To make a high-quality and sustainable ottoman, you will need:

  • 16 bottles with a capacity of 1.5 liters or 9 bottles with a capacity of 2 liters. Use bottles with caps

  • Packaging cardboard. Any cardboard from household appliances that has not been thrown away for years can be used to make a pouf.
  • Scotch.
  • Foam rubber.
  • Upholstery. The fabric must be strong and of good quality so that it can be wiped clean and washed. You can use leather or furniture fabric, which is sold in a specialty store.
  • Hot glue gun.
  • Zipper for the cover.
  • Scissors.

Important! If you plan to create a large ottoman that will serve as a table or an armchair, then for the convenience of making the bottle, connect it into separate sectors and sections, fixing them with tape, and then start to form the overall structure.

Step-by-step instruction:

  2. After completing the circle, cut out two circles of the same diameter from cardboard, which should be slightly larger than the bottle design. This will be the top and bottom of the base.
  3. Tape the cardboard tightly to the plastic structure. The frame for the pouf is ready.
  4. Cut 3 blanks from foam rubber: 2 circles of the same diameter and 1 rectangle, which will wrap vertically around the frame.

  • If you plan to use the ottoman for personal use, then use a thick fabric to make the cover, and trim the seams with a border. For a children's ottoman, use a brighter, more variegated fabric, as well as a denser layer of foam rubber. Add an additional functional element in the form of a strap to the finished product, which will make it easier to carry. The child will be happy to carry such a pouf with him as a toy.

  • Combine fabric and cardboard. Make a hole in the center, thread the furniture handle bolt through the cardboard and fabric. Screw the knob onto the bolt. If you are using a large button, then join the fabric with the cardboard in the middle.
  • Roll the microfiber into a tube, radially wrap the bolt between the cardboard and the fabric, creating a kind of roll. Fix the microfiber firmly with glue to prevent it from unwinding.
  • Stretch the upholstery fabric, secure it from the back with a stapler.
  • Cover the back of the seat with another piece of cloth and glue it to hide any traces of cardboard.
  • Cut the Velcro into 4 equal pieces, and stick them on the bottom of the bucket and the base in a crisscross pattern.

Important! The fluffy part of the Velcro should face the seat and the bristles should face the bucket.

  • Connect the cover and base.

The ottoman is ready with your own hands and now you can sit on it with comfort!

How to sew a pouf?

If you like to sew, then you can make a soft ottoman with your own hands at home, not only from multi-colored fabric, but also from old clothes. Any sweater can turn into a very noticeable and comfortable piece of furniture. The main thing is desire and fantasy.

Option number 1. Simple fabric pouf

If you don't have time to fiddle with patterns, then use a simple way to make an original piece of furniture:

  • Cut 2 circles out of the fabric with matching hem and hem diameters and seam allowances.
  • Cut 2 rectangular pieces to the same size. The width of the rectangles should be equal to the height of the pouf, and the length should be equal to half the circumference of the upper and lower parts of the product.
  • Sew the rectangular pieces along the width on one side to make a long ribbon.
  • Sweep away the resulting tape and circles. Sew circles along the seam. If the seam is not straight enough, cover it with a decorative trim.
  • Fill the finished cover with any suitable material.

Important! For the inner filling of the pouf, use foam rubber or synthetic winterizer. These materials hold their shape perfectly and do not deform.

  • Sew the zipper into the unsewn edges of the rectangular tape.

Important! Make a hole for the padding material at the bottom so that it is not visible. If you wish, you can sew it tightly or sew a zipper into the hole in order to be able to change the material if necessary.

You can make a pouf in the shape of a cube. Parts for the product should be square. On the sides you will need 4 parts, and on the base and bottom - 2. Sew the details together, and to clearly define the edges of the cube, use a canvas in a contrasting color.

Important! Use a denser fabric to make the cube for strength and bounce.

Option number 2. Colored fabric pouf

Sewing a bright piece of furniture is a snap. To work you will need:

  • Fabric in different colors.
  • Lining fabric.
  • Large buttons (2 pieces).
  • Filler.
  • Needle with thread.
  • Sewing machine.

