Icon “All-Blessed Mother of God. Icon of the Mother of God "All-Blessed" Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Akathist

In 1904, the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was sacrilegiously stolen from the Cathedral of the Mother of God Kazan Convent. This event was a great loss for all Orthodox believers, all pious Christians. A year after this, in 1905, Joachim III, His Holiness the Patriarch of Constantinople, sent another icon to Kazan. Having learned about what had happened, the patriarch was so upset that, for the sake of consolation and blessing, he sent to Kazan an exact copy of the “All-Blessed” icon, otherwise called “Pammakarista,” which was kept in the Constantinople Church by the patriarch and was honored and protected with special care and zeal. This revered icon was an ancient and most valuable shrine, which by some miracle survived in the city of Constantinople, after the temple erected in honor of the holy Great Martyr George was plundered many times.

The holy image of the Mother of God is written on an ordinary wooden board; it was created in the traditions inherent in ancient Greek icon painting. On the reverse side of the icon the following words were written in Greek: “Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome by the grace of God, to the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Ladoga and St. Petersburg, Mr. Anthony, Primate of the Holy Russian Synod. Most Reverend brother in Christ! We were struck to the depths of our hearts by the terrible, hitherto unheard of sacrilegious abduction of the holy Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Wanting to give pious Christians a little consolation in this irreparable loss, we were ordered to write an exact, type and size copy of the lost icon of the “All-Blessed” Mother of God, which is revered by everyone in the Patriarchal Church of St. George the Victorious, the only one that remains with us from many plunders; We are sending you this list instead of the stolen treasure, if you deign to accept.”

The Kazan Women's Monastery of the Mother of God received the icon of the All-Blessed Mother of God with honors and gratitude. In Constantinople, the celebration of the icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed” was established on September 1. And following the example of the Church of Constantinople, the celebration in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “All-Blessed”, which resides in the Kazan Mother of God Convent, was also established on the same day.

The icon "Pammakarista" - "All-Blessed" - is especially revered in the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The temple in which it is kept is also named in her honor - the temple of the “All-Blessed”; Since 1455, this temple has been the residence of the Patriarchs of Constantinople. This icon is made in the style of ancient mosaic work. In the Greek Typicon published in 1838, the icon is referred to as miraculous. Since 1601, the icon has been on the Lantern, at the Church of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.

Every year many pilgrims flock to venerate the miraculous icon in order to ask the Mother of God for a miracle, blessing, and healing.

On September 1/14, on the day of the church new year, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called the Pammakarista or “All-Blessed” (to be more precise, “The Most Blessed,” but the “All-Blessed” version has taken root and has become widespread).

The fate of this miraculous icon is amazing and directly connected with Kazan. The history of the appearance of this icon in our city is as follows. After the unheard of sacrilege - the theft of the first-revealed image of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in 1904, the news of this tragic event spread not only throughout Russia, but also beyond its borders, and became known throughout the Orthodox world, which speaks of a truly universal veneration of the Kazan miraculous image .

Patriarch Joachim III of Constantinople, a longtime friend of Russia, who did a lot to bring the Russian Church closer to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, warmly took to heart the loss of this shrine. In order to bring at least some consolation to the residents of the city of Kazan, he ordered to write an exact copy of the icon of Our Lady of Pammakarista located in the Constantinople Patriarchal Church of the Holy Great Martyr George - the most revered ancient icon that remained in Constantinople after many lootings and devastations of the city.

Patriarch Joachim III

In 1905, Patriarch Joachim handed over this icon to St. Petersburg - Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Anthony (Vadkovsky), the first-present member of the Holy Synod, a former inspector and associate professor of the Kazan Theological Academy, with a request to send it as a gift.

For Metropolitan Anthony, Kazan was his hometown, where an important part of his life passed. In 1866, Alexander Vasilyevich Vadkovsky, a graduate of the Tambov Theological Seminary, came to Kazan to enter the Theological Academy, which he successfully graduated from in 1870 and was left as a teacher at the department of pastoral theology and homiletics. In 1872, at the age of 26, he married Elizaveta Penkovskaya. This was a very extraordinary act, since his bride was seriously ill with tuberculosis. The young couple had two children.

However, after a few years, the family idyll collapsed - first, Elizaveta Vadkovskaya died in 1879, and in 1882, one after another, their young daughters died. A young scientist, state councilor, who had a successful career, could have married a second time, but he chooses for himself a different path of serving God and the Church.

Metropolitan Anthony (Vadkovsky)

On March 4, 1883, Alexander Vadkovsky was tonsured a monk by Archbishop Palladius (Raev) of Kazan and Sviyazhsk with the name Anthony, on March 6 he was ordained a hieromonk, and on November 14 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite and appointed administrator of Kazan.

