Window plastic sill step by step installation. How to install a window sill on plastic windows

PVC windows have proven themselves well and are very popular, while their installation is mainly included in the cost of production, which cannot be said about the window sill plate. Therefore, we will consider how to properly install a plastic window sill yourself.

In fact, the selection of window sills is quite large. They are made of wood, natural or, as mentioned above, of plastic. So why is it worth giving preference to the latter option? Of course, you can buy any other, but it is PVC that will have the perfect combination of price policy and quality.

So, although wooden ones are considered environmentally friendly and natural, nevertheless, they have rather serious disadvantages, which led to a decrease in their popularity. For example, they are very picky about care, they are afraid of various chemicals and abrasive materials, and the paintwork must be renewed at least once every three years. In addition, they are afraid of high humidity, fire, and the highest quality products have a very high cost. As for the stone window sills, their price will also not be affordable for everyone. And the installation is quite complicated, so it's very difficult to do it on your own.

The modern type of PVC window sills is devoid of all these features. Let's consider in more detail all their advantages, and, of course, disadvantages. The former include ease of use. In principle, to return it to its original appearance, it is enough to simply wash it with clean water, but in the case of more serious contamination, plastic is not afraid of exposure to chemicals. In addition, the installation of plastic window sills is very simple.

It is also impossible not to note the excellent strength characteristics of these products, their resistance to moisture, temperature extremes, and fire. Do not worry about the fact that they may turn yellow under the influence of sunlight, this will not happen. Despite the fact that mainly white specimens are in demand, a PVC window sill of absolutely any color can be purchased on request. The only inconvenience is that you need to wait a little while this product arrives in your city. And, by the way, their price is significantly lower than that of analogues made of natural stone or expensive wood, while modern plastic is also considered environmentally friendly.

The disadvantage is the likelihood that after a few years various small cracks, creases and other defects may appear on the surface, however, with proper operation, such problems arise after many years. You can still hear the theory about the dangers of plastic, however, this is not confirmed by anything.

Before considering installation, it is worth making a choice, and for this you should know the entire range of such products. Products differ in the type of coating. The most common are PVC-foil-covered window slabs. They are not very good resistance to mechanical damage and thermal effects. In addition, over time, they lose their appearance, as they absorb dirt, dust and dyes, and therefore require careful maintenance. But their main advantage is their low price.

The next type of material is paper-laminated plastic, which has excellent characteristics. This CPL coating, obtained by pressing paper sheets impregnated with melamine resins, is resistant to various mechanical influences, high temperatures, humidity, and chemicals. Its only serious drawback is the impossibility of restoration.

But the option that has EPL coverage can rightfully be attributed to the premium class.... This product not only has excellent strength characteristics (the surface is almost impossible to scratch), but it even has antistatic properties, so that the dust will have to be wiped much less often than with its counterparts. Also, the window sill has a variety of design options, and it is also very pleasant to the touch. It will be velvety and warm even if the room is cool enough.

How to install a plastic window sill - we act

Having dealt with the types and features, you should pay attention to how to put the plastic window sill yourself.

How to install a plastic window sill - step by step diagram

Step 1: Measurements

In order for the work to go easily and quickly, and the PVC plate fits harmoniously into the seat, measurements should be taken correctly. First, we measure the depth of the window opening, or rather, its lower part, which will further decorate our window sill. To this value, add 12-17 cm, since the element itself should protrude by about 10 centimeters, and about 2 cm it will go under the window frame. We add 10 cm to the total length, so that in the future it goes under the side slopes of 50 mm on each side.

Step 2: surface preparation

This stage is practically no different from other preparatory work, so we take a brush, a vacuum cleaner in our hands and clean the surface of various debris, dirt, etc. Then we treat it with a primer and let it dry thoroughly. However, there are some individual moments, for example, you should check how tightly the window itself is inserted. In the case when there are gaps between the frame and the window opening, they should be immediately eliminated, otherwise heat loss in winter cannot be avoided.

Step 4: Direct installation

It's time to figure out how to fix a plastic window sill, and what we need for this. Basically, nothing special: wooden wedges or special pads that can be found in any hardware store, low expansion foam and a construction gun. First, we try on to adjust the height of the wedges. The fact is that a slight slope (no more than one centimeter) from the frame is needed, then condensation and moisture will not drain into the junction of the window and window sill, which could lead to fungus. We also check with a level that the plate does not have any differences in length.