The process of making a striking masterpiece is quite simple:

  1. Draw a circle of the desired size on paper (such as the pouf you want to get). Divide it into 12 parts. If you have fewer colors, you can divide the circle into 6-10 pieces.
  2. Attach the finished patterns to the fabric, cut out triangular blanks with a small margin for seams.
  3. Cut the lining fabric in the same way.
  4. Grab the petals of the circle with threads, and then sew them on the typewriter. You should get two round bases - the top and the bottom. Sew the bases from the inside out, leaving one piece unstitched.
  5. Unscrew the cover, place the filler inside it.
  6. Sew the last piece neatly. Close the stitching place with large buttons.

Important! In order not to spend money on buying new fabric, use scraps from old clothes.

If you like to crochet or knit, you can make a soft frameless ottoman with your own hands:

  • For work, you will need the thickest knitting needles with a diameter of 9 mm and a fairly thick wool. Cotton ropes (20-30 pieces) can also be used.
  • Tie them into a long rectangle.
  • Fasten the side of the workpiece with a rope to make a spacious skirt, and pull the bottom with the same rope to make a bag.

Important! To fill the bag, you can use old things or buy foam rubber (holofiber).

Option number 3. Furniture from an old sweater

To make an original piece of furniture, you will need:

  • Old sweater.
  • Scissors.
  • Needle and thread.
  • Felt.
  • Lining fabric for the cover.
  • Stuffing material.

  1. Cut out the bottom of the felt for a round or square ottoman. This element will serve as the primary blank.
  2. Take a sweater, turn the sleeves inside.
  3. Sew the remaining hole with an even seam.
  4. Sew a piece of felt to the bottom of the sweater to create a pouch bag.
  5. Prepare a lining fabric cover for padding. If the primary blank made of felt has a round shape, then you need a piece of fabric in the form of a rectangle, for example, with a length of 70 cm and a width of 50 cm.If you decide to make a square ottoman, then calculate the required dimensions for four parts.
  6. Sew all the parts together and leave a fold on top for the lace that will tighten the hole after filling the cover with material.
  7. Place the cover inside the sweater.
  8. Fill the cover with material. Tighten the lace as tight as possible.
  9. Spread out your sweater, enjoy your new piece of furniture.

Option number 4. Ottoman ball

  • High density fabric in two colors.
  • Paper for making patterns.
  • Scissors.
  • Needle and thread.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Polyethylene.
  • Silicone filler in the form of balls.

The process of creating an ottoman ball is as follows:

  1. Make a pattern on paper, observing the required dimensions. You can use any round piece of furniture to create a pattern, such as a table lamp shade or a large ball. Measure its circumference, and divide the result in half. Divide the number into 5 parts so that 3 middle and 2 extreme are the same size. As a result, you will get the diameter of the base in the form of a circle and the width of the stripes that make up the spherical cover of the pouf.
  2. Transfer the resulting markup to the object of your choice, starting with the part in the form of a circle. Draw the next line below, along the previously calculated bandwidth.
  3. Cut one side of the plastic bag and cut off the bottom. Lay out the bag on the marks of the first strip, and secure the edges with tape. Transfer a quarter of the strip to the bag and cut out. Prepare the part of the middle strip in the same way.
  4. Transfer all the details to graph paper, cut out the details of the ottoman from fabric of two colors, leaving 1 cm for the seams.
  5. Stitch the stripes, leaving one side unstitched.
  6. Attach one strip to the round piece. The ends of the strip should converge. Stitch them and connect the base with the strip of seams, stepping back 1 cm from the edge.
  7. Sew a similar blank for the opposite side of the cover. Sew the workpiece to the middle strip. Do not sew up the ends of the middle strip.
  8. Sew a second half-round stock with a middle strip. Iron the seams.
  9. Fill the case with silicone balls, and to make the shape elastic, add small pieces of foam rubber.
  10. Sew the hole with a blind stitch.

DIY wooden ottoman

Applying carpentry skills, you can make really great things that will be useful in everyday life. Having made an ottoman with a drawer, you will have not only a wonderful interior decoration, but additional space where you can put things.

