What to do if the sofa fell through the middle? High-quality restoration of sofas with your own hands How to repair a spring block for a sofa.

Regardless of the quality of the furniture in the room, sooner or later it becomes unusable. Then you need to carry out, for example, do-it-yourself sofa repair. To perform such work, you need to stock up on a set of attributes for editing, personal desire and the ability to interact with different materials.

The main details of the sofa.

The success in carrying out repair measures directly depends on the state in which the frame base is located. Moreover, an old-style sofa made of chipboard is much more difficult to fix than it can be done with a more modern analogue on wood.

Having studied in detail the design features of this piece of furniture, you can get to work.

Design features of the sofa

You can restore an old sofa by repairing or replacing the main elements in the form of legs, supports, locks and upholstery. All of these activities require special attention.

There are many models of sofas, however, each of the varieties is characterized only by its inherent details:

Scheme of a sofa from a bar.

  • armrests are made of wood, metal, MDF or chipboard, providing softness or rigidity;
  • inconsistency of upholstery fabrics, represented by leather or leatherette;
  • inner layer of synthetic winterizer, batting or furniture foam rubber;
  • the use of polyurethane foam to improve cushioning qualities;
  • installation of a spring block;
  • the use of burlap to prevent squeaks during operation;
  • the frame is made of natural wood or chipboard.

Attention! The quality and duration of the period of use of the sofa depends on the use of good materials for the construction of the frame structure and the correct installation. Significant importance is attached to the internal filler, which affects comfort and safety.

Remember! You need to disassemble the sofa from the side parts, then the back and seat are removed.

Types of mechanisms:

  • sofa book is used most often;
  • the eurobook is transformed by moving the seat with the back unfolded;
  • eurobook "tic-tac" moves, occupying a circular position;
  • "accordion" is represented by 3 parts, which are repaired in rare cases;
  • the click-clack device is represented by the following positions: assembled, half-folded and completely;
  • the "dolphin" design can be seen in the angular type mechanisms.

To understand how to repair a sofa, you should understand the features of the breakdown. If the transforming structure is out of order, it is necessary to replace it in the model under consideration with similar parts.

The best examples of sofas will be mechanisms on a spring frame covered with burlap or batting. However, such designs will be expensive. Often, in order to reduce the price, manufacturers take coarse calico and foam rubber. In cheaper versions of sofas, blocks on springs are not installed. To fill the sofa from the inside, polyurethane foam is taken and laid in a thick layer.

Repair of an old sofa should be carried out using only high-quality materials, which will significantly extend its service life. So, the thickness of polyurethane foam should not be less than 40 cm. The used holofiber allows you to wash the structure, the synthetic winterizer is able to emphasize the relief pattern of the sofa, does not absorb moisture. Periotek has a high base strength and is not afraid of high temperatures. For spring varieties, it is best to use a 5 cm padded jacket, trimmed with a layer of hard matter.

You can replace the outer upholstery yourself. For this, fabrics are taken: leather, velor, flock, tapestry, jacquard, chenille. Skin tightening is performed by specialists because of the complexity in carrying out such work. The remaining types of matter allow you to carry out repairs on your own.

Upholstery replacement procedure

Before carrying out the main work, the sofa must be disassembled. So that in the future there are no difficulties with the assembly, it is important to remember the order of the parts. To do this, they are numbered or captured on camera. After disassembly, the mechanisms are inspected. Strong wear indicates the need to replace them.

Sofa upholstery options

  1. First, the side parts are removed, the seat rises and the bolts are unscrewed. Then the main device responsible for the transformation of the model is removed. The seat, backrest and frame must be unscrewed. Other elements of the sofa are also removed, leaving only the skeleton.
  2. Old upholstery must be removed very carefully to avoid damaging it. This canvas will be used as a pattern for a new coating. To dismantle the pillows, they are disconnected from the unfolding device. Old screws are unscrewed from each side.
  3. You can use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old upholstery fabric. A bracket is attached to it, the part is gradually swayed and finally removed with pliers. Next, the casing is removed, the quality of the lining material is checked. In good condition, it can remain in its original place, after which a new skin is pulled on top.
  4. Next, the cover is sewn. To do this, you need to have the skills to work on a sewing machine. The finished coating is fixed with staples. At the time of determining the fabric on the surface, it is important to monitor its evenness, there should be no folds and wrinkles on it. Manual upholstery replacement involves tying the front side; at the fixation points, the fabric is folded 2 times. Then you can go to the other side and subsequently to the corners.

