Sample of laying out tiles in a small bathroom. Layout of tiles in the bathroom - step by step instructions with photo examples

Such an important room for the whole family as a bathroom, then you have many difficult decisions and dilemmas ahead of you. You will need to decide on the style of the room, choose finishing materials for all surfaces (protecting walls, ceiling and floor from high humidity is the main task), decide on the models of plumbing and accessories for it. But in this publication we will focus on the method of finishing the bathroom surfaces using ceramic, glass or stone tiles.

For many years, tiles have been one of the most popular finishing materials for bathrooms, especially among our compatriots. And there are many reasons for this. Tile, glass, stone and its artificial counterpart have a lot of advantages, which significantly outweigh minor disadvantages.

Currently, the range of tiles for bathroom surfaces is incredibly wide. No matter what material the tile is made of, it has the following advantages over other finishing materials:

  • moisture resistance. Perhaps not one of those materials that are widely used for facing the planes of rooms for water procedures does not have such a high level of resistance to high humidity;
  • strength and durability. Ceramic and glass tiles will last a long time if the installation was carried out correctly and the owners of the bathroom did not use aggressive methods of cleaning and mechanical stress during operation. Stone tiles can serve faithfully for more than one generation of your family, but you need to be prepared for the fact that grinding may be needed (for example, marble is ground every 3-4 years);
  • practicality. The tiles are very easy to care for, they are not afraid of the effects of chemical cleaning agents;
  • the tile practically does not fade, its appearance remains in its original state for a long time, the color and pattern does not fade or wear off;
  • a wide range of sizes, shapes, textures and a huge color palette;
  • versatility of application. The tile fits easily into any stylistic direction that you can choose for the bathroom.

Among the shortcomings, few can be noted:

  • complexity of installation. If you have no experience working as a tiler, then you will probably have to turn to a professional for competent and correct, aesthetically pleasing tile installation. Such services are not cheap, but the cost of spent finances, time and energy is compensated by the beautiful appearance of your bathroom, durability and practicality of the finish;
  • if we talk about ceramic tiles and mosaics, then their cost varies within the average cost of lining a bathroom, glass and especially stone (even made of artificial material) moldings will cost significantly more, installation services will increase in price in proportion to the cost of the material;
  • the presence of connecting seams (joints). The smaller the tile size, the more joints there will be, which must be treated with a moisture-resistant grout. Over time, the color of the grout changes, it darkens, possibly the appearance of mold, so timely care and prevention of the formation of fungus is extremely necessary. But this problem can be easily solved with the help of modern antiseptic agents for bathrooms.

The choice of material for facing tiles

Ceramic tile

The most popular type of cladding (especially in our country) is ceramic tiles or tiles. Possessing all the advantages of finishing tiles, ceramics, among other things, are also very affordable in terms of cost. The choice of shapes, sizes and colors of ceramic tiles is incredibly large. You can be absolutely sure that the range of modern stores selling ceramic tiles is able to meet the needs of customers with different wallet sizes, color and stylistic preferences.

Curly tiles in bright colors are great for cladding an accent wall, if the rest of the bathroom surfaces are made in light, neutral colors, then the effect will be amazing.

A brick-colored cotto cast is obtained from red clay and most often does not use glazing. Natural colors, usually within the terracotta color scheme, bring a touch of originality and originality to the bathroom interior. Especially European designers fell in love with cotto tiles for their natural color and warmth. If you are planning a retro-style bathroom interior, then it is difficult to come up with a better type of tile.

Clinker tiles are mainly used for cladding swimming pools, outdoor showers. Extrusion, thanks to which the clinker is made, makes it possible to obtain products of complex geometric shapes. Therefore, manufacturers often offer whole sets for facing complex surfaces of corners, niches and holes for taps and other attributes for water procedures.

By placing the tiles vertically, you achieve a visual increase in the height of your water treatment room. With a horizontal arrangement, the area of the bathroom visually increases.

Possessing all the positive qualities of ceramic tiles, mosaics can, among other things, serve as a finishing material for complex surfaces. For example, mosaics can be used to decorate a bathtub or sink, decorate a niche or arch, or trim a mirror or countertop.

Porcelain stoneware

The tiles, which have all the advantages of ceramics, are reinforced in terms of wear resistance and durability. Porcelain stoneware is able to withstand high loads, falling heavy objects and mechanical stress. It is usually produced as floor tiles with a rough surface to prevent slipping, but there are also models for wall cladding.

In the production of porcelain stoneware, raw materials are used, which in their composition are close to those used for the production of porcelain, but outwardly such products more resemble stone. Porcelain stoneware has the lowest water absorption among its ceramic counterparts. It is included in the highest group in terms of resistance to abrasion and aggressive environments.