Then, after installing the window sill and finally checking all the slopes, we blow out the space between it and the surface of the opening with foam. Why should it have a low expansion ratio? Yes, everything is very simple, otherwise she will simply lift the product... Next, we put a load on the surface, a weight of 15 kg will be quite enough, and we wait until everything is dry. Now you can admire the result, because the installation of the plastic window sill is complete with your own hands.

Modern trends require innovations in every area of life, including renovation. With the development of technologies, new materials and products appear that differ in much better performance. If earlier it was necessary to mount two window frames in order to provide heat and sound insulation, now it is enough to install a thin metal-plastic window that perfectly copes with the same functions, moreover, more efficiently. Instead of a heavy concrete window sill, PVC products are now used, which is important to be able to correctly install in order to achieve optimal performance in operation.

Peculiarities

Installation of a plastic window sill in an apartment or house can be done for various reasons. The simplest of them is the wear and tear of the old window and its complete replacement, including all its component parts. For a long time, metal-plastic windows have gained prestige and are very popular, since they are easy to install, and the service life and performance characteristics are very high.

Due to the fact that a modern window is a universal product, you can choose a wide variety of window sills that will meet the stylistic task of the room and provide comfort.

The most versatile option is considered to be a PVC window sill, which is ideally combined with the window itself, creating a single composition. In addition, the cost of such a product is much lower than that of more sophisticated options for the type of natural stone. In order to determine exactly which window sill is best placed in the room, you need to know the advantages and disadvantages of this window element.

Among the positive qualities are:

  • resistance to moisture and different temperatures - the PVC window sill does not change its shape and appearance;
  • no need for serious care of the product;
  • light weight of the window sill, in contrast to similar options;
  • does not need staining to refresh the appearance;
  • does not shrink like wooden products;
  • the ability to install this element of any size, shape and even colors, depending on the wishes of the owners.

If we talk about the negative aspects, then they should include:

  • Dullness of the product - if used carelessly, dents and even holes may appear on the windowsill.
  • If the top layer has a gloss, then it is prone to scratches, which will quickly degrade the appearance of the product.
  • Poor resistance to very high temperatures. You should not put hot pots and kettles on the PVC window sill, because this can deform the surface, ruining it forever.

There are quite a few options for materials from which you can make a window sill, but most often they choose those that look good and have the necessary characteristics. If we talk about PVC construction, then an important advantage is that it is inexpensive, while it does not need most of the additional work that is inherent in other materials: treatment against corrosion, decay, painting.

In addition, due to the excellent characteristics, these window sills comply with GOST, because they are not harmful to humans and have parameters that ensure the safety of residents.

Style and design

Since metal-plastic windows are often white, PVC window sills were originally made only in this version. With the growing popularity of these products, different color schemes for both windows and window sills began to appear. The most common variation of white is wood imitation, which is used in bedrooms or in children's rooms. In addition, this option allows you to install modern structures in a wooden house, which outwardly will not stand out, fitting into the concept of the structure.

For the production of this kind of products, laminated PVC films for wood are used. To impart the desired properties, impregnation with melamine resin is additionally carried out.

This way you can give the surface the look of any wood, be it oak, alder or cherry.

In addition, window sills with a natural stone finish, most often granite or marble, are also popular. Thanks to this solution, you can avoid buying an expensive and heavy product, but get an equally beautiful window design option. If you need to somehow decorate the room, which is especially often the case with a children's room, then you can resort to using color options for window sills.

They can have different textures and shapes, which are selected taking into account the wishes of the client.

If we talk about convenience, then for each type of house there are options of different lengths and widths so that you can use the space as correctly as possible. Brickwork differs in width from the walls of a panel house, therefore, different window sills are needed here. If we talk about original design solutions, then you can make a window sill-countertop, which will perform two functions at once, thereby making it possible to do without buying a table.

This option will look good in small kitchens or bedrooms where you need to place many functional areas in a small space.

The use of a glossy or matte finish, original shapes and sizes are all that the owner of a PVC window sill can get. Often, such options are made to order and they cost a little more, but the appearance of a room with such an accessory will be inimitable. Each owner decides for himself what to install in his home based on taste preferences and financial capabilities.

