How to glue the furniture with self-adhesive. Not sure how to update an old cabinet? Budget ways

Over time, many may want to update their interior. After all, no matter how high-quality and expensive the furniture may be, it can just get bored. But buying new interior items, changing a good cupboard or table is an expensive and even useless affair. We'll have to look for ways to get rid of existing furniture that has not yet served its term. The solution to this problem may be to use a self-adhesive film. It will definitely help you change the interior beyond recognition and allow it to sparkle with new colors. The main thing in these transformations is to know how to paste furniture over the furniture so that it remains natural and neatly decorated.

Read below:

Why is it worth using a self-adhesive film?

If you still doubt the decision to use self-adhesive, think about the advantages that it has:

  • good resistance to aggressive environmental influences;
  • long service life;
  • high color rendering quality;
  • a large assortment of colors and decor (one-color, multi-color, film with imitation of wood, marble, volumetric, mirror and others).

How to paste over furniture?

High-quality pasting of furniture consists of several stages.

First you need to measure the surface on which you are going to glue the film everywhere. It is usually sold in rolls of various lengths and therefore, after making measurements, you can choose which option will have the least number of joints. Only in this case, pasting furniture with a self-adhesive film will be almost invisible and aesthetic, and the process itself will not add you any extra trouble.

Many people are concerned about the question of how to cover furniture with a self-adhesive film so that it does not reveal itself and does not emphasize any irregularities on the surface. To do this, you must correctly perform the second stage.

Make the adhesive surface perfectly flat and smooth. Firstly, you need to thoroughly clean it from dirt with a detergent and a sponge for washing dishes. After this, it is important to remove all the fittings, as it will be an additional obstacle during gluing. If you notice irregularities on the furniture, they can be removed using putty and sanding sandpaper. If your furniture is made of wood but not varnished, it can be greased with acrylic primer.

Draw the necessary details on the reverse side of the film and apply the dimensions of the surface to be glued. You can cut the required canvas size and details with a paint knife or scissors.

Note! A centimeter marking has already been applied to the back of the film. This will make your marking more accurate and convenient.

To prevent bubbles from appearing on the glued surface, it is important to perform the following steps. Pour water into the spray gun and moisten the piece of furniture that you will be pasting. After this procedure, when glued, the film will be movable, and you can adjust its position on the furniture. In addition, in the event of a bubble, you can easily smooth it. If you still could not avoid the appearance of bubbles on the surface of the film, pierce them with a needle and flatten with a clean towel.

Advice! In the event of such irregularities, in no case do not postpone their removal and correction until later. Just a couple of hours after gluing the film, you will not remove it without tears and damage.

At this stage, the film is sticker on the surface. In order to do this correctly, separate the film from the paper at a distance of 8 cm from the edge. Attach it to the surface and use a dry cloth or small towel to start smoothing it to the edges. If a wrinkle or bubble has formed, sticking in this direction will allow you to easily remove them, as described in the previous paragraph. You can also try pulling the film over the edge, peeling it off a little and then leveling the surface.

By the way! If you have chosen a film with a pattern or imitation of tile, stone or wood, it is important not to forget about docking on it.

Self-adhesive tape when updating doors

Very often, self-adhesive film is practically used to update the appearance of doors. But this part of the interior has its own characteristics, which must be taken into account both directly in the preparation and in the process of gluing itself.

So, how to glue the doors with self-adhesive quality and without any extra effort? It is important to properly prepare the surface.

  1. Clean the door of dirt and grease. If there is paint on it or its remains, be sure to sand the canvas with a hard, and then fine sandpaper. Make sure that there are no scratches on it. When this work is done, wipe the door with a damp towel and then a soap solution. Doors made of chipboard or plywood can be additionally treated with an acrylic-based primer. After it dries, you need to sand the surface again.
  2. Remove the gluing door from the hinges and plan the ends and the surface around the hinges with a planer. Place the door on the hinges and close. The distance between the self-adhesive and the door frame should be up to 2 mm. This will prevent the film from erasing when opening and closing doors.
  3. Glue the door, separating approximately 20 cm of film and smoothing it on the surface. You can start work from the end, bending the film 2 cm to the door, and then glue the main part, adjusting the film to the previously bent edge.

