Finishing of metal stairs. Stepped plasterboard ceilings (steps on the ceiling) Plasterboard finishing of the stairs service

In country and private houses, especially two-story houses, you can almost always find a staircase. It is often made of metal and does not look very attractive. Moreover, this design is not very safe. This issue is especially relevant if there are small children in the house. Therefore, many owners decide to sheathe it.

The stairs are covered with various materials. All the steps necessary for this can be easily done by hand. Finishing work will help you to give your home an aesthetic look and beauty, which was previously spoiled by the appearance of a metal staircase.

Finishing of a metal staircase is possible with various materials. In this situation, you can sheathe:

  • tree. The best species here will be oak or ash. Just remember that before sheathing, the tree should be treated with a special solution that prevents the appearance of processes that destroy it in the wood;

Wood paneling
Plasterboard finishing

  • drywall. This is the most popular option and is most often used for finishing metal stairs. With this material, you can design any functional or decorative elements. Most often they are made at the bottom of the stairs;
  • MDF plates. Decorating a metal staircase with such a material is also quite common. But it will have a simpler look compared to drywall.

These three materials are the most common finishing materials. However, sometimes the staircase is also covered with plastic panels. But they are less durable and more easily damaged than the above materials.

Benefits of using drywall

Plasterboard sheets are most often used today for DIY finishing work. This is due to the fact that such material has a number of features and advantages that wood and MDF do not have.
The advantages of plasterboard cladding include:

  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • high strength;
  • easy and quick installation;
  • the ability to create the most original and unique designs;
  • the possibility of external finishing of drywall with various materials - paint, gypsum stucco molding, wallpaper, etc.

Plus, such cladding will cost much less than using wood and will have a more beautiful appearance than using MDF.

Choosing a design

With handrails and steps

The staircase in the house can be not only a purely functional element, but also act as some decoration of the room. Therefore, when choosing a design for its design, it is worth considering all the nuances in order to sheathe it as high quality and beautiful as possible.
Note! Correctly selected staircase finishes will help you hide all the flaws it has.
To date, there are the following options for the design of stairs:

  • construction with steps and railings;
  • construction without railings.

Without railings

Depending on the initial design of the staircase, its finishing is possible as follows:

  • with a storage room under the steps. A more functional solution, since in such a pantry you can store many different things that are necessary in everyday life. Such a device is only possible when the ladder is extended;

With pantry
No pantry

  • no storage room. Simple design option. It is impossible to design a pantry here, since such stairs have a swirling device, where each loop is located above the previous one.

Also, instead of a pantry under the steps, you can make a decorative niche, which will give the hunky a more sophisticated look.
As you can see, there are several design options for stairs. And each of them has its own characteristics and functionality. Therefore, before choosing a design type, consider all the pros and cons of the chosen design.

Draw

After choosing the type of design and cladding material, it is necessary to evaluate all the nuances of the upcoming work using a drawing. This is a very important stage, which will allow you to think over all the details with maximum precision and efficiently cope with the upcoming process.
To develop a drawing, you need to do the following calculations:

Ladder drawing

  • measure the length and height of the structure;
  • it is necessary to measure the width of the steps and the distance between them;
  • we determine the height of the railing. For an adult, they can be about 1 meter high. But there are children in the house, then the railings should be equipped with additional protective elements, which are located in the vertical plane. Here you need to determine the step between these elements so that children cannot fall into the space between them.

Display all these calculations to scale on a piece of paper, and you will have a drawing.
Next, you need to apply sheathing elements and attachment points to it. This will make it clear how many materials you need, and also a clear plan for further actions will form in your head.

Choosing tools

To sheathe a ladder with your own hands from a set of tools, you will need:

  • screwdriver or drill with a set of drills;
  • building level;
  • tape measure, regular pencil and marker;
  • corners;
  • plumb lines and ruler;
  • non-woven fabric;
  • a set of spatulas;
  • scissors for metal and a knife for working with drywall.

