The right brazier with your own hands made of metal. Do-it-yourself grill

The air, in which you can smell meat or vegetables roasted on coals, will not leave anyone indifferent, even a vegetarian. A barbecue cooked on the grill excites with memories of a clear spring day or a warm summer evening when we were relaxing on the shore of the lake or at our dacha. There is a desire to repeat it again.

A tradition has firmly entered our life when not a single picnic or gathering around an evening fire with friends and family is complete without cooking meat over an open fire.

With sincere conversations, the waiting time passes faster and jointly fried meat delicacy, it becomes tastier. The brazier made by our own hands, in this matter, is our best friend and helper!

Types of barbecues: the advantages and disadvantages of each of them

The following factors directly affect the choice of a barbecue model - the frequency of use, its location, the amount you need to invest in when buying materials if you want to make a barbecue on your own. Taking these points into account, the most suitable product is selected. Braziers are:

Stationary... Massive structures that are placed on a base, most often concrete. Brick and cast-iron barbecues are immovable. Best suited for country houses, roadside cafes. They are rightfully considered the most solid and heat-resistant. Cast iron products are decorated with carvings and floral designs. If you build a gazebo for such a barbecue and, with forged elements, a single original composition will come out. A brick brazier is decorated with masonry made of facing material, a chimney is built, a place for a cauldron, an oven, a niche for storing firewood is allocated. For convenience, a tabletop is mounted for cutting food and serving. Such structures will last for many years, but installing them on your site will entail significant financial costs and it may be difficult to find a suitable place.

Portable... They have a metal case, which can be collapsible, for one-time trips to nature and welded. Welded structures are used in suburban and garden plots. The advantage of such a barbecue is the ability to rearrange it from one place to another. When the metal brazier is not used, it is disassembled and stored in a dry room. These measures will help to avoid rusting of the elements and thereby extend the service life.

Braziers made of metal, which are convenient to take to nature, should be easily and quickly assembled and disassembled, and also have a low weight. This is an advantage, but the main disadvantage follows from it - not durability, therefore the case quickly burns out and deforms.

Advice! On the occasion of using a camping grill, it is better to kindle firewood in a fire, and in the grill itself, then put ready-made coals, which will extend its life.

Technical features of the barbecue: the correct dimensions

Which barbecue is the right one, only you decide, but you need to make it, adhering to certain standard parameters that are adjusted to the requirements of the place of use, the number of eaters and external preferences.

It is necessary to adhere to them so that the meat does not burn, but does not remain raw, firewood is consumed economically, the heat does not go into the air. Product parameters that you need to pay attention to:

Barbecue wall height... Depth is of the utmost importance. Metal and cast-iron models can withstand not only the weight of coals, but also firewood. If you assume that you will use firewood when firing up, then make the depth up to 30 cm, since firewood takes up more space. When using the grate, the coals should be located closer to it, and if you are making meat on skewers, then the maximum distance from the coals to the meat is about 20 cm.When it is less, the pieces burn, and if more, then the heat will not be enough. This will cause the kebab to dry out on top and remain soggy on the inside.

Length... When calculating it, it should be understood that the longer the brazier, the more difficult it is to move it, the consumption of coal will also increase, and it will be more difficult to maintain the optimal temperature regime. It is customary to take 100 cm as a basis. For most summer residents, 60-80 cm is enough.

The optimal size will help to calculate the formula... The length of the barbecue is equal to the required number of skewers, multiplied by the distance between them. Example: 6 skewers * 10cm (the gap between them) = 60cm (the length of the barbecue we need). This size is enough for a company of three. The meat is cooked in one go. The desired spacing between the skewers is 7-10cm. Then the meat is close, but not tight to each other, which contributes to uniform heating and a beautiful crust is formed.

Width... The optimal size is 30-40 cm. A standard skewer can hold 5-6 pieces of meat. On a grill with such a width, it will be easy to choose a grill for. You can find it at any hardware store.

The height of the barbecue from the ground... For portable folding barbecues, the required leg height is about 30 cm. If you do it higher, the structure will be unstable, and below it, dust and debris can get into the food. For stationary products - 80-100 cm, it will be the best solution.

When you make the brazier yourself, then you need to make the height for the person who will be the cook. If he is comfortable, then the food will be especially tasty.

Brazier models: Do it yourself really

The most acceptable option for manufacturing by a beginner is a stationary metal brazier. Taking into account all the listed recommendations, it is necessary to make a drawing of the product that meets your requirements.

For the production of a rectangular model, on four legs, prepare a sheet of metal (thickness from 1-3 mm.), A welding machine, a grinder, metal corners for the legs, a drill (drill holes in the sides), fasteners.

