Reactive furnace from a gas cylinder. How to make an efficient stove from an old gas cylinder

A good and reliable brazier can be made with your own hands even from the most unusual household items, and one of them is a simple gas cylinder. He can not only become an indispensable assistant in your country house, but also save you a lot of money on purchasing an expensive barbecue of the same parameters in the store. And if you try hard and turn on your imagination, then it will become an adornment of your personal plot.

Features of a grill made on the basis of a gas cylinder: advantages and disadvantages

Today, barbecues from gas cylinders are very popular and this is quite understandable. Such devices are large enough and capacious, so you can immediately install a large number of skewers for a large company. Their legs are much higher than those of standard store products, and this allows a person to stand upright, without bending while cooking kebabs. Also, if desired, from a cylinder using welding, fittings and metal, you can create various interesting shapes that fit the exterior of your home.

Advantages of a barbecue from a cylinder:

  • Ease of manufacture. Even a non-professional can easily make such a structure in a few hours with detailed instructions and a visual image.
  • The cheapness of the design. If there is a used or unsuitable gas cylinder at the dacha, then the base of the barbecue will be free for you. The most that you have to spend money on is additional structural elements.
  • Thanks to the thick walls of the cylinder, such a grill can withstand even the highest temperatures and high pressure, due to which its service life is significantly increased.
  • With a hinged lid, the grill can be left outside without fear of precipitation. Also, a lid is needed so that you can use it as a home smokehouse.
  • Functionality. If necessary, with the help of additional elements, you can improve the design.
  • Mobility. The brazier can be moved from one place to another or transported by car.
  • Ease of use. Since the bottom of such a barbecue does not burn out due to the thick walls, then after cooking kebabs or other dishes, the coals do not need to be poured with water. You can just close the lid and that's it.

Disadvantages of a barbecue:

  • Too large-sized structure, which may not fit into the overall interior of the yard.
  • Such a grill is quite heavy, so one person will not be able to transfer it without assistance.
  • Only coal can be used as a raw material, since there is very little space for logs in it, or you have to wait until the wood is completely burned out, and then it will be possible to lay the skewers.

Preparation for production: drawings and optimal dimensions

Before starting work on the manufacture of the barbecue, it is necessary to completely release all the gas that always remains in the cylinder even when it is completely "empty".

Since there may be condensate inside the cylinder, you first need to open the valve and release the gas to the end. This should be done only outdoors (outdoors) away from potential sources of fire and other factors that can cause sparks and ignition of gas residues. In order to make sure that the gas comes out, you can use a soapy solution, which must be impregnated with the outlet on the valve. If the soapy water bubbles a lot, it means that the gas is escaping.

After you see that the bottle is empty, you need to turn it over and pour out all the condensate, and then pour water into it to the brim and leave it for two or three days to remove the smell of gas. To fill in water, a regular garden hose is connected to the cylinder, and water enters it under high pressure. Further, it will be safe to work with the workpiece.

The first stage of work consists in creating a drawing of the future barbecue, which will indicate all dimensions, elements and design features.

Cylinder dimensions:

  • Height - 98 cm.
  • Diameter - 30 cm.
  • Wall thickness - 0.3 cm.
  • Weight - 22 kg.
  1. Since the diameter of the balloon is 96 cm, it can be easily divided into 4 parts, starting from the longitudinal seam, to ensure uniformity.

    We mark the balloon with chalk

  2. It is necessary to retreat from the seam by 24 cm and mark two lines. Then lay the can horizontally, and make marks for the skewers.
  3. From the transverse circular seams (lower and upper), it is necessary to retreat approximately 3 cm and mark the cutting line.

    Gas cylinder markings for cover device

  4. Then, from the first and second lines, it is necessary to mark 10 cm each so that you can then attach the legs exactly parallel to each other.
  5. The borders of the lid will be our first two marked lines from the longitudinal seam (24 cm each).

    Cutting lines for the lid of the future barbecue

  6. If metal rings are welded inside the cylinder, then it is necessary to make a cut so as not to damage them, since in the future they will serve as a support for the lid.

Choosing a gas cylinder

In order for the grill to turn out good, you need to find a suitable cylinder. If at your dacha or in a country house there used to be a gas stove that worked from such a cylinder, then you probably have a few left. You can look for a cylinder at the scrap metal collection points, where they will sell it to you at the price of scrap, or dig around the world wide web.

Usually they use a large cylinder with a volume of 50 liters. The main thing is that it is not rusty and does not have large holes in the case.

Tools required for the job

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare all the necessary tools and additional elements so as not to be distracted at the most crucial moment in search of, for example, a hammer, chisel or drill. To work, we need a set of such tools:

  • Welding machine;
  • Angle grinder (grinder);
  • Protective glasses;
  • Gloves;
  • Metal door hinges (3 or 4 pieces);
  • Rivets (one set) and rivet gun;
  • Hammer;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Chisel;
  • Adjustable wrench;
  • Drill and drill for metal with a diameter of 10–12 mm;
  • Metal chimney pipe;
  • Tubes or long iron legs for legs (you can use ready-made mechanisms from old leg sewing machines);
  • Four squares for foot pads - approximately 10x10 cm.

DIY step-by-step instructions for making

  1. Sawing. This is the most crucial stage, since the appearance of the future barbecue and its operational characteristics depend on its quality. With the help of a grinder, it is necessary to make cuts strictly along the outlined lines. First, unscrew the valve completely with an adjustable wrench or cut it off with a grinder, pouring water to prevent accidental ignition of gas residues from a spark.
  2. Welding cap and handles. The lid is best fixed with hinges, which are first fixed with rivets, and then welded to the lid and base of the barbecue. If the hinges are not welded, then in the future, under the influence of high temperatures, they will simply bounce off and the lid will fall off. On the sides, to move the product, you can weld handles from the fittings, pre-bent with a blowtorch or welding. If desired, ready-made metal handles can be purchased at the store and then simply bolted into specially drilled holes. Whom it will be convenient.
  3. Welding the legs. Saw pipes or corners into four pieces 50–70 cm long and weld them to the marked lines at the bottom of the cylinder at the same distance from each other so that they form a regular rectangle. We also recommend welding square metal plates to the ends of the legs, which will not allow the legs to go deep into soft soil under the own weight of a heavy barbecue. You can simply use two metal profiles, which are also welded at the bottom in parallel to two legs at once.
  4. The second version of the legs. Two strips 0.2 cm wide and 0.4 cm long must be cut out of a sheet of metal. Then we bend these "ribbons" in the form of an arc along the diameter of the cylinder and weld the legs to their ends. At the bottom, to each pair of legs, we weld a transverse bar from a profile to create rigidity and strength of the structure.
  5. We weld the corner between the two posts (the length should be no more than the cylinder).
  6. If you use a construction from a sewing machine as legs, then here you can even install two wheels on it so that the brazier can simply be rolled around the yard.
  7. In order for the walls of the cylinder not to deform under the influence of high temperatures, it is necessary to weld two corners with walls 30x30 mm inside it along the entire length. It will also give additional rigidity and reliability to the structure.
  8. Since the combustion process requires a constant supply of oxygen, approximately ten or fifteen large holes with a diameter of up to 16 mm must be drilled in the back of the product. They can be done in one row or staggered. In parallel, we make cuts with a grinder for installing skewers.
  9. At the end of the cylinder, where the valve used to be, there is a round hole in which we install the chimney pipe. To do this, you can use a regular downpipe.
  10. At the bottom of the barbecue, we lay several grates made of cast iron of a suitable size, which are usually used in stoves - stoves or boilers for air supply. This will help create an additional ventilation system while burning coals, and red-hot grates will help the cooking process even without adding coals.

How to make with a smokehouse

If you try hard and put in some effort, then your grill can turn into a home smokehouse. The main condition for any smokehouse is complete tightness.

It is made in the same way as a brazier, but only a firebox is added to it, which is made from an iron sheet or a small gas cylinder. To do this, part of the bottom of the barbecue is cut down and the firebox is welded to it.

The chimney is the main element of the smokehouse. You can make it yourself or buy a special pipe in the store.

It will be possible to start the smoking process after you have completely ignited the brazier and the firebox with wood, so that the smell of methane gas completely disappears and does not soak the meat or fish during smoking.

Choosing the type of paint

To paint a barbecue from a balloon, it is best to use heat-resistant paints, since the maximum temperature in it can reach more than 700 degrees. To do this, you must carefully read the instructions.

Paints must protect the metal from rust, as well as from temperature extremes when water gets on its hot surface.

When heated, the paint should not emit substances harmful to the human body and not enter into a chemical reaction with other substances.

Painting stages

  1. Before starting painting, the surface of the cylinder should be cleaned of old paint using a drill and a special metal nozzle or sandpaper.
  2. Then degrease the entire surface with alcohol, acetone or solvent.
  3. Before application, the paint must be mixed well until a homogeneous consistency is obtained and possible deposits and clots are removed. If the paint is too thick, thin it with a little thinner.
  4. The paint can be applied with a brush or roller in several layers, until a beautiful and smooth surface is obtained. Each layer should dry from half an hour to two hours, depending on the type of paint.

When painting a barbecue outside, the air temperature should not be below 20 degrees and above 40, since at subzero temperatures the paint will begin to freeze, and if too high, it will dry instantly.

Acrylic heat-resistant paints are the most popular today and they are produced in aerosol cans. Due to their unique composition, they are considered the safest, fastest-drying, most effective and durable products. They also have anti-corrosion properties.

The nuances of using the resulting product

  • Even if the surface of the grill is covered with anti-corrosion paints, we do not recommend subjecting it to additional tests and leaving it outdoors in the open air. It is best to put it under a canopy in summer and spring, and in autumn and winter to put it in a garage or in an outbuilding.
  • If, after you have done all the necessary measures to eliminate the smell from the cylinder, it still remains, then you just need to fire the inside of the barbecue several times and the smell will disappear forever.
  • To avoid sparking from the frypot and causing a fire, operate the product at a safe distance from flammable objects. Also, after the end of the cooking process, you should not pour out the ash, as it can smolder for about two more days and cause a fire.
  • If necessary, the grill can be used as a barbecue, if you install an ordinary metal grill from the refrigerator.
  • The brazier cover not only protects the inner surface of the product from atmospheric precipitation, but is also the main part when turning the brazier into a smokehouse.

The brazier, which is made from a gas cylinder, can also serve as a smokehouse and barbecue. If meat is simply fried on an ordinary standard brazier, then in this case it is also baked due to the special design of the product. Even when using a small amount of coals, the walls of the barbecue will warm up well and the meat will be completely fried.

A brazier from a cylinder will serve you for many years, provided it is used correctly and with proper care. This is an excellent multifunctional design that allows you not only to grill kebabs, but also to make excellent homemade smoked meats. And if you approached the manufacture of such a product seriously and thoroughly, then in the future the brazier will delight you and your family with “its” barbecue and smoked delicacies.

To heat a summer cottage, a garage, it is quite possible to make a stove from an ordinary gas cylinder.

The advantages of a gas cylinder as a material of manufacture are as follows:

  • optimal shape for high efficiency;
  • high-quality and durable material designed for high pressure and temperature;
  • low price.

The most suitable shape for a stove is a sphere. This shaped chamber is easy to clean and the uniform heat distribution improves the efficiency of the entire device. Taking into account that there should be at least two opposite holes in the fuel chamber: for filling fuel and removing heat, the optimal shape of the firebox in the form of a sphere is somewhat stretched and turns into a cylinder with rounded ends.

This is the shape that an ordinary gas cylinder, widely used in everyday life, has. Due to the fact that waste products are made of durable and high-quality steel, they are often used on the farm as a basis for a variety of devices and devices. They are used to make homemade barbecues, smokehouses, hand rollers, feeders and drinkers for livestock, and even homemade compressors and boilers.