In case of a shortage of some tool, you can always ask your friends, neighbors or buy it in a hardware store.
From the list of materials you should have at hand;

  • sheets of drywall or other finishing material;
  • metal profiles. To create a frame, you can also use wooden slats;
  • fasteners - screws, dowels, screws;
  • serpyanka;
  • putty;
  • primer.

After preparing the necessary materials and tools, you can start finishing the stairs.

Start faster - finish earlier

Decorating stairs with plasterboard or any other material with your own hands consists of two main stages:

  • arrangement of the stairs itself;
  • balustrade design.

Let's consider each of these stages in more detail.

Start of registration

Plating the staircase itself is a very meticulous process that requires concentration and close attention. The instructions below will help you effectively and efficiently cope with the required amount of work.
To sheathe the stairs, you need to do the assembly and sheathing of the frame.

Ladder frame

Note! Without a frame, it will be impossible to decorate the staircase with plasterboard sheets.

This requires the following manipulations:

  • first, at the bottom of the stairs, on the floor, we make markings for the profile;
  • along the marking line, set the starting profile around the entire perimeter. The step of fixing the dowels here is 10-15 cm;
  • when the perimeter is completed, we begin to display the frame in height. To do this, insert the rack rails into the starting profile;
  • each rack profile must correspond to the level of either a step or a balustrade;
  • the rack profiles must also be fastened together with longitudinal jumpers. This will increase the rigidity of the structure and make it more durable.

Note! The frame should contain the foundations for all planned elements: balustrades, niches, storage rooms, etc.

After the construction of the frame, it is necessary to sheathe it with sheets of drywall. Here, the finishing is carried out as follows:

  • we cut the sheets to the required sizes. Since the staircase has multilevel elements, you will have to cut a lot. Cut very carefully so as not to damage the sheets;
  • pieces of sheets must be exactly fitted to the parameters of the frame in each specific place;
  • sheathing begins with the largest and most voluminous pieces. Therefore, you need to follow from top to bottom. Usually the smallest pieces are attached from below;
  • drywall is attached to the profiles with self-tapping screws in increments of 10-15 cm.

Sheathing with sheets

Try to sheathe the structure so that there are no gaps between the sheets. They should fit as tightly as possible to each other.
After the staircase has been sheathed, we proceed to the formation of the balustrade.

We design a balustrade

The balustrade is not only a decorative decoration of the stairs, but also serves as an element of safety, especially for children. Usually it is constructed only from the side that faces the observer. The other side can be simply finished with any material you like.

Balustrade on the stairs

The installation of such an element is also determined by the perspective of the structure, what kind of interior is there, etc. Therefore, in some situations, the balustrade may not be made.
In the absence of a balustrade, the corners of the structure are closed with a perforated corner.

The final stage

After all the above steps have been completed, we install the railings and carry out the final finishing:

  • on the joints of the plates we glue the serpyanka, and we process the corners with non-woven fabric;
  • putty all the joints of the plates and screwing in the self-tapping screws;
  • we clean all the irregularities and prime the structure.

Now you can give the staircase, sheathed with your own hands, the final appearance. Most often it is painted with dark or light paint colors, depending on the color scheme of the interior, or trimmed with wood and artificial stone. You can also use plaster moldings.
By following the instructions above, the staircase will be finished quickly, efficiently and efficiently. She can become a real treasure of your interior, and the result will satisfy you 100 percent. And all this will be possible thanks to the unique properties of drywall, perfect for finishing.

There are a number of issues to consider. After all, a flight of stairs is not only the shortest and most convenient way to move between floors, but also an element of interior design. Therefore, it is very important to consider the type of staircase finishing when designing. An improperly selected finishing material will not only lead to disharmony in the interior of the house, but will make your home uncomfortable. This is especially true for stairs made of concrete.

Correctly selected cladding of the structure will not only give a unique look to the house, but also allow it to serve for a longer time. At the same time, you will not be in danger, you will not have to be distracted by premature repairs and experience discomfort at the same time.

Facing steps

As a facing material for steps of a concrete staircase, tiles are ideal, preferably with an anti-slip coating, made of porcelain stoneware or clicker materials. Such tiles are most often ready-made steps. Finding the right shape and size is not difficult. It is now quite widespread on the market. This material is best combined with skirting boards mounted on both sides.