On November 8, 1884, he became an inspector of the Kazan Theological Academy, after which his church career rapidly went up. Over the next 16 years, he held the positions of inspector of the Moscow and St. Petersburg Theological Academies, rector of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, in 1887 he was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg, vicar of the St. Petersburg diocese, in 1892 he was appointed to an independent Finnish See and became present in Holy Synod, in 1898 he was appointed Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga and a member of the Holy Synod, and from 1900 until his death in 1912 he was the first-present member of the Holy Synod.

Even holding the highest position in the church hierarchy, Metropolitan Anthony always recalled with warmth Kazan, where his life took such a sharp and unexpected turn, so it is not surprising that the image of the Mother of God “Pammakarista”, painted at the behest of Patriarch Joachim, was immediately transferred to Kazan. Bogoroditsky Monastery.

Kazan-Bogoroditsky Monastery

As a sign of gratitude for the valuable gift transferred to Russia, as well as in recognition of his merits and authority as an Orthodox theologian and church leader, Patriarch Joachim III in 1905 was elected an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

The Pammakarista icon of the Mother of God sent to Kazan was painted on a wooden board in the traditions of ancient Greek icon painting. Since the original icon is made of mosaic, the listing reflects the mosaic structure of the original; its dimensions are 93 centimeters in height and 63 centimeters in width.

In Russia, the icon of the Mother of God Pammakarista was received with great honors, actually took the place of the stolen shrine and became famous for numerous miracles. In those days, newspapers wrote: “This icon somewhat compensated for the loss of the miraculous revealed icon suffered by the monastery and the Orthodox residents of the city of Kazan.” This precious gift of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Russia began to be called in Russian - the All-Blessed.

On the day of the celebration of the memory of this icon, many pilgrims flocked to Kazan, prayers were constantly served in front of it and akathists were performed, pilgrims reverently venerated the image of the Pammakarista. In front of this miraculous face, people prayed for peace and happiness in the family circle, for protection from troubles and misfortunes, for consolation in sorrows. In a very short time, the icon became one of the most famous and revered images of the Mother of God in Russia.

Icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed”

The Icon of the Mother of God of Pammakarista was in the Kazan-Bogoroditsky Monastery until its closure, and then was transferred to the Peter and Paul Cathedral. But after the closure of this temple, traces of the miraculous image were considered lost. For some reason, it was not moved to the Church of the Yaroslavl Wonderworkers, like many other shrines of Kazan, and since the 30s of the last century, Orthodox believers knew nothing about the fate of the Pammakarista. In the St. Nicholas Cathedral of Kazan, only a copy of the miraculous image has been preserved.

For many years, researchers of the church history of Kazan have not given up attempts to find it in Russian and foreign museums or in private collections. And only recently luck smiled upon them - the icon was found very close to the place from where it disappeared during the years of the fight against God. The casket simply opened - all this time the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed” was in the collections of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and was kept there, as they say, classified as “secret”. Not only was it not exhibited as part of the permanent exhibition, but it was never even presented at exhibitions at which many objects of church art stored in the museum’s storerooms were displayed.

And only last year - during the filming of the documentary film “First Appearance” about the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, researchers for the first time had the opportunity to see and capture with their own eyes the miraculous image of the “All-Blessed”. On the reverse side of the icon there is a dedicatory inscription from Patriarch Joachim of Constantinople, which reads: “Joachim, by the grace of God, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch, to the Most Reverend and Most Honorable Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga and Primate of the Holy Synod of Russia, Mr. Anthony. Most Reverend brother in Christ! And we were struck to the depths of our hearts by the terrible and unheard of sacrilegious abduction of the holy Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Therefore, wishing on our part to provide pious Christians with some consolation in their irreparable loss, we ordered to write a copy, faithful in all respects in appearance and size, from the icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed”, located in the Patriarchal Church of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious, revered by all, - the only , remaining to us from various plunders and the anciently revered icon of the patriarchal church; which list we are sending to be placed, if you deign, in place of the stolen, sacred and revered treasure. May the Lord our Savior, through the prayers of His Mother, overshadow and protect His pious people with all grace and mercy. Written at the Patriarchate on May 29, 1905.”

Today we are publishing these photographs with the dedicatory inscription of Patriarch Joachim in Greek - there is no doubt, before us is the holy miraculous image of the “All-Blessed” Mother of God (“Pammakarists”). It remains to express the hope that in the near future this shrine will be transferred to its rightful owner - the Kazan diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

On September 14, the Orthodox Church celebrates in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called the “All-Blessed” - an image especially revered by the believers of Kazan.

The icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called the “All-Blessed”, or “Pamakarista”, was sent in 1905 by His Holiness Patriarch Joachim III of Constantinople as a blessing and consolation to the city of Kazan after the sacrilegious abduction of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God from the cathedral church of the Kazan Mother of God Convent on the night of June 28-29 1904. This icon is an exact copy of the especially revered icon of the “All-Blessed” Mother of God, located in the Patriarchal Church of Constantinople, the only ancient shrine that survived in Constantinople, in the temple in the name of the Holy Great Martyr George, after numerous plunders.

The holy image was painted on a wooden board in the tradition of ancient Greek icon painting. On the reverse side are the words written in Greek: “ Joachim, by the grace of God, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and the Ecumenical Patriarch, to the Most Reverend and Most Honorable Metropolitan of St. Therefore, wishing on our part to provide pious Christians with some consolation in their irreparable loss, we ordered the writing of a copy, faithful in appearance and size, to the icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed,” located in the Patriarchal Church of St. the Great Martyr George the Victorious, the only one remaining from various plunders, and the anciently revered icon of the patriarchal church; which list we are sending to be placed, if you deign, in place of the stolen, sacred and revered treasure. May the Lord our Savior, through the prayers of His Mother, overshadow and protect His pious people with all grace and mercy».

The celebration in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God “Pamakarista” on September 1 was established by Patriarch Joachim. Following the example of the Church of Constantinople, the celebration of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “All-Blessed”, located in the Kazan Mother of God Convent, was also established on this day.

During the years of Soviet power, the icon of the Mother of God “All-Blessed” was also irretrievably lost - only one of its copies has survived, which now resides in the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the city.

Canons and Akathists

Canon of the Most Holy Theotokos in front of the All-Blessed Icon

Song 1

Irmos: Let us all sing a song of victory to God, who performed wondrous miracles with his high arm and saved Israel, as if he were glorified.

Today the rise of the All-Immaculate Virgin is a triumph; come, you idle lovers, let us joyfully sing this with harmonious songs and singing.

We perform the divine and all-immaculate triumph of the Mother of God, with the help of the priest, the wisdom of God, with splashing light with our hands, and with divine hymns we honor in spirit.

Pure, All-Blessed, All-Honorable Young Lady, we joyfully celebrate Your bright triumph, We honor Your greatness with reverent thoughts, faithfulness, and all.

Mary, All-Singing, Virgin Mary, we brightly celebrate Your all-honorable memory, with a cheerful soul we now reverently sing Your glory.

Song 3

Irmos: May my heart be established in Thy will, O Christ God, who established the second heaven above the waters and founded the earth on the waters, Omnipotent.

Fulfilling the eternal promise, O All-Immaculate Youth, and from a barren mother, like a flower, having grown, you bestowed unspeakable joy on all mortals.

At Thy Nativity, Thy parents, the Youth, the praiseworthy Joachim and the all-honorable Anna, rejoiced in the honor of Thy parents, bringing Thee to God, faithfully.

The priest and prophet Zechariah received You inside the altar, while the luminous virgins flowed brightly to the Creator, singing a song of thanksgiving.

Brought up in the Holy of Holies, the All-Immaculate Youth, you remained all pure, and holy, and undefiled, for you received Heavenly food from the Angel.

Song 4

Irmos: Having foreseen by the Spirit, you prophesied to Habakkuk, the Word incarnate, and preached, crying out: when you approach in the summer, you will become known; when the time comes, you will appear. Glory to Your power, Lord.

An Archangel was sent quickly from the heights of Heaven, preaching a terrible mystery, but in Your womb you unspeakably reviled and gave birth to the Creator of all, You saved man, O Lady.

The Brideless Virgin, the Honest Dove, you gave birth to the God of the Word without beginning on earth, and before the Nativity the Virgin shone forth, after the Nativity she was truly sanctified, Mary the Bride of God.

You came to the land of Egypt, O Honest One, and you were a witness of terrible miracles, and you saw Your Son hanged on a Tree and saw Thy Son imprisoned in a new tomb, resurrected for three days.

Like an animated cloud and a pillar of light, you showed us the Light-Giver of the Sun, and you reposed in Heaven, Blessed One, adorned in gilded beauty, the glory of the Angels, the All-Queen.

Song 5

Irmos: Give us Your peace, Son of God: otherwise, do we not know You as God? We call Your name, for You are the God of the living and the dead.

Thy Son, O All-Honourable One, has given to the faithful an image not made by hands, but You, O All-Blessed Virgin, have left Thy holy icon of the world.

You have covered your most pure icon, Mother of God, with divine graces, and you have placed this in the queen of cities, the Queen of the Divine Angels.

Your divine icon and honorable, All-Blessed One, having passed through many all-honorable temples, was glorified to dwell in the divine temple of the glorious Victorious.

Your all-honorable icon, Most Pure Virgin, is the praise of the reigning city and richly pours out Your abundant grace to those who come running with faith.