How to install?

Window sills are usually made in standard sizes to fit the most common window sills. But in view of the fact that frames can often have atypical characteristics, it is very often necessary to cut the product on the spot so that it fits as well as possible under the window. To approach the process correctly, the first step is to take all the necessary measurements, and only then cut off the excess.

It is best to mark up with a pencil or marker so that it can be clearly seen.

Required tools and accessories

Any repair process requires the correct selection of tools in order to ensure maximum efficiency, and the correct selection of components will make the process of using the product simple and not causing any problems and worries.

To install a PVC window sill, you need to have:

  • directly the product itself;
  • corner for determining the slope of the window sill;
  • level to check the evenness of the installation of the product;
  • marker with tape for marking;
  • silicone sealant for sealing joints and seams;
  • polyurethane foam to eliminate cavities between the window sill and the wall of the house itself;
  • jigsaw for cutting off unnecessary parts;
  • a perforator to dismantle the old structure and provide the right conditions for the new one;
  • screwdriver for attaching the window sill;
  • screws with self-tapping screws;
  • cement mortar for leveling the surface under the new window sill and sealing the installation sites of the structure;
  • a utility knife and clean rags to give the window structure a complete look.

In addition to the basic tools and materials, one should also not forget about the additional ones, which include the slopes, thanks to which the window is transformed, creating a completely different perception of the room.

The overlay on the window sill, which is worn on both sides of the product, is necessary in order to beautifully frame it and close the cavities into which dust or moisture can get, from where it will not be easy to remove it. It usually looks like a straight strip with protrusions at the ends.

During installation, it must be cut in half, and then the required amount should be measured so that it ideally "sits" on the new window sill.

Several tools can be used to cut a window sill:

  • Hacksaw for metal can be found at any owner of the house. The process of cutting it will be long and will require considerable physical strength.
  • Jigsaw, which is best suited for such work, as it cuts off excess parts quickly and without much difficulty. For the best result, it is important to set the swing of the pendulum to zero, and for work, choose a file for metal with small teeth.
  • Bulgarian helps to trim unnecessary parts very quickly and accurately, but at the same time it is very noisy and dusty in operation.
  • Cordless saws are cordless instruments. It is easy and convenient to work with such equipment, but their disadvantage is the high cost of the tool.

When all the tools are ready, you can start work, in which it is important to adhere to all the recommendations, otherwise the product may skew and the appearance of the window will be greatly affected by this.

It is important to remember that the places that need to be foamed must dry out for some time in order not to change their characteristics.

Preparatory work

In order to make the installation of a new PVC window sill, the first step is to dismantle the old structure. Depending on what material it was made of, and certain work will be carried out. It is best to remove old parts carefully so as not to damage the masonry and do not have to restore it. If the dismantling did not work out effectively, then additional procedures will be needed.

First of all, the surface where the window sill will be installed is cleaned of debris and unnecessary parts. Next, you need to calculate what dimensions the new window element has and whether you need to change the dimensions of the opening. If both designs had approximately the same performance, then the process will proceed faster. If there is an obvious difference, then work is required to adjust the size of the window opening for the installation of a new PVC product.

If the window sill is thinner than the previous one, then the difference is eliminated with the help of cement mortar, if it is thicker, then the excess part can be removed using a perforator, after which a concrete screed will have to be made.

When calculating the height of the base for installing a new element, it is important to take into account the gap for the foam, on which the product will be attached. It should be at least 2 cm. If necessary, additional work is carried out to adjust the grooves in the side slopes. In order for the window to not let the cold through, it is important to exclude any possibility for this, which is why the junction of the frame with the window sill is coated with silicone sealant, after which the installation itself takes place.

When calculating the width of the window sill, it is important to decide exactly where it will begin and end. You can make it the width of the window or leave a margin of a few centimeters so that the edges on each side go into the wall. Typically, these gaps are four to six centimeters long.

In the slopes, you initially need to make cuts into which the new PVC window sill will be inserted.

Subtleties of installation

In order to install a new PVC window sill with your own hands, you need to correctly install the structure. The installation process of such parts can be carried out using:

  • polyurethane foam and special glue, which are used to fix the window sill;
  • fixation brackets;
  • profile for installing PVC products.