Furniture can be expensive and not very, high and low quality. Regardless of this, after a certain time it wears out and it becomes necessary to repair the sofa with your own hands. All work can really be done independently, it is enough to have elementary work skills, the necessary tools and materials.

If you have an old sofa with a chipboard frame, then it will be harder to repair than one with a wooden frame, but everything will depend on the condition of the frame.

In order to repair the sofa with our own hands, we need to know its design.

Design features

There are various models of sofas, but almost all of them consist of basic elements:

  • the armrest can be soft or not, made of metal, wood, chipboard or MDF;
  • upholstery material can also be different: leather, leatherette, fabric;
  • a layer of batting or synthetic winterizer; furniture foam rubber is usually used as a filler;
  • to improve cushioning, some models install a layer of polyurethane foam;
  • the main shock-absorbing element is the spring block;
  • burlap is used so that when rubbing against plywood or metal there are no extraneous sounds;
  • the frame of the sofa is made of wood or chipboard.

Your sofa may not have all of the items listed, but now you will know their name and purpose.

In many ways, the durability of your sofa will depend on the quality of the frame and the material from which it is made. The life of the sofa, the comfort of its use and environmental friendliness will depend on what filler is used.

Parsing the sofa should begin with the removal of the sidewalls, after which the elements of the back and seat are removed.

Types of transformation mechanisms:

  • the most common is a sofa book;
  • when using the eurobook, the seat extends and the back rests in its place;
  • eurobook tick-tock does not extend, but moves in a circle;
  • type accordion consists of 3 parts, but it is practically not repaired;
  • the use of the click-clack mechanism allows you to make 3 positions: in the form of a sofa, in a semi-unfolded state and in the form of a bed;
  • the dolphin mechanism is used in corner sofas.

In the event of a breakdown, the transformation mechanism of the old sofa should only be changed to the one used in the specified model.

If we talk about fillers, then one of the best is a spring block covered with batting and burlap, but this option is expensive, and often foam rubber and calico are used to reduce the cost. The cheapest models do not use a spring block, instead they put several layers of polyurethane foam or similar material.

Since you are renovating an old sofa for yourself, you need to use quality materials. Polyurethane foam must be taken with a thickness of at least 40 mm. The use of holofiber allows you to do wet cleaning of the sofa. The synthetic winterizer does not absorb moisture, makes the furniture embossed.

A padded jacket is well suited for a spring block - 5 cm of cotton wool, covered with a layer of coarse fabric. Periotek holds its shape well, has high strength and heat resistance.

The upholstery is fabric or leather. Working with leather is quite difficult, so this work should be done by specialists. You can work with the fabric yourself, it is divided into woven and non-woven textiles. Most often, when deciding how to repair a sofa, the following fabrics are used: flock, velor, jacquard, chenille, tapestry.

Upholstery replacement

Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to disassemble the sofa. You need to remember the location of the parts so that you can put everything back together later. To simplify the assembly process, you can use a camera or video camera during disassembly.

First remove the armrests, they can be combined with the legs. The sidewalls are mounted on two bolts, in order to unscrew them, you need to lift the seat. After that, the transformation mechanism is removed, it is unscrewed from the frame, seat and backrest. Now the rest of the sofa is dismantled until one frame remains.

The upholstery must be removed carefully so as not to damage it, as it will then be used as a template for cutting a new upholstery. If the mattress is in good condition, then you should not disassemble it.

In order to make a cover, you need to have basic sewing skills. If the sofa has a complex shape, then you will have to work harder. Fasten the finished cover with staples. If the stretch is carried out manually, then first the fabric is attached from the front side, at the attachment points it must be folded in half. After that, they are attached on the opposite side, and then in the corners, making sure that the fabric is stretched and there are no folds.

Similarly, the upholstery is replaced on all other structural elements. After that, the sofa is assembled in the reverse order.

It's no secret that over time, the upholstery of upholstered furniture loses its original appearance, especially if there are pets in the house, old furniture often does not fit into the new interior after renovation. In this case, you should not change existing furniture for new interior items.

A simpler solution would be to replace the upholstery fabric and soft lining of upholstered furniture. In most cases, this is not at all difficult to do. This short review provides detailed instructions on how to pull the sofa with your own hands.

Self-upholstery of sofas

It is quite possible to update the upholstery of upholstered furniture on your own or with the help of professionals. When doing work on your own, you may encounter the following difficulties that are difficult to overcome without special skills:

Problems can arise at the first stage of disassembling furniture. Sometimes without special skills and tools to do this is problematic. Therefore, having decided on this work, you need to test your strength by pulling at least a stool. On this simple task, you can hone the technology and pick up a tool.

