Unlike conventional window-sill radiators, heating with warm skirting boards is not due to convection flows that first heat the air, but due to radiant energy that has a beneficial effect on humans.

It is often cited that the radial component of heat transfer at the thermo-skirting board is 80%, and the convection component is 20%.

Let's take a room with an area of ​​16 sq. M. In the room, along three walls 4 meters long, thermal skirting boards are installed. The height of the panel is 14 cm. Thus, the total area of ​​the emitting surface of the skirting board will be 1.68 sq. M.

With a panel width of 3 cm, the ascending convection heat flux, under the action of the Coanda effect, seems to be "pressed" against the wall. Therefore, it does not mix with the rest of the air in the room, but heats the overlying inner surface of the wall.

Thus, the walls under which a warm plinth is installed, at a height of up to 1.5 meters, are heated several degrees above room temperature, which creates a feeling of thermal comfort for people in the room.

Warm skirting board: buy or make

You can easily buy a warm water baseboard, both in Moscow and in any region. But the main and, perhaps, the most significant drawback that a warm water baseboard has is - the price for it is too high. And the electric price for a warm skirting board is also not particularly humane. In this article, we consider the water option:

On average, the price of a running meter of a warm plinth panel with all the necessary fasteners is above 2500 rubles.

If you add to this price the necessary components that you have to buy - an eyeliner, a manifold, a mixing unit and other elements, the cost of the thermal skirting board doubles.

That's why chicken-A I decided to make a thermo skirting board myself.

The necessary requirements for this are the low cost and convenience of making baseboard heating at home.

- Having undertaken a brainstorming session, I decided to abandon the finning and make a panel from a copper plate by soldering a tube to it.

Homemade panel specifications:

  • panel height - 140 mm;
  • inner tube diameter - 10 mm;
  • the outer diameter of the tube is 12 mm.

The tubes were made of unannealed copper in 6 m long sticks.

Of particular interest is the user's approach to the manufacture of warm skirting boards. For this chicken-A I cut a strip of ordinary roofing copper into 4 strips with a grinder.

Tubes to the panel are soldered with soft plumbing solder containing 3% copper using a gas torch and flux. In order to avoid warping of the metal at the soldering point, the main flame of the burner must be directed to the tube.

For connecting pipes and panels in a line chicken-A used sections of a pressure oil and petrol resistant hose. And the rubber pipes put on the ends of the copper pipes were secured with screw clamps.

- At the time of manufacture, this system (including the manifold and piping) cost me less than 500 rubles. in terms of 1 meter of the panel. Now, in January 2015, this amount, due to inflation, is approximately 800-900 rubles.

Installation of a warm skirting board

To prevent excessive heat loss in the places where the panels are attached to the wall, the forum member attached a strip of isolon with a reflective aluminized layer. On top of it, he screwed plumbing plastic clips to the wall.

This will allow, in case of need for repair, easy removal of the panels.

A separate circuit is drawn from the collector for each heated room. Its total length, together with the liner, should not exceed 15-16 meters. The temperature of the heating medium is regulated by means of a thermostatic mixture from the boiler circuit through a three-way valve with a servomotor.

Propylene glycol is used as a heat carrier. Thermostatic valves with thermostatic heads are installed at the entrance to each room.

- Approximately 55 liters of coolant was used to fill the system. It took 10 liters to fill the room circuits (total heated area 100 sq. M) and the collector. 35 liters were spent on the TT boiler, electric boiler and mains.

To improve the heat dissipation of the panels, chicken-A I wanted to paint them first, but abandoned this idea, deciding that the natural copper color looks great in the interior of the rooms.

Summing up

Homemade thermal skirting boards have been successfully working as the main heating system for a forum member's house for 7 years. For all the time, the system did not lose power and did not require any repairs.

- My house is well insulated. Depending on the weather, the coolant temperature is set in the range from 50 ° C to 70 ° C. Only in the coldest winter did I raise the temperature of the coolant to 80 ° C.

Feels like chicken-A, the thermal effect from working skirting boards is very soft and pleasant. The air does not dry out. And thanks to the radiant energy, the air temperature in the house can be kept at the level of 20-21 ° C.

Also, as an improvement to the chicken-A system, he proposes to increase the height of the panel from 14 to 19 cm. In his opinion, this fully compensates for the absence of the tube ribbing, which is difficult to make on his own.