The easiest and most convenient option for installation will be the option with foam. The first step is to prepare wooden wedges that will serve as a support for the new window sill. They are placed over the entire surface of the prepared base. It is important to check the flatness of the installation using a level and note the slope of the product. It is necessary that the bevel is directed into the room in order to give direction to the condensate not towards the stove, but into the room.

If there are any inconsistencies in these indicators, then wooden wedges can be increased, or, conversely, reduced, depending on the situation.

All work is carried out in stages to avoid installation errors and unsatisfactory results. As soon as the wedges are of suitable dimensions, the free space between the sill and the base is covered with foam. So that the angle of inclination does not change, it is important to install a weight on the windowsill, which will give the necessary resistance, so the foam will solidify correctly. For complete solidification, at least two or even three days should pass, after which you can remove the weight and use the window sill.

The process of installing a window and a window sill goes step by step, and it is important to take into account all the stages in order to get a decent result in the end. This process is inextricably linked with the decoration of the walls, therefore, when planning the installation option, you need to think in advance about how further work will be carried out.

  • If you plan to put the window sill before finishing with sandwich panels or drywall, then you do not need to groove at the bottom. By increasing the thickness, the board will be pressed with the finishing material.
  • If the slopes are lined with varnish or paint on putty, then in this case it is imperative to gouge the surface.

If it is planned to use massive elements in the form of wooden panels, lining, cork, Venetian plaster for finishing the window, then it is important to take into account the protrusion of the slab, taking into account the thickness of the coating. Otherwise, it will be recessed inside the opening, which will not look aesthetically pleasing.

Thus, replacing a window requires that the old concrete sill is also dismantled and replaced with a new one. For the convenience of further work, it is advisable to remove the old structure without much damage to the masonry.

You can replace a heavy and outdated window sill with the help of a modern PVC product, which is not only lightweight and strong enough, but also has a varied appearance that can be matched to the style of the room, which is very convenient.

The work process is reduced to the following stages:

  • Installing a new product, putting it into the grooves prepared in advance.
  • Aligning the window sill with the window using wooden wedges.
  • The fixing process, when the window sill can be fixed, can be done using polyurethane foam, which will provide excellent performance for many years.
  • The use of stubs, which can be of different shapes. Depending on the design features of the window sill, they can be without ears, if the thickness of the product is quite large and there is a desire to make it look like a stone monolith, or with ears with a minimum thickness and a simple version of the window element.

To change the window sill quickly and correctly, it is important to complete all the stages, which include dismantling old structures, installing new ones and finishing work. This is important, because incorrect dismantling of an old product will add unnecessary work, inaccuracies in installing a new one will lead to operational problems, and improper finishing work will affect the final appearance.

To remove the foam that remains after installation, you must first cut it off with a clerical knife, and then apply a layer of tile glue, which must be putty after drying. Only after that the surface can be painted or pasted over with wallpaper.

Dimensions (edit)

To make a quality repair, you need to select the right materials for it. When replacing windows and sill, it is worth choosing the right size for the latter. The standard width for it will be the dimensions:

  • 50-60 cm if the installation will be carried out in a brick house;
  • 20-25 cm for panel houses.

The widest window sill that can be found on the free sale is 80 cm, and the narrowest is 20 cm. If we talk about length indicators, then it can be from 1.5 meters to 6.

All unnecessary parts are removed during the installation process so that the resulting window has an aesthetic appearance.

If we talk about atypical windows, for example, small structures in a bathroom or other room, then in this case there is no need to use a large window sill, the best solution would be a width of 10 cm.Almost all standard products are 2 cm thick, which is sufficient for moderate loads and full use of the window element. There are also thinner products, where the thickness is 1.8 cm, which implies lighter loads on the surface.

If the window sill is planned to be used as a table, then its width should be sufficient for this, therefore, products with widths from 60 cm to one meter are produced. You can use this option in almost any room where you need to minimize the amount of furniture and increase functionality.

Colors

In view of the emergence of new materials for the manufacture of window sills, there are also color options for such products. The simplest of them is the use of various colors and shades, which can either be transmitted to the window itself or go separately as a decorative element of the room.