Sofa details can have complex geometric shapes. Therefore, it is difficult for them to make the correct pattern, and then carry out the correct stretch. It will be easier to make a pattern if you copy it from an old upholstery.

Pulling a book sofa, which essentially consists of two rectangular halves and two sides, is much easier than a non-folding sofa with large armrests and additional pillows, or in the case when the pattern consists of several pieces of fabric.

When restoring old furniture, it may not be enough to just replace the upholstery. Often, replacement of the filler, repair of the frame, and even replacement of springs in old sofas is required.

Antique furniture requires very careful handling, it is better to entrust its repair and renovation to professionals.

For finishing, materials difficult to work with can be used. Leather is much more difficult to deal with than fabric. For the first hand-made upholstery of the sofa, it is better to choose fabric materials.

Work performance technology

This task is time-consuming, but quite doable work. Drag the sofa at home is not difficult at all, if all the steps must be performed carefully and in accordance with the recommendations and instructions.

At the first stage, the sofa is disassembled: overhead elements, seat, backrest are removed. Fasteners are useful during assembly, so they are carefully assembled.

Next, the old upholstery is removed. This is done with an ordinary thin flat screwdriver. The cover should not be thrown away, as new pieces of fabric will be cut out according to its shape. After removing the coating, you need to check the condition of the internal structure and clean it.

Foam rubber requires mandatory replacement, as it has a short service life compared to natural materials. Instead of foam rubber, a relatively recently appeared synthetic winterizer, which has a long service life, can be used. In addition, you need to correct and check the fastening of the metal springs.

Then patterns are made from new material. They are very easy to make using the removed old upholstery, you just need to add a few centimeters on each side for an allowance, the excess of which is then cut off. Similarly, all fabric blanks are made for both pillows and for the sofa itself.

Upholstery fabric is best purchased with a small margin. Since with inaccuracies in size and calculations, it may not be enough and in the worst case it will not be possible to buy it in addition.

Depending on the purpose of the furniture, various materials are purchased. They can be made from breathable natural but non-durable fabric ideal for sleeping in, or they can be made from hard-wearing leather suitable for long-term continuous use, such as in organizations.

Buying fabric or leather is a very important undertaking, so before you reupholster a sofa, you should study photos of various design solutions, choose your individual style, choose the right fabric and shop.

Material selection

The choice of materials should be made with great care. It is necessary to select fabrics not only for their design and combination, but also for their quality.

Good quality fabric should not smell strongly. The pile must be firmly fixed on the base, there should be no molting. Its consumption depends on the pattern of the fabric, since in some cases it is required to set the pattern in a certain direction.

The synthetic winterizer is also not the same and requires a choice. When buying it, you should pay attention to the fact that it must be white, odorless, durable, not torn in the hands.

Foam also comes in different quality. The main characteristic is the size of the bubbles. In high-quality foam rubber, the bubbles are small, and in lower quality material they are large. The size of the bubbles, oddly enough, determines the durability and wear resistance of foam rubber.

Upholstery with fabric is the final step and is carried out using a construction stapler and glue. This operation is easier to perform if you take photographs of the furniture before disassembly.

Self-upholstery of furniture at home is quite feasible, but requires certain skills and patience. A neatly executed hauling will bring pleasure and save a lot of money.

The sofa takes pride of place in any apartment. It is very convenient to sit on the sofa in front of the TV, or take a short nap after a busy day.

However, intensive use of this piece of furniture can lead to breakage over time.

If such a nuisance happened to your sofa - do not rush to get upset. In fact, most breakdowns you can fix yourself.

Today we have just a huge number of different types of sofas, which can differ in the type of construction, as well as in the type of upholstery material. We will consider only some of the main varieties.

Types of sofas by coverage:

  • chenille;
  • velor;
  • flock;
  • leather;
  • from leatherette.

Each coating has its own characteristics and properties that will be preferred in various conditions of use - kitchens, living rooms or office spaces with a large number of visitors.

Varieties of folding sofa mechanisms:

Folding:

  • click-clack
  • Book
  • couch

Retractable:

  • Eurobook
  • tick-tock
  • Dolphin
  • Pantograph
  • puma

Unfolding:

  • Folding sofa
  • French cot
  • american cot
  • Accordion

Each type of mechanism allows you to turn an ordinary sofa into a fairly spacious double bed with just one or a few movements. Depending on the specific room, one or another folding design will be the most convenient.