Homemade gas cylinder fireboxes are also on this list of examples of the appearance of a "second life" in a consumed product. The cylinder may end up on the farm after its use for its intended purpose, or you can purchase an empty container, the price for them is quite democratic.

Varieties of ovens

The types of stoves that can be made from an empty gas cylinder are determined by its shape. Thus, the cylinder is suitable as a housing for the following heating devices:

  • . The main advantages of the potbelly stove are small size, mobility and safety, determined by the simplicity of the design. It is ideal for rooms in which heating communications have not yet been carried out and it is possible to bring the stove chimney out into the street. The potbelly stove quickly ignites and heats up, and its small shape allows it to be used in many situations. Unfortunately, the design of the stove is such that with frequent and prolonged use, the stove body burns out, no matter how thick it is, therefore it is often not recommended to operate the stove;
  • . It is somewhat more difficult to manufacture than a potbelly stove. Used oil is used as fuel in such a stove, which is very cheap. And, since the very idea of obtaining a stove from a gas cylinder is caused by the desire to save financial resources by alternatively using waste material, such a stove will not only save on the shell material, but also constantly save on fuel. Since not only oil is burned, but also its vapors, there is practically no waste from the use of the stove. However, due to the high fire hazard and toxicity of the fuel itself, such a stove is not suitable for use in residential premises;
  • Rocket oven. Compared to other handicrafts, it is larger and more difficult to manufacture. The advantages include the continuity and duration of fuel combustion in it. Does not suffer from long breaks in cold weather. The disadvantages include some inconveniences when regulating the air supply and the difficulty of controlling heat transfer when the furnace is fully heated. A disadvantage can also be considered a certain complexity of manufacturing such a device; in comparison with other home-made stoves, more materials and labor costs will be required here;
  • . Very simple in execution, in its classic design there are no doors . A certain disadvantage is that before the start of operation, it is difficult to determine the optimal size of the gaps through which oxygen is involved in the combustion process; when using certain types of fuel, pyrolysis gases do not have time to burn out and the stove can begin to smoke heavily. Also, this kind of furnaces, as a rule, have a low initial heat transfer, which is partially compensated by the duration of heating after one filling.

Used products are made of durable and high-quality steel, they are often used on the farm as a basis for a variety of fixtures and fittings

Preparation phase

To be used as a housing for a furnace, the cylinder must be suitable for the following range of parameters:

  • The cylinder must be all-metal, composite materials are not suitable - they are not heat-resistant and explosive enough;
  • The volume of the gas cylinder must be at least 12 liters. Stoves from cylinders of smaller volume are not economical due to the low ratio of volume and surface area. The fuel in such a furnace will not completely burn out due to the high heat loss. Cylinders with a volume of 12 to 27 liters are suitable for the manufacture of small stoves for heating small rooms from time to time. The most suitable gas cylinder volume is 50 liters. Furnaces of this size are suitable for long-term operation, they efficiently use any fuel;

Industrial pneumatic cylinders (the common size is 40 liters, smaller sizes are used for helium) are not suitable for converting them into any heating devices using household improvised means. They have very thick walls, and they themselves are heavy and bulky, their shape is not suitable for use as a firebox - they are too elongated.

Furnace making

To make a stove from a gas cylinder, it will have to be cut, and for this, the product must first be prepared:

  1. Even if there is confidence that the bottle is empty, you should fully open the valve or valve before starting any action;
  2. After the gas remains escaping through the valve, it must be dismantled. This should be done only with the help of hand tools; cutting the valve with cutters or grinders is unsafe - gas residues can detonate. To remove the valve, you can simply knock it down with a sledgehammer or saw it off with a hand hacksaw. It is safest to unscrew the valve, but this is not always feasible in a domestic environment;
  3. Water is poured into the hole formed after dismantling the valve in order to displace the remaining gas outward with its volume. This action is not very convenient, then you need to drain the water from a heavy cylinder. Therefore, before filling the container with water, it is worth considering the possibility of comfortable removal of water from the workplace. You can simply rinse the gas cylinder with water from the inside, but this does not always ensure complete disposal of the remaining gas. There have been cases when, even after repeated washing with water, residues of combustible gas ignited when cutting metal;
  4. For the convenience of working with the cylinder, so that it does not roll, it is recommended to provide supports to keep it horizontal. Or he simply digs into the ground to a certain depth, which fixes him in an upright position.

Further manipulations with the future firebox depend on the design of the furnace.

Potbelly stove from a cylinder

For a stove-stove, you can use products of a relatively small volume:

  1. Places for the cut are pre-marked with a marker. It is necessary to determine the place for laying the fuel, openings for the air duct and chimney;
  2. A hole is cut in the sidewall of the cylinder, suitable in size for laying firewood in the future. The cut out part can be used as a door, having previously sanded its edges;
  3. A frame for attaching the stove door is made of steel corners. This frame is welded to the wall of the gas cylinder;
  4. The door is screwed to the frame with bolts, for a snug fit of the door, it is recommended to use hinges;
  5. Weld next to the door or bolt the door closing device (latches);
  6. A cast iron grate (grate) is welded to the bottom of the furnace to support solid fuel. To hold the lattice itself, steel corners can be welded from the inside;
  7. A hole is cut in the body below the bottom of the firebox for air duct and ash removal from the stove;
  8. It is required to make a box from sheet steel without one wall and top. This box is welded to the duct opening, with its help ash will be removed;
  9. A flap is attached to the welded box with the ability to regulate the air supply;
  10. A hole for the chimney is cut on the side of the door or on the side opposite to it. The chimney pipe should be curved, elbow type, so that the heat does not go away too quickly;
  11. The pipe is attached to its hole in the cylinder or to a steel ring pre-welded to the neck;
  12. Legs are welded to the bottom of the gas cylinder.

The chimney pipe must be bent, elbow type, so that the heat does not go away too quickly

Bubafon stove

The stove with the name bubafonya belongs to long burning stoves, which is provided by pressure of a kind of piston on solid fuel, which increases the efficiency of the stove. With this combustion method, pyrolysis gases are formed and burned, which additionally heats the furnace.

Making a bubafon stove is no more difficult than a potbelly stove:

  1. The upper part (top) is cut off from a cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters. Clamps are welded to the cover, which should hold it on the body;
  2. To make a piston, you need a metal disc with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the inner circumference of the cylinder. It is required to ensure that the piston can move freely inside the housing, and the size of the lateral gap is sufficient for the release of warm gases;
  3. To provide oxygen supply to the lower compartment of the furnace, a pipe will be needed., the diameter of which must be sufficient for the passage of the air flow supporting the combustion process. The height of the pipe should be 8-12 cm more than the height of the body;
  4. There should be a hole in the center of the piston disc the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the pipe;
  5. Steel sections are welded to the inner side of the piston disc, converging in the center and diverging to its edge (like flower petals). This will not allow the disk to adhere closely to the fuel and thereby cut off the oxygen supply;
  6. The long pipe is inserted into the disc bore and welded tightly. In order to prevent the disc from deforming under the influence of high temperatures, it is recommended to make stiffening ribs on the outside of the disc;
  7. In the center of the previously cut off cylinder cover, you need to make a hole with a diameter slightly larger than that of the piston tube used. This is done so that there is a gap between the lid and the pipe, allowing more oxygen to be drawn in for the complete combustion of pyrolysis gases;
  8. In the cylinder body itself, a hole is made just below the cover for the subsequent attachment of the chimney. The diameter of the chimney must be at least 10 cm. The chimney must have at least one elbow, its length must be at least 2 meters, the longer the chimney, the better the draft.
The height of the pipe should be 8-12 cm higher than the height of the body

Rocket oven

The so-called rocket stove represents the top of the hierarchy of heating devices made from empty gas cylinders. Its name reflects not only the characteristic sound when the furnace is not working correctly, but also the efficiency achieved by making the most of the burned fuel.

High efficiency is ensured by combustion of both the fuel itself and pyrolysis gases released during combustion. The fuel material is loaded into an angled firebox and burns down gradually. The firebox is connected to the body. Through the blower, oxygen enters the combustion area in the furnace body, providing the process of additional combustion of pyrolysis gases.

The rocket furnace consists of two main parts: a body made of a cylinder and a loading box, where fuel is loaded. For manufacturing, among other things, you will need a welding machine and, accordingly, skills in working with it, since the process of manufacturing a furnace is completely welding.

Manufacturing of the case:

  1. The top is cut to make a hole with a diameter of about 250 mm;
  2. The resulting hole is closed metal disc up to 5 mm thick;
  3. The upper part of the balloon is cut off at a level of 5-6 cm below the previous cut, as a result, we get a cover.
  4. A strip of sheet steel approximately 6 cm wide is welded to the resulting lid., so that you get a kind of straight "skirt";
  5. Holes are drilled around the circumference of this skirt at the same distance from each other. Bolts will then be screwed into them;
  6. An insulating sealing gasket is glued to the cover, for example, from a high-quality asbestos cord, while full impregnation of this gasket with glue should be avoided so that it does not lose its elasticity;
  7. After that, the cap with the gasket is put on the cylinder., pressed down by the load and in the cylinder body, through the previously made holes in the skirt, holes are drilled through;
  8. The bottom of the cylinder is cut off at a height of 8 cm from the ground, a hole is cut from the bottom of the cylinder to accommodate the inner part of the flame tube in the housing.

The main elements of the furnace are made from a pipe with a square section of 15x15 cm:

  • chamber for air intake and cleaning the furnace from ash (blower),
  • combustion chamber,
  • flame tube.

These elements are welded together so that the part into which the fuel will be loaded is located in relation to the body at an acute angle up to 60 °. The blower and chimney are located approximately on the same line at the bottom of the structure, while the flame tube is inserted into the hole made in the lower part of the body.

A door with a latch is attached to the outer part of the blower for the possibility of regulating the air supply... For the upper part of the combustion chamber, a cover is also made, which is sufficiently tight to the walls of the loading opening.

In the center of the body, two round pipes with a diameter of 7 to 10 cm and 15 to 20 cm, respectively, are vertically placed one into the other. A flame tube is welded into a pipe of a smaller diameter. The space between the vertical pipes is filled with a non-combustible filler that has the ability to retain heat (expanded clay, vermiculite).

The blower and chimney are located approximately on the same line at the bottom of the structure, while the flame tube is inserted into the hole made in the lower part of the body

Operating rules

Most used gas cylinder stoves are not suitable for permanent residential use. Their safety level is not very consistent with fire safety requirements.

When placing such devices, it is important to try to place them on a level surface to prevent the possibility of falling. If the stove is placed on a surface that can catch fire, then it should be placed on mineral cardboard or a sheet of roofing tin.

When using products in a closed room, it is necessary to take into account that due to the fact that the firebox body is made of metal, the air in the room “burns out” rather quickly. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that the rooms are regularly and adequately ventilated.

  • If it is possible to choose which air spring will be converted into a stove, it is recommended to choose a product not with a valve, but with a valve, which can then be used as an air supply regulator and thus control the power of the oven.
  • For the convenience of subsequent cleaning of the stove chimney, it is recommended to make it composite, and for better control of the state of the chimney, it is possible to attach a "revision" to it - a component of the chimney system that allows you to quickly remove condensate.

But really, what can you do from a gas cylinder with your own hands? It just so happened since the times of the Soviet Union that many products can be fundamentally processed and new designs can be obtained from them that will perform completely different functions. From a gas cylinder, as it turned out, you can do a lot and, mind you, everything will be done with your own hands.