Often such accents are made in the kitchen, bedroom, nursery, where it is possible to add colors to the interior.

For a more sophisticated appearance, you can use window sills with imitation of natural stone, marble and granite, or wood, which looks especially beautiful in wooden buildings. The variety of options for window sills can include not only color, but also texture, which is glossy and matte.

For an original style and giving the interior an expensive appearance, it is better to use gloss, and in a quieter room, a matte version will look great.

Window repair is always accompanied by nuances that it is desirable to know and skillfully use.

  • If you need to use a hammer drill, it is important to protect your face and hands with glasses and gloves so that nothing gets on them.
  • When working on the base for a new PVC product, you need to clearly know its dimensions so as not to knock off the excess part of the wall, but also not to make the hole smaller than necessary.
  • The gap that forms between the window sill and the surface on which it lies must be sealed with foam. For this material to set better, it is important to wet the surface before use.
  • When choosing the width of the product, it is important to know that its protrusion beyond the slope should not exceed 6 centimeters. If this is neglected, then the circulation of air masses can be disrupted and the windows will fog up a lot.
  • When repairing a balcony and replacing windows with access to it, the thickness of a standard window sill will be 20 cm, but if there are suitable dimensions, even one-meter-long products can be used. You can also fix the product on the balcony with foam or glue, depending on the situation.

Successful examples and options

  • You can install windows both in a wooden house and in a brick one, and depending on this, you can choose the color of the entire structure, and the design features of certain parts.
  • The use of a wooden window sill in combination with a frame in the same color blends harmoniously with the whole house, which is finished with modern wood-effect materials.

You may well purchase a window sill separately from a plastic window, because it may break, for example, or you first wanted to leave the old wooden window sill, but then changed your mind. We will tell you how to install a plastic window sill with your own hands.

Choosing the right one

If you opted for a PVC window sill, most likely all the positive and negative aspects of it were appreciated. The advantages are:

  • Durability. The plastic itself has a very long service life. It is unaffected by water or other corrosive non-corrosive liquids.
  • Relative ease of installation. Compared to products made from other materials, there is less risk of doing something wrong during installation.
  • Acceptable cost. Wooden window sills, made of artificial or natural stone, have a cost that is much higher.
  • Low weight.
  • Ease of processing.
  • Additional thermal insulation.
  • Easy to clean. Almost any non-abrasive detergent is suitable.

Here are some of the cons:

  • High temperature instability (in most cases).
  • Inability to recover from damage. If wooden, for example, can be putty, cleaned and painted, then such a number will not work here.
  • If the surface of the product is rough, dirt builds up there over time, which is not so easy to wash.

Window sills can be purchased with or after the installed windows. Their installation is carried out both on the balcony and in a wooden house. In this case, it is worth paying attention to:

Tool

In order for the installation to go like clockwork, we need the following tools:

  • hammer;
  • roulette;
  • level or laser level;
  • building corner;
  • polyurethane foam and a gun;
  • Bulgarian;
  • chisel;
  • plastic or other material linings;
  • acrylic or silicone sealant;
  • side plugs.

The foam can be of varying degrees of expansion. You should choose it according to your needs. But it is better not to take the one that will not expand at all, because it will not be able to compensate for some gaps, and they may remain after installation.

This step can take most of the time, but it is actually the most important step in the entire process.

See how the window is installed. It is important to assess if there are any deviations from the horizontal plane. To do this, apply a level or start a projection from a laser level along the lower edge of the frame. In the future, the window sill will be exposed exactly on it, which can also lead to distortion. If there are small deviations, then this is not scary, further it will be described how they can be compensated.

We measure the width of the window opening. It is important to remember that the plane of the stand should be recessed into the slopes by 1 cm from each end, and the protruding part on the sides should extend beyond the opening by 3 cm or more.

We make grooves in the slopes where the ends of the window sill will go. The edge of the frame will serve as a guide in this regard. Pay attention to the edge of the stand on which the window sits, namely the bottom edge of the frame.

In order to do everything right, you can use several methods. Using a laser plane builder, a horizontal line is projected onto the opening. From this line along the window, a measurement is made to the edge, the value is fixed. Further from the same line, the same distance is laid, but already on the slope. If there is no level, then you can use a water or ordinary level, which is placed close to the bottom line of the frame, aligned horizontally on the bubble indicator and a mark is made.