We fix the sofa mechanism with our own hands

If you use the sofa as a bed on a daily basis, then we can say with confidence that the mechanism will have to be repaired first. Let's look at some of the features of the most popular models.

Sofa book

Most often in such sofas the latch mechanism suffers. You raise the seat to release the latch, but it does not work and the seat continues to move with the backrest. In this case, you will have to disassemble the mechanism, and see what is the reason. Most likely, the snap tab is deformed, and then it will need to be returned to its previous position with the help of pliers.

Accordion

This mechanism is quite simple - there are no complex levers and springs that can fail. The weakest points here are the front retractable leg, as well as the connecting loops that connect each of the three sections of the soft part. Make sure that the front leg is correctly positioned after unfolding. Otherwise, it may break on the fastener. But broken hinges will have to be replaced with new ones.

Dolphin

This design provides for a more complex mechanism, which consists of several levers and springs. With this mechanism, the second half of the bed is hidden in the seat of the sofa. For repair, you will have to carefully disassemble the sofa, and carefully examine the details of the mechanism. If there has been a transformation of one of the levers of the mechanism, then you can try to return the previous position with the help of pliers or a hammer. Well, if the metal is cracked, then you need a complete replacement of the mechanism, or at least a broken element.

In any case, if it came to disassembling the mechanism, be sure to lubricate all moving parts with engine oil. It often happens that the mechanism stops working due to dried grease.

How to fix the back of a sofa

Each sofa has a back that allows you to comfortably fall apart in it. But the same element takes on a large load. In addition, animals and children can climb on the back, which also does not give it a long life.

Please note that in most types of sofas the backrest is part of the bed, which means that its condition will fully determine the convenience of the bed itself. If the back is wrinkled, then a dip will appear in the bed, which will not give you the opportunity to sleep well. This primarily applies to books and Click-Klyakov.

To fix the back, you must first disassemble it and look at the condition of the wooden frame. If the frame is broken, then you can try to replace the wooden structural element. We unwind the frame, separate the broken element and select the same one.

It happens that the back falls due to broken springs or frayed foam rubber. In this case, a complete replacement of the spring or foam rubber filler can solve the problem.

Fixing sofa armrests

The main problem of the armrests is the loss of a presentable appearance, as well as loosening. If your armrest has worn out, then a reupholstery is the best solution. At the same time, you can pick up some contrasting material and drag both armrests to beautifully beat everything stylistically.

If the armrest is loosened, then it will need to be properly fixed. To do this, first disassemble it and carefully examine the attachment points. It happens that the attachment points of bolts or screws are flared and then it is already difficult to screw in a new screw or bolt again. In this case, it will be necessary to properly strengthen this place with liquid nails, wood glue or epoxy.

Some armrests have a built-in mechanism that allows you to change the angle of inclination. In most cases, such a mechanism is hidden under the upholstery. If you notice that the armrest does not move or, on the contrary, does not stay in the set position, then the problem is definitely in the mechanism. We'll have to carefully embroider the upholstery and look at the condition of the mechanism. If it is not possible to return the mechanism to its previous state with the help of pliers, then it will be necessary to replace the broken mechanism with a new one.

Ways to fix upholstery

If the damage to the upholstery is very extensive, then, of course, the best way out of this situation would be to completely reupholster the sofa. But if we are talking about a small hole, then you can wait with a full constriction, and try to close the hole with improvised means.

To restore a leather sofa, you can use the following methods:

  1. Patch.
  2. Liquid skin.

To properly install the patch, you need to squeeze the patch into the slot. In this case, you need to choose the skin thicker than the skin of the upholstery. Then you will be able to prevent the appearance of new cracks. After the patch is sewn, it is necessary to treat this area with a shine agent.

To apply the means liquid skin» First of all, degrease the area to be treated. After that, you need to lay the product in the repaired hole, attach a napkin and walk with an iron. This option leaves virtually no traces of repair.

If we are talking about cracked leatherette, then ironing will not work here. You will have to use cold gluing methods. You can also try masking the hole with a liquid polymer. This material is applied with a special spatula, and the result will be almost invisible to the naked eye.

If your sofa is upholstered in tapestry, then darning the hole is the best solution. Place a piece of interlining in the middle of the hole, and carefully try to restore the pattern with threads in color. At the same time, it is not always necessary to repeat the pattern exactly - it will be enough to walk with threads of several colors to mask.