Stages of making a brazier with your own hands from iron:

  • Mark the bottom and walls on a sheet of iron with chalk.
  • Along the lines of the basting, we cut out the shape of the barbecue with a grinder.
  • We bend the side walls up and weld to each other. It turns out a box.
  • We make holes in the sidewalls with a drill for air circulation.
  • We cut the grooves for the skewers.
  • We weld the legs to the corners of the box. We sharpen it from below, for better grip with the soil.

To increase the strength, you can strengthen the walls with metal, horizontal rods that are tightened with nuts. It will be necessary to pre-drill holes in the sides for screws.

If you have experience, you can make the product more complicated - with an additional grate that lowers the intensity of the flame, shelves for firewood, add decorative forged elements.

Craftsmen are still altering cylinders for a gas grill, with a capacity of 40 liters. If you have a balloon like this, it is perfect because it has thick walls and an interesting shape. The product can be made in 2 versions - with and without a hinged lid.

Approximate algorithm of actions:

  1. The saw cuts off half the height of the barrel or cuts out its side segment. The cut off part can serve as a lid in the future.
  2. The container is placed on a support made of iron or pipes. To give a neat look, we close the cut with a corner.
  3. If the grill, you will use it as a barbecue, then inside the cylinder we install runners under the grill.
  4. We attach the lid to the barrel with hinges.
  5. To increase functionality, a chimney is brought out into the side wall and then the installation will work like a smokehouse.

Do-it-yourself brick brazier

Everyone knows that a brick retains heat for a long time and therefore it is wonderful to cook on such a grill both kebab, meat on the grill, and pilaf, fish soup. The choice of dishes is limited only by your cook's imagination.

If there is enough free space on the site, it is advisable to combine a brick brazier with a gazebo or a place for a dining area. The building occupies a decent area, has a foundation and cannot be removed or moved, so be careful when choosing a place.

The foundation is poured with a tape, going deep into the ground by half a meter. The material that fits perfectly is natural stone and oven bricks. Fireplace laying requires knowledge and skills, so entrust this process to a specialist if you are not confident in your abilities.

When you undertake to erect yourself, then consult the master, do everything carefully and slowly.

Boldly bring your ideas to life. On sale there are all the materials necessary for the manufacture of a barbecue - steel, cast iron, brick and stone. Following building codes and choosing a place, in compliance with fire safety techniques, you organize an oasis on your site, where you can fully relax, recharge with energy, with friends and family. Good luck to you!

Photo examples of homemade barbecues

The metal brazier is the easiest to manufacture. Therefore, it is the most common, especially among those people who like to do something with their own hands and constantly rest in the country or in nature.

Braziers made of metal are:

Portable can be fully or partially collapsible.

Folding products

The first type is a single structure that can be folded into portable case... These metal barbecues are designed for tourists. Therefore, their features are:

  • small size;
  • relatively low weight.

Most of the drawings of such braziers provide for a brazier with dimensions of 45x26x16 cm (LxWxH). It is not very suitable for a large company, because it will take a very long time to cook a barbecue.

Another feature of the correct folding braziers is the special material. For their manufacture, use thin fire-resistant stainless steel... At the same time, all loops are also made from it with their own hands. Thanks to this, the grill is quite light in weight.

Stainless steel is very easy to clean from soot... It is enough to wipe it with a rag, and its mirror-like appearance returns. Therefore, a folding brazier can be put in a backpack and not worry that something inside will get dirty.

Folding barbecues are also made of sheet metal. They can be of the above dimensions, but also can be larger. The products are a bit heavy and therefore suitable for short trips. Such designs are a good option when there is very little space in the car.

Collapsible and stationary models

Portable fully collapsible barbecues can also be folded compactly. However, the compactness will be worse than that of folding ones. After all, the scheme provides for large parts. Moreover, the creators use racks with a height of 1 m... They are much larger than similar elements of a folding barbecue. Due to their large size and height, collapsible portable barbecues create great comfort during barbecue cooking.

Partially demountable models and their sketches provide for the possibility of removing the legs. The roaster is a one-piece construction.

Stationary ones are heavy and can only be carried around the courtyard. They are distinguished by a large number of beautiful decorative elements. Many of them are. Such braziers have a brazier almost the same as in collapsible structures. All other elements are beautifully designed and depend on the imagination of the creator. Often such barbecues resemble fairy tale characters, a train, cars and any other objects. Many stationary barbecues are built into the roof frame.

Ideal model

Its features depend on the shape of the brazier. Each shape has its own optimal size.