Classic unglazed porcelain stoneware has a granular structure throughout the entire depth of the tile, like natural stone, but unlike the latter, it is devoid of unwanted inclusions and pores. The result is a structure that is not prone to cracking. Due to its higher density and homogeneity than that of natural stone, porcelain stoneware surpasses it in some technological characteristics, in particular, in terms of resistance to temperature extremes.

Glazed porcelain stoneware also has a fairly high technical performance, but thanks to the glaze, which can be used to obtain various surface colors, it has a wide range of color palette and printability.

Recently, tiles "under the laminate" have become popular, large dies with a pattern imitating a particular type of wood, in a natural or bleached version.

Glass

The bathroom, tiled with glass tiles, has an attractive and unique appearance, noble and elegant. But be prepared for the glass trim to add some coolness to the bathroom setting. As a rule, such a finish is made in the form of stained glass, but there are also options with photo printing. In the end, manufacturers are able to fulfill any of your whims for an appropriate reward.

Glass tiles can be either smooth or textured. Textured material is a little more difficult to care for, but the visual effect outweighs the minor inconveniences.

Stone

Marble or granite, less often basalt can serve as a material for the manufacture of facing tiles. Due to the very high cost of natural materials (especially marble), manufacturers of modern bathroom tiles offer a wide range of artificial imitation of natural materials. Outwardly, it is quite difficult to distinguish between a natural and an artificial product, but the differences will be in the technological properties.

Artificial stone has one significant advantage over natural stone (in addition to cost) - it is much lighter and easier to install.

Choosing the size of the bathroom tiles

After you have decided on the type of tiles that you will use to cover the surfaces, you will need to choose the size of the dies. Everything will depend on the area, shape and complexity of the geometry of the surfaces of the room in which the decoration will take place. If the selected material fits well into the dimensions and design features of the bathroom, then there will be much less waste, and therefore financial costs. In addition, the correct size of the tiles allows you to reduce the number of joints and small inserts.

Recently, the use of large tiles has become more and more popular, which is not surprising, because the larger the size of the dies, the fewer seams and the faster installation is carried out. Very often, designers and homeowners began to use porcelain stoneware, which previously served only as a floor covering, for cladding walls or parts of them.

But large tile sizes are not suitable for every bathroom. If the surfaces of your treatment room have curves, columns, arches or niches, then small tiles or mosaics are more suitable for cladding.

For the originality of the bathroom interior and significant budget savings, you can use various types of tiles, combining them not only in accordance with the color palette, but also the size of the finishing material dice more suitable for each surface.

Deciding on the color palette of the bathroom

One of the most difficult choices, due to the incredibly wide range of finishing materials in modern stores, is the selection of colors. In this case, it all depends on your personal preference and the size of your water treatment room. It's no secret that light colors contribute to the visual expansion of space (and for many bathrooms in standard apartments, this issue is more than relevant). If the tile you have chosen is small, again, the designers recommend staying on a light scale. But there are no canons and prohibitions.

Many of our compatriots are afraid to decorate the bathroom in white and even snow-white colors, fearing an increase in the time that will have to be spent on cleaning and cleaning surfaces. In practice, it turns out that the main obstacle to the shine and cleanliness of the tile cladding is a light bloom that remains from water droplets. And on light, white tiles, it is almost invisible, which cannot be said about the dark shades of the finishing material.

For lovers of bright colors, manufacturers of ceramic tiles and mosaics offer a wide selection of rich, colorful colors. But when deciding on a desperate step to lining the bathroom in your favorite scarlet color, for example, stop and imagine that you will need to take a bath in this red room for many years (after all, such repairs are being done, as they say, for centuries). Perhaps you will limit yourself to just one bright wall, made as an accent. Or you can use your favorite bright shade as an edging pattern, highlighting certain significant segments of the bathroom. You can emphasize the edging of the mirror with a colorful cladding, emphasize the shape of a bath or sink, or lay out a decorative panel on the wall.

Ceramic tiles with a pattern or ornament should also be approached with caution. The cladding of all the walls of the bathroom with tiles with a variegated print can lead not only to a visual decrease in the area of the bathroom, but also to a psychologically uncomfortable stay in it. Again, it is recommended to use a bright, variegated pattern as accents, dosed and locally.

Making a panel with an oriental pattern as an accent wall will not only bring color variety to the bathroom interior, but also make it more personalized and unique.

A touch of Mediterranean flair to your bathroom can be helped by edging tiles with bright blue ornaments, a mural on the wall or a floor pattern laid out with intricately patterned tiles.