Balloon oven

First of all, when you are looking for an answer to the question of what can be done from a gas cylinder with your own hands, a stove-stove comes to mind. The advantages of such a unit are many, as in the very principle of installation. Firstly, the thickness of the walls of the gas cylinder is 3 mm and this is quite enough so that the potbelly stove from it does not burn out already in the first season of operation. Secondly, you will have to modify the gas cylinder quite a bit - the oven is made in one day with your own hands. The third advantage lies in the huge choice of designs: you can make the oven from one cylinder or from two, vertical or horizontal. Your own fantasy or tips from the Internet - and you can make a product from a gas cylinder that will help you out in the cold winter.

There are also disadvantages. Rather, these are not even disadvantages, but features that must be taken into account so that they do not turn into disadvantages. For example, it is necessary to remove the paint from the outside of the parts from the cylinder before the first firewood heating. Otherwise, the paint will begin to fade and fill the room with acrid smoke. You also need to ALWAYS take care of fire safety. The walls of the stove from a gas cylinder can get red-hot and this is fraught with many troubles. It may seem to you that such heating is only a plus, because it will be warm inside the room. But everything that can flare up from such a strong heating will certainly flare up if it is too close to the stove. And the walls of the room itself need to be taken care of: our cinder block wall of the workshop cracked vertically along its entire height after several evenings of use. What can be done to protect the wall: install the stove at a distance from it, protect it with a galvanized screen mounted on the wall at a short distance from it, or heat the stove in moderation. The latter, by the way, is not the best - it will be difficult to “guess” the optimal amount of firewood. And the most important thing: a stove from a gas cylinder with your own hands (and albeit by strangers too) will cool down very quickly. As long as the fire burns inside, as long as firewood is thrown, it will be warm. But as soon as the wood burns out, the stove instantly cools down. The insulated walls of the room where such a potbelly stove will be used will help, and the elimination of even minimal gaps in the area of windows, doors or gates of the room.

Feeders for animals and poultry

This is another option for what you can do from a gas cylinder with your own hands and still get excellent quality. Such feeders seem, if not eternal, then 100% durable. The gas cylinder is cut along its axis and you get two halves, each of which will be an excellent feeder for pigs, sheep or a drinker for poultry. It remains only to weld the stand, since the lower part of each of the halves will be semicircular and, by itself, will not stand on the ground. You can also cut off the top and bottom of the cylinder along the line of the washer rings and get round small feeders. They are suitable for small animals and provided that we are talking about one or two individuals. Or maybe it will be drinkers for chickens - you decide.

Here you also need to take into account some features, so as not to be upset later. Since food will be poured into such feeders, the gasoline should be especially thoroughly cleaned from the inside. If the cylinder has survived multiple refills and has not been cleaned, then gasoline is collected inside, which has a very strong odor. Strong odor plus oiliness over the entire surface - this must be removed so as not to poison the bird and animals. How to do it yourself: a set of actions helps, including washing in boiling water using various cleaning agents, burning out with a blowtorch and cleaning with nozzles on a drill or angle grinder.

Manual compactor roller

And also from a gas cylinder, and also with your own hands. A skating rink is a rarely used thing, but if you really need it, it is difficult to find it. Tamp the asphalt surface if you have to do it yourself and you don't have to rely on the rink; ramming the base under the paving slabs, compaction of the soil - there can be many situations. The main thing is that making a manual roller from a gas cylinder with your own hands is even easier than the previous crafts, which we mentioned above. A U-shaped pipe with a diameter of about an inch, the ends of which will be attached to the center of the upper and lower parts of the cylinder by means of bearings and a handle that is comfortable for your hands in shape and length - that's the whole structure. Water or sand is used as a filler. The water is lighter, the sand is heavier, so the choice depends on the purpose of the ice rink.

The main thing is safety. Since the parts will be welded to the gas cylinder, care should be taken to clean the gasoline to prevent trouble. We'll talk about this in more detail at the end of the article.

Other balloon crafts

If you thought that a stove, a feeder and a roller is the whole list of what you can do from a gas cylinder with your own hands, then you are mistaken. There is no limit to ingenuity: various containers for storing something, a smokehouse, a brazier, a feed cutter, an autoclave, a compressor and even a boiler - this is a relatively complete list of crafts. Another thing is that some of these designs are not always justified and it will be easier to purchase (buy) a ready-made unit for safety reasons. If the master knows what he is doing with his own hands and it is so safe for operation, then the question is removed. But if the mind is not enough, then you can either ruin yourself or your relatives. We do not want to offend anyone, but there are different cases.

How to disassemble a gas cylinder

We promised above that we will teach you how to disassemble the cylinder safely and we keep our word. First of all, do not think that everything is so simple and safe - if you act incorrectly, you can get burned in the literal and figurative sense of the word. Let's take an example of our youth. This was exactly the period when there was little experience, there was no Internet, but there was a burning desire to use the gas cylinder for other purposes. Logic dictated that one should be wary of even that insignificant amount of gasoline inside, but did not want to get too dirty. Therefore, knocking down the valve with a sledgehammer, we began to fill the cylinder with water, shake it off and drain the liquid. After repeating this five times, we decided that the threat was gone. The grinder began to saw the cylinder along the axis and already 90% finished the work. And only then (!) The remnants of the gasoline flared up and the master was enveloped in a cloud of flame. It's okay - just burnt eyebrows and hair all over the exposed body - but it's unpleasant.

The instruction will help you disassemble the cylinder (cut) without consequences:

  • Even if you have confidence that the bottle is empty, you need to open the valve. Bleeding off even that insignificant amount of gas, you once again hedge yourself.
  • The valve must be dismantled. Here everyone tries according to their capabilities and imagination. Some knock him down with a sledgehammer, others cut him down with a grinder or a hacksaw for metal, and still others unscrew him. The last option is the safest, but difficult to do at home. It is difficult to clamp the balloon so that it does not spin under the force of the key. If you use a valve cut at the very base of the cylinder, then ONLY with a hand saw! No cutters and angle grinders!
  • The hole that formed after removing the valve is small in diameter, but even this is enough to pour water inside. Why is this necessary? The water will dislodge the remaining gas and most likely nothing will flare up when cutting. Here is a slight difficulty, or rather, an inconvenience: you need to cut the bottle with water inside and the water will surely flow out of the resulting cut. There is nothing you can do about it - this is such a feature that you need to be able to adapt to. For example, the place where you will work with your own hands should be such that spilled water does not collect and you do not have to knead the dirt with your feet. Naturally, this operation should take place outdoors and not indoors.
  • If the abundance of water cannot be avoided, then you can risk rinsing the cylinder several times, rinsing off the remaining gasoline. Just note: we specially wrote the word "take risks", since we cannot give guarantees of safety. in our case, as you remember, there was almost no gasoline, but its flash followed already at the end of the cut.
  • Cutting with a grinder is the fastest way. Mark the line with a marker (the pencil graphite will quickly fly off the surface from the vibration) and start cutting. Since the gas cylinder is round, it is better to put something under it from the sides so that it does not roll during operation.
  • Cleaning of the inner surface is necessary even if the cylinder structure will not be used for poultry or animal feed. The smell is strong and persistent, so you need to remove it. For starters, you can wash with boiling water using various types of cleaning agents. This will help in part, so burnout follows. Blowtorch or fire - decide for yourself. Both options will help 100% and all you have to do is complete the metal brushing. It is better to use the appropriate attachment on a drill or grinder to make things go faster.

Instead of a conclusion

As you can see, the question "what can be done from a gas cylinder with your own hands" has many answers. The main thing is your safety, because you are going to work with your own hands, which means that you are risking them. Any construction that you make from a balloon will serve you for a long time. Reason: high quality steel, which is now rare. But we also advise you to think over everything thoroughly - is it worth doing the thing with your own hands, if the store version is more reliable. For example, we would not risk working with a home-made compressor from a cylinder or a boiler - life is more expensive.

Optimizing the cost of heating a country house is a very urgent task for its owner: what to use as fuel, which heating unit is the best. Self-made stoves from gas cylinders are very popular, allowing you to use very cheap, sometimes just waste fuel. In this case, heating costs are minimal.

Making a heating unit with your own hands from a cylinder

The zealous owner carefully insulates his house, trying to reduce the cost of heating it. In addition, there are a number of objects that need to be heated periodically: workshops, garages, outbuildings. Greenhouses or conservatories need to be heated regularly.

Therefore, home craftsmen are constantly developing and implementing additional heating units of various designs. The most popular are products made from gas cylinders. The reason for this is the convenient shape and almost ideal proportions and characteristics of the material.

The efficiency of cylinder furnaces reaches 85–90%, which is a very high indicator in comparison with homemade furnaces of other forms. The rounded shape is ideal for intensive pyrolysis of fuel and allows you to arrange openings for smoke and oxygen supply to the combustion zone at the lowest cost.

A simple and efficient gas cylinder oven will last a long time

What is a cylinder oven

The classic representative of heating units from an old cylinder is the well-known "potbelly stove". She received this name for her extraordinary gluttony, consuming a large amount of fuel. But its main advantage is fast ignition and heating. This is especially important in extreme situations when, for some reason, the main heating stops working.

In the design of such a furnace, the cylinders can be in both vertical and horizontal positions. Heat transfer occurs through the surface of the furnace and can be significantly increased by welding metal ribs onto the surface. In addition, the heat of flue gases can be utilized by passing them through a pipe cut into a container with water. Water heated in this way is used in the heating circuit or is used on the farm through an indirect heating boiler.

Pyrolysis ovens occupy a special place in cylinder heaters. Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of fuel that occurs with minimal oxygen access. At a temperature of more than 300 degrees, the fuel in the furnace does not simply burn out during the oxidation process, but decomposes into gas fractions, which give higher temperatures when ignited.

What cylinders can be used

Not every gas cylinder is suitable for the manufacture of the furnace body. For example, the use of composite cylinders is not recommended. Despite its strength, the composite does not tolerate high temperatures well.

A capacity of 5 liters cannot serve as a furnace body due to its small size, but containers for liquid fuel are successfully made from it.

You can use cylinders with a volume of 12 and 27 liters. They make excellent thermal units with a capacity of 2-3 kilowatts and 5-7 kilowatts, respectively.

Most often, furnace bodies are made from cylinders with a capacity of 50 liters. Its dimensions - a diameter of 30 centimeters and a height of 85 - are optimal for a heating unit. A stove of this volume is capable of high-quality heating of a small country house.

A propane tank with a volume of 50 liters is best suited for the body of a homemade stove

Oxygen cylinders for ovens are rarely used. The size ratio is not entirely convenient for a firebox device, and a significant height makes such a unit unstable.

Types of furnaces for long burning from a gas cylinder

There are many options for making furnaces from cylinders. Each home master makes their own changes to them, corresponding to the capabilities and understanding of the process. At the same time, pyrolysis ovens of long burning are the most popular. In such designs, the combustion time of the combustion material varies from 12 hours to a day or more, which can significantly reduce fuel consumption.

Conical stack ovens

A popular type of pyrolysis furnace is the conical fuel stack design. In such a furnace, a pin is installed along the axis of the firebox from the grate. When loading, a wooden or tin cone is put on it with the base up. The firebox is filled from above with sawdust, shavings or wood chips. In this case, the heating material must be well tamped so that the bookmark is as dense as possible.

When the fuel is loaded, the cone must be pulled out and the lid closed. The fuel is ignited through a blower with a small amount of chips or a dry fuel pellet. As soon as the fuel flares up well, the blower door must be closed, limiting the flow of air into the firebox. Further, the fuel simply smolders, but this is enough to reach the pyrolysis temperature. Smoke is discharged through a pipe at the top of the housing. With this design, "samovar" water tanks are also used for a radiator heating system or for heating water in an indirect heating boiler. It is convenient to use a gas or oxygen cylinder as a container for heating, passing the chimney pipe along the axis of the vessel. In the upper part, a fitting for hot water is welded, in the lower part for the return. The circulation takes place naturally without the use of a pump, which makes the heating system energetically independent.