How to care for a glued surface?

Furniture with a self-adhesive film can only be washed with a soft sponge and detergent. Do not use substances that are considered aggressive, containing alcohol, etc. Also, do not use hard sponges or brushes. This cleaning option can damage both the material itself and the pattern or color applied to it. Despite its strength and resistance to external factors, such an effect on the film can be fatal.

Often there is a need to refresh the interior, give the old look to the old furniture or increase the life of the new one, protect doors and window sills from external factors. An obstacle to the realization of such a desire may be a banal lack of time or finance.

To make repairs and extend the life of things dear to the heart cheaply and in the shortest possible time will allow a self-adhesive film for furniture, striking a wide range of applications.

What is a self-adhesive film for furniture

Among the variety of materials that open up access to the embodiment of bold design solutions, manufacturers on the market have an impressive range of films with an adhesive base. Products of this category are on sale in the form of rolls of various widths.

The structure of any type of film is three layers. These are:

  • Facial;
  • Glue;
  • Protective.

Depending on the raw materials used in the manufacture of products, the surface layer can be made of:

  • Polymer film;
  • Metallized foil;
  • Papers.

The layer intended to fix the finishing material on the surfaces, most often happens:

  • Rubber;
  • Acrylic.

The function of protecting the adhesive surface is realized by using siliconized paper that is removed directly during operation.

There are also various technologies for the production of polymer material. Depending on the equipment used by manufacturers, the film sold on the market can be one of the following types:

  • Calendered;
  • Injection.

The latter is more convenient in work, more durable, capable of retaining its former appearance longer, opens up wider possibilities of application. This is due to the inability of calendared films to stretch upon cooling, which implies their gluing only on smooth, even surfaces.

The ability of molding materials to stretch without the use of heat treatment opens up access to the finish of rough, having protrusions in the form of self-tapping screws and rivets, corrugated surfaces. Lack of shrinkage is also one of the advantages of cast films over calendered films, which can “shrink” over time.

Application benefits

  • Universality;
  • Low cost;
  • Easy fixation on the surface, minimum repair time, no need to hire a team of workers;
  • Ease of cleaning;
  • Resistance to moisture;
  • The abundance of textures and shades.

A common option for interior decoration is becoming.

Self-adhesive Film Selection Criteria

Wanting to purchase a film in order to refresh furniture, a door, a kitchen or other elements of an apartment, it is worth considering a number of criteria for choosing a product. You need to take into account:

  • Film quality;
  • The condition of future glued surfaces;
  • Probability of damage;
  • Aesthetics.

Quality

The first thing you should pay attention to when making a purchase is the quality of the goods. The modern market is saturated with self-adhesive films for furniture made of polyethylene. The service life of the finishing layer of such a material leaves much to be desired, and giving preference to a product with a polymer layer, it is better to stop choosing PVC.

An additional protective layer of ultraviolet stabilization is an important element that prolongs the life of the film. The cost of the goods will be slightly more expensive, but the money spent will more than pay off due to the ability of the material to withstand the effects of sunlight.

Many models of these products are considered universal. However, assuming the decoration of objects placed in the bathroom or in the kitchen, it is worth giving preference to a moisture-resistant film. Wall sections near appliances in the form of a heater, boiler or stove should be glued using thermally stable products.

Condition of surfaces to be trimmed

Deformation of old unstable furniture can cause tears and peeling of the film. Therefore, in order to refresh the subject of heirloom, serving faithfully for many years, it is advisable to use material made by injection molding. Apply a film of this configuration is also for gluing on the surface, with protruding screws and rivets.