The drawing of an ideal classic rectangular metal barbecue has the following features:

  1. Width - 250 mm... This is enough to accommodate 6-8 pieces of meat. With this value, all pieces, including those in the middle, receive heat from the longitudinal side walls. This heat is needed to form a golden brown crust. If you make the width wider, then the middle pieces will be crustless.
  2. Length - about 1 m... In this case, it is taken into account that 8-12 cm should fall on one skewer. Also, a margin of 5 cm on both sides is taken into account. It turns out that 8 skewers can be placed in a meter-long barbecue. This is quite enough for an average company. A great length should not be done, because the cook will have to run from one end to the other. It is more convenient to stand in one place.
  3. Height - 200 mm... The optimum height is 150 mm. However, firewood is different and gives off its own amount of heat.
  4. Vertical cutouts in the longitudinal side walls. Their length should be 50 mm... This value will allow you to select the height of the skewers, depending on the type of firewood. The meat should be 30-70 mm away from the coals.
  5. Holes in the bottom... There should be a lot of them. The diameter of each hole should be done 10-15 mm... The distance between the holes and the rows of holes should be up to 20-30 mm. Drawings of an ideal barbecue may include a mesh bottom. This is better because the air flow to the coals is increased. The mesh should be made of wire with a diameter greater than 4 mm.
  6. Thickness metal walls - 2 mm and even better 4-6 mm... This will ensure a long service life and create the necessary heat for barbecuing.
  7. The height of the entire structure depends on the height of the cook. In most cases - 1 m.

How to make the perfect model

First you need draw a drawing with your own hands... In doing so, the aforementioned rules are observed. The drawing will allow you to determine the dimensions of each side wall. During its drawing, it is determined with the implementation of the possibility of parsing the barbecue. If possible, the length of the side walls should be increased by 2 cm. These additional centimeters will be curved edges. That is, 1 cm of each side, which will adjoin the posts, will need to be bent at an angle of 90 °. 1 cm of the bottom edge of the sides of any brazier also needs to be folded. This is done inside the structure.

According to the drawn up drawing cut the prepared sheet metal and shaped pipe or corners. Holes are drilled in the bottom. Slots are made in the longitudinal side walls. In the case of a completely collapsible structure, two long openings are made in the racks. Their length should be equal to the height of the brazier. The imaginary lines that will pass through the openings must form a right angle.

If you create a non-separable brazier with your own hands, then first weld the sidewalls. Next, racks are welded to them. You don't have to weld it. This will improve the portability of the design. In this case, each pair of racks must be made in the form of the letter "H". In this case, the ends of the racks should be 1-2 cm higher than the horizontal partition. For reliable fixation to the sides of the brazier at the level of the top of the racks, you can weld 4 protruding metal squares with dimensions of 2x2 cm. These squares and racks will need to be fastened with hooks in the shape of the letter "P".

For added stability, you can sharpen the ends of the posts to drive them into the ground.

Throat model

This grill resembles a large bottle. The design consists of three parts:

  1. Wide cylinder. Its height is 180-200 mm.
  2. The cut off cone. Height - 100-150 mm.
  3. Narrow cylinder. It has a height equal to 100-150 mm.

The lower part has many holes in it. They are found not only in the bottom, but also in the side walls. The upper ones are made at a height of 130 mm. The presence of side vents is a very interesting feature. Correct barbecues should not have such holes, since through them a lot of oxygen comes to the meat. It changes the chemical processes in the meat, and the dish does not turn out the way it should be.

However, in the case of cooking meat on this grill, this is not the case because so much wood is burned in the brazier that the side holes are blocked by coals. With the gradual smoldering of the coals, the holes will become free, but until then the process of cooking meat is complete. As a result, some of the firewood is wasted.

Brazier is the main attribute of a suburban picnic and a comfortable holiday in the country. You can buy this accessory today in any supermarket. Unfortunately, almost all factory structures are made of thin metal, which begins to deform and burn out after the first "barbecue season".

The creators have not always thought out the system for assembling the frying box, the connections of which, when used, turn out to be inconvenient and unreliable.

Knowing the problems of serial braziers, home craftsmen prefer their own braziers. In addition to the impressive strength of homemade designs, they allow creators to fully demonstrate their talent and creativity. It is for these reasons that we will consider in detail the topic of how to make a brazier out of metal with our own hands, convenient, durable and beautiful.

In addition to traditional designs, you can find unique options among homemade products. Each of them can be copied without any problems, decorating your summer cottage with an original and useful frying installation.

Metal brazier designs

The simplest and easiest to manufacture brazier for field conditions - two U-shaped metal racks stuck into the ground. They take up a minimum of space in the backpack and are quickly brought into the "working position". The only drawback of this system is its low height.

It will not work to put such a grill at a level convenient for baking, because the fire here is kindled right on the ground. Otherwise, this design captivates users with its practicality.