Burning time of one bookmark is 12-16 hours.

Sawdust should be tamped as tightly as possible

Liquid fuel pyrolysis furnaces

For these heating units, fuels such as diesel, diesel fuel or waste oil are used. The use of other energy sources is considered exotic due to their high cost.

Consider the option of using waste oil as fuel. To make the simplest oven, you need:

  1. Install a pipe with a diameter of about 100 millimeters in the upper part of the cylinder.
  2. About 30 holes with a diameter of 10 millimeters need to be drilled into the pipe walls.
  3. Place a bowl-shaped container with a diameter of 120–140 millimeters with sides 25–30 millimeters high at the bottom of the balloon.
  4. A tube with a diameter of 10 millimeters with oil and a fuel supply regulator is supplied to the container through the wall of the cylinder.
  5. The combustion products are discharged through a side pipe in the upper part of the body.

The cold oven is fired up in the following order:

  1. Open the tap on the fuel tank and pour the used oil into the bowl to about the middle of the walls.
  2. Pour up to 50 grams of gasoline on top of the oil. Having a lower density, it will remain on the surface.
  3. Light up gasoline. As the temperature rises, the oil boils and begins to emit vapors, which also ignite. The air flow draws the flame into the perforated pipe.
  4. With a further increase in temperature, fuel pyrolysis occurs, and the combustion intensity increases. In this case, flue gases are removed through the upper chamber along the side pipe. The temperature in the combustion chamber is such that the pipe heats up red-hot, and from it the furnace body quickly heats up.
  5. Under these circumstances, it is advisable to partially cool the furnace gases in the chimney using a samovar-type water heater.

With all the positive qualities of such a heating unit, including the simplicity of the design and the cheapness of the fuel, there is a significant drawback. In the room where such a furnace works, the smell of burning oil products is constantly present. Therefore, the structure must be taken out of the residential or industrial premises.

Solid fuel long-burning furnaces

Solid fuel appliances use the following fuels to generate heat:

  • firewood;
  • woodworking waste in the form of sawdust, shavings, scraps, wood chips;
  • peat;
  • coal.

There are known cases of using used tires for heating after shredding them.

One of the most popular designs of this type is considered to be a homemade stove with a funny name "bubafonya". It can be manufactured with minimal labor and materials. The basis for manufacturing is a body made of a gas cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters.

The fuel for such a unit can be technological chips, crushed remains of branches and twigs, sawdust and shavings. The only requirement for it is that the humidity should not exceed 12%, which corresponds to the standards for fuel in wood-burning stoves. The burning time of one bookmark is from 14 to 24 hours, depending on the density of its laying. The fuel is ignited after the weight and cover are installed. The ribs on the load form channels for air, allowing the fuel to burn and decompose into pyrolysis gases. The gases enter the upper chamber where they are burned at high temperatures.

As the fuel burns, the piston moves down

Slow burning pyrolysis furnace "bubafonya"

It is impossible to describe or simply list all the designs of furnaces that can be made from cylinders, but it is advisable to consider in detail the construction of the "bubafon". Such a model can be made at home with your own hands.

Security

Before describing the design of the furnace and the technology of its manufacture, let us turn our attention to safety issues. It's about preparing the cylinder itself for processing. Despite the dense structure, the inner surface of the metal is dotted with a network of microscopic cracks. During long-term operation of the tank for its intended purpose, a considerable amount of gas condensate and its precipitation accumulates inside these defects. Such a substance can be explosive and is in no way beneficial to health. Before starting work with the cylinder, you need to fill it with water and let it stand for 2-3 days. It is better to perform the operation away from home. When the liquid is drained, the reasons for this recommendation will become clear - it has an extremely unpleasant and strong odor.

Tools and materials for the manufacture of the "bubafonya" oven

To make such a heating unit with your own hands, you will need:

Table: required materials and tools

In addition to the above, you will need some tools from a standard locksmith's kit: a hammer, pliers, and so on.

The procedure for the manufacture of the "bubafonya" oven

The advantage of this model is that the cylinder body is exposed to the least interference. The manufacturing procedure for the bubafonya oven is as follows:

The procedure for storing fuel and lighting the stove

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Fuel preparation consists in crushing large fragments to the state of technological chips (5x20 mm) and mixing it with sawdust and shavings.
  2. Add fuel to the furnace; at the same time, it is necessary to tamp it, achieving the highest mass density.
  3. Lightly moisten the surface of the fuel tab with lighter fluid.
  4. Place the piston in the furnace body with the pan facing downwards, fully open the damper on the pipe.
  5. Close the lid.
  6. To ignite the fuel, take a small rag soaked in ignition fluid and lower it into the pipe. If you just throw a match there, it will go out along the way.
Photo gallery: how to light the bubafonya stove

When the fuel ignites, the furnace heats up. Combustion air will flow through the pipe from top to bottom. When the temperature reaches 300 degrees, the process of fuel decomposition begins. Pyrolysis gases enter the upper compartment and ignite there. From this point on, you can completely close the damper on the pipe.

The combustion process takes place as follows:

  1. After closing the damper, air enters the furnace through the slotted gap between the pipe and the edges of the hole in the lid. Combustion of pyrolysis gases creates a sufficient temperature for decomposition of the next layers of fuel.
  2. The ribs on the bottom of the pancake do not allow it to sink to the fuel layer and block the combustion. Through the cavities between them, gases enter the upper chamber.
  3. Thus, a layer-by-layer consumption of combustible material occurs with the formation of a large amount of heat.

The burning of one bookmark lasts up to a day or more.

Such stoves are equally successful in handling fuels such as peat or pellets.

Heat recovery occurs by heating the furnace body. However, it cannot be complete. It is advisable to use a samovar method of taking energy for heating through a radiator heating system.

Calculation of the basic parameters of the "bubafonya" oven

The effective operation of a furnace of this design directly depends on the combination of many indicators and their optimal interaction.

Furnace wall thickness

Based on the experience of operating long-burning furnaces, the optimal wall thickness is 4–5 millimeters. This is just such a parameter that a fifty-liter bottle has. If the wall is thinner, heat transfer is disrupted and the body burns out rather quickly.

Calculation of pancake parameters

The gap between the pancake and the inner wall of the cylinder is determined by the ratio s = 0.5D. That is, with a diameter of 300 mm, this value will be 300 x 0.05 = 15 millimeters. It should be noted that compliance with this parameter is very important. With a larger gap, the fuel at the walls will burn more slowly, as a result of which the pancake may fall into the bookmark and combustion will stop.

In practice, the height of the pressure ribs is 40 millimeters.

Pancake thickness

This parameter is inversely proportional to the body diameter. That is, the larger the diameter, the thinner the part should be. There are tables of such dependence on the Internet, for our case this parameter is 6-10 millimeters. The exact data and calculation methods are not given, but it is quite enough to adhere to the published recommendations.

Chimney section size

The minimum allowable chimney section is determined by the amount of energy released per hour of furnace operation, which is determined by the ratio S = 1.75E (kW / hour). Here E = mq, where m is the mass of the fuel in the load, q is the specific energy of the fuel that burns over an hour, the tabular value. The required information is given in the table.

Table: data for calculating the chimney cross-section

Having made the necessary calculations, we obtain the minimum required diameter of the chimney for the bubafonya stove of 150 millimeters.

Air intake pipe size

Preparing for assembly, choosing a place for installation

Before starting work on assembling the stove, it is necessary to prepare the place of its installation. After pouring the foundation, it will take time for the concrete to harden. During this period, you can slowly make the oven itself. The foundation can be used no earlier than 7 days after pouring. On top of the concrete base, you need to lay out a platform made of refractory bricks.

A good foundation is essential for the safe operation of the oven

When choosing a place to install the oven, the following circumstances must be taken into account:

  • the distance to the nearest walls made of combustible material must be more than one meter; if there is no such place, the walls must be additionally protected from heating with an asbestos sheet 8-10 millimeters thick; on top of it, install a sheet of galvanized metal with a thickness of 0.5-0.7 millimeters;
  • the chimney in the vertical part should not fall on the supporting beam;
  • if an external chimney with a wall outlet is used, the length of the horizontal part should not be more than one meter; otherwise, it is necessary to carry out the chimney with a slope of 45 degrees.

It is better to prepare parts and assemble the stove indoors, for example, in a garage. This will save neighbors from unnecessary noise when working with a grinder and from the sparkling of an electric welding arc. The room must be equipped with exhaust ventilation. If welding is carried out in the open air, the work area must be protected with protective screens.

Furnace modernization

Improving the parameters of the furnace is associated with an increase in its heat transfer. To do this, use additional heat exchange surfaces on the furnace body. Such parts can be made from various metal profiles, including strips, corners, and shaped pipes. The choice of material depends on what is available from the leftovers.

Additional heat exchangers made of metal profiles increase the efficiency of the device

Additional heating surfaces can be installed not only on the outer surface, but also inside the firebox, which makes it possible to intensively heat the air in the room. The negative result of this decision will be oxygen burnout at high temperatures.

Features of the operation of the pyrolysis oven

The main difference between pyrolysis ovens is the ability to use a wide variety of fuels. In solid fuel stoves, it is allowed to burn not only traditional combustible substances, but also rubber, plastic and other materials with which it is categorically not recommended to heat conventional stoves.

This feature is associated with the complete decomposition of the fuel and the secondary combustion of the resulting gases in a separate chamber. After that, only carbon dioxide and water vapor remain in the smoke emissions. No harmful emissions into the atmosphere during pyrolysis occur.

But when using such fuel at the stage of ignition, a persistent smell of burnt rubber remains in the room. Therefore, such heating units must be installed outside residential premises.

Maintenance of pyrolysis ovens

Pyrolysis ovens require much less attention than conventional devices. This is due to the fact that there are practically no solid particles that form soot in the flue gases. The presence of water vapor in the exhaust determines the formation of condensation on the walls of the chimney. Therefore, it is necessary to install a condensate collector with a drain cock, which must be used regularly as it accumulates.

This is true for perfectly balanced stoves, where the fuel is completely decomposed. But the breakthrough of ordinary furnace gases cannot be ruled out, therefore, regular inspection of the inner surface of the chimney is necessary. It must be cleaned if necessary. Inspection is carried out at least twice a year.

On long-burning stoves, an insulated stainless steel pipe is mandatory.

Waste oil stoves should be cleaned regularly as carbon and slag build up in the fuel bowl. In the first combustion chamber of the fuel, normal combustion takes place with the release of solid particles. The design of the furnace allows you to visually monitor the condition of this unit.

When you make a stove for heating yourself, there are no trifles. Each circumstance must be carefully weighed and considered. Otherwise, all efforts will be in vain. I wish you success!

Do-it-yourself stove from a gas cylinder: drawings, types, technology of creation

A stove from a gas cylinder can be placed where it is impossible to organize heating in another way: in a garage, a country house, a change house.

If there is a desire and time, then you can carry out all the work yourself.

This article will help you independently convert a gas cylinder into a heating or heating and cooking stove.

Here you will find drawings and training videos with which you can make a stove using waste oil, coal or wood.

Varieties of stoves from a gas cylinder

A do-it-yourself gas cylinder stove is considered the easiest option for making a potbelly stove or a heating device for working off.

The balloon can be easily converted into a stove body. For work, you will need a grinder and an inverter or any other welding machine.

The shape of the balloon allows you to make a stove with a spherical firebox. Firewood in a stove of this shape burns slowly - as a result, a kind of heat generator is obtained, capable of heating the room for hours on one tab of firewood.