Contemporary bathroom tiles

A place where you rest in mind and body, where you gain strength in the evening after the last day and find vigor before the start of the day to come.

Some of us spend so much time in the bathroom that we might question the truth about half our lives spent sleeping. And all this time we see not only plumbing, walls and our reflection in the mirror. Wouldn't you like to receive not only benefit, but also aesthetic pleasure, opening the door to the bathroom?

Bathroom tile design: a large selection

You can make the interior more interesting with. A variety of color options, shapes, textures and manufacturers can significantly complicate the purchase. The choice depends on many factors, the most significant of which we will consider in this article.

Design of tiles in a bathroom with a shower: types and features

Regardless of the size of the house or apartment, the format of the bathroom can be different. Someone prefers classic bath procedures with the opportunity to take a bath with foam and aromatic oils. Someone likes a dynamic version of the shower enclosure with a minimum investment of time and attention. The presence of a shower stall dictates slightly different rules when planning design solutions.

In order to choose the right tiles for the shower, you need to think over the design of the cabin.

1. Harmony of design

If the cabin has sharp geometric lines and the bathroom is small, then restrained tones and soft lighting would be a good option, which can smooth out visual design flaws.

2. Choice of color

The optimal color will be in two combined colors of a close range, one of which should be slightly lighter. For small bathrooms, the use of bright and contrasting colors is not recommended.

3. Suitable tiles

The finish used for the cladding inside the shower stall may not be fundamentally different from the one you decide to use in the rest of the bathroom, but it will help to make the interior of the bathroom more interesting if it is in a different shade.

4. Mosaic for edging

The combination of not only colors and shades, but also various textures will enrich the bathroom interior. Using mosaics to frame various elements of the room, you can achieve the desired accents.

5. Lighting

Lighting can be used to enrich any interior. Plus, beautiful lamps can also be an additional decoration.

Bathroom tile design in Khrushchev: 4 life hacks

Apartments in Khrushchevs are small, and bathrooms are cramped, so interior solutions require special care and ingenuity.

When planning the future design in such conditions, we are faced with a lot of restrictions - from the compact placement of the necessary plumbing and equipment, and ending with surface finishing. But even in such conditions, it is possible to create a functional and stylish interior.

Tiles of different sizes will make the design more interesting

One of the successful solutions would be to use tiles and in the design. This will help emphasize certain areas and corners to bring a sense of order to the interior.

Bright inserts will come in handy

For these purposes, bright inserts from tiles of a different type, the use of various geometric patterns when laying (for example, rhombuses or squares), horizontal and vertical stripes of other colors and shades are also well suited.

Part of the walls can decorate the drawing

Another good move in the design can be the use of inserts with drawings and images in the form of flowers, abstract elements, etc. Be sure to take into account that with such an interior solution, you first need to select the elements with a pattern and only then select the background on which they are will be posted. Otherwise, you run the risk of facing a lot of unpleasant surprises, and the sizes of the combined elements seem to be the least of the problems.

A large mirror will visually increase the space

In the bathroom, a mirror is a must. Symmetrically located lamps on both sides will be an additional decoration.

Many of the above photos of bathrooms, which are very modest in size, prove that limited space is far from a reason to give up.

Tile for a small bathroom: which one to choose

If you decided to combine a bath with a toilet and wondered how to arrange all this space, then return to the beginning of our conversation and remember the stylistic combination. You should not visually separate the toilet area, it is better to give preference to a utilitarian approach and make this room as functional as possible by adding space. Using small tiles will make the interior softer and more balanced, and you can avoid the bulky feeling of the overwhelming walls.

If you decide not to combine the toilet and the bathroom, you should arrange them in a single stylistic solution, or rather, make the toilet a logical continuation of the bath. Although options, when these two spaces do not cause any associations about the relationship, also have a right to exist, but with good taste and a sense of style, compliance with any rules turns into a convention.

In other words, bathroom and toilet tile designs may vary in color. Here, we also allow both a single style in restrained colors and contrasting elements.

Earlier, we have already touched on some aspects of the improvement of modest bathrooms and toilets. And returning to the topic of mosaic, it is worth noting that its variety on the market today can surprise anyone. In addition to size and colors, it has another significant advantage - this type of tile is suitable for finishing not only flat surfaces, but can be easily applied on convex, concave, arched, asymmetrical and other irregularities that you want to bring into your home. ...

Mosaic tiles in a small bathroom can be combined with other options that are much larger in size. If you choose the right colors, then large tiles will be an excellent addition to the overall pattern of walls and floors, and will not visually hide the area of the room.