On stable, without roughness and protrusions areas you can stick a film made of metallized foil. In areas with frequent contact with other objects in the children's room, this material is not practical. Otherwise, scratches and damage are inevitable.

Serves as a special place for an apartment. In the kitchen, the housewives cook, gather with the whole family, discuss household moments and relax with a cup of coffee. But there comes a time when a person has a desire to change something, refresh a repair or give a new color to an old kitchen set.

But not everyone has the opportunity to acquire a new one. Therefore, you can “update” kitchen furniture using a new decorating technique called decoupage.

Decoupage is done using the following materials:

Any improvised materials are used to decorate furniture and space. allows you to transform the kitchen, change the style of the interior, add variety to the design and refresh the kitchen. How to update with your own hands? We learn by reading the article.

Do-it-yourself replacement of facades and doors as one of the options for updating a kitchen set

You can update the kitchen with a replacement. Facades are called doors, cabinets and all related accessories. to the old ones, you will give the kitchen a new look that will not distinguish the old kitchen set from the changed one.

In order to update the old cabinet with your own hands, you will initially need to remove the doors from it, unscrew the kitchen handles from the hinges. Next, put new facades on the same places. New facade parts are sold ready-made or ordered to order. It all depends on the wishes of the hostess and the size of the kitchen.

Better to purchase machined parts. When buying unprocessed facades, you will need to spend a lot of time cleaning and painting them.

Replacement of facades is mainly done in the case when they are broken.

If the old facades are in “working” condition, then the updating technique using improvised tools is used to update them.

DIY decoupage at home is created using improvised materials. Common decoupage is paper, paint, and vinyl.

Self-adhesive vinyl finish: updating the old headset and marble countertops and more

Refresh the kitchen, even a person who does not have skills in decoupage. The main thing that is required in order to update the kitchen with a self-adhesive film is desire. Initially, a color and pattern are selected that are similar in style to the interior of the room. Self-adhesive film is sold in hardware stores at an affordable price. Therefore, updating the kitchen will not incur significant financial costs.

Self-adhesive film made of vinyl. This material is moisture resistant, protects furniture from water and hot temperatures, as a result of which the life of the furniture is extended. The range of drawings, ornaments and flowers is diverse. You can choose a film with a pattern of stone, wood or just an ornament. It all depends on the wishes of the hostess and the general. Possibility of choice is another plus of the self-adhesive film.

For decoration, the following materials are prepared:

    Vinyl film for pasting furniture.

  • Centimeter.

  • Building scraper.

To do it yourself do measurements of furniture with a ruler or centimeter. For convenience, the facades are removed and removed from the cabinets.

To update the kitchen, all surfaces are prepared according to the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Handles are twisted from the removed doors.
  2. All surfaces are washed with a mild soapy solution and then wiped dry.

To decoupage old furniture with your own hands looked elegant and neat, the surface should be smooth.

The measurements are taken very accurately, because then the measurements will have to cut the film, and in case of an error it will not completely cover the surface. After measurements, a film is cut for pasting furniture. In order to glue the kitchen set with self-adhesive film after “cutting” the sheet of film is applied to the decoration element for inspection. If the sizes match, a colored self-adhesive film is applied with the pattern up. To update the old kitchen with your own hands using a vinyl film, gently peel off the bottom adhesive tape and glue the cut piece in parts. No need to immediately try to stick the whole sheet. Under the vinyl material, air will fall, and the picture will take "bubbles". It doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing and spoils the whole appearance. Therefore, we glue it slowly.

In the course of gluing, we level the surface with a scraper to avoid the formation of bubbles. If nevertheless they appeared, there is no need to tear off the drawing and start all over again. To eliminate the “bubble” it is enough to pierce it with a thin needle.

Decoupage takes no more than three hours of work. If the fragments are glued crookedly - they will have to be torn off and glued again.