A straight line is drawn that will connect our mark and the edge of the frame.

Most likely, there is a metal corner at the corners of the slopes. In no case should you try to knock it down with a chisel and a hammer, so you can damage it completely. For this, it is better to use a grinder. Two small transverse cuts are simply made across its width. An incision is also made along the marked line.

With the help of a chisel or other suitable tool and a hammer, indentations of 1.5‒2 cm are knocked out.

Next, you need to evaluate the surface on which the installation will be carried out. Attention should be paid not only to how uneven it is, but also to how far from it to the bottom of the window. Ideally, it should not exceed 4 cm. This is due to the fact that it is with this thickness that the foam polymerizes in the best way, which makes it quite dense and durable. If the layer size is large, then voids may form inside, which reduces the bearing capacity, and can also cause drafts.

In the event that the size exceeds 4 cm, it is necessary to reduce the gap. This can be done with the help of available tools. For example, you can build a small formwork from the rule and pour the solution. In this case, it will be easier to deduce the required level. If the installation is carried out at a time when there are still remnants of a brick or foam block from the partitions inside the room, then the base can be laid out of them, and all the cracks can be sealed with mortar or glue. After that, you need to give at least a day for everything to stand and grab.

In the event that the level of the base will rise with the help of a foam block, it must be soaked in water for a short time. Due to its porosity, it absorbs moisture well, and if it takes too much of it from the mortar on which it will be placed, there will be no seizure. Wetting saturates the foam block with moisture, so the setting will be the best possible.

Installation work

The first step is cleaning. It is better to produce it with a construction vacuum cleaner, since brushes and brushes are not able to remove all dust.

Moisture is required for good adhesion of foam to other materials. Therefore, it is recommended to moisten the surface with water. But you can go further and kill two birds with one stone. You do not need to use water, but a primer. In this way it will be possible to remove the remaining dust, as well as provide the necessary moisture. It can be applied with a brush, but it is more convenient to do it with a hand spray. If you use the latter, then cover the windows with something or wipe them down immediately. If you let the impregnation dry, then then it will have to be removed with consequences.

The marking of the window sill is being carried out. Its total width will be the width of the opening plus 10 cm (this overlap is necessary to provide 5 cm for each "ear"). The depth will be equal to the distance from the window stand to the middle of the heater if it is under the window. Better not to cover it completely. If you do this, then warm air will not flow to the glass, and they will fog up, which will lead to the accumulation of condensation and the growth of mold and mildew. If there is no battery and radiator, then the overhang can be carried out by 5 cm. In some cases, at the request of the customer, an even larger protrusion is made. Perhaps the space will be used as an extension of the desktop or something else. In this case, it is necessary to install metal corners as props. Their base is embedded in the plaster. The length of the window sill is adjusted taking into account the fact that the edges will be recessed by 1 cm into the wall.

Using a hacksaw for metal or an electric jigsaw, trimming is carried out.

Next, you need to prepare the props on which the plane will lie. Special plastic plates are often used, but they may not give the required rigidity. Instead, you can use parts of a trimmed window sill. It is worth placing them every 40‒50 cm. They are exposed using a building level or using a level (when using the latter, a line is projected and measurements are taken from it at two ends to the supports, the distance should be the same). Their height should be such that the window sill goes right next to the bottom of the frame and rests on the mounting bar. In order not to move them in the process, you can fix them with self-tapping screws. If the platform is from a gas block, then you can simply screw it through with self-tapping screws, in the case of a brick, you will have to use a puncher and dowels.

You can go the other way and install the props not across, but along the windowsill. They can be made from plaster beacons. In this case, there will be a greater emphasis, which will definitely exclude deflections and creases.

With the help of a gun and polyurethane foam, the cracks, which may be under the window, are sealed. You need to be especially careful about the corners. There are times that everything is installed beautifully, and a draft blows from below, which is an indicator of carelessness.

Plugs are mounted on the window sill, and it is tried on in its place. If there are no gaps between it and the window, then you can continue the installation. In the case when the gap is large enough, it is necessary to raise the props; at its minimum values, it can be expected that the foam will compensate for the gap. Until the repair is completely completed, you do not need to remove the film, it will be enough to lift it in those places that will hide in the wall and under the window.