A homemade stove from a long-burning gas cylinder can be used in different ways:

  • as a heating and cooking room in residential premises;
  • as heating for heating one or two rooms;
  • as a cooking stove for use in the summer in the country;
  • as an emergency portable option for use in case of malfunctions in the main heating system.

Advantages of stoves from gas cylinders:

  • it is possible to obtain a long-term combustion apparatus with practically no cost, since the system is assembled from standard inexpensive elements;
  • all work can be done independently, no need to look for specialists;
  • baths are suitable for heating;
  • video materials are available with positive experience in creating furnaces of various designs;
  • simple operation.

The disadvantages include the fact that the work should be done according to reliable drawings - otherwise the structure will not have the required efficiency.

For work, you will need to choose a suitable cylinder. You should opt for an all-metal cylinder with a volume of 12 or 27 liters.

However, for a full-fledged heating device, a gas cylinder with a volume of 50 liters and a diameter of 30 centimeters is chosen. Any fuel, including coal, can be burned in a container of this volume.

Even before starting work, you should decide on what type of fuel the furnace will work on. If you need a long-burning furnace, it is better to provide for the possibility of loading coal into it.

A long-burning stove can be made small, only on wood - for this, it provides for the possibility of adjusting the draft.

The most difficult to manufacture heating devices on liquid fuel: waste oil, diesel fuel. On the other hand, a waste oil stove allows you to reduce heating costs, since oil is inexpensive.

It is better for a beginner to start with simpler designs, for example, try to convert a gas cylinder into a regular potbelly stove.

Solid fuel stove

How can you make a stove from a gas cylinder? The first question that arises even before starting work: how best to position the balloon - horizontally or vertically?

If you want to use the oven for cooking, you will have to place the cylinders horizontally.

In the vertical version, grate bars will have to be installed inside the cylinder; in the horizontal version, this is done at will.

But in a horizontal structure, you will have to weld a pan for collecting ash, and in a vertical one, when installing the grate at a sufficient height, the ash pan can be omitted.

The potbelly stove will require cast doors for the blower and the fuel chamber.

Craftsmen make them on their own from a piece of metal cut from a cylinder when making a hole for the combustion chamber.

In this case, you only need to purchase hinges and a latch handle. For a purchased door, you will have to weld a frame welded from the corners to the cylinder around the perimeter of the holes, and fix the fittings on it with bolts.

Before you start cutting or welding metal, you need to free the container from gas. The balloon is filled to the top with water, then it is drained and only after that they begin to work.

Stages of manufacturing a horizontal potbelly stove:

  1. cut off the upper part of the container with a grinder;
  2. a grate made of bent reinforcement is installed inside the cylinder;
  3. the fittings are welded to the container;
  4. cut out a circle from steel 4 mm thick, equal to the outer diameter of the cylinder;
  5. holes-rectangles are cut in the circle - the first under the firebox, the second under the blower;
  6. weld on a steel circle;
  7. fix the doors;
  8. glue the doors along the contour with asbestos cement;
  9. they begin to re-equip the rear of the furnace - cut a hole for the chimney equal to the diameter of the pipe;
  10. a chimney is welded from a thick-walled pipe.

When the cylinder is positioned vertically, a structure will be obtained that takes up a minimum of space.

Such a stove from a cylinder is suitable for a bath, a small living space, it can be put in a garage.

Stages of manufacturing a vertical potbelly stove:

  1. cut off the top of the cylinder with a grinder;
  2. a large hole is cut out on the front of the future furnace for the firebox, below - under the blower, through which the structure will be cleaned of ash;
  3. a grate made of reinforcing rods is lowered into the cylinder and welded to the walls;
  4. a border is welded onto the holes for the doors and pasted over with an asbestos-cement cord;
  5. weld on the top - it was cut off only in order to put the grate;
  6. a chimney hole is made from above or from the side.

Bubafony stove and rocket stove

An ordinary potbelly stove has a significant drawback - low efficiency. A huge amount of heat escapes through the chimney.

In addition, one has only to extinguish the fire, and the structure immediately cools down. Pyrolysis ovens are devoid of these disadvantages, that is, devices capable of sustaining continuous combustion.

The simplest pyrolysis oven can be made from a gas cylinder. Masters call such devices bubafon.

The bubafony stove from a gas cylinder was invented by a craftsman from Russia. This happened recently, but bubafonya has already become very popular.

How does a "bubafonya" type apparatus, converted from a gas cylinder, work? A movable piston is installed inside the container, dividing the cylinder into two parts.

Fuel (wood) burns under the piston, and above it - gases released from the wood as a result of pyrolysis.

This principle of operation leads to the burning of wood in the "reverse order" - from top to bottom.

Reverse combustion is slower than usual, in which oxygen is fed into the fuel chamber from below, through the blowing holes.

In a bubafon, air is supplied to the firebox by a piston axis, which is a hollow tube. Oxygen enters the pyrolysis chamber through openings cut in the end of the gas cylinder.

The division of the firebox into two compartments allows the wood, even with a lack of oxygen, to burn through to the end, without turning into coal.

The system is so effective that a bubafony from a gas cylinder on one tab of firewood works for 4 - 6 hours.

There are reliable reviews that a bubafony from a 200-liter barrel works on one tab for a whole day.

Bubafonya can be used for hot water heating. For this, the gas cylinder is enclosed in a water jacket using another metal case, and a water pump is connected to the system.

The rocket furnace was designed for survival in extreme conditions. It has high efficiency and maximum safety.

At the same time, a homemade rocket furnace is so simple that it can be made by a non-professional. In rocket furnaces, the principle of pyrolysis is used, that is, fuel under conditions of oxygen deficiency decomposes into volatile substances.

The simplest pyrolysis oven can be made from any cylindrical metal container, for example, a barrel or a gas cylinder.

Rocket stoves can be equipped with stove benches. Such structures are still used in China and Korea for heating peasant houses.

Structurally, a rocket stove from a gas cylinder consists of a blower, a fuel chamber with a blank cover, a channel for an oxygen plant into the pyrolysis chamber, a flame tube in which gases are burned, and a chimney.

Oil fired stove

In individual farms, it is sometimes possible to use waste engine oil. In this case, heating costs are dramatically reduced.

To burn oil, you need to assemble a special furnace that runs on liquid fuel. A working heater and a simple wood-burning stove work on different principles.

At first glance, a working oven is no more complicated than a pan, but complex chemical and heat engineering processes take place in it.

The gas cylinder working furnace consists of the following parts:

  • containers for oil;
  • combustion control dampers;
  • oil filling holes;
  • chimney.

For the manufacture of a furnace from a gas cylinder, tanks with a volume of 50 liters are used.

The cylinder is sawn in a ratio of 2: 1. The smaller part will be used to make the tank, the larger one will become the afterburner.

The principle of operation of such a furnace system is as follows:

  1. oil is poured into a fuel tank and set on fire;
  2. air is supplied to the chamber through an air throttle and thus greatly limits the intensity of combustion;
  3. as a result, the fuel does not burn, but evaporates, that is, the pyrolysis process begins;
  4. the oil "steam" rises into the upper chamber and burns out completely there.

In other words, the fuel is used twice - first the oil burns out, and then its vapors burn out. As a result, no waste remains, and the efficiency of such a furnace is as high as possible - 80%.

Waste oil is a heavy, highly contaminated and poorly burning mass with a complex composition. Two-stage combustion allows full use of the entire resource of this fuel. The structure is positioned vertically.

On top of it, you can install a rack-stand for placing buckets, pots and other utensils.

Drawings, which must be strictly adhered to, and training videos will help to make a furnace for working out from a cylinder.

The disadvantage of liquid fuel stoves can be attributed to increased safety requirements. Fuel supplies have to be stored away from the boiler room.

A construction that runs on waste oil cannot be used as a sauna stove, but it is useful for heating workshops, change houses and living quarters.

In the latter case, it is better for her to build a separate boiler room in the form of an extension to the house.

So, now you know how to make any oven from a metal gas cylinder with your own hands.

Having the necessary drawings, a grinder and an inverter, you can easily make a mobile and efficient heating device that will help out in the winter when other types of heating are turned off or not.

What can be done from a gas cylinder with your own hands

As a preface

Many of us often have gas cylinders in our everyday life. They are made of sufficiently high quality metal, which is sometimes simply a pity to throw away. In order to get started, you need a similar capacity of 50 liters. It is often left over from propane.

A little about security measures

You may not even be aware of this, but there will be residual gas inside. Of course, you can't start working with them, you need to get rid of them. To do this, simply open the container and leave it for a few hours. Just make sure there is no fire nearby. Also, after all this, rinse the container with water. It will completely rid the cylinder of gas residues. You can also use chlorine or lime to cleanse. True, after this, an unpleasant smell may remain. But it is easy to remove it. It is enough just to hold the product over the fire for a while. Wait for the paint to burn.

Work process

From the resulting cylinder, it will be possible to make a portable compressor station without any problems. Surely you have a large number of wheels on your farm. They need to be pumped up from time to time. So such a home-made invention would be very useful. Small wheels will make such a station as mobile as possible, you don't have to carry heavy tires with you.

In order to get to work, you must first find a reducer, the maximum pressure of which will be 2 atmospheres. With it, even children will inflate their wheels without any problems.

Next, you can easily build a stove. She will do an excellent job of heating the workshop. To create it, only one burner is needed, which can heat up to 140 degrees and a small chimney. By the way, with such a device it is possible to dry nuts easily and do many more manipulations. Look at the photos below to see how it all looks.

Of the interesting things, the skating rink for the garden should be noted. It can also be used as a track aligner. To do this, it is enough to simply prepare a special iron base, which you can easily hold onto. You can make such a skating rink in just an hour, or even less. It all depends on how quickly you find the iron handle.

Lovers of outdoor recreation can also be satisfied. In particular, you can make a quality barbecue. To do this, simply cut out the top. By the way, it is possible to make a smokehouse without any problems by combining several cylinders at once. Look at the photo below. Looks pretty good.

By the way, if you have any parts from the cylinder, then in no case throw them away. It is possible to make a stand for the burner from the half. You just need to attach a few small legs. You can also use part of the sidewall. It should be used as protection for a sharpener.

As you can see, there are a lot of options. If you do not have a desire to do something complicated, then you can, for example, make an ordinary urn out of a balloon, decorate it. In general, it's enough just to show your imagination. Do you have piglets? Then just make a feed trough for them. This is a great savings opportunity.

Diy potbelly stove from a gas cylinder: instructions on how to make

In many private households there is an old LPG cylinder. Many useful things can be made from this object, for example, a simple heating device.

If there is a desire and a welding machine, then a potbelly stove from a gas cylinder with your own hands can be made without any problems. Of course, some additional materials will be needed.

How it works

Potbelly stove is a primitive version of a metal wood-burning stove. Such a device works extremely simply: firewood is put into the firebox, they burn out, the furnace body heats up and gives off heat to the surrounding air. Flue gases are removed through the chimney, and the ash is poured through the grate into the ash pan, which should be periodically cleaned.

One of the main advantages of a potbelly stove is its simplicity of design. There are no strict dimensions, the main thing is that the body withstands heating, and the chimney works properly. An experienced craftsman will make such a stove in just a couple of hours. And almost any dry tree can be burned in it: both logs and sawdust.

Stove stove is also heated with other combustible materials: diesel fuel, coal, peat, household waste, etc. If desired, you can cook quite successfully on such a stove. This point should be thought out even before the manufacture of the structure begins in order to make a flat hob.

The potbelly stove is a thick metal combustion chamber with a loading door, chimney, grate and blower. An old gas cylinder can be used as a body

But one should also take into account the disadvantages of such a heating solution. For starters, there is a high risk of burns and fires. For the stove, you need to choose a special place, finished with fire-resistant materials. It is advisable that she stand to the side, where no one accidentally touches the body and does not get burned.