Do it yourself and have fun

As you can see, repairing a sofa is a matter that quite capable even for a non-professional. You need the most minimal set of tools, enthusiasm and some free time!

High-quality upholstered furniture has a high cost, such items require the investment of a significant amount of money. Therefore, the best option for many people is the ability to repair old structures. Instead of broken mechanisms, working ones are purchased, the upholstery is replaced with a new one. You can also use different techniques to update any piece of furniture. Repair of upholstered furniture can be done by hand, if you carefully understand the process and its features.

To repair upholstered furniture, certain tools and materials should be prepared. Standard elements required:

  • A drill equipped with special drills designed to work with wood;
  • Chisels, and it is desirable to prepare several elements from 4 to 40 mm;
  • Planer for the ends of furniture;
  • mallet;
  • clamps;
  • Hammer;
  • Nail puller;
  • Flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • Jigsaw, and it can be manual or electric;
  • Ruler and square, as well as a level that allows you to make perfectly accurate measurements;
  • Hacksaw for metal, which allows manual cutting on wood;
  • Mounting knife;
  • Pliers of different sizes;
  • Furniture stapler equipped with staples, the size of which should vary from 20 to 30 mm;
  • File;
  • Rasp;
  • Wooden block for attaching sandpaper;
  • Scissors;
  • Polished.

The number of tools may be different, it depends on what defects there are in upholstered furniture, as well as what work is planned to be carried out.

Upholstery restoration

Most often, repairs involve the replacement of upholstery, which, due to a long service life, loses its attractiveness. In this case, you can choose repair materials that will be identical to the existing upholstery, as well as some other fabrics or leathers. Restoring the upholstery of upholstered furniture usually involves reupholstering it. Before starting work, you should decide what kind of upholstery will be used. Suitable for this:

  • Genuine leather, which allows you to get really attractive furniture that looks prestigious and expensive. However, it is not recommended to purchase thick leather, whose thickness exceeds 3 mm, as it will not be elastic enough;
  • Artificial leather, which has a low cost, interesting appearance, ease of use and long service life;
  • Textiles, and you can choose different special upholstery fabrics that differ in structure, density, appearance and other parameters.

A photo of the result of the repair of upholstered furniture, which consists in hauling, can be seen below. The attractiveness of the interior item depends on the choice of upholstery material. If leather furniture is being repaired, leather is also selected for upholstery. The upholstery restoration process itself, which involves the replacement of upholstery material, is divided into successive stages:

  • The old upholstery is dismantled;
  • The condition of the stuffing material is checked. Often there is a need to replace it, as it may lose its elasticity;
  • It is advisable to use the removed upholstery as a pattern, which will allow you to get ideally suited elements for the new upholstery;
  • Carry out cutting of new material. It is advisable to give more margin for allowance;
  • If necessary, the stuffing material is replaced;
  • The upholstery is applied to the sections of the structure, after which it is fixed with a stapler, the staples are driven in with a distance of 2 cm;
  • During work, it is important to make sure that the upholstery does not wrinkle or move.

A do-it-yourself upholstered furniture repair master class is considered quite simple, so with the proper approach to this issue there will be no difficulties and you will get a quality result. In addition to hauling, related work can be performed.

Part of the construction Repair specifics
Filling the sofa This part is represented by the material located between the frame and the upholstery. The service life of the sofa, as well as its convenience, depends on its type and quality. Usually this part is replaced together with the upholstery.
Legs and armrests They are auxiliary elements that provide comfortable sitting on upholstered furniture. They can be made from different materials. The armrests have a heavy load throughout the entire period of operation, so their restoration is periodically required. If the legs break, then they need to be completely replaced.
spring block Modern springs in sofas and armchairs are connected to each other with a special spiral. If there are not too many damaged elements, then the fastening of the spiral is loosened from one edge, and on the other hand it is unscrewed like a regular screw. On both sides, the spiral is pulled out and a new element is bought, after which it is twisted to the right place. If a lot of such damage is found, then the purchase of a new block is considered more relevant.

Before direct work, the cause of the breakdown is determined so that in the future there will not be the same problems with new parts.

Mechanism repair

The design of upholstered furniture may vary, so the number of mechanisms in it may differ. Most sofas and armchairs are equipped with special transformation mechanisms, due to which they can be used as a sleeping place. Breakage of various parts requires appropriate repair of upholstered furniture.