A classic metal brazier - a box on legs also has the right to a camping life. Only for this it needs to be made foldable in order to reduce the size.

For this, window hinges are most often used, welding them to the bottom and long side walls. The end sides of such a brazier are inserted into the sides of the bottom and attached from above to the side walls using hooks.

A useful detail to look out for are the holes for adjusting the frying height. Thanks to them, you do not have to re-ignite the hearth in order to "turn on the heat".

If you think that the imagination of homemade people is limited to a banal frying box with holes, then we can easily convince you.

Childhood memories of pirate battles inspired the author with the idea of a brazier-treasure chest mounted on two scimitar swords. In addition to the usual frying of kebabs, such a box with a lid can be used as a mini-smokehouse. To do this, you will need to provide the structure with a small chimney.

In general, forging is a win-win decoration for any brazier. With its help, you can easily turn an ordinary iron grill into a real piece of "country art".

A useful part of this design is the side shelf. On it you can lay out kebabs that have passed the heat treatment process. Below you can make a grate for storing firewood.

Any home craftsman can make a forged brazier today. This does not require building a home forge and buying a blacksmith's hammer. It is enough to look into the building supermarket and buy forged decorative elements there. Fixing them on a metal box and legs is a simple matter.

A steel grill for a summer residence should be not only beautiful, but also mobile. Therefore, we advise you to pay attention to the mobile version of such a frying hearth.

It can be easily moved to any place in the summer cottage, hiding from sudden rain or the scorching rays of the sun. Equip your brazier with a handy spit and try your hand at roasting upland game.

Of course, you will not take such a frying structure with you to the forest. However, it will look at the summer cottage no worse than a stationary one.

And here is a copy with a roof that protects the owner from the vagaries of changeable weather. The swivel holder for the cauldron, which expands the capabilities of this hearth, deserves special attention.

Do not rush to part with your grandmother's inheritance and hand over a foot-operated sewing machine to scrap metal. Better to see how excellent its cast iron frame looks as a support platform for the barbecue.

The smoke from the brazier disturbs the creative imagination of the craftsmen. Why not make an original brazier-steam locomotive, they think, sitting down to the drawing?

The main part of this brazier is an old gas cylinder. By welding wheels, a pipe and a driver's platform to it, you will pleasantly surprise your friends and neighbors. By the way, the chimney in this case is not a simple decoration, but a channel for the exit of smoke. Such a hearth with a smokehouse can be successfully used for roasting meat and preparing other homemade delicacies.

The military theme, steeped in smoke and fire, often finds its expression in original installations.

A car enthusiast who is friends with a grinder and welding will be happy to make an original brazier out of the front end of an old car. Fortunately, such work does not require special efforts. A traditional broiler box with a grate is placed in the engine compartment and the structure is ready to go.

Some craftsmen manage to make such a grill mobile, supplying it with a full-fledged suspension with springs.

Take a look around. You will see many unnecessary metal items that can be used to make a barbecue.

An old steel barrel is an almost finished brazier. Yes, not simple, but elegant and functional. By cutting out a part of the sidewall, you can make a rotary cover from it. A frying grate is placed inside the container or two supporting corners are welded for installing skewers.

Rims. What could be better and easier for making a country barbecue? They have all the attributes of such a hearth: a round shape, ventilation holes and thick metal that will not burn through a fire soon. The only improvement that needs to be made is the installation of a perforated steel plate inside the disc.

Native slots on the disc are a little too big, so small coals will fall through them. A steel skewer holder can be adapted into the rim from above, or you can simply install a grill rack of a suitable diameter on it.

Optimal size and ease of use

Someone else's ideas are good, but how to make such a brazier yourself, you ask? First you need to decide for how many people kebabs will most often be prepared. If only members of your family (3-4 people) are among the lucky ones, then the optimal sizes are 40 cm long and 30 cm wide. The last size is the length of the skewer excluding the handle. It cannot be increased so that the steel rod with meat does not fall into the brazier.

If the grill will serve a large company, then its length is calculated according to the scheme 8-10 cm per 1 skewer. That is, for a company of 6 people, a frying box with a length of 50 to 60 cm is needed with a constant width of 30 cm. A more voluminous box should not be made so that there is no overconsumption of firewood.

The optimum depth of the brazier is 15-20 cm. This is quite enough for the temperature during baking to be high enough, but the meat does not burn.

Ergonomics is another factor that must be taken into account when sketching out a diagram of the future barbecue. Its height from the ground should be such that you do not have to constantly bend over, turning over the kebabs. Lower your arm, bend it slightly at the elbow and measure the distance from the ground to your fingertips. The resulting size is the optimal height of the barbecue with legs.