If desired, the upper part of the vertical stove from an old gas cylinder can be turned into a modest-sized hob

Such a metal structure weighs a lot, so we are not talking about any mobility of the device. It will be difficult to move the potbelly stove to heat different rooms. Such stoves are usually used to heat utility rooms in which there is no electricity or where it is supplied intermittently: a garage, a shed, a workshop, etc.

From two gas cylinders connected perpendicularly, you can make an improved version of the stove, which allows you to store more heat and get high efficiency when burning fuel

Another problem is the low efficiency, since part of the thermal energy during the combustion of wood literally flies into the chimney. There are various ways to keep warm and modify the stove a bit to make it work more efficiently. Finally, you need to take care of good ventilation of the room in which the stove is installed, since such a device burns a large amount of oxygen during operation.

So, a potbelly stove consists of a metal case, the role of which is usually “invited” to an old gas cylinder. In the case, you need to make two doors: a large one and a small one. The first serves to load fuel, the second is needed as a blower through which air enters from the combustion chamber to ensure the combustion process and traction.

A drawing of a stove-stove from a gas cylinder allows you to make a device with specific parameters and calculated power, but such accuracy is not required

Below, at some distance from the bottom of the structure, a grate should be welded. It can be made from thick wire, or you can simply take a sheet of thick metal and cut long slits in it. The distance between the grate bars should be such that the furnace material does not spill down into the ash pan. If the stove will be heated only with wood, the gaps of the grate are made large, but when it is supposed to use chips, the grate should be made more frequent.

A curved metal chimney installed on a stove from a gas cylinder allows you to keep more heat in the room and increase the efficiency of the structure

The ash box can be welded from sheet metal or you can take a ready-made metal container of a suitable size and resistant to strong heat. Some people prefer to do without an ash pan at all, they just rake the ash out of the lower section as needed, although this is not very convenient. The chimney is usually led upward to provide the necessary draft.

A potbelly stove from a cylinder can be different: the container can be placed horizontally or vertically. You need to choose a case of the right size, and then use it correctly. You will need sheet metal made of steel that is resistant to prolonged heating, thick wire for the grate, a corner for the legs, etc. In the manufacturing process, a number of nuances should be taken into account so that the stove turns out to be convenient and efficient.

How to choose and prepare a balloon

Gas cylinders are very different. For a potbelly stove, a container for liquefied gas of 50 or 40 liters is best suited. If you need a small oven, you can take a cylinder with a volume of 12 or 27 liters. But it will be a device for heating small utility rooms. Similar containers of five liters are practically useless. Such a small potbelly stove will heat up quickly, but will soon cool down, so the heating effect from it will be very insignificant.

An interesting option for a homemade potbelly stove is a container for freon. Such a container has thick walls and an elongated body. The container must be cut so that the length of the body is about 70 cm. Thick walls, of course, make the structure heavier, but retain heat better. The potbelly stove will warm up for a long time, but it will also heat up longer.

Before starting work, it is necessary to properly prepare the gas cylinder: bleed the remaining gas from it, drain the condensate and fill the container with water, which can then be poured

When the cylinder is selected, you need to prepare the welding machine and remember the safety rules. Even in a very old cylinder there will always be some residues of combustible gas. If you immediately start cutting it with welding, a life-threatening explosion is almost guaranteed.

To begin with, it is recommended to open the cylinder and bleed off the remaining gas. Of course, this should be done outdoors, not indoors. Then you need to drain the remaining liquid condensed inside from the cylinder. This substance usually has a strong and unpleasant odor, so it is best to prepare a small container with a lid for it in advance so that it can be carefully packaged and discarded immediately.

There are no particularly strict requirements for the parameters of the stove stove design. The larger the combustion chamber, the more spacious the room can heat the unit

If condensation is accidentally spilled on the floor of the room, a specific aroma can persist for a very long time. After all these operations, the cylinder is still not ready for contact with the welding machine, because residual gas vapors remain inside. It is necessary to fill the cylinder with water to the very top in order to completely displace all the gas from it. After that, the water is drained, now the cylinder can be cut without problems.

Manufacturing and filling of the case

Next, you need to select the type of potbelly stove from the cylinder, whether the cylindrical body will be located horizontally or vertically. All other operations are carried out with this orientation in mind. If the horizontal position is selected, then one of the ends of the cylinder will serve as the back wall, and on the other you need to install a loading door and a blower.

If you plan to make a vertical potbelly stove from a gas cylinder, you will need to make two holes: for loading fuel and for a blower with an ash pan

Thick reinforcing wire can be used for the grate. In order not to cook a grate out of it, you can bend it with a frequent zigzag, "snake". This structure is welded to the inner walls of the metal body. The front wall is made of sheet metal as follows:

  1. The metal needs to be applied to the front of the stove to apply the markings.
  2. A round part should be cut out according to the marking.
  3. Apply one more markup to it: for a rectangular door and a blower.
  4. Cut holes according to the marking.
  5. Make doors.
  6. Weld the hinges, locks to the front wall and hang the doors.
  7. Weld the wall with doors to the body.

Both doors should be sealed along the contour with an asbestos-cement cord so that they fit well to the body. The back wall in such a potbelly stove usually does not need to be done, its role is played by the bottom of the cylinder. In the upper part of the body, close to the back wall, you need to make a hole for the chimney.

The pipe must be taken from thick metal, since the lower part of the chimney will be in contact with heated flue gases. Thin metal in this place will quickly burn out. Now, strong legs made of reinforcement, pieces of metal or pieces of metal corner are welded to the bottom of the stove. They must support both the weight of the structure itself and the fuel that will be loaded into it.

Roughly the same technology is used to make a vertical potbelly stove from a cylinder. The bottom of the cylinder will become the lower part of the structure, at the top you need to make a cylindrical “roof” with a hole for the chimney. Usually the top of the balloon is cut off. At the end of the installation, it will be possible to weld it back on. Doors - for loading and blowing - are made in the front of the cylinder body.

Such a potbelly stove will take up less space than the horizontal version, and it will also be higher. If it is supposed not only to heat the room, but also to cook food, then it will be necessary to adjust the height of the stove taking this moment into account and ensure an even hob. But usually the diameter of the cylinder is not large enough to provide a full cooking opportunity. Boiling the kettle is a doable task though.

This drawing allows you to get an idea of \ u200b \ u200bthe device of a horizontal version of a potbelly stove from a cylinder, to the bottom of which a box for ash is attached

The grate can be made in the same way as described above: from fittings bent by a snake along the pipe diameter. It is welded between the loading and blower holes. Some try to reduce the amount of welding required by leaving the top of the cylinder virtually untouched. But then all other work will be more difficult to perform.

In a horizontal potbelly stove, you can not weld the grate, but turn a part of the body into it by drilling holes of a suitable diameter and attaching a box for ash from below

For example, the grate will not have to be inserted from above, but inserted into the furnace door and somehow held in the correct position. Now you need to make doors with hinges and locks and weld them to the stove body, pre-sealing with an asbestos-cement cord. It remains to install the chimney at the top, and weld the legs at the bottom.

Doors, grate bars, ash pan

Doors for a potbelly stove can be made from those parts of the body that remained after cutting out the holes. Hinges and latches are welded to them. These are simple elements. Loops can even be made from thick chain links. The second, more expensive, option is to buy ready-made cast metal structures.

To install a ready-made cast door on a home-made potbelly stove, a frame from a metal corner should be welded to the loading hole

You can choose between two separate doors: a large one for the inlet and a narrow one for the blower. But there are also kits in which such doors are combined into a single structure. Holes for such doors must be cut exactly to size. After that, you need to weld the frame from the corner to the edges of the openings.

Several links of a thick bicycle-like chain can be used as hinges for a homemade potbelly stove door made from a cylinder

The frame of the cast doors is attached to the resulting frame with bolts. It is recommended to pre-weld a small side so that there are no gaps and the oven closes hermetically. In small potbelly stoves, you can, if you wish, do without the grate at all.

On the left is an inverted case of a horizontal stove with an ash pan welded to it, and on the right is a general view. The ash pan is pulled out to regulate the flow of oxygen, the blower in such a model does not need to be done

Finding a place for it is difficult if they make a small stove or a low one, for example, a horizontal version. In such a device, no blowing is made, air access is provided with the help of a loading door, which is simply opened slightly. Rebar grates are easy to make, but they are not particularly reliable.

Over time, the fittings burn out, they have to be replaced. An alternative is a piece of sheet metal that has circular slots or holes cut into it. To collect ash, you can use a special box - an ash pan. In the horizontal version, the potbelly stoves from the cylinder can be installed in the lower part, complete with the ash pan, since the lower part of the body will have to be cut off to facilitate installation.

How to improve efficiency

To make the stove work more efficient, there are several simple ways. To begin with, you should insulate the chimney in order to retain some of the heat that goes away with the flue gases. Various methods can be used to increase the area of contact of the heated metal with the surrounding air.

Some experts recommend making the chimney not strictly vertical, but curved. This will increase the path of combustion waste and allow some of its heat to return to the room. But it should be remembered that the complicated design of the chimney can adversely affect the draft, so you should not get carried away with excessive bends.

Sometimes metal wings are welded to the body of the stove, for example, made from a corner or any suitable strips of metal. If the dimensions of the stove allow, you can weld a horizontal sheet of metal from above and make an additional hole in it not for the chimney, but for a saucepan or kettle. The hole is closed with a special compound cover made of several concentric circles. By removing or adding circles, you can adjust the degree of heating.

Another option for modernizing a potbelly stove is a brick case. The masonry is carried out around the stove, while leaving a small gap between the metal body and the brick. The brick will absorb some of the thermal energy, and then gradually give it to the surrounding air.

If you wrap the chimney with a metal mesh and put stones in the gap, you can increase the heating efficiency. Even after the wood burns out, the stones will give off heat for some time.

An alternative version of such a modernization is a metal mesh around the chimney, into which pieces of brick or stone are laid. This is a popular solution for stoves installed in a sauna, a variation of the heater. But it should be remembered that only river "pebbles" of a uniform color and without blotches are suitable for this. If the stone is composed of different types of layers, it can burst under the influence of high temperatures.

If you need a solid-sized oven, the master has two gas cylinders at his disposal, you can combine them into one design. One of them is installed horizontally, and the second is placed vertically as a branch pipe for a chimney. The heating area increases, such a potbelly stove will work more efficiently.

Metal pipes built into the stove body, in combination with a fan, allow you to increase the speed of warming up the room, but to achieve this effect, you will need electricity

Finally, you can insert pipes inside the upper part of the body through which air will circulate. If you put a fan at the end of these pipes, the air will move faster. This equivalent of a fan heater will allow you to warm up the entire room in a few minutes and distribute heat energy more efficiently.

Conclusions and useful video on the topic

This video tells about the procedure for making a stove from a gas cylinder:

An original potbelly stove with the function of pyrolysis afterburning of fuel can be made from two gas cylinders:

A potbelly stove is a simple device that is not difficult to build and can be widely used. If the order of work is thought out in advance and correctly executed, such a stove can last long enough.

Potbelly stove is a small home-made metal stove that became widespread in the first half of the 20th century. Later, with the advent of district heating, its popularity declined. The second wave of its mass use fell on the years of the Great Patriotic War, and the third - in the 90s of the same century, for heating summer cottages. Today potbelly stoves are more often used in garages or utility rooms. In their pure form, without alterations, they are uneconomical: they "eat" fuel, like the bourgeoisie, and if you stop "feeding" them, they quickly cool down. The easiest option to manufacture is a potbelly stove from a gas cylinder. The body is already ready, you just need to cut out the holes for laying the fuel and ash pan, and attach doors to them, weld the legs and chimney (diameter 150 mm and not less).