If the props were installed lengthwise, then the main layer of foam must be applied before the window sill is installed in its place. If across, then blowing can be done in several stages. Before installation - the part that is closer to the window. Then walk along the middle line, and then along the edge.

For a day, the plane must be pressed down with a load. To do this, you can use books, egg bottles with water, dumbbells (but it is advisable to make a lining of durable material under them), etc.

After polymerization and drying of the foam, its excess is cut off. Moreover, under the windowsill, it must be cut flush by about 1 cm so that you can safely putty this space and the applied material has a sufficient layer.

If there is a bias

The solution will be a little installation trick. Most often, this remains invisible to others, especially if the width of the product is more than 25 cm. For this we need self-tapping screws or some other material with which it will be possible to make adjustable beacons. They are mounted in two lines. The first one should be almost close to the window, and its level should exactly repeat the slope of the window. The second is installed closer to the edge. It needs to be aligned exactly to the level using a special tool. After installation, the far part of the window sill will fit snugly against the window frame, and the near one will be exactly level. This will deceive the eyes and create the visual effect of correct positioning.

The installation of the window sill can be combined with the installation of plastic overlays on the corners near the window. Never rush through the process, especially when laying out. We are interested to know what nuances you have noticed personally for yourself. Share your observations in the comments.

Video

Watch a video tutorial from a professional on installing a PVC window sill. All the nuances are clear:

Usually, the sills are fixed in place by professionals, the same team that installs, but this work can be done independently. This occupation is quite within the power of the owner of the house, who has a grinder, a jigsaw, several simple construction tools and knows how to use polyurethane foam.

How to install a plastic window sill?

  1. Determine the length of the future window sill. This size is made up of several values. It is necessary to add up the width of the window opening and the size of the allowances on both sides, which usually range from 10 cm to 30 cm, depending on the wishes of the customer.
  2. Using a corner, draw a line on the slopes to determine which part of the wall to remove.
  3. We make a cut with a grinder, cutting the corner, if any, and then remove the excess brick and concrete with a chisel or perforator.

  6. To level the plane, we will have to use substrates made of plastic, drywall, wood or other material and a level. It is possible to mount the window sill not strictly horizontally, but with a slight slope of up to 1 cm from the window, so that condensation or spilled water flows out.
  7. With one edge we start the window sill into the groove, shift it to the right and gradually put it in place.
  8. The product stands completely in the groove of the window frame.

Nowadays, plastic products are gaining more and more popularity. This material is quite practical and reliable, besides, it is not expensive. If you decide to change wooden windows to plastic ones, and do not want to overpay for the installation of the window sill, or you just want to install the window sill with your own hands, then this article is for you.

The preparatory stage includes measurements of the future structure, as well as all materials and tools, as well as preparation of the window opening for the installation of a new window sill.

Before buying, you need to make several measurements, namely:

  • Window sill width. It is equal to the width of the window opening plus 10-15 centimeters.
  • Sill length. Measured as the length of the window opening plus 10-15 centimeters.

It should be borne in mind that too large and wide a window sill can significantly impair air circulation, therefore, water droplets will accumulate on the windows and their service life will be reduced.

From tools, you should prepare or purchase:

  • Jigsaw or grinder.
  • Level.
  • Hammer.
  • Corner ruler.
  • Masking tape.

Materials you need:

  • Construction foam.
  • Sealant.
  • End caps.
  • Suitable size PVC panel.
  • Plastic underlays.

Surface preparation for installing a window sill

First, you need to remove the old structure. This is done with a jigsaw or a hacksaw. Next, you need to remove the cement screed around the edges.

Clear the space of debris, loose material, insulation and everything else. This will ensure that the new window sill is securely attached. It is best to vacuum the base under the window sill, so you are guaranteed to reliably clean the base.

If you are planning to install a window sill with side ledges, then you should create small openings so that the panel can be inserted easily. First, the walls are cut, then the opening of the required size is knocked out with a hammer. The openings must be the same on both sides and such that the PVC panel is easy to insert.

After cleaning the base under the windowsill, it should be well primed to ensure the adhesion of the mortar for leveling the base.