The plate thickness for the brazier must also be selected correctly. Experts say that 2 mm black or stainless steel will be optimal. A thinner sheet quickly burns out, and a thicker one is difficult to process and increases the weight of the structure.

An example of making a simple metal barbecue

The toolbox for this job is obvious:

  • Roulette;
  • Kern (for filling holes before drilling);
  • Bulgarian;
  • Electric drill;
  • Welding machine.

The first step, from which the manufacture of a homemade barbecue from metal begins, is cutting sheet steel. Having marked on it the dimensions of the bottom and side walls, we cut out all the blanks with a grinder. At the bottom of the long side walls, we need to make holes for the air to enter. To do this, we fix a 6 or 8 mm drill in the drill chuck and make ventilation (the distance between the centers of the holes is 3-4 cm).

A more rational option is not to cut out all the parts separately, but to make slots in the sheet with a grinder, so that you can then bend them into a volumetric structure.

Having bent the cut sheet into a volumetric box, we boil the joints of the walls. This can be done not with a solid, but with a tack weld, so that the metal is less deformed. For better fixation of the skewers, shallow grooves can be cut on the upper ribs of the long walls.

The next operation is the welding of the legs. Better to make them removable so that the brazier can be transported in the car. For this, some craftsmen use nuts, welding them to the bottom of the bottom. Then threaded rods are screwed into them. We'll do it easier and use the lower parts of the old door hinges. They have a weld-on eyelet and a hole deep enough to fit a steel pin-leg.

Our grill is ready for the first barbecue. All operations for cutting and assembling it will take no more than 2 hours.

Barbecue cooking is one of the most favorite culinary entertainments of the inhabitants of our country, both in summer and in winter. The winter version of a juicy, aromatic pork or lamb meat dish is more suitable for cooking on a non-separable or stationary grill. It is installed on a site cleared of snow, near a country house. Summer is another matter - the time of vacations and travel. There is nothing better than having a rest on a car trip or after swimming in a river to organize a barbecue that smells of smoke. For lovers of outdoor recreation, it is best to have your own portable, comfortable barbecue. And below we will consider how to do it correctly with our own hands, we will give drawings and photos.

Do-it-yourself barbecue assembly.

We start making a collapsible barbecue with our own hands. Everything that is done for oneself and with a soul is a source of pride. On the other hand, if you plan to go out of town rarely, then you shouldn't bother. For one or two forays into nature, there is a completely sufficient disposable, shop barbecue. Alternatively, you can buy a high-quality, factory-made, collapsible brazier. Today the stores offer a wide selection of them. However, if you need an original and inexpensive barbecue, then let's get to work.

Features of a collapsible barbecue

A self-made collapsible brazier must fully meet the requirements below. It should be:

  • easy to manufacture, without the use of expensive sheet bending equipment and guillotine;
  • compact, well suited to the size of the car trunk;
  • durable, made of materials that are resistant to high temperatures;
  • easy to assemble / disassemble in field conditions without the use of many tools;
  • reliable in terms of operation and fire safety.

Collapsible brazier with your own hands: photos, drawings, videos, tools

To make a barbecue, you will need a standard set of tools available in the garage or home workshop of each owner. It's not scary if some of the tools are not available, they can always be rented. For work you will need:

  • grinder and cutting wheels for metal;
  • jigsaw with canvases for metal;
  • reinforced scissors for metal;
  • tape measure and other measuring instrument;
  • drilling machine with a large set of drills for metal;
  • metal square and ruler;
  • stylet for marking on a metal sheet;
  • welding machine;
  • a set of dies for threading.

Dimensions of a collapsible barbecue made by hand

It should be said right away that the sizes are always calculated individually. The calculations are based on:

  • dimensions of the trunk of a car, which must completely coincide with the dimensions of the barbecue in a disassembled form;
  • the number of portions of kebab intended for simultaneous cooking.
The grill offered by our portal "Remontik" has the following dimensions:
  • 600 mm in length (designed for six skewers), the distance between them is 100 mm;
  • 300 mm wide (usually the length of the skewer is 400 mm);
  • 150 mm - the height of the barbecue (optimal height - 130 mm + 20 mm - grates), which if it is less, then the meat may burn, and if it is higher, more coal will be needed;
  • 600 mm - the height of the legs of the barbecue (do not forget about the size of your trunk).

Collapsible brazier with your own hands: drawings, photos

We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the simplest barbecue design by looking at the picture:

We will present several options for drawings of a collapsible barbecue with various sizes. Among them, you can choose one of the most suitable options for yourself.