Thinking over the project of the future bathroom, it must be remembered that the tile for the walls differs not only from the one that you choose for the floor, but also from the one that you will use in the toilet. If you are dealing with a separate bathroom, then the design of the tile in the toilet becomes a decisive factor in choosing it, since there are not many requirements for the design characteristics. And in the bathroom, more often than not, there is high humidity, so the floor finish must prevent slipping.

But there is a rule that is relevant for wall cladding in the entire bathroom: the tiles for them should be of optimal weight, so that even in an aggressive environment (frequent use of chemically active detergents and cleaning agents against a background of high humidity), she does not want to suddenly fall off at the most unexpected moment.

How to combine tiles in a small bathroom?

If it has a rectangular rather than square shape, then you have the opportunity to independently decide which type of styling to choose - horizontal or vertical. The first option is designed to visually expand the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe room, and the second (vertical stacking) seems to stretch the space up and, at low ceilings, helps to reduce the feeling of confined space. As a supplement, you can use the corresponding guide from tiles of a different, but similar shade.

For horizontal installation, this guide should be positioned around the perimeter of the room (horizontally). And, as you already guessed, for vertical styling, adding a vertical line will make a greater effect and make sense.

Design by Ekaterina Vladimirova

These options for laying tiles in the bathroom can also be combined: with a horizontal option, it is quite appropriate to use vertical elements similar in shade or inserts with a pattern, and vice versa. Adding accent to the corners of the room, using ornamental tiles and placing it at eye level will help diversify these methods.

DVEKATI studio project

A special layout of tiles in the bathroom will also help to add individuality to the interior, which can give even a standard finish an original look. In addition to the usual option, in which the seams are continuous along the entire perimeter of laying, there is also an option when the tiles are laid diagonally.

Or by the type of brickwork.

These layout options are more complex and time consuming to execute, and a lot of training and experience will be required for accurate and high-quality execution. But with the correct use of these recommendations, the bathroom will delight for many years.

Unfortunately, the majority of our population have bathrooms of very small size and sometimes it is difficult to call these bathrooms, rather they are small rooms, but we have what we have. Some people get out of this situation by combining the bathroom and toilet, making them combined into one bathroom and thereby increasing the space. But absolutely everyone is concerned about the issue of not only the area, but which ceramic tiles to choose for a small bathroom? We will try to answer this question and dispel several prevailing stereotypes and myths, show photographs and examples in interior design.
So, many mistakenly believe that there is some kind of special (recommended) tile for such bathrooms, many think that large tiles cannot be used in a small bathroom - all these are myths and stereotypes. In any bathroom, you can and should use the tiles that you like for laying. Still, most often the buyer is interested in the size of the tile for a small bathroom, what should it be? We recommend choosing a tile or porcelain stoneware size that minimizes the number of seams in the bathroom. For example, if your wall is 180 cm, then it would be better to use a tile divisible by 90 cm, thus you will get one vertical seam, if you choose a tile multiple of 60 cm, you will get two vertical seams, when choosing a tile of 30 cm, you will have 6 seams vertically. The seams require maintenance, and the more there are of them, the more troublesome further operation will be and the worse the appearance will be. You will not visually expand the space with small tiles and make your bathroom bigger, but the appearance of such a bathroom will be far from modern and completely standard. In addition, if you decide to use ceramic tiles under a stone, then the stone pattern will be better read on a large slab, it will be more visible, complete and interesting.

Photo example of tiles 45x90 cm and 30x60 cm
As you can see in the 45x90 format, the stone pattern is more extensive.
A large stove will not make your bathtub smaller or larger, only mirrors visually expand, but such a tile will make a small bathroom stylish and modern. The main issue in sizing is creating fewer seams and visual aesthetics.
If the wall in the bathroom is 2 meters, then try to choose a tile that is a multiple of 1 meter (for example, 50x100 cm), you do not need to flicker the seams, for example, choosing a tile of 25x50 cm and thereby creating 4 vertical seams, you will not gain anything from this. Therefore, there are no special tiles for small bathrooms, these are all stereotypes, do as you like.
What will help to visually make a small bathroom more spacious? Mirrors will certainly help, abandoning the bathroom itself in favor of a lightweight shower structure (ladder (drain) in the floor and glass railing):

On this design project, a fairly standard bathroom, we see a shower instead of the usual bathroom and large-format tiles.
In the photo below, the bathroom is approximately the same in size, but with standard (more familiar and primitive) tiles of a small format and with a bath instead of a shower.