If you only plan to replace the window sill and the windows remain old, then the width and height will be the same as the width and height of the old wooden window sill. You just need to remove it and transfer the measurements to the PVC panel. If the windows are planned to be changed or new windows have already been installed, then the size of the window sill is calculated again. It is important that the window sill is installed only after the installation of new windows has been completed. When making accurate measurements before cutting, it is important to take into account that the window sill should go under the window frame by 10-15 centimeters, and the protrusions on the sides should not exceed 5 centimeters. The window sill should be tilted so that the absolute height under the window frame and the height at the periphery differ by 2-3 millimeters.

Do-it-yourself PVC window sill installation involves cutting the material. PVC cutting can be ordered at a hardware store, or you can do it yourself using a jigsaw.

Once you have the PVC panel cut out, follow the instructions:

  • Cut slabs for backings. They can be both plastic and wooden. Their width should not be less than 5 centimeters, and the length should be the same as the width of the base, excluding the window frame. The thickness of the substrate is selected based on the height of the window opening and the width of the PVC panel. It should be noted that the PVC panel must fit freely between the window frame and the underlays.
  • The optimal number of substrates is 2-3 pieces per meter of length. Before installing them, the base must be properly leveled.
  • The base is leveled with cement mortar or alabaster mortar. This is done so that the window sill does not have significant irregularities and maintains the integrity of the structure.
  • After the base is leveled, it is checked with a level.
  • Supports are installed every 40-50 centimeters. After that, they are checked with a level in two directions. The supports can be tilted away from the window, but the tilt angle should not exceed 0.5-1 degrees.
  • To check the correctness of the installation of the supports, a control installation of the panel is made. If she enters well and lies flat, then the work continues.
  • Before proceeding with securing the window sill frame, you must first clean the window frames from the protective film and install the plugs on the ends.
  • The supports are securely fixed, and only after that, the plastic panel can be installed. In order for it to fit as best as possible to the base, it is tapped on it with a hammer. After that, control measurements are made again with the level in two directions. If the panel lies flat, then the work continues, but if not, the panel is removed and the supports are leveled.
  • Small gaps should be left to the left and right to prevent deformation of the panel. At the end of the work, they are sealed with a sealant. The gaps should be no more than 5 millimeters. This is to ensure that the foam does not deform the windowsill.
  • All cracks and voids are filled with foam. Some experienced experts advise filling the voids between the supports not with foam, but with some kind of solution, for example, gypsum or cement. In this case, the support will be securely fixed.
  • If you are afraid that the window sill may deform under the influence of foam, then leave a few weights on it for a couple of days. Although, this should not happen if you left small gaps on the left and right.
  • After the foam is completely dry, the excess should be removed with a knife, all remaining gaps should be filled with sealant, the joints of the window sill with the wall should be aligned and putty. Thus, you will give your windowsill a cleaner look.

In order to better understand the sequence of work, we suggest you watch the installation of plastic window sills with your own hands video.

Unlike plastic, wood gives the interior a touch of luxury and home comfort. But, at the same time, wood is a heavier and more capricious material.

The preparation process is no different from the preparation process for a plastic window sill.

The plane is cleaned and primed, leveled and supported. The only difference is that the wooden window sill also needs a metal frame.

Wood is a pretty heavy material. Small blocks of aerated concrete or wooden blocks can serve as an excellent support for it. It is best if the gaps between these blocks are minimal. All cracks should be pre-filled with a solution of cement or gypsum.

So that the window sill does not hang in the air and is securely attached to the surface, screws are screwed onto the base from above with a distance of 30-40 centimeters. The screw caps should be as visible as necessary so that the window sill fits snugly against the base of the window frame and does not hang in the air. So that the caps of the screws do not fall inside, they are coated with plaster or cement around. Then, construction foam is applied to the plane. Particular attention is paid to the surface under the window, the rest of the space is filled with foam evenly.

After all the work done, a wooden window sill panel is placed on top, blown out with foam at the seams. After a few days, the foam is cut off, the cracks are filled with sealant.

Do-it-yourself installation of a window sill on a plastic window requires certain knowledge, therefore, carefully re-read the instructions and watch the training video before starting.

Installation of a window sill involves such basic types of work as: surface preparation, leveling, fastening the base, fastening the window sill, sealing the structure.