The cylinder in such a stove can be placed vertically or horizontally. It heats up quickly, but it also cools down immediately after the fuel has stopped burning. Nevertheless, in order to quickly remove a garage or cottage from freezing temperatures or heat it in autumn / spring bad weather - an excellent option.

Which cylinder to take for the stove?

It is clear that a gas cylinder will go for the body. But they come in different sizes. The smallest 5 liters should not be used for the manufacture of furnaces: the volumes are too small and it will not be able to heat anything. There are also cylinders for 12 and 27 liters. They will make a low-power unit for a very small room: you cannot get more than 3 and 7 Kilowatts of heat from them. In principle, this can be a hiking option, but the weight will turn out to be solid.

The best option for a stationary potbelly stove in a garage or a summer cottage is a 50 liter gas cylinder. Height 850 mm, diameter 300 mm. The volume and wall thickness are large enough to burn any fuel. At the same time, it is not very heavy, you can work with it alone. A potbelly stove from a 50 liter propane cylinder is the best option.

Industrial 40-liter gas tanks have about the same volume, the diameter is less - 250 mm, the height is higher, and the walls are thicker. A stove from a freon cylinder, with the same power that can be obtained from it, will be more difficult to make: the mass is large, and it is long. By shortening the height to about 700 mm, you can make a small thick-walled potbelly stove, which will warm up a little longer, but it will also “keep” the heat a little better.

Important! Observe safety precautions when working with gas cylinders!

How to safely disassemble a gas cylinder: see safety precautions in this video.

What and how to make doors

Doors for a potbelly stove can be bought cast. You will need a small height for the blower and a larger size for fuel filling. There are ready-made blocks - a flow door with a blower in one design. In this case, a welded-to-size frame from the corners is welded into a cut-to-size hole, and the casting is bolted to it. To prevent blowing out of the slots, a small side is welded along the perimeter of the cutout under the door - a 1-2 cm strip of metal.

You can not buy the doors, but use a cut out piece of the balloon wall. Then you will need some kind of hinges or replacement parts. With hinges it is clear: mark the places, weld. There is such an interesting version of homemade loops: several links of a thick chain.

You will need to weld another latch to such a door.

With or without grates?

In the simplest version, no grates are provided. If the balloon is small, or stands horizontally, then it is problematic to select the part inside. In this case, the design of a potbelly stove from a cylinder is quite simple: the body, put on legs, one door, a pipe for connecting a chimney is welded in the upper part. Everything. The whole stove.

The photo above are examples of such simple ovens. To improve heat transfer, metal strips are welded to the body from the outside to improve heat transfer. In the upper part, in addition to the smoke pipe, there is another outlet - a lid is installed on it, and this outlet is used as a stove for cooking, heating tea.

If you still want to make grates in a potbelly stove from a horizontally installed cylinder, you will have to weld the ash collection pan from below. Below there is a drawing and a photo of a practical implementation.

In vertical versions, potbelly stoves from a cylinder are most often installed. In this case, it is easier to allocate a place. Usually, rods of thick reinforcement are welded inside: it is difficult to find a cast iron grate of a suitable size. But this option is bad in that the fittings quickly burn out, and the repair is difficult: remove the old fittings, weld on the new ones. You can weld pieces of a thick corner or reinforcement inside (as in the photo), separately weld the grates from the reinforcement and lay them on the corners.

This video tells about how to make a stove from a gas cylinder with your own hands - grates are made of fittings.

Improving heat transfer

The biggest problem of bourgeois women: inefficient use of heat. Most of it literally flies into the chimney with flue gases. This disadvantage is effectively combated in upper combustion furnaces with afterburning of flue gases similar to the Bubafonya furnace (also, by the way, can be made from a gas cylinder) and Slobozhanka.

Option of a stove made of propane cylinders with secondary afterburning - the efficiency is higher than that of "conventional" models.

Another way to improve heat transfer is to make the chimney longer, thereby increasing the amount of heat that will remain in the room. When designing such a broken chimney, it is better to avoid horizontal sections, and even more so sections with a negative slope.

This gas cylinder stove runs on wood. Increased heat transfer by making a long, broken chimney

Another option to use the heat of flue gases is to weld a vertical cylinder-smoke branch pipe to a horizontally located cylinder-body. Due to the larger area, heat transfer will be higher. You just need to create a good draft so that the smoke does not go into the room.

You can do it as they do in sauna stoves: put a grid around a metal pipe, into which stones are poured. They will take heat from the pipe, and then give it to the room. But. First, until the stones are heated, the air will warm up slowly. Secondly, not all stones are suitable, but only round ones that are along the rivers. Moreover, they are uniformly colored without inclusions. Others must not fall asleep: they can explode from high temperatures no worse than a fragmentation shell, or emit radon, which is very harmful in significant concentrations.

But this solution has its advantages: firstly, the pipe will not burn. The stones give off an even heat. Secondly, after the stove goes out, they will maintain the temperature in the room.

It is often necessary to quickly heat the room. To do this, you can use a conventional fan that will blow the body and / or tube of the furnace. But the same idea can be done with a stationary design: weld through pipes into the potbelly cylinder in the upper part. On the one hand, attach a fan to them (heat-resistant, preferably with several speeds so that it is possible to regulate the temperature).

Another option that allows you to achieve active air movement along the walls of the case and not use a fan: make a casing around the case at a distance of 2-3 cm, but not solid, but with holes at the bottom and top. This is the principle used by Buleryan stoves or metal sauna stoves.

One of the variants of such a casing around a horizontally located cylinder can be seen in the photo below. Cold air near the floor is sucked in through the gaps at the bottom. Passing along the red-hot body, it heats up and comes out from above.

The principle is not new, but from this it is no less effective. What a finished stove looks like with such a casing, see the photo below.

Here is another casing implemented around a potbelly stove from a horizontally located cylinder. Pay attention to the non-standard door fastening.

A homemade boiler from a gas cylinder for water heating can be made according to the same principle: weld a water jacket around the cylinder, and connect it to radiators. Just do not forget that the system must have an expansion tank with a volume of 10% of the total displacement.

Now you know how to make a potbelly stove from a gas cylinder and how to improve it. Watch another video about an interesting version of a combined stove for a summer residence or a garage made of bricks and a gas cylinder.

Brazier from a gas cylinder: varieties and manufacturing instructions

Every lover to sit with friends or with his family in the evening at a barbecue in the country needs a barbecue. But those barbecues that are often slipped to us in the store are not suitable either in size, or in quality, or in the thickness of the metal.

Therefore, the best way out of the situation will be to make a brazier with your own hands, and the most convenient workpiece for this will be a gas cylinder, which itself is already a brazier, you just have to cut it along with a grinder.

A gas cylinder has very thick walls, since it has to withstand very high pressure during operation, and therefore any product from it will be reliable and will serve for a long time. Its diameter, that is, the width of the future brazier, just fits the average skewer, and the height can always be made in accordance with your height, so that it is convenient to roast meat. We will talk about some varieties of barbecues from gas cylinders, and, in particular, about the technology of their manufacture, in this material.

Preparation

Whatever design we choose for ourselves, everything in any case will start with the fact that the cylinder needs to be removed from the remaining gas and cut in accordance with the drawings.

So, we take an ordinary 50-liter cylinder from under the combustible propane gas, and we look at the object no longer from the position of its intended use, but with an assessment of what and how it can turn out in the process of interfering with its structure of grinders, drills, welding machine and other tools. And, of course, the first priority is to get rid of the remaining gas in the cylinder.

Do not trust people who say that the bottle is empty. The concentration of gas even in an "empty" cylinder will probably be enough to break this metal shell into pieces upon contact with sparks, causing a lot of injuries to the hapless creator of barbecues along the way. And therefore, nevertheless, we unscrew the tap completely. On an old cylinder, the fitting may refuse to scroll flatly, and therefore will have to rip off the "stuck" metal with improvised means. The very first thing that can be done is to try to rip it off at the same time by leaning on the open-end adjustable wrench and tapping, in addition, on the free space of its handle with a hammer.

If this does not help, you should resort to the help of the now adjustable water wrench, on the longer, reduced handles of which you can put a long metal pipe as a lever.

No thread can resist such an effort, the main thing is to fix the cylinder so that it does not turn with the key through a stop angle.

Also, in order for the unscrewing to go smoother, you can moisten the place where the tap thread touches the cylinder with VeDeshka, after waiting two hours after an hour and letting the liquid act.

Then the container must be filled with water so that it pushes all combustible gases out of the cylinder without leaving any residue. Having done such a manipulation, you can be 100% sure that during the cutting process you will not fly away on your potential grill to the moon.

As soon as the container is full, it is not recommended to drain the water immediately. Instead, screw the valve back into place and start marking the body.

This is done as follows. On one side of the cylinder there is already a factory longitudinal seam, which in this case will serve as a kind of beacon for us. Having measured the full length of the circle, we divide it in half and put marks on half of it, that is, on the side opposite to the lighthouse. After that we measure another 8 cm from it towards the lighthouse, this will be the mark by which the container lid should be marked. We add 8 cm so that the container is deeper, can hold more coals, and the meat does not burn at a low height.

After that, you can take a grinder and cut out that part of the cylinder body, which will henceforth turn into a kind of barbecue cover. In this case, it is worth noting that you need to cut not along the seam itself, but next to the existing seam, otherwise the inner steel ring that holds the structure together can be damaged. The edge of the ring will be needed to hold the canopy cover, that is, so that it does not fall into the inside of the barbecue.

The photo below shows how the master, not understanding the situation, cut the frame incorrectly. Taking a closer look, you can distinguish a ring on the left inside the balloon. If he cut it with a grinder near the seam, the edge of the ring would stick out, thereby performing the function of a "brake" for the lid. But in any case, this is easy to fix by simply welding the pieces of metal from the inside of the container.

Now you can remove the fitting by cutting it flush with the body.

After that, you can use a grinding wheel to clean the place from burrs.

Further, the order of work will depend on what the functionality of the barbecue will be. In particular, you can expand its functionality to the level of a smokehouse, which we will talk about after completing the review of various models of simple barbecues.

Varieties of barbecues from gas cylinders

The simplest solution would be to simply cut the cylinder lengthwise into two halves, drill a number of holes on the sides so that the coals "breathe", weld the legs to the bottom, make slots for skewers, and the grill is ready.

But the following method is more popular. Although using this method, two braziers from one cylinder will no longer work, but one will turn out, but much more aesthetic, because it will have a lid, and the brazier will be deeper, because if, as we discussed in the previous section, we made the lid on 8 cm less, the brazier itself has become 4 cm deeper. In addition, due to the lid, you can maintain the maximum temperature of the coals for longer.

In order to make the brazier more mobile, a pair of legs on the right or left can be equipped with wheels. Then, by lifting one edge, you can easily roll it from place to place. In addition, if there are two wheels, the other two legs can be replaced with one, which will simply serve as a stop. Also, the brazier can be equipped with a small table top for seasonings, cutlery (plates, knives or forks), etc. For ease of transportation, a handle can be welded on from the edge opposite to the wheels.

As a bed, a heavy cast-iron stand from under an old sewing machine is excellent, which, due to its large weight, will reduce the risk of the structure turning over.

Forged parts and a chimney will not only give the structure a more presentable and sophisticated look, but also improve the functionality of the brazier.

Sometimes it is necessary to cut open an old gas cylinder in order to use it profitably on the farm. For example, a cut gas cylinder can be used as a water reservoir in an autonomous heating system. Due to the design features, the cut cylinder is convenient for lighting a fire in it, it can serve as a hearth for a forge.