When glued to glass, the surface is previously degreased with detergents. It is harder to glue on glass, so it is better to choose glass surfaces without patterns. So the picture will lie smoother.

Paint finish: decoupage secrets on wood

If there is no film, you can use paint. Updating with paint takes longer, but also looks very original.

A kitchen set will need such accessories for decoupage:

  1. Fine sandpaper.

Decoupage of kitchen furniture with paint means painting parts of the set in plain or multi-colored colors. It is not necessary to paint over the entire surface, this can be done partially.

  • Single layer. The composition of this material includes multicomponent mixtures, which include polyvinyl chloride resin and various plasticizers. As auxiliary substances, stabilizers and pigments are also used. Further, all substances are mixed into a homogeneous mass, which, in turn, is formed into a film.

Important! Physico-chemical properties and stiffness of the film directly depend on the type of plasticizers added.

  • Two-layer. Two separate canvases, a base and a cover are made for the production of two-layer coatings. The base is most often used fabric or paper, and for the coating - polyvinyl chloride resin. For manufacturing, various molding methods are used. How to paste over a cabinet with a self-adhesive film?

Self-adhesive film will help in the restoration of your old cabinet. You could say give him a second life. How to glue a cabinet with self-adhesive film quickly, efficiently and remain satisfied with the end result?

  • Adhesive tape.
  • Pen or pencil.
  • Scissors.
  • Sharp knife.

  • Primer, putty, as well as sandpaper - to clean the surface.

Here are the basic tips for applying self-adhesive film to your favorite but old cabinet:

  • If there are oily sections of the cabinet, they must be washed. Then wash and dry all parts.

Important! We do not recommend scraping off the old cabinet cover with sandpaper, since when sticking the film in the cracks, air will remain. If the old coating peels off or crumbles, naturally, it will have to be removed.

  • When choosing a film for the cabinet, it is better to give preference to a thinner structure. This will provide ease in its application, as well as a beautiful aesthetic appearance.

Important! The choice of color is up to the owner of the premises, because only he is the creator of his space. There are many options: timeless classics, abstraction, positive children's drawings. We want to pay attention to the fact that the film of light tones is quickly contaminated, and the dark one is more durable. Therefore, dark shades will be most welcome.

  • Before applying the film, it is advisable to disassemble the cabinet, if possible. This will cover all surfaces and joints with a film, which will hide the color of the former coating.

Important! If the design contains handles, shelves, locks, then they also need to be removed, and then screwed into place.

  • It is necessary to glue the film immediately straight, otherwise it may be skewed, and then, pressing it to the part and rubbing it with a soft cloth to squeeze out the bubbles, it will be difficult to fix something.

Important! Gluing the cabinet, it is necessary to separate the film from the substrate gradually, two to three centimeters.

  • It is completely worth tightening the foil holes for handles, bolts, shelves. It can be easily punctured or cut after completion of work. You can install new handles and locks, thereby giving novelty to your favorite cabinet.

Now you know how to glue the cabinet with self-adhesive tape. It does not take much time, and the final effect will please you and your guests.

Important! We want to note that such canvases have a significant relief and a frequent pattern, which will help to hide defects on the surface of imperfect furniture.

  • If you still have paper wallpaper, then after pasting it is necessary to apply a couple of layers of varnish on them, which will give a certain gloss and protect the canvas from moisture.

We collect the necessary materials

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare such tools and materials:

  • Sandpaper - to prepare the surface for gluing.
  • Ruler, tape measure, corner - for measurement.
  • Pen, pencil, marker - for marking lines and borders.
  • Knife, scissors - for cutting wallpapers.
  • Primer and putty on wood - to prepare the surface for the sticker.
  • Roller, brush, spatula - for applying the compositions themselves.
  • Cloths for smoothing and removing glue.
  • Wallpaper glue or PVA glue.