(click on the photo to enlarge the image)
As you can see, in this more common version, we have 6-7 vertical seams and comparing this option with the previous project where a large format tile with one vertical seam was used as a finishing material, this or that bathroom did not become much more or less, but it should be noted that the rejection of a massive structure in the form of a bathroom helped in the first photo example to make the area a little lighter, as well as a stretch white ceiling and the use of one color scheme on the walls. Therefore, which tile to choose large or small is a matter of taste for each customer. The main thing is the correct zoning and placement.

Let's live in a new way! With modern tiles!) Don't be afraid of big tiles!

The bathroom is an intimate space. Therefore, its design should fully and completely embody simplicity, sophistication, but most importantly - comfort. Decorating a bathroom with tiles is far from a new invention, but it allows you to bring to life the most daring and most modern solutions without sacrificing convenience. The photo below is the best confirmation of this.

Advantages of choosing tiles for wall and floor cladding in the bathroom

The bathroom requires special care during the renovation. Unlike other rooms in a living room (including a kitchen), it should be not only beautiful, interesting, stylish, but also resistant to various kinds of influences:

  • High humidity
  • High temperatures
  • Abrasive and cleaning products

All this is important because, due to the specific microclimate of the bathroom, there is a high probability of the growth of bacteria and fungi, which are extremely harmful to human health (especially young children, who all strive to taste!). To avoid this, on the one hand, it is necessary to minimize this probability, and on the other, to make sure that the design does not deteriorate during cleaning and retains a presentable appearance.

Based on this, the materials that you plan to use to create the interior in the bathroom must have:

  • Resistant to moisture and temperature extremes
  • Hygiene and environmental safety
  • Easy to clean

Modern manufacturers of finishing materials provide a wide range of all kinds of materials for wall decoration. It can be moisture-resistant fiberglass, plastic panels, and decorative plaster. However, the most demanded and popular material for decorating bathroom walls has been tile for more than a decade.

Its advantages:

1. Price. Huge production volumes allow you to find the perfect combination of price and quality for absolutely everyone. Even on a tight budget, you can find what you need.

2. The tile does not cause allergic reactions and is not toxic. Thanks to the obligatory firing procedure, all potential allergens and toxins are destroyed, therefore, even with prolonged contact, there are no unforeseen reactions of the body and cannot be. This is especially important for young parents, because children's immunity is particularly sensitive.

3. Tile is a completely environmentally friendly material, therefore, during its production, the environment is not polluted.

4. During the production of tiles, all harmful microflora is destroyed under the influence of high temperatures. Therefore, the likelihood of the growth of fungi and bacteria in the bathroom with tiled tiles is lower than with other materials.

Fungi and bacteria can appear at the joints of the tiles, since the walls of houses themselves are not processed. To reduce the risk of growing mold on the walls of the bath to zero, use special antifungal compounds when laying the tiles.

5. Tiles are not afraid of water and moisture. Therefore, it will not lose its appearance and, with proper sealing of the joints, will save your neighbors from flooding.

6. The surface of the tile is very easy to clean, it is not afraid of the effects of cleaning agents. Thanks to the special coatings, dirt and grease can be easily removed from the tiles, and besides, it does not accumulate dust (such as carpet or vinyl wallpaper). For the same reason, it is often recommended to use.

7. With high-quality manufacturing and proper installation, the tiles will last for more than a decade. Rather, you will have to change it due to the fact that you are tired of the design of the bathroom, rather than for the reason that the tiling has fallen into disrepair.

8. The durability of floor tiles (as well as for other surfaces) protects its appearance from damage during furniture rearrangement, scratches from heels and other mechanical defects.

9. The high strength of ceramic tiles allows them to withstand high pressure and weight (for example, a cast iron bath).

10. The use of tiles increases the level of fire safety. This is due to the fact that it is not flammable and prevents the spread of fire. Kitchen tile for an apron is used in many respects precisely for these reasons.

If suddenly a fire breaks out in your apartment and there is no way to get out of it, a bathtub with tiled walls will become the safest place before the arrival of firefighters. The tiles will protect the room from the spread of fire in it, and a cold shower will protect you from overheating and acrid smoke.

11. Modern tiles can be a real work of art. 3D tiles, which form whole panels and paintings on the whole wall, will become a real decoration of your home.

Determining the material

Ceramic tile

Ceramic tiles are the cheapest and most common type of bathroom tile. Its prices are relatively low. Such tiles are made from clay with the addition of sand and / or minerals. Such tiles are covered with glaze, due to which a variety of textures, colors and even ornaments are created. Most often, the following types of ceramic tiles are distinguished:

  • Sprayed
  • Glossy
  • Matt

In the catalogs of many stores (for example, Leroy Merlin), there are many photos of not only the tile itself, but also its use in interiors.

It is not necessary to use only one type of tile to create a bathroom design. Combinations of two or three types of ceramic tiles look great.