There are rules for cutting containers in which flammable materials were stored. This article, in particular, will tell you how to cut an old propane gas cylinder.

Required tools and materials:

  • Empty propane gas cylinder
  • Hacksaw for metal
  • Funnel and water bucket or garden hose
  • Empty plastic bottle
  • Grinder and protective mask for grinder

Work order

  1. Open the cylinder valve as far as it will go and make sure there is no gas left in it. If no sound of gas escaping is heard, it is necessary to soap the valve outlet, check that all the gas has escaped.
  2. Lay the bottle on its side.
  3. Take a hacksaw for metal.
  4. Begin to cut the brass valve of the cylinder "under the root". Brass is easy enough to saw with a hacksaw for metal.
  5. Use a friend to help: while sawing off the valve, a second person should pour water into the sawing site from a plastic bottle or watering hose to prevent sparks.
  6. Having cut the valve, fill the bottle with water. To do this, you can use a bucket (pour water through a funnel) or a long garden hose. Fill the balloon to the top.
  7. As the cylinder is filled, shake it to flush the condensation from the walls.
  8. After filling the cylinder, you can drain the water, but not near the house, but somewhere near the landfill, since the drained water sometimes emits a strong smell of propane, which does not disappear for several days.
  9. After all the actions taken, the cylinder is sawn with a grinder. The thickness of the metal is about 3 mm. So sawing shouldn't be a problem for you.

This is a standard cutting technique for containers that have held combustible materials. Personally, several cylinders have already been cut by this method.

Brazier is an integral part of organizing outdoor trips, recreation at the dacha and receiving guests in a country house. It has become a tradition for many families to gather at the table under the aromatic smell of a barbecue. However, more and more often men (and we know that it is they who prepare the best kebabs) not so much compete in the quality of meat preparation, as they boast of the functions and appearance of the technical "filling" of this process - the barbecue. Many people are no longer so interested in buying a "leaky box with legs", but want to do something special. A grill from a gas cylinder, although it seems, at first glance, to be ordinary scrap metal, copes with its tasks much more efficiently than any other industrial design. In this article, we will consider in detail all the stages of work related to the self-assembly of the finished product, including the preparation of cylinders, their marking and sawing, as well as provide useful tips for working with such homemade equipment.

When you look at such a work of art, you do not immediately understand that this multifunctional grill is made of recycled materials.

Advantages and disadvantages of a do-it-yourself barbecue

Gas cylinders are perfect for "rebirth" in barbecues and in general in any construction associated with heating. They are made of durable steel, come in standard sizes, and are easy to find in the country and in the garage, or buy literally at a bargain price.

Advantages of a grill from a cylinder:

  • Versatile design... All models of gas cylinders are unified. There are not so many varieties that "something went wrong." Accordingly, it will not be difficult to find a couple of identical containers for creativity with a grinder in hand.
  • Heat resistance... The metal will not burn out or deform even after prolonged contact with open fire.
  • Multifunctionality... In such a grill, you can cook not only kebabs, but also bake vegetables, as well as smoke and fry.
  • Security. Once cooked, you do not need to extinguish the coals with water. For these purposes, it will be enough just to close the brazier with a lid.
  • Large volume. In such a homemade grill, you will feed not only yourself, but also a large company. Especially if you spend energy on welding a multifunctional unit.
  • Availability. The main thing is that a welding machine and a grinder are at hand. This is an actual moment, because the price of a brazier from a gas cylinder, even taking into account the overpayment for some elements, will end up being lower than the cost of the purchased model.

One of the advantages of a home-made barbecue is the ability to create a mobile model, which, if you really want, can neatly and unnoticed for guests along with snacks and you move to another part of the garden

For work, it is better to take a 50-liter cylinder. They have ideal dimensions for making a barbecue: its diameter is 30 cm, and its length is 85 cm.

There are not many disadvantages, but they are also worth mentioning:

  • In winter, the metal will cool down very quickly, therefore, to invite friends to barbecue, you have to throw off for firewood. Since it will be much more difficult to maintain the desired temperature in the grill.
  • Unattractive appearance... If you do not spend a certain amount of money on the purchase of special heat-resistant paint, very soon your grill will lose its presentation.
  • Toxicity... Before using a brazier from gas cylinders, it is necessary to get rid of the remnants of rot and dirt that could accumulate on the inside of the cylinder for many years. Therefore, before starting all work, the cylinders are carefully opened, and all the parts are calcined on the fire and only then they begin to process, clean off the dirt.

How to prepare a drawing for making a barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder

Despite the fact that barbecues from gas cylinders are considered quite simple devices in their design, before resorting to any work, it is better to draw a drawing. The pros do this using special 3D programs. For beginners, simple drawings of a barbecue from a gas cylinder with typical dimensions are suitable.

Schemes for marking the main technological holes and the design of a standard barbecue, barbecue - barbecue, as well as a barbecue-smokehouse made from gas cylinders

On the drawing of a brazier with your own hands from a gas cylinder, it is necessary to indicate the dimensions of each component, which will help to correctly and accurately make the markings, and, therefore, cut all the parts. Such calculations will help determine how much material is required for work, as well as understand in advance about the options for connecting different structural elements.

One of the main mistakes beginners make is that they forget to mark the place for the blower. That is why you should not refuse to create such a "hint" that will help to organize all stages of work correctly.

At this stage, it is important to decide whether your design will perform any one function or will combine several. For example, for a barbecue, you need to cut the lid additionally. And for a full-fledged smokehouse, not two, but as many as three cylinders are useful.

What tools and materials are needed to work

For work on cutting a cylinder, arm yourself with a gas cutter or a grinder. In the process of work, it is worth taking care of the availability of the following materials and tools:

  1. Steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm with a 90 ° elbow (for the chimney).
  2. Angles for fastening elements and strengthening the structure.
  3. Hinges - you can use elements designed for doors or furniture.
  4. BBQ grill.
  5. Rivets, bolts and other items.

Welding machine and grinder are the main tools when working with metal

What tools and accessories will be needed when working on creating a brazier from a gas cylinder:

  • welding machine;
  • electric grinder;
  • electric drill;
  • drills designed for metal work;
  • clamps with which you can fix metal components;
  • metal ruler;
  • electrodes with a diameter of 3-4 mm;
  • cutting and cleaning discs for the grinder;
  • scriber;
  • core;
  • adjustable and gas wrenches;
  • set of wrenches.

How to make a brazier with your own hands from a gas cylinder - step by step instructions with a photo

Before proceeding with any manipulations with gas cylinders, it is necessary to free it from gas residues. Even in an empty container, a suspension of liquid hydrocarbons almost always remains, which can explode on contact with air.

Illustration Description of action
The first step is to remove the valve. First of all, you need to fix the balloon on the ground. To do this, "grab" it to the stop. Next, we fix the gas wrench.

We increase the "traction" with the help of such a steel pipe, it plays the role of a lever. We do this very carefully.
After the valve is open, fill the container with water, maybe soapy, and leave our bottle for several days.

During this time, the water will have time to dissolve liquid hydrocarbons, fill the container again and drain again. Our balloon is now safe. And you can start the next stage of work.

How to mark and open a gas cylinder

If we are talking about a standard cylinder of 50 liters, in these designs the outer diameter of the container is 96 cm.This value should be divided into four parts. When carrying out these actions, you will receive a value of 24 cm. The markings should be done along the longitudinal seam. It is recommended to measure all distances from this line. This rule provides a straight line without distortions.

You will need to measure 24 cm from the seam on both sides and draw lines. The main thing is not to cut them around the entire circumference and leave a part sufficient for the device of the base of your barbecue.

Side seam marking option
After trimming "by marks" such blanks are obtained.

We process the edges as evenly as possible to ensure maximum sealing of the barbecue container

At the place where the valve was present, a pipe should be installed with the help of which the smoke will be removed.

Blanks for the future chimney

So that the heat in your barbecue spreads evenly and there are no leaks on it, you need to weld steel strip pads to the joints of the lid and the body.

This is how you can improve an ordinary cylinder with a pair of gratings, a grinder and metal corners.

If you have not welded a corner for skewers inside the cylinder, you can insert it into the sides of the barbecue.

To do this, you need to make slots with the help of a grinder. The ends of the skewer will be located in them.

How to make legs for a barbecue

The tall legs will also need additional support, which is provided by a welded corner. It should be placed on the outer perimeter. Attaching the legs can be the easiest and a bit extravagant.

For the manufacture of legs, corners or conventional welded pipe structures are often used, welded to the structure. The main thing is to ensure the stability of the barbecue.

How to weld covers and handles and assemble the entire structure

The lid is usually created at the first stage of the grill or barbecue. After processing the edges, it is almost the first element attached to the main structure. The most difficult moment is not so much to attach the hinges as to ensure a snug fit of the structure. Sometimes a thermometer is attached to the lid.

The hinges are welded at the beginning, but the handles are most often fixed after the final painting of the product. In order for the lid of the barbecue to open not completely, a piece of a 10 × 10 square must be welded onto the counterpart of the curtain, which is located on the cylinder itself.

Such limiters allow you to control the angle of the cover tilt and keep the hinge from breaking.

We mark the holes and slots for the skewers. We weld on the barbecue rail. Do not forget to decorate our "blower" a little.

It is better to provide holes in the base of the structure in advance. They will rid your grill of dust and dirt and remove excess moisture when it rains. In addition, additional holes will add extra traction.

How to paint a brazier

If you think that you can paint the brazier with ordinary paint, then you are very mistaken. Under the influence of high temperatures, the usual coating will turn into soot after the first heating. There are two obvious solutions. The first is to leave everything as it is, and the second is to spend a certain amount of banknotes on a special heat-resistant paint.

However, there is one very important thing to do before running for a brush and in the store for paint. Burn some wood in our grill. This is done in order to destroy residual gas substances and degrease the structure.

It is better to burn the grill on the street or indoors, where it will be as safe as possible.

The surface of the barbecue can be covered with different materials:

This is how our grill began to look after painting

We add that the barbecue model discussed above is the base for many similar designs. Most craftsmen improve their homemade products with additional cylinders, thereby expanding the functionality of the device.

What else can be done from a gas cylinder - manufacturing nuances

On the basis of a gas cylinder, dozens of variations of grills, barbecues and smokehouses can be made. For convenience, we will briefly describe some of these devices:

  1. Open grill from a gas cylinder... The simplest type of construction is from a gas cylinder. Even a schoolboy can make such a grill.

    How to make a smokehouse from a gas cylinder

    Consider some of the features of making a smokehouse from two cylinders.

    The base for a brazier-smokehouse with your own hands from a gas cylinder can be a stand for an old sewing machine or such a welded structure.
    We think in advance about the options for fastening a retractable or folding table. The design can be different.

    We prepare the cylinders following the instructions above. We cut each of them like simple barbecue braziers. Do-it-yourself smokehouse from a gas cylinder is best done according to drawings.
    The only difference is that it is necessary to make a hole in the firebox for the "blower", which will allow you to control the process of smoldering coals. Which, in turn, will create the smoke necessary for smoking.

    And here we have such a multifunctional smokehouse from a gas cylinder with our own hands.

    Features of using braziers assembled by hand

    Before deciding to create or purchase such a product, pay attention to some points:

    1. First of all, understand for yourself that any structure that works with fire is potentially life-threatening.
    2. Ask yourself in advance where the product will be stored during the cold season.
    3. Learn how the barbecue works and its features. Each structural element has its own purpose.
    4. Prepare all materials for work in advance.
    5. Do not leave small children unattended near a power tool, much less a cylinder.
    6. Consider how to buy a brazier from a gas cylinder if you are not completely sure whether you can complete the work yourself.

    And it is quite possible that already this summer your neighbors on the site will strive to take a selfie with such a work of art.