To make the base frame, take all the necessary materials and tools. First of all, you will need 4 sheets of chipboard or laminated board, preferably 40 by 30 centimeters in size.

Consider the stages of work:

  • The boards are fastened together, self-tapping screws will help to do this. Do not forget about the metal corners, with which you will form an even structure. It is advisable to coat all the details with wood glue.
  • If you want your ottoman to move, you can attach castors to the bottom of the product. To do this, you first need to attach 4 bars, 4.8 centimeters in size. Take special furniture wheels, which have everything you need to fasten them. We attach the bars from below with the help of wood glue, we attach the wheels to them. We put the base on top.

  • Once you've formed the frame, you can start upholstering your creation. Take 4 pieces of foam and attach it to the top of the pouf and to the sides. Since your product is on casters, there is no need to upholster the lower part.
  • Then comes the most important thing, you need to make an attractive outer case. We will consider how to do it below. For the cover, you will need a special upholstery fabric that will not wear out so much. Sew the cover, preferably with a zipper, so that you can change it if necessary.

Ottoman made of plastic bottles

Not everyone has carpentry skills and can make an ottoman from boards, but this does not mean that you need to abandon this idea. You can even make a wonderful ottoman from plastic bottles. And what will be the benefits of this for nature!

As with the wood ottoman, you will first need to make a frame. It is made from plastic bottles. Two circles are cut out of cardboard, the diameter of which will depend on your personal preferences. It is advisable to take thick cardboard, so you can take the box where the office equipment was.

Then they take plastic bottles and fasten them together with tape, this must be done carefully so that the bottles are fastened evenly. Put all the structural elements together.

Make upholstery from dense foam rubber. First cut the piece to the bottom and top, attach it to your structure. Then cut a rectangle to fit your piece. In order not to be mistaken, make it a few centimeters larger, as it will then need to be sewn together. You can connect all the elements with each other using tight stitches.

Now you can sew a cover for your product. To do this, you will need to choose the right fabric, the color and density you need. In this case, you do not need to bother with the pattern. Simply cut out two circles from the fabric that will attach at the top and bottom, and 2 rectangles that fit. Then the rectangles will need to be sewn.

After that, sew the top piece with the rectangles, taking in the thread. And you can proceed to the lower part, which is sewn in the same way as the upper one. A decorative border will help to brighten up all the shortcomings if the seam does not turn out so beautiful for you. Just attach it, your product will look more attractive. You can attach a zipper to the unstitched edges of the rectangles sewn together.

If you are making a cylindrical ottoman, then the cover for it is sewn a little differently. You have to make all the parts in a cylinder shape. You should make the side pieces not from two pieces of fabric, but from four. The fabric should be dense so that the shape holds well.

What can be made from an old sweater

You can create truly magnificent interior decorations from old things. Take an old sweater with an interesting design and make a do-it-yourself ottoman bag out of it. Consider how to make an ottoman bag with your own hands.

  • First, make a blank of felt to serve as the bottom of your piece.
  • Now we give the old sweater the desired shape, for this the sleeves will need to be bent inside the product and sew the remaining holes. Try to keep your seam straight.
  • The bottom of the sweater and the felt are sewn together, and you get a bag, which you just have to fill with some material. But before you do this, you will need to strengthen the structure.
  • To keep the ottoman perfectly in shape, it is better to make an inner cover for it made of lining fabric. Make 4 pieces according to the size of your item and sew them together. Remember to leave a hole at the top so you can fill it.
  • At the top, you need to make a lace so that you can tighten your structure after stuffing. Place the cover inside. Use expanded polystyrene, foam rubber and synthetic winterizer to stuff your bag. Pull the entire structure tightly with a cord and enjoy your new piece of furniture.

As you can see, making an ottoman is a creative process, so you can change something or create your own designs using materials at hand. Think about how to make your own creation or use the instructions.

A pouf is a small and very functional piece of furniture. Its popularity has not declined in the least over the past years. Now this useful piece of furniture is as popular as ever. Its production can be the first step towards the beginning of independent production of upholstered furniture. This will allow, first of all, to try your hand and work out the technology.