Porcelain stoneware

A tile similar in composition to porcelain, but resembling a stone, is called porcelain stoneware. A distinctive feature of such a tile is its practical zero water absorption. Thanks to this, such tiles are practically not afraid of any frosts (and, in principle, temperature changes), therefore it is very often used for facing external walls. Porcelain stoneware has a texture very similar to natural stone, but is less susceptible to mechanical damage and cracks. Due to its durability, this material is recommended for floor decoration.

Stone tiles

Natural stone tiles are a stunning environmentally friendly material. Today, due to modern production technologies, its price is strikingly lower in comparison with previous years. Thanks to its texture, designers manage to create stunningly stylish interior solutions. However, since stone tiles are less workable than tiles or porcelain stoneware, the risk of bacteria growth on them is slightly higher. In addition, the stone only partially withstands mechanical damage and can be covered with microcracks.

Glass tiles

Glass tiles in bathroom design are ideal for creating a futuristic room style. It can be used both for wall decoration and for floor decoration. Glass can be transparent, translucent, colored; matte and glossy, smooth and textured.

Thanks to the use of glass tiles, you can make stylish partitions in the bathroom or disguise additional lamps.

Do not use transparent glass tiles to mask pipes, meters, valves, etc.

Tile size - matters

Despite the huge variety of shades in the palette of grouting for joints between tiles, making them completely invisible, unfortunately, will not work. Therefore, the size of the finishing tiles will be of great importance for the visual perception of your bathroom.

Standard tiles

Standard tiles are 20 by 30 centimeters. It fits best in medium to large bathrooms, as the frequency of the seams will not be distracting or annoying. Depending on the direction of laying the tiles (vertical or horizontal), you can visually expand the room or raise the ceilings.

Large tiles

A tile is considered large if its dimensions exceed 25 by 40 centimeters. As a rule, such tiles are used for floor decoration, much less often for wall decoration. In the second case, it is better to use such a tile to create the interior of spacious bathrooms or decorate its individual elements in combination with smaller tiles.

It is better to select the size of the tiles in such a way that it would have to be cut as little as possible.

Mosaic

Small tiles or mosaics have one huge and undoubted advantage - they allow you to correct even the most uneven walls. However, such tiles are very tricky - they can visually conceal the space of an already small bathroom. Therefore, it is better to combine mosaics with medium-sized tiles.

Choice of tiles depending on the type of house

For Khrushchev

Most often, Khrushchev houses have a combined bathroom (the bathroom is combined with a toilet), so the space is very limited and cramped - about 3 sq.m. Because of this, in Khrushchev, it is better to give preference to light, medium-sized tiles, without large drawings. The combination of two tile colors - light in the upper part of the walls and dark in the lower one - will visually increase the height in such a bath.

For a panel house

In a panel house, a bath and a toilet can be combined, but as a rule, not. it can be the same as the bathroom, or it can be in contrasting shades. It's a matter of taste. But the size is better to choose both there and there the same, so that the premises are in harmony with each other.

For a private house

A private house, built according to an individual plan, assumes that you yourself determine the size of the future premises. Therefore, the bathroom here can be made spacious and light. This will allow even large tiles to be used for wall decoration without compromising the visual perception of the space. It is better to use porcelain stoneware for the floor, since temperature drops can occur not only inside the room, but also outside.

The nuances of finishing a bathroom with a small area

1. Medium-sized tiles are considered optimal for decorating walls. It does not seem bulky and does not ripple with a huge number of joints as in the case of using a small tile. Mosaic can be used, but only as a separate element.

The bathroom should be warm and comfortable, so cold shades will make the bathroom uncomfortable.

2. For a small area, it is better to use light tiles in warm colors. Dark colors will make an already small bathroom look tiny. For decoration, choose small elements with patterns to create accents. Bulky and large images on several tiles will draw attention to themselves.

3. It is better to lay tiles on walls vertically in order to visually raise the ceilings. But on the floor, on the contrary, it is worth using diagonal styling.

4. Embossed tiles will clutter up the space, so smooth glazed tiles will look more appropriate in a small bathroom. On matte tiles, limescale from water is less noticeable, however, due to the absence of glare, the space will be hidden.

For a stunning effect of visual expansion of space in a small bathroom, use special mirror tiles.

5. It is better to refuse from creating niches with tiles in a small bathroom.

Choosing a color

When choosing the color of your bathroom tiles, consider the quality of the lighting. The less light, the lighter the color of the walls should be.