Complete set of a collapsible barbecue

The collapsible barbecue model consists of 6 main elements:

  • frame (stand) made of corners with four fixing tubes with a diameter of 17 mm;
  • the bottom (base) of the barbecue made of steel sheet;
  • legs with a diameter of 20 mm;
  • longitudinal board with 3 projections (2 pieces);
  • side board with 2 projections (2 pieces);
  • grate;
  • fastening elements: engraver's washers and simple wing nuts;
  • bolts with simple washers and nuts (10 pieces).

Such a brazier can be folded very compactly: its dimensions when folded are no more than 600 mm in length, 300 mm in width, and no more than 60 mm in height.

Manufacturing of barbecue structural elements

  1. We make a frame (stand) for the barbecue.

The barbecue stand is made in the form of a frame. It is required to give high stability to the structure and to attach the legs. Moreover, the stand with legs can be used separately, for other needs, for example, for drying clothes and shoes, etc.

The frame is a regular rectangle that has been welded from the corners. For the manufacture of the frame, you will need steel corners. You can also use substandard products that can be found at metal depots. They will cost much less compared to high-quality rolled metal products.

Please note that the size of the frame should always be slightly smaller than the size of the base. This is necessary so that when welding, its width does not go beyond the dimensions of the main barbecue. The sawn and measured corners must be welded into a rectangle with the following dimensions:

  • length - 570 mm;
  • width 230 mm.

Along the edges of the frame on the inside of the corner, you need to weld four pieces of a water pipe having a length of 50 mm, with an outer diameter of 17 mm, and an inner diameter of 10 mm. These four pipes should act as a support for the legs of the barbecue.

  1. We make the legs of the barbecue.

As legs for the barbecue, water pipes with an inner diameter of 20 mm are used. Any water pipes can be used: used or unconditioned. Such legs will fit well into the support tubes that are attached to the barbecue frame. In such a project, the length of the legs is no more than 600 mm. To that end, which will abut against the ground, you need to weld a plug, as well as a platform for stability. To prevent the leg from falling out, make a through hole and secure the leg in the assembled state to the support using a hairpin. In this case, you can make the legs higher.

  1. We make the bottom (base) of the barbecue.

The bottom of the barbecue in finished form is a rectangular sheet with holes for air circulation, holes for attaching to the frame and grooves for fixing bolts.

To strengthen the base of a collapsible barbecue, a steel sheet with a thickness of no more than 3.0 mm is suitable. For durability, which is subject to high temperature stress, use a heat-resistant or stainless steel sheet.

If you do not have the opportunity to use this material, the best solution would be:

  • make grate bars from metal rods, which are welded together in a lattice to fit the size of the base;
  • choose cast-iron grates for the size of the base, which are used in home stoves (but be prepared that in this case the structure will be greatly heavier).

The production of the base is divided into four stages:

  • With a jigsaw, grinder or other tool, you can cut a rectangle with a size of 300x600 mm.
  • For normal air circulation at the same distance from each other, through holes with a diameter of 20 mm must be drilled. They will be required for air access during coal burning. Adjust the number of drilled holes, if there are a lot of them, then the strength of the structure will decrease, if there are few of them, then you will not be able to achieve normal coal combustion. It is important that the openings are not blocked by grates.
  • Make through grooves in the bottom of the structure. The grooves are required to fix the lower edges of the side of the product. For this purpose, measure a distance of 7 mm from the outer edge around the perimeter of the base. Then draw a line around the perimeter. Mark grooves at equal distances from the edges in the center. We drill holes with a diameter of 2 mm, located close to each other. Connect them with a jigsaw, and align the inner edges with round files. We get three grooves, two on the side and one on the longitudinal side. The dimensions of the grooves are 2 mm wide and 20 mm long.
  • Then we make holes for attaching the bottom sheet to the frame. We put the frame on the bottom of the barbecue. We drill three holes from the longitudinal and two holes from the side. We fasten the frame and the bottom with bolts. The nut should be at the bottom, right under the bottom of the barbecue. Thus, you save the threads from sintering during high temperatures.
  1. We make the sides of a collapsible barbecue.

To make the sides, you will need sheet metal (from 1.5 to 2 mm). You will need two side bolts and two longitudinal bolts. The size of the longitudinal ones is 568 mm, the lateral ones are 286 mm, two parts go on each side. Reduce the size in relation to the base by 14 mm. The height of the sides is 170 mm (20 mm of which goes to the fixing lugs).

Now we mark the sides along the lower edge. You need to attach the bead to the corresponding edge of the base. Then the marks are opposite the grooves. So, we get two protrusions from the side and three from the longitudinal side.

Using an electric jigsaw for metal, we cut out the contours of the sides. It is necessary to use files of the HSS brand, which are designed to cut metal. Do not forget to make fixing protrusions from below.

At an equal distance from each other, we make through holes in the sides, intended for air access.