Before starting work, all cracks, crevices and chips of a concrete staircase are eliminated using a cement-sand mortar or a self-leveling floor. The very facing of straight flights of stairs must be started from the bottom step. The procedure for finishing with porcelain stoneware is very simple and is no different from simple laying of tiles. After complete laying of the tiles, it is necessary to wipe all the joints with grout to give an aesthetic appearance. Of course, for such work, you can call professionals, but an ordinary person can cope with this.

Plasterboard stairs

In houses where the stairs are connected to the wall, or the owners have a desire to hide the stairs and adjust it to the overall design composition, drywall will serve as the best cladding material. In addition, this type of material will easily hide all the defects of the staircase. After the completion of the work, it will be possible to decorate or paint picturesquely with paints or other materials.

Regardless of what type of stairs you have - concrete or metal, when planning as a plasterboard facing material, it is necessary to create a metal frame from profiles for covering the stairs.

First of all, when constructing a metal frame, you need to imagine how exactly the surface of the structure will look like? The further interior of the whole house may depend on this. With the right approach and maximum effort, this will not be difficult.

Then, sheets of drywall are cut according to the built structure. This is done using an ordinary construction knife. It is important at this stage to take into account all irregularities and defects in order to eliminate them in a timely manner.

Fasten drywall sheets with screws. You should not save them and use them too often. It is necessary to fit the sheets to each other so that there are no gaps. And if it so happened that the gap still remains, then the entire sheet should be replaced immediately. Otherwise, you risk distorting the entire structure.

After the completion of all work, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the room. Gypsum dust and crumbs that can fall from sheets are harmful to health, especially for small children. Therefore, take all necessary measures to prevent dust from entering the respiratory tract.

That's it, the finishing of the concrete staircase is complete and you can admire the work you've done.

If you have a staircase in your house or you are planning its appearance, you need to think about what material it will be trimmed with. The appearance of the staircase will determine the appearance of the whole house.

However, the stairs play an important role not only in aesthetic terms, they are also part of the safe movement around the house.

In the house where there are children, safety is above all, which means that it is worth taking care of it first. The strength of stairways, reinforcements, and, accordingly, the safety of you and your loved ones in the house will depend on what material you prefer when cladding.

Tools and materials for work

Tool for plasterboard wall cladding: screwdriver, tape measure, level, marker, plumb line and others.

Wood and drywall are now considered relevant materials. The plasterboard staircase has a rather attractive appearance and allows home owners to build it into any structures and walls of their home.

To sheathe the stairs with plasterboard, you will need:

  • screws (self-tapping screws);
  • level;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • construction knife;
  • construction tools;
  • metallic profile;
  • non-woven fabric;
  • corners;
  • overalls.

As a rule, plasterboard cladding is chosen in those houses where the stair railings will be built into the wall, or where there is a need to "hide" part of the staircase into the interior. It can also help in those houses where there are columns or antique stoves. They are disguised, masterfully fitting into the style of the house.

The most ideal option to hide irregularities and some kind of defects is to sheathe the stairs, drywall is perfect for this. This pliable material can be painted or painted to match the interior in which the staircase will be installed.

If you have already decided on, then you should choose which part of it will hide under the skin. Then you can start measuring to understand how many sheets of material you need to complete the job.

Stages of cladding work

Sheathing stairs is a scrupulous business that requires attention and concentration, but if you give maximum effort, the process will not take much time.

The first stage of the work will be the preparation of the metal frame, on which the drywall will subsequently be attached. Sheathe the stairs with plasterboard will not work if you do not install a metal frame. It should be made in the same size as you see the "clothes" of the flight of stairs.

The second step is to adjust the elements of the drywall sheets to the dimensions of the frame. Drywall is very easy to cut, you just need to put the sheet on a flat surface or put something under it. It is better to cut with a construction knife. You need to cut everything according to the holes and bends. Using a pencil, it is best to mark the places where the screws will cut.

