metal tube with 60 ml of paste will cost 250 rubles.


    We do not recommend choosing cheaper types of glue for joints, since there is a high probability of acquiring an ineffective composition that will not make it possible to make a high-quality seam. Once you save on cold welding, you will subsequently have to use the floor covering every day and see a clearly visible seam that could be practically invisible.

    At the same time, do not forget that it is just as important to observe the correct technology for joining linoleum and applying the composition. Next, we will consider in detail the sequence of work.

    Joint gluing technology

    The most important thing here is to ensure the most tight fit of the material along the entire length of the joint. Simply attaching one flat strip of linoleum to another will not be enough. It is necessary to ensure that the coating on both sides of the joint is securely fixed and there is a slight overlap from one side to the other along the entire length of the joint.

    Along this joint, in the middle of the overlap, with the sharpest possible construction knife, an incision is made to the depth of two superimposed layers of linoleum. If you make an incision not in the center of the overlap, but only along one edge, then you may not get a perfectly even tight joint. After a small strip is cut from both halves of the material at the joint, these residues should be removed.


    Further, along the entire length of the future seam, a strip of wide construction tape is glued. Then, exactly along the joint, it should be carefully cut with the same knife so as not to damage the coating and not accidentally jump off the path of the joint line.

    A composition from a tube is applied to the cut seam. Its amount must be carefully dosed, since the space between the halves to be joined is very small and very little will fit for 1 cm of cold welding. If you overdo it and apply too much glue, then some of it will protrude above the surface of the tape, and some will remain under the linoleum and create an additional rise in the seam above the surface of the rest of the coating.


    Excess cold welding protruding above the tape on the joint surface is immediately removed with a cloth. After 15 minutes, the tape can be safely removed. Its function was to prevent glue from getting on the surface of the linoleum, and it did an excellent job with its task. During this period of time, the cold welding completely solidifies and the floor can be used with complete confidence.

    When connecting linoleum based on felt, only this method is used, since the thresholds reliably fix the coating, unlike glue or scotch tape. The use of glue is a more costly process, in addition, it often contains toxic substances that are released during operation. Thresholds, in comparison with the glue method, are safer and do not require periodic ventilation of the room when connecting the joints of linoleum.

    3. Hot welding method. This method is highly labor intensive, requires the use of special tools and skills to work with them. However, the result is a seamless seamless coating that performs well during operation.

    In the process of connecting linoleum by hot welding, you will need:

    • high-power hair dryer;
    • special bundle on PVC basis;
    • knife and attachment.

    Linoleum is installed with a slight overlap, then a groove is cut along the length of the joint. With the help of a building hair dryer, the surface is heated to a temperature of 450 degrees, and then a tourniquet is installed in the groove with a special nozzle and heats up until a perfectly even joint is obtained.     4. Cold welding method. One of the simplest and most reliable options for joining linoleum joints. To complete, you will need:

    • masking tape;
    • a knife with a measuring ruler;
    • adhesive composition for welding.

    Linoleum sheets are adjusted to obtain a perfectly even seam. The edges are leveled and trimmed, if necessary. The edge of the linoleum is pasted over with tape. The coating is cut and filled with a special compound in the form of cold welding. After the weld is completely dry, the masking tape is removed.

    Please note that contact with cold welding on linoleum leads to its destruction and the appearance of traces that cannot be removed. Therefore, special care must be taken when working with this material. If the cold welding still hits the linoleum, wait until it dries completely, and then remove from the surface with a knife.

    DIY cold welding technology for linoleum

    One of the most common methods for gluing linoleum is the cold welding method. It is based on the use of a special adhesive that forms a colorless coating that perfectly seals the joint. Among the advantages of using cold welding to join the joints of linoleum with our own hands, we note:

    • obtaining a monolithic, neat and reliable connection, which is outwardly invisible, is felt only with tactile contact;
    • does not require special equipment, a standard set of tools is sufficient for operation, thus reducing the cost of laying linoleum coating.

    There are three options for an adhesive composition for cold welding of linoleum:

    • adhesive composition A type;
    • type C adhesive;
    • adhesive composition T type.

    We suggest that you familiarize yourself with each type separately. When choosing this or that glue, take into account the peculiarities of the linoleum coating, the accuracy of the joints.

    Adhesive composition for cold welding type A is liquid in consistency, as it contains a large amount of solvent-based substances. Thanks to this structure, the edges are effectively delaminated for joining. However, it will not be possible to connect joints with large joints to each other, since the adhesive composition is too liquid in consistency.

    Therefore, type A adhesive is used to join seams with minimal discrepancies. The adhesive composition is an ideal solution for newly purchased linoleum, which was cut at the factory.