How to fix the sides correctly

The safety and stability of the barbecue structure directly depends on the strength of the connection of the sides. Among all the possible mounting options, it is worth choosing the most reliable one. The essence of the fastening consists in fixing the sides on the longitudinal spokes, as well as tightening them together with the help of wing nuts.

  • Round knitting needles (rods) are best made of heat-resistant metal. In total, you will need four knitting needles with a length of 300 mm. The choice of their diameter is arbitrary. You need to make a thread at both ends of the knitting needle. Now we select the wing nuts for the spoke diameter.
  • The needles must be firmly fixed on the sidewalls. Thus, it will be easier to assemble the barbecue structure. To do this, measure the required distance for fastening the spokes. In the event that the thickness of the metal allows welding, then weld the spokes to the sidewall. If it is impossible to weld, then make paired holes on both sides of the bar. There will be four knitting holes in total. In the paired holes, you need to insert a horseshoe bolt, which is threaded at both ends. The protruding ends of the horseshoe must be tightened securely with nuts.
  1. We make grates.

You can easily make grates if you have a welding machine at your disposal. For manufacturing, you will need reinforcing bars or other material. Using a grinder, cut 284 mm crossbars and 584 mm bars. The number of bars can only be selected individually. Then we weld everything in the form of a lattice. We provide legs - 15 mm in length.

Now we proceed to the final stage of work. It is important to perform it especially carefully in order to fit different parts of the barbecue.

  • We connect the frame of the barbecue with the base. Thread the bolts through the holes in the frame corner and base. Use regular washers and an engraver to secure the bolts properly. The final fixation can be done with a locknut and a nut. In principle, such a connection should be made non-separable.
  • We fix the legs. On the leg supports with an outer diameter of 17 mm, you need to put on legs with an inner diameter of 20 mm. If the play of 3 mm between the leg and the supporting one interferes with the stability of the barbecue, the legs must be deepened into the ground. Alternatively, a threaded fastener can be used to secure the legs.
  • We attach the boards to the base. We insert the protrusions of the lower part of the sides into the grooves of the base of the barbecue. The lower part of the collars must be pre-fixed. Insert metal pins into the holes that are drilled into the niche of the protrusions, which will prevent the sides from falling out. It is possible that this method of fastening will be very cumbersome. Try your own mounting options, such as pivoting the sides and base.
  • We tighten the longitudinal and side boards with the needles. Then we insert the needles on the side boards into the holes on the longitudinal sides. It is good if the ends of the side walls are tightly pressed against the longitudinal board. We put on the washers and tighten the longitudinal side to the side with the lambs. Perhaps fastening with knitting needles inside the barbecue is not rational, because they can deform under high temperatures. So it is better to make them outside the side, as a result of which you will also receive additional handles.
  • Place the grate at the bottom of the barbecue.

So we implemented our plan and made a collapsible brazier with our own hands. If you suddenly find design flaws in the drawings and charts of the barbecue, we recommend that you voice your suggestions in the comments to the article.

It should be added that after the manufacture of all parts of such a barbecue, it is necessary to process them with special means that would protect the metal from corrosion and give the material moisture-resistant properties. The easiest way to treat the surface of parts is to paint with a spray of special paint, which you can find in any car store.

It can be made from a variety of materials. However, making a brazier with your own hands from metal is rightfully considered the best option. What metal options exist and how to make such a structure yourself?

Advantages of metal braziers

Why are metal barbecues so good? A monolithic barbecue oven or its brick version is distinguished by its capital nature - in this case, the structure will not need to be removed for the winter, and it looks more reliable, stronger, more durable. In addition, the stone stove can be improved with additional working areas, which will not only allow you to fry meat, but also bake vegetables, fish, and smoke products. At the same time, the stove will look noble, it will organically fit into the look of any area. Should you go to metal?

In most cases - definitely worth it. Capital structures have their advantages, but portability is far from a disadvantage. The metal brazier takes up little space, which is good for plots of modest size. You can even install such a stove on a cramped terrace or in a small gazebo. In addition, even its stationary version can be transported from place to place, albeit with slight inconveniences - and when creating a folding folding version, you can take your brazier with you to nature, even without having a car.

There are other advantages to creating a metal barbecue with your own hands.

  • The structure will be completely fireproof. The materials used are resistant to high temperatures; if during the work the correct drawings were used indicating the sufficient dimensions of the barbecue made of metal, then even an accidental ignition of the surrounding objects is unlikely.
  • Low financial costs. While bricks, concrete, or natural stone can take a lot of money - at least in finishes - the metal costs are paltry.
  • Ease of operation. All that is needed in order to correctly make a brazier from steel is the initial skills in working with a welding machine. In order to optimize the air flow, you will also need to work with a drill.
  • Manufacturing speed. Due to the large number of technological breaks, you can use a brazier built of brick or concrete in no less than a month. The metal structure will be ready for use immediately upon completion of the assembly.