White

White color - looks stylish. However, white tiles can evoke the feeling of a hospital room, making the room feel cold and uncomfortable. In addition, any dirt is noticeable on white surfaces and so that the bathroom does not lose its appearance, it will have to be cleaned very often. On the other hand, well-chosen and a few bright accents will make your bathroom in white a piece of taste and sophistication.

Blue

Blue and cyan are the colors of water. Therefore, in the design of bathrooms they are used quite often. When using these colors, the bathroom can be themed, for this you need to add only a few nautical motifs: shells, fish or boats. Manufacturers take this into account and in each new collection you can find new items on the marine theme. If the bathroom is small, the borders with the image of sinks or sailboats will be enough for your bathtub to acquire the charm of the coast.

Green

An alternative to blue is green. This is the color of calmness and regularity, it does not irritate, on the contrary, it gives spiritual harmony. And if you want a little mischief - hang a curtain with frogs in the bathroom! And the color will be sustained, and a cheerful accent will appear.

Alternative options

Floral motifs are often used to decorate tiles. Within the purple palette, it can be violets or lavender. Combinations of purple tiles with pistachio or peach accents will look good.

The warmest bathroom in the world is yellow. It is the color of the sun and summer. Even in the cold winter, you will not freeze in the yellow bathroom! Along with yellow, orange can be used for the same result.

A pink bathroom will surely appeal to young girls. But a red or black bathroom will be appreciated by confident men.

DIY bathroom decoration

The prices for the services of professional tile laying are quite high. But with a strong desire, you can cope on your own. Here's what to remember when decorating a bathroom with your own tiles:

  • The surface must be completely cleaned before tiling.
  • The bathroom floor can be leveled, but it is better to make it at a slight angle towards the center of the bathroom - in case of leaks, it will be easier to wipe the water out than somewhere behind the bathroom.
  • The adhesive solution must be prepared strictly according to the attached instructions.
  • To prevent the tiles from slipping, the adhesive solution is applied in a thin layer. With the help of a special spatula or knitting needle, it is necessary to make grooves on it.
  • To make the tile joints the same size, special plastic crosses are inserted between the tiles.
  • It is better to start laying out the tiles from the corner of the bathroom, which is opposite the door - in this case, the places where the tiles had to be cut will not be so striking.
  • If you apply the markings on the walls in advance, you can calculate the places where the tiles will have to be cut and laid out in pieces in the lower row, while the upper one - in whole tiles.

A bathroom is an intimate room, as a result of which it must have certain characteristics: simplicity, originality and, most importantly, convenience. The most important components of these qualities are floor and wall finishing. There are many options here, however, the tile finishing option has become the most proven one.

Tile characteristics

Having decided on the choice of finishing the bathroom, when buying a tile, you should take into account the characteristics:

  • technical standards (here we mean a class of wear resistance from 1 to 5, and for bathrooms you should stay no lower than the 3rd class);
  • the purpose of the tile;
  • coverage parameters.

Tile types by purpose

In a broad sense, tiles are used for walls or floors, but in some cases the task of choosing tiles for steps and ceilings appears. Yet, according to their characteristics, only two types stand out - for walls and floors. Wall tiles are less resistant to chemicals and abrasion of the surface layer; they also have a fairly high level of moisture absorption - up to 20%. The coating of this type of tile can be in the form of glaze, matte, embossed and imitation of other materials.

Floor tiles, firstly, are stronger than wall tiles; secondly, it has a low level of moisture absorption - up to 5-6%; thirdly, the surface of the tiles is always made in a matte anti-slip version.

Materials (edit)

Depending on the materials used for the production of tiles, 4 types of tiles can be distinguished:

- ceramic tile. The cheapest, but this does not mean that its appearance has any flaws. Simply by its technical characteristics, it may be inferior to other types of materials;

- porcelain stoneware. A material similar to natural stone, but less prone to breaking and splitting. Its composition is close to porcelain. Differs in moisture resistance close to zero, is not afraid of frosts and sudden temperature changes. Most often used for flooring;

- a natural stone. With the development of technologies for processing building materials, this type of tile has become more in demand due to a decrease in price. A pure natural material, however, inferior in wear resistance to porcelain stoneware. It is also more susceptible to the development of various bacteria on the surface;

- glass tiles. The most expensive pleasure from the presented range, capable of embodying the wildest fantasies in the interior of the bathroom. This type of tile can be used not only for walls and floors, but also for decoration.

Color palette

When choosing the colors of the tiles for the bathroom, there is basically one important point to consider - the lighting of the room. The darker the room, the lighter the tiles you need to pick up. Designers identify several of the most successful color palettes for the bathroom:

White and black tones

This choice is for connoisseurs of style. These colors are always fashionable - they are classics. When combined with pure white and black with any accent, you can create a pleasant sense of sophistication in design. However, it should be borne in mind that white can cause a feeling of coldness and lack of comfort, which is why special attention should be paid to accent walls. In addition, plain tiles should be cleaned (wash, wipe) quite often, since even the smallest dirt, soap spots or streaks are visible on it.