    The adhesive composition of type C is distinguished by the presence of a large number of PVC-based substances in the composition. The adhesive composition has a thick and rich consistency, therefore it easily fills wide gaps between the sheets. An excellent solution for the repair of linoleum covering, which was previously used. The adhesive composition does not require an ideal sheet for fitting, easily fills large gaps. After drying, a neat, almost invisible bond is formed.

    The T type adhesive composition for linoleum is used very rarely and only by professionals, it allows you to connect sheets of multi-component linoleum options.

    Instructions for joining linoleum joints by cold welding:

    1. High-quality welding of linoleum joints allows you to obtain an ideal seam in terms of density, which is not exposed to mechanical stress, as well as moisture and chemicals for cleaning floors.
    2. On site, the joints of the two canvases are fitted with double-sided adhesive tape so that cold welding does not get onto the linoleum.
    3. A strip of tape is allowed strictly along the seam, while trying not to touch the coating itself.
    4. A special needle-shaped nozzle is put on the adhesive composition, which makes the seam less noticeable.
    5. Place the needle inside the incision and fill in the gaps with glue. When glue appears on the tape, move further in the direction. Fill in the entire seam this way.
    6. Drying time for cold welding is indicated in the manufacturer's instructions and is usually about fifteen minutes.
    7. After that, remove the adhesive tape from the linoleum and check the condition and smoothness of the joint.

    How to solder linoleum at home: hot welding technology for linoleum

    To perform hot welding, equipment for welding linoleum is required. A special hair dryer with a nozzle heats the cloth to the required temperature. Linoleum is pre-glued to the base.

    The hot welding method is especially often used for natural linoleum. Additionally, you need to purchase a harness for connecting the joints of linoleum. The joints between the canvases are sealed during the solidification of polymer substances, which are preheated with a hair dryer.

    The connection of linoleum at home by hot welding is quite difficult to produce, especially if you do not have experience with this equipment. Therefore, we recommend that you entrust this process to specialists in order to avoid damage to the canvases.

    If you do decide to do it yourself, follow the instructions below:

    1. Prepare all the tools necessary for work in the form of:
    • special knife;
    • construction hair dryer;
    • harness.

    Treat the end areas on the linoleum with a knife. As a result, a grooved surface is obtained that reaches the main part of the linoleum.

    1. Remove debris and dust from the floor where the covering is located. Turn on the hair dryer and warm up the linoleum to 350-380 degrees. Install a special nozzle in which the harness will be installed.
    2. After installing the harness, heat the linoleum with a hairdryer, gradually reaching the joint line. The tourniquet should melt gradually and evenly.
    3. After completion of welding, remove unnecessary sections of the bundle; for this purpose, use a sickle-shaped knife or special equipment.
    4. Make sure the connections are neat, the knife is installed parallel to the floor to avoid damage.
    5. Hot welding of linoleum is divided into two stages. Work should start from opposite sides, and end at the overlap of the canvases.

    Do not forget, in addition to a hair dryer for welding, prepare a special attachment that improves the quality of the work performed and heats up only the necessary areas.

    Choose a high-quality hair dryer, the maximum heating temperature of which is 500-600 degrees. To maintain a constant temperature, the device has special sensors. In addition, pay attention to the number of modes of operation of the device.

    If the volume of work is large, then the welding will be long, the hair dryer, in this case, must have sufficient power to carry out this process, in order to avoid overheating.

    Before starting work, the strips of the coating are chamfered, thus a wedge-shaped depression is obtained. It is in it that the tourniquet will subsequently be located, which, when heated, will turn into a polymer liquid substance. A special nozzle for a hair dryer heats this particular area. The groove on the nozzle should be firmly pressed against the seam for the most uniform heating.     The production of linoleum has been constantly changing and improving, but one fact remains unchanged - this is the most popular roll coating. The material has high performance characteristics, is easy to install and unpretentious in matters of daily care.

    The main problem when laying is the connection of two or more canvases, when it is required to make a high-quality and inconspicuous joint. Let's figure out how to join linoleum together if the coating will fit into several canvases.

    Why join the panels together

    According to building codes, linoleum is laid on a flat supporting base made of concrete or wood. A wooden base is understood as a floor with a structure on logs, on which a flooring made of plywood, gypsum or fibreboard is fixed.

    Fastening or fixing of linoleum takes place on a special adhesive: acrylate, Bustilat, PVA, bitumen or rubber mastic. The use of glue allows you to reliably hold the material on the floor surface. As a result, during operation, the material does not slip, creeps less, does not bristle around the perimeter of the room.

    When laying material in two or more canvases, labor costs increase, since the canvases have to be joined. This is necessary in order for the floor covering to provide airtightness, which is of the highest priority when working with roll materials.

    That is, after laying, even in several rows, by gluing the seams, a solid and monolithic base is created in the form of a linoleum canvas. This avoids problems arising from the ingress of water and dirt under the coating. In addition, the overall penetration of noise in the room through the interfloor ceilings is reduced.