As you can see, the list is quite large, but the end result is worth it. Turn on your creative imagination by adding a one-of-a-kind authorial contribution.

We start the preparatory work

Before wallpapering a cabinet, it is necessary to make the surface suitable for such a process. Therefore, you must do the following:

  • The first step is to disassemble the cabinet, remove all the accessories from it.
  • The next step is to sand this surface, thereby removing the entire layer of varnish from it. Sandpaper will help in this, but it will take a lot of time and effort.

Important! You can put on a drill screwdriver or grinder a specific nozzle and then walk on the surface. A building hair dryer will also help remove the varnish. To do this, you need to heat the surface and remove the old protective layer with a spatula. After this, be sure to plaster the surface. If your furniture is not processed with anything, then we recommend using a nulevka skin, for the effect of roughness.

  • At the next stage, with a damp cloth, we remove all dust from sandpaper and give the furniture a little rest.

Important! Puttying the cabinet is necessary if there are bumps and surface defects. By the way, embossed wallpaper can hide small irregularities. Deep defects will have to be smoothed using several layers.

  • You probably know that after the putty dries, these places need to be aligned with the general surface of the cabinet. Sandpaper will come to help, of course.
  • For the best coupling with the wallpaper, it remains only to prime this surface.

These preparatory work will undoubtedly help you to properly paste wallpapers on your cabinet, thereby improving the final result.

Gluing

Now let's proceed to pasting the cabinet itself. So, it goes through several stages:

  • Before you start, you need to make blanks from the remains of wallpaper. To do this, the desired surface is carefully measured, the dimensions are transferred to the wallpaper material. Next, we cut out the patterns in accordance with the dimensions of the cabinet.
  • After - we coat the prepared surface with glue. When applying glue, try to gradually level the canvas to avoid bevels and the formation of bubbles under the wallpaper itself. Agree, this is not at all difficult to do.

Important! For such work, it is better to use PVA construction glue, since it glues materials better, unlike wallpaper.

  • We recommend using dry rags to even the sheet and remove excess glue.

If you do not have a large budget, but want to update the interior, we suggest you learn how to glue self-adhesive film on furniture. With it, you can restore the old kitchen, give the desired texture and color of the living room or children's furniture. And so that the result does not disappoint you, we will analyze in detail how to stick a PVC film without bubbles, gaps and creases.

In addition to accessibility, self-adhesive PVC film has a number of advantages that both amateurs and professionals give out.   These include:

  • increased resistance of the material to temperature extremes, on average from –40 to +60 ° С;
  • moisture resistance;
  • ease of film application;
  • ease of operation;
  • a wide range of color palettes, patterns, patterns and textures;
  • suitable for most finishing surfaces (wood, plywood, particleboard, plastic, glass, wallpaper, ceramics and others).

Self-adhesive film is available in a wide range and is suitable for most finishing surfaces.

Most often, a pasted film with a decorative pattern can be seen on furniture, wallpaper, glass doors and windows. In the last two cases, it is preferable to use a stained-glass film with a mosaic pattern. And to protect other surfaces, we recommend a transparent self-adhesive film.   It will help to hide minor scratches, scuffs, cracks and other defects.

It is rational to apply self-gluing in the house to update the kitchen set. With its help, you can change the color and style of facades, make an imitation of countertops in stone, wood, metal, marble, other natural and artificial materials. We recommend sticking a self-adhesive film of transparent polyvinyl chloride on the work area, which will protect it from dust, dirt and grease.

Due to its increased resistance to temperature extremes, the film is used to glue the dressing table, as well as the walls and doors in the bathroom. Such material is not afraid of moisture, so it will last you more than one year, if desired, the selected design can be easily changed.