Song 6

Irmos: Imitating the Prophet Jonah, I cry: my belly, O Good One, free me from aphids and save me, Savior of the world, calling: glory to Thee.

The Prophet, having prayed, freed himself from corruption, but we, kissing Your icon, Honest Bride of God, are delivered from terrible troubles by faith.

We celebrate Your bright and honest holiday and draw from the mental sources of the river, All-Singing, We kiss Your icon.

The inexhaustible source of sacred gifts is shown by the all-pure icon of Your face, the All-Undefiled, sending grace to the whole world.

Your Holy Icon, All-Blessed, Pure, Great and Honest, the brilliance of the Church of Christ is greatness and adornment.

Kontakion, tone 4

On Your feast day, the sacred celebration of Yours, O Lady, we celebrate today with all reverence, and with love we honor Your honorable icon. We all sing to You in joy: Rejoice, Honest and All-Blessed Virgin.

Ikos

Before the century, clearly chosen from God and the Mother of all the Kings, who overlaid His invisible Image with flesh, and indescribably depicted the darkened image of Adam, and by the Divine power killed the chief of darkness, and the Chosen Voivode appeared, guard this city and save the people of Christ, the Mother of God, Thy icon those who honor and cry out to You for warmth: Rejoice, Honest Virgin, All-Blessed.

Song 7

Irmos: Let us consider the cave of You, the intelligent Mother of God, faithful, just as You saved the three youths, the Exalted One, renew the world, in Your womb is wholly whole, the God of praise of the fathers and glorified.

Having previously had the ark of the God-given tabernacle of the meeting, Solomon’s temple was inherited, like a Divine adornment; Your image, O Virgin, possesses, the Church of Christ rejoices brightly.

In ancient times, playing, the Godfather galloped in front of the hay ark; At the name of Christ, people boast, venerating, like the ark of a shrine, Your all-honorable icon, O All-Blessed One, in the Church of Christ.

The evil-minded iconoclasts threw icons into the fierce fire, but Theodora, the queen of others, raised them up as a victorious sign of piety; The faithful are now kissing Your sacred icon, O Honest, All-Blessed One.

Mother Immaculate, All-Pure Mother of God, let us be enriched by the faithful image of Your face, which is truly a valuable treasure, for we, with faith in honoring Your icon, honor the Primordial.

Song 8

Irmos: The Angels and all the hosts are terrified of Him, as the Creator and Lord; sing, O priests, glorify, O youths; bless, O men, and exalt Him unto all ages.

Laughing at the image of the wicked ruler, the youths got rid of the furnace and flame, but we, by honoring Your honorable icon, get rid of all sorts of troubles, Mother of God.

The Tsar Leo adamantly forbade people to worship the icon with a terrible command. But You, Pure One, give to the faithful the treasure of Your face, the Virgin, the all-honorable icon.

The chosen fighters for the Divine icons have endured the grief of severe torments, but those who honor Your honest image, O Virgin, are saved from all troubles.

The images and idols of the service of the wicked have disappeared with corruption, and now we reverently glorify all Your icon, Most Pure Virgin, throughout all ages.

Song 9

Irmos: The luminous cloud, the Lord of all, like rain from heaven on the fleece, descended and incarnated for our sake, having become Man, the Beginningless, we magnify all as the Pure Mother of our God.

Like a radiant day and the Mother of Light, you emit all-bright rays of salvation to everyone; For this reason, for Thy sake, All-Pure One, now, in singing, reverently, brightly having fun, with all the faithful, we celebrate Thy honorable holiday.

The most luminous Angel and the highest Cherub, and the most expansive of Heaven, and the Virgin Mother, truly glorifying, and magnifying Thee, the All-Immaculate One, more honorably than Thy icon, we piously worship with love.

To the sacred image of Your all-pure face, Pure One, All-Blessed One, piously falling, honorably, the Patriarchs and all the clergy, and the faces of the virgins, and people, we bow and glorify all the Creator.

The God-bearing apostles, burying Your body, anointing the world with pure aromas of old, reverently venerate Your icon, the Pure Virgin, the All-Tsarina, the Angels, standing invisibly, with divine songs.

Trinity: Formerly this century, Creator of all, God, the Originless Father, Son and Soul, One true Divinity, Consubstantial and Co-Altaral with the Trinity, protect Thy faithful people with the prayers of the All-Pure One.

Let us glorify, O Virgin, Your incorruptible Nativity and piously venerate Your most honorable icon, so that we may be delivered from temptations and may always receive the grace that exists; For this reason, cover with Your prayers, protect those who trust in You.

Svetilen

We sing to You angelically, O Virgin Mother of God, for You gave birth to Christ, the Savior of the world. Because you have the most maternal boldness towards Him, unceasingly pray with all the saints for us, who celebrate Your triumph and worship more honorably Your icon, All-Pure One.