To sheathe a staircase, you should not save screws, however, you do not need to install them frequently. The metal frame is quite capable of holding an array of sheets of the material used. It is necessary to adjust drywall sheets so that there are no gaps. It is important to take into account all the irregularities. At the stage of fastening the frame and sheets of material with screws, with the formation of cracks and irregularities, they must be eliminated immediately in order to avoid deformation of the skin.

Our topic today is plasterboard stairs. We will find out for what purpose the gypsum board can be used in the construction of interfloor staircases, what are the limitations of its use and how to properly perform the installation and finishing of gypsum plasterboard structures.

First, about the restrictions:

  • A plasterboard staircase is just a name indicating the material of the decorative finish. GCR, due to its fragility, cannot be a load-bearing element of a loaded structure. Any staircase needs a solid frame - steel or wood;

  • Plasterboard stairs are used only indoors. On the street, GKL is not used at all. Even moisture resistant. Gypsum is gypsum: neither moisture-resistant cardboard shell nor antifungal impregnation will protect from its hygroscopicity;
  • In general, the author strongly advises to assemble drywall structures only on a frame made of galvanized profiles: unlike a bar, it is not prone to deformation due to fluctuations in humidity, it is not afraid of insects and rot. However, plasterboard plastering of stairs is almost always carried out on a frame made of timber and boards. The reason is obvious: it is much easier to attach them to steel supporting elements;

Captain Evidence suggests: wooden ladders are often sheathed directly along the bowstrings, without the construction of an additional frame.

  • It is not worth making treads from gypsum plasterboard. Even if tiles are to be laid on them. The tile does not withstand significant bending loads and will not protect fragile drywall from punching.

What can and should you use drywall for?

It is used for:

  • Steel frame masking;
  • Giving a smooth surface to the inclined ceiling of the room under the span... It is often used as a storage room, a compact bathroom or a bathroom;

Note: Unlike wood filing, plasterboard finishing allows the stairs to be tiled. Tiles with worn seams will reliably protect the gypsum board from the high humidity typical of baths and toilets.

  • Fencing frame cladding(wood or metal). A solid fence is especially desirable if there are small children in the house;

  • Partition structures enclosing the room under the stairs;
  • Wall decoration adjacent to the flight of stairs.

Frame construction

How to hem a steel-framed staircase with plasterboard?

Obviously, first you need to sheathe it with a bar, building an additional frame - already directly for attaching the gypsum board. At this stage, we will face several problems.

Material

The frame bar should be:

  1. Having the correct geometric shape (without humps and propellers). You can sort the warped timber by checking it with the rule or simply by looking along its surface along a tangent;
  2. Free from dropping out knots larger than a third of the section, oblique stratum, oblique cracks and rot;
  3. Dry (10-12% humidity). The so-called natural moisture wood will inevitably warp during the drying process.

Hint: for the construction of the frame under the gypsum board, wood of inexpensive conifers is usually used - pine, spruce and fir.

For reliable protection against warpage and biological influences, it is advisable to impregnate the bar with linseed oil heated in a water bath or any other water-repellent impregnation.

Fastening

How to fix a bar or boards to a profile pipe of a steel frame? The answer depends on what kind of loads the corresponding node will be subjected to.

Image Description

For loaded connections (for example, attaching the balusters of the stairs to the frame), both parts are drilled and bolted with wide washers on the side of the bar. The washer distributes the load over the wood surface.

For an unloaded frame, you can use the installation of a bar with self-tapping screws for metal with press washers and drills.

Plasterboard sheathing

How to sheathe a staircase with plasterboard on a finished wooden frame?

Cutting parts

On curved or broken lines, drywall is cut with a narrow hacksaw with medium teeth or, much faster, with a jigsaw with a saw for wood. The saw teeth should be directed upward, towards the base of the jigsaw, otherwise the tool will be repelled by them from the cut, and it will turn out to be uneven.

Caution: When cutting, a large amount of dust is lifted into the air, which then settles on all accessible surfaces. The room must be freed from furniture and household appliances, the doors to the adjacent rooms must be securely closed and, if possible, all windows must be opened.

It is more convenient not to cut along straight lines of the gypsum board, but to break it, having previously cut it by a quarter to a third of the thickness.