Using self-adhesive, it is easy to update the kitchen

Children's room is another place where such a decor would be appropriate. You can give the children's furniture not only a bright color, pick up materials depicting cartoon characters or characters from fairy tales, but also protect it from the playful hands of the child. From a vinyl surface with alcohol or a cleaner, marks from a marker, pens, pencils and paints that children love to leave on all surfaces, including furniture, are easily rubbed off. And if the child scratches the film, you can easily replace it with a new one. As in the kitchen and the nursery, you can stick a self-adhesive film on the furniture in the living room, bedroom or hallway, choosing the right color and texture.

Before gluing a cabinet or other furniture with a film, we prepare the necessary set of tools that will be needed to work with the material:

  • scissors;
  • stationery knife;
  • ruler and pencil;
  • plastic squeegee with felt pad;
  • dry cloth.

We begin by unscrewing all the pens and other parts that will interfere with your gluing process. Next, prepare the surface. Degrease it with alcohol or a solution with detergent, wipe it with a dry cloth. If you have lacquered or polished furniture, this will be enough. And for better adhesion of a rough or dull surface (wood, plywood, chipboard), we recommend primers with polyester varnish or methyl wallpaper glue. Before gluing the furniture with self-adhesive film, make sure that there are no cracks and chips. If such defects are found, treat them with sandpaper to smooth sharp corners, and then putty and open the furniture with acrylic varnish. If the surface to be glued is glass or metal, we advise you to moisten them so that it is easier for you to work with the film.

We measure the area of \u200b\u200bsticking with a ruler. Taking into account the fact that this material, as a rule, is glued to separate zones, a centimeter marking is drawn on the back side of the film on a paper substrate. If there is no marking on your self-adhesive, we do it ourselves. Cut the required amount of film with a margin of 1–2 cm for bending the edges with scissors or a clerical knife. Next comes the most important point: how to glue the film so that it does not form bubbles? The first thing to consider is do not immediately separate the entire film from the substrate and do not immediately apply the entire sheet. First, literally peel 5 cm of film from the paper base and attach it to the intended surface. To make the surface as smooth as possible, smooth the film material from the center to the edges, as is the case with wallpaper, so self-adhesive is most convenient to glue. The best tool for expelling air from under the film is a plastic squeegee with a felt insert. Thanks to the bottom of the plastic stiffness is maintained, the material does not slip out of the hands, and the pad of felt does not break through self-adhesive. Next, we continue to delay the next fragment and level it with a squeegee.

When the self-adhesive film is fully pasted, we cut with the help of a clerical knife the extreme protrusions at an oblique or right angle, bend one edge inward, and cover the joint with the other. We return the handle to the place. We find the holes on the facade and make a small cross-shaped incision in them, insert a screw and screw the accessories into place.

First of all, you need to measure the glue area

In order for the pasted surface to retain its original appearance for a long time, it must be taken care of. For regular cleaning, use a damp cloth (microfiber), and to degrease the surface, use a soap solution. More serious pollution rubbed with alcohol.   How to remove a boring film from furniture - three effective ways

If after a while you wanted to update the furniture design, change the old film to a new one, there are several ways. All of them consist in the effect of heat, as a result of which the adhesive layer begins to gradually peel off and lag behind the surface. In order not to spoil the furniture, we offer three proven ways to dismantle the old film.

Hot water. Wet the film with plenty of hot water. After the material is slightly wet, take a spatula, preferably plastic, so as not to scratch the tree, and carefully remove the sticky layer.

Hair dryer. If the first option with hot water was ineffective, use a hairdryer. It can be both an ordinary and a building hair dryer. We bring it at a distance of 20 cm from the film and heat the surface. The glue will gradually lag behind and self-adhesive can be easily removed with a spatula.

Fan heater. In winter, this device is used, perhaps, in every home. It's time to use it not only for heating, but also for film removal. We direct the hot air flow to self-adhesive, setting it to full power, wait until the external finish heats up and starts to peel off. In addition to the fan heater, you can use any other portable heating.

After removing the PVC, sticky marks may remain on the furniture, which can be easily removed with ethyl alcohol.