    When walking on the surface, there are no situations when residents cling to the edge of the canvas, which can lead to a person falling and injuries. The declared service life of linoleum is no different from the classical method of flooring with one sheet.

    Possible connection methods

    You can connect linoleum to each other using different methods: adhesives, welding cord, finishing elements. The choice of the method depends entirely on the type of linoleum and the place where the joint of the linoleum canvas will be located.

    To connect the seams to each other, located across the area of ​​the room, you can use the following methods:

    • cold welding - joining the web using special glue in tubes. The adhesive composition has different markings: "A", "C" and "T". For new household linoleum, type "A" glue-welding is used. It has a liquid consistency that quickly penetrates into the tight joint between the canvases;
    • hot welding - the gluing process takes place using a construction hair dryer and a special PVC cord. Under the action of temperatures above 300 C, the cord melts, filling the seam. After drying, a dense and reliable joint is formed in composition, similar to linoleum. This method is used to combine natural and commercial linoleum.

    The third method is used when the joint is located in the doorway. In this case, you can use a finishing sill, which is mounted on fasteners in the form of self-tapping screws or facing nails.

    The advantages of such a connection include its quick dismantling, if necessary, to carry out repairs and remove the old coating. And also the sill slightly hides the door gap between the floor and the lower part of the door, which noticeably improves the appearance of the door frame.

    It is highly discouraged to use such a connection in a hallway or rooms with high humidity, since the appearance of the element will quickly suffer due to increased loads.

    Adhesive technology

    To connect linoleum at the junction using glue-welding, you will need to purchase a suitable composition depending on the total length of the butt joint. To do this, you should roughly measure the length of the room and multiply by the number of joints that are supposed to be sealed.

    Cold welding is available in small tubes ranging from 40 to 60 ml. On average, 45-50 ml of cold welding is enough to join 18-22 running meters of linoleum sheet. In addition, for the docking, you will need to purchase masking tape and a sharp stationery or construction knife, rubber gloves.

    You can correctly dock linoleum with each other as follows:


    If, after removing the tape, small excess glue is visible, then it is better to play it safe and not cut it off right away. Wait until the mixture is completely polymerized and hardened. This will help to quickly remove hard streaks from the joint.

    When working with "C" welding, the seam does not need to be glued. The mixture has sufficient viscosity and a thicker consistency. During application, it will not flow as much as type A glue. The process of repairing an old joint is similar to the previous technology. The old seam will need to be thoroughly cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. It is advisable to remove the lagging pieces of the coating, if any.

    The mixture is applied over the entire width of the joint. It is important to remember that the maximum joint width should not exceed 2 mm, otherwise, after drying, the mixture will not be able to provide sufficient strength between the two sheets of coating.

    Hot-welded joints

    Joining canvases with each other by hot welding is a more reliable method, but is used only when laying marmoleum, natural or commercial type of linoleum.

    It is impossible to dock a household coating using this technology, since such linoleum is thinner and will not withstand temperatures of 300-400 C. Hot welding will simply melt the coating and damage its underlying base.

    The work, as in the previous case, is performed after gluing and cutting the joint through the overlap of one canvas on another. After you need to let the coating lie down. It is best to connect within 24-36 hours.

    Further work will consist of the following:

    1. The entire length of the seam is chamfered with a special cutter. It is better to use a cutter on rollers for more precise adjustment of the chamfer depth. After chamfering, it is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
    2. A welding machine or a hot air gun heats up within 2-3 minutes to the desired temperature (300 C). Next, a nozzle for feeding a PVC cord is put on the tip of the hair dryer.
    3. The cord must be threaded into the nozzle and leave a small margin of 1 cm. Then the tip of the hair dryer is applied to the beginning of the seam and is guided along the entire length. In the process of work, you need to lightly press down the cord.
    4. After cooling, the cord is cut flush with the coating. A special knife is used for trimming. The pruning process can be divided into two stages. First, cut off most of the cooled cord. Then we form an even joint with the second cut of the cutting blade.

    The decorative sill is available in various variations. We recommend purchasing a T-shaped metal product with a hidden installation method. Such a nut looks more presentable due to the hidden fastening system using a narrow strip located in the center of the product.

    The length of the threshold directly depends on the width of the doorway. If the coating was laid on a concrete floor, then a perforator will need to be prepared for the work. If the linoleum is laid on a wooden base, then a screwdriver is needed.

    First of all, you need to prepare a seam, the width of which is equal to the width of the lower sill element. Next, holes are drilled for plastic dowels. After the dowels are hammered into the holes, the sill is mounted and fixed with self-tapping screws. At the final stage, a middle element is inserted that hides the fasteners.