This short review will describe how to make an ottoman with your own hands. The assembled product will be a great addition to the interior of the living room or hallway.

Choice of design and construction

This item is the easiest to manufacture, so any, even the most novice master, can handle it. Before starting work, you first need to decide on the design of the future product. Studying photos of various ottomans will help in this.

The ottoman can have a rigid frame or do without it at all. Various materials can be used as a frame. The most commonly used classic joinery materials such as boards, plywood, chipboard.

Frame poufs can also be made from old plastic bottles, buckets or car tires. Poufs without a frame are a neatly sewn bag stuffed with expanded polystyrene.

Ottoman frame

Assembling this item is not difficult. Let's figure out what and with what materials you can make a pouf with your own hands. Different tools and materials are used depending on the design.

Frameless pouf

The simplest soft ottoman without a rigid frame is made using a minimum set of tools. To do this, it is necessary to sew a bag with a lining and fill it with granular expanded polystyrene, specially produced in the form of balls for stuffing furniture. Therefore, it is easy to purchase it at a hardware store or in the market.

Tire pouf

A new and quite popular model now are ottomans made of old car tires. Making them is also quite simple. This will require an old tire, preferably fixed to a metal disc for rigidity.

If the tire is without a disc, then the rigidity of the structure can be given by wooden partitions installed inside the tire.

In order to make such an ottoman, it is necessary to cut two circles from plywood 3-5 millimeters thick and attach them with screws to the cover from above and below to create horizontal planes. Then, using a quick-drying glue, glue the rope in a spiral to the surface from the center to the edges.

The top wooden surface and the rubber side surface are covered with a rope. Before buying material, you need to calculate the length of the rope and estimate its cost.

Perhaps such a piece of furniture will not fit into a living room or bedroom, but it may be suitable for a home workshop or study. At the same time, you can try not to trim its surface with a rope, but only stick a soft seat on the upper surface, leaving the rubber intact.

Pouf made of plastic bottles

Such furniture can be made from a variety of materials. For example, even plastic bottles and old buckets can be used as a frame, but it is better to use more durable materials. They are not so expensive in price and their consumption is very small.

With their help, you can create an ottoman of any size and shape and add additional structural elements to it: assemble an ottoman with a hinged lid, a drawer for various little things, legs or rollers.

Pouf made of plywood, chipboard

Quite simply, puffs are made with a frame made of chipboard, wood or plywood. Such products can be heavily loaded and can be used like an ordinary stool.

To create it, the sheet material is first cut in accordance with the drawing. It is fastened with screws and wooden bars fixed along the edges of the sheets. Small irregularities will be hidden by the soft upholstery and finishing fabric.

The pouf can have a hinged lift-up lid. It will be possible to store small things in it, but for this you need to make the bottom. The cover, depending on the base, can have a different shape: round, square.

Lining

The next step is to attach the soft pad. For these purposes, a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber is used, which is attached with construction brackets and glue. A fabric or leather decorative covering is attached in the same way over the upholstery.

The color and type of coating in no less form determines the design of the product, as well as its frame. The decoration of the product determines its overall design, therefore it depends on how the product will fit into the interior. Since the product turns out to be rather small, it is quite possible to use the most daring color solutions, which will almost always be appropriate.

For convenience, the pouf can have legs or casters. They are installed at the last stage. If you decide to do it without rollers, then in order not to scratch the floor, you should glue four small pieces of felt from ordinary insoles from below.

In the production of any furniture, the main thing is to patiently do all the work, carefully following each step. You can make an ottoman with your own hands from almost anything, you can use a wide variety of materials and ideas.

The most important thing is that for this you will be rewarded with a new piece of furniture that will serve you for many years, pleasing with a pleasant appearance.

Fashionable and modern: pear ottoman

Pear ottoman scheme

Further we will talk about how to sew an ottoman bag with your own hands - a very fashionable piece of furniture in modern interior decor. You might think, isn't it easier to buy such a corner ottoman in a store? Of course easier, but much more expensive! And it is for those who value their money and are at least a little versed in the field of cutting and sewing, this step-by-step instruction is dedicated.