Blue and green tones

These colors are leaders in the design of bathrooms. Blue is the color of water and is perfect for a bathroom like no other. Green - does not irritate, soothes and harmonizes the internal state. However, here one should not forget about the accent: various fish, shells or boats in blue design or bright frogs in green will add taste to the overall design of the room.

Successful alternative color palettes

Floral tones will look pretty aesthetically pleasing. Purple or peach palette, pink palette - for young girls, red tones - for confident adult women and men. If you are constantly freezing, then yellow is the best choice. It is the color of warmth, summer and sun. In such a room you will not freeze even on a frosty winter day.

Tile size and shape

Despite the huge variety of color style options and materials for tiles, the choice of tile size and its shape is not the last place in the decoration. According to the size classification, standard tiles, large, small and mosaics can be distinguished.

The size of a standard tile is 20 by 30 cm, therefore, the one that is larger than this size is large, and the smaller one is small. Also, a mosaic is distinguished, which is in the size of a square with a facet of 2-3 cm.

Finishing nuances

For finishing the bathroom, the most optimal choice will be the choice of medium-sized tiles - it will not seem too bulky, and on the other hand, there will not be a lot of distracting joints.

The bathroom should be comfortable, warm and cozy, so more attention should be paid to light, warm colors when choosing colors. To visually enlarge a small room, it is recommended to use tiles with a reflective glazed surface or mirror tiles.

An important point when laying tiles is its orientation: to visually increase the height of the room, you need to focus on the vertical installation option. It is more profitable to lay the floors diagonally to increase the space.

Zoning

To give originality to the cladding of the room, you can use some kind of zoning or covering certain parts of the room with tiles. There are three options depending on the area to be covered:

  • tiling the entire room;
  • facing up to a certain point. In order to save money, some apartment owners tile the room half the height;
  • finishing of contact areas. For example, areas above the sink or bath.

It should be borne in mind that in the conditions of small, compact rooms, only the first two options are suitable for decoration, since when using the third option, individual fragments may visually merge and a "heap effect" will develop. For spacious rooms, any of the three options will do.

Classic bathroom

The choice of the classic style shows the aristocracy of the landlord. To give the style of classicism in the interior of the bathroom, the decoration of the walls with tiles is not enough - here you need a combination with marble and onyx. An important point will be the presence of antique furniture, combined with tiles. Particular attention should be paid to small details, using the same tiles on the border with small details or decor in the form of bronze elements. You need to understand that this style is suitable exclusively for spacious, high rooms.

Minimalism style

The very name of the style suggests that everything in this room should be used to a minimum. In the decoration of walls, ceilings and floors, no more than 2-3 colors should be used, and in the same tone. There should be a minimum of furniture, so the walls should be finished perfectly, simply and at the same time original. As a result of applying this style, additional territory will be freed up in the room, the room will become more spacious and comfortable.

Country style

Recently, more and more homeowners prefer country-style interior design. This style combines the use of natural materials (or imitations), and natural colors. The tiles can be matched to wood or stone. Better to stay on brown, coffee, beige and green shades. Particular attention should be paid to accessories that should be combined with the decoration of walls and ceilings.

Decorating a small bathroom

The main factor when designing a small room is to visually increase the space. For this, there are certain techniques developed by designers and their experience:

  • colors in the design should be light colors;
  • for a rectangular room, it is better to select a tile size of no more than 20x30 cm, for square rooms - 20x20 cm;
  • to visually increase the height, the tiles must be laid vertically, to increase the width - horizontally;
  • it is not recommended to use embossed tiles - it visually reduces the space;
  • the surface of the tile should be glossy, glazed or glassy, but in no case matte. Gloss will visually enlarge the room, matte surface will reduce it.

Tiles in a spacious bathroom

If you are the owner of a large bathroom, then the restrictions applied to the design of small rooms are automatically discarded and you are free in your decisions and design delights. Here the play of colors, shapes, materials and accent elements is limited only by your imagination. However, in this case, you can overdo it and the room will become too colorful, and the decoration itself will "crush", as a result, the room will become uncomfortable, and one of the determining factors for a successful bathroom design is convenience, coziness and comfort.

As a result of applying the above tips and tricks for decorating a bathroom, you can create a cozy comfortable environment in your room, which will be distinguished by the originality of the design and the functional convenience of each element, which are the most important components in the interior design process.