The downside may be the lack of aesthetics of the steel stove. However, the appearance of any barbecue depends only on the designer and the skill of the manufacturer. One has only to look at some projects to be sure - and such a structure can be turned into a masterpiece.

Design options

Before starting work, you need to choose the type of construction, in accordance with which the drawing of the barbecue will be drawn up. The choice is made based on a number of oven characteristics:

  • optimal dimensions;
  • terms of Use;
  • location;
  • operating mode.

There are many designs of metal braziers. The most common are these models.

Not a separate type of construction, but a very peculiar option is to make a brazier from pre-prepared metal containers - read the following articles:

Various steel fixtures can also be used for decoration - for example, the popular use of forged parts from Zinger sewing machines as a stand.

Making a stationary brazier

It is most convenient to consider the main stages of work using the example of making a simple stationary barbecue. There are two of them: drawing up a drawing and designing a furnace. Additionally, you can take into account the decoration (coloring) of the structure and the creation of additional elements. How to make a brazier out of metal with your own hands?

You need to prepare:

Design

When creating a homemade barbecue from metal with your own hands, you can select any size, depending on the characteristics of the operation of the stove. The main criterion for which dimensions are selected is the amount of meat roasted at a time. The optimal sizes of the barbecue are as follows.

  • Width - 30 cm. This corresponds to the length of a standard skewer, which can hold 8 pieces of meat.
  • The length can be any. It is selected at the rate of 10 cm per skewer.
  • Depth - 20 cm. This space will be enough for the coals to warm up the meat, but it will not burn.
  • The total height is adjusted to the height of the person. It is better not to bend your back during cooking. Usually the height is from 80 to 120 cm.

Having solved the issue with the dimensions, you need to determine how to paint the brazier. The paint will protect the metal from corrosion, while it itself must be resistant to weathering and high temperatures. It should not release toxins when heated. Acrylic heat-resistant paint or silicate varnishes are suitable.

Brazier design

The choice of 3 mm thickness is due to the fact that thinner metal will quickly burn out, and thicker is a waste of money. The work on creating the box is simple - you need to cut out the walls and bottom in accordance with the drawing, saw through holes for air in them and carefully weld the elements together.

Thus, the work is carried out as follows.

  1. Parts are marked on the blanks and cut out with a grinder.
  2. The optimal place for air ducts is the side walls. They are drilled at a distance of 20 mm from the bottom edge in 50 mm increments. The diameter of the holes is 10-15 mm.
  3. Grooves for skewers are cut along the upper edge of the side walls. The first is done at a distance of 5 cm from the end, then every 10 cm.
  4. The sides and bottom are welded together. It is not necessary to make a perfect seam - spot welding is enough; additional slots will only add heat to the coals. That is why it is not necessary to be a professional welder.
  5. Legs are welded to the corners of the barbecue.

This completes the basic structure. Further, you can weld handles to the ends, make a lid, weld fasteners for skewers and pokers, etc. Also, a brazier made of metal is painted: before that, you need to remove the old rust and prime the surface.

Cooker hood

It is worth considering separately. It is a trimmed pipe through which smoke is effectively removed, which under normal conditions does not allow easy cooking of meat. The hood is usually a metal dome that is either welded to the main structure or suspended from above if the oven is located under a roof.

For the manufacture of this device, the same sheets of metal are used, which are welded in the form of a truncated pyramid, at the top of which a short pipe is placed. The base area of the hood should slightly exceed the area of the barbecue.

The steel hood is easy to clean and easy to manufacture. So that it does not deteriorate over time, it should be painted with heat-resistant paint.

Features of manufacturing a collapsible structure

The manufacturing technology of barbecues made of collapsible metal has some nuances. Elements of this design are not welded, but bolted together. The principle of operation is the same.

  1. The walls and bottom are marked and cut out. Along the edges (except for the top), a few cm are added to the folds.
  2. Air ducts are made in the walls.
  3. Cuts are made along the fold lines, then the sheets are bent.
  4. Holes are made on the edges for fasteners.
  5. Holes are also made for attaching the legs. Another option is to use thin tubes. In this case, bolts are welded to the corners of the structure, to which the legs will be screwed.

A collapsible brazier with your own hands can be made collapsible only partially - weld the walls, and make the bottom on fasteners. This will make it easy to clean the ash from the oven.

How to make a marching version of the barbecue?

Do-it-yourself folding brazier is done as follows.

When creating a folding barbecue, it is better to use 2 mm steel to reduce the weight of the structure.