To make a soft ottoman, a pear will need:

  • dense upholstery fabric - 320x150 mm;
  • fabric for the inner cover - 300x150 mm;
  • expanded polystyrene filler with the addition of holofiber - 0.5-1 cubic meters meter.;
  • pattern paper;
  • dense threads;
  • lightning - 60 cm.

The sizes of ottomans are determined mainly by the height of the people who will use them. It is better to be equal to the tallest member of the family, since people with smaller stature will in any case be very comfortable to sit on a large bag.

It is advisable to choose a fabric for upholstery that is dense to support the shape of the bag and is more resistant to wear. An excellent option would be tapestry, suede, jeans, capitonné, eco-leather, etc.

The inner cover of the pouf should be made of smooth, sliding, synthetic fabric. Thanks to this choice, the filler will freely move around the bag, taking the form of a person sitting in it.

Sewing products

The pouf pattern consists of six gussets for the bag itself and one lower part for its base.

Bean bag chair pattern

First, you need to make drawings of the required parts on paper, and then transfer them to the fabric for the inside and outside of the pouf.

Cutting is carried out taking into account seam allowances of about 1.5 cm.

The parts of the upholstery bag should be slightly larger than those intended for the padding, so it will be much easier for you to put the outer cover on the bag with the padding.

The second stage of work will be to sew all the fabric elements of the bag. First, sew the wedges together, and then proceed to the base. Do not forget to leave space for the zipper on the outer cover - the zipper will make it easier to clean the chair with a bag and will allow you to update the cover at any time. When both bags are ready, pour 2/3 of the amount of filler into the inner bag and carefully sew the remaining areas. Put on the decorative cover on top and close the zipper. The ottoman is ready!

A practical piece of furniture - pouf with storage box

Ottoman with drawer

We bring to your attention a short description of how to make an ottoman with your own hands, which will combine several practical functions:

  • a transformer pouf with one movement of the hand can turn from a soft seat into a storage place for many different items;
  • An ottoman with a drawer is perfect for dressing tables, because it will be possible not only to sit comfortably on it, but also to fold inside a lot of hairdressing accessories, such as irons, curlers, hair stylers and other items;
  • On a homemade ottoman, you can not only sit down, undressing in the hallway, but also use it as a shoe cabinet or to store care products at the same time.

Materials for work:

  • chipboard sheet;
  • wooden beam with a cross section of 4x4 cm;
  • joiner's glue;
  • self-cuts;
  • hacksaw;
  • construction stapler for furniture;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • foam rubber;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • fabric for upholstery (velor, eco-leather, suede, capitonné, etc.);
  • butt hinges;
  • furniture rollers.

Stages of work

It is necessary to cut blanks of the following sizes from a chipboard sheet:

  • 37x40 cm - 2 pieces;
  • 37x37 cm - 2 pieces;
  • 40x40 cm - 2 pcs.

Cut four pieces of 37 cm from a wooden bar - this will be the height of the ottoman. Next, you should assemble the box - all the side fragments dock together, after which the bars are glued in the inner corners.

Ottoman frame

From the outside, all parts of the structure are fixed with self-tapping screws. Glue is applied to the lower part of the timber and the bottom of the box is glued. Then you need to let the glue dry well, and then screw in the screws for reliability.

Small bars-stoppers for the cover of the ottoman

The box is pasted over with padding polyester, and then sheathed with upholstery fabric using a furniture stapler. For the mobility of the product, rollers can be attached to the underside of the product.

The manufacture of the cover, which plays the role of a soft and comfortable seat, is carried out as follows: we glue a synthetic winterizer to one of the surfaces of a chipboard sheet measuring 40x40 cm, and then foam rubber.

New life of old furniture - stool pouf

Stool pouf

Next, we will tell you how to make an ottoman from a stool yourself. If you have an old stool at home that has lost its presentable appearance, but at the same time is still a sturdy stool, you should not write it off. Using a little fabric and foam rubber, you can transform it with your own hands from scrap materials into a gorgeous, soft and comfortable pouf.