The frame acts as the main bearing support for all furniture. Usually made of wood or chipboard, but there are elements made of metal or combining several materials. The durability of the entire product depends on their quality.

If some parts break, then the bars in upholstered furniture need to be replaced, and they may also need to be strengthened. If rotting elements appear, they are also replaced. New bars are well and securely fixed with high-quality fasteners. Most often you have to deal with the repair of the frame. To do this, it is necessary to disassemble the structure, and then determine the degree and cause of damage to the elements.

Most types of sofas and armchairs are equipped with special transformation mechanisms. They allow you to use the structure as a place to sleep. The sofa can be equipped with a dolphin, click-clack, book, pantograph, accordion or other system. If this element breaks down, then it will be difficult to repair the furniture with your own hands, since you will have to change either the entire system or its significant parts. The process of repairing upholstered furniture at home depends on the existing transformation mechanism.

Transformation mechanism Repair specifics
Book Typically, failure is associated with deformation of the rivet located on the guide bar. For repair, the sofa is disassembled, the mechanism is fixed with clamps and the rivet is drilled. Next, a new element is inserted. If there are many breakdowns, then the entire bar, which is fixed with a bolt and nut, is completely replaced.
Accordion Contains a large number of small elements, so repair is considered difficult. Usually it is necessary to replace the rollers or the polyurethane wheel base. Also, the fasteners that fix the lamella break. The rivets are drilled out, and the elements of the required size are selected in their place.
click-clack Problems are often associated with deformation of the body in the seats, which leads to the breakdown of the transformation lock. It is replaced by a new element. Also, the spring often breaks or bursts and the rivets wear out. Repair consists in replacing damaged parts.
Withdrawable Videos created from not very high-quality materials are considered problematic. This is especially true for plastic products, which quickly become unusable due to significant impact. For repair, it is required to drill a bushing that fixes the wheel, after which it is replaced with a new element. Rivets are also replaced by drilling when they fail.

Often, during the repair process, it is found that the armature has retained its reliability, therefore, for repair, it is only necessary to develop the mechanism components or replace the spring. Often the spring stretches significantly, so it should be shortened. If a breakdown of the transformation mechanism is detected, which can burst or deform due to frequent use or excessive load, then you will have to purchase the necessary spare parts that replace the broken elements.

If during the study of the structure it is found that there are broken parts or cracks, then they must be dismantled. Next, you need to measure their dimensions, and it is also desirable to draw a diagram. After that, the necessary parts are cut in the carpentry shop. The new part is attached or glued to the desired section of the frame.

How to update

Warranty conditions for maintenance of upholstered furniture are indicated in the accompanying documentation for any model. They are determined directly by the manufacturer, therefore, in order to increase the service life of the product, it is advisable to follow them exactly. For this, the furniture is used in optimal conditions. It is not allowed to be affected by significant loads and other factors.

Even under proper operating conditions, there is a chance that the design will quickly lose its attractiveness. In addition, after the repair in the apartment, it may simply not fit into the new interior. In such a situation, each owner of a dwelling can independently update upholstered furniture. To do this, different methods of decorating a sofa or chair can be used.

The most commonly used methods for updating furniture are:

  • Sewing covers - if there is no opportunity and desire to replace the upholstery, then to change the style in which the piece of furniture is made, you can use unique covers. They can be created from different fabrics, in different colors and styles, thanks to which you can instantly change the look of any product. Covers can be strict and plain. Some are equipped with numerous ruffles, assemblies or other decorative elements. The advantages of covers include high practicality, since when dirt appears, they can be easily removed and washed. Covers can be sewn with your own hands, for which the optimal material is purchased, the style is selected, measurements are taken. Convenient covers that are fixed with an elastic band on the sofa;
  • Creating an applique - it should ideally fit the piece of furniture and blend well with its upholstery. With the help of it, any flaws in the furniture are hidden. The furniture looks updated and very stylish. Applications are usually sewn directly onto the upholstery, but can also be glued to it;
  • Replacement of upholstery fragments - this type of restoration is considered the most relevant. The design of the furniture remains unchanged, but its appearance is completely changed. The old upholstery is removed, worn fragments are cut out, and new ones are sewn in their place. To decorate the skin, you can choose different types of fabrics or leather, although working with it is quite difficult.

Before restoration work, you should decide in what style the furniture should be made. It depends on what materials should be used in order to comply with current trends - classic style, modern, hi-tech or minimalism.

If stubborn dirt is found on the upholstery, and there is no urgent need to replace it, then it is advisable to give the furniture to dry cleaning.