The step-by-step instruction looks like this:

  1. Mark the edge line;
  2. Press a steel ruler, angle or profile along the line;
  3. Several times with force draw the GCR along the ruler with a knife;

  1. Place the sheet with a notch on the edge of a table or other elevation (for example, on a stack of sheets of drywall awaiting their turn) and break it off;
  2. Cut off the back of the carton;
  3. If there are protrusions on the edge that interfere with you, remove them with a plane.

Fastening

How is plastering of gypsum stairs done by hand? It's very simple: the cut-off parts are attached to the wooden frame with phosphated self-tapping screws 25 mm long. You can use self-tapping screws both for drywall and wood: their price is the same, and the differences are reduced only to different thread pitch.

However: with two-layer cladding, the second layer is mounted with 40 mm fasteners.

A few subtleties:

  • The step between the attachment points should not be more than 20 cm on vertical surfaces and 15 cm when hemming the span from below;
  • Self-tapping screws should not be screwed closer than a couple of centimeters from the edge of the sheet, otherwise it may crumble;
  • When screwing several self-tapping screws into a bar at a minimum distance from each other, they should be arranged with a snake so as not to split the wooden frame element along the fibers.

The decoration of the staircase in a stone house is often carried out without a frame: the gypsum board is glued to the walls with the help of mounting gypsum glue. It is successfully replaced by plaster putty.

The fastening process is very simple: glue is applied with cakes on the sheet itself or on the walls of the opening, after which the gypsum board is pressed against the walls and leveled according to the rule or a long level with light blows.

Prefinishing finishing

A plasterboard staircase with installed treads and risers must be prepared for finishing. As a rule, water-dispersion paint acts as a finishing coating for gypsum board. Here are the preparation steps.

Joining and reinforcement of seams

From the rectangular edges of parts that were cut off in place, you need to chamfer 2/3 of the thickness of the drywall. This is easiest to do with a clerical knife. The goal is to allow the putty to penetrate as deeply as possible into the joint when it is putty.

The captain tells the obvious: semicircular factory PLUK edges do not need joining.

Then all the seams are glued with a reinforcing fiberglass mesh with an adhesive layer - serpyanka. Reinforcement will avoid the appearance of cracks at the seams due to changes in the linear dimensions of drywall sheets with fluctuations in humidity and temperature.

Putty preparation

Gypsum universal or finishing putty is prepared from a dry mix immediately before use. The life of the building mixture after mixing with water does not exceed an hour, therefore it is prepared in small portions (no more than 3-4 kg).

How to do it:

  1. Pour 1.5 liters of water into a clean and as wide container as possible (for example, a plastic paint bucket);

  1. Add 2.4 kg of dry mixture, scattering it as evenly as possible over the mirror of water;
  2. Let the plaster swell for five minutes and mix with a spatula, construction mixer, or a whisk clamped in a screwdriver.

Attention: if you pour water into dry gypsum, lumps will form at the bottom, which will be very difficult to break when mixing.

Putty

The seams are putty in two steps:

  1. At first, the seam is tightly filled through the serpyanka cells;
  2. After the first layer has dried, the serpyanka is covered with the second one using a wide spatula.

Often times, the lining of the stairs has to be putty over the entire surface. The fact is that the seams between the edges of the sheets cut in place, thanks to the serpentine, stand out in thickness. If you apply a millimeter layer of putty to the entire finish, the surface to be painted will be perfectly flat.

Finishing touches

After puttingtying, it remains for us to put a few last strokes on our masterpiece:

  • Grinding of the putty is carried out after it is completely dry with a hand float or sander. Remember to protect your eyes from plaster dust. It is necessary to grind with the brightest light falling at an oblique angle, which shade out all the irregularities;

  • Then the filing of the stairs is swept from plaster dust or vacuumed;
  • The last stage before finishing is the priming of the gypsum board with penetrating primer. The type of binder should match the type of paint you choose: latex for latex paint, silicone for silicone, etc.

Conclusion

As you can see, stairs and drywall go well together. The video in this article will help you learn more about using gypsum plasterboard for finishing work. Good luck!