So, how do we make an ottoman out of an old stool:

  1. Cut out a 120 cm by 34 cm cut from the upholstery fabric for the side and a 48 cm circle for the pillow. To make the seat soft, cut out a circle of foam rubber and glue it to the top of the chair.
  2. We sew a cover from fabric blanks: first, it is necessary to make a basting stitch along the edge of the circle and slightly tighten it. Next, you need to sew the circle to the long side of the rectangular cut, and decorate the seams with a decorative cord or tape. Sew adhesive tape along the open edge, hem the bottom edge.
  3. Make 4 pockets from pieces of fabric and stitch them to the cover at an even distance from each other. The pockets can be decorated to taste with different decorative elements.
  4. The finished cover, which took no more than an hour to make, is put on a stool.

Today we told you how to make an ottoman with your own hands step by step in several versions - a pouf made of stools, a pouf made of chipboard and soft filler. You are given the opportunity to choose the most optimal and acceptable option for yourself, which will depend on your abilities, financial capabilities, as well as on the design style of your rooms. In any case, such an original detail in the interior will not remain unnoticed and will not only decorate the house for many years, but also make your rest and life more comfortable.

A handmade pouf will help to diversify the children's room and create an unusual place to relax. The shape and size of the future piece of furniture is chosen depending on the age of the children. For work, colorful fabrics with cartoon characters, bright yarn and various decorative elements (ribbons, buttons, toys, appliques) can be used.

Making a round pouf with a handle

The simplest option is a round pouf, consisting of several parts. It can be made from a dense, bright fabric, the edges of which will be decorated with a border in a contrasting color. In addition to fabric and braid for work you will need:

  • compass,
  • a large sheet of paper or several A4 sizes glued together,
  • padded material (synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, spunbond, holofiber or any similar),
  • sewing machine,
  • threads to match.

Instead of a pattern for such a pouf, a paper blank in the form of a circle is used. For this, a circle of the required diameter is outlined on the sheet with a compass and cut along the contour. If you plan a chair with a larger diameter than the compass allows, then you can use a structure of two pencils tied with a thread with a length equal to the radius of the future pouf. One pencil is set in the center, while the other draws a drawing with a stretched thread.

Using a blank from the fabric, 2 round parts are cut out - the bottom and the upper part of the chair. And you will also need two identical rectangles equal to half the length of the circumference. The width of the rectangles is selected based on the required chair height. For the handle, you need to cut out two more smaller rectangles. Don't forget about allowances.

From large rectangles you need to make a single piece by stitching them together from the wrong side. Round details are trimmed with tape. Small rectangles are sewn together from the inside out, then turned inside out and connected with a blind seam on the remaining side and also processed with braid.

After preparing the parts, they are swept together. A zipper can be sewn into the side of a long rectangular piece. If it is not necessary, then this side is swept away with a blind seam after filling the pouf with filler. A handle is sewn onto the side of the chair.

Knitted pouf

Knitted look cozy and home-like. The difference between the knitted options and the chairs proposed in the previous master class is that they use not dense fabric, but yarn in combination with a thin fabric for lining. If you do not have knitting skills, then you can make such a pouf from an old sweater. For this, the sleeves are hidden inside and sewn up. The lower part is swept away and the neck is tied. For such a knitted bag, it is better to choose a sweater with a dense structure.

Chairs from plastic bottles

To make a similar version of a pouf, you will need several bottles of the same size, cardboard, tape, foam rubber and upholstery fabric. The bottles are connected with tape and form the frame of the pouf. The shape of the future piece of furniture can be any. The upper and lower parts are made of cardboard (preferably corrugated), on which foam rubber is glued. The sides are also cushioned with foam rubber. A fabric cover is put on top, which can be sewn by analogy with the first master class.

Making a beanbag chair

Instead of a pouf, a frameless bean bag chair, resembling a pear in shape, can settle in the children's room. Sewing a bag is not difficult. This requires a pattern, bright dense fabric and filler. The pear is formed from six main wedges, sewn together in order of priority, upper and lower parts.
